Instead, you can opt to work your design in two A1 sheets, which also becomes more manageable for transportation. Create seamless borders for the section on which the poster sheets should meet, or work with a white background.

Paper weight options should be over 200 gsm to avoid unwanted damage during the printing process due to heavy ink usage. If possible, laminate your print or stick it to photographic paper – this shall protect your work from spills.

Finally, always run a test print. Gray tints may not be printed as clearly as you see them on screen (this is due to the RGB to CMYK conversion process). Other differences can be appreciated when working with ink jet plotters vs. laser printers. Give yourself enough room to maneuver last-minute design changes.

Students design informational posters, focusing on a current research project. The unit includes an exploration of the genre, a review of informational writing components, and details on effective poster design. Students first analyze a variety of poster examples and list their characteristics, before reviewing the requirements for their own posters. Students then plan their poster design and, after rough drafts are completed, share them in groups and with the whole class for peer feedback. After revisions are made, students share their presentations with the class for additional feedback, and then make final revisions to their posters. Finally, students present their posters in class or at a school-wide research fair.

From Theory to Practice

Poster sessions are a great way to ask students to share their knowledge about a topic. Because of their focus on presentation materials that go beyond simple text on a page, poster sessions require sophisticated multimodal literacy skills. The NCTE Beliefs about the Teaching of Writing explain, "Writers need to be able to think about the physical design of text, about the appropriateness and thematic content of visual images, about the integration of sound with a reading experience, and about the medium that is most appropriate for a particular message, purpose, and audience." Poster sessions focus on all of these multimodal skills, as they ask students to design presentation materials and accompanying presentations that blend text, images, sound, and space. Further, because of the close and obvious relationship between presenter and audience, poster sessions foreground the importance of audience, purpose, and voice for students. As a result, poster sessions encourage students to synthesize their research and then adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language to fit the needs of a particular audience. Preparation

  • This lesson is designed to explore poster design, following a class research project. For additional resources on teaching research and inquiry, see the Websites listed in the Resources section.
  • This project works especially well for collaborative projects, where classes view each other’s work over the course of two class sessions.
  • Choose a location for your poster session with plenty of open space to allow viewers to flow through the presentations. If the classroom is not large enough, the cafeteria or school library are good choices. Depending upon your school, you may also be able to use space in the hallway outside the classroom.
  • Arrange for tables and any additional materials that are available at your school. For example, you may have easels that can be borrowed from the art classroom.
  • If bulletin boards or wall space is possible for displaying posters, arrange for thumb tacks, staplers, and tape.
  • Print copies of the 60-Second Poster Evaluation , 60-Second Poster Evaluation Chart , 60-Second Poster Evaluation Notes (optional) , and Poster Session Rubric .
  • As relevant for the different projects that students will complete, make copies of the Persuasion Map Planning Sheet and Compare and Contrast Chart Graphic Organizer .
  • If computers are not available in the classroom, make copies of sample posters from one or more of the following sites: ALA Poster Sessions , Images of Physical Posters , and NCSU Example Posters . Students will analyze the posters in small groups. Allow at least three posters per group.
  • Review the Poster Presentations Websites listed in the Resources section, and determine which are appropriate for your class. These guidelines can be used as additional resources or read and reviewed in the class, depending upon the level of support students need.
  • Test the Persuasion Map , Compare & Contrast Map , and ReadWriteThink Notetaker on your computers to familiarize yourself with the tools and ensure that you have the Flash plug-in installed. You can download the plug-in from the technical support page.

Session One

  • Explain that the class will be completing a unit on designing posters that present their findings from a recent inquiry/research project.
  • Ask students to share any experiences that they have with poster presentations (e.g., science fairs, job fairs).
  • Share the definition of a poster session from the Colorado State University Writing Guide, and invite students to compare their experiences with the information in the definition.
  • Display and discuss the information on the purposes for poster presentations and the possible audiences for these presentations .

