Everyone loves spending time with their friends, it is because we can share everything with them. Most importantly, they never judge us for anything. Similarly, my first friend is my mother. When I knew no one in this world, she was the one I felt the bond with from the moment I opened my eyes. In fact, she is also my first teacher in addition to being a friend. She has always guided me on the right path and promises to do so till the very end.

It’s my mother’s 70 th birthday and I am very glad that you all have made this evening all the more precious for me with your presence.

When my wife asked me to deliver a speech on my Mother, I went speechless for sometime on the thought what all to say about the lady who is nearly God to me. Like God always stands by their children visibly or virtually, my mother has always stood by me in all my decisions ever since I decided to do Fashion designing course at the age of 18. Subtly, I knew, she wanted me to become a Doctor but she compromised on her dreams for my happiness.

Ma, I had never said what I am saying today ‘Please forgive me for breaking your first dream’! I don’t regret my decision; though, today I feel I would have been happier if I had become a Doctor since I would have seen my mother happier. I was a stubborn child who many would not entertain, not even my dad sometimes; but my mother has always loved me the way I am. I remember once I had misbehaved at one of my relatives’ house and the aunty was really upset with me. My mother came back with me; she was hurt deep inside but didn’t utter a word to me about the incident.

Ma, I also never said ‘Sorry’ to you for that incident; today I want to admit that I was wrong and please forgive your obstinate, stubborn and bad-mannered child. Since my childhood, she as compromised on her happiness and would buy everything I demanded and desired. Coming from a middle class family, I slowly started realising that it was not possible for my mother to buy me everything I wished. Still, I wanted to travel to America to complete my Diploma in Fashion Designing.

With so many apprehensions, I had revealed my willingness to you; I in fact, was expecting you to thrash me for that, but you, instead heard me out. I was not sure that day about what was going in your mind and just a week later you asked me to apply for the Visa. You arranged for money and encouraged me to take up the course of my choice. I still wonder how someone could be so considerate, selfless and caring.

The answer is ‘the mother’ can be, and friends, the list of my being selfish is endless! I remember the day I disclosed the news to my mother that I wanted to marry Mira. I still speculate if you had chosen someone else for me; you never revealed it to me though! And for that I would like to say ‘Thank you’ to you, Ma!

Today on the 70 th birthday of my mother, I wish to take more births being only your son and promise to love you in a better way than I love you today. I would be more obedient, more caring and a very good listener.

Well, I rest my speech here; nonetheless, would talk to you Ma, tonight like I do every night. Love you Ma, and thank you friends.

Today, on the occasion of mother’s Day, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Mother’s Day and welcome you to the celebrations!

Our school has been organizing Mother’s Day ever since it was established; but for the first time our respective mothers have been invited to the occasion.

It gives me immense pleasure to welcome all of you and I would like to speak about my mother today.

When I was preparing speech on my mother, I felt that the content belonged to every mother, everyone’s mother. So dear all, I request you to hear me out considering that someone is speaking about your mother too.

You all would agree that ‘Mother’ is the best creation of this world. Someone rightly said, God created mother as he could not be physically present everywhere. I call my mother ‘Ma’; some like to call ‘Mom’, ‘Amma’, ‘Ammi’ ‘Mummi’, ‘Mumma’. No matter, how we address her; mothers’ love for her child is immense and unconditional.

My mother is little special and she is very rich, friends as she would often distribute her love and care amongst my friends too. I wonder sometimes, how neatly she can hide the ocean of love within her heart.

Their souls are very pious. It’s been popularly said that the heaven lies in the feet of mother. I specially love the sound of morning bell rung by my mother in the morning while performing her morning rituals. I remember my mother putting the ‘Red Tilak’ on my forehead ever since I was 4 years old; she might however, be doing it since my birth may be, I don’t remember. My mother says that she has been growing along with me; but all she has developed in the last 14 years is the fear for my safety while I am riding bicycle, when I am on social media, when I am sleeping too late during my exams, when I am not finishing the food she prepares, when I am skipping my dinner just to eat Pizza, Burger, Noodles, etc.

My mother’s anxiety often annoys me; yes, it does and I am sure many of you subtly would agree with me, maybe after this speech. I don’t know, if you had or not but I had many altercations with my mother on her apprehensions. She never said anything to me but cried. Probably, she was not able to prove that her apprehensions had any base.

But friends, today I want to say that mother’s apprehensions are never baseless; it’s only the change in views. They always speak from their experience, especially, in context of their child. Also, since they are the creators of their children, I feel, they have all the more rights to ask them questions; to constantly worry about them and subsequently guide them.

My mother is present today and I would publicly like to say ‘Sorry’ for constantly hurting you; I also promise that I would always listen to you Ma.

Dear Friends!

Thank you for assembling on the celebration of my parents’ 50 th wedding anniversary! While it gives me immense pleasure to welcome you all; it also leaves me wondering and amazed that 50 years of togetherness of my parents and not out!

