Book Review

Shyam

Q. Review of the book  ‘Shyamchi Aai’  by Sane Guruji.

Introduction

Shyamchi Aai, (meaning  Shyam’s Mother)  is an autobiography of Sane Guruji. Sane Guruji, fondly called Shyam during his childhood, is narrating his memories to a group of children in a nightly sitting.  Shyamchi Aai  has been a Marathi classic by the freedom fighter and social reformer, Sane Guruji.  Most Marathi-speaking children must have read this  book at home or in school.  The book describes about the Mother’s positive figure so the title of the book is Shyamchi Aai,

The book is about the author’s childhood in Palgad village in Konkan, which later became famous as Sane Guruji’s birthplace. The book presents a core relationship between Shyam and his mother, a woman both deeply traditional and independent. For Shyam, she is no less than god. Whatever he is, he attributes to her. She teaches him to do what is right, be it helping her in her endless household works or performing her rituals for her. The bond between Shyam and his mother is sometimes unbelievable. One of the episode of this book is very close to heart, shyam  fears water  so he avoids swimming in water and  shyam  is teased by his friends  as coward boy . How can a mother tolerate it? shyam’ mother  dragged him to the well where he finally learns swimming.

The language of the book is very simple and  sentimental. Conversational tone has been used in the book which captures the reader to read it in a single sitting.  The book is filled with tear-filling conversations between mother and son,   like: “Are you disappointed in me?’’ or “When I see the love in your eyes, I feel strengthened?” .  Due to the language Sane Guruji managed to keep the book in the mind of today’s young readers also.

‘Shyamchi Aai’ spreads a strong message of humanity, the value of a father’s praise and the fear of his anger, the value of mother and her love as well as benefits of the honesty about childish wrongdoings.  ‘Shyamchi Aai’  shows that if love is present in a person’s life, the person can be content; no matter how poor he is. Everyone  must read this book. My rating will be 10/1

Pandurang Sadashiv Sane (1899-1950), also known as Sane Guruji, was an Indian freedom fighter, teacher, and social worker. His childhood name was Shyam, and his mother, Yashoda was the primary influence in his life. Sane wrote his Marathi autobiographical book, Shyamchi Aai (Shyam’s mother) while incarcerated in Nasik prison for his involvement in the Indian freedom struggle.

poster

It is arranged as a series of anecdotes narrated by the older Shyam over thirty one nights to his classmates at the Ashram they study in. Describing the values his mother inculcated in him, the episodes are narrated chronologically, from a background about his mother’s humble beginnings, moving on to life in her privileged married home, to the rift in the joint family they belong to, the dire circumstances that test the family’s resolve to stay righteous, and ending with Yashoda’s death.

Sane admits that as a child, he was impetuous, prompting his mother to advise him, and if that failed, reprimand or punish him. In his childhood, he changed schools owing to his parents’ inability to afford the fees. The book interestingly centres on the home as a place of learning morals and values, as against the school, which provides education for a fee. The incidents when the education system let him down, but not his mother’s values, may have laid the foundation to Sane becoming a teacher.

Written as an emotional tribute to his mother, Sane's Shyamchi Aai is widely regarded as a classic, and a primer on moral values in an Indian context.

P.K. Atre’s Shyamchi Aai (1953)

While the book became popular, Pralhad Keshav Atre’s movie has its ardent admirers and won accolades like the President’s Gold Medal for All-India Best Feature Film at the 1st National Film Awards in 1954.

The movie begins a little differently, with a grown-up Shyam/Sane (Damuanna Joshi) narrating anecdotes about his mother, Yashoda (Vanamala) to other inmates of a prison cell, presumably Nasik, where Sane wrote the book. The episodes and incidents from the book become one lengthy flashback in the 1953 movie, and rather than dedicate precious screen time to some details, they have been depicted visually.

Little Shyam (Madhav Vaze) is a vivacious, naughty boy who dislikes sharing with others or doing household errands, and unwittingly makes errors of judgement. But his mother lovingly, and sometimes through punishment, instils a code of personal rules that she hopes will hold him in good stead through the travails that life will surely throw his way. Shyam’s is a god-fearing family that observes everyday religious rituals, but through his experiences and his mother’s wisdom, Shyam gains an insightful understanding of the moral values she is inculcating in him.

