How to present a PDF.

You have a few options for presenting your PDF slideshow. PDF presentation mode is available on most PDF editing software but not necessarily in a PDF viewer. You can also, of course, convert your PDF to a PowerPoint presentation. The simplest way to present your PDF is to share your screen or project the view of your PDF from a free PDF viewer. Option 1: Use PDF presentation mode.

If you use PDF presentation mode, you won’t have to convert your PDF and worry about formatting issues. You will also have preference options as you learn how to put a PDF in presentation mode. Follow these steps:

• Open your PDF in Adobe Acrobat .
• Select File > Preferences > Full Screen View to select options for your presentation.
• Select View > Full Screen.

The options will allow you to decide things like whether you will time your slides and which transitions you want between slides. You can also use a similar process with Preview on your Apple device.

How to present a PDF document

With Adobe Acrobat online services, it’s fast and easy to convert PDFs into PowerPoint presentations. Simply follow these three steps:

• Navigate to Acrobat online services and launch the Convert PDF to PowerPoint tool.
• Drag and drop your PDF file into the converter or click Select A File to locate it.
• Download your presentation once the converter has finished.

You can now open the slideshow as you would any ordinary PowerPoint presentation. And as a bonus, you can edit the text, images, and formatting directly in PowerPoint.

Option 3: Present a PDF using a PDF reader window.

The easiest way to include a PDF file in your presentation is simply by using your PDF reader . Most video call applications let you share your screen and display the PDF to others. If you’re at an in-person meeting, you can also project the PDF reader onto a screen.

To share your screen with your PDF reader in a call, you’ll need to follow these steps:

• Open your PDF in your PDF reader, and leave it open.
• Begin your video call.
• Select the screen-sharing option.
• Select the PDF reader as the screen you’d like to share.

Although letting others see your PDF reader may be easy, it isn’t always the most optimal way to give a presentation. It can be slow to scroll through the pages of the PDF file — plus, depending on the orientation, you may also not be able to display an entire page while keeping text at a legible size.

One limitation of PDF presentation mode is that it doesn’t support videos.

Can I see my notes in PDF presentation mode?

While putting your PDF in full-screen presentation mode shows your slides neatly, it doesn’t show your presenter notes separately on your personal device. If you need to have notes on hand, you can always print them out or give yourself concise notes as reminders on the slides themselves. How To Present a PDF Like a PowerPoint

You can present a PDF as if it were a PowerPoint presentation in two ways. You can either open a PDF and view the content in full screen or save the file as a PowerPoint. How To Present a PDF Like a PowerPoint Presentation

Defining initial view as Full Screen mode

Full Screen mode is a property that you can set for PDFs used for presentations. In Full Screen mode, PDF pages fill the entire screen, and the Acrobat menu bar, toolbar, and window controls are hidden. You can also set other opening views, so that your documents or collections of documents open to a consistent view. In either case, you can add page transitions to enhance the visual effect as the viewer pages through the document.

To control how you navigate a PDF (for example, advancing pages automatically), use the options in the Full Screen panel of the Preferences dialog box. These preferences are specific to a system—not a PDF document—and affect all PDFs that you open on that system. Therefore, if you set up your presentation on a system you control, you can control these preferences.

Define an initial view

When a user opens your PDF document or PDF Portfolio , they see the initial view of the PDF. You can set the initial view to the magnification level, page, and page layout that you want. If your PDF is a presentation, you can set the initial view to Full Screen mode. In Acrobat Pro you can create Action Wizards to change default settings for multiple documents.

After you define the initial view of the PDF, you can add page transitions to selected pages or the entire document.

Acrobat supports page transitions and bullet fly-ins from PowerPoint.

Define the initial view

• Choose File > Properties.
• In the Document Properties dialog box, click Initial View.

Select the options that you want, and then select OK. Save and reopen the file to see the effects.

Define the initial view as Full Screen mode

When setting the initial view of a PDF to Full Screen mode, you must define how the document opens.

• Choose File > Properties.
• In the Document Properties dialog box, select Initial View.

Choose Page Only from the Navigation Tab menu.

Choose Single Page from the Page Layout menu.

