IELTS Model Essay: Advertising

IELTS Essay Advertising

Here is another IELTS model essay, this time from an IELTS essay question from Cambridge IELTS Book 15:

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

(Cambridge IELTS Academic Book 15 Test 3)

My Model Essay

We have become increasingly surrounded by advertisements, with those seen on traditional TV channels and billboards now supplemented by paid advertising on social media, websites and within apps. But how effective is advertising at getting us to make purchases?

There are certainly strong arguments for the effectiveness of advertising. Firstly, adverts related to special offers can be quite successful, especially if they are time-limited. For example, Black Friday offers for tech products often lead to people making expensive purchases they probably otherwise would not make, in part because they need to complete the purchase before a deadline. Secondly, targeted advertising on social media often gets good results as it is based on people’s browsing habits and interests. Many companies spend a lot of money on Facebook sponsored posts because of this.

However, without targeting or special offers, a lot of advertising may be much less effective since people will see it as irrelevant or unimportant, meaning they will simply ignore it. Certainly on social media feeds, there are now so many adverts that many users just scroll past them unless they are very carefully crafted so as to immediately grab their attention. The situation is even worse on traditional TV channels, where frequent commercial breaks tend to be used as an excuse to check your phone or make a cup of tea.

Overall, I feel that when people are given a strong incentive to buy, and when it is carefully crafted and targeted, advertising can be effective. But otherwise its effect on our buying decisions is limited because its sheer volume turns it into mere background noise.

IELTS Topics: Advertising [With Speaking and Writing Sample Answers]

Posted by David S. Wills | Sep 7, 2020 | IELTS Tips | 0

IELTS Topics: Advertising [With Speaking and Writing Sample Answers]

Advertising is a fact of life for almost all humans in the twenty-first century. As such, it is also a possible IELTS topic . In this exam, you might find questions about advertising in any part – speaking, writing, listening, or reading.

Today, I am going to explain a little about advertising and IELTS . I will talk about how it could arise in the exam and what you should do to give a great answer. I will also cover some aspects of IELTS vocabulary.

Advertising Vocabulary for IELTS Students

First of all, let’s look at some useful words and phrases that might help you in your next IELTS exam. These are all related to the topic of advertising.

Here is a PPT of vocabulary related to the IELTS topic of advertising. I made this a few years ago when I was teaching IELTS in China.

Advertisement vs Advert vs Ad

Because advertisements are so common in daily life, we tend to shorten the word to make it easier to say and spell. Instead of “advertisement,” we usually say “advert” or “ad.” The meaning is the same in each case, but they are shorter and easier to use.

However, remember that for IELTS writing you should use a more formal kind of English and this means using the longer form of words. Thus, you would be better avoiding “ad” and saying “advertisement” instead.

An Important Note on Pronunciation

The word “advertisement” is pronounced differently in British and American English. In British English, we place emphasis on the second syllable, but in America they say it with an emphasis on the first. You can read more about it at the Cambridge Dictionary website .

One final note on vocabulary: The word “ad” is short for “advertisement” but “add” means to put things together, such as numbers. Also, “ad” is a noun” while “add” is a verb. These words are pronounced the same but spelled differently. Do not confuse these in your IELTS writing test!

  • Just add the milk to the flour and then mix them together. You can add the egg later.
  • I say a funny ad on TV earlier today. A gorilla was playing the drums!

IELTS Speaking

In the IELTS speaking test, you might be asked about advertisements. This could occur in any of the three parts. For part one, it would be a pretty straightforward question about your experiences or opinions. For example:

Q: Have you ever bought something because you saw it advertised on TV or the internet? A: Yeah, sure. I think most people have. Off the top of my head, I can think of a miniature tripod that I saw online last year. I looked up some reviews and then bought it, but I wouldn’t have known about it if it weren’t for the ad.