The credit goes to both my mom and dad; but tonight, I would be biased towards my mom. She has been one lady that has never given up. My father had been in defence and mostly he would be away on duty. While my dad had been serving the country my mother had been serving my grandmother, grandmother and me.

My grandparents were old and my mother would get little support from them. Hence, each and every household chore as well as buying groceries, vegetables, fruits, etc. would be done by my mother. Thanks to the digital world today; my future wife would not need to go out; she would instead be able to order everything online, if I am away on office or business tours. But my mother or any mother for that matter did not have that advantage during those days. I am amazed, at the same time thankful to my mother who not only handled the house skilfully; she also gave me good education and taught me good manners and culture all single-handedly.

I am however, very sure that she got the emotional support constantly from my father and that’s why she could achieve what she achieved in the past 50 years. I look up to my mother as the strongest cord that attached our entire family and relatives together. She has always motivated me to pursue my dreams and has built my strength. She has also been a big motivator for my father as she would not tell the household problems to him and would encourage him to focus on his mission.

My mother is my best friend and I share all my woes, happiness, worries, troubles, success and failure with her and she is the most adamant pillar of our family. She has put all her effort in building my career and has advised me to encounter life and the world with perseverance and self confidence. She has been instrumental in my cracking of the IAS exam.

I still remember, she would be awake the whole night along with me just to ensure that I get my milk, fruits, sprouts, etc. on time. She has not only strengthened my mentally but also physically. I guess, I have scored the marks but she deserves all the medals received by my father and me.

Ma, today on your 50 th wedding anniversary, I would like to say that you have done everything you could for us; today you deserve rest and I would like you take a trip to the world. I have booked your and dad’s tickets for next week. Though we can’t return enough for what you have been doing all these 50 years for all of us. This is a small token of love to dad and you.

I am sure all my friends can very well relate with it and will have a similar story to tell. Isn’t it? Because all mothers are the God’s angles who are given to the children for their nurturing. It is rightly said that God cannot be everywhere so He created the Mother. I cannot imagine my life without my mother, maa you are not just my lifeline but my life and soul.

I exist and live because of you. You are the sole reason behind my survival. You give me strength and positivity to endure the hardships of life. I feel as though I could write a book regarding my mother’s life so I will do my best to make this brief.

My mother was a very sensitive and compassionate person. She loved her family, friends, colleagues, clients and students very deeply.

Sometimes she stuck her nose into things that were none of her business, but I know her motives were never malicious.

I remember the days when we lived on Locust and our whole neighborhood was like family. Mom had an open-door policy whether it was the neighbors walking in for sugar or eggs, or the neighborhood kids coming to her for advice and shelter.

She always loved the children – including her brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews and her grandchildren. And I believe as the oldest she felt the need to take care of everyone though it was not always her responsibility.

I don’t know how she managed to raise a family, return to college and receive a double major and double minor, still cook for us, and show up to all our activities. She exposed us to diverse experiences including sports, the arts, and a world of possibilities.

We were taught strong values and the importance of family, faith, hard work, kindness, tolerance, generosity, forgiveness and love. She was a strong woman, stubborn, gentle but direct and had an amazing sense of humor.

The last three or four years were hard for mom with the return of her breast cancer and the other illnesses she coped with. I know she is at peace now.

Eulogy for Muriel - The Morning Room

We all know Mum, Grandma, Muriel, Mu, Moey in different ways and have our own special memories.

In preparing what to say in this eulogy I remembered a conversation we had about this time last year.

Mum had been to the hospital for one of her appointments and this time she was reunited with a big stack of her medical records going back to the 1960s. The nurses had found the archive of notes fascinating.

Living a full life

But in our chat Mum said she felt really strongly that she didn’t want to be defined by that stack of medical records.

She said to me, “I’ve lived a full life. Next time I go in I want to take some pictures with me to show the nurses that I’ve really lived and what I’ve done over the past fifty years.”

So that’s what I’m going to help Mum show you – through some of my memories about her full life.

Sewing & making things in the morning room

When I think about family time with Mum I think about the Morning Room at home. This is where everything happened and where the sewing machine lived. Mum was brilliant at making things and the sewing machine was a big part of that.

I have to mention the Morning Room curtains. Growing up in the 70's they were regularly changing.

Mum would get a remnant of bright bold material from the market and quickly run up a new pair of curtains. Then after what seemed like just a few months later, she’d do the same again.

It was the same with clothes. Collette and I would show her fashion sketches in Jackie magazine and next day Mum would run up a trendy new gypsy skirt or dress for us on her sewing machine.

In the Morning Room we also made lots of ‘ Blue Peter ’ * style things together - anything from fluffy gonks through to a toy made out of a margarine tub and cotton reels. Mum made family life fun, and she was very creative.

