' src=

Go to the bottom of the page on my store front for information about how to access your e-books and lessons: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/ . For emails, always wait around 24 hours and check your spam folder in case it ends up in there.

' src=

I’m having the same problem. I can’t access my store. Hopefully it’ll get sorted tomorrow. Update: I’ve just checked it and it’s working fine again.

Hello Ma’am,

Which book I should purchase for ideas? I am confused between advanced book and ielts writing ideas?

I am facing issues with idea generation only.

I have two e-books. 1) Ideas for Essay Topics 2) Grammar for Writing Task 2 You will need the first one to learn ideas and vocabulary for topics. Here’s a link to my store: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

' src=

Thanks mam. It helps me a lot. I got 8 in writing.😇

Brilliant!! I’m really please for you – very well done 🙂 I’m so glad the e-book was useful 🙂

' src=

Hello Liz, where can I get a discount for your writing advanced lessons? Hope to hear from you soon.

You can find it here today and tomorrow: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

It looks like a very useful book. I have a question on the sample chapter here. To me, the ideas included in the chapter would work as main ideas, however, supporting ideas are not available here. Do you have any suggestion on how to develop supporting ideas?

People get confused about what supporting ideas are. Supporting points are just explanation. It means you explain the idea using an example or illustration or comparison or conditional statement or result or concession or cause etc etc. It is just about making the idea clearer. Each idea will be used and presented differently depending on the essay type and the question which is why supporting points are not something you learn ahead of time. This e-book provides you with main ideas for most common topics.

Dear Liz, I am from Bangladesh. I am facing some difficulties purchasing your ebook. Whenever I go to purchase the book, in the country section there is no mention of Bangladesh. How can I buy the book now?

If your country does not use paypal, you will need to ask a friend to buy the lessons for you.

' src=

Hello Liz, I need your help with one of the task 2 type question such as : In many places, new homes are needed, but only space available for building them is in countryside. Some people believe it is more important to protect country side and not build new homes. What is your opinion about this ? In such scenario do we explain both sides for the statement or just the one I agree with ? Thanks!

You give your opinion on the issues given. This means your opinion covers all aspects of the question. I’m not sure what you mean about both sides? There is only one issue in this question, not two issues. The issues are not building in the countryside or building in the city. The only issue is if you should build in the countryside. Your whole essay explains your view on this.

Oh, got it! Thank you Liz. I’ve my test day after tomorrow, wish me luck.

Best of luck!! 🙂

' src=

Hi Liz, thank you VERY MUCH for your effort ! I ‘ve got your classes on writing and i find them extremely helpful!

In my last IELTS the essay was about ” causes and problems of throwaway society”. Assuming the intro should follow your tips, and the body parts could be 1 for the causes and 1 for the problems, I will be grateful if you could me give some tips for the conclusion because I had an hard time trying to think how to end it.

Thanks Francesca

Most cause/problem or cause/solution essays have the causes in one body paragraph and the solutions in the other. The conclusion summarises the main points – focusing mostly on solutions.

' src=

please confirm me exact date and time when u will remove discount from e-book ?

It finished already, sorry.

' src=

Hi LIZ, I have just given my test IELTS Speaking part 1 Name and city? Do you live in a house or an apartment? Your favourite room? How often you smile? All 3 questions on a smile Part 3 cue card Talk a problem solved through internet? Name of the problem? How you solved the problem? How did you feel about? Follow up question On merits or demerits of the internet? Effect on children?

Thanks for sharing 🙂

IT is still available today – I will remove it tomorrow morning.

Dear Mam, I am trying to get your ebook of ideas for writing task-2. I have contacted a financial organization here in Bangladesh to make the payment on behalf of me using PayPal payment system. They asked me to make sure that how I can get the product after successful completion of the payment as there is no option of putting customer email address through which buyer would get the product. Moreover, in the country selection section, there is no option for selecting Bangladesh so that we cannot provide proper “Billing Address”. (Though there is a space below the Billing address section to put an email for receiving payment confirmation notification)

Please guide me in this regard so that I can get the e-book with the current discount rate before it gets expired. Thanks

If someone else buys it for you, you need to know the name and email used for the purchase (paypal usually gives an ID transaction number as well which is useful to have). With that information, I can check my records and send you the link personally.