Set Open To Page to the page on which you want to start the presentation.

Users can exit Full Screen mode by pressing Esc if their preferences are set this way. However, in Full Screen mode, users cannot apply commands and select tools unless they know the keyboard shortcuts. You may want to set up page actions in the document to provide this functionality.

Initial View options for document properties

The Initial View options in the Document Properties are organized into three areas: Layout And Magnification , Window Options, and User Interface Options .

Layout And Magnification

Determines the appearance of the document.

Two conditions can affect page layout and magnification. 1) Someone has already set an individual PDF to a different initial view in File > Properties. 2) You have the option Restore Last View Settings When Reopening Documents selected in Edit > Preferences > Document category.

Navigation Tab

Determines which panels are displayed in the navigation pane.

Page Layout

Determines how document pages are arranged.

Magnification

Sets the zoom level for the document after it's opened. Default uses the magnification set by the user.

Open To Page

Specifies the page that appears when the document opens.

Setting Default for the Magnification and Page Layout options uses the individual users’ settings in the Page Display preferences.

Window Options

Determine how the window adjusts in the screen area when a user opens the document. These options apply to the document window itself in relationship to the screen area of the user’s monitor.

Resize Window To Initial Page

Adjusts the document window to fit snugly around the opening page, according to the options that you selected under Document Options.

Center Window On Screen

Positions the window in the center of the screen area.

Open In Full Screen Mode

Maximizes the document window and displays the document without the menu bar, toolbar, or window controls.

Show File Name

Shows the filename in the title bar of the window.

Show Document Title

Shows the document title in the title bar of the window. The document title is obtained from the Description panel of the Document Properties dialog box.

User Interface Options

Determine which parts of the interface—the menu bar, the toolbars, and the window controls—are hidden.

 If you hide the menu bar and toolbars, users cannot apply commands and select tools unless they know the keyboard shortcuts. You may want to set up page actions that temporarily hide interface controls while the page is in view. (See Add actions with page thumbnails .)

Add page transitions

You can create an interesting effect that occurs each time a page advances by using page transitions.

You can also set page transitions for a group of documents using the Actions wizard in Acrobat Pro .

Choose Tools > Organize Pages > More > Page Transitions.

In the Set Transitions dialog, choose a transition effect from the Transition menu. These transition effects are the same as effects set in the Full Screen preferences.

• Choose the direction in which the transition effect occurs. Available options depend on the transition.
• Choose the speed of the transition effect.
• Select Auto Flip, and enter the number of seconds between automatic page turning. If you do not select this option, the user turns pages using keyboard commands or the mouse.

Select the Page Range that you want to apply transitions to.

If users select Ignore All Transitions in the Full Screen preferences, they do not see the page transitions.

How to Present a PDF like a PowerPoint

With Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can present a regular PDF in similar fashion to a PowerPoint presentation.

Format presentation

• Under the "Edit" tab, click "Preferences".
• Under the "Full Screen Navigation" Section, you can loop the presentation by checking the "Loop after last page" option.
• You can also set the "speed" of the presentation with the "Advance every [ ] seconds" option.
• It is recommended to leave the "Escape key exits" option checked in order to quit the presentation early.

Present PDF

• How to View PDF in Full-Screen Mode? (Step by Step)

Are you looking for a way to view your PDF file in full screen on PDF reader to enhance the readability, but not sure how to do it? Here you will learn four different ways to open PDF in full screen. This is a step-by-step guide to view PDF in full screen mode just like how PowerPoint presentations are presented.

Part 1. Open PDF in Full Screen Via UPDF

To view PDF in full screen using UPDF, follow these simple steps:

Step-1. Open your PDF file using UPDF

If you have been using another PDF reader, you may need to right click on the PDF and select " Open with UPDF " option. Otherwise, open the UPDF app and then open the PDF  document through ' File ' tab, just like you do with any other office document.

Step-2. Select Slide show

Once your PDF is open, you are in the " Reader " mode and you will find many options on the top.

Click on the far right option " Slide Show ". This will open the PDF file in a separate window in full screen mode.

