DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

IIT HYDERABAD

04-04-2024 : List of candidates selected for the special round of PhD admissions in February 2024 is here.

30 Mar 2024 : The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at IIT Hyderabad invites applications for admissions to Ph.D. programme for the July 2024 intake. Application link can be found here. Application deadline: 20th April, 2024.

Candidates are requested to note the following points about PhD admission.

  • After applying at the application portal, candidates must note down their application-ID and also save the pdf of their application.
  • Note that any candidate who has applied for PhD and paid the fee is eligible to appear for the written-test.
  • Shortlisting based on eligibility criterion will be done after the written-test.
  • It is the responsibility of the candidate himself/herself to go through the eligibility criterion mentioned on this page below and ensure that he/she meets the criterion. He/she should apply for PhD admission only if he/she meets the criterion.
  • No relaxation in eligibility criterion will be given in any case. A student found not meeting eligibility criterion will not be interviewed/selected or given any travelling allowance, regardless of his/her score in the written-test.

PERCENTAGE TO GPA CONVERSION RULE

As for the percentage to GPA conversion, the following rule applies.

  • If candidate’s university has provided GPA corresponding to the percentage on the transcript, or if his/her university prescribes some formula for conversion, then, that will apply. This formula should be mentioned clearly on University website and/or candidate’s transcript.
  • Otherwise, the following formula, will apply: GPA = percentage/10 If the GPA of the candidate is not in the scale of 10 but in the scale of K (e.g., 4 or 8), then: GPA = GPAOnScaleK*10/(K) Here, GPAOnScaleK is candidate’s GPA on the scale of K. For GPA, rounding-off will not be done. For example, if a candidate’s GPA is 6.98 and the GPA criterion is 7.00, then, the candidate will not be considered as eligible.

PhD Programmes

Regular phd programme.

PhD is a research programme whose centerpiece is the dissertation. The course work and the qualifiers are there to ensure the necessary breadth in the areas for the student. The semester-wise courses and the planning of PhD study is dependent on the students background.

A PhD student takes the relevant courses in the first one or two semesters, depending on the background, just like a student of MS by research. After the first year, the student works on clearing the PhD qualifying exam which tests his or her breadth of knowledge in the field of study. This is followed by the PhD proposal defense where the depth of the knowledge of the student in his field of dissertation is tested.

The PhD is awarded on completion of thesis followed by successful thesis defense. Research Exchange Programme allows a PhD student to spend time abroad.

External PhD Programme

This programme allows highly meritorious out-of-station candidates to enroll for PhD and carry out the main part of their research from their home institute. They are required to spend their first semester for course work in the institute, and again for a semester later while carrying out their research.

Research Exchange Programme

The Institute has extremely ambitious programmes for the creation of the next generation of researchers, faculty members and innovators called the Research Exchange Programme. The candidate registers for PhD and spends even amount of time at the Institute and with a partner research group abroad. Financial support is guaranteed at both ends. He may also obtain his PhD from the partner research group abroad. The partnership has been worked out with leading research groups at CMU, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Illinois among others.

Embark on an Extraordinary Journey: Join Our Prestigious Ph.D. Programme

how to do phd in hyderabad

Enrolling in a research degree program is a long-term commitment requiring students to delve deeper into a specific study area. Students collaborate with their supervisor and the doctoral committee shortly after enrollment to brainstorm potential problems. Through a thorough literature review, the team identifies gaps and formulates a hypothesis. This step is crucial and significant for the student.

Once the hypothesis is formulated, students, supervisors, and other academic companions identify appropriate methodologies to conduct in-depth experiments and gather evidence. This marks the beginning of your investigation. You'll face many challenges during this four to five-year journey. Not all experiments will yield the desired results, and sometimes you will need to change your experimental tools or revisit the proposed hypothesis.

UoH adopts NET for PhD admissions

With an intake of 355 seats, the university announced PhD admissions to 43 different courses for the academic year 2024-25. Except for eight programmes, the admissions in other programmes will be via the NET scores.

UoH adopts NET for PhD admissions

Hyderabad : The University of Hyderabad (UoH) has decided to adopt National Eligibility Test (NET) scores for admissions to PhD programmes offered by it and issued a notification to this effect on May 6.

Sundeep Muppidi receives Fulbright US Scholar award for research in Telugu film

The university will hold its own entrance tests for PhD admissions to Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, Optometry & Vision Sciences, Nano science & Technology, Materials Engineering, Regional Studies, English Language Studies and Neural & Cognitive Science.

The UoH decision comes as the University Grants Commission (UGC) recently notified that the UGC-NET 2024 score can be used for PhD admission in place of entrance tests conducted by different universities.

However, some student organisations have condemned the notification and said such a decision would kill specializations and autonomy of the university. The NET scores are valid for admission for a period of one year. In a post, the AISA UoH unit claimed that notification mandates taking up the UGC-NET 2024 for PhD admission and “disregards” previous NET scores.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will be holding the UGC-NET in Social Science, Humanities, Management Studies and Computer Science streams.

The last date to apply is May 10. Likewise, the NTA will hold joint CSIR-UGC NET June 2024 in streams – chemical sciences, earth, atmospheric ocean and planetary sciences, life sciences, mathematical sciences and physical sciences and the deadline to submit application is May 21.

