How to rotate a page in canva (step by step).

how to make a canva presentation portrait

There’s nothing worse than spending time on a design only to realize that you need your design in a different orientation. The good news is it’s easy to learn how to rotate a page in Canva.

Unfortunately, the feature mentioned in the first section is only accessible to Canva Pro users, but I’ll show you a workaround to rotate pages as a Canva Free user at the end of this post.

How To Rotate A Page In Canva Pro

Step 1: click the resize & magic switch button.

To start this process, click the Resize and Magic Switch button in the top left corner of your screen. You need to have a Canva Pro account to access this feature. Then, you can either use the Resize section to select a preset size to change the page to, or you can select Custom Size .

Step 2: Switch The Width And The Height Of The Design

To orientate your canvas correctly, you need to swap the Width and Height of your design. Doing this will “flip” the canvas to how you need it and change the orientation.

Inside the Custom Size Panel, you will see the current dimensions of your project. From here, switch the Width number and the Height number around to flip the orientation of the page.

Step 3: Select Copy & Resize

Now that the dimensions have been flipped, you can resize the document. First, click on Continue at the bottom of the panel. Then, you have two resize options once you see the preview.

  • Copy & Resize – This option will duplicate your document in a separate tab and then resize it. This option is great for retaining your original document to use as a reference.
  • Resize – This option will resize your original document. Doing this will replace your original document. I don’t recommend this option for rotating your canvas, as you will no longer have the original design if you want to go back.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Once you select an option, the page will rotate, but in most cases, you will be left with a canvas with a ton of space on the left and right or top and bottom of the image.

Step 4: Reconstruct The Page To Fit The New Dimensions

The next few steps involve moving around all of your elements. To make this easier, add a new page below your design by clicking the Add New Page button above the canvas.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Then, drag and drop all the elements from your first page to the second page of the design. Use your original design as a reference. You can crop or resize images if needed or add new photos to Canva to fill up space.

Once you have the basic layout of your elements in place, you might notice areas of blank space. To keep your design aesthetically pleasing, duplicate one of the nearby elements and fill the space with it. You can also add a text box to add more elements to the page.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

A quick warning when it comes to moving around images: If you used a frame in your design or chose a template that features a photo frame , and you want to move the layout of the images, you must detach each image from the frame to place the pictures in a new composition on your canvas.

To do this, right-click on one of the images, then choose Detach Image from the sub-menu. You can now move the images around your new design. Use the rest of the elements in your original design to fill out the design.

How To Rotate A Page In Canva Free

Rotating a page in Canva Free is possible, but a different method is used. You will need to copy the elements to a new design with the correct dimensions. To do this, click Create A Design on the Canva Homepage. Then, select Custom Size at the bottom of the menu.

Note: I compare all the differences between the pro and free versions of Canva here if you’d like to learn more.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

First, ensure the correct unit is represented in the drop-down menu to the right of the measurement boxes. Next, insert the opposite Width and Height values of your original design. Then, click Create New Design to open the canvas in a new tab.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

From here, you can copy all the elements from the original design by selecting them all and pressing Control + C (Win) or Command + C (Mac) . Then, paste them onto the new canvas using Control + V (Win) or Command + V (Mac) and reorder them into the new design. It’s a bit more work, but is definitely still possible.

So, although it’s always best to get your page orientation right when you first create a design, it is possible to rotate any page in Canva. Just remember to choose the Copy & Resize option if you are a Canva Pro user so you don’t lose your work from the original project!

How to Rotate a Page in Canva to Landscape or Vertical

November 8, 2020 Rent My Words Canva , Canva Tutorials

how to make a canva presentation portrait

A quick question and answer today, just because I see this being asked a lot, and finding (or not) finding the answer can be frustrated because there isn’t a simple “click of the button” solution.

In a nutshell, to rotate in Canva, you’ll have to change the dimensions of your design. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it sounds, so stick with me.