I emailed you explaining the above situation, but after not having any response I made a comment here and you responded. Where should I send the transaction detail, here or in the email? If it is possible, I would like to share the information through email and you may send the e-book in reply. Thanks

It is best to send the information by email. However, please title the email: I made a Purchase and Need the Link. Because I get so many emails each day, it is important you use the right title to get my attention. I’ll look out for your email today.

' src=

Hi liz With the help of your videos and material I managed to secure overall 7.5 with barely one week of preparation. I had also used your material for ielts academicn in 2017 and managed to secure 7.5 with barely a weeks preparation. Now my wife also needs to give ielts and her overall score was 5.5 to 6 1 year back with 2 months preparation which included coaching. At present I have assumed responsibility of coaching her I just can’t figure out where to start. I would be genuinely grateful for some advice. Thank you

It’s best to start with a full practice test which you can get for free on the BC website. Then make a list of all the areas she needs to work on. It will also give you a starting point in terms of score which you can then reflect back on. For writing, start with basic structure, then work on variations for different essay questions, then other aspects of writing. For speaking, review the understanding of each part, then review common topics and common questions in each part. Once that is done, start recording practice questions for speaking and playing them back to hear what needs improving. There is no right or wrong way to start – just be systematic.

' src=

Hi Liz, Do you think your new ebook would work for TOEFL Writing Section as well?

I don’t know enough about TOELF to say, sorry.

' src=

I’m so pleased you are enjoying it and finding it useful 🙂 Thanks for letting me know. Your opinion means a lot to me 🙂

' src=

Hi Liz , Thank you so much for writing the e-book. I just purchased it, and already went through the first chapter on advertisements. I couldn’t stop myself from writing a comment , the book is amazing and to the point and worth buying. I am taking the IELTS in coming week, and striving to achieve an 8 on writing module of academic training. Regards, Sia

I’m so pleased 🙂 I really hope this will help you towards your band 8 goal. Remember that your aim in your essay is for accuracy in language and being on point, relevant, extended, organised and connected with ideas. Keep that in mind 🙂

IELTS essay topics, answers and ideas

Some people think that robots are important for human’s future development. Others think that robots have negative effects on society. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Ideas: Definitely important, true, big advances, productivity, intelligence, machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc

Can have negative effects – Unemployment – automation – loss of jobs – safe nets need to be in place – welfare system etc Even death of citizens – Tesla accident autonomous driving –

Conc: there are too many advantages to ignore, we cannot forego these advances however more precaution and govt. Legislation could be wise.

Some people think that new houses should be built in the same style as older houses in the local area. Others disagree and say that local authorities should allow people to build houses in the styles of their own choice. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Yes, should be in the same style, keep property values higher, uniformity, conformity, and cohesion –

EG certain villages in prosperous parts of England such as Cheshire, The Cotswolds, and Howarth have extreme rules because the areas have immense cultural heritage. To place a modern MacDonald’s style restaurant in one of these areas would be tantamount to architectural vandalism .

-Great idea! Innovates an area, and introduces new flavours, styles, and ideas into stale and old areas. Your house can reflect your personality. You can make it more environmentally friendly. You can install technical innovations. Solar panels, or even solar cells in roof tiles, are available from Elon Musk’s company.

Conc: both are viable and fair, the caveat is that the law should be clear from the beginning and be permanent – changing it would be extremely unfair.

Some people spend a lot of money attending cultural or sports events. Is it a good or a bad thing? Give your opinion and examples from your own experience.

Body paragraph 1

Definitely a good development, gives something for people to aspire to. It also most likely begets higher revenues for the performers and promoters , which should ultimately lead to even more events. This undoubtedly leads to greater monetary and cultural wealth for a society.

Take for example the English Premier League (EPL), this entertainment spectacle has brought considerable wealth into cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, and London. Higher ticket prices lead to better wages for football stars, which leads to more quality players wanting to play in the EPL, leading to a considerable increase in high net-worth individuals residing in these cities.

There has undoubtedly been a positive self-fulfilling cycle of improvement and quality, fuelled by increasing prices. Furthermore, high prices will most likely mean higher tax revenues for the government, this is definitely beneficial for society.

P2 – Same, but apply to a cultural event – ballet – opera???

IELTS essay topics and answer: education

Do you think it is better for students to work before their university studies? Why?  Use reasons and specific examples to support your choice.

MY ANSWER: YES! –  One position, easier to write, easier to read.

