Since the first “Despicable Me” movie premiered in 2010, fans have not been able to get enough of Gru and his minions. One of the ways fans have shown their love is through memes .

How the Gru meme (aka Gru’s plan meme) began

The Gru meme, also referred to as the Gru’s plan meme, is an exploitable four-panel comic series based on a scene in the movie where Gru presents a plan to steal the moon to the Bank of Evil, which lends money to villains to do their evil deeds. Gru uses panels to explain his plan, which includes stealing a shrinking ray, shrinking the moon, and stealing it.

But midway through his presentation, Gru finds that one of his panels has been altered with childish drawings by his three adopted daughters, causing him to stare at a drawing of himself of the toilet in confusion. 

In March 2018, Reddit user FieldMarshalSixDans uploaded a version of the meme using screen grabs from the scene in a post to the subreddit r/deepfriedmemes. The easily manipulatable panel gained widespread popularity with others posting their own versions of what Gru appears to be presenting and using the meme to showcase how a well-thought-out plan can go very wrong.

Fellow Redditor charizard77 uploaded an edit of the meme about daylight savings time to r/memes, which gained 4,600 upvotes in 24 hours. Another Redditor, 4k60fpsHDR, used the meme template to post about the education system and received 6,000 in the same amount of time. 

Another Redditor, Pawaaar, later posted a GIF version of the meme, in which Gru presented panels that read, “Make a GIF version of this meme,” “Spend two hours making it,” and “Get 2 upvotes.” The post received more than 32,000 upvotes in just six hours. 

The meme gained further popularity that year when YouTuber Pewdiepie included the Gru’s plan meme in an episode of his series called “Meme Review.” The video received millions of views in the first 24 hours it was uploaded to the platform.

The meme’s depiction of how someone can start out confident but have their plans fall apart allowed for it to be translated into various contexts. 

Offshoots of the Gru meme

When the creators of “Despicable Me” came up with the concept for characters known as the “minions,” they had no idea how big a hold these little yellow guys would have on fans. Audiences latched on to the silly creatures for their comedic relief and made them the subject of thousands of memes.

In 2022, the spin-off movie “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was released in theaters and resulted in a popular TikTok meme where fans, especially teenage boys, started to attend screenings of the movie wearing suits. 

The meme appears to have started with TikToker @bill.hirst, who shared one of the earliest known Gentleminions videos when the movie premiered in Australia, where the TiKToker and his friends live.

Soon, others followed and the meme spread worldwide with large groups of boys dressed in formalwear watching the movie and cheering during the film. However, some fans went too far with the trend. Many theater workers began to upload complaints to TikTok about the mess that these groups left in theaters, and cinemas soon began to ban audience members who appeared to be taking part in the trend.

Good memes are flexible and enjoyable for a wide range of people, and one particularly hilarious meme is inspired by Gru's chaotic planning scene.

The recent announcement of Despicable Me movies returning to Netflix will allow many fans of the franchise to reconnect with the iconic minions, and hopefully, help introduce its vibrant characters to younger generations.In the 2010 installment, Gru is using signboards to illustrate his plan to steal the moon. He intends to enlist an evil banker to fund his enterprise, but in the middle of his presentation, Gru discovers that his foster daughters have inserted something of a surprise. That is a sketch of him on the toilet, which confuses him and forces him to stop his explanation. Since then, the images have been used for a variety of memes with different purposes, each one funnier than the latter.

Minions Steal The Spotlight

When the creators of Despicable Me came up with the concept of "some yellow annoying things", otherwise known as minions, they were far from knowing how big their hold on the franchise would become.

Audiences loved them from the get-go precisely because of their comic relief capacity. This is summed up by the thousands of memes like this one and found its peak in their own 2015 self-titled movie Minions .

The Meme Fail

Memes spread like wildfire among every online community, including some more apparent cultural niches like those gamers who prefer horror . Their success means that some, like this one, focus on meme creation itself.

However, when social media users post memes at odd hours, and thanks to different time zones around the globe, their memes may not be spread as quickly as they would have liked. That is certainly the case here, with a very confused Gru not knowing what to do about the end result of posting a meme at three am.

No Rest For The Wicked

As it so often happens, Gru's memes have been thoroughly used to poke fun at some pretty frustrating common-life situations.

In this particular case, Gru's confusion is due to his sleeping schedule backfiring. Despite planning to go to bed early, he still fails to wake up early. Instead, his next step only includes the words "wake up", meaning that he will rise at any given hour, no matter when he went to bed.

Memefying Economics

Even economics cannot escape meme culture, and the Gru planning meme is the perfect way to make fun of economic predictions going sour.

An elastic good corresponds to a particular kind of item whose demand shifts according to its price changes. The plan of many businesses is to increase the prices to obtain more profit. But, as Gru quickly realized, this may have a side effect: demand of the product may decrease and thus any monetary extra gain. Thankfully, this was not the case with Minions: The Rise Of Gru , one of the biggest box office openings as of July 2022.