Night classes, sugar craft and teaching

As a teenager I remember going to night school classes together. Mum did flower arranging while I was next door doing woodwork. She loved flowers and for many years she was one of the volunteers on the flower roster doing arrangements in this church, ably supported by Dad.

That brings me to the other thing that used to happen in the Morning Room, cake decorating.

Following the flower arranging classes Mum went on to take lessons in how to make sugar paste flowers. This led to her entering exhibitions with her classmates. Then her friends and family managed to persuade her to share her skills and teach sugar craft and cake making.

I was so proud when Mum did this especially when she told me stories of how she handled some of the cheeky young lads at catering school while teacher training.

I know she was chuffed to bits to be working and she made lots of good friends.

She was very talented in her craft and enjoyed making sugar flowers very much.

I remember the night before Collette and John’s wedding she stayed up all through the night making beautiful delicate sugar paste bluebells for their cake. I scolded her in the morning for not getting any sleep and she simply said, “I don’t care, I’ve enjoyed myself.”

So, I hope you will agree with Mum that she lived a very full life and enjoyed herself, and you will remember her that way, as she wanted you to.

A mother and child connection is so utterly profound. How can the limitations of language ever do this archetypal relationship justice?

It feels almost impossible to put words to the love I feel for my mother, but I will try.

Gratitude for time spent together

I have tremendous gratitude for past five years because I was able to spend time with my mother since she was first diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. We were very open with one another - sharing our feelings; laughter, tears, and, some bickering here and there. The conversations and closure we were able to have were a gift. I will miss her forever.

Beauty, peace and tranquility in death

In my mother’s life there was hardship, but also huge blessings.

My mother's death, as is often the case, was similar to her life as a whole in this way. It was an invaluable experience to have been by her side, along with my family, through her final days and nights.

I am amazed when I recollect the bright, warm, large look in her hazel-colored eyes after she was told she did not have much time left.

You see, as my mother began to pass away, I thought maybe she didn't want to go. For, she was a fighter and her incredible tenacity had showed up in her strong will to live with this terrible disease these last five years.

Yet in her final moments the peace and tranquility that came over my mom’s face was breathtaking.

She was beautiful and as glorious as an angel as she smiled and transitioned out of this world and into the next. For sure she had agreed to pass on. By the ecstatic look on her face I rest knowing mom was greeted by her loved ones who went before her.

Our tight bond despite our differences

My mother Mary was 32 when she gave birth to me. Younger than I am now.

Her own mother died while she was pregnant with me, and I imagine that tragedy must have played a role in our tight bond. I always felt close to my mother. But our relationship was a paradox.

On the surface the way we have lived our lives may seem contrary. However, in spite of traditional and generational differences, our core strengths and beliefs were so congruent; and it was the spirit with which my mother imparted her love that transcended all our differences.

My mother’s core motivating force was LOVE and it was her love that has had a profound impact on the essence of who I am. My mother lives on in my heart.

She gave me the foundation on which my whole life is built. A calling to live a life of service and to help make the world a better place. This is the greatest lesson my mother taught me; how to be caring, affectionate, forgiving, and empathetic towards others, especially those in need.

My mother exemplified service, be it to the elders she visited weekly for years in the nursing home, caring for my beloved Aunt Nonie, or her persistent efforts to meet the needs of her own children and grandchildren. I will always feel love and gratitude for the warm gifts she so beautifully embodied.

My mother, Mary, was a force for spreading good in the world, and her legacy - this compelling force of good continues in the many of us here, whose lives she touched.

My mother always said that we could be whomever we wanted to be.

She was a person you could really depend on and was a constantly supporting her children no matter if they wanted to climb the tallest mountain or build the biggest block tower.

She was our rock, and she is one lady who will be missed by not only her children, but everyone.

Mum was a light in my life as I am sure she was a light in all of yours. She would give anyone the shirt off her back and go out of her way to help a friend in need.

I remember one time when I was little Mum got a phone call late at night from a friend who lived on the other side of the street. She had fought with her husband and was really upset. Mum dressed us and went out in her nightgown with us to go and console her because Dad was working that night. She would always be there for her friends and family.

There are so many memories of my mother that come to mind so it would be next to impossible for me to pick a favorite.

My Mother's legacy

Thank you for being here to celebrate the beautiful life of my beloved mother Karen Siraco.

My name is Michelle. I am the twin sister to Danielle and older sister to Austin. My mother had three children, whom she loved with every ounce of her being. She told us we were her greatest gifts.

My mother was born in Canton, Ohio and was the second child born of the four girls. My grandparents, my mother and three aunts grew up for the most part in New Jersey. She attended Westfield Highschool.

My mother was a wild child to say the least. When she fell pregnant at 21, she was living with our father in Mobile, Alabama and had no idea she was expecting twins until our birth.

My mother did not receive timely prenatal care until she was asked by my grandparents to return to New Jersey so they could help with the baby, and she could go to college. In her final few months of pregnancy she took their advice and moved back.