In part two, you would be asked to describe an advertisement . There are various possible cue cards but this is one that you might encounter:

Describe an advertisement you like. You should say: – what type of advertisement it is – what product it advertises – when you first saw it and explain why you like it and think that this advertisement is effective.

You can watch this advert and then look at my sample band 9 answer below.

Sample Answer

Like most people, I have seen countless adverts in my life and many of them have stuck in my mind, but the one that I can think of now is for John West’s canned salmon. It was a TV commercial that I saw a long time ago and it was really funny so I always remembered it.

The premise of the commercial was highlighting the efforts that fishermen go to in order to bring back salmon for their customers. However, instead of showing this in a serious light the company opted to depict a fisherman comically fighting a bear! The fight is choreographed so that it is clearly fake, as though the bear understands Kungfu. In the end, the fisherman beats the bear and steals its salmon.

I really like this advert for the same reason I like many others: because they are so funny that they are memorable. I think this is a very effective method of advertising. Traditionally, companies show off the quality of the product but nowadays there is so much competition that it is better just to get your brand into people’s minds. Even if the commercial has nothing to do with the product, it could still boost sales.

Notes on my Sample Answer

This is a pretty straightforward answer and it took me 01:20 to read it, which would be fine for IELTS. There is no particularly difficult vocabulary here except the word “choreographed.” However, this word was only important for my answer and would not necessarily help you with yours.

I have switched back and forth between “commercial” and “advert(isement)” in order to vary my language but please note that they are not always interchangeable. Make sure that you only use “commercial” for TV adverts.

IELTS Essays about Advertisement

Of course, the topic of advertisements could also appear in IELTS writing. There are many possibilities for this but I think that the ethics of advertising would be the most likely to arise. This means that you would be asked about advertising to children or issues like false advertising. (These topics could also occur in IELTS speaking part 3.)

Here is an example question:

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

This is a pretty simple task. You have to talk about two perspectives:

You also need to give your opinion and make it clear throughout the essay.

Here is my sample answer to this question:

Sample Band 9 Answer

Since the early twentieth century, advertising has held tremendous sway over people’s lives. Some people think that it persuades us to buy things, but others claim that it has lost its effectiveness. This essay will look at both views but ultimately conclude that advertising is still as powerful as ever.

To begin with, people argue that advertising has lost its impact because it is so prevalent, and there is certainly some basis for thinking this. It is hard to deny that most people nowadays are aware of advertising and that many of them make efforts to avoid it. When using websites or apps, it is so common to see adverts littering the page that the average person can basically ignore them, which obviously diminishes their power to some extent.

However, it should be clear that the advertisers are aware of this and constantly innovate in order to attract attention. Although people are now aware of them, adverts still have a strong influence over what people buy because the people who create them are incredibly gifted at implanting subtle messages. Data harvesting by search engines and social media sites has also made advertising much more targeted, allowing companies to pitch products to specific demographics rather than attempting to show their product to the greatest number of people. This means that even people who avoid adverts are likely to be influenced after seeing one. Advertising is a science that is developing quickly and will continue to dictate our shopping habits for years to come.

In conclusion, people are generally more aware of advertising than they used to be and many try to avoid it, but that does not mean that it has lost its power. Adverts still exert influence over our lives because they are more intelligently designed than they used to be.

Advertising Essays – Sample #2

advertisements and ielts

Here is another IELTS writing task 2 question about advertising. This one is really interesting so I wanted to include it here:

Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

While our first example was very straightforward, I find that this one is much more challenging. It has some subtleties that people might overlook. We can come to a better understanding by paraphrasing it:

To what extent do you agree that people buy things because of advertising?

My personal opinion is that people buy things partially because of effective advertising. I do not believe that it is purely because of this, but I think I could write a good essay that leans towards agreement.

Remember: You can give a strong opinion, a weak opinion, or a balanced opinion . Just be consistent throughout your essay!