  • Ask students to jot down general characteristics that they see in the posters. Allow approximately 20 minutes for groups to explore the examples and list their observations.
  • If students need more structure or guidance as they explore the posters, you can pass out the 60-Second Poster Evaluation and have them use the questions to shape their observations.
  • Gather the class and ask them to share the characteristics that they have noted. Record their observations on the board or on chart paper.
  • Be sure that students include observations on both text and graphic design elements in their comments. If necessary, ask questions to encourage wider analysis of both text and graphics.
  • After students have had sufficient time to review the posters and list the characteristics, gather the class and ask each group to share the poster they analyzed and point out the characteristics that they noticed.
  • Working with the information students have shared, group like observations to create a class list of characteristics of effective posters.
  • Compare the characteristics to the requirements on the Poster Session Rubric , asking students to indicate how the posters they examined would be graded with the rubrics.
  • Identify the purpose of the posters, connecting to a recent research project that students have already completed.
  • Provide details on the event (e.g., a class session, a school-wide history fair).
  • Explain who the audiences for the posters will be.
  • Describe the physical space and the resources that will be available during the poster session.
  • Discuss how the Poster Session Rubric will be used to assess the session.
  • Based on this information, ask students to talk about the specific audience and purpose for their posters, reinforcing the information on the purposes for poster presentations and the possible audiences for these presentations , shared earlier in the session.
  • Encourage students to think about the specific purpose for their posters and what the audiences will look for on their posters. For homework, ask students to freewrite on their plans for the posters by thinking about who will look at the posters, what they will be looking for, what information is most important to include, and so forth.

Session Two

  • Arrange students in groups, and ask them to share information from their homework with one another.
  • Ask group members to provide supportive feedback, pointing to pertinent information from the previous session’s discussion of the characteristics of effective presentations and the two rubrics.
  • After students have had time to share their ideas (about 10 to 15 minutes), gather the class, and answer any questions that have come up at this point.
  • Share the Writing Strategies for Poster Sessions from the Colorado State University Writing Guide. Be sure to drill down and discuss the information for each of the four bullet points in the Guide. If students have already written a paper on their inquiry, be sure to emphasize the ideas in the "Working From a Drafted Paper" section.
  • Connect the Writing Strategies information to the Poster Session Rubric .
  • Cover the details in the What to Include section of from the Colorado State University Writing Guide as well. Stress the importance of choosing content that communicates the important information without providing more text than the audience will be able to read during the poster session. Save the details on Graphics for the next session.
  • Briefly overview the three graphic organizers that students can use to begin structuring the information for their poster session: Persuasion Map , Compare & Contrast Map , and ReadWriteThink Notetaker . Explain what the organizer is used for and which topics it will best fit. For instance, the Persuasion Map can be used if the presenter is trying to argue a specific point about a topic. Use example topics from the class to make the overview more concrete.
  • If desired, share the Notetaker Example , based on the Award-winning Southern Flounder Exhibit Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination from the NCSU Example Posters site, to discuss how to use outlining as an organization tool for poster design.
  • During the remainder of the class, students can begin work structuring their ideas and planning their posters, according to the information covered in the Writing Strategies for Poster Sessions Web pages.
  • In mini-lesson fashion, demonstrate each of the three online graphic organizers, gathering only the students who are most likely to use each online interactive for each presentation.
  • For homework, ask students to have completed a graphic organizer for their topics and to sketch a rough outline or design of the information they will include in their poster presentation.

Session Three

  • Arrange students in small groups, and ask them to share their graphic organizers and plans with one another. Have students use the Poster Session Rubric to guide their responses.
  • Gather the class and answer any questions that students have about the project.
  • Review the details on the Poster Session Rubric that apply specifically to the design and graphics used on the posters.
  • Share the Graphics section and the Layout section from the Colorado State University Writing Guide. Be sure to drill down and discuss the information for each of the bullet points.
  • Return to the Poster Session Rubric and characteristics of effective posters from the first session, and ask students to discuss how the information about the Colorado State University Writing Guide aligns with the information.
  • Allow any time remaining in the session for students to work on their presentations.
  • Use The Transport Problem from the Colorado State University Writing Guide to review the resources that will be available during the poster session and to discuss how to carry drafts to school.
  • For homework, ask students to complete a rough version of their poster presentation to share for feedback during the next session. Allow several days for students to work at home. Add in-class work sessions as desired.