On July 18, 1980, my mother gave birth to not ONE girl, but TWO! I remember my mom saying she immediately thought, "Dear God, please take one away. Not two babies!"

I know she was only joking and just scared at that moment!

My mother had plenty of help raising my sister and I from her three sisters and her parents throughout our childhood.

My Mom and Dad welcomed a third child, my little brother Austin in 1992. We were 12 years old at the time. (long story) Although we wanted a sister not a brother, we were happy to welcome a sibling into our hectic lives.

Struggles with drug addiction

My mother unfortunately struggled with drug addiction since her early 20's. She was arrested multiple times serving different amounts of time in different jail facilities. She tried drug treatment programs, inpatient rehab, half-way housing, transitional housing, NA meetings and though she struggled with consistent sobriety, she was well known by family and friends as having a genuine heart.

She was very open about her struggles with addiction and recovery.

My mother was not always in my life but she always tried. I understood early on about the disease of addiction and was able to forgive her for her absence in my early childhood years.

I thanked her for the past 7-8 years reminding her that she has been present for me both as a mother and a wonderful GiGi to her grandchildren.

My Mother's qualities

My mother taught me the importance of family, faith, hard work, kindness, forgiveness and love. She was a strong willed woman, stubborn and gentle with a great sense of humor.

She was caring, affectionate, forgiving and empathetic towards others, especially for those in need. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for a few years and was a natural caregiver.

She loved her family and friends deeply and was known for her "gift of gab" and somehow being able to have complete strangers share their life story with her within their very first conversations. She truly had a compassionate heart.

I have tremendous gratitude for that the past year I was able to spend time with her since she was diagnosed with Stage V Small Cell Lung Cancer. She didn't want to die. She wanted to live but accepted death as a part of life.

In her final moments the peace and tranquility that came over my mom's face was breathtaking. She wanted to know her children were going to be ok. I reassured her multiple times as she began to slip away that it was ok to go.

How to Write a Eulogy For Mother

Writing a eulogy for your mother can be emotional and difficult, but it also gives you the opportunity to celebrate her life. Everyone at the funeral or memorial service will most likely be gracious and interested in hearing your stories and reflections. Write a eulogy for your mother by gathering and organizing the information you plan to share and writing out what you want to say.

Organizing the Content

Step 1 Think about the goal of the eulogy.

An obituary is a short announcement of your mother’s passing that appears in the newspaper, while an elegy is a poem or song of lament.
A eulogy is a speech containing a tribute to your mother's life, which may contain a brief story of your mother's life. Make your eulogy tell your own story about your mother rather than cater to what everyone else is telling you to write.

Questions you could ask yourself to help you brainstorm include, What one quality of my mother do I remember most?
Try asking yourself, What is something my mother always used to do to comfort me?
Once you have your list, whittle it down to stories and memories that achieve the goal you have set for the eulogy.

Ask them questions like, What is your favorite memory of my mother?
Another question could be, What life lessons did my mother teach you?

Step 4 Organize the body in the outline.

For example, instead of in order of occurrence, you could group your anecdotes by type: personal memories, others’ memories, her favorite things, her influence on your life, her influence on others’ lives, and concluding with how much she will be missed before giving the conclusion.

Step 5 Have an introduction and conclusion.

For example, you could open with, "Hello everyone, my name is Sam and I am Mary's son. I am honored to be sharing her eulogy with you today."
You could end with, "Thank you for coming to honor my mother today. I know she would be so grateful."

Composing the Eulogy

Focus on writing the way you speak. Simply reading a script to an audience can feel dry and ultra-formal, an effect you may want to avoid.
Try writing your eulogy in a list format, leaving room for improvisation so that you are not constantly looking down at the paper.

Ask relatives and friends to read over or listen to you read your rough drafts to help make the eulogy stronger.

Consider the personality of your mother. Was she vibrant and energetic? Warm and loving? Think about making the tone of your eulogy match your mother’s personality.

You will probably want to exclude negative things. If you were angry with her when she passed, forgiving her before penning the eulogy can help you focus on positive aspects.
Stay away from trivial facts that do not contribute to the main theme of your eulogy, such as her daily habits.

If you tend to be a perfectionist, try to lower your expectations by imagining how you would expect a sibling to do this, or another relative. Treat yourself as you would them (i.e., have compassion for mistakes).

Including Meaningful Extras

Step 1 Share the legacy you believe she left.

Think about if your mother ever told you what she wanted to be remembered for, or ask others if she talked to them about this.
If she never told anyone what she wished to be remembered for, think about the main theme of her life. What did she spend the most time doing? What did she sacrifice the most for? Is there anyone who is grateful to her for a service she performed?
For example, your mother's favorite sayings or life philosophy, or what she said was her proudest achievement.

Achievements can be both tangible and intangible.

Get ideas from your friends and relatives.

Her time is not only spent growing her child, but also educating him and helping him become a productive citizen of this nation. Mothers spend their lives fulfilling the dreams of others by giving up their own dreams. It is through her music that a child and a family can be filled with colors and melody.