As globalization sweeps the world in the twenty-first century, people appear to have become more materialistic. Expensive consumer goods produced by companies like Apple and Nike are sold in all corners of the globe, and for many people they are must-have items. Some people believe that this is all down to advertising rather than actual necessity. This essay will argue in support of that position.

It should be abundantly clear that many of the popular consumer goods that dominate markets around the world are not items of objective importance, but rather ones of purely superficial appeal. People need things like food and clothing, as well as some items that enable them to work or travel, but certain products are just luxury items. Take, for example, the iPhone. There are countless other devices on the market that can fulfill the main functions of an iPhone without the jaw-dropping price tag. However, in almost every country, people want to own one of these status symbols. The reason is simply that it has been marketed well, and owning one makes a person look successful and wealthy.

If the real needs of society were reflected in sales, rather than the popularity of certain luxury items, our economies would look very different. Fashionable brands would not be as wealthy as ones making affordable, simple products. Yet it is those items that are carefully advertised on TV, on the internet, and at sports events, which captivate people and cause them to make unwise purchases or form irrational brand loyalties. Look at how Apple overtook Microsoft, or how Nike easily outsells any humble, local shoemaker.

In conclusion, it is clear that sales are dictated not by a product’s necessity, but rather by its appeal to consumers, and this appeal is created through slick advertising campaigns.

Advertising in IELTS Reading and Listening

It is pretty difficult to predict the sort of material you would encounter for these parts of the exam because the possibilities are nearly endless. However, you can prepare by going on news websites (like the BBC ) to read or listen to articles about adverts. This will help you learn new vocabulary, perfect your spelling or pronunciation, and get ideas to use in your own IELTS answers.

IELTS essay, topic: Advertising affects what people think is important and has a negative effect on their lives (agree/disagree)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

Today people are surrounded by advertising. This affects what people think is important and has a negative impact on people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

With the advent of the Internet, advertisements, originally displayed only on TV, billboards, posters and so on, are becoming increasingly ubiquitous and commonplace for the general public. In my view, this kind of impact could be both crucial and, on a certain level, detrimental.

On the one hand, this phenomenon could denote that although we have already had a diverse range of , people are still capable of inventing innovative approaches catering for all kinds of requirements of advertising. It is a symbol that demonstrates the creativity rooted in human beings. Apart from that, it also represents that the speed of spreading information is conspicuously escalating. More purposeful is, therefore, the fact that, besides booming of the advertising, it constitutes a major reason why people could be so prosperous in this digital age.

essay on advertising ielts

On the other hand, there are various unpleasant consequences as well. Firstly, with the omnipresent , it could potentially cause people to do impulsive shopping. Secondly, the , if regulated in a mismanaged , could make people constantly feel uncomfortable or annoyed. In this sense, instead of being an instrumental tool to promote amenities, advertisements could be considered a hindrance when people are frequently blocked by them. Furthermore, it would cost one precious time to have to sift the helpful ad from a host of others.

In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, advertising is a beneficial phenomenon for all with a number of insignificant drawbacks. I believe that in the future we can improve the way advertising is done at present, and embrace the positive influence of advertising even further in the long run.

This essay is another example of what Band 8 writing may look like. It’s weak point is that the author goes slightly off-topic while trying to discuss whether advertising affects what people view as important and instead talks about the reason advertising is spreading and about human creativity. However, the other part of task type (negative effects of advertising) is covered well, the ideas are well-developed and supported. There is a clear logical flow of information and a range of transitional words is used appropriately to sequence ideas. The way author uses synonyms to rephrase the task topic in the intro paragraph demonstrates their lexical skill, which is also evident in other parts of this essay. There are many complex sentences and very few errors. Overall, this essay seems worthy of IELTS Band 8.0.