Also, when you keep the cursor on the slide show tab, a submenu will open with 2 options viz. " Play from the Start " and " Play from the Current Slide ". Picking the first option will start the slide show from the beginning of the file or page one. Picking the second option will start the slide show from the current page.

There is a panel of options, at the bottom left corner. There is a " < " and a " > " icon, which are used to move the pages up and down respectively with the mouse. Also, the pages can be moved up and down with the arrow keys on your keyboard.

The far left " Edit " option has some annotation tools and laser pointer. If you click on the laser pointer option, two more options will pop up on the top of the panel. The red dot pointer option will change the appearance of the cursor to a red pointer.

The other option which looks like a tick mark will allow the pointer to draw a line on the screen when you drag the mouse.

Also, the annotation tools have a pen option with different colors and an eraser to erase any edits drawn on the page.

And if you are the one presenting, you can go to the presenter view. To pick this option, right click anywhere on the screen, click on " Use Presenter View ". Switching between these 2 options can also be done by clicking on the view icon on the top right corner.

To exit the full screen slide show, press " Esc " key.

Part 2. Read PDF in Full Screen Via Adobe Acrobat

If you have been using Adobe Acrobat reader, you may not even know that you can actually view PDF in full screen mode, like many of us. Adobe Acrobat also offers the option to view full screen PDF. Here are a few simple steps to do that:

Step-1. Open file with Adobe Acrobat

Open the PDF document with Adobe Acrobat. If you have been using another PDF reader, you may want to right click on the PDF and select " Open with Adobe Acrobat " option.

Step-2. Open full screen mode

Click on the " Menu " tab on the top left corner. From the menu option, click on " View " which will open a submenu. From this submenu, click on " Full Screen Mode ". Once you click on this option, your file will open in full screen mode.

To close the full screen mode, press " Esc " key.

Part 3. View PDF in Full Screen Via Google Chrome

If you do not use any PDF reader installed, do not worry, you can still view PDF full screen on Windows 10 or other versions on your computer using google Chrome. You may already have Google Chrome on your computer, or you can download it. Here is a step-by-step guide to view PDF in full screen using Google Chrome:

Step-1. Open file with Google chrome

If you have been using another PDF reader, you may want to right click on the PDF and select " Open with Google Chrome " option.

Click on the icon with three dots (more actions) towards the right of the window. This will open a drop down menu with " Present " option. If you click on this option, your file will open in full screen mode.

 To close the full screen mode, press "Esc" key.

Part 4. View PDF in Full Screen Via Microsoft Edge

If you do not have Google Chrome, you can use Microsoft Edge to read as well as view full screen PDF. It is similar to how Google Chrome works. Here are the simple steps to follow:

Step-1. Open file with Microsoft Edge

If you have been using another PDF reader, you may want to right click on the PDF and select " Open with Microsoft Edge " option.

On the tool bar, towards the right side, there is a double sided arrow tab. If you click on this tab, your file will open in full screen mode.

Adobe Acrobat enables you to view a PDF document in full screen view. The full screen view is useful when you are reading an online document or making a presentation using a PDF document. In the full screen view only the pages of the document are displayed with items such as the window controls, toolbars, the title bar, the status bar, and the menu bar hidden. You can also set various preferences for the full screen view such as automatically advancing a page after a specified time duration thereby creating a slide show effect.

Things You Should Know

• Go to View > Full Screen View . You can also use the shortcut Ctrl + L in Acrobat. [1] X Research source
• To set your preferences to always choose full screen view, go to Edit > Preferences > Full Screen .

How to enable the better PDF Viewer in Google Chrome

Google Chrome may be used to display PDF documents; the feature is included natively in the web browser, which means that it does not require third-party tools or extensions to function.

PDF viewing functionality is basic and while that is fine for going through a PDF document, it lacks when it comes to everything else.

Google has been working on an update for the integrated PDF Viewer, and it has been overdue, considering that web browsers such as Firefox provide a much better experience when it comes to viewing PDFs in the browser.

Right now, Chrome users may use the viewer to zoom in and out, print the document, and change its orientation. Compared to Firefox, which has a table of contents, automatic zooming, or quick jump functionality, it is lacking.

