Canva is a wonderful accessible program that anyone can learn to use to make an array of graphic assets. You can use this versatile tool to elevate your next school presentation. Who says that school has to look boring? Making information visually appealing is extremely impactful and exactly what a designer does! Plus, making a factually accurate presentation that is fun and beautiful will score you extra points with your teacher. In today’s Canva tutorial , we will talk about how to make your school presentation stand out. These tips can be implemented and modified to make a presentation for your own topic for class. Not only will you have wonderful pieces you can use for school but you can have a bit more fun doing homework!

In a crowd of presentations, how do you make yours stand out? There are many boring pre-made templates that don’t use enough pictures out there, and if you’re in a time crunch there’s no problem using these. This tutorial wants to challenge you to create a stunning presentation from scratch rather than copying and pasting into a carbon-copied template. Here you will learn a few tricks to turning your boring school presentation to an eye-catching work of art.

1. Have a stunning opener

First impressions are important and that counts for school presentations too! Make that first opening slide memorable but remember to keep it relevant to your topic. Remember, keep the aesthetic for the rest of your presentation, because the opening slide sets the tone for the rest of the presentation.

Make sure not to overcrowd your opening slide with pictures, graphics, or words. In this case, less is more. You can even make one image frame your text for an effortless but professional look. Just make sure to have all the important information on there.

2. Limit the colors in your presentation

Use no more than five colors for your whole presentation. Remember simplicity is key. It is hard to know which words or information is important if every word is a different color! Use color sparingly, consistently and to highlight important information. Use your colors as accents, not the main stars of your presentation.

3. Have consistent slides

Build a template you can follow throughout your presentation. Or chose any of Canva's existing templates from the toolbar on the left. Then adapt the colors to make it uniquely your own by clicking on each object in the template, clicking on the color box near the top left of your slide window, and changing the color.

Add visual interest by using a second font. Pair different fonts and styles for body copy and titles in your slides and stick with it with all of your slides. In terms of fonts, also try to stick to a sans-serif font, as it will be easier for audience members to read. Pick a similar background and use the same colors throughout your presentation and make them indicate similar things throughout your presentation to create a design language with your audience and solidify information rapidly.

4. Add stunning photos

Have you noticed the most boring presentations lack any visual elements and pictures? Although some may think it distracting from the information at hand, visuals can help solidify information in your presentation. A lot of people learn in different ways, so by keeping it entertaining and visually appealing for those visual learners, you can broaden the interest of your audience. In fact, visuals are processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text!

To add photos or graphics in Canva, use the toolbar on the left to click on Elements. Then search for the item you're hoping to add. Next click on Photos, Graphics or Videos to see relevant results for each type of content. Once you find the image you like, just click on it and drag it onto your slide. You can also upload your own images by clicking Upload in the left-hand toolbar.

5. Write short, direct bullet points

Presentations are all about information so we want the message to be clear. Remember, less means more! Like in the title page, only put the most important information on your slides and make them short and easy to understand sentences. Visuals can help where words can fail.

6. Add some finishing flourish

You can add simple animations and transitions between slides to really make your presentation come to life! To add animations simply click on the objects on your slide you want to animate, and then click Animate above your working window. You'll have to option to chose how those objects move onto the slide, such as from the left side, from the bottom, and so on. You can also use animation to make items get larger or smaller (select under Scale), and really pop out by tumbling (select under Exaggerate), and more.

7. Don’t forget to research!

Now that you have a visually stunning presentation, hit it out of the ball park by having accurate facts fill in those short bullet points. What your teacher will care about is facts, making it look pretty is the icing on the cake. Research your topic online, reference your textbook, and ask your teacher for more information if needed!

2. PowerPoint and Google Slides

Two of the classic slide-building apps, PowerPoint and Google Slides feel very traditional compared to many of the other tools listed here. Still, both apps are easy introductions to the concept of creating basic 2D designs and visually appealing presentations. PowerPoint Presentations and Google Slides allow students to create slideshow content with transitions, animations, multiple slide layouts, and more.

The app intelligently analyzes the text that your students add to their slides, then it suggests photos and slide designs that make sense for that text.

Haiku Deck gives users access to over 40 million royalty-free images (meaning no more watermarks or pixelated backgrounds) and includes dozens of themes designed by pros, complete with complementary fonts picked out for each one.

Haiku Deck is mostly a standalone tool. So, while you don’t get deep integrations with other tools, you might not really need them.

Before they ever explain what Pear Deck is, the team behind Pear Deck points to research showing that learning has both social, emotional and academic components and goes into great detail about the research-backed instructional strategies that the platform supports.

So, this tool comes from a team that’s dedicated to improving educational outcomes for all kinds of learners. But what does it do, exactly?