For instance, in the book, there is an episode where Shyam refuses to press the legs of his ailing brother. Yashoda urges Durva Aji, an elderly woman who lives with them, to sing the  chindhi . A song featuring God Krishna, his sister Subhadra, Narada and Draupadi, the  chindhi is  about how being related by blood is at one level, but the kinship and bond in the relationship come from devotion to each other. Shyam realises that this was his mother’s way of urging him to build such a bond with his brother. In the book, the song is only referenced with a story narration, but in the movie, it becomes a lilting lullaby called  Bharjari ga Pitambara,  written by Atre and composed by Vasant Desai.

Madhav Vaze as little Shyam must surely have been the highlight of the movie, and regarded as a delightful amalgam of a beloved character and the right child actor to play it. Shyam is a child who feels both resentment and remorse in ample measure, and Vaze expresses these endearingly.

THE 2023 ADAPTATION

The book has universally relatable anecdotes and has stood the test of time, going by P.K. Atre’s movie adapted from the book in 1953, to numerous stage adaptations and many translations, including one to English by Shanta Gokhale as recently as in 2021. This month, we will see a new movie adaptation of Shyamchi Aai by Sujay Dahake hitting the screens.

Going by the trailer and song promotions, Dahake’s upcoming movie taps into the nostalgia surrounding the book and the 1953 movie. His adaptation, developed by Sunil Sukthankar, builds on the story of Shyamchi Aai as a foundation to portray the character development of Shyam, the boy, who became Sane Guruji, the freedom fighter, teacher, and social activist.

image_item

Readers of the book relate deeply to the episode where Shyam learns to swim. When other boys his age have learned to swim in the village well, Shyam is reluctant and has hidden himself. His mother forces him out and makes him confront his fear of water and the awkwardness of being a beginner in learning a skill. In the 1953 movie, this happens in passing, but one hopes that in the 2023 movie, this incident will get its due screentime.

One wonders how the new script will handle the depiction of corporal punishment. The original book and the 1953 movie have situations where Yashoda hits and canes the errant Shyam to teach him values, as does his teacher at school. This kind of punishment may have been the norm in 1933 when the novel was written, and perhaps also in 1953 when Atre made the movie. In the 2023 edition by Dahake, placing this in the context of Shyam’s character development to Sane, Yashoda's punishments seem to be portrayed for the contemporary audience as early training in resilience that holds Sane in good stead when he undergoes rigorous imprisonment as part of the Indian freedom struggle.

poster

The 1953 movie dwells briefly on a memorable section of the book where Shyam travels with his mother on a pilgrimage to Ladghar. The description of this trip is evocative - journeying through forests, making offerings to the sea, and making acquaintance with people who love his mother. Sane regarded it as an enduring memory, not just for the time spent in Mother Nature, but also as precious time spent with his mother for perhaps the last time before she passed away. One hopes Dahake’s 2023 adaptation will delve into the emotions that this episode in the book evokes.

Abstract Nihali is a unique language which is struggling for existence and is facing many challenges. Around 2000 villagers of Buldana district, Maharashtra, today use this language. From the previous generation, there are only four to five aged persons who can remember the old words, idioms, and phrases of the language exactly. They are the only surviving resource available to us today. The language, which once was very rich and known for its uniqueness, Ow is striving for its existence. The coming generations are getting away from their roots and are under various influences which are marring the survival of the language. Globalization, liberalization, and privatization led this language rapidly towards endangered status. UNESCO code for its endangered status is ISO-639-3. The paper intends to focus on the life and culture of the Nihals in short. It highlights various reasons and challenges before the language and tries to put forward some solutions to them. Keywords- Nihali, PLSI, Endangered, Globalization.

Bharati Mukherjee holds an esteemed position among the diasporic writers of Indian origin with her remarkable contributions like Jasmine, The Tiger's Daughter, Wife, Desirable Daughter etc. Her literary works are firmly based on the immigrants' experience in a completely alien land, the intense pain of dislocation and displacement from one's homeland towards adopting and adapting the foreign country and its different culture. Although Bharati Mukherjee was born and brought up in India, she spent most of her literary career in USA and Canada. Naturally she can well connect her own experience with the feelings and sensibilities of the immigrants who suddenly feel themselves uprooted from their homeland but find it too difficult to adjust and assimilate in the new ambience, new culture and standards of society. Bharati Mukherjee's works attract the readers' attention for the authentic overtone, realistic description, penetrating observatory power while her portrayal of characters evokes originality in their Indianness and their feelings so genuinely expressed as to mesmerize the readers in the narrative. This paper intends to highlight Bharati Mukherjee's portrayal of the immigrants, their intense feelings of loneliness in the present situation, nostalgia towards past and the problems of identity in connecting the two disparate cultures.