The Bible says that God cannot be everywhere, and so he created mothers on Earth. In addition to being a symbol of love, mothers are also fierce warriors. In order for her child to be happy, she must overcome all obstacles. Anyone who has ever been born has been taught by her, had a friend, guide, philosopher, and even had a psychologist.

The word mother is indeed small but the feelings and importance are very big. We can never repay a mother for the sacrifices she makes, and it is impossible to do so in a lifetime. Interestingly, mothers are constant sources of energy and positivity for every child, and we should feel fortunate to be able to count on them as a source of support, forever.

Mother's Day is the time of the year when we celebrate motherhood! We find the most pleasantly surprising way to convey love to the angel of our life. The love of a mother and her existence is so pure that one should admire her every day. Mother's Day does, however, act as a reminder. A mother is the family's pillar and backbone. She proves what true love is all about by sacrificing everything and keeping everyone happy all the time. Without taking a break, she constantly works 24*7 and with a big smile on her face.

For me, my mother is the person who taught me to stand on my feet, she is a person who taught me how to learn from mistakes. She helps me without leaving any hope and without hoping for anything in return. I can leave every luxury to my mother because with my mother I feel more relaxed and peaceful. She used to wake me up during my exams when I was young to help me prepare for my tests well. My mother made endless sacrifices for my success and happiness. She is the Goddess who sacrificed her life, happiness and everything for my life.

Every mother has sacrificed for her child and is undoubtedly still sacrificing and hence, we celebrate mothers day to express our gratitude for her. Let us pray to the Almighty to always keep all mothers happy. I have a great obligation to you to listen to my speech. It was wonderful to speak in front of an audience like this.

I am delighted to present a talk on Mother's Day to all of you here today. It is indeed true that everyone's mother is the first god, philosopher, guide, and friend. The one to hold our hands and teach us to walk. She also teaches us how to communicate. In this constantly changing world, she's the only constant. Her greatness and her accomplishments cannot be adequately described in words.

The international celebration of Mother's Day in 2021 will take place on May 9, which is the second Sunday of the month. Mother's Day is celebrated around the world differently. American celebrate Mother's Day on March 8, whereas Indians celebrate it on the second Sunday of May. The character of a mother has been compared to that of God by some philosophers and preachers throughout history. The purpose of celebrating Mother's Day in many countries is to celebrate motherhood and to honor mothers for their love and affection. It also recognizes the selfless contributions made by mothers to society and the family. During the early 20 th century, Anna Jarvis was instrumental in establishing modern Mother's Day in the United States. Anna Jarvis memorialized her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, in 1908. In 1905, Anna Jarvis began a campaign to commemorate Mother's Day after her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. She was an activist for peace during the American Civil War. Jarvis, the then President of the United States, convinced Woodrow Wilson to make Mother's Day a national holiday in 1914.

Celebrations like this have lost the innate meaning of the holiday and are increasingly commercialized. In fact, it has lost all spiritual significance in favor of economic gain. All countries have a different date for Mother's Day in accordance with their local cultures and beliefs. In Catholic countries, Mother's Day is celebrated as Virgin Mary's Day. Bolivia celebrates Mother's Day every year on May 27 to commemorate the Battle of La Coronilla, which occurred on May 27, 1812.

She acts as the binding material that keeps the family intact and together when you are looking at her. She is a symbol of love. Keeping everyone happy, she is filled with love from her heart. Every great speech should start with a few words of gratitude for the people who have gathered to partake in the celebration with you. You can mix this into a full greeting to welcome guests if you are the first speech on the schedule of events.

Welcome your new son- or daughter-in-law.

Write your thoughts down on paper.

This momentous occasion is probably not the best time to wing it. Whether you use bullet points or an outline, make sure you pen everything you want to tell your daughter in your speech to avoid leaving out anything special. “Start the process informally by simply writing down any and all things you want to make sure to include, from fond memories to advice on love for the newlyweds. As you lay it out on paper, you’ll see that an organic flow may come together quickly,” says Carlson.

Remember to pause and breathe.

If your nerves are starting to get to you, you might start speeding through your speech; to combat this, take a deep breath and remember that it’s alright to take a pause. “Many people forget just how powerful a pause can be. If your nerves are getting to you, take a moment to gather yourself before continuing. Most guests will take this silence as you giving them a moment to fully receive the last bit of sentiment you shared. Center yourself by making eye contact with the bride, breathe, and continue,” says Alkire.

Don't feel pressured to be funny.

The statement supposedly constituted Butker's response to some backlash following his May 11 commencement speech at Kansas' Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school.

In one post on X displayed to over 1 million users, the viral quote meme showing a photo of Butker read, "Everyone is taking what I said out of context. All I said is that we should go back to a better time, like the 50s and 60s. When men were men, and women had more babies than thoughts. When the only 'Me too' movement was one woman saying she was ready for her 4th child, and another woman agreeing." The end of the meme added Butker's name with the words "on setting the record straight."