PARAGRAPH 1 Practical experience, contacts, on the job skills. EG: Studies from the UK Government show graduates with work experience are twice as likely to find employment…..

PARAGRAPH 2 Better preparation, the chance to improve social skills, close the gap between academia and private sector, helps the student decide on future before committing long term, EG 1/6 students will change their higher education course while at uni….

Many people believe that it’s better to learn something in a group rather than individually. Do you agree or disagree?

Paragraph 1 Agree – learning in a group has many advantages Elements of teamwork can be adopted A group can utilize each person’s skill and expertise

Paragraph 2 Disagree – Individualism is better Self reliant, own the result, not dependent on others More mature way, more responsible No laggards

For the full podcast, click here

IELTS essay topics and answer: education (child)

Some people believe that children should do organised activities in their free time while others believe that children should be free to do what they want to do in their free time. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

MY ANSWER: YES! –  One position, easier to write, easier to read.

PARAGRAPH 2 Better preparation, a chance to improve social skills, close the gap between academia and private sector, helps the student decide on future before committing long term, EG 1/6 students will change their higher education course while at uni….

Many people believe that it’s better to learn something in a group rather than individually. Do you agree or disagree?

Paragraph 1 Agree – learning in the group has many advantages Elements of teamwork can be adopted Group can utilize each person’s skill and expertise

Paragraph 2 Disagree – Individualism is better self-reliant, owning the result, not being dependent on others, being more mature way, and being more responsible. No laggards.

Many people say that globalization and the growing number of multinational companies have a negative effect on the environment. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

PARAGRAPH 1 -DEFINITELY DAMAGING THE ENVIRONMENT -Increased interaction between countries -Increase in goods and services traded -this means more production and, therefore more resources. EG China ‘workshop of the world’ – In many places air pollution masks are needed.

PARAGRAPH 2 -MULTINATIONALS / PROBS WITH GLOBALISATION -YES increase pollution – (this decision taken for simplicity) -Globalisation requires global solutions -these can have drastic consequences if accidents happen -EG BP Gulf of Mexico, oil spill , destroyed the local ecosystem…

Scientists believe that in order to protect the environment, people must use less energy in their daily lives. However, most people have not changed the way they live. Why do you think many people have not taken individual action? What could be done to encourage them to take action?

Ideas for body paragraph 1

Not taken individual action because: – Danger not immediately or directly facing them – Tragedy of the commons – Collective problem – easier to shirk responsibility

Ideas for body paragraph 2

What could be done to encourage them to take action? – Media campaigns by the government – Tax or financial incentives EG In Tokyo ……

Some believe that is the responsibility of people to take care of the environment. Others say it is the government that should take care of the environment. Discuss both views and state your opinion.

Paragraph 1 People should take care of the environment because: We are the consumers, we vote with our wallets, Throw away culture become considerably too prevalent – consumers are causing horrendous damage (Pacific Garbage Patch)

Paragraph 2 The government should take care of the environment because: They have the power to legislate Can impose fines and taxes on polluters Supposed to be guardians of the country, which means collectively they are guardians of the earth… but not true in reality

Conclusion Both should be doing more!

Some people say that protecting the environment is the government’s responsibility. Others believe that every individual should be responsible for it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Ideas for body paragraph 1 – Yes: Government’s responsibility – Policies govt could do, then country-specific example

Ideas for body paragraph 2 – Yes individual responsibility also – Action individuals could take + examples.

Conclusion –  MY OPINION: Such a mess, such a disastrous state, such a shame, so much so that all parties need to step up and take responsibility for the state of affairs we have landed ourselves in.

In many countries, small shops and town centers are going out of business because people tend to drive to the large out-of-town stores. This results in an increase in car use, and it also means that people without cars have limited access to out-of-town stores. Do you think the advantages of such development outweigh its disadvantages?

The advantages of out-of-town shopping centres are very limited… – Slightly cheaper prices – but huge new developments contribute to the urban sprawl of cities… This reduces investment in city centres … which are much more than just places for shopping EG Vienna regularly has art exhibitions in the city centre…

– For example: those without transport are disenfranchised – Traffic on the roads – ALSO (MAIN POINT) -Some might argue they create jobs .. but really it is probably just shifting employment from one area to the other…

Parents want to achieve balance between family and career but only a few manage to achieve it. What do you think is the reason? Discuss possible solutions and provide examples.