Essentially, Pear Deck operates as an add-on to Google Slides or PowerPoint and allows you to turn those static presentation tools into dynamic, interactive educational experiences. You can embed quizzes, tutorials, and other interactive content and see student responses in real time.

Although it’s aimed at teachers, it can be used by students to enhance their own presentations with engaging content like Q&A or audio and video, and gives them more creative freedom. 

Sutori is a tool that’s purpose built to help students create timelines and roadmaps and tell stories. It’s simple and streamlined, making it easy for students of all ages to use. Students can even embed media on their Sutori timelines, and Sutori is easy to use online and via remote learning.

Sutori’s timeline focus makes it perfect for social studies or history and any other linear, time-based lessons. The company also lists use cases for English, Language, Arts, and STEM teachers. It’s a great tool for fostering multimedia collaboration, critical thinking (via both primary and secondary sources), and research skills.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words 📸, and if that’s true, how much more is an infographic worth? A lot, when it comes to the classroom. Infographics are great storytelling tools, not to mention visual aids. The trouble is that making great infographics from scratch have required graphic design skills🧑‍💻  — until tools like Easelly.

Before we get into the opening lines, here are some pointers to ensure your presentation has a good structure that will keep the audience engaged.

How to structure a good presentation

State the relevance and purpose to the audience, identify a core message, divide your presentation into three parts, use a simple and clear structure, use engaging and relevant slides, practice and rehearse your delivery, q & a session.

Determine the purpose of your presentation. What do you want your audience to learn or take away from it? Consider the knowledge level, interests, and expectations of your audience. This will help you tailor your content appropriately. Explain why the information is important or relevant to your audience

Identify a single central message that you would like to communicate to your audience. Then build your presentation around that core message. Select a clear and focused topic that aligns with the objectives of the assignment or class.

Presentation knows that each family has different needs for their children, especially when it comes to the hours after school. Each day, after school care (AFTERCARE), allows students the opportunity to remain on campus with a trained and caring adult from 3:30-5:00 pm, easing the strain for working parents. The cost of Aftercare is $15/hr for the 2023-2024 school year. For more information, contact our After School Coordinator, Mr. Freitas.

Exploring the intersections of global health: A recap of the Takemi Poster Presentation Day

On May 7, 2024, the Takemi Program welcomed students, faculty, and experts to the Takemi Poster Presentation Day. This event showcased research and facilitated discussions around three overarching themes: infectious diseases, mental health and social determinants, and health policy and database. The session took place in the Kresge Atrium at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Infectious diseases: Confronting global health threats

Dr. Adam Abdullahi’s findings regarding the impact of dolutegravir (DTG)-based antiretroviral therapy in Nigeria were hopeful and urgent. He presented the significant progress made with DTG, which achieved robust virological suppression in about 80% of patients. Yet, his poster highlighted challenges like low-level viraemia and sub-optimal retention rates. Adam’s call to action was clear: Nigeria must continue scaling up DTG usage, ensuring thorough monitoring and support to enhance patient retention and curb the spread of HIV.

Dr. Arnaud Iradukund research reveals the devastating intersection of COVID-19 and tuberculosis (TB) in Burundi. With a somber tone, he shared how TB and multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) mortality rates soared during the pandemic, especially among those with low socio-economic status. His findings underscored the critical need for robust TB control programs that can adapt to and withstand new health crises, ensuring no one is left behind.

Dr. Christopher da Costa, brings attention to the complexities of prioritizing a Lassa Fever vaccine in endemic countries. His scoping review laid bare the scarcity of evidence guiding vaccine decision-making. Christopher’s message was one of urgency and foresight: further research is essential to overcome barriers to vaccine procurement, and financial support is needed to ensure these vaccines reach those who need them most.

Mental health and social determinants: Understanding human well-being

Dr. Fareeda Abo-Rass focuses on mental health, particularly among Palestinian adolescents in Israel. Her poster discussed the high levels of mental health literacy among these adolescents. Still, it lamented their reluctance to seek formal help. Fareeda’s research revealed a critical insight: trust in formal sources of information is paramount. She advocated for interventions that improve access to mental health resources and foster trust in health institutions, aiming to bridge the gap between need and help-seeking behavior.

Dr. Kazutaka Yoshida explored the loneliness epidemic among older Japanese adults. His study compared how family physicians and nurses diagnose loneliness, revealing that physicians were generally more sensitive in their diagnoses. Kazutaka’s findings highlighted the need for a collaborative approach in primary care, one that leverages the strengths of both physicians and nurses to better address the issue of loneliness.