A fake quote meme claimed Harrison Butker said the words everyone is taking what I said out of context and added all I said is that we should go back to a better time like the 50s and 60s.

A TikTok video promoting the quote meme as genuine also received more than 800,000 views within five hours of being uploaded, making it another one of the more prominent reposts.

However, Butker did not release a statement with these words, nor did he appear to publicly release any statements following his speech. A closer look at the quote meme reveals a watermark for "@TheSportsMemery" — a reference to the Facebook page named The Sports Memery. The Facebook page's description describes its output as containing satire and parody.

The Associated Press reported Butker's speech featured some remarks on the subjects of women and motherhood, Pride month, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and President Joe Biden's policies regarding abortion and the COVID-19 pandemic, among others.

This Mother's Day is the first time in my 66 years of life that I have no mom. She sadly passed away at the age of 91 in February.

I used to feel bad on Mother's Day for friends who had lost theirs . Now I join them. But instead of being sad, I will channel my mother and happily remember her life, art and legacy.

I'm not one for visiting gravesites . I believe in memorializing people by keeping them alive in your heart, memories, actions and thoughts.

I see her everywhere

My mother continues to be with me. I often have conversations with her in my head. I share stories that she'd find funny. Or I tell her about deals I got. We both loved bargains and freebies .

I see my mom everywhere, especially when I look in the mirror. Everyone says I resemble her with my high cheekbones and light-colored eyes.

I have been rummaging through her closets and drawers for items to save to keep her close. There are so many pins and necklaces she made from broken watches and other found objects, including ping-pong balls covered in subway maps that became pop-art beads. Or fun patterned clothing she wore because my dad liked her in bright colors. And purses galore, including a quirky one shaped like a chicken.

She was so original

She was a funky mom, which, as a teenager, often inspired eyeball rolls.

As a self-taught outsider artist, my mother's life was one giant treasure hunt. The walls of her apartment overflow with beautiful objects and her hand-made museum-quality creations. It's like a real-life "I Spy" book.

Inspired by 20th-century artist Joseph Cornell, she collected old ads, broken dolls, game pieces and rusty implements to create shadowboxes. Hers came with clever names, like "Rust in Peace" and "Mona Pizza." One with a collection of tiny doll shoes was called "No No Manolo".

Her credo was "Art speaks with no words." She found beauty in the ordinary and liked to say that you don't look for such objects, "they find you."

Her originality encouraged my sons, who fashioned a "Mr. Love Bug" collage from the innards of a broken radio when they were young. As adults, they collected bottle caps and other interesting detritus on their travels as gifts for a grandma they knew would appreciate it far more than any store-bought souvenir.

My mother was one of a kind. She could talk to billionaire Warren Buffet (and she did) or a taxi driver, with similar gusto.

She was my living thesaurus. If I needed a word for an article I was writing, I'd call and she plucked just the perfect one out of thin air.

She was always thinking of others. If the dessert was a delicious chocolatey treat at a fancy business dinner, she would ask the waiter for a piece to bring home for me. During the pandemic, she got out her phone book and called 100 people in it to see how they were doing.

I haven't found any secret notes to me, but I know how much I was loved. It was there in the hugs she gave me, the sweet caresses of my face even in her last days, telling me I was beautiful.

I joked that she put Pollyanna to shame. She always looked at life from a glass-half-full perspective, perpetually upbeat until recent politics depressed her and we suggested she stop watching so much TV news. In high school, when I left for a date, her parting piece of advice was always: "Sparkle." Something she did daily.

I will miss those little signs of love, her constant creativity and contagious sense of humor. Her greatest joy would be to see me happy and celebrating Mother's Day with my own sons. So, in her honor, I will wear bright colors, be positive and upbeat and always shine.

Social media slams Harrison Butker for 'sexist' commencement speech: 'You kick a silly little ball'

Harrison Butker , a kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, has become one of the internet's most hotly discussed people after a commencement speech he delivered earlier this week went viral for its message rife with rhetoric that has been widely recognized as misogynistic and homophobic.

Butker managed to make enemies of several groups with his 20-minute speech, including but not limited to women and female-presenting people, Swifties, the LGBTQIA+ community, Jewish people , people of certain political parties and people impacted by COVID.

"I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you," Butker said at one point during his speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts institution in Atchison, Kansas. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."

He went on to say that his wife would agree with the assertion that "homemaker" is the most important position for a woman, saying, "I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother."

He also took time to crusade against Joe Biden and the LGBTQIA+ community, disparaging the existence of Pride month and speaking on "dangerous gender ideologies."

"While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique," Butker said. "The bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder."

Multiple petitions have since been created to demand Butker's resignation or dismissal from the league.

"This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time," Butker said, referring to Swift's relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. "Because as my teammate's girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt.'"