Paragraph 1 – The reason for the imbalance The reason is work-life balance, increased competition in the workplace, changes in society, increase in the amount of working mothers puts strain on the family, EG Studies in the US show that families with two full-time parents are more likely to separate. -therefore this shows that finding the balance is incredibly difficult.

Paragraph 2 – Possible Solutions? -Regulations from the government, increasing maternity leave, more flexible working practices, reduced working week, EG France had a 35-hour working week …

Some people believe that employees should stay in the same job for the rest of their lives. Others think they should switch jobs at least once during their career. To what extent do you agree/disagree?

IELTS essay topics, answer,s and ideas: gender issues

Nowadays both men and women spend a lot of money on beauty care. This was not so in the past. What may be the root cause of this behaviour? Discuss the reasons and possible results.

Paragraph 1 -Marketing. Beauty market for women is worth millions, consumer goods companies see similar potential for the male market. Therefore developing new ranges, e.g. Loreal for Men Expert. Therefore main reason is the potential opportunity.

Paragraph 2 -Results? -Difficult to say the results because it is still early, however general trend is in this direction, – Deodorant was considered unnecessary before the 1950s. -Market will probably grow and it will be completely normal in the future.

Some people think that men are naturally more competitive than women. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Paragraph 1 Agree – Men are more competitive Look at sporting fans, globally most are male A lot of sports historically only men participate in F1, Boxing, MMA, etc. Psychological drivers of men include: dominance, control

Paragraph 2 Agree – Men are more competitive Although it is difficult to say without sounding sexist Is it nature or nurture – difficult to say

IELTS essay topics and answer: education (student reward)

Students perform better in school when they are rewarded rather than punished. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

IELTS writing essay structure:

Intro: Paraphrase the question and state your side/argument.

Idea / Paragraph 1: they perform better in schools -definitely better Types of reward – certificate, recognition, positive reinforcement, Studies show children are sensitive and easily influenced when younger, therefore positive environment probably better…

Idea / Paragraph 2: they perform better when punished – works but too harsh for Childhood Possibly does work, but it’s old fashioned, potentially dangerous – could discourage a student for life

Conclusion: Positive better and more modern.

In today’s very competitive world, a worker has to possess multiple skills to succeed. Among the skills that a worker should possess, which skill do you think is more important, social skills or good qualifications? Explain the reasons and provide specific examples to support your answer.

Paragraph idea 1: Social skills are more important – no man is an island – idiomatic expression correctly used i.e in context We need people around us – Lacking social skills could seriously disrupt, demotivate, and damage a team. – a big list of great vocab for Lexical Resource score there.

Paragraph idea 2: Good qualifications, certificates very useful, extremely useful in certain fields such as medicine, but in general, less technical areas, social skills triumph – less common vocabulary “triumph”

Conclusion:

Consider both, but give more weight to sociability.

IELTS essay topics and answer: employment (business)

Do you think businesses should hire employees who will spend their entire lives working for the company? Explain why you agree or disagree. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Paragraph idea 1: Very bad idea to have lifetime permanence- almost zero incentive to improve, Not fair to employees because the company may pledge allegiance to the company but then the company relocates to Asia. Horrible.

Paragraph idea 2: The employee may become a burden for the company. Employees may become a cost that damages the company, lots of companies suffer because of contractual arrangements made in boom times. British Airways is a perfect example of expensive pension contracts made , only for the entire industry to change and render the contracts a massive headache.

Freedom should be given to employees to “ cherry-pick ” their career destiny.

ielts essay topics: cherry pick definition

IELTS essay topics and answer: gender issues (career)

Some people think women should be given equal chances to work and excel in their careers. Others believe that a woman’s role should be limited to taking care of the house and children. Which opinion do you agree with and why? Include specific details and examples to support your choice.

Paragraph idea 1: Women should of course be given equal rights to perform to the best of their ability (good collocation) in the market place Generous provisions and allowances should be made into law to encourage this behaviour and allow females to also fairly take time out from the career ladder to pursue a family.

Paragraph idea 2:  another good reason why I think the first point: Making legal structures to facilitate this transition would not only help to improve the worker’s happiness and wellbeing but also improve the health of society as a whole. Japan has a rather bleak future due to the low fertility rate, perhaps this kind of future could be avoided with more generous legislation.

Conclusion: Definitely should pursue a career and definitely fulfill the traditional family role also. The government should help make both objectives possible.

