What is an accounting and finance personal statement?

Writing a personal statement for accounting and finance is a chance to sell yourself to the admissions tutors and show them why you would make a great candidate for an accounting course.

It’s the place on your UCAS form to describe your skills and strengths that will make you a valuable asset to a university, as well as your plans for a career in accounting.

You are allowed up to 4,000 characters to explain why you are applying for an accounting and finance degree, so you need to make sure your statement is as polished as possible to stand out from the crowd.

How do I write a good accounting and finance personal statement?

All successful accounting personal statements always use evidence to support their claims.

You need to convince admissions tutors that you’re a good match for the programme, so if you claim to be committed or inquisitive, then use examples from your life to back it up.

To write a great accounting personal statement you need to start early, brainstorm some ideas, and then begin your first draft.

This will then need to be carefully revised and edited before asking family and friends for feedback. Incorporate their comments and suggestions, and see how it is improved before asking them to look at it again.

Read through our accounting personal statement examples above to get an idea of what a good accounting and finance statement looks like.

Make sure you proofread your statement for grammar and spelling before sending it off, and if you feel you need a little extra help, take a look at our personal statement editing services .

What should I include in my accounting personal statement?

Many students choose to start their statement by picking a specific aspect of accounting and explaining why they enjoy it, e.g. trading simulation, quantitative techniques.

Admissions tutors want candidates that are as passionate about the subject as they are.

As well as your motivations for studying accounting and finance, think about your hobbies and extracurricular activities too. What skills have you learned from these and how will these help you in your accounting degree?

Talk about any work experience placements you have completed, e.g. shadowing an accountant or assisting a bookeeper. What did you take away from this experience? Do you feel you have all the necessary personal traits and qualities that make a good accounting student?

Your wider reading is also important, so it's worth mentioning anything you've read recently that you found interesting and why. Generally, admissions tutors like students who express their views and opinions, and use examples to back up their claims.

How do I write my accounting personal statement introduction?

We recommend opening your accounting personal statement with the reasons why you are enthusiastic about this subject. You can do this either by picking out one or two aspects of the subject that particularly interest you, or if you have something relevant to share, you can relate an anecdote that explains why you've chosen to study accounting at university. For example, this applicant has chosen to talk about how a trip to Ghana made them want to pursue a career in accounting and finance:

"When thinking of how much power polymer notes hold, it was normal for a child like myself to ask, 'What is money?'. Looking back the answer was obvious. The literal meaning might be 'a medium of exchange' but I simply see it as 'to sustain'. I came to my interpretation of money through a trip to my motherland, Ghana.

For years, Ghana has experienced severe electricity supply challenges due to the economic crisis that led to the scarcity of consumers' payments. The frequent lack of electricity during my time there, impacted my daily activities. Although this was a short stay, having to come up with solutions everyday was frustrating, but it also made me think about the people who go through it every day.

This made me acknowledge the importance of business strategy and investment management. The ability of the Ghanaian government to come up with solutions for their monetary purposes is what inspired me to choose Accounting and Finance."

These opening paragraphs demonstrate that the candidate has thought about their career choice and explained why accounting and finance appeals to them so much. Remember that admissions tutors want to see students on their course that really want to be there, learn more about the subject in-depth and (hopefully) go on to taking up a job in their field.

Another candidate has chosen to open their accounting personal statement differently, by talking about their love of problem-solving and their work experience at a Chartered Accountants:

"I believe that within the financial world the importance of good fiscal decision-making is paramount, as well as the preparation of accounts and other related practices. The development of companies and monetary systems is a particular field of study that I find fascinating as it goes hand in hand with my love of problem-solving. This is a key element of accounting and allows clients to organise their finances in the most effective way. The chance for me to learn the way money is managed in a changing global economy, as well as in business, is why I want to study this degree course.