The Chrome PDF viewer update will change that. It is currently available behind a flag in all recent versions of the web browser, including Chrome Stable. The update introduces a table of content, two-page view option, quick jump support, and more.

Enable Chrome's new PDF Viewer

• Load chrome://flags/ in the browser's address bar. Alternatively, load chrome://flags/#pdf-viewer-update directly and skip the second step.
• Search for PDF Viewer.
• The PDF Viewer Update description: When enabled, the PDF viewer will display an updated UI with new options and features.
• It is available for all desktop versions of Google Chrome.
• Restart Google Chrome.

The new PDF viewer is active immediately in the Chrome web browser. You will notice the difference right away thanks to the new table of contents sidebar that it displays when it is activated.

A click on the menu icon on the right side of the toolbar displays the new "two page view" option that you may activate to display two sheets side by side.

Chrome Canary users may enable PDF Viewer Presentation Mode furthermore to unlock a full screen PDF viewing mode. Just use the shortcut F11 in the PDF viewer in Google Chrome to toggle the feature.

Full mode hides the browser UI when it is activated.

Use the pdf.js extension on the chrome webstore, or create your own extension using the PDF.js code (hosted by mozilla) on github.

The typical PDF being viewed by most is short and has no ToC. Generally, the less the viewer does, the more purpose-driven it is (lighter, quicker… good things). Larger and longer PDFs usually get downloaded for later viewing, typically not in the browser. I mostly see no need for more features in the browser’s built-in viewer.

The free version of Above Reader DC has more features and is faster than any of the viewers that are offered by the browser makers!

I no longer support Adobe after forcing their creative cloud bloated garbage. They also banning legit countries, dropping support for Windows 7 so quickly, claiming using old versions of their software will you get sued. Terrible company. I wish Adobe will be gone in a few years and Macromedia came back.

I genuinely hope that he was joking when he said “web browsers such as Firefox provide a much better experience when it comes to viewing PDFs in the browser.” I guess you don’t have much credibility to lose when you don’t know how to spell the word “overdue,” however. Firefox has had the worst .PDF viewer in the business for a long time, and I’m pretty sure that it hasn’t been updated or improved in any way in close to ten years now.

What’s this about “credibility” and misspelling a word? Martin is a native German speaker (hence the occasional typos), and good spelling is not a criterion for IT expertise anyway.

Firefox used to have a pretty crummy PDF viewer, but over the last couple of years it’s been improved significantly in terms of compatibility and functionality. You can’t just assume if you haven’t actually tried it in the last “ten years”…

F11 works to hide the browser interface for those w/out canary :-) (this applies to Brave too)

In fact, there’s nothing in the current new, updated Chrome PDF Viewer which wasn’t available in the old one. I don’t understand this article.

I continue to be pleased with the free version of Foxit Reader. Browsers are trying to be everything to everyone; I call it bloat.

I think that Edge Chromium’s PDF reader is by now the best one, amazing good speed, stability, speech with non errors, multiple printable options and more. EdgeC is better than Chrome imho. ;]

Edge is a data gathering tool for Microsoft, much like Windows 10. That already totally disqualifies it for anyone who cares one iota…

And Google Chrome isn’t the same, just for a different company? Your response is pointless unless you point to an alternative that avoids this while providing the desired functionality.

Small addition: Even though Brave is currently my primary browser, if one needs Chromium and the privacy between the user and the parent company of the browser is of concern, Vivaldi, Ungoogled Chromium, or Bromite would be equally valid picks. :)

Chrome is about as bad, Edge takes it a step further by assigning a hardware identifier which enables Microsoft to link the gathered data to you even across installatione, not even Google Chrome does that:

Browsers that do not spy on you: Vivaldi, Ungoogled Chromium, Brave, Bromite.

Happy now? I don’t know if there PDF reader is the same as the one in Edge, but a PDF reader in a browser which would be worse than any standalone PDF reader anyway, hardly just jusifies feeding the Microsoft kraken even more than you have to. In my opinion, people should avoid that if possible, but in the end, as the old saying goes: Use whatever you want.

And Chrome doesn’t collect data? What kind of world do you live in?