Naturally, this did not land well with Switfies, who quickly began using another song to describe him: "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived," a track from Swift's recent album "The Tortured Poets Department. "

The backlash came in two-fold for Butker's insistence on calling Swift his "teammate's girlfriend," considering Swift is an international superstar and Kelce's fame and net worth trail significantly behind her own.

Social media users slams Butker's 'hypocrisy' and 'ignorance'

The irony of Butker's mother being an accomplished physicist with multiple degrees was likewise not lost on the internet. Elizabeth Keller Butker MS, DABR, is a Clinical Medical Physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine.

Between her MS in medical physics from Georgia Institute of Technology and her nearly 40-year career in the field, social media users couldn't help but point out that Keller Butker not only didn't appear to stay home in her kitchen, as her son attested is the primary role of women, but also worked a lucrative career that benefited her son and the family's financial situation greatly.

The people of TikTok quickly took to the platform to start a trend of empowered women sharing their many accomplishments, with some pointing out that their jobs as scientists, doctors, teachers and beyond require more education and know-how than "kicking a ball."

Many set their videos to the song "Labour" by Paris Paloma , a feminist anthem that explores and pushes back at the historical subjugation of women.

One such video posted by user "World.of.grace" shared a slideshow of her accomplishments, including working through nursing school, graduating with the highest honors and becoming a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit.

"But you kick a silly little ball," she says in the penultimate slide before sharing an image of herself in a football uniform with the caption "What, like it's hard?" Beneath the video, she clarifies "I wasn't the kicker, I was the cornerback."

Another TikTok, posted by MIT engineer and space expert Emily Calandrelli, challenged universities to "maybe let women choose your commencement speaker next year," accompanied by a video of herself preparing to deliver a different commencement speech with the caption "there are better options." The post has more than 4 million views and 1 million likes.

Other videos under the sound compared the speech to a scene from "The Handmaid's Tale," warning women, "When a man like this feels comfortable making that speech at a college graduation in 2024, we are in danger, ladies."

"You kick around a football for a living. You and me? We aren't the same" said user @brittany.hoyle after sharing her credentials as an educator. "I won’t stand for disrespect from a man whose job is to kick a ball for triple my salary a year," she said in the caption.

Another woman going by the username @triplediesel hopped on the trend to discuss being raised by a single mother and going on to graduate Cume Laude with a BS in biomedical science while working two jobs, conducting and presenting research at prestigious institutions, and the process of applying to med school.

"You kick a ball for a living," she said on the final slide which featured a picture of Butker. "We are NOT the same."

NFL responds, Chargers take a jab at Butker

The NFL has already made efforts to separate themselves from Butker's comments, though many fans online have expressed distaste for what they feel to be a lackluster response from the league.

"Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity," said Jonathan Beane, the senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer at the NFL, in a statement. "His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger."

Former Kansas City commissioner Justice Horn also took to social media to condemn Butker , saying "Harrison Butker doesn't represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members."

Other teams in the NFL jumped on the opportunity to diss Butker. The Los Angeles Chargers, known for sharing videos that poke fun at rival teams, posted its yearly NFL rollout schedule on Wednesday, a video made using The Sims and featuring digital characters look-alikes resembling teams and players.

The social media team couldn't help but take a jab at Butker, placing his character, complete with red number 7 jersey, in the same kitchen he told women to get back into during his speech.

Singer-songwriter Maren Morris shared a clip of the speech on her Instagram stories soon after the video began to circulate, saying "I choose the bear," a reference to a trend in which women choose between encountering a bear or man in the woods and explain why. (Hint: the trend went extra viral after women began answering "the bear" by and large, opening up a conversation of violence committed against women by men.)

Maria Shriver, author, member of the Kennedy family, former First Lady of California, and the founder of The Women's Alzheimer's Movement, also shot back with a post on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram .

"What point was Harrison Butker really trying to make to women in his graduation speech about their present-day life choices? Did he really want them, aka us, to believe that our lives truly only begin when we lean into the vocation of wife and mother?" Shriver wrote.

"As a woman who has leaned into my vocation of living a meaningful life and working inside and outside the home to not only raise good humans but also raise up our country in various ways, I think it's demeaning to women to imply that their choices outside of wife and motherhood pale in comparison to that of homemaker," she added.

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager of "The Today Show" also ripped the speech, discussing it during a segment and pointing out, "Well, I’m where I am today because I have a husband who leans into his vocation which is being an equal partner, and I tell him that all the time. But also, who is he to tell us?"

Journalist and former sportscaster Lisa Guerrero also posted on X , addressing the NFL directly, saying: “Hey @NFL – If you want to continue to grow your female fan base and any other marginalized group (straight white men are already watching your product), come get your boy."

Even Flava Flav got in on the action, sharing a post on X, formerly Twitter, reading: "Sounds like some players need to stay in their lanes and shouldn’t be giving commencement speeches."