'Shyamchi Aie' book review: Speaking to the heart

Image used for representational purpose only

Some books talk to the heart. The Alchemist is one example. It packages simple wisdom and highlights values precious to those who wish to live a life that is spiritual without being ritualistic or based on any single religion. Which is why despite the increasingly materialistic mindset humans tend to adopt, the book has consistently remained a best seller through decades.

Shyamchi Aie is to the reader of Marathi literature, what The Alchemist is to an entire universe of readers thanks to its various translated versions. The simply told stories that reach out to both children and adults, hold within them grains of truth that are perennial and can lead to where peace of mind and compassion walk hand in hand to pave the way for a better life. Sane Guruji’s home-spun wisdom has endured through two centuries and this translation may enlarge his reach to include young readers not only in India, but across the world.

book review of shyamchi aai in english in short

Shanta Gokhale’s translation carries within it what I believe is the spirit of the original. The prose runs softly like a smooth flowing river that, even as it meanders its way through tricky terrain, manages to avoid any hurdles.

The short episodes, that are stories told every evening by Shyam to his young peers, centre around the simple wisdom contained in the life lessons his mother has taught him, through advice and example.

The stories range from the humorous to ones that are touched with sadness, but each narration has the power to hold the reader’s attention, and the simple style makes it acceptable to many levels of readers.

The rural backdrop of the book adds its own charm, and descriptions such as the one of a ‘night of crisp bright moonlight,’ when ‘the river in the distance looked like flowing silver’, transport the reader into a world far away from the chaos of urban living.

Shyam’s story-telling includes frequent personifications of Nature, as when he talks of the same river, as knowing no rest. ‘She only knows to keep flowing.

This is her prayer and it never stops. As she flows, she hums or gurgles with laughter, or turns playful or solemn, or even angry. The river,’ he adds, ‘is a profound mystery.’ The result is a lyrical and visually rich text that feeds the reader’s senses and fuels the imagination.

Stories are wound around simple everyday aspects of a way of life many of us have forgotten. The making of leaf cups, which were an environmentally friendly approach to the process of serving food and eating, becomes the base for a story on why one must undertake every task with dedication and concentration.

So, when Shyam resists having to join his family in making the plates and bowls they eat from, and does a shoddy job, a tack slips out while he is eating from a plate he has made and sticks in his throat. His mother tells him that he should make plates that anyone would enjoy eating from and till he learns to do that, he must eat out of the plates he makes.

It’s a simple lesson and safe advice, and soon results in Shyam making plates that draw admiring comments from his father. When his sister gives him an apricot, Shyam muses that it tasted very sweet, because ‘sweetness doesn’t belong entirely to the thing itself. It also comes from the work you have done to earn it. True happiness comes from doing the work well.’

As inspiring as the stories, is the foreword by Jerry Pinto, who speaks directly to the young reader who may have picked up the book to browse through it.

With the first few lines which begin with ‘Hi, I like you very much already. You are reading. That’s a good sign’, Jerry ensures his reader is motivated to read the book, at least one story at a time.

Keeping the reluctance of young readers towards a two-dimensional book, and with a view to weaning them away from multimedia the publishers have added tiny teasers on the back cover and a series of notes at the end of the book.

All told, a definite must-have book, to delve into when you want a quiet moment. A book to bond over as you read it around to younger folk, or leaf through at times when tough decisions need to be made. At such times, more likely than not, Shyamchi Aie will have a solution to offer. And it will come packed into a delectable story.

श्यामची आई पुस्तक सारांश लेखन Shyamchi aai book review in Marathi

'A novel of ideas' —Jerry Pinto A child grows with mother's love Also with its reverse. The sun nurtures trees and flowers The moon is equal nurse. Thus do things grow and thrive In this our universe. The evening prayers in the ashram are over. Cowbells tinkle sweetly in the distance. The residents of the ashram sit in a circle, their eyes fixed on Shyam, who has promised them a story as sweet as lemon syrup. And so Shyam begins. While on some evenings he tells them of his boyhood days, surrounded by the abundant beauty of the Konkan, on others he recalls growing up poor, embarrassed by the state of his family's affairs. But at the heart of each story is his Aai—her words and lessons. He reminisces of the day his mother showed him the importance of honesty and the time she went hungry just so her children could eat a full meal. Narrated over the course of forty-two nights, Shyamchi Aai is a poignant story of Shyam and Aai, a mother with an unbreakable spirit. This evergreen classic, now translated by the incomparable Shanta Gokhale, is an account of a life of poverty, hard work, sacrifice, and love.