My desire to study accountancy was reinforced through my work experience at ***** *** Chartered Accountants. Whilst there I evaluated clients’ expenditures and incomes, I found this interesting as the need for attention to detail is key for successful modern accountancy. As well as this I reconciled multiple accounts and was shown how to calculate tax returns for a company or client over a set period of time. I found it really fascinating to be part of the workplace and it showed me how much breadth the field of accountancy has and this has only motivated me to work harder towards my goal of pursuing this career path."

However you decide to open your accounting personal statement, try to convey your passion for the subject, and focus on talking about the reasons why you've decided to study this subject for your degree.

How do I write a conclusion for my accounting personal statement?

One of the best ways to round off your statement is to talk about how you hope your accounting degree will help you grow your skills and knowledge, as well as achieving your plans for the future. For example, this candidate talks about how they've aspired to go to university from a young age, and how the challenges of a degree will help them solve economic problems in the future:

"Attending university has been an aspiration of mine from a young age, the thought of taking on new challenges and learning new things infatuates me with a burning desire to succeed. Long term, I plan to one day be able to construct solutions for the economic problems I read about and as a consequence become an asset to a global firm."

Other students choose to reiterate their interest in the subject, and why they would be a great candidate. For example, they might talk about how their personal qualities and/or experiences have equipped them with the right skills to pursue a degree in accounting.

Whatever you decide to conclude your statement with, try to make it memorable, and encourage the reader to think that you would be an asset to their department.

Now, let’s take a look at the sample essay on the auditing process of accounting.

Accounting Essay Sample

The primary objective of any auditing process is to have the auditor issue an opinion on the preparation of the financial statements of a given organization. Auditing is the process of scrutinizing the books of account with the aim of checking for accuracy of the financial statements provided by the organization to its users. For any auditing process to take place there must be an agreement from the auditor on the engagement by the organization. Particularly, various elements are characterizing every audit process for it to be complete and successful; these elements are as outlined below.

Audit Engagement

The audit engagement is a formal notice by the auditor to the company requiring the services notifying them of his interest in an engagement in the audit process. It involves various steps such as planning the audit process showing how to undertake it, testing the controls engaged before and during the auditing, substantiating the audit report given, fieldwork to gather evidence, and lastly finalizing, and reporting. These are the specific procedures to use when dealing with an auditing process.

Audit Risks

At the end of every auditing process, an auditor is responsible for giving a report on the financial statements of the company under investigation. Audit risk is the risk that the auditor might issue a wrong opinion regarding the accounting records such as giving a qualified audit opinion whereas there was no qualification necessary. The audit risk has three categories, the inherent risks, control risks, and detection risk.

The inherent risk is one that is as a result of an error in the financial records not contributed by the failure of the audit controls. The extent of this risk is dependent on the complexity of the transactions hence the more the complexity of the transactions, the higher the inherent risk. Secondly, the control risk arises as a result of the organization failing to implement the internal controls preventing fraud and errors. Therefore, the lower the internal controls the higher the control risks. Lastly, there is the detection risk arising from the failure of an auditor to detect a misstatement in the accounting records, thus, affecting the final auditing opinion.

Material Misstatements

Material misstatements involve the hiding or manipulation of the material facts with the intention of undertaking fraud or causing an error. When the customer realizes, it may lead to cancellation of the contract between the company and the auditor. In auditing, it affects the decision of the one using the auditing information. However, it is different from material inconsistency that is due to a conflict between the other information provided and the information in the financial statements.

Materiality

The level of materiality of the information is a decision of the auditor regarding the significance of the report depending on the financial statements under auditing and the level of the tests to conduct during auditing. Other factors determining its levels include the regulatory requirements and the public expectations of the users of financial information. An auditor can change the materiality judgment on instances where the amount used was an estimation or in cases where there are changes in amounts affecting the final opinion of the financial statements.

Auditors set a performance materiality level involving an amount that is less than the materiality level for various classifications of transactions. Therefore, this helps in the assessment of the risks of any material misstatements. In addition, a tolerable misstatement is an amount in an account balance that an auditor may tolerate without affecting his judgment of the financial statements.

