It was the month of July when our school decided to take us to see a typical Indian Village. We were all very excited and got on the school bus and were on our way to the village.

As soon as the bus reached the village called Garhi, a crowd of children gathered all around. Apparently. a school bus was not a common sight in the village. They stared at us as we got down from the bus and then started talking to each other pointing with their fingers at the various features of the bus that interested them.

The first thing that struck us was that the village was very different from the city. There were brick houses painted with yellow or blue paint. There were puddles of water here and there where the rainwater had collected. Outside the houses was an open gutter filled with filthy water with mosquitoes floating on it.

The chief of the village came to greet us and to take us around. He first took us to see the temple. We passed through the narrow muddy lanes with scarcely space for two people to walk abreast. The villagers collected on the corner of the street or stood in their doorways to look at us. They were quite surprised to see school children paying them a visit.

The temple was built of brick and stone and was painted white. There was a hall and in strong contrast to the muck outside, was surprisingly clean. The hall was cool and we were amused to see the priest lying on a “Charpoy” with his mouth open. There were three small rooms for the idols of the Gods and Goddesses but these were locked at this time of the day.

We were next taken to see the primary school. The school was a yellow building with five or six rooms. I peeped into one classroom and saw the teacher standing by her desk and the children reciting arithmetic tables in sing-song voices. We were told that the school was up to the fifth standard. The younger children were fairly regular but afterward, the attendance dropped because parents would take them away to work in the fields or to help them at home to mind their younger brothers and sisters while the parents were away at work. We had created quite a disturbance in the school and the teachers and children all stopped their work and gaped at us. So we quickly left and were taken to the fields.

The farmlands offered a lovely sight. There was a cool breeze blowing. The tall green stalks of grain seemed to wave at us. The fields stretched on endlessly till the eye could see. Here and there in the midst of the fields, there were scarecrows with their loose clothes and hats waving in the breeze and frightening away the birds. Farmhouses built of mud and thatched roofs could also be seen. After being told the various method used for irrigating the land, and the dependence of the farmers on the right weather conditions, we were taken to see the community center.

The community center was a big hall where women were taught to stitch clothes and adult education classes were held. These activities were conducted by social workers who visited the village three times a week for this purpose. The chief of the village was very proud of it, for that was one achievement to his credit since he had put in a lot of effort to get it built and move government agencies to send social workers to the village. He said he was now trying to get a dispensary built and again request the government to send qualified doctors to the village. We were all quite impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of this man to uplift his village.

Finally, we went home. We felt sorry for the villagers who were still living in such backward conditions. In spite of the efforts of the social workers, we could see that it would still be a long time before one could be proud of that village.

The name of my village is Fatepur. It is situated in the district of Nadia, about 50 km away from Kolkata. There are about 1000 people live in my village. All the villagers are very cordial and supportive. Most of the villagers are farmers. They grow paddy, jute and vegetables.

There is a primary school , a health care center and a post office in my village. There is a large playground where we play in the afternoon. A pucca road runs through the middle of our village. We get all the necessary things from the village market. People living here are poor but they are very kind and honest. I love my village very much.

I live at Kusumpur, a small village in Burdwan district. The population of the village is around one thousand. Most of them are farmers, few are small traders. Our village has one primary school, a sub-post office and a primary health center.

I have not yet seen a village like my own. Kanthalpara where I live is a small village, calm and quiet, under the green boughs all around. It is far from the madding city. It is located Just on the border of Nadia in the north and 24 Parganas in the south. The Ganga which flows by gently is to the west of the village and Bangaon is to the east.

It is about 6 sq. km. in area and has a population of over five thousand. About sixty persons out of hundred are farmers and live on agriculture and cottage industry. We have a Branch of State Bank. There is also a post office in the locality. It has a famous background for Bankim Chandra Chatterjee as he was born here. Our Public Library has been named after the great author. National Highway 34 runs through our village. Kanthalpara is connected with Kolkata by land and water. There’s so much simplicity and peace in my village. In all respects, this is an ideal village.

Visit to a Village

For the people of the cities and town, village is a very beautiful and rejuvenating place. After living years of hectic and stressful life in the city, everybody needs to take a break to relax and rejuvenate their mind and body. One of the ideal places to relax and unwind is the village. One of my friends lives in a village. Last year, during the puja vacation I visited his village. It is nearly two hours journey from Kolkata. I stayed there with my friend for four days and it was one the best holidays of my life. The name of his village is Madhupur and it is located in the 24 Parganas (North) under Jainagar Police Station. The population of the village is approximately 6,000 only. The morning scene of a village is really an experience to remember. Watching the sunrise is really a memorable experience. Unlike most city folk the villagers get up very early in the morning and start their daily chores. They are really a hardworking lot. I went for a walk in the village in the morning. The scenic beauty of the village road was quite beautiful to watch. There were ponds and green fields alongside the roads. Even the paddy fields on either side of the roads were covered with green crops. I saw the farmers plouging their field. I could feel the cool breeze of the morning as I walked along the road. Little ahead I saw some boys and girls going to school. There are no school bus services in the villages. So the children have to walk to their schools. It was quite eye-catching to see them walk in a straight line to go to school. It was very encouraging to see education fostering even among the village children. While walking down the village road, one can hear different birds singing among the big trees. The sweet voice of the cuckoo was the most enchanting one to hear early in the morning. Night air was another beautiful experience. The moonlight filled up the entire village. Since there were no street lights the moon seemed to shine brightly. For food, I had different preparations all made from garden fresh vegetables. Fish caught from the pond were really very tasty to eat. A village is definitely a beautiful place to go for a vacation. Unlike our city all the people of the village know each other. I really enjoyed my stay in the village with my friend very much.