The only tiny hurdle is, you need to have a Canva Pro membership in order to do so. But, you can grab a free trial here for 30 days if needed. I also like to mention that Fiverr and Upwork are great design resources if you have a project you’d just like to hand off to someone else like a freelancer who can complete it for you.

How to Rotate a Page in Canva to Landscape

To rotate a page in Canva to landscape view:

  • Click “resize” towards the top left of the screen.
  • Then, swap the currently listed width and height dimensions. Meaning, if you have an 8.5×11 canvas, you’ll make the width 11 inches and the height 8 inches.
  • Last, click “resize” to resize your current design, or, click “copy and resize” to keep your original as is while creating a new design with the new dimensions.

As you can see, you must resize your design completely. Meaning, there isn’t a way to click a button and flip your canvas into a landscape orientation or into a vertical orientation.

Here is an example—let’s say I had this vertical, standard 8.5×11 eBook that I wanted to “rotate” to a landscape orientation.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

I’d go up to “resize” and enter 11 for the width (inches) and then 8.5 for the height. Of course, you can use any dimensions you’d like, and Canva also provides a number of sized options for you to transform designs into presentations, social media graphics, and more.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

After doing so, I’d be left with the output below. As you can see, you’d need to clean things up a little in order to get your previously perfectly-fitting elements stacked up the way you’d like in the new landscape orientatio,

The easiest way I’ve found of doing so is to just select all and then drag it all together to make larger. Some elements, like the binding in this case need to be moved to the left edge, etc.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

After a quick minute of rearranging, I’m left with the product below. Depending on the amount of elements you have, this step is could be a breeze or could require a bit of tinkering.

Meaning, if it was just a photo and a headline, it would be pretty easy, but a full page out of an eBook might take some time.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Same thing to rotate to A4 or other pre-set dimensions. Just go to “resize” and then search for the type of document you need. In this case, if I search “A4” I’ll see these options.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Don’t let the “cm” throw you off—once selected, you can toggle to inches and see the A4 dimensions of 8.268×11.693.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

All in all, rotating a page in Canva isn’t as easy as you might be used to doing in other programs, but I’m sure there is good reason for it.

My thinking is, you’re typically creating with a specific goal in mind with Canva. So, while having the option to flip my vertical eBook to be more landscape, Canva is guessing that you’re doing so in order to turn it into a presentation or a social media graphic, etc., so why not provide that option of choosing the output upfront.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or need any additional help!

Or, just pay $5 or so for someone on Fiverr (or find someone on Upwork ) to create whatever it is you need for you. I’ve definitely swallowed my pride a few times and just hired a freelancer on Fiverr for quick turnaround, and often receiving something better than I could have done myself.

How to Change the Page Orientation on Canva

Avatar photo

In order to change the orientation of the canvas, a user must have access to the Canva Pro subscription that will give them access to the Resize feature on the platform. Users can also manually change this by navigating back to the home screen and starting a new canvas with reversed dimensions.

Hi there! My name is Kerry, a graphic designer and digital artist who loves sharing all the tips and tricks for Canva so that anyone can start using it! Sometimes, even when it comes to seemingly simple tasks, navigating new platforms can be a bit confusing, so I am here to assist!

In this post, I’ll explain the steps to change the orientation of your canvas on the Canva platform. This is a feature that is useful if you want to duplicate or use your creation for multiple venues that require different dimensions.

Are you ready to get started and learn how to change the orientation of your project? Wonderful- let’s go!

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

Changing the orientation of your design on canva, how to change the orientation from portrait to landscape in canva, how to change the orientation without canva pro, final thoughts.

  • While you can change the orientation in Canva by resizing the dimensions, there is no button to simply change the orientation of your project on the platform.
  • The “resize” feature that will help you change the orientation of your project is a feature that is only accessible to Canva Pro and Premium feature users.
  • You can manually change the orientation of your canvas by navigating back to the home screen and switching the dimensions in a create your own canvas option.