Session Four

  • Arrange the class into 4 or 5 small groups. Ask students to set up their drafts for the class to view, keeping each group together in a specified section of the room.
  • Give students 5 to 10 minutes to set up their drafts and make any changes.
  • Pass out copies of the 60-Second Poster Evaluation Chart and ask students to write their name and the name of their presentation on the sheet. Have them place the chart face down on a table or desk near their drafts.
  • Each group will move to the first poster in the next group’s collection, moving clockwise around the room. Students will skip their own collection of posters.
  • The group will review the poster, using the 60-Second Poster Evaluation printout to guide their discussions.
  • If desired, students can use the 60-Second Poster Evaluation Notes to take notes as they examine the posters.
  • After groups have spent 60 seconds evaluating the poster, ask them to turn over the 60-Second Poster Evaluation Chart and add their comments.
  • After adding details to the Chart , groups should turn the sheet face down, so that their comments do not influence the next group that reviews the poster.
  • All members are to contribute to this process. Comments should be original, not copies of the comments of other groups nor “ditto” marks.
  • After each poster is finished, students move to the next poster, rotating through the classroom until every poster has been evaluated by 3 or 4 of the groups.
  • At the end of this process, students should arrive back at their own group of posters.
  • When the 60-second review is complete, have students return to their posters and read the comments the groups have left them.
  • Ask students to take a few minutes to look for similar comments and think about changes that they can make to improve their posters.
  • After students have had time to read the feedback and gather their thoughts, ask groups to reassemble. Have group members share the feedback and their plans for revision with one another. Encourage students to make supportive comments and concrete feedback.
  • Have group members use the Poster Session Rubric to guide suggestions that they make to others in the group.
  • For homework, ask students to create polished versions of their posters to share during the practice presentations.
  • If students will complete supplemental handouts (the ideal situation), complete Session Five and ask students to bring a draft of their handout to the session. Otherwise, move on to Session Six.

Session Five (Optional)

If students should include a presentation handout with their poster presentation, review the information from the Prepare Supplemental Handouts from the Colorado State University Writing Guide. Allow time for students to share their handouts in small groups and provide peer feedback. Because handouts should be only one page and easily read, students should have time to review their work and begin revisions during the session. Provide mini-lessons as necessary on any writing techniques that students need help with.

Session Six

  • Again, arrange the class into 4 or 5 small groups. Ask students to set up their posters for the class to view, keeping each group together in a specified section of the room.
  • Working within their small groups, have students each give a practice presentation for other group members.
  • Ask students observing the presentations to keep notes on notebook paper, using the Poster Session Rubric and 60-Second Poster Evaluation to guide their comments.
  • To ensure that everyone has a chance to practice, you can set a time or announce when students need to switch to another presentation. If a student has not finished a presentation when time is called, indicate that the student needs to shorten the presentation.
  • Once everyone has presented, ask groups share feedback with one another. Emphasize the importance of providing supportive comments and concrete suggestions.
  • With 5 to 10 minutes left in the session, gather the class and answer any questions students have.
  • For homework, ask students to make any final changes to their poster presentations.
  • Remind them of the resources that will be available for the official poster presentations that will take place during the next session.
  • Review information from The Transport Problem from the Colorado State University Writing Guide if students need additional tips.

Session Seven

  • Before students arrive, make any changes necessary to set up the space for the poster presentations.
  • Give students several minutes at the beginning of the session to set up their displays and complete finishing touches.
  • Explain the procedure for visiting the displays: students move from area to area in groups of two or three so no display is ever overcrowded.
  • During the fair sessions, circulate through the presentations yourself, using the Poster Session Rubric to assess student work.
  • After students have had a chance to visit all of the presentations, gather the class together and invite students to share their reactions to the presentations.

What is a Research Poster?

