Rice university phd graduate defies the odds after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

Rosie Nguyen Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Doctors predicted he wouldn't make it past his 20s after being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Not only has Dr. Felix Wu defied the odds, but he's also been thriving after graduating from Rice University . Now, he's working towards making the world a better place for people with disabilities.

It was a day Lisa Hu and Gang Wu will never forget. Felix Wu was only about 3 years old when his family visited different doctors to find out what was impacting his mobility and causing him to fall frequently.

Finally, they got an answer from one of their physicians. It was Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). They grappled in shock when they were given a grim prognosis that their son would likely only live to be between 18 and 25 years old.

"Our world turned upside down. The landscape suddenly became something we didn't know. At the time, treatment was very limited, and there's no cure. So it was very tough for us. Our focus became to slow the progression of the disease," Hu said.

According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association , muscle weakness is the primary symptom of DMD.

It can begin as early as 2 years old, first affecting the muscles close to the core of the body and then later impacting the limbs. Children with the condition may have difficulty jumping, running, and walking.

READ MORE: Teacher refuses to let muscular dystrophy slow him down

Felix Wu shared that it was tough as a child when he couldn't participate in the same physical activities as his classmates or when he had to navigate in and out of buildings that weren't very accessible for people with disabilities. However, he said what affected him the most was how others perceived him.

"I've been questioned about what I'm able to achieve, and it's taken opportunities away from me. There's been assumptions that I'm not intelligent or mature enough to handle certain things. When I did succeed, sometimes people would assume I took some type of shortcut, and that's how I got here," Felix Wu said.

Felix Wu's condition was something his parents couldn't control. So they started focusing on what they could control, taking their son to see the world and supporting him in whatever he wanted to do.

"All we can do is give him our love and educate him as much as we can about DMD. We let him make his own decisions about his health and tell us what he wants or doesn't want to do," Hu said.

One of their favorite activities to do together as a family is visit national parks around the country, and they have been to more than 70 so far.

Felix Wu also loves playing video and board games in his spare time, such as Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering.

But Felix Wu has also always been extremely studious. To Hu and Gang Wu's surprise, he committed to doing well academically and ranking at the top of his class, pointing out that his parents never pressured him to get good grades.

"He's very self-driving, and on top of that, he's very smart. He learns things very fast. We're happy that he has been doing so good. But sometimes, we have to remind him to slow down and take care of his health," Gang Wu said.

As Felix Wu reflected during Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, he said his parents, who are originally from China and came to the U.S. in the 1980s for college, are the inspiration behind his success.

"I think about how lucky I am for the resources I have to this day that they didn't have. That's definitely motivated me to keep moving forward," Felix Wu said.

For the last nine years, Gang Wu has made the hour-long drive between Katy and Rice University to get Felix to class.

But this month, they took their last ride to campus. Felix Wu graduated with a PhD in psychological sciences focusing on industrial-organizational and quantitative psychology, making him a "triple owl" for earning his bachelor's and master's degrees at the prestigious institution.

"No matter what the stakes are for his future, we know Felix is going to fight. It doesn't matter if he's going to win or not, he's going to fight," Gang Wu said.

Felix Wu, who is now 26, is taking a short break before starting his new job at a consulting firm.

He told ABC13 he plans to continue using his research and data to help improve workplace conditions for people with disabilities.

"People with disabilities are employed at a far lower rate than everybody else. That's important because, economically, you need a job to actually be able to survive and thrive. This is an important area where I can bring my own experience and show that there are still a lot of things that people with disabilities can do," Felix Wu said.

College Graduate Surprised at Commencement by Mom Who Had Been Deployed: 'My Heart Dropped'

Malik Heard graduated from the University of West Georgia earlier this month with his mom's support

phd in utkal university

University of West Georgia/ Instagram

One college graduate got quite the surprise at his commencement ceremony.

Malik Heard was walking across the stage at the University of West Georgia in early May when his mother, Sgt. Eva Roby — who had been deployed in Kosovo — made a surprise appearance.