When it comes to designing, the orientation of your project really is based on what you are using it for.

Presentations will normally be in landscape while flyers often are presented in portrait mode. (And just as a reminder, the landscape is a horizontal orientation and the portrait is a vertical orientation.)

Unfortunately, Canva does not have a button where creators can just switch between the two different orientations. However, there are ways to work around this and still be able to create your designs based on your needs!

It is important to note that this method of changing the orientation of your project is only available to those who are paying for a Premium Canva subscription. (Looking at you – Canva Pro and Canva for Teams users!)

The default setting for a new project is the portrait (vertical) setting, so for the sake of this tutorial we are going to assume that you started on a canvas that has a portrait orientation. Sound good? Great!

Follow these steps to learn how to change to orientation to landscape (horizontal):

Step 1: Open up a preexisting or new canvas project to being creating your project.

Step 2: If you have a Canva Pro subscription and want to rotate your page to landscape view, find the button at the top of the platform that says Resize . It will be found next to the File button.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Step 3: When you click on the Resize button, you will see that there are options to change your project’s size to various preset dimensions (including preset options such as social media posts, logos, presentations, and more).

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Step 4: There is a “custom size” button that displays the current dimensions of your project. To change it to landscape, switch the current width and height dimensions. (An example of this would be if the canvas is 18 x24 inches, you would switch it to 24 x 18 inches.)

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Step 5: At the bottom of the menu, click on Resize to change your canvas. There is also another option to copy and resize, which would make a copy canvas with the new dimensions and keep your original one the way that it started.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

If you don’t have a subscription that allows you to dive into the premium Canva options, don’t worry! You can still change the orientation of your projects, but it will take a little more effort to bring all of your designs back into the resized canvas.

Follow these steps to learn how to change to orientation without a subscription account:

Step 1: Look at the dimensions of the canvas that you want to change the orientation of. If you created a specific set of dimensions for your project, it will be located underneath the project name on the home screen.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

The dimensions for any project that was created using preset format options can be found by searching for the name of the design in the search bar and hovering over it.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Step 2: Go back to the home screen and click on the option to Create a Design. When you select this option, a dropdown menu will appear that has preset options but also a spot to include specific dimensions.

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Step 3: Click on the button that is labeled Custom size and you will be able to type in the desired height and width of your project. You also have the ability to change the measurement labels (inches, pixels, centimeters, or millimeters).

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Step 4 : Once you finish typing in the reverse dimensions of your original canvas, click Create new design and your new canvas will pop up!

how to make a canva presentation portrait

In order to transfer any elements that you had previously created on the original canvas to your new canvas, you will have to go back and forth to copy and paste each piece. You may have to readjust the size of the elements to fit the new dimensions of your project.

It is interesting that there isn’t a button that automatically generates a canvas in either landscape or portrait orientation, but at least there are ways to navigate how to do it! Knowing how to work around this feature allows more people to be able to customize projects even further!

In this tutorial, you get to learn how to change orientation in Canva. Let’s dive in!

Steps To Change Orientation In Canva Pro

The best way to switch between portrait and landscape orientation of your canvas on Canva is to first click on the Magic Switch button and select Custom Size .

Then, click inside either the Width or Height box and select the orientation you want in the drop-down options below.

This is for Canva Pro users only. I also show you how you can change orientation in Canva if you are using the free version.

For step-by-step details, here’s how you can change your design’s orientation on this popular online graphic design tool that is part of Magic Studio :

Step 1: Magic Switch

Start by launching your desired project on Canva’s home page. Whether it’s a new design or an existing design file, Canva makes it a simple process to change dimensions.

In this example, I would like to change the landscape design of the featured image used in this blog post to a portrait mode. I can then use this portrait design for social media graphics.

On the editor page of the current design, click the Magic Switch button on Canva’s toolbar at the top of the page. This feature is one of the handy Canva hacks that make design orientation changes a breeze.

