How WWF is building the next generation’s conservationists through paid internships

By jessica leung .

Jessica Leung is a program manager for Early Talent Diversity Programs at World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The global conservation nonprofit is dedicated to delivering science-based solutions to preserve the diversity and abundance of life on Earth, halt the degradation of the environment and combat the climate crisis. In this blog, Jessica shares how WWF’s new internship program helps elevate underrepresented students into conservation careers.

An array of unique experiences, voices, and perspectives are needed in conservation to generate the most innovative solutions to the planet’s most daunting challenges. As one of the largest global environmental organizations, WWF is seeking to recruit the next generation of conservationists – especially those coming from historically marginalized groups.

WWF’s diversity-focused BRIDGE summer internship—short for Building Relationships, Inclusivity, Diversity, Growth, and Excellence—launched in 2021 to introduce students from underrepresented populations to the conservation field’s numerous career paths.

Our BRIDGE program has three key goals:

  • First, BRIDGE aims to reach historically underrepresented groups, including women, people of color, veterans, and people with disabilities. Following BRIDGE, interns enter WWF’s pipeline for future hires, which helps the organization work toward our goal of at least 30 percent people of color among full-time employees – which we achieved this quarter. We know that this is just a floor and not the ceiling, but our BRIDGE program is critical to our goal to increase representation of staff of color.
  • Second, BRIDGE recognizes the value in the work our interns provide – and we pay them. In 2022, The Green 2.0 Transparency Report Card found that 1 in 5 organizations still did not offer paid internships. Lack of pay can be a major barrier to attracting potential BRIDGE applicants, which is why BRIDGE is a paid internship.
  • Third, in addition to paying interns, WWF engages academic programs reaching BRIDGE populations, in our effort to provide them with information about an inspiring and substantive internship.

In 2022, BRIDGE interns were invited to many professional development and networking opportunities – gaining exposure to conservation career pathways and witnessing how diversity, equity, and inclusion was integrated into WWF. This included a career panel discussion with WWF’s early career-focused employee resource group, speed mentoring, and sessions on managing mental health.

Another session was devoted to WWF’s President and CEO, Carter Roberts, connecting with interns to offer reflections and ask them for their feedback. “Listening to Carter speak was very insightful, and the Q&A session allowed the interns to ask about things that they wanted to learn more about,” said Ashley Pratt-Gallo, a summer 2022 intern on the People and Culture team. “The opportunity to answer questions posed by Carter was very interesting, and giving feedback about our experience and perceptions of WWF was greatly appreciated.”

wwf thesis internship

Internships are an opportunity for an early career individual to experience what a future career path in an industry could look like. Upon graduation, internships can often be a competitive edge for candidates seeking full-time entry level positions.

Francesca Edralin, a summer 2021 BRIDGE intern turned full-time WWF employee, was inspired to pursue a conservation career after witnessing the gaping inequities in how climate change was affecting marginalized communities.

“Growing up, while visiting family in the Philippines, I noticed a big disparity with the climate crisis,” says Edralin. During these trips, Edralin spoke with locals about the impacts they faced: severe drought, rising sea levels, and increased typhoon risks. “After returning to the US, though, I felt like a lot of people were in a bubble. It made me care about climate justice and spreading awareness, especially through an international lens.”

To sustain BRIDGE for future underrepresented students seeking to grow a conservation career, WWF is creating an endowment that will guarantee long-term support for interns by providing more than 40 undergraduate and graduate students annually with a fully paid 10-week internship. Income from the endowment will cover interns’ salaries and other essential costs. Funding will ensure the program can continue to provide opportunities for future cohorts and diversify the sector over time.

Graduate unemployment in South Africa grows at an unprecedented rate each year. New graduates, many with Honours and Masters degrees, struggle to find jobs for reasons cited as their lack of foundational workplace skills. Internships support the transition of new graduates into the workplace and aid the development of foundational skills on which to build their careers.

South Africa’s transition to a green economy needs creative and innovative leaders to tackle the complex and interrelated socio-economic and ecological issues and risks facing us today. Across disciplines, graduates come from universities with new and novel ideas of how to respond to the increasing socio-ecological crises we are all caught up in. Law graduates are looking for new ways to ensure environmental rights are not violated. Urban Planners are looking for new ways to design cities for low carbon transport. Economists are trying to better value natural resources, and determine costs and impacts of environmental neglect. These graduates need both the workplace and opportunity to explore some of these new ideas in a real work environment, while at the same time building the foundations of their future careers and increasing their employability.

WWF’s Graduate Internships provide a practical and paid bridging experience for new graduates to gain valuable experience and workplace-based training, and connect into professional networks to establish their careers for the environment.

Every two years, WWF recruits a new cohort of Honours and Masters graduates into a structured and mentored 12-18 month internship programme. In addressing skills in high demand, internship positions range from traditional green occupations, like the Park Ranger and Ecologist to emerging areas of specialisation such as the Environmental Economist, Environmental Engineer and the green Architect. Applicants are selected for their specialism, coupled with an expressed commitment to and passion for the environment. Interns are placed with a host organisation and assigned a dedicated and trained mentor. Training workshops help interns to explore and develop workplace-based competences, such as ethics, relationships and communications in the workplace, employee rights and responsibilities, learning through feedback from performance appraisals and finding their next job.

