The main requirement for a distance learning PhD by Research is to submit and defend the final thesis whose minimum length have to be 90/100 pages. In case the thesis credits are not sufficient, in order to have all the required doctoral credits, additional in-depth reports (about 15-20 pages each) based on textbooks may also be requested. A PhD is often a very popular job requirement in many work areas. Especially in developing countries, with lack of basic job training, the Doctor of Philosophy gets more and more required not only for highly qualified professions, but also for multinationals, non-governmental organizations and private companies’ employments. The Ph.D., however, is the highest educational qualification. Additional notes

(a) Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biotechnology/ Chemistry/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Sciences/ Agriculture as applicable to individual discipline, under the 10+2+3/4 system, are eligible to apply to this program.

(b) The minimum requirement for admission to the Integrated Ph D programme is a FIRST CLASS or equivalent Grade in the Bachelor’s degree (as declared by the University) as indicated against each department.

(c) The minimum requirement of FIRST CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASS CLASS for SC/ST candidates.

(d) Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelor’s or 10+2 levels. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.

(e) Those in the final year of their qualifying examination and awaiting results are also eligible to apply. However, they should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree, including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining.

(f) While the regular PhD program allows an exemption from GATE scores for students with a 4-year degree from a CFTI and with a >= 8.0 CGPA out of 10.0, this is not applicable to Integrated PhD programme.

The short-listing of candidates for in-person(offline) interview is done based on the performance in JAM 2024. Short listing for Physical Sciences is also done based on JEST 2024. The selection of candidates for admission to research programmes is through an interview to be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. To see Important Dates

Selection – For Biological, Physical and Mathematical Sciences selection will be based on the combined performance in the Test and in Interview. For Chemical Sciences, selection will be based only on the performance in the Interview.

Candidates written the following papers in JAM are eligible for the discipline(s) to which they seek admission.

(a) The interview letters for the short-listed candidates will be sent by email and the same is available on the Applicant’s interface after login to the Admission Portal. Such candidates shall make necessary arrangements for attending the interview. No separate communication will be sent by post. TA (second class sleeper class train fare) will be paid to all the SC/ST candidates who attend the in-person interview.

(b) Candidates called for an interview have to make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation etc.

(c) Candidates called for an interview should bring with them attested copies of all the transcripts (marks cards from SSLC or equivalent onwards, degree certificates of the qualifying examination, etc.) and produce them before the interview committee, failing which, they will not be interviewed.

(d) Candidates belonging to the SC/ST category should bring the original caste/tribe certificates, issued by competent authorities for purposes of verification.

(e) If you belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – you must produce the original Income and Asset Certificate issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.

(f) If you belong to OBC-NCL catregory – you must produce the valid OBC-NCL issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority at the time of interview.

(g) Candidate belonging to PwD (person-with-disability), KM (Kashmiri-Migrant) categories should produce the originals of the appropriate certificates, issued as per Government of India rules, and Kashmiri Pandit/Kashmiri Hindu Family living in Kashmiri valley should produce Kashmiri valley domicle certificate.

(h) The offer letter for the selected candidates will be posted on Applicant’s interface on IISc Admission portal under Application Status. You can download the offer letter and make necessary arrangements including payment of fees etc. No separate communication will be sent by post.

(i) The candidates admitted to the Integrated Ph D programmes should report to the Institute for completing admission formalities.

(j) At the time of joining, candidates should have completed all the requirements for the award of the qualifying degree including all examinations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc.

(k) Only candidates who produce all the mark sheets and degree certificates (original or provisional) issued by the University Authority will be given regular admission.

(l) Candidates who are awaiting results but have completed all formalities for the award of a degree should produce at the time of joining, a Course-Completion Certificate, issued by the Head of the institution (The Principal/Registrar). Such candidates will be given only provisional admission, which will be regularized on their producing all the marks sheets and degree certificates (original, or provisional) etc., issued by the University Authority on or before 31 October 2024, failing which, the provisional admission stands cancelled.

(m) Candidates who are given provisional admission are eligible for a scholarship only on regularisation of admission (on production of the required documents). They will be paid a scholarship with retrospective effect, i.e., from the date of joining.

NOTE: The results for some of the recent National Entrance Tests, such as GATE/ JAM etc, may not be available at the time of submitting the IISc admissions application. You must enter the available details of these exams, such as your enrolment/ roll number, paper, etc., in the application, but you may leave the score/rank/results blank. You will have the option to update your national entrance results in the application from the main “Application Status” page. You must make this update within 3 days of the results being declared.

Since the inception of the Doctoral Program for Working Professionals (PhD-WP) in 2019, we aim to nurture and promote multidisciplinary and domain-specific world-leading research for theorists and practitioners. Program Vision

The PhD(WP) Program at IIM Shillong offers intellectually curious working professionals an opportunity to gain advanced research skills to complement their practical knowledge. The program enables professionals to acquire interdisciplinary research expertise on a part-time basis over a period of three to four years. The program will equip professionals to produce high-quality research output of international standards through specialized research training and global collaborations. ; and empowers them to offer practical and sustainable solutions facing businesses and managers. This program will facilitate professionals to pursue varied career avenues such as academia, management consultancy, training, coaching, and research.