Audit Planning

Audit planning involves the requirements regarding the preparation of an audit process. The planning has the objectivity of facilitating the effectiveness of the audit process. It consists of the development of an overall audit strategy for the audit engagement, coming up with an auditing plan involving the planned risks, assessment details of the risks, and handling ways of handling these risks. Planning of an audit engagement is a continuous process that begins when the audit process starts until its completion.

The audit engagement is where the auditor and the company agree and gives consent to the audit process. It involves the client acceptance to engage the services of the auditor and the auditor agreement to provide the services to the company.

Risk Responses

Mostly, this involves the designing of appropriate responses to the risks of material misstatements. Every auditor is responsible for addressing the risks of material misstatements by using the proper audit responses. It involves two types of responses that is the overall responses and the response concerning the nature, timing, and extent of the audit procedures the auditor performs. These responses involve the disclosing elements of unpredictability during the selection process of the right audit procedure, the provision for the aspects of supervision during the auditing process, and the identification of the potential misstatements that might result from these unknown risks.

Brainstorming in Auditing

According to the statement on auditing standards (SAS) number 99, it is a requirement for auditors to conduct a brainstorming session during the audit process. The main reason for this interaction is to bring together an auditing team to generate the ideas on how to identify any fraudulent activities in an organization and come up with ways to detect the fraud during auditing.

In order to achieve a productive brainstorming session and yield the expected results, the lead auditor should lead in suggesting the best ways to customize the brainstorming process thereby offering the questions the auditing team should address hence achieving quality results.

How to write an Accounting Essay

Updated 04 Jun 2024

The complete guide to writing a 2:1 standard university essay

The most important aspect of writing an accounting essay or report is that the content must be informative and factually accurate to ensure that opinions are supported by facts and figures in accordance with the latest financial reporting standards and the piece considers all points of view. The layout and presentation is also critical in writing a good accountancy essay. The inclusion of an introduction to launch the essay is important for two reasons, firstly to address the topic and secondly to identify the audience before embarking on any written exercise, the writer must have it clear in his or her own mind who they are writing for, hence, consideration for your audience's level of accountancy knowledge. Also the essay needs to offer an objective conclusion in ensuring that the essay has addressed the accountancy question posed.

Step One: Introduction

Before commencing to answer the specific accounting question set for any given essay, the writer must establish a clear understanding of the question being addressed, he or she must outline for the audience the question being addressed in the essay and also underline the objectives of the essay, what is it that you are trying to reach a conclusion for? This is a vital part of any academic essay writing, as this will outline the end goal of your essay.

Step Two: Structure and Resource Planning

Once the writer has established a clear understanding of the question to be addressed within the essay, the next step is to ensure that a structured approach is undertaken in writing the accounting essay. A clear and concise essay plan will ensure that all relevant subject areas, including appropriate Financial Reporting Standards (FRSs), Accounting concepts, and current developments in International Accounting Standards (IASs) relevant to the essay topic, are referred to and referenced in answering the question posed at the introduction stage.

At this stage, the writer must also decide what resources will be required for academic journals, technical accountancy publications, library databases, primary and secondary research, and the internet (e-books and accountancy research websites). The aim of the research is to compile a list of referencing material from accountancy scholars and researchers in order to back up views and opinions expressed within the essay. The number of references to use will depend on the length and the nature of the essay. In writing an accountancy essay one will often have to use research conducted by others, as it is often not feasible to conduct primary research. Therefore, references to work carried out by others are appropriate within an accounting essay, but the writer must ensure that he or she uses the material to add value to the essay and, hence, supports or challenges a particular accounting concept or FRS.

Brainstorming at this stage can also provide the writer with valuable information and ideas for the write my essay .