Perhaps you should not only think of data-collecting browsers like Chrome, Edge, Opera… What about Vivaldi, Brave, Ungoogled Chromium etc.?

Chrome is not the only alternative to Edge even though you seem to think that.

Firefox includes a built-in PDF viewer to display PDF files inside the browser window. This article explains how to use the built-in PDF viewer, how to fix the common issues you might encounter, and how to use another PDF viewer.

Use Firefox’s built-in PDF Viewer

Firefox's built-in PDF viewer allows you to view almost all PDF files found on the web without an external application (exceptions to this are PDF files with a MIME type incorrectly set). The built-in viewer is used when Portable Document Format (PDF) files are set to Open in Firefox in your Firefox settings for different types of files . This is the default setting. When you click a link to a PDF file or open it from the Firefox Downloads panel , it will be rendered with the built-in PDF viewer. (To learn more about the built-in viewer, see below.)

The built-in PDF viewer will open the PDF file in Firefox without saving it.

Fill out forms in PDF Viewer

Some PDF files have interactive fields to fill in data (such as on forms). Using Firefox's built-in PDF viewer, you can fill out fields such as text, check boxes and radio buttons. After entering data into these fields, you can download the file to have the filled-out version saved to your computer.

PDF Viewer toolbar functions

Annotate pdf files.

Annotating a PDF allows you to add notes, highlights, and other markings directly on the document. This is especially useful for making corrections, highlighting important information, or adding personal notes for future reference.

Highlight in PDF files

Add a highlight, show/hide all highlights, edit or delete a highlight, add an image to pdf files.

In many PDF-related tasks, incorporating images can provide supplementary information to your content.

Inserting an image:

• Click + Add image . This will prompt the file selection window.
• Browse and select the desired image file to add it to the PDF.

Repositioning and resizing the image:

• Drag and drop the image to your preferred location within the PDF.
• To adjust the image size, click and drag its borders until it fits your desired dimensions.

Adding Alt Text for accessibility:

• After adding the image, click + Alt text .
• Write a concise description of the image for screen readers, or
• Mark the image as decorative if it's for aesthetic purposes only.

PDF Viewer keyboard shortcuts

Use a different pdf viewer for downloaded pdf files.

When Firefox is set as the default PDF viewer, and you download a PDF file in Firefox and save it to your computer, you can use a different application to view those PDF files by following these steps:

• Click the context menu item for the system default PDF viewer (for example, click Open in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC ) (for example, click Open in Preview ) to open the PDF file in that application.

Choose another PDF viewer to use by default or set Firefox to always ask

Disable the built-in pdf viewer and use another viewer.

Note: If Firefox is not your current default PDF viewer, you will be prompted to set it as the default when opening a PDF file in Firefox.

You can also set a different third-party PDF viewer to handle PDF files, instead of Firefox’s built-in PDF viewer. To switch from using the built-in PDF viewer to another viewer:

• In the General panel, go down to the Applications section.
• Find Portable Document Format (PDF) in the list and click the entry to select it.

Set Firefox to ask you what to do with PDF files

If you want Firefox to always ask you what to do with PDF files, follow the above steps to change the action for the Portable Document Format (PDF) entry, except select Always ask from the drop-down menu. The next time you click a link to download a PDF file, Firefox will show you a prompt asking what to do with the file. You can then choose to open it with Firefox's built-in PDF viewer, open it with a different PDF application, or you can choose to save the file.

Troubleshoot problems with the PDF viewer

• With certain types of PDF files, the PDF Viewer may have problems displaying fonts, colors, or the whole document. If some PDF files don't render well or are blank, click the download button on the right side of the document header to open it with the default PDF viewer application on your computer.
• If you can't open any PDF files with the built-in PDF viewer, a Firefox extension could be the cause. You can disable all of your extensions, to see if one of them was the problem. To present slide shows prepared in the PDF format, use Full Screen Mode .

Using the Laser Pointer

Use the Laser Pointer tool as a pointing device during presentations. The laser pointer is a large red circle that can easily be located even from a distance.

Alternatively, press the O key to switch to the laser pointer. Pressing the Esc key will get you back to the previously used tool.

In Full Screen Mode , the laser pointer is by default available as an Action Button .