Posters are widely used in the academic community, and most conferences include poster presentations in their program.  Research posters summarize information or research concisely and attractively to help publicize it and generate discussion. 

The poster is usually a mixture of a brief text mixed with tables, graphs, pictures, and other presentation formats. At a conference, the researcher stands by the poster display while other participants can come and view the presentation and interact with the author.

What Makes a Good Poster?

  • Important information should be readable from about 10 feet away
  • Title is short and draws interest
  • Word count of about 300 to 800 words
  • Text is clear and to the point
  • Use of bullets, numbering, and headlines make it easy to read
  • Effective use of graphics, color and fonts
  • Consistent and clean layout
  • Includes acknowledgments, your name and institutional affiliation

Answer these three questions:.

  • What is the most important/interesting/astounding finding from my research project?
  • How can I visually share my research with conference attendees? Should I use charts, graphs, photos, images?

What software can I use to make a poster?

A popular, easy-to-use option. It is part of Microsoft Office package and is available on the library computers in rooms LC337 and LC336. ( Advice for creating a poster with PowerPoint ).

Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign

Feature-rich professional software that is good for posters including lots of high-resolution images, but they are more complex and expensive.  NYU Faculty, Staff, and Students can access and download the Adobe Creative Suite .

Open Source Alternatives 

  • OpenOffice is the free alternative to MS Office (Impress is its PowerPoint alternative).
  • Inkscape and Gimp are alternatives to Adobe products.
  • For charts and diagrams try Gliffy or Lovely Charts .

Planning your poster presentation.

There are a number of elements to consider as part of planning a poster presentation.

Why are you creating a poster presentation?

There are a number of reasons why you might create a poster and being clear about your audience and purpose is the first thing to consider.

It might be a requirement of your degree programme, in which case there should be guidelines on the purpose of the poster and the target audience.

You may aim to present your research findings to an academic conference on student research, or to other subject experts.

Perhaps you are part of a public engagement event and want to express complex material in an accessible way for a non-specialist audience.

Define what you want your poster to do, for example:

  • to help others learn something about your research topic
  • to introduce a new and interesting perspective of a topic
  • to achieve a good mark for an assignment.

The purpose of the poster will inform your planning as you consider the steps below.

Who is your audience?

Think about who you are presenting your work to.

Put yourself in your audience’s shoes. How much does your target audience already know about the subject of your poster? What don’t they know? What would they be interested to find out? Use this to inform what content you include and at what level you present it.

What do you want your audience to remember?

It is a good idea to identify what you want your audience to remember about your poster.

What is the main message for the audience? (This is “the point” of your poster!)

Everything you choose to include should support this main message.

Use what you can to effectively communicate your message:

  • website address or QR code to direct people to further information if applicable
  • separately prepared handout.

Your poster title

With a poster, you only have a few seconds to win your audience’s attention. Make sure your title achieves the following points:

  • make the title interesting
  • deliver a complete, immediately understandable message
  • give a suggestion of the potential benefit of reading the poster.

Try a simple and catchy title, for example, “A microstructural study in the alumina zirconia system” (Bromley, 1992) is improved by becoming “Ceramic hip joints: better for you than titanium?”

Make your text concise and focused

Your audience must be able to get to the point of the poster quickly without reading lots of text. A poster is not a ten-page Word document arranged on a big piece of paper! Think about what text you really need to support the point of your poster. What do you need to explain, and what can be left out? Think about how you use specialist or expert language (jargon).

Grab the attention of your audience by making your topic interesting to read. Keep content clear and focussed.

MoSCoW method

If you have a lot of text and you are struggling to prioritise what to include, try the MoSCoW technique . With the point of your poster in mind, organise the text into these categories:

  • S hould have
  • Co uld have
  • W on’t have.

You could divide a blank page up into these four categories, to help decide the importance of your information.

You can immediately omit text that you categorise as “won’t have”, but also leave out “could have”, and really question what is in “should have”. “Must have” is the only category of information that definitely needs to go on a poster.