Step Three: Inclusion of Calculations/Analysis

This section can be particularly important for writing an accountancy essay, as the subject area will more than likely require the use of example calculations to analyze different accounting treatments being discussed, hence, the treatment of intangible non-purchased goodwill. Including calculations, figures, charts, and graphs should only be considered if the writer feels it’s appropriate for the subject area and its inclusion will add value to the essay. However, it is important to be mindful that not all accounting subject areas will require the use of numbers, as on occasions, the essay may need the writer to discuss and understand fundamental accounting concepts simply.

Step Four: Conclusion and Recommendations

This final section of the essay is important in answering the overall question posed at the start. This section must ensure that it summarizes the discussions undertaken in the main body of the essay and also highlights the results of any analysis or calculations that were undertaken. This section should not only be used to outline the findings or the conclusion but also should be used to express the writer's own opinions and recommendations, both in terms of the question being addressed and suggestions for further research and investigations into the subject area. Accounting essays can often be an evaluation, which means that there is no correct answer or conclusion. Therefore, differing schools of thought will exist, so when having to conclude an evaluation essay, the writer needs to be mindful of this fact and consider all points of view.

Other Considerations

When undertaking an accounting essay, it is vital to ensure that an appropriate level of language is being used; this is key to not only accounting essays but also appropriate for business writing. The use of inappropriate language will result in a lack of appeal to the reader; for example, an accountancy essay that explains the benefits of understanding accounts for non-finance managers will require simple, clear, and concise language. The essay should be written in basic language without the use of complex accountancy terminology. Whereas, when discussing the appropriate valuation methods for financial derivatives, the writer must assume a high level of accountancy knowledge and use appropriate terminology and acronyms.

Once the draft essay has been completed the writer must carry out proofreading, this will serve both as an editing exercise, in terms of content and context, to ensure all work has been appropriately referenced (Harvard referencing is commonly used in business writing) and also ensure correct use of spelling and grammar. Proofreading will also serve as an instrument of checking that the essay has successfully answered the essay's objective as outlined in the introduction. This is also guard against none value added paragraphs included within the essay, this can transpire in essays with lengthy word limits, where the writer is likely to be writing to fulfill the word limit requirement without adding any value to the content. This is important to avoid in accountancy essays to ensure that a clear and concise piece of work is produced.

How to Write a College Essay | A Complete Guide & Examples

The college essay can make or break your application. It’s your chance to provide personal context, communicate your values and qualities, and set yourself apart from other students.

A standout essay has a few key ingredients:

  • A unique, personal topic
  • A compelling, well-structured narrative
  • A clear, creative writing style
  • Evidence of self-reflection and insight

To achieve this, it’s crucial to give yourself enough time for brainstorming, writing, revision, and feedback.

In this comprehensive guide, we walk you through every step in the process of writing a college admissions essay.

Table of contents

Why do you need a standout essay, start organizing early, choose a unique topic, outline your essay, start with a memorable introduction, write like an artist, craft a strong conclusion, revise and receive feedback, frequently asked questions.

While most of your application lists your academic achievements, your college admissions essay is your opportunity to share who you are and why you’d be a good addition to the university.

Your college admissions essay accounts for about 25% of your application’s total weight一and may account for even more with some colleges making the SAT and ACT tests optional. The college admissions essay may be the deciding factor in your application, especially for competitive schools where most applicants have exceptional grades, test scores, and extracurriculars.

What do colleges look for in an essay?

Admissions officers want to understand your background, personality, and values to get a fuller picture of you beyond your test scores and grades. Here’s what colleges look for in an essay :

  • Demonstrated values and qualities
  • Vulnerability and authenticity
  • Self-reflection and insight
  • Creative, clear, and concise writing skills

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

It’s a good idea to start organizing your college application timeline in the summer of your junior year to make your application process easier. This will give you ample time for essay brainstorming, writing, revision, and feedback.

While timelines will vary for each student, aim to spend at least 1–3 weeks brainstorming and writing your first draft and at least 2–4 weeks revising across multiple drafts. Remember to leave enough time for breaks in between each writing and editing stage.