TISS follows all the guidelines and norms issued by the University Grants Commission from time to time in regulating the Ph.D. programmes such as “ University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.

The full-time and part-time Ph.D. programmes follow uniform standards such as successful completion of coursework, regular presentations before the Research Advisory Committees, stipulated time period to complete Ph.D., the evaluation and assessment methods of coursework and thesis. The Ph.D. degree certificate or Ph.D. award certificate of TISS does not make any distinction between full-time and part-time Ph.D. and both are treated equally.

The part-time Ph.D. students are working professionals who join Ph.D. programme by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from their organizations/employers that assures them providing leave and other support to complete the Ph.D. work. Those students who wish to apply under part-time Ph.D. mode are required to submit a NOC from their employer/organization clearly mentioning that (i) The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis. (ii) His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research. (iii) If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work.

TISS encourages professionals working in development sector, government employees, people working with grassroot organizations and corporate groups to join its Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode.

The full-time Ph.D. students are not working professional and devote their full time to the Ph.D. research. They are mostly receipts of various fellowships/scholarships and are required to put their attendance on daily basis in the Attendance Register maintained in the Doctoral Students’ Office (DSO) of the Institute. They are also required to attend the research seminars, talks arranged on regular basis by their schools and the DSO. Whenever, the full-time Ph.D. students get a job, they can request for converting their Ph.D. into part-time Ph.D.

Ph.D. Coursework : All the selected candidates for Ph.D. programme – both part-time and full-time are required to successfully complete the Ph.D. coursework which is a minimum of 12 credits, including a “Research and Publication Ethics” course as notified by UGC vide D.O. The Ph.D. Coursework will be offered in off-line regular classroom mode during the first semester of the Ph.D. programme. The part-time Ph.D. students may join regular classes along with full-time Ph.D. students or they have to attend the Ph.D. coursework that will be organized in six modular workshops in regular off-line mode spread across the first semester.

Is it time to turn off turnitin, use ai to get your students thinking critically, taming anxiety around public speaking, emotions and learning: what role do emotions play in how and why students learn.

Writing helps you share your work with the wider community. Your scholarship is important and you are making a valuable contribution to the field. While it might be intimidating to face a blank screen, remember, your first draft is not your final draft! The difficult part is getting something on the page to begin with.

As the adage goes, a good dissertation is a done dissertation, and the goal is for you to find balance in your writing and establish the steps you can take to make the process smoother. Here are some practical strategies for tackling the PhD dissertation.

Write daily

This is a time to have honest conversations with yourself about your writing and work habits. Do you tackle the most challenging work in the morning? Or do you usually start with emails? Knowing your work routine will help you set parameters for the writing process, which includes various elements, from brainstorming ideas to setting outlines and editing. Once you are aware of your energy and focus levels, you’ll be ready to dedicate those times to writing.

While it might be tempting to block a substantial chunk of time to write and assume anything shorter is not useful, that is not the case. Writing daily, whether it’s a paragraph or several pages, keeps you in conversation with your writing practice. If you schedule two hours to write, remember to take a break during that time and reset. You can try:

  • The Pomodoro Technique: a time management technique that breaks down your work into intervals
  • Taking breaks: go outside for a walk or have a snack so you can come back to your writing rejuvenated
  • Focus apps: it is easy to get distracted by devices and lose direction. Here are some app suggestions: Focus Bear (no free version); Forest (free version available); Cold Turkey website blocker (free version available) and Serene (no free version).

This is a valuable opportunity to hone your time management and task prioritisation skills. Find out what works for you and put systems in place to support your practice.

  • Stretch your work further by ‘triple writing’

Create a community

While writing can be an isolating endeavour, there are ways to start forming a community (in-person or virtual) to help you set goals and stay accountable. There might be someone in your cohort who is also at the writing stage with whom you can set up a weekly check-in. Alternatively, explore your university’s resources and centres because there may be units and departments on campus that offer helpful opportunities, such as a writing week or retreat. Taking advantage of these opportunities helps combat isolation, foster accountability and grow networks. They can even lead to collaborations further down the line.

  • Check in with your advisers and mentors. Reach out to your networks to find out about other people’s writing processes and additional resources.
  • Don’t be afraid to share your work. Writing requires constant revisions and edits and finding people who you trust with feedback will help you grow as a writer. Plus, you can also read their work and help them with their editing process.
  • Your community does not have to be just about writing!  If you enjoy going on hikes or trying new coffee shops, make that part of your weekly habit.  Sharing your work in different environments will help clarify your thoughts and ideas.

Address the why

The PhD dissertation writing process is often lengthy and it is sometimes easy to forget why you started. In these moments, it can be helpful to think back to what got you excited about your research and scholarship in the first place. Remember it is not just the work but also the people who propelled you forward. One idea is to start writing your “acknowledgements” section. Here are questions to get you started:

  • Do you want to dedicate your work to someone?
  • What ideas sparked your interest in this journey?
  • Who cheered you on?

This practice can help build momentum, as well as serve as a good reminder to carve out time to spend with your community.

You got this!

Writing is a process. Give yourself grace, as you might not feel motivated all the time. Be consistent in your approach and reward yourself along the way. There is no single strategy when it comes to writing or maintaining motivation, so experiment and find out what works for you.