4 thoughts on “IELTS essay, topic: Advertising affects what people think is important and has a negative effect on their lives (agree/disagree)”

Advertisement has the main role of developing countries. advertisement is shown on the internet ,tv or radio .it has good aspects as well as bad aspects.it gets more income for the company All the company dont show their products or facilities on tv or internet .for example, one company show his product and gets more money but another company dont show his product and dont get money. On the other hand ,it helps purchasers to know the quality of the product before they buy it .also ,the company and tv or radio benefit of advertising the product In conclusion, advertisment has more advantage than disadvantage ,it helps people enjoy todays life in the world

Nowadays, people are enveloped with the advertisements of many product and services offered by the companies as well as individuals. Modern marketing techniques has impacted the public on a high scale to decide what is good, bad, essential and important to them. Necessarily, in my opinion, advertising is required to reach out to the customers while keeping them authentic. In this ever-growing competitive world, organizations as well as local sellers find it challenging to sell their products due to the availability of many alternatives. One of the best ways to promote their services are through novel publicizing ideas that should reach the target customers. On the other end, the needy customer may not know about an existing item if it doesn\’t appear in their day to day activities, and so, it is imperative to bring them to their doorsteps. When many commercials persuade the audience to buy their product with false and incorrect information, others do it truthfully whose core business ethics is strong. Finding a difference between a bogus and genuine advertisement lies within the audience\’s virtue. Easily manipulative people often end up losing their hard-earned money and trust in these fake companies & their products. Moreover, the public often think or enquire less, when an instant application of that product is necessary. For instance, a diabetic patient who falls short in his/her daily supplies would opt for an alternative medicine without looking deep into its credibility that can exacerbate their medical condition. In conclusion, the media board of the country should step up their measures to ensure the authenticity of the advertisements before they reach the public regardless the medium, whether it is through television, digital media, postures, banners, etc.

Recent Exam IELTS Writing Task 2: Advertising

Recent Exam IELTS Writing Task 2: Advertising

Here is a recent question  that appeared in IELTS writing exam. In this article we will provide you the model answer to the question along with the important vocabulary and phrases in the passage.

The question as quoted in the Writing Section II in the IELTS Writing Exam

Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things that we really do not need. others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives., which view point do you agree with.

Analysing the question we see that it is about  advertisements and if they are needed or are misleading for a consumer.  According to the demand of the question  you need to stick to one viewpoint and write about it.

Before going ahead to read the model answer, we would recommend you to write the answer to the question yourself. Then go ahead to read the model answer to get a better idea.

The model band-7 answer:

In a literal sense, advertising is an art of showcasing a product to its future consumers. When a company or a person advertise a product he is conveying how the product would benefit the consumer with its unique and best features. Since the inception of consumer markets merchants have been using advertising and marketing to sell their product and increase their reach to maximum consumers. I am in absolute discord with the statement that advertising insists people to buy things they do not need. In my view, advertising is a key tool in the market mechanism and can benefit customers and ultimately merchants in several ways like spreading awareness, increasing competition, discourage monopoly and help the overall economy.

Advertising has helped and is continuing to help spread the right information and makes a consumer cognizant of what is available in the market. It helps drive the competition upwards benefitting the end customer by getting varied options to choose. For example, when ‘Colgate’ came in the market as the first toothpaste, consumers did not have any other option other than Colgate until other companies like ‘Close-up’ started advertising their product. This resulted in a boost in the competition which ultimately slashed the prices of the product. Thus, Advertising plays a very important role in engaging the end customer such that the buyer gets the best worth of what he is spending. While a consumer is the end target and beneficiary of any product produced by a merchant, a consumer is also the best judge of the decisions he takes in terms of what he wants to buy. In my opinion, it is inappropriate to blame the advertising for an increased consumer spending. To curb the unnecessary spending both people and government have to work collectively. People need to be wary of their spending and pay heed to their finances by managing them smartly. A government can play its part in authorising and monitoring the right contents to be published to the public. Hence, right and smart advertising can help a nation and its population in great ways by exploiting the benefits of advertising.