Whoopi Goldberg defends Harrison Butker amid controversial speech

A few prominent names defended Butker, including Whoopi Goldberg who said on talk show "The View" that she "likes it when people say what they need to say."

"He’s at a Catholic college, he’s a staunch Catholic. These are his beliefs and he’s welcome to them. I don’t have to believe them. I don’t have to accept them," the co-host added. "The ladies that were sitting in that audience do not have to accept them."

Some commentators on social media also expressed support for Butker, arguing that he is practicing free speech or saying that he was simply right in his statements.

"Not a word Harrison Butker says here should be remotely controversial. He’s 100% correct," said T.J. Moe , a contributor to the conservative media site "The Blaze," in a post with 8.7k likes and 2.2k reshares. "Those trying to convince women that being assistant VP of lending & intentionally childless at age 40 is more fulfilling than making a family and home are evil."

Chiefs' Harrison Butker blasted for commencement speech encouraging women to be homemakers

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has aggravated one of the internet's biggest culture wars by telling a class of college graduates that one of the “most important” titles a woman can hold is homemaker.

During a commencement speech last weekend at Benedictine College, a Catholic liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, the NFL player railed against abortion, Pride month and Covid-19 lockdown measures.

Drawing the most viral backlash this week, however, was a section of his speech in which he addressed the female graduates specifically — telling them that it’s women who have had “the most diabolical lies” told to them.

“How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world,” Butker said. “But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

The criticisms that followed took aim at Butker as well as the NFL.

"Hey @NFL — If you want to continue to grow your female fan base and any other marginalized group (straight white men are already watching your product), come get your boy," wrote Lisa Guerrero, a former NFL sideline reporter and now an investigative journalist for "Inside Edition."

He went on to tell the graduates that his wife would agree that her life “truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.” It is her embrace of this role, he said, that made his own professional success possible.

Butker’s comments share similarities with some of the more extreme ideas around gender roles that have gained traction in communities that promote “ tradwife ” lifestyles or other relationship dynamics that center on traditional gender roles .

“Listen, there’s nothing wrong with his wife being a homemaker. Homemakers are wonderful, that’s not the point,” filmmaker Michael McWhorter, known by his more than 6 million TikTok followers as TizzyEnt, said in a video response. “The point is he seemed to be acting as if you should be ashamed if you don’t want to be a homemaker, or, ‘I know what you really want to do is just stay home and have babies.’"

The speech was the latest incident to add fuel to the flames of this increasingly vocal cultural battle, much of which is playing out online. While many prominent right-wing men have voiced such beliefs before, they’re usually confined to internet forums, podcasts and other online communities where these ideologies thrive.

A spokesperson for Butker did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Benedictine College and the Kansas City Chiefs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesperson for the NFL told People Magazine that Butker "gave a speech in his personal capacity" and his "views are not those of the NFL as an organization."

"The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger," a spokesperson told the publication.

Butker, who is teammates with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, further drew surprise and criticism when he quoted Kelce’s girlfriend, Taylor Swift, whose monumental career success as a global pop star has inspired college courses .

“As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘familiarity breeds contempt,’” he said, drawing murmurs from the crowd as he used the “Bejeweled” lyric as an analogy for why Catholic priests should not become “overly familiar” with their parishioners.

In the days since his speech, a Change.org petition for the Chiefs to dismiss Butker for “discriminatory remarks” has garnered nearly 19,000 signatures.

“These comments reinforce harmful stereotypes that threaten social progress,” the petition stated. “They create a toxic environment that hinders our collective efforts towards equality, diversity and inclusion in society. It is unacceptable for such a public figure to use their platform to foster harm rather than unity.”

Those who criticized Butker’s speech online include actor Bradley Whitford as well as DJ and rapper (and self-proclaimed Swiftie ) Flavor Flav .

But his speech was also lauded by some on the religious right, including conservative sports media personalities such as Clay Travis and Jason Whitlock , who defended Butker’s statements toward women.

Moe posted on X . “Those trying to convince women that being assistant VP of lending & intentionally childless at age 40 is more fulfilling than making a family and home are evil.”

Sports and culture commentator Jon Root also posted that Butker “exposed the lies that the world has been telling women.” Women, he wrote, are wrongly encouraged to climb the corporate ladder, view children as a “burden” and see marriage as “not worth pursuing.”

Still, a deluge of viewers online took issue with his attitude toward women and the LGBTQ community. Many women also rejected the premise that they would be happier staying at home in lieu of paid work, even if they do have a husband and children.

“I am moved. I actually had no idea that my life began when I met my husband,” neurosurgeon Betsy Grunch, known as Ladyspinedoc on TikTok, said sarcastically in a TikTok video . “It did not begin when I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Georgia with honors. It certainly did not begin when I graduated with a 4.0 GPA, Alpha Omega Alpha, from medical school. And I had no idea that it did not begin when I completed my residency in neurosurgery.”