Create an essay tracker sheet

If you’re applying to multiple schools, you will have to juggle writing several essays for each one. We recommend using an essay tracker spreadsheet to help you visualize and organize the following:

  • Deadlines and number of essays needed
  • Prompt overlap, allowing you to write one essay for similar prompts

You can build your own essay tracker using our free Google Sheets template.

College essay tracker template

Ideally, you should start brainstorming college essay topics the summer before your senior year. Keep in mind that it’s easier to write a standout essay with a unique topic.

If you want to write about a common essay topic, such as a sports injury or volunteer work overseas, think carefully about how you can make it unique and personal. You’ll need to demonstrate deep insight and write your story in an original way to differentiate it from similar essays.

What makes a good topic?

  • Meaningful and personal to you
  • Uncommon or has an unusual angle
  • Reveals something different from the rest of your application

Brainstorming questions

You should do a comprehensive brainstorm before choosing your topic. Here are a few questions to get started:

  • What are your top five values? What lived experiences demonstrate these values?
  • What adjectives would your friends and family use to describe you?
  • What challenges or failures have you faced and overcome? What lessons did you learn from them?
  • What makes you different from your classmates?
  • What are some objects that represent your identity, your community, your relationships, your passions, or your goals?
  • Whom do you admire most? Why?
  • What three people have significantly impacted your life? How did they influence you?

How to identify your topic

Here are two strategies for identifying a topic that demonstrates your values:

  • Start with your qualities : First, identify positive qualities about yourself; then, brainstorm stories that demonstrate these qualities.
  • Start with a story : Brainstorm a list of memorable life moments; then, identify a value shown in each story.

After choosing your topic, organize your ideas in an essay outline , which will help keep you focused while writing. Unlike a five-paragraph academic essay, there’s no set structure for a college admissions essay. You can take a more creative approach, using storytelling techniques to shape your essay.

Two common approaches are to structure your essay as a series of vignettes or as a single narrative.

Vignettes structure

The vignette, or montage, structure weaves together several stories united by a common theme. Each story should demonstrate one of your values or qualities and conclude with an insight or future outlook.

This structure gives the admissions officer glimpses into your personality, background, and identity, and shows how your qualities appear in different areas of your life.

Topic: Museum with a “five senses” exhibit of my experiences

  • Introduction: Tour guide introduces my museum and my “Making Sense of My Heritage” exhibit
  • Story: Racial discrimination with my eyes
  • Lesson: Using my writing to document truth
  • Story: Broadway musical interests
  • Lesson: Finding my voice
  • Story: Smells from family dinner table
  • Lesson: Appreciating home and family
  • Story: Washing dishes
  • Lesson: Finding moments of peace in busy schedule
  • Story: Biking with Ava
  • Lesson: Finding pleasure in job well done
  • Conclusion: Tour guide concludes tour, invites guest to come back for “fall College Collection,” featuring my search for identity and learning.

Single story structure

The single story, or narrative, structure uses a chronological narrative to show a student’s character development over time. Some narrative essays detail moments in a relatively brief event, while others narrate a longer journey spanning months or years.

Single story essays are effective if you have overcome a significant challenge or want to demonstrate personal development.

Topic: Sports injury helps me learn to be a better student and person

  • Situation: Football injury
  • Challenge: Friends distant, teachers don’t know how to help, football is gone for me
  • Turning point: Starting to like learning in Ms. Brady’s history class; meeting Christina and her friends
  • My reactions: Reading poetry; finding shared interest in poetry with Christina; spending more time studying and with people different from me
  • Insight: They taught me compassion and opened my eyes to a different lifestyle; even though I still can’t play football, I’m starting a new game

Brainstorm creative insights or story arcs

Regardless of your essay’s structure, try to craft a surprising story arc or original insights, especially if you’re writing about a common topic.

Never exaggerate or fabricate facts about yourself to seem interesting. However, try finding connections in your life that deviate from cliché storylines and lessons.