To draw the conclusion, barring a few disadvantages Advertising can be used as a tool to enhance the growth of an economy by increasing the spending, bringing the right products to the consumer, boosting the competition. Even Government can use smart adverts to make people aware of managing their finances and increase financial literacy. All in all, I would recommend healthier advertising to benefit the consumer, merchant and ultimately the world economy.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we don't really need. Others say that advertisements tells us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

In today's world, advertisement has become a significant tool for marketing a product. While some argue that advertisement increases awareness about products that may improve our lives, others are of the opinion that advertisement induces people to buy unnecessary things. I strongly believe that the latter is more correct, as will  be explained.

To promote a product, companies generally propagate only its the brighter side, thus providing an incomplete picture of the product. When only positive aspects are known, there is an inclination to buy that product ; thus, we end up purchasing something which is not required. One such example is herbal products and weight loss supplements. In data published by the magazine India Today, the use of herbal products to reduce weight has seen significant increase in the recent years, whereas health experts are of the opinion that weight can only be controlled through proper diet and exercise. Many of my friends who used such medicines have later repented their choice.

Moreover, children are easily attracted by advertisements. Nowadays, most of the teenagers like to own a smart phone which is a result of mass advertisement. Recently a school in UK banned children from using mobile phones inside school premises, as cellphones were the major cause of distraction which affected their studies.

In conclusion, it can be said that an advertisement creates an impression on consumer's mind and people end up buying an undesired product. Thus, a thorough research before buying is strongly recommended.

  • Opinion Argument Cause Solution essay on Advertising for ielts

There are plenty of Advertisement essays topics which are recently examined in the IELTS test for both General Training and Academic. Here are some of them.

Advertising influences people to buy things such as clothes and shoes. What are the problems caused by that? What solutions can be given? Advertising encourages consumers to buy in quantity rather than promoting quality. To what extent do you agree or disagree? There is an increasing amount of advertising directed at children which encourages them to buy goods such as toys and snacks. Many parents are worried that these advertisements put too much pressure on children, while some advertisers claim that they provide useful information to children. Discuss both views and give your opinion. The society would benefit from a ban on all forms of advertising because it serves no useful purpose, and can even be damaging. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Consumers are faced with increasing numbers of advertisements from competing companies. To what extent do you think are consumers influenced by advertisements? What measures can be taken to protect them? Nowadays, a lot of advertisements are aimed at children. Some people think there are lots of negative effects on children and should ban advertisements. To what extent do you agree or disagree? If a product is good or it meets people needs, people will buy it. So advertising is unnecessary and no more than entertainment. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In this article, we are going to write a model answer for the below discussion essay.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Advertising encourages consumers to buy in quantity rather than promoting quality. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Model band 8 IELTS essay answer

Advertisement plays an important role to influence customers buying extra products instead of supporting a quality product. In my opinion, I strongly agree with the statement, especially because of offers and competition between the items as well as the health problem from the product.

The most important reason for consumers to purchase excessive items is because of the promotion they made available. It is often observed that retailers sell their clearance or outdated product by offering promotions, such as buy-one-get-one-free, to attract purchasers and trade more items. For instance, I have bought four pairs of sports shoes, made Puma, as it was on sale buy 4 pairs on the price of two. This has made me purchase additional unnecessary things.

Another point to consider is increasing competition among quality products. At present, although the high-grade items or services could be sold easily, in today's competitive world a wide range of organizations actively indulged in promoting their products which costs them significantly with curtailing the manufacturing expenses. This ultimately results in degradation of the final product.

Finally, there are many adverts, which associate with junk food promotion, including KFC, McDonald, that attracts the majority of people, especially children. Such advertisements mention neither the condition of the food and its ingredients nor its effects on human health. If the advertising agencies had stated the excellence of their product, today, diseases like obesity would not have taken birth in many developed countries.

In conclusion, I completely believe that almost all adverts put efforts into selling their product in larger quantity by offering various promotions and do not think about their customer's health.

