At Niche, one of our goals is to connect you with the best colleges for your chosen field of study. Often, select colleges offer better academic opportunities for specific majors than others, and our platform can assist you in finding the best school for your educational goal. If your goal is to be an anthropology major, we can help you connect with the best colleges for anthropology in the country.
What is Anthropology?
As an anthropology major, you’ll be studying human life and the components that shape human history and diversity. These components are primarily linguistics, culture, and biology.
While anthropology is a major all on its own, there are a few subsets of the major that may interest you as an anthropology major:
- Archaeology : This is the study of human history through the excavation and analysis of physical remains and artifacts, most often at sites of past civilizations. This subset of anthropology is physically demanding.
- Cultural anthropology : This is the study of living societies and cultures. As a cultural anthropologist, you’ll observe the lives of select communities and participate in their daily living. Being a cultural anthropologist is about studying, for example, how technology makes a difference for the community and using your own immersive experience to gain first-hand knowledge. You’ll also gather more information by conducting interviews and research.
- Biological anthropology : This is the study of humans as living organisms. For example, a biological anthropologist might choose to study how diseases affect specific communities or how a culture views and handles pregnancy and childbirth.
- Linguistic anthropology : This is the study of language in culture. As a linguistic anthropologist, you’ll look into the history of a language, research how it’s changed, and see how language may play a role in specific cultural and historical interactions.
What is it Like Being an Anthropology Major?
Students of anthropology should have or be open to developing a curiosity about people, an interest in problem-solving, and an interest in languages. Anthropology majors also need to be comfortable working alone or with groups. Depending on your area of interest in the field, you might need to practice and develop your public speaking skills.
What Are Some Career Options for Anthropology Majors?
There’s no shortage of career options for anthropology majors. Since the field of study is quite broad and full of specific subsets, anthropology majors can have their choice of the many fulfilling careers that may require an anthropology degree.