Common insight Unique insight
Making an all-state team → outstanding achievement Making an all-state team → counting the cost of saying “no” to other interests
Making a friend out of an enemy → finding common ground, forgiveness Making a friend out of an enemy → confront toxic thinking and behavior in yourself
Choir tour → a chance to see a new part of the world Choir tour → a chance to serve in leading younger students
Volunteering → learning to help my community and care about others Volunteering → learning to be critical of insincere resume-building
Turning a friend in for using drugs →  choosing the moral high ground Turning a friend in for using drugs →  realizing the hypocrisy of hiding your secrets

Admissions officers read thousands of essays each year, and they typically spend only a few minutes reading each one. To get your message across, your introduction , or hook, needs to grab the reader’s attention and compel them to read more..

Avoid starting your introduction with a famous quote, cliché, or reference to the essay itself (“While I sat down to write this essay…”).

While you can sometimes use dialogue or a meaningful quotation from a close family member or friend, make sure it encapsulates your essay’s overall theme.

Find an original, creative way of starting your essay using the following two methods.

Option 1: Start with an intriguing hook

Begin your essay with an unexpected statement to pique the reader’s curiosity and compel them to carefully read your essay. A mysterious introduction disarms the reader’s expectations and introduces questions that can only be answered by reading more.

Option 2: Start with vivid imagery

Illustrate a clear, detailed image to immediately transport your reader into your memory. You can start in the middle of an important scene or describe an object that conveys your essay’s theme.

A college application essay allows you to be creative in your style and tone. As you draft your essay, try to use interesting language to enliven your story and stand out .

Show, don’t tell

“Tell” in writing means to simply state a fact: “I am a basketball player.” “ Show ” in writing means to use details, examples, and vivid imagery to help the reader easily visualize your memory: “My heart races as I set up to shoot一two seconds, one second一and score a three-pointer!”

First, reflect on every detail of a specific image or scene to recall the most memorable aspects.

  • What are the most prominent images?
  • Are there any particular sounds, smells, or tastes associated with this memory?
  • What emotion or physical feeling did you have at that time?

Be vulnerable to create an emotional response

You don’t have to share a huge secret or traumatic story, but you should dig deep to express your honest feelings, thoughts, and experiences to evoke an emotional response. Showing vulnerability demonstrates humility and maturity. However, don’t exaggerate to gain sympathy.

Use appropriate style and tone

Make sure your essay has the right style and tone by following these guidelines:

  • Use a conversational yet respectful tone: less formal than academic writing, but more formal than texting your friends.
  • Prioritize using “I” statements to highlight your perspective.
  • Write within your vocabulary range to maintain an authentic voice.
  • Write concisely, and use the active voice to keep a fast pace.
  • Follow grammar rules (unless you have valid stylistic reasons for breaking them).

You should end your college essay with a deep insight or creative ending to leave the reader with a strong final impression. Your college admissions essay should avoid the following:

  • Summarizing what you already wrote
  • Stating your hope of being accepted to the school
  • Mentioning character traits that should have been illustrated in the essay, such as “I’m a hard worker”

Here are two strategies to craft a strong conclusion.

Option 1: Full circle, sandwich structure

The full circle, or sandwich, structure concludes the essay with an image, idea, or story mentioned in the introduction. This strategy gives the reader a strong sense of closure.

In the example below, the essay concludes by returning to the “museum” metaphor that the writer opened with.

Option 2: Revealing your insight

You can use the conclusion to show the insight you gained as a result of the experiences you’ve described. Revealing your main message at the end creates suspense and keeps the takeaway at the forefront of your reader’s mind.

Revise your essay before submitting it to check its content, style, and grammar. Get feedback from no more than two or three people.

It’s normal to go through several rounds of revision, but take breaks between each editing stage.

Respect the word count

Most schools specify a word count for each essay , and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit.

Remain under the specified word count limit to show you can write concisely and follow directions. However, don’t write too little, which may imply that you are unwilling or unable to write a thoughtful and developed essay.

