Project 1 – Case Study and Documentation of Building Services Systems

In a group of seven, we were required to study and analyse the services systems of a building with at least 4-storey height. Afterwards we were to produced an A4-bound report and two A2-sized summary boards detailing these systems.

Objectives of the project: 1. To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems through real life project (experiential learning). 2. To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building. 3. To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems. 4. To develop students’ understanding and familiarity on the drawing conventions and standards for different building services systems.

The systems we needed to look at were as follow:

1. water supply system 2. electrical supply system 3. sewerage, sanitary & drainage system 4. mechanical transportation system 5. mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning system 6. fire protection system

Each of us had chosen one of the topics to study and analyse, with fire protection system broken down into active and passive systems. The building we chosen for our case study was Subang Parade, and the part that I did was mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning system.

Below attached the preview of our report:

The pdf file for the report can be downloaded here: Project 1 report

P1 summary board

Learning outcomes: 1. Identify and understand relevant information related to water and electrical supply, sewerage, mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning as well as fire protection systems. 2. Understand how each building services functions including the connections and position of different parts equipment. 3. Understand and explain the principles and systems as well as space implications and regulations related to different building services.

Building services systems, although usually unseen by most people (e.g. how many people in a shopping mall actually looked at them?), without them a building cannot function properly. Therefore I am happy that I was able to study about them.

Construction is one among the foremost dangerous sector. Countless industry accidents occur within the world causing damages and injuries to workers and consequently economical losses each year. Safety issues has gained importance throughout industry. Many construction companies around world are implementing safety to scale back injuries, eliminate illness, and to produce a secure work environment in their construction sites. The aim of this research is to spot and evaluate the security management in construction projects to regulate and minimize Health and Safety (H&S) of construction workers. Questionnare use to gather a good range of opinions from experienced professionals working in numerous construction sites to match. The reviews of this literature are the primary step in obtaining information from previous related studies. The literature review provides the theoretical background about safety management that has guided design of questionnare. This research concludes that industry has high number of fatalities and long-term injuries. It is unacceptable in modern society and also makes the industry inefficient, with days lost because of injuries. Research shows that the foremost of accidents are thanks to several common factors, like poor construction planning, lack of design safety, inadequate safety training, workers behaviour, inherent safety H&S risk of construction and lack of data of site rules and regulations.

After studying the reality of application to occupational safety in new Iraqi building projects and sampling the situation wilt that in developed and neighboring countries, researcher found that there is a big gap in the level of safety application conditions, this indicates the need fora quick and clear reference for local engineers to use it on site for safety conditions in their projects. As a case study the monitors work the researcher studied a huge project in the United Arab Emirates. This project considered for safety requirements to highest grades. This case study may be far away from the projects in Iraq, but we hope to rise the Iraqi work level in the near future. After seeing the way of administration work and how they were rated the severity of each phase of the work, an idea was builtabout the most dangerous situations in projects with multiple floorsbuildings. To find multiple solutions to the risk, researchers identified 46 cases with their ratings, type of perceived risk in each case, and displayed a format survey to the most important specialized institutions and companies operating in Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. Finally theresearcher takes the results, and format a software that any user can use in his personal computer to studythe expected risk, how to avoid it and how to deal with it if it happens.

Reducing construction accidents by increasing safety for various construction firms have always been major issues that have had an impact on various construction projects. Many research indicates a close focus on the difficulties of reducing construction accidents and increasing safety in construction projects by locating the optimal safety investments in precautionary safety equipment and activities used within any construction project. The construction industry has been using some mathematical models to obtain the optimal safety investment. For instance, Behavior-Based Safety is one of the many techniques used in the industry to increase safety due to its role of observing and reporting the workers' behaviors to eliminate accidents and increase project safety. The main objective of this study is to support reducing construction accidents by increasing safety awareness as well as comparing the cost of construction accidents with the cost of safety investments in a construction field. This research paper will discuss the effectiveness of the safety measurements on a construction project as well as compare the direct and indirect accident costs to the safety investments to increase safety in any construction field. This research aims to show that good safety management of a construction site can prevent accidents, reducing the cost of accidents and increasing project profits.

This paper aims to deal with construction industry risks. It deals with all type of construction industry types such as small house, malls, and huge buildings. Many accidents can be happened in the sites, so it is important that appropriate measure are taken into consideration to help in curbing the menace to improve safety in the working environment both within and the surrounding. The researchers concluded that the risks which can be avoided should be avoided to reduce the number of accidents that happen in the working environment. Rules and regulations that are clear and well understood by the workers are important in eliminating or reducing hazards experienced within the working environment. With adequate training and strict policies put in place, it is possible to deal with the risks at the workplace. The management should take responsibility and consider it as a necessity to introduce adequate measures and policies that can govern all activities undertaken in construction sites.

In order to achieve the purpose of this research, a special questionnaire were designed to fulfill the task of this research, exemplified the subject of safety where what is supposed to be present in the workplace and means of prevention that contribute to raising the safety and industrial security degree rate to the highest level, based on the regulations and safety standards followed in Saudi Arabia, compared to what is the case they have both in field sites or within constructions, the questionnaire has been distributed in some construction projects distributed in different places located in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and has been narrowed in the building and construction sector category, then study what came in its provisions, for the purpose of the process of analyzing, and to study the causes of accidents, in order to achieve the aim of this research.

Construction industry plays an important role in the economic development of any country. As construction industry is less automated and more labor intensive, construction workers are the foundation of this industry. Construction safety on project sites is of utmost importance due to the nature of the construction industry. However, it is usually a secondary concern in a market-driven society where the main concern is completing projects at the required quality with minimum time and cost. Thus, safety issues are considered only after an accident occurs at a construction site with follow up measures to improve working conditions, especially in developing municipalities like Dingalan, Aurora. Public works in Dingalan, Aurora include the safety and health as payable item and it must be implemented properly.  Therefore, proper safety management in construction is of utmost importance; hence, this study aims to introduce a benchmark to measure construction safety through a proposed ...