100 IELTS Essay Topics for IELTS Writing

Let me start by saying that by far the best resource for authentic IELTS essay topics are the Cambridge 1 – 13 books. These are real past IELTS exam papers and, therefore, provide students with the highest quality questions for all parts of the test. However, what do you do if you have finished the Cambridge books? Or you struggle with one particular type of question and want a lot of that specific type of practise?

Well, until now, people have relied on questions that were “memorised” by test-takers(often incorrectly), or written by well-meaning teachers who have no specific education in test creation. As a result, many of the “IELTS questions” on the Internet are worded incorrectly. And, as a professional exam writer ( yes, I work creating academic exams for universities ), I know how damaging it can be if even one word in a question is changed.

So, today I am sharing my list of 100 IELTS writing topics. Some are taken from old exam papers, a few are from the Cambridge books, but most are from my own course .  More importantly, I can guarantee that each of these questions is as “authentic” as a question can be.  Have fun (and let me know your favourite question in the comments!)

IELTS Essay Topics

liz ideas for ielts essay topics

Most people doing IELTS Writing Task 2 get stressed out about which IELTS essay topics they will face. They worry about getting an unfamiliar topic and not having any good ideas or enough vocabulary to complete the task.

This article will help you by giving you the most common IELTS essay topics  and showing you how to use these to get higher scores.

Why is it important to know the IELTS essay topics?

If you are familiar with the most common topics you will have a huge advantage because you will be better at two of the most important things:

  • Thinking of relevant ideas

Idea Generation

Of all the things people worry about when doing Task 2 , not having enough ideas to complete the essay is normally top of the list. However, you should remember that IELTS is not a test of your knowledge, it is a test of your English. The examiners do not expect you to be an expert on the essay topic, they just want you to show that you can write clearly and persuasively in English.

You should also realise that IELTS is a global exam and when the writers of the exam are making the questions, their main concern is writing questions that can be understood by nearly everyone in the world. For example, common IELTS essay topics are education, crime and health. Everyone in the world has an opinion on these everyday topics and you need to understand that the examiners are not looking for the ‘best’ ideas, they are just looking for relevant ideas.

Let’s look at an example question on the topic of international aid:

Rich countries should help poorer countries when they suffer natural disasters. Do you agree?

You don’t have to think of the ‘best’ ideas, you just have to think of two ideas that are relevant to this question. Reasons why rich countries should help are:

  • It is the morally correct thing to do.
  • They have legal obligations under international law.
  • Not helping will result in many deaths and suffering.
  • They have more than enough money to do this.
  • It is in their interests to do so for the peace and security of the world.
  • Some of their own people might be involved in the disaster.
  • Every rich country has a fund for disaster relief within their budget.
  • They might suffer a disaster one day too and need help from the international community.

You obviously do not need to think of this many ideas and some of the ideas are better than others, but the point I am trying to make is that there are lots of ‘relevant’ ideas you could think of.

Despite this, you will obviously be more confident and be able to think of ideas more quickly if you are familiar with the common topics. Below I will show you how you can use the common IELTS essay topics to learn about the general topics and improve your English at the same time.

25% of your marks come from vocabulary and this is directly linked to IELTS essay topics. One of the main ways the examiner will judge your vocabulary is something called ‘topic-specific vocabulary’. The idea is that someone with a wide-ranging vocabulary should be able to talk about any of the common essay topics easily using words that are specific to that topic.

For example, if the question was the same as above, you would be expected to use words like ‘international aid’, ‘wealthy’, ‘developed’, ‘developing’, ‘earthquake’, ‘hurricane’, ‘relief fund’, ‘obligation’, ‘moral’ etc. These are words that you use specifically to talk about the essay topic. You don’t have to use these words, but they would help.

Therefore, the more familiar you are with the topic, the more ‘topic-specific’ vocabulary you will know and the higher your score will be. Knowing the most common IELTS essay topics allows you to focus on the most important vocabulary . Below I will show you the most common topics and some of the more important words you should know.

Are IELTS essay topics predictable?

Yes and no. You will obviously not be able to predict the exact topic that will come up. There are just too many to do this and it would be a very easy test if you knew what the exact topic was going to be.

However, there are between 10 common topics that come up more than others. You should focus on these first, especially if you don’t have much time before the test.