Using the Pointer

As an alternative to the Laser Pointer tool, you can use the Pointer tool as a pointing device during presentations. The pointer is a large arrow, similar to a mouse cursor, that can easily be located even from a distance.

Alternatively, press the V key to switch to the laser pointer. Pressing the Esc key will get you back to the previously used tool.

Blacking out

To switch to a temporary black screen during a full screen presentation, press the Black Screen action button or the Alt+B keyboard shortcut.

Microsoft Edge's upcoming PDF feature could be perfect for presenting documents

A new feature for Microsoft Edge will make it easy to view and present PDFs without any distractions.

What you need to know

• Microsoft Edge may soon support a full screen mode for viewing PDFs.
• The full screen mode hides the PDF reader toolbar, which could be useful during presentations.
• PDF full screen mode automatically fits content to the size of a screen and allows you to scroll through documents.

Microsoft is working on a full screen mode for viewing PDFs in its Edge browser. The feature was spotted by Leo Varela, who shared screenshots of the functionality on Reddit . The full screen mode is available through Edge Canary but is part of a controlled rollout. That means that even if you are on the latest build of Edge Canary, you may not be able to try out the feature.

Edge already has an option to view any PDF or website in full screen mode but doing so still shows the PDF reader toolbar. The new PDF full screen mode hides the toolbar and automatically fits the document to fill the screen. An option to view two pages will also be available.

While hiding the toolbar could be used when just browsing PDFs, the mode is likely designed with presentations in mind. If you are sharing your screen in a virtual call or meeting, PDF full screen mode lays out a document in a way that's easy to view without distraction.

Varela notes that the entry on the Edge roadmap titled "Page scrolling on PDF documents" may refer to the new PDF full screen mode. That feature is marked in development with a planned release date of Q1 2022, which would line up with the option being in testing now.

An upcoming feature for Microsoft Edge will allow you to view PDFs in a full screen mode that hides the toolbar.

Cursor options for Adobe Reader in Full Screen mode

I've made the change from Powerpoint to Beamer for most of my stuff. There is just one last detail that I need to address.

When I use Adobe Acrobat Reader in Full Screen mode as a presentation tool, the only cursor style I have access to is a silly white hand with a down arrow in the middle of it. It's not noticeable enough. I'd like to replace it with something much more noticeable, like the laser pointer option in Powerpoint.

If tried to figure out how to do this in the Windows 10 cursor options -- but I don't even see the hand with the arrow that Acrobat Reader uses in the list that comes up, which makes it very hard to replace.

I'm also quite willing to use any (free) pdf reader that would provide me with the right option, but Foxit and Sumatra don't seem to do any better.

If I could find a straightforward artifact-free way to bring the pdf's into powerpoint, that would work too, but I haven't found one. If I have to do this slide-by-slide instead of file-by-file, that's not an amenable solution.

• @davidmneedham -- thanks, but I need to stick with realistically portable options. The lions share of the suggestions in the thread are for linux, and the recommendations are for a second-screen requirement, which I don't have. The png export is always an option, but that's what I meant by "Slide-by-Slide" –  Scott Seidman Jan 23, 2018 at 16:53

I found a solution by combing your suggestion of using another pdf viewer - the Sumatra or PDF-XChange Editor - and changing the system mouse pointer as described here https://softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/16761/presentation-software-with-a-cursor-looking-like-a-laser-pointer-instead-of-mous

"Go to the Mouse properties control panel, in the Devices and Pointers control panel section, click on the Pointers tab. Under the Customise scroll box there is a Browse... button. Clicking this allows you to select a .cur file to change the cursor's appearance. However, the built-in cursor files do not provide a laser-like cursor. This is where you have to create your own."

With just Adobe Acrobat:

• Cursor size: With current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, the mouse pointer size follows the size set in Windows: Settings → Cursor & Pointer .
• Then, in full-screen mode, Shift + D switches to different annotation tools (side effect is that it changes the cursor for some of them). After pressing it about 7 times , you will get a pen . You can use it to draw on the slide as well!
• H will get you your hand cursor back.
• S For a speech-bubble (comment - sticky note) cursor