Every Writer's Conundrum

Every writer out there, including the most Oscar-nominated writers , struggles to bring their visions into the blank page.

Sometimes, they may have great ideas for plot, characters, lore, and a fully-fleshed world. Nonetheless, they freeze when faced with how to write it down. This could be due to their inability to produce new work or because they are experiencing a creative slowdown, both conditions associated with writer's block and expressed in a comic way by this meme.

Planning An Exuberant D&D Character

It takes time and a lot of preparation to create a Dungeons and Dragons' character, especially if it is the first time playing the game.

For those who want to keep it simple, the fifth edition of the role-playing game allows the creation of fully playable humans. However, many players may perceive this race as a somewhat boring one due to its simplistic stats and often less-than-mystic background. As Gru suggests in this meme, players can always count on an entertainer background to spice things up. This will provide a lot of cool features to the character, making the gaming experience more interesting.

The Meme Wars

For years, Reddit had been the main platform for sharing memes, and many of its users fear that Reddit will end now that it has to compete with other social media. Recently, Redditors have found some rivalry against Instagram users.

Trying to prevent this from happening, they began creating and sharing memes that imply a war between the two platforms. On this one, Gru's plan includes the production of memes with the Reddit avatar so that its copyrights avoid Instagram users from sharing them on their platform. However, he did not account for the fact that by not sharing also prevents these memes' dissemination and thus their online success.

A Naturally Chaotic Party

Dungeon Masters usually spend a lot of time creating a lore-filled world where their players' backstories and abilities can shine. They draw inspiration from mythology, books, and fantasy movies for their D&D campaigns .

Since it is a freestyle role-playing game, the same players are only bound to the rules of the world, their races, and classes, but they have the freedom to choose how to proceed in each mission. It can constitute a frustrating experience for a DM when they have, like Gru, every bit of information laid out and within players' reach, and still the characters decide to go blind into, for instance, a dangerous "haunted well", risking not only their lives but the entire campaign as well.

A Wild Rift On Memes

Online games like League of Legends and Call of Duty require reliance on teammates during campaigns. But one of the most frustrating things online gamers deal with - particularly in first-person shooters is the dreaded camping.

Camping is where a teammate stays in one spot the whole time, usually somewhere advantageous like a spawn point. Although it is good for the individual it's considered bad form and bad teamwork as it effectively means abandoning the other players to the enemy increasing their chances of dying or being knocked out of play. This sometimes, as Gru figured out, this often leads to some missed opportunities and chances to win.

A popular app, Duolingo offers its users the opportunity to learn other languages. It uses the concept of a skill tree to check progress, with the idea being to take a small amount of time per day to learn vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. When users miss or skip a day of learning, they may lose their day streak, which means that they will be forced to repeat some classes in order to progress... and suffer a visit from the Duolingo owl.

The Duolingo's owl has become somewhat of a meme in its own right as its little notifications and reminders can sometimes take on a somewhat sinister tone; something Gru fears like many others. Missing a day means the threat of another dreaded notification from the slightly scary Duolingo owl.

“Gru's Plan” is a series of images taken from the 2010 movie Despicable Me, featuring Gru, the villainous protagonist of the movie. Most versions of this meme include four images of Gru lecturing next to signboards on an easel, with the boards labeled with whatever the creator wants to add.

The first three panels show Gru speaking with a confidently evil expression. However, in the third panel the board is labeled with something surprising or mistaken, and the fourth panel shows Gru looking back at the same board with a dismayed look on his face.

In the movie scene the images are taken from, Gru is using a series of signboards to explain his plot to steal the moon to an evil banker he hopes will finance him. In the middle of his presentation, he discovers that his foster daughters have inserted a drawing of him sitting on the toilet among his signs, causing him to stop in confusion and alarm mid-lecture.

The humor of this meme comes from seeing Gru confused and deflated as he realizes the flaw in his plan. Spotting that a plan is going wrong just as it's too late to stop yourself is an experience we can all empathize with. And there's plenty of schadenfreude in watching someone else go through the same thing.

Since the signboards are blank, this meme can be filled in with any "brilliant plan" that the creator wants to mock, such as unpopular moves by video game or pop culture creators, political commentary, or social observations.

Gru’s Plan Memes

The Brief: A meme with images from the film Despicable Me  illustrates the experience of realizing that there's a major flaw in your plan.

In the 2010 film Despicable Me , the character Gru – an aspiring supervillain voiced by Steve Carrell –presents his plan to steal the moon. To his surprise, one of the illustrations for his presentation has been swapped out by a child with a drawing of him on the toilet. When he realizes this, Gru’s enthusiasm for his plan quickly changes to confusion and embarrassment.

This scene has been turned into a four-panel meme. It shows someone passionately presenting a plan until they realize that it has a major flaw. Versions of the meme swap out Gru’s drawing with text, and sometimes Photoshop someone else’s face onto Gru’s. The format is often used to show historical figures becoming aware of their upcoming downfall or demise.