The most common IELTS essay topics are:

  • Environment
  • International Development
  • Globalisation
  • Public Transport
  • Criminal Justice
  • Youth Crime
  • Government Spending
  • Traditional Culture

I think that technology, health, education and the environment are the most important topics and will feature regularly in the future.

How can I use the most common topics?

There are two main ways you can use the most common IELTS essay topics to your advantage. The first is to familiarise yourself with them while practising and improving your English and the second is to focus on topic-specific vocabulary.

Common Topic Familiarisation

If you are going to do well in the IELTS test you need to be using and exposing yourself to English every day. You should be reading, listening, writing and speaking in English as much as possible. You should make sure that if you are listening to or reading something in English you do it within the common topics. For example, you could listen to a podcast on technology one day and then read a newspaper report about education or health the next day. Most of the questions are on current topics, therefore staying up to date with what is happening in the world will really help you think of ideas.

For example, three of the biggest news stories of 2015 were the refugee crisis, terrorism and internet privacy issues. These topics have, unsurprisingly, already appeared on the IELTS writing paper this year.

Please check out my 25 online language learning tools for lots of ways you can study within the common topics at home for free.

If you really want to get advanced, you could also try making up your own questions based on the news of the day and then give these questions to a study partner. This is something that I do with my classes. They go to a popular news site like the BBC and write a Task 2 question based on one of the stories they were reading about and then they give it to a classmate who does the essay for homework.

Vocabulary – Notebook

There are two things you can do here: start a vocabulary notebook and focus on key topic-specific vocabulary.

As mentioned above, you should be listening to and reading English as much as possible before your test. This will not only improve your listening and reading skills but will, more importantly, expand your vocabulary.

When you are reading or listening you will always notice words that you don’t know. Most students simply look these up immediately in the dictionary and then forget about them. I think this is a total waste of time because the words do not stay in your head and you never use them again. A much better thing to do is to start a vocabulary notebook. This is the single most effective way to improve your vocabulary. Follow the steps below:

  • Buy a notebook that you will only use for vocabulary.
  • When you see or hear a new word try to guess the meaning from the context of the sentence or paragraph. This step is very important because it is an essential skill to develop and will help you remember the words.
  • Check the meaning after you have guessed it in the dictionary.
  • Note the new word and the definition in your vocabulary notebook.
  • Pronunciation
  • Review the list of words and test yourself on these words after one week, two weeks, one month and two months. Soon you will have expanded your vocabulary dramatically.

You can also do this by using apps like Memrise  to record and review vocabulary.

Vocabulary- Topic Specific Words

As mentioned above, one of the ways in which the examiner judges your vocabulary is how many topic-specific words you use. Learning these words before the exam for the most common essay topics should help you get a higher vocabulary score.

However, one of the worst things you could do is simply learn a list of words and insert them into your essay. This is not how good vocabulary works and the examiners are trained to spot this. Your focus should always be on accuracy i.e. using words correctly. Because of this I advise my students to use the 100% rule.

You should never use any word or phrase in IELTS essays if you are not 100% sure about it. By 100% I mean that you are sure about its:

  • Collocations

If you are not 100% sure about the things above, then do not use it. If you do, you will probably get it wrong and this will lower your band score.

Ideas for IELTS Essays

Generating ideas for IELTS writing task 2 is often daunting for candidates preparing for the test.

There is a fear that a question will come up that you cannot answer because you know nothing about it. There is also a worry that the questions are geared towards Western orientated topics.

Below you'll get some insight into exactly what the examiner is looking for when they mark your essay so you know what you really need to have in mind when you think of ideas for IELTS writing.

Also you'll get some tips on what you can do to help you come up with ideas for IELTS writing topics.

What ideas for IELTS does the examiner want to see?

liz ideas for ielts essay topics

Many candidates tend to think that the examiner is looking for the best possible ideas that answer the question, and that they will award higher band scores for this.

Actually this is not true. There is nothing in the grading system that the examiner uses that assesses how clever your ideas are or to  knock off points if s/he thinks they are too boring or uninteresting.

What is important is the  relevancy  of the ideas.

This means that they must answer the question that you have been asked. They must also of course be properly explained through further support.

Once you come up with some ideas you should use what you think are the best ones, but the important point about this is that you should not waste so much time at the beginning trying trying to come up with what you think is going to be the best idea to impress the examiner to the point that you have too little time to write a good essay.