Check your content, style, and grammar

  • First, check big-picture issues of message, flow, and clarity.
  • Then, check for style and tone issues.
  • Finally, focus on eliminating grammar and punctuation errors.

Get feedback

Get feedback from 2–3 people who know you well, have good writing skills, and are familiar with college essays.

  • Teachers and guidance counselors can help you check your content, language, and tone.
  • Friends and family can check for authenticity.
  • An essay coach or editor has specialized knowledge of college admissions essays and can give objective expert feedback.

The checklist below helps you make sure your essay ticks all the boxes.

Colleges want to be able to differentiate students who seem similar on paper. In the college application essay , they’re looking for a way to understand each applicant’s unique personality and experiences.

Your college essay accounts for about 25% of your application’s weight. It may be the deciding factor in whether you’re accepted, especially for competitive schools where most applicants have exceptional grades, test scores, and extracurricular track records.

A standout college essay has several key ingredients:

  • A unique, personally meaningful topic
  • A memorable introduction with vivid imagery or an intriguing hook
  • Specific stories and language that show instead of telling
  • Vulnerability that’s authentic but not aimed at soliciting sympathy
  • Clear writing in an appropriate style and tone
  • A conclusion that offers deep insight or a creative ending

While timelines will differ depending on the student, plan on spending at least 1–3 weeks brainstorming and writing the first draft of your college admissions essay , and at least 2–4 weeks revising across multiple drafts. Don’t forget to save enough time for breaks between each writing and editing stage.

You should already begin thinking about your essay the summer before your senior year so that you have plenty of time to try out different topics and get feedback on what works.

Most college application portals specify a word count range for your essay, and you should stay within 10% of the upper limit to write a developed and thoughtful essay.

You should aim to stay under the specified word count limit to show you can follow directions and write concisely. However, don’t write too little, as it may seem like you are unwilling or unable to write a detailed and insightful narrative about yourself.

If no word count is specified, we advise keeping your essay between 400 and 600 words.

What Does a College Application Entail?

Here’s what the typical college essay involves.

Common Essay Prompts

The Common App, which allows students to apply to multiple colleges simultaneously, offers several essay prompts for applicants. Most prompts invite the writer to describe a time when they underwent a change or persevered through a struggle. Along with these subjects, applicants can also create their own prompts.

Essay Structure and Length

Check essay structure requirements from each prospective institution. Though most schools allow writers to determine their own essay formats, some may set word count limits or recommendations. Keep their provided range in mind as you write your essay, and dedicate most of your writing to the body of your personal statement, keeping your introduction and conclusion concise.

The Common App sets a word limit of 250 to 650 words. Aim for this range if a school does not specify a word count.

Impact of a Good Essay

Colleges and universities make difficult decisions when admitting new students. If multiple applicants submit similar admission materials—such as strong GPAs, high class ranks, impressive SAT or ACT scores, and well-rounded extracurriculars—a well-written essay can help a candidate stand out to admissions officers.

By crafting a captivating essay that sticks with the reader, you can make a lasting impact to secure your admission.

What Makes a Good College Essay?

Along with adhering to formal, academic standards for grammar, spelling, tone and syntax, a well-written college essay delivers on its premise, grabs the reader’s attention and stays within the word count limit.

At the most basic level, writers should ensure their essays are devoid of basic problems like typographical and grammar issues. College essays should respond directly to the given prompt and expand on the premise with an engrossing narrative or argument.

Most importantly, a good college essay offers compelling insights into its author. Infuse your personality, aspirations and struggles into your essay to illustrate why colleges should consider you for admission.

How To Write a College Admission Essay

When it comes to college essays, a strong writing process is key. Here’s what you should do.

Select an Essay Prompt

Though some institutions may only use one essay prompt, others—including the Common App—offer multiple options. Choose a prompt that lets you draw on your life experiences. If none of the provided prompts spark interest, the Common App allows you to submit an essay that responds to a topic of your own design.

Create an Outline

Before actually writing, create a plan for your essay. Summarize your thoughts with an outline. Include important themes and major points you want to include in the final product.