The overall experience of the recent immersion program was highly satisfying. Nothing quite matches the energy of in-person meetings. We had the privilege of attending the dynamic pre-conference sessions of iMarC, setting the tone for the immersion program. Professor Weng Marc Lim’s session stood out as a captivating highlight, offering profound insights. Professor Murugan’s SLR classes were instrumental in bringing clarity to complex concepts. Moreover, the opportunity to engage with supervisors and TAC members fostered fruitful idea exchanges. Meetings with the Director, Dean (Academics), and Dean (Research) provided valuable perspectives on the institute’s expectations. The Ph.D. Chairperson’s reassurance of the institute’s high standards left a lasting impression, giving us a clear understanding of what lies ahead.

The immersion program was a very well-crafted program. The Chief Guest of the program, Mr. Lim gave important insights on skills required to write a good paper that I can immediately apply. The ease with which he taught and made everything look so easy gave us a lot of confidence. Important topics were covered and emphasized, deepening my understanding and broadening my perspective. Session on Time Series Analysis and PLS- SEM were also very helpful and gave us enough food for thought.

I would have loved to stay in the Campus close to the professors to have more time for interactions and that is one area which the PhD office can explore for our next immersion. Overall, I would highly recommend this program to any scholar.

Shri Vivek Singh is a public policy and communications professional. He has been serving as OSD (Officer on Special Duty) to the Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister since May 2019. He has been a part of the FM’s team in the last 5 Union Budgets and also worked in the Raksha Mantri’s office from November 2018 to May 2019. He was a corporate banker before joining the government.

He is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), ICAI and IIM Shillong. He is a regular contributor of articles and opinion pieces in leading business dailies where he writes on macro-economy and policy-related topics. While at IIM-Shillong, he was a part of the Student Council and won the Gold Medal for being the Best All-rounder and making the ‘Most Positive Contribution to Campus Life’.

Rohit Joshi  is currently working as a Professor in the Operations Management and Quantitative Techniques area at IIM Shillong. He is a Fulbright fellow. He has obtained his Ph.D from Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He brings with him an extensive leadership experience in building organizations from ground up, business transformation and leading multi-functional teams in medium sized and large organizations across 30+ countries across ME, APAC, Indian Subcontinent & Africa while growing profitable businesses in the global Travel & Transport Industry. He has been instrumental in enabling win-win business outcomes through application of advance technology led IT systems and services to improve the travel experience, safety, security and operational efficiency for his airport, airline, government and other industry stakeholders.

Dr. D P Goyal, Director, IIM Shillong, is an internationally acclaimed academician and researcher. Distance education has become a vital aspect of today’s world of education. It has become the most sought after avenue of raising your salary or increasing your qualification. Various distance courses are available across India in multiple levels such as:

When it comes to completing a course with other obligations in life, distance learning is the best option. PhD by distance education in India can be obtained by applying to colleges that offer distance education Doctor of Philosophy degree.

PhD in Distance Education in India

PhD through distance education is gaining importance among the research scholars who could not pursue higher studies due to work pressure or some other reasons. Many people have the wrong idea that distance education does not involve teachers, and students need not go to schools or colleges. The idea is wrong.

In distance education, a student need not be physically present in the classroom. However, he or she may have to attend daily classes on her laptop or mobile phone at a particular time. These classes are conducted online by experienced teachers or by electronic presentations that are made for a clear understanding of the subjects. In the year 1840, England introduced uniform postage rates across the country. Sir Isaac Pitman, the pioneer of short-hand writing and stenography, took up this opportunity and started sending his courses to his students through mails. His mails contained exercises that were to be mailed back to him so that he could correct them. Thus the foundation of distance learning was laid, and the world was waiting to see a revolution in the field of education.

Later, important universities like the University of London started preaching through a distance correspondence course. The system chartered by the Queen herself had meritorious members coming from less affluent backgrounds to undergo further education and establish themselves in society.

Who Should Opt for PhD Through Distance Education in India?

Distance education has been changing lives for quite some years. Nowadays, even after a hard day of a full-time job, one can enjoy the comfort of his or her home and complete his Ph.D. course. PhD by distance education has broken the normal stereotype and has allowed different candidates coming from different backgrounds to opt for a Doctor of Philosophy, which seemed very far-fetched and difficult earlier.

Moreover, it has been noted that when a man enters his corporate life, he tends to move away from his studies due to workload. For a woman, it is widely seen as soon as she gets married and becomes a housewife; the burden of family life makes it difficult for her to continue her studies.