With only 40 minutes to plan and write the essay there is not the time to do this. There is no point if you then don't finish the essay or have poor grammar because you are rushing to finish it.

As long as your ideas answer the question and you can explain and justify them, that is fine.

What if the question is not relevant to my country?

Another concern of candidates is that as the exam is written in the UK and Australia, it will be questions related to Western countries and not the country or culture that they come from.

This should not be the case as the writers of the test are aware that most people taking the test are from other countries and cultures.

The questions are designed to be general in nature and based on topics and issues that are relevant to most countries around the world.

If you take a look at the latest IELTS writing topics , you'll see that most are quite general topics that should be relevant to most countries.

Very occasionally a topic may come up that is possibly not as relevant to your country as it may be for some others, but if this is the case you have to think about the fact that examiners are not looking for perfect ideas.

It's how you explain and support them that is key so you have to use the knowledge that you do have.

What strategies can I use to come up with ideas for IELTS?

Next we'll look at some strategies you can use to come up with ideas for IELTS essays.

1. Reading around relevant topics

You can broaden your knowledge of potential ideas for IELTS by reading around the kinds of topics that come up in IELTS.

You should be doing this anyway as you want to  improve your reading skills and also your ability to have knowledge for the speaking test too.

Questions connected in some way to the following topics are fairly common in the exam:

  • Health, Diet and Fitness
  • Globalisation
  • Work and Unemployment
  • Crime, the Law, and Criminal Justice
  • Children and Families
  • Technological Development and Change
  • The Environment
  • Public Transport
  • Advertising

But these are quite broad topics so the questions will be directed to a particular aspect related to these topics. But keeping up-to-date with what is going on in the world by reading international newspapers or magazines will help.

A good way though to find out more about the specific issues related to these broad topics that come up is by looking at old essay questions and sample answers.

To do this, check out our IELTS Sample Essays .

As an example, on this IELTS sample essay page, if you look you'll see a number of essays related to 'Children and Families':

  • Family Size
  • Having Children Later in Life
  • Family Closeness
  • Living Alone

Read the essay but also go into an internet search engine such as google and find some articles on the topic. Search for things such as " reasons for living alone ", " advantages and disadvantages of living alone ".

Remember this is all reading practice, so even if the topic does not come up you are still developing your reading ability and your critical thinking skills, both of which will help you with IELTS.

Note also that there are also topics that will never come up, and these are ones connected to religion, politics and war. So you don't need to research about these.

2. Brainstorming Ideas

Brainstorming and planning is something that is covered in this IELTS writing task 2 lesson:

  • Brainstorming and Planning

Brainstorming is when you write down any ideas that come into your head about a particular question or topic. At first you are not dismissing any, you just write them down however good or bad they seem.

You then select which ones are the best. For an IELTS essay you will usually only need around four ideas to answer a question, as with it being such a short essay, two are usually enough to provide support in one body paragraph.

The important thing to remember again is that you are not getting marked on the ideas themselves (as long as they answer the question) but the way in which you present them in terms of coherency, cohesion and grammar.

3. Ask 'why' questions

Another way to come up with ideas for IELTS writing is to turn the essay question into shorter questions and ask other questions to develop the ideas further.

This is an excellent way to not only develop ideas but also to develop support for you ideas as it helps to focus your thoughts. This can mostly be done by developing ' why? ' questions.

Let look at an example essay question to illustrate this. This is a recent IELTS essay question from

People living in the 21st century generally have better quality of lives than people born in earlier centuries.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

So turn this into some simple questions to focus you on an answer:

Why is life better?

  • People are healthier.

Why are they healthier?

  • Because of more access to medicine.
  • Greater access to cleaner water and safer food.

By thinking like this you can start to come up with ideas and develop them into paragraphs.

You don't really have time though to start writing out all these question. This is just a way to develop or train the way your mind works when you look at an essay question.

So when you next look at a question, try asking yourself 'why?' and may help you start to develop ideas and extent them.

Summing it Up

So these are all potential ways for you to develop ideas for IELTS. Remember as always it's a very personal thing, so do what is most suitable for you.

But the key thing to remember and take away from this is that you are not getting marked on how amazing your ideas are.

Someone who comes up with a boring idea but who explains it well and uses good grammar and organisation is going to get a better score than someone who thinks of a great idea but can't explain it properly or presents it badly.