Structure your text

Consider your main points and think about the reading order – what does your audience need to know and in what sequence do they need to read it? Select the main points and ask yourself whether each point contributes to addressing the main purpose of the poster.

An example of a structure for text is:

  • What’s the current situation?
  • What’s the issue/problem?
  • What would help improve the situation, and what am I going to do about it?
  • How will the world be different? What will this mean?

Test your text for readability

You can easily test the readability or reading level of your writing in Microsoft Word, which uses the Flesch-Kincaid formulae. These are based on the American school grade system – sentence length, syllables per word, spelling and grammar.

Elements of the Poster

These are the recommended parts of a poster. Depending on your topic, you may need more or fewer sections than are described here. Don't be afraid to deviate from the outline, which is meant to provide the elements of a typical poster. 

Information

  • Your name should be present on the poster. Also consider including the name of the event, your contact info, the year, and other "citation" information. 
  • Your title should be descriptive and take no more than two lines. Choose a capitalization scheme, such as All Caps (every letter is capitalized), Title Case (capitalize every major word, like in book titles), or Sentence Case (capitalize the first word and proper nouns). Try to make your title catchy as well, as it may be the only thing people will read before deciding to whether or not to read your poster. 
  • At some events, you may be required to have an abstract section on your poster. If you are, have an abstract. If you are not required to have an abstract, consider not including an abstract and instead think of the whole poster as an abstract of your work. 

Introduction

  • Include background information in this section, and get the audience interested in why your research is interesting and important. This is a hook to encourage the audience to read further. It may also be a good place for an illustrative photo or image. 
  • Describe your experimental procedure here, and use figures, charts, diagrams, etc., to make the method clear to the audience. Be clear and concise. 
  • Lead with whether or not your experiment was successful and a short description of the data. Then expand on your results and include appropriate figures and graphs. Sometimes, this may be the only section of a poster someone will read, so make the data and results clear. 
  • Again, state the major outcome of the experiment or study. Remind people why the topic is interesting and important, as well as mentioning possible future directions for research, the importance of the topic in relation to major work on the subject, etc. 

Bibliography

  • Cite any item referenced in the poster, as well as other major works in the field. Include a complete bibliography on a handout.

  • Thank mentors and advisers here, and if you have received funding thank the person or office in charge of the funds.
  • NOTE : Students who have received funding from the Office of Undergraduate Research and are presenting at the Undergraduate Research Symposium must acknowledge the Office of Undergraduate Research. Read more here .

Tips and Tricks

  • When possible, break up paragraphs into numbered lists or bullet points.
  • The default tab or indent size is often too large. Use the ruler to reduce tab size, or indent manually using spaces. 
  • Correct bibliographic formatting is very important, so pick a citation style, stick with it, and double-check your citations. See our Citation LibGuide for help, and/or contact your friendly librarian. 
  • Keep the number of font styles down. One type for the title and section headings, with another for the body text, is usually sufficient. Generally, serif fonts (with "feet") make smaller fonts easier to read. 
  • Body text should be in 24-48 point font. The title and other heading should be larger. Make the title visible at a distance, and the body text readable from 4-6 feet away. To check, size your PowerPoint to 100%, center it on a paragraph, and stand five feet away from your poster. You should be able to read the text with no difficulty. The font size for the title should be around 72-120 point font with headers about 36-72 point font
  • Before sending your poster to be printed at full size, print off a mini copy on regular printer paper. The change in format can help you check for mistakes.
  • Be aware of the common colorblind combinations, such as red and green, and avoid them in your poster.
  • If you have a colored background, or one with an image, make sure the text is easily readable and that the overall effect isn't too busy. 
  • When choosing images, make sure they aren't pixelated when the poster is at 100%.
  • Be consistent in your design choices. If one text box has a border, they should all have borders, or if one section heading is bolded they should all be bolded, etc. 
  • Know your audience when choosing which subject-specific jargon to use. People who can read music know that forte  means loud, and a fencer will know that the forte  is the lower third of the blade, but for most people it means an area of strength. 
  • Graphs, charts, etc. should have informative titles and labels.