In the Magic Switch button’s dropdown menu, navigate to the Browse By Category section, and select Custom Size . This allows you to input custom dimensions for a tailored design orientation.

In this example, I’ve selected the Copy & Resize button to keep the original version.

Step 3: Adjust and Save

Another drop-down will let you know that the orientation change is completed and you can click the Open button to see the new design.

Now with the new orientation applied, you can reposition your design elements to fit the new layout. Whether you need to adjust the positioning of your graphic, text box, or any other design elements, everything can be moved and resized to fit the new orientation.

Once satisfied with the new orientation and layout, save your design. Canva provides various export options, such as PNG, JPEG, and PDF for web and print use.

You can also change the orientation of your canvas on Canva for free by starting a new Canva design size or a new orientation of your project. Then copy and paste your design from the previous canvas to the new page.

From there, you can adjust and rotate images and elements to fit your new Canva page orientation.

Go through the following steps on how to do that if you don’t have a Canva Pro subscription:

Step 1: Open A New Blank Canvas

With the original Canva design, leave it open in Canva. Then, go to the Canva home page and click on the Custom Size button on the top right-hand corner just below the menu bar.

You will see a drop-down menu appear with empty boxes. Type in the Width and Height values of your new orientation in the boxes.

You will see your design and all elements you’ve copied appear in the new canvas with the new orientation.

Most likely you will have to adjust your elements or even rotate images with the rotate handle.

If your original design happened to have a background color or image, that will not be included in the new canvas.

You will have to go back to the original design to take another step of copying the background separately. Then, do the same thing of returning to the new canvas to paste it in.

Canva is a popular graphic design tool that allows users to create stunning visuals for various purposes. One of the most crucial aspects of design is orientation, which determines the layout and structure of the design. Fortunately, Canva offers a simple and effective way to adjust design orientation to meet your specific needs.

Whether you’re designing a poster, flyer, or social media post, changing the design orientation can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of your design. With Canva’s intuitive interface, you can easily adjust the orientation of your design with just a few clicks. In this article, we’ll show you how to adjust Canva design orientation, so you can create stunning designs that meet your specific needs.

Understanding Canva Design Orientation

When creating a design on Canva, it’s important to understand the concept of design orientation. Orientation refers to the direction of the design canvas, either portrait or landscape. The orientation of a design is determined by the ratio of its width to its height.

Portrait Orientation

In portrait orientation, the height of the design is greater than its width. This orientation is commonly used for designs that are meant to be viewed vertically, such as posters, flyers, and business cards.

To set a design to portrait orientation on Canva, simply switch the values of the height and width in the Custom size section of the Resize menu. You can also select a pre-defined size that has a portrait orientation.

Landscape Orientation

In landscape orientation, the width of the design is greater than its height. This orientation is commonly used for designs that are meant to be viewed horizontally, such as banners, social media graphics, and website headers.

To set a design to landscape orientation on Canva, switch the values of the height and width in the Custom size section of the Resize menu. You can also select a pre-defined size that has a landscape orientation.

It’s important to choose the right orientation for your design based on its intended use. For example, a banner that is meant to be displayed horizontally should be created in landscape orientation. On the other hand, a business card that is meant to be held vertically should be created in portrait orientation.

Adjusting Canva Design Orientation

Step 1: selecting the design.

Before you can adjust the orientation of your Canva design, you need to select the design you want to work on. You can either choose an existing design from your Canva homepage or create a new one from scratch.

How to Adjust Canva Design Orientation

Once you have selected your design, click on the “Resize” button located at the top of the editor. This will bring up the “Custom size” section where you can see the current dimensions of your design.

Step 2: Changing the Orientation

To change the orientation of your design, you need to switch the values of the height and width in the “Custom size” section. For example, if your design is currently in landscape orientation, you can switch to portrait orientation by swapping the values of the height and width.

Once you have made the necessary changes, click on the “Resize” button to apply the new orientation to your design. You can now proceed to edit your design in the new orientation.