In footage from the ceremony , Heard can be seen shaking hands with members of the college faculty onstage, before a voice over a loudspeaker announced that a "special guest has shown up all the way from Kosovo."

After taking a second to connect the dots, Heard looked around the auditorium, before walking off-stage to meet his mom amid cheers from others also in attendance at the celebratory event.

The pair then spent time hugging and rocking each other back and forth as Heard's mom rubbed his back.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Speaking with WSB-TV , Heard said he realized his mom was able to make it to celebrate his milestone moment when he heard the name of the Southeast European country where she had been stationed.

“Kosovo, Kosovo, that’s what caught my attention. I was listening to what he was saying, but then I heard Kosovo and I knew that’s where she was deployed. I was like, 'Hold on,' ” he told the outlet.

“I looked to the right again, and I saw her come around the corner and that’s when my heart dropped," Heard added.

Roby told WSB-TV that she was unsure if she would be able to make it to her son's college graduation given that it was during what she described as a "pretty popular time" for leave requests.

But, as soon as she learned that she would be able to make it to celebrate her son, Roby said she contacted the University of West Georgia and they "were excited" to help her plan her surprise reunion.

Their Diplomas Came With Envelopes of Cash, and a Catch

The billionaire Rob Hale gave the 1,200 graduates of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth a gift, and asked them to give, too.

A young person on the left wearing a rain poncho over a cap and gown shakes the hand of a man in a dark suit who is holding envelopes.

By Jenna Russell

Until the final minutes of their commencement ceremony last Thursday, the 1,200 graduates of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth thought they knew what they would remember most about it: the supremely bad weather during the outdoor ceremony, where they sat drenched and shivering in a torrential rainstorm.

Then, as they prepared to collect their diplomas, their commencement speaker, Rob Hale, a billionaire philanthropist from Boston, returned to the dripping podium. He brought along two cash-stuffed duffel bags, he announced, and would hand every graduate $1,000 as they crossed the stage — $500 to keep for themselves, and $500 to give to any good cause.

“My friends and I were looking at each other like, no way,” Ali McKelvey, one of the students, said. “We were like, this has to be a joke.”

It wasn’t. Mr. Hale, the co-founder and chief executive of Granite Telecommunications, ranks as one of the country’s wealthiest people and most generous benefactors. He and his wife, Karen, gave away $1 million every week in 2022, to both well-known and unheard-of causes.

Still, as he told the graduates at UMass Dartmouth, he has never forgotten the experience of losing everything, when the first company he built went bankrupt in the dot-com crash more than 20 years ago.

“Honestly, have you guys ever met someone who lost a billion dollars before?” Mr. Hale, a part owner of the Boston Celtics, asked in his speech, which he cut short because of the rain.

Since that disaster, he said in an interview this week, he and his wife have found deep joy and satisfaction in giving their money away. In granting college students a chance to experience the same feeling, he said he hoped to light a spark that they will carry with them — even if he had no guarantee that they will honor his request. (He said he believes the vast majority do.)

“If they get to feel that joy themselves, then maybe it becomes something they want to do again, and make part of their own lives,” Mr. Hale, 57, said. “In America and the world, these are times of turmoil, and the more we help each other, the better off we’ll be.”

In the week since a businessman they had never met handed them two damp envelopes onstage — one labeled “GIFT” and the other “GIVE” — the new graduates have packed up dorm rooms, fine-tuned résumés and snapped last campus selfies. They have also pondered where to send what for most will be the largest charitable gift they have ever had the chance to give.

Tony da Costa, a graphic design major who graduated with high honors, considered giving his $500 to a charitable organization but decided instead to hand it over to an acquaintance of his mother, someone he has never met, who is suffering from an illness and struggling to pay bills.

“I felt like giving it to a specific person would feel better,” said Mr. da Costa, 22, who grew up in the town of Dartmouth, on the southern coast of Massachusetts not far from Cape Cod.

Kamryn Kobel, an English major, gave her $500 to the Y.W.C.A. in Worcester, Mass., where she learned to swim as a child, to support its programs for young women and survivors of violence.