• The minions . Somehow, they've mutated from a Mascot Mook to the symbol of " Facebook wine moms" everywhere.
• Hella Gay Explanation  Commonly on Reddit and Discord, images of Gru have been used to call other users "hella gay" depending on their positions in posts. Many variations have spawned, examples including "Ultra Gru", "Infinite Gay", and Cuphead 's "Triple Gay" meme.
• Gru is 14 feet tall. Explanation  Tumblr user drkinfession made a post calling Gru "the most powerful being in the universe", talking about how he is able to dodge missiles inhumanly fast in the first movie and break a shark's spine by punching it. Most notably, the post mentions that if the Minions are 3.5 feet tall, and Gru is as tall as four Minions, then he is actually 14 feet tall. The original post became a copypasta, and a lot of fans like pretending Gru is canonically fourteen feet tall.

• Gru's presentation Explanation  Gru presents a slideshow to Mr. Perkins in an attempt to get funding for his scheme, with the girls messing with the third part by replacing it with a crude drawing of Gru on the toilet. This has been snowcloned to hell and back, most commonly having someone do a double-take at a blatantly idiotic third step of their plan or the plan having a disastrously undignified outcome.
• "I will stuff you ALL in the crust!" Explanation  In the same scene as Gru's presentation, the girls pester him to order pizza for dinner, specifically one with cheese stuffed in the crust. He is so fed up with them that he yells this at them and two Minions who walked in at the same time.
• "CURSE YOU TINY TOILET!" Explanation  Victor says this after shrinking his own toilet and it squirts water at him.
• "Does this count as annoying?" Explanation  Agnes patting her cheeks when asking Gru if it's annoying when he told the girls not to do anything annoying. This scene became popular, particularly due to a viral edit where Agnes' cheek patting is synced to Martin Garrix's "Animals".
• " WHAAAAAAAAT? " Explanation  The Big "WHAT?!" that one of the Minions says is a popular sound effect that has been associated with them.
• "Liiiightbulb!" Explanation  Gru says this whenever he gets an idea.
• "Knocked oooooveeeeer!" Explanation  Gru says this when he blows up the concession stand at the theme park due to the employee's attitude over Agnes not getting her unicorn plush. Multiple edits of this scene exist on YouTube.
• "Do you want to explode?" Explanation  Asked by Dr. Nefario to Edith when she nearly drinks from a potion bottle with no clear indication what's in it.
• OH YEAH! Explanation  Vector's catchphrase. Vector himself is such a Fountain of Memes that this phrase can be expected to follow in the wake of any mention of him.
• " Oh, poop " Explanation  Vector's defeat in the first movie, In March 2019 edits of him have been used for a green screen effect.
• "Wow! This is garbage. You actually like this?" Explanation  Taken from the scene where Gru delivers his opinion on the story he reads to the girls. It's seen use as a reaction image for all manners of Take That! .

Explanation  The first teaser trailer for Despicable Me 2 featured the Minions singing a silly song about potatoes and bananas set to the tune of The Beach Boys ' "Barbara Ann". • Gru whispering, " El macho... " has become a form of praise on Spanish-speaking parts of the Internet. There also has been a joke about fans of El Macho being called "machistas", which is actually the Spanish word for " male chauvinist ."

• Gru vs Megamind Explaination  Since Will Ferrell is going to be the villain of this sequel and his movie, Megamind came out the same year as the first Despicable Me , the connections weren’t lost on people.
• AI is secretly the Minions Explaination  A Super Bowl commercial for the film takes a potshot at AI by showing Minions making AI-generated images and posting them on the internet for their own amusement.
• Khmer Rouge Minions / "What were the Minions doing between 1975 and 1979?" Explanation  Since Pol Pot memes blew up in popularity around the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru , people started adding two and two together, making memes specifically about the Minions serving the Khmer Rouge.

"Give me RCB bowlers or I retire"- Top 10 funny memes after GT edges past RR in an epic cliffhanger in IPL 2024

G ujarat Titans (GT) beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) by four wickets in the 24th match of IPL 2024 on Wednesday at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. It was the first loss for RR this season after four successive wins.

GT captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bowl. RR batters Sanju Samson (68*) and Riyan Parag (76) smashed aggressive half-centuries to power RR to a daunting total of 196/3 in the first innings. Rashid Khan was the pick of Titans bowlers, ending with economical bowling figures of 4-0-18-1.

In response, GT got off to a sedate start as both their openers couldn't score briskly. After a labored innings of 35 (29), Sai Sudharsan departed in the 9th over, ending the 68-run opening partnership.

Shubman Gill then continued to anchor the innings at the other end and kept his side in the hunt with a decent knock of 72 (44). However, Gill couldn't finish the job as he perished in the 16th over, trying to play a big shot against Yuzvendra Chahal . Rashid Khan (24*) and Rahul Tewatia (22) played blazing cameos in the end and helped GT win the match in a last-ball thriller.

Fans on social media enjoyed the IPL 2024 match between GT and RR on Wednesday night. They expressed their reactions to the action by sharing hilarious memes on social media.