How to Adjust Canva Design Orientation

It is important to note that changing the orientation of your design may affect the layout and placement of your design elements. You may need to adjust the position and size of your design elements to ensure that they fit properly in the new orientation.

Tips for Adjusting Canva Design Orientation

When it comes to designing in Canva, adjusting the orientation of your design is an important step to get right. Here are some tips to help you adjust the orientation of your Canva design:

Tip 1: Consider the Purpose of Your Design

Before adjusting the orientation of your design, consider the purpose of your design. Is it a poster, a social media graphic, or a business card? Different designs require different orientations. For example, a poster may look better in landscape orientation, while a business card may look better in portrait orientation. Understanding the purpose of your design will help you choose the right orientation.

Tip 2: Check Your Design Elements

When adjusting the orientation of your design, it’s important to check your design elements. Some design elements may not look as good in a different orientation. For example, if you have text in your design, it may be difficult to read if you switch from portrait to landscape orientation. Similarly, if you have an image in your design, it may not fit as well in a different orientation. Checking your design elements will help you make sure that they look good in the new orientation.

Adjusting the orientation of your Canva design is a simple and straightforward process. With just a few clicks, you can switch between landscape and portrait mode to suit your needs. Whether you’re creating a social media post, a flyer, or a presentation slide, Canva’s resizing feature makes it easy to adjust your design’s orientation to fit your content.

How to Rotate Canva Slide

how to make a canva presentation portrait

Canva is a popular graphic design platform that makes it easy for anyone to create beautiful slides, social media graphics, posters, and more. One useful but sometimes overlooked feature is the ability to rotate your Canva slides and designs.

Rotating a Canva slide allows you to switch between landscape and portrait orientations or create unique angled designs. This opens up more creative possibilities for your presentations, flyers, posters, and other projects.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk through multiple methods to rotate entire Canva slides as well as individual elements like images, text boxes, and shapes.

Why Rotate Canva Slides?

Here are some of the most common reasons you may want to rotate a Canva slide or elements within a slide:

  • Switch between landscape and portrait slide orientations
  • Fit more content on a slide by using a wider landscape layout
  • Create visually interesting angled elements like slanted images or text
  • Make text and images curve along a circular Canva slide template
  • Rotate objects like shapes and icons for more dynamic slide designs
  • Flip items horizontally or vertically to create mirror images

The ability to rotate slides and objects gives you more flexibility and creativity in your Canva designs. Keep reading to learn how to unlock the full potential of this useful feature.

How to Rotate Entire Canva Slides

Rotating an entire Canva slide to switch between portrait and landscape orientations is simple with the “Resize” tool. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough:

  • Open your Canva presentation and select the slide you want to rotate
  • Click the “Resize” button at the top of the editor window
  • In the dimensions fields, swap the width and height numbers
  • For landscape, make the width larger than the height
  • For portrait, make the height larger than the width
  • Click the blue “Resize” button and Canva will rotate your slide

All the elements on your slide will automatically adjust to fit the new orientation without being distorted or resized. It’s that easy!

This method works for switching any Canva template or custom-sized design between landscape and portrait layouts.

Rotating Single Elements in Canva

Beyond entire slides, you can also rotate individual elements like text boxes, shapes, and images in Canva. Here are the steps:

  • Select the object or text box you want to rotate

A picture of strength, dignity and courage: Tatler commissions British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor to honour the Princess of Wales for its third annual cover portrait

THE FUTURE QUEEN: A NEW PORTRAIT OF THE PRINCESS OF WALES BY ARTIST HANNAH UZOR, COMMISSIONED FOR TATLER ’S JULY 2024 COVER