Visual Unity

Use visuals that will attract viewers, but also illustrate your central point(s). 

​Use color on your poster, but use it smartly. Use only 2 or 3 colors in easy-to-read combinations. Make use of white-balance or leave open space on your poster help delineate sections and make your poster more visually appealing (less cluttered and overwhelming to the viewer).

Be Consistent

Select at most 2-3 fonts (one for title, one for headings, and one for body text). You can also choose one font and use  bold  or  italics  for emphasis and use different sizes to differentiate between headings and body text without using a different font.  

Left justify all text and avoid centering. Make sure to select font that are easy to read, especially at a distance. Avoid script-style or very bold fonts.   

Be Brief 

Keep each text books to 50 words or less. Demonstrate concepts through graphics so that you do not overwhelm viewers with walls of texts. At a poster presentation, you will also be present with the poster to help explain your research, so do not re-write your paper on your poster. 

The bold text in the image helps words stand out in paragraph format.

Use Color To:

  • Connect ideas and sections 
  • Make things stand out to your viewer
  • Direct viewer's eyes through the display  

Color Guidelines:

  • Use color contrast to show the importance of words, concepts, data, etc
  • Don’t use the entire rainbow; stick to 2-3 colors maximum
  • Use readable colors that will not hurt viewers eyes
  • Choose colors thoughtfully with potential visual impairments in mind, like color blindness.
  • Aim for simplicity in color use

Color helps differentiate headings from body text and makes certain words standout.

Make sure to evaluate the visibility of the colors you choose. Which colors in this image are easy or difficult to read?

Size elements apply to both text and images on your poster

  • The more important something is, the larger it should be
  • Use similar sized objects to group in sections or themes/ideas
  • Size helps elements stand out
  • Make sure that all text is large enough to read and all images are large enough to see details

MSDS Student Experience: 2024 INFORMS Analytics Conference

As our graduation day quickly approaches, it seems like a good time to take stock of our experience in the residential M.S. in Data Science program at UVA. A true highlight moment was attending the 2024 INFORMS Analytics Conference in Orlando in mid-April. For both of us, it was our first professional conference in the data science/analytics space, and it was exciting to be among thought leaders and innovators.

We first learned about INFORMS , an international association for professionals in analytics and Operations Research (O.R.), from our MSDS Residential Program Director Dr. Prince Afriyie . We were humbled to receive a nomination from him for the Early Career Professionals’ Network (ECPN) , an exclusive 1-day workshop within the conference. 

ECPN is designed to help those beginning their journey in analytics/O.R. build professional networks and learn the practicalities of working in the field. During the workshop, we rotated through a number of small group coaching sessions, each led by an experienced practitioner who shared insights and perspectives on early careers and best practices. We also had a role-playing exercise, where our groups were tasked with developing a strategy to improve supply chain logistics and day-to-day operations for a hypothetical client.

One of the conference highlights was being selected to present our work at the student poster competition. We shared our findings from our project, an analysis of the average annual income gap between white and minority-owned businesses in the US. We received valuable feedback from attendees and engaged in enriching conversations with other presenters. Discussing the thinking behind our process and the conclusions we drew with an engaged audience was just the motivation and assurance we needed!

The bulk of the conference consisted of speaker sessions in various tracks, led by accomplished professionals with years of experience in research and industry. The myriad topics were so intriguing that we wanted to be everywhere all at once. It was difficult to choose from the seemingly infinite sessions, so we made a pact to mostly attend different ones and exchange our new knowledge with each other afterward. 

Ethan: “I may be biased, but one of my favorite sessions was on Public Affairs and Advocacy in the Analytics Landscape. In the session, we got the opportunity to discuss data analytics work that is often taking place between public sector groups (NGOs, non-profits, etc.) and all levels of government. That talk was fascinating, not just because I had the chance to learn about many tools for data advocacy available to me, but also because of the others I met in the audience. Many of us got to talking about side projects for the public good and other work we can get involved in and we created a group chat to share ideas. It was great meeting enthusiastic colleagues who are also passionate about the type of public sector work I am interested in!”