Some People Say that Advertising is Extremely Successful- IELTS Writing Task 2

Limited-Time Offer : Access a FREE 10-Day IELTS Study Plan!

The Essay Writing section of the IELTS Writing Module can be a difficult task for many IELTS Aspirants. Thus, it is vital that you polish your essay writing skills before attempting the IELTS.

Below is a sample IELTS Essay for the IELTS Essay topic:

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Discussion Essay

Introduction

Sentences 1&2 – Paraphrase the topic with the use of synonyms to create an understanding of it.

Sentence 3 – Mention that advertisements are still compelling because it creates the desire for the products it is selling.

Body paragraphs

Paragraph 1 – Talk about how advertisements have played an indispensable role in persuading people to buy products.

Paragraph 2 – Talk about how advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it.

Restate your views.

Sample Essay

Some people feel that advertising effectively influences consumers’ buying decisions. In contrast, others claim that it is so commonplace and, as a result, cannot draw people’s attention anymore. Although social media has made advertising more common than ever before, I think it is still compelling because it creates the desire for the products it is selling.

On the one hand, nowadays, industries are using a plethora of marketing strategies such as captivating packaging designs, coupons, hefty discounts and other alluring offers to attract customers and amplify their sales. Moreover, not only do some companies reach their target audience with the help of sophisticated technological advancements such as email newsletters and online promotions but they also increase their customer count. For instance, according to a survey conducted by the Times of India, there was a massive rise in online sales in the past five years with a considerable change in the advertising strategies used to charm consumers. Hence, it is discernible that although there are reforms in the advertising approaches, they still have an indispensable job to play in persuading people.

On the other hand, as most people are aware of the traps of these advertisements, they are now avoided. Online advertising is an excellent example of this. Potential customers scarcely click on or even glance at a website’s combination of pop-up ads, banners, spam or promotional mailing list requests, and auto-playing video advertisements. These have become so frequent that consumers have evolved the unconscious practice of skipping ads on YouTube, swiftly closing pop-ups and scrolling past in-page advertisements. Advertisers have struggled to counter this by making their marketing less conspicuous, like ads that resemble actual posts on social media sites like Instagram. Still, their sheer frequency means they can quickly identify and do not stand out.

In conclusion, in my opinion, in some ways, giant advertisements have achieved their objective of persuading demand amongst consumers, to the extent that we tend to buy and possess multiple products. Regardless, to a smaller extent, we do not pay attention to some advertising on various media channels.

Nowadays, It is commonly believed that advertising is the best way to engross people towards the product. Meanwhile, some argues that people do not pay attention to such advertisement. In my opinion, advertisement is the best way to intrigue people towards the product and it has some benefits as well, and I’ll be disccussing both views in the following paragraphs.

On the one hand, It is argued by some people that commercial is vitally important to attract the people to buy items because it will benefit the company in many ways such as incresing revenue, production sells increases profit also increases. Moreover, having commercial of the items and representing a sneap peak of the best feature of the product increases curiosity of the people to buy thier product. For example, take an iphone commercial the advetisement was very small, simple and minimalistic still eye catching. They gave a small peak of their new iphone design with 3 back camera, we can also able to record 4k videos, which people found very attracting and after that advert the company has already acquire millions of prebook of this product before even launching it. That is why some people think that advertisement is necessary.

On the other hand, some people think that commercials such as billiboard, flyers, displays, and more no longer be attractive. The reason behind it is they find it very annoying and frustrating. In addition to this, some people are very busy in their day to day life so they do not have time for paying attention to any advertisment. For instance, Youtube and Netfilx there are some 5 seconds or 10 seconds adverts before the video start ot in the middle of the video which quite annoying and nobody like it, so everybody skip the advert so that they can enjoy the video they are watching.

In conclusion, I think that any type or method of advertisement it vital to attract the people attention even if, it was annoying or frustrating for some people. However, thats not the case for some peole who never skip the advertisement and were interested in buying the products.