Her donation felt like something to be proud of, she said — once it sank in that the envelopes she tucked under her rain poncho contained exactly what Mr. Hale had promised.

“At first, it was like, is there really going to be cash in there?” she said. “And then it was like, oh my God, it’s for real.”

Smaller and less well known than the university’s flagship campus in Amherst, UMass Dartmouth enrolls about 5,500 undergraduates, more than half of them first-generation college students. Eighty percent come from Massachusetts; 80 percent receive financial aid.

It is the fourth Massachusetts college campus in the last four years where Mr. Hale has thrilled graduates with his signature split gift. Each time, he has selected a public school with high concentrations of first-generation and lower-income students who have “worked their tails off to get there,” he said.

Last spring, he distributed the graduation gifts at the Boston campus of UMass, where 66 percent of incoming students identify as people of color.

Last spring at Deerfield Academy, a private high school in western Massachusetts with a more affluent enrollment, he put the focus solely on philanthropy , depositing funds in a school-directed trust so that each graduate could give away $1,000. Mr. Hale, who grew up in nearby Northampton, graduated from Deerfield in 1984 and went on to Connecticut College.

In an interview on Wednesday, he briefly grew emotional describing how one of the UMass Dartmouth graduates had given her $500 to a local group that provides holiday gifts for children in need — a program that had helped her family when she was a child.

“Seeing things like that is very cool,” he said.

Ms. McKelvey, 21, donated her $500 to a women’s shelter in her hometown of Ashland, Mass., west of Boston, inspired by classes she had taken for her interdisciplinary major, health and society, where she learned about the struggles of disadvantaged women.

“I remember sitting in some of those classes and thinking, ‘Someone needs to do something about that,’” she said. “And now I have the opportunity to do something.”

Advancing Cancer Detection by Counting Tiny Blood-circulating Particles

New Method Has Potential to Detect Cancer at Earliest Stages

By Laurie Fickman — 713-743-8454

  • Health and Medicine

A University of Houston researcher is reporting a new method to detect cancer which could make cancer detection as simple as taking a blood test. With a 98.7% accuracy rate, the method - which combines PANORAMA imaging with fluorescent imaging - has the potential to detect cancer at the earliest stage and improve treatment efficacy.

cancer-cells-made-in-3d-getty-newsroom.jpg

The remarkably precise method allows researchers to peer into nanometer-sized membrane sacs, called extracellular vesicles or EVs, that can carry different types of cargos, like proteins, nucleic acids and metabolites, in the bloodstream.

When Wei-Chuan Shih, Cullen College of Engineering professor of electrical and computer engineering, and his team examined the number and cargo of small EVs inside patients with cancer and those without, their finding was remarkable.

“We observed differences in small EV numbers and cargo in samples taken from healthy people versus people with cancer and are able to differentiate these two populations based on our analysis of the small EVs,” reports Shih, in Nature Communications Medicine . “The findings came from combining two imaging methods – our previously developed method PANORAMA and imaging of fluorescence emitted by small EVs—to visualize and count small EVs, determine their size and analyze their cargo.”

wei-chuan-shih-newsroom.jpg

In 2020, Shih debuted the PANAROMA optical imaging technology, which uses a glass side covered with gold nano discs that allows users to monitor changes in the transmission of light and determine the characteristics of nanoparticles as small as 25 nanometers in diameter. PANORAMA takes its name from Plasmonic Nano-aperture Label-free Imaging (PlAsmonic NanO-apeRture lAbel-free iMAging), signifying the key characteristics of the technology.

For this research, supported by the National Institutes of Health, it was a matter of counting the number of small EVs to detect cancer.

“Using a cutoff of 70 normalized small EV counts, all cancer samples from 205 patients were above this threshold except for one sample, and for healthy samples, from 106 healthy individuals, all but three were above this cutoff, giving a cancer detection sensitivity of 99.5% and specificity of 97.3%,” said Shih.

To further test the performance of the detection threshold of 70 normalized small EV counts in plasma, the team analyzed two independent sets of samples from stage I-IV or recurrent leiomyosarcoma/gastrointestinal stromal tumors and early-and-late-stage cholangiocarcinoma that were anonymously labeled and mixed in with healthy samples and achieved 100% accuracy.