Tatev: “I attended a particularly impactful session on effective communication in the workplace that reminded me of the power of language. The open dialogue and solidarity I witnessed among the women there were nothing short of inspiring and empowering. We learned techniques for exuding confidence, making switches in our verbal and non-verbal communication, and being advocates for ourselves and others in professional settings. I was pleased to discover opportunities for further discussion and mentorship offered by the Women in OR/MS (WORMS) division of INFORMS, which I happily attended. Beyond that, I also enjoyed a talk on assessing and improving workplace conditions based on employee feedback through NLP. Many of the techniques discussed were ones I used in my capstone project, so I was eager to learn about disparate applications and pick the speakers’ brains about the technicalities of their work.”

We believe the format of the conference lent itself well to forming new connections. Each meal and coffee chat served as a built-in opportunity to meet and network with people from around the world. The denouement of the event was the Edelman Gala, where everyone came dressed to the nines to celebrate the finalists and crown the winner of the renowned Franz Edelman Award . 

We both agree this trip was the cherry on top for our MSDS experience. We became fast friends with peers from top university programs, received valuable feedback and advice from the people at INFORMS, and exchanged ideas and thoughts with others along the way. We look forward to continuing our involvement with the organization, attending similar events in the future, and keeping in touch with all our new contacts. A sincere thank you to the faculty at UVA School of Data Science whose enthusiastic support and encouragement made this trip possible!

How TUNCOM Improved First-Year Student Utilization of Practice Questions With COMBANK, Powered by TrueLearn

After the COMLEX-USA ® shifted to a pass/fail reporting format, osteopathic medical schools nationwide have been striving to ensure students are adequately prepared for the exam as many schools observed that students were spending less time preparing for Level 1—this was reflected in the overall decline in first-time pass rates following the shift. This certainly gave cause for concern, especially as Level 1 performance is known to correlate with Level 2 performance, and with the Level 2 exam remaining a 3-digit score outcome, it was expected to become a more critical outcome for determining residency application and match success.

The Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUNCOM) was no exception to these challenges—and they found an innovative approach to be the ideal solution. 

Increasing student engagement and success with COMBANK

TUNCOM was already leveraging COMBANK, powered by TrueLearn, to augment their students’ learning and support exam prep. 

Having seen the impact that COMBANK usage had on previous cohorts, TUNCOM focused on driving first-year student engagement with the question bank to facilitate early preparation and good study habits well in advance of students taking the COMLEX-USA ® Level 1 exam.

The school took it one step further: they utilized a unique functionality within COMBANK that allowed second-year students to tag questions aligning with the first-year curriculum. This not only made it easy for first-year students to identify questions that were relevant to their courses and incorporate them into their study regimes but also enabled faculty to customize quizzes based on the tags.

In doing so, TUNCOM maximized the value and efficacy of the school’s COMBANK utilization and was able to create opportunities for second-year students to participate in scholarly activities, an important criteria that helps optimize residency application outcomes.

The results were remarkable.

TUNCOM students’ poster presentation at AACOM The 2027 cohort utilized the tagged questions and showed a 54% increase in student participation compared to first-year medical students from the previous year. Collectively, the number of questions taken went up by 20-fold! Within the first half year of the current academic year alone, the cohort had completed over 18,000 questions.

This means that TUNCOM students were regularly integrating practice retrieval and spaced repetition into their studies, both proven learning science strategies that help strengthen concept mastery and long-term knowledge retention. By empowering students to actively shape the utilization of the resource, they not only encouraged them to participate in self-directed learning but also paved the way for them to showcase their academic involvement and participate in research.

Their scholarly work didn’t go unnoticed; it was accepted for presentation at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Educating Leaders ’24 Annual Conference in April 2024.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Women's Health, Sex, & Gender Research is proud to present, along with the Johns Hopkins Women's Wellness and Healthy Aging Program , a joint symposium on "Advancing Sex and Gender Research on Menopause & Healthy Aging," with a keynote presented by JoAnn Pinkerton , a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and division director of midlife health in the University of Virginia Health System.