Dr. Mariko Inoue’s poster on health disparities among gig workers in Japan vividly portrayed modern labor struggles. She revealed that gig workers, especially those with lower incomes and education levels, experienced higher levels of psychological distress. Mariko’s narrative was a powerful call to action for protecting labor rights and promoting safe working environments, advocating for policies supporting all workers’ well-being.

Health policy and database: Shaping the future of health systems

Dr. Wafa Aftab’s research compels arguments for a paradigm shift in health policy. She emphasized the need for health ministries to prioritize intersectoral actions that address the social determinants of health. Dr. Aftab’s research highlights the challenges in policy-making and the necessity for health ministries to expand their agendas and strengthen their capacity to coordinate with other sectors, ensuring a holistic approach to public health.

Finally, Dr. Maihan Abdullah brought the conversation to Afghanistan, presenting his research on the battle against cancer in a country with limited data. His poster was filled with sobering statistics about the prevalence of esophageal and breast cancers. Maihan’s work underscored the urgent need for comprehensive data collection and targeted interventions to combat the cancer burden in Afghanistan effectively.

Pesticide education program returns to Washington County classrooms

Penn State Extension of Washington County’s pesticide education program had fallen by the wayside since the pandemic, but the organization hopes Mr. Yuk will be back in all of the county’s first-grade classrooms next school year.

Cathy Witsberger, a master gardener and coordinator of the Washington County program, started giving presentations to elementary school students this spring.

“It has been more active in other counties … Washington County didn’t really do it at all last year. We’re sort of getting back into it. We’re doing live and in-person presentations,” Witsberger said.

The purpose of the program is two-fold. Witsberger said she talks to students about both how to identify what counts as a “pest,” and how dangerous household chemicals used to deal with pests can be.

“What makes something a pest is where it is and what it’s doing. A bat in your basement or house is a pest. Outside, it’s not a pest. Poison ivy is a pest if it’s in a playground. In the forest, it provides nutrition for birds who eat the berries,” Witsberger said.

Witsberger added that she goes through different types of pest management and advises kids that there are alternatives to pesticides. For example, a mouse problem might be solved by just staying tidy and not leaving food out.

When it comes time for chemicals, though, that is where Mr. Yuk comes into play. Mr. Yuk is a symbol created by the Pittsburgh Poison Center in 1971 as part of an effort to prevent poisonings. Witsberger said children are given a sheet of Mr. Yuk stickers to take home and identify potentially harmful substances in their home.

Witsberger discusses a variety of common household products – from dishwasher detergent to rat poison – and what signal words to look for on the labels. These words include caution, warning and poison, and signify how toxic the product may be.

In addition to the stickers, students are also sent home with a letter to their parents and an activity asking them to place Mr. Yuk stickers on toxic products and make sure they are stored at least five feet high.

Elementary schools that Witsberger visited this year include Avella, Beth-Center, Hills-Hendersonville, Ringgold North, Trinity North and Trinity West.

Susan Crawford, a first-grade teacher at Trinity North, felt it was a useful lesson for her students when WItsberger visited her classroom in February.

“We are so thankful that you came in and gave us this valuable presentation. You have no idea the lives you might be saving,” Crawford recalled saying to Witsberger.

According to Witsberger, they connected with more than 460 first-graders. Next year she hopes the program can reach every public and private school in Washington County.

“Our hope is that children will recognize dangerous substances and understand why they need to stay away from them,” Witsberger said.

In Fayette County, the pesticide education program has been in full swing. Susan Shoemaker, the coordinator of the Master Gardeners of Fayette County, said they visited each elementary school in the county and talked to about 1,300 first-graders.

“The kids absolutely are very receptive to it. They ask great questions,” Shoemaker said.

Shoemaker said the program is helpful to both kids and parents.

“The children learn that there are pesticides and poisons that they absolutely should not touch. You see that green Mr. Yuk sticker, stay away,” Shoemaker said.

Department of family medicine, scholarly projects.

As part of a fully integrated four-year residency, our residents complete an individual, longitudinal capstone project which requires sustained effort over the four years of residency. These projects provide residents with the opportunity to integrate and demonstrate their knowledge of a subject that interests them.

Upon completion, residents will have produced one of the following learning outcomes:

• Development of a postgraduate medical education curriculum that is testable and can be implemented by our residency or in other educational settings.
• A quality improvement intervention that can be reported in a publication that reflects the Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE) publication guidelines.
• A clinical or community-based research project that results in a peer-reviewed, publication-ready article.

Developing one of these three learning outcomes provides our residents another avenue for professional development and a means to contribute to the knowledge base of the  medical profession.

Wayne State University

School of medicine, capewayne center to advance palliative-care excellence (capewayne).