I once went to a village named Haripur. My grandparents live there, and we had gone to visit them. We first had a long ride by bus. From there we took a tonga to the village. There was no road, only a wide mud path.

I saw some boys and girls studying beneath a shady tree. I was surprised to know that it was the school. I thought of the grand building of my own school back home and realised how lucky I was.

My grandparents welcomed us warmly into their home. They hugged me so often that I thought my bones would break. My grandmother had prepared many tasty dishes for us. Many people from the nearby houses came to see the people from the city. I felt very shy when they touched my clothes and my watch in wonder.

In the evening we went for a walk in the fields. The green mustard plants with their yellow, flowers were growing everywhere. A soft breeze was blowing. I felt I had come to paradise. The dust and noise of the city seemed far away. I shall never forget my visit to my village.

There are so many advantages to living in a village. First of all, I think the food does matter. You will find all the organic and fresh food in a village which is almost impossible in cities. You can buy vegetables from the garden and fish from the fisherman who has caught them. The environment is pretty good, there is no traffic jams or too much pressure.

There are some disadvantages too. I am pretty confused about the medical and treatment system. Because there are not such experienced doctors. That’s the biggest concern for me.

Overall living in a village is pretty awesome for me. Anybody can live there with lots of peace. I know there is a lot of difference in the life of city vs village life, but you will find advantages in the village mostly.

One day while I was going to bed, I overheard my parents’ conversation. I could understand that they were planning a trip to our family friend's place, which is far away from the city. I went to sleep, thrilled about the trip. The next day, after I came back from school, my mom told me about this four-day trip to a village in Murshidabad with my friend Rohan and his family since they had a house in the village.

My parents packed the suitcase with clothes and other essentials. Mom also kept some homemade snacks. We left on Saturday early morning. Rohan and his family had come in that vehicle to pick us up. I could see the sunrise during the journey. It was a beautiful sight. The elders were chatting amongst themselves. Rohan and I were playing video games. Sometimes mom would interrupt to show the lovely view on both sides of the road.

We stopped aside at a roadside stall. We had breakfast; my parents had tea. That experience of having food in a simple stall was different and unique. By 11 am or so, we reached their village home. It was quiet, and there were a lot of trees. A beautiful house to stay in. Some people who knew Rohan’s father greeted all of us. We entered his home. While we were resting some people got us fresh coconut water. I loved to have the coconut flesh too.

We freshened up. A relative of theirs had prepared lunch for us. We sat all down on the floor and had lunch in sal leaf. I loved it. I could hear the moos of the cow, the clucking of the hens, and the bleat of goats. That night I was scared as the rooms were very dark. I held my mom tight and slept.

The next few days, we spent in the paddy fields and vegetable orchards. I used to love feeding the cows, hens, and goats. Often, I would hear various birds chirping in their unique voices. The village had a school and a health centre, as I did see on the way. I had many fruits like mangoes, jackfruit, and berries from their farm.

I was happy as there were a lot of places to play and roam around. I didn’t have to do any homework; I was amidst nature, enjoying everything. Monday night, we packed our bags to return. We were given many fruits and vegetables, too, by Rohan’s father. Tuesday morning, we left for the city. I was sad. However, it was a short yet refreshing trip to the village.

Another prime attraction of a fun fair is different rides and Ferry Wheels. Miniature trains, vehicles, and horses make up the majority of the rides at a fair that are intended for children. The rides are usually painted with bright colours and adorned with lights of different colours to enhance their appearance at night. Apart from the fun activities, a fun fair has various food stalls for the children and their elder companions.

The fair's area is decorated by vibrant tents housing a variety of entertaining events, including magic shows, circus acts, stunts, and movies, among others. There are open booths for games like Throw the Ring, Air Gun Shooting, and dart shooting. Anyone who throws a ring precisely over a far-off item in such a manner that the object lands inside the ring has a chance to win a reward in the game "Throw the Ring." My Visit to a Village Fair

Last year, I went to the Baisakhi fair in my native village. Many people from nearby villages attended the fair. Everyone appeared to be in a festive mood. Their laughter had no bounds and there was a lot that intrigued and attracted me. The locals were dressed in beautiful attire. The kids were ecstatic in every way. All around, people were laughing. The villagers sang traditional songs. I had a good time while dancing to the sound of drums.

There was a lot of excitement and commotion. The marketplace was crammed. Jugglers and rope dancers were present. They entertained the locals by performing feats and tricks. I loved the swings and my favourite were the merry-go-rounds. The fair was a medley of sounds and sights. I came across dance performances and also a wrestling match and a juggler's show. In the evening, there were races and matches. Prizes were awarded to the winners. At nightfall, the crowds began to disperse with armfuls of sweets and toys. I had a great time.