To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in 2022, Tatler commissioned a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by a Commonwealth artist for the July front cover. The portrait, by Nigerian artist Oluwole Omofemi, was followed in July 2023 by Trinidadian artist Sarah Knights’s portrait of the newly crowned King Charles III. Together, they sowed the germ of an idea, which has recently borne fruit as a new artists’ residency. The Akoje Residency was announced earlier this year, founded by rugby star Maro Itoje and his business partner Khalil Akar in collaboration with the King’s Foundation, for African, Caribbean and diasporic artists to spend time at Dumfries House in Scotland to focus on their artistic practice. In tandem with this exciting development, Tatler is delighted to commission a third portrait in the series . What better way to show our support than to choose as a subject our much-loved and highly respected Princess of Wales – and who better to paint her than fellow mother-of-three, British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor?

TATLER HERALDED A NEW ROYAL ERA WITH A HISTORIC PORTRAIT OF KING CHARLES III ON THE COVER OF THE JULY 2023 ISSUE

Uzor first shot to prominence in 2020 when she undertook a wide-reaching project using portraits to highlight historical figures of the African diaspora who had played a part in English history and the complex relationships they had with Victorian society. Her striking portrait of Sara Forbes Bonetta came to the attention of English Heritage and became the catalyst for their major initiative Painting Our Past. Inspired by Uzor’s work, the charity went on to commission five other portraits from five other artists, an achievement of which Uzor is rightly very proud. ‘Sara’s story is very important because it helps to bring the complete story of our history and to question some of our own prejudices,’ she says.

I talk to Uzor as her first solo show is opening at the Niru Ratnam gallery in Fitzrovia. She recently finished an MA at the Slade School of Fine Art, where, in 2021, she won the inaugural Milein Cosman Scholarship for Drawing. She has been given just three weeks to complete the Tatler commission but is unfazed by the challenge. ‘I work quickly,’ she says. ‘Once I start painting, it will only take me two or three days.’

UZOR, PICTURED AT HER HOME IN ST ALBANS WHERE SHE HAS BEEN WORKING FROM A SPARE ROOM SINCE WELCOMING HER SON, GABRIEL, THREE MONTHS AGO

She tells me that her practice is driven by her interest in history, particularly diasporic culture and its manifestation in personal and public memory. The act of researching and observation is just as important to her in building a picture of the sitter as the research material she discovers. Each body of work is centred on a particular research focus, drawing from a variety of references, including archival images, historical paintings, family photographs and literature.

For this commission, she predicts that she will spend a lot more time preparing and researching than actually painting. There is a lot of material to cover – there are more than 189,000 pictures of the Princess of Wales in the Getty Images archive, she tells me. But she doesn’t seem daunted and intends to look at as many photos as she possibly can before basing the final work on a composite image.

‘When you can’t meet the sitter in person, you have to look at everything you can find and piece together the subtle human moments revealed in different photographs: do they have a particular way of standing or holding their head or hands? Do they have a recurrent gesture?’ Has the recent video released by the Princess of Wales’s household, in which she explains her cancer diagnosis, given Uzor a new perspective? ‘Without a doubt,’ she replies. ‘All my portraits are made up of layers of a personality, constructed from everything I can find about them.’ The video has added another layer to Uzor’s reading of the princess, showing ‘a moment of dealing with something difficult, speaking from the heart, having the courage to tackle it head-on’.

MEETING THE MONARCH: UZOR WITH KING CHARLES III IN JANUARY 2023 DURING HIS TOUR OF THE AFRICA CENTRE, A SOUTH LONDON-BASED CHARITY

Uzor places a lot of emphasis on how both the visible and invisible parts of a character can be revealed through a painting. She works with acrylics and will start with the background, which she will paint in a colour wash. For the Princess of Wales, she already has a colour in mind: ‘A green-blue, which I chose based on her eye colour and also trying to get elements of being in a garden and on water – rowing being one of her [favourite] sports and in some pictures.’