“With further optimization, our approach may be a useful tool for cancer detection screening in particular and provide insights into the biology of cancer and small EVs,” said Shih.

His research team includes doctoral students Nareg Ohannesian and Mohammad Sadman Mallick, and collaborators Steven H. Lin, Simona F. Shaitelman, Chad Tang, Eileen H. Shinn, Wayne L. Hofstetter, Alexei Goltsov, Manal M. Hassan, Kelly K. Hunt, from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Shih and Lin founded Seek Diagnostics Inc. to commercialize this technology.

RNA editing sites likely play more significant role in genetic disease

research news

Peter elkin standing in front of a mainframe computer.

UB faculty member Peter L. Elkin led the team that is studying how RNA binding sites influence human disease.

By ELLEN GOLDBAUM

Published May 30, 2024

New findings by UB researchers reveal that RNA editing may play a larger role in human biology and in the development of human disease than has generally been understood.

Published in Nature Communications Biology on May 4, the study’s authors conclude that the work provides evidence for a more nuanced understanding of how molecular biology works, especially in terms of how proteins and genes respond to environmental challenges.

RNA editing sites cause changes in single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) — the most common type of genetic variation in humans — in transcribed genes that can lead to the coding of different proteins. The expression of these different proteins may in turn be a factor in a broad range of human diseases.

Changing biology

“External phenomena can make changes in your biology to change how you respond to challenges you’re facing, whether that’s infectious disease or climate change,” explains Peter L. Elkin, corresponding author and professor and chair of the Department of Bioinformatics in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB.

With these types of challenges, he continues, interferon gets upregulated, which stimulates the release of APOBEC enzymes, a family of enzymes that edit RNA.

The research focuses on this family of enzymes. Elkin’s team found that 4.5% of SNPs that result in a specific type of change in DNA are probable sites for RNA editing.

If this type of RNA editing occurs at even a fraction of these sites, the authors state, it could have meaningful effects on human health.

Previous work has shown some relation between APOBEC-mediated RNA editing and certain autoimmune and neurological diseases. Elkin adds that about 70% of genetic neurological diseases involve at least one RNA editing site.

“There are specific areas in the genome that we found are susceptible to these kinds of changes,” he says, which suggests that RNA editing sites could therefore have a significant effect on genetic diseases.

The researchers were further intrigued when their collaborators at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center found RNA editing sites were involved in particular cancers.

“It began to occur to me that RNA editing sites could have a bigger role in disease than was previously thought,” Elkin says.

RNAsee uncovers RNA editing sites

To discover all RNA editing sites in the genome, the team developed a computational tool called RNAsee, which they validated with machine learning.

The tool revealed that 22.7% of the potential editing sites found by RNAsee were labeled as likely pathogenic or pathogenic, compared to only 9.2% labeled as likely benign or benign.

The authors write that this finding demonstrates that the type of RNA editing they studied “has a substantial possibility of negatively influencing human health.”

“This work adds another dimension to our understanding of how our proteome develops,” says Elkin, referring to the complete set of proteins that humans express.

The next step in the work, he adds, would be for researchers who are working on the genetics of specific diseases where RNA editing sites have been found to follow up on these findings.

“My hope is that researchers will follow up with basic experiments looking at genes of interest where we have found RNA editing sites,” says Elkin.

In addition to Elkin, UB co-authors are Melissa Van Norden, doctoral candidate; Zackary Falls, assistant professor; Sapan Mandloi,  postdoctoral associate; and Ram Samudrala, professor, all of the Department of Biomedical Informatics in the Jacobs School, and Brahm H. Segal, professor of medicine at UB and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Bora E. Baysal of Roswell Park is also a co-author. Elkin has additional appointments with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of Southern Denmark.

The work was funded in part by grants from the National Library of Medicine, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Standards and Technology and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, all of the National Institutes of Health, as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs. Computational support was provided by the Center for Computational Research at UB.