Jumping in Pringle Bay

From conservation partners to big corporates such as Spar and Nedbank, WWF works with a diverse range of host organisations. WWF also works closely with all universities in South Africa to promote internship opportunities.

The programme responds to both environmental and social policy imperatives in South Africa. Responding to increasing youth employment, it also supports new graduates from multi-disciplines to develop the skills to respond to social and ecological challenges in an interrelated way, for example, sustainable agriculture for increased food security or water stewardship to create green jobs.   The first seven interns in 2011 were placed with WWF. The second intake of eight interns, included the first placement of an intern with a partner organisation. Seven years later the programme has recruited 50 interns who are placed with 17 partners.

1. The Graduate Internship Programme has a 90% success rate of interns transitioning from the internship into full-time employment. 2. The programme contributes to transforming the workforce for the environment with 66% females and 85% black South Africans supported through the programme. 3. WWF is proud to engage with 80% of South Africa’s universities, to ensure diversity of new entrants working for the environment into the future. 4. From an initial 7 interns in 2011 to 50 interns from 2017, a total of 177 interns have completed the internship and gone on to meaningfully contribute to environmental leadership in South Africa. 5. 42 committed partners have supported the hosting and mentoring of interns to support the career development journey of young graduates.

What’s the difference between an intern and a volunteer?

An internship is something that you choose to do specifically to develop your skills in a chosen area. A volunteer opportunity can also produce this, but your goal is largely to help the cause.

Internships are also a step closer to working as an employee for an organisation than a volunteer. Interns are often full-time for a fixed-term employment period – e.g. 3-6 months – embedded within a defined role, longer-term than a volunteer role, and may be paid.

How can Conservation Internships help your career?

Conservation internships are a great way to get on the job training and develop key skills in your chosen area. We encourage people to use them to fill key gaps in their experience for their target roles.

For example, if you’re working towards being a Communications Officer but have a lack social media experience, embedding yourself with a conservation organisation’s communications team as an intern could be the ideal way to develop your skills, accumulate great experience, grow your network of contacts within your chosen area of work and to test drive the job.

If it’s close to what you want to be doing it should also be lots of fun!

How much can you earn as a Conservation intern?

Although many roles are no-fee/unpaid, we have identified below a number of paid conservation internships which become available each year.

These are often set at national minimum or living wage (£7.83 – £9.75 per hour) or an annual wage of £13,500 to £18,000.

For Conservation Internships where no wage is provided, employers often support their interns with subsidised living arrangements.

How to apply for a Conservation Internship?

Internships – especially the paid ones – can be very competitive.

For example, the Michael Hearn Internship with Save the Rhino received 299 applications in 2013..! Kindly, they shared the results of their shortlisting process, and provide some practical advice which all conservation job seekers can learn from. We encourage you to read them here .

To make your application stand out from the crowd it’s very important to plan ahead and ensure you craft your very best application possible.

A good way to do this is to check out our FREE eBook ‘How to Apply for a Conservation Job’ This is a complete guide to producing successful CVs, Resumes and Application Forms by the experts at Conservation Careers.  Download your copy for free here to craft your perfect conservation internship application.

The organisation provides hands-on training in conservation, sustainability, and environmental education for young adults, with the goal of fostering the next generation of environmental and cultural stewards. This approach has led to the creation of hundreds of internships and service-learning opportunities which blend vocational training and green leadership development to support more than 100 partner sites across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region.

Each year, Kupu offers hundreds of service opportunities that create positive environmental, cultural and community impact across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region. Given that each programme is distinct in its focus and duration, you can check out the various program descriptions to find the best fit for you.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Internships

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

Location | Panama

Theme | Science & Research

Summary | The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) was founded with the purpose of increasing and sharing knowledge about the past, present and future of tropical ecosystems and their relevance to human welfare. This work began in Panama in 1910, when the Smithsonian led one of the world’s first major environmental impact studies, which surveyed and catalogued the flora and fauna of the lowland tropical forests that would be flooded with the creation of the Panama Canal. A century later, the Smithsonian in Panama is a standard-setting global platform for groundbreaking research on tropical forests and marine ecosystems and their astounding biodiversity.

Internships provide the opportunity to meet and work with scientists from around the world, gain hands-on experience in academia and research, and delve into Panama’s rich ecosystems and culture.
Internships generally involve specific roles within Smithsonian research projects but also encourage interns to bring new ideas and questions to the table. Smithsonian Internships often have a profound impact on young academics at early career stages, and can lead to new research projects at the Smithsonian in Panama.

Internships are intended for undergraduates, recent graduates, and Master’s students. Interns are selected based on merit and potential for achievement. However, placement depends upon finding a match between the applicant’s interest and a suitable research project overseen by a STRI scientist or research associate. STRI encourages applicants to directly contact potential supervisors. You can find staff research profiles and contact information here  and a list of research affiliates is  on this document starting at page 244 .

STRI Internships | Individual applicants will be selected to conduct research under the supervision of scientist at STRI. Interns will work closely with their research mentor, becoming an integral participant in the scientist’s larger research agenda. Additionally, interns will be encouraged to reflect on the conceptual and research implications of the work at hand so that they may maximize their understanding of a particular subject area.

STRI-SENACYT Internships | Panama’s sciences and technology secretariat provides internships to Panamanian students at local universities (undergraduates, recent graduates, and Master’s students) so they can work alongside STRI staff scientists. This program is designed to enhance intellectual development and give students real world experience working along side professionals at STRI.