The next step will be the figure, which she will construct from elements pulled together from the countless photographs she has used for inspiration. The important thing for her in any portrait is to convey the layers of the subject’s personality – in this case, more specifically to capture the dichotomy between the public persona and the private. Uzor expresses huge admiration for the Princess of Wales: ‘She has really risen up to her role – she was born for this. She carries herself with such dignity, elegance and grace.’

‘I CAN’T QUITE REMEMBER WHEN I PAINTED MY FIRST PORTRAIT', UZOR PICTURED IN HER STUDIO AT HER HOME

Uzor’s palpable confidence comes from a lifetime of expressing herself through art. From as early as she can recall, she would record her memories through drawing. Her father remembers how, when she was a very young child, they went on a road trip together and when they got home, she painted the whole journey in detail. ‘I think a lot of my work has to do with evoking a memory,’ she says, ‘the spectator looking in at a moment in time.’

She was born Hannah Hasiciimbwe in Lusaka, Zambia, in 1982, but came to England with her parents as a baby and lived here until the age of two, ‘so I started walking and talking in England’. The family returned to Zambia, where Uzor spent her formative school years. She remembers constantly doodling and finds it difficult now to pinpoint exactly when she painted her first portrait: ‘I can’t quite remember because I have been painting for so long. It was probably during my teenage years and probably a portrait of one of my siblings, as I was always painting them.’

A BRUSH WITH THE PAST: UZOR WITH HER 2022 PORTRAIT OF SARA FORBES BONETTA, GODDAUGHTER OF QUEEN VICTORIA. THE PAINTING WENT ON DISPLAY AT THE QUEEN’S FORMER SUMMER RESIDENCE, OSBORNE HOUSE ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT

As she progressed in high school, it became apparent that her father was counting on her to ‘do something sensible’, so she put her art to one side and returned to the UK to study for a BA in computer studies, going on to work in business development and digital marketing. For her creative outlet, she turned to music, and it was during this time that she met and married her husband, Peter, through their church, where she sang and he played the guitar. Peter is a software developer, but Uzor also describes him as ‘a creative in music’ and music clearly plays an important part in their home life. Their two eldest children, Nathan, 11, and Rinnah, seven, both sing and play piano; Nathan is also a drummer.

Uzor’s mother died in 2016, which was a life-changing moment for her. It prompted her to return to her real passion: painting. She enrolled at Kensington and Chelsea College (now Morley College), where she was the winner of the 2021 Higher Education Award. She doesn’t regret her years in the corporate sector at all; in fact, she attributes much of the way she approaches a project to the discipline required in her former working life. ‘It taught me to respect deadlines,’ she explains.

She is clearly exceptionally capable and organised. As we speak, she keeps her three-month-old baby, Gabriel, occupied on her lap throughout our conversation. ‘My studio was previously in central London, but since Gabriel, I have painted at home,’ she says. The wall behind her is covered in pink and green sticky notes – not randomly stuck on a board, but arranged in a regular grid – on which she has written exactly what she is going to do and when. Knowing my own approach to lists – to write them endlessly and then ignore them – I ask her whether she follows these instructions. ‘Absolutely,’ she says. ‘I would be lost without them. At the moment, I try to work mostly at night, when the children are asleep, and do my best to keep family time on Saturdays.’

When I ask about her artistic influences, she cites Toulouse Lautrec ‘because he both paints and draws’, as does she. I can see the same sense of balance in her work, the subject often sitting off-centre against a complementary background. She also admires Gauguin for colour and Cézanne for construction; and her contemporary art heroes include Kerry James Marshall, Barbara Walker and Yinka Shonibare, all of whom she admires for the importance of history to their work.

What she doesn’t mention, but what strikes me as I am talking to this articulate, confident yet unassuming artist, is how many qualities she seems to share with her subject. Both have three young children whose importance to them ranks more highly than anything else. ‘I sense with her the joy of motherhood,’ Uzor says. Yet both women appear to juggle family life and high-achieving professional roles with a skill that belies this complexity. Uzor dismisses it simply as ‘passion – if you believe in it enough, you will make it work’.