Noida International University (NIU) is a multidisciplinary, research-driven University. The University invites online/offline applications from the eligible candidates for admission to the doctoral (Ph.D.) Programme as per UGC Minimum Standards and Procedures for Awards of Ph.D. Degree Regulations, 2022, published in the Gazette of India on 7th November, 2022. The Ph.D. programme at NIU is a  full-time programme  and not conducted in distance mode.

• A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non- creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time. Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
• Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.

Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of 3 years , including course work and for a maximum duration of 6 years.

Forms are available on the university website ( www.niu.edu.in ), which can be submitted along with an Online Payment or Demand Draft of Rs. 1122/- .  All applications must be submitted online. The applicant can download a copy of the submitted application form from the application submission portal and furnish a hardcopy of the application form with a photograph and all the documentary evidence in original (testimonials, certificates, publications, work experience, and research/professional experience) at the time of the interview. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

Admission to PhD. Program shall be based on merit obtained in entrance test and interview.

The eligible candidates will be called for an entrance test on the above-notified date and time. Subsequently, a personal interaction with the expert panel will be held to judge the research aptitude of the candidate and also to consider the applicant's proposed research area(s).

Section A  – Research Methodology and Aptitude (Research Aptitude, General Awareness, Logical Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, Numerical Ability, English Language Statistics). {50% weightage}

Section B  – Subject Specific.  (As per UGC/CSIR NET Syllabus)  {50% weightage}

Entrance test  shall be qualifying with qualifying marks of 50%.

The final merit list will be prepared by adding marks obtained in the entrance test (70% out of 100 marks of entrance test) and 30% marks to the interview obtained (as per the latest UGC regulations).

The students who have qualified UGC-NET with JRF / UGC-CSIR-NET with JRF / teacher fellowship holder or any other Government / Foreign research fellowship holder or have passed the M.Phil. Programme (as per UGC Regulations 2009 or amended thereafter) with course work shall be exempted from the entrance test, but they have to appear in the interview.

The interview  will be based on the allotment of marks as per the following criteria:

• Competence for proposed research  - 10 marks
• Feasibility/suitability of plan  - 10 marks
• Novelty of Plan  - 10 marks

Does it help to have an MBA degree before entering the Ph.D. program?

Not really. From the first year itself the student takes Ph.D. level courses alongwith some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Adviser. Hence, a student coming from non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Prgramme in Management Brochure for specific requirements. For example, P&QM area encourages students who have a quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with a background in Psychology may find the work done in the Organizational Behaviour useful.

Application form can be filled-in online. Application fee of Rs. 500/- can be paid through IIMA payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination score card along with the application. What is the purpose of the interview? What is expected at the interview for IIMA? Does it help if I come prepared with a research proposal?

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of specialized area in the programme. It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. Programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

3) Online PhD Program 

Online PhD is still not recognized by the UGC, hence it is not a valid option but you can opt for an alternative which is an Online DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) it is also a doctorate program and can be completed in a minimum of 3-5 years. 4) PhD Distance Learning

  Distance PhDs are also called distance doctoral programs at some institutions. This degree offers the same career prospects as a full-time PhD. The duration is 3-5 years. You need a graduation degree with 5+ years of work experience. 

5) PhD for Working Professionals

• Candidates need an M.E/M.Pharm./MBA/M.Phil or equivalent with at least 60% aggregate for Ph.D. admission.
• Alternatively, those with an M.Sc/B.E or equivalent with a minimum of 60% can also be provisionally admitted.
• For Ph.D. programs in languages and humanities, candidates with an M.Phil/MA and at least 55% aggregate may also be considered.
• Candidates admitted under this scheme must commit full-time to their Ph.D. research and refrain from taking other assignments until the final thesis submission.
• GATE Exam:  The GATE exam opens doors to prestigious Masters and PhD programs. It also offers opportunities for technical positions in PSUs. GATE scores enhance job prospects in both public and private sectors. Especially in fields like engineering, technology, and research.
• AIIMS PhD Entrance Exam: The AIIMS PhD entrance exam is highly competitive. It assesses candidates' knowledge, aptitude, and research skills. The exam is typically held twice a year, in January and July sessions.

Sponsored A student in this category may either be sponsored by a recognized industrial R&D organization, academic institution (universities/colleges), government organization including PSUs and autonomous bodies, reputed industries (as may be recognized by this Institute) or self-sponsored for doing research at the Institute. The Institute will not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Prospective applicants applying under ‘Sponsored Category’ with NOC from their employer w.r.t fulfilling all the required conditions of coursework and minimum required residency may be considered irrespective of the funding arrangement between the candiate and their employer. Such candidates are expected to arrange their own funding for the research activities and sustenance. The minimum residency under this category will be 6 months.

The IBSAT is a remote proctored computer-based test (CBT) featuring multiple-choice questions that evaluate quantitative techniques, data interpretation, data adequacy, vocabulary, analytical reasoning, and reading comprehension. The test duration is 2 hours, consisting of 140 questions divided into four sections. Notably, the test has no negative marking.