Write a Rough Draft

When drafting your essay, allow yourself to write and get your ideas down without overthinking. You can revise later. Try to avoid becoming attached to specific concepts or approaches in the early stages of writing, as working through multiple drafts with an open mind can help you develop new understandings about your ideas and find better paths toward the final essay.

Edit and Proofread

Edit your essay, both for content and for proofreading. It can help to print your essay on paper and revise with a pen in hand, as the change in perspective as you shift from a computer screen to a hard copy can make you process your writing differently. Consider using online editing apps, which can offer helpful suggestions for concision and clarity.

Have Others Edit and Proofread

Ask friends, family members, guidance counselors or teachers to read your college essay. Even if these readers lack formal editing experience, a fresh set of eyes can help you find ways to improve. Small-scale issues like typos and larger concerns like unclear themes may be more apparent to someone who did not write the essay.

Revise as Many Times as Needed

Sometimes, you have to delete most—or all—of what you wrote. Do not be afraid to go back to the drawing board. Write your essay as many times as necessary to ensure your ideas are conveyed clearly.

When applying to colleges, candidates need to put their best foot forward on all fronts. While some schools focus more on factors like GPA, class rank and extracurriculars, others evaluate applicants holistically, which means the admissions essay can hold more weight.

Tips for Writing Your Best College Essay

Let’s explore some tips and tricks for making the most of your college essay.

Get Started Early

Start preparing your application materials, including your college essay, in the summer before your senior year of high school. Most schools maintain winter application deadlines, so working on an admission essay several months ahead of that deadline ensures you have given your writing sufficient attention.

Pick a Topic That’s Meaningful to You

Apply the adage “write what you know” to your college essay: Think about what makes you unique, then apply this knowledge to the larger theme of your chosen prompt.

Writing about something meaningful allows your passions and personality to shine through. Because admissions departments often receive thousands of applications and essays each year, choosing a topic where your personal truth is evident can help you stand out among a crowded field of applicants.

Add Analysis to Your Storytelling

Extrapolate the themes of your essay by demonstrating how they apply to your personal story. While you can use abstract subject matter in your essay, linking the motif, structure and central theme of your essay to your own goals and challenges can elevate your writing.

Think “show, don’t tell.” Rather than using your limited space to explain overtly how your essay expresses your individual circumstances, illustrate your themes vividly enough that admissions departments can identify what makes you uniquely you.

Read Your Essay Out Loud

Remember: A person reads your college admission essay. Read your writing aloud—what may have felt great in the writing process may sound unnatural when read aloud. Hearing your writing can also reveal redundancies that may have not have been apparent otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About How To Write a College Essay

How do you start a college essay.

Start your essay with a “hook” to grab readers’ attention. Aim for a concise introduction that evokes vivid imagery or raises questions you will answer later in your essay.

What is the format for a college essay?

When formatting your college essay, consider your submission method. If the school provides a text box, refrain from using bolded, underlined or italicized text, which may not translate after copying and pasting. When an institution requires an attached document, submit a PDF file using a standard font like Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman, size 12.

What makes a strong college essay?

A strong college essay captivates the reader with an interesting premise and offers insight into what makes you a unique applicant. Strong college essays reveal candidates’ aspirations and challenges.

How do you start off a college essay?

Remember that the person reading your writing will most likely have evaluated dozens or hundreds of other college essays—maybe even on the same day as yours. It’s important to grab their attention from the beginning, so avoid opening with a vague or generic statement and don’t reveal your essay’s conclusion right away. Instead, get specific, choose bold language and vivid imagery, and make your reader curious about how the story ends.

Is it okay to start a college essay with “I”?

Yes—in contrast to expository or argumentative essays you may have written in high school, it’s totally appropriate to write a college application essay from a first-person point of view. In fact, one of the most important functions of a college essay is to give admissions officers an idea of who you are as a person, so don’t hesitate to write from your own point of view.