Fellows attend weekly in person didactic sessions where palliative medicine faculty and other specialists present on pertinent HPM topics.  Shared didactics with Henry Ford and Trinity Ann Arbor allows for collaboration among faculty and fellows for the highest quality education.

Fellows will present a journal club and complex case or topic presentation during didactic time.

All fellows attend the annual meeting of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine as well as several local conferences and grand rounds. An educational stipend is provided to defray the cost of attendance at out of state conferences.

Fellows are included in faculty development opportunities.

All fellows participate in a quality improvement and/or research project during their training. Past projects have included book chapters, case presentations at AAHPM meeting and nursing education on opioid-induced constipation.

Students and Faculty Mentors Celebrated at Student Research Day

Student research day scientific poster session, student research day, shelli farhadian, md, phd, and john k. forrest, md, peter aronson, md, c.n.h. long professor of medicine (nephrology) and professor of cellular and molecular physiology.

On May 7, 2024, students and faculty mentors were celebrated at Yale School of Medicine’s (YSM) Student Research Day (SRD), an annual tradition at YSM since 1988. Five medical students (Chinye Ijile, Amanda Lieberman, Kingson Lin, Victoria Marks, and Jamieson O’Marr) made thesis presentations, and over 75 students, from across Yale’s health profession schools, displayed scientific posters and engaged with attendees during the poster session.

“Today we’re showcasing a diverse range of mentored research—spanning from fundamental basic science, to implementation science—performed by student investigators from across the health professions schools,” Associate Dean for Student Research Sarwat Chaudhry, MD, professor of medicine (general medicine), said in opening remarks. Associate Dean for Student Research Erica Herzog, MD, PhD, John Slade Ely Professor of Medicine (pulmonary) and professor of pathology, added, “We take immense pride in Yale’s deep-rooted tradition of embedding research within medical education. For our students, experience in scientific investigation isn't merely a stepping stone towards a successful residency match or a career in academic research; it's foundational training for their lifelong commitment to medicine.”

Farr Lecture

The Lee E. Farr MD Endowed Lectureship and the presentation of the Dr. John N. Forrest, Jr., Mentorship Award, which bookended the student thesis presentations, honored YSM faculty for their outstanding mentorship. In introducing Peter Aronson, MD, C.N.H. Long Professor of Medicine (Nephrology) and professor of cellular and molecular physiology, as the Farr lecturer, Nancy J. Brown, MD, Jean and David W. Wallace Dean and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine, explained that the lecture aims to stimulate thinking and to inspire students to strive to achieve more effective leadership and educational roles in society. Brown said that Aronson, who has been at YSM for 50 years since joining as a nephrology fellow in 1974, “epitomizes these qualities as a physician-scientist, educator, mentor, and colleague. As such, there is no one more fitting to speak at today’s event.”

As chief of the Section of Nephrology from 1987-2002, Brown said, Aronson nurtured the development of numerous physician-scientists, both as faculty and fellows, many of whom became recognized leaders—and many of whom remain at Yale and were present on SRD. “It goes without saying” Brown concluded, “that Dr. Aronson’s stewardship is one reason for the enduring strength of Yale’s 200-year tradition of medical student research,” noting he had been part of the tradition for one quarter of the 200 years. (In comments after Aronson spoke, Herzog noted several of his student evaluations simply said GOAT: “Greatest Of All Time.”)

Using his own experiences as examples in his lecture titled From Sugar to Salt to Stones: Serendipitous Journey as Mentee and Mentor, Aronson noted the importance of chance events and serendipitous research findings in determining the course of his academic development and research career. ( This article describes his remarks in detail .) In closing, Aronson honored the late John N. Forrest, Jr., professor emeritus of medicine and the founding director of YSM’s Office of Student Research (OSR). Forrest, he said, “exemplified extraordinary commitment to the process of education and mentorship,” adding “we should all be inspired by his example of what is most gratifying in academic medicine.”

Chaudhry similarly honored John N. Forrest, Jr. in introducing the mentorship award established to recognize his legacy. “As many of you know, Dr. Forrest died earlier this year, and so this year’s Forrest Prize holds special meaning.” OSR “was his pride and joy,” Chaudhry said, adding that since starting their roles as associate deans of student research in 2020, “Dr. Herzog and I have continually been impressed by Dr. Forrest’s care and foresight in establishing the Office of Student Research. Dr. Forrest’s legacy lives on in the enduring strength of YSM’s medical student research program.”

Before Forrest’s son, John K. Forrest, MD, associate professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine), announced the award recipient— Shelli Farhadian, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (infectious diseases); assistant professor, epidemiology of microbial diseases —he shared, “My family and I are grateful to the numerous people who reached out after our father’s passing. Some of the most touching correspondence we received were from medical students, residents, and fellows whom he had mentored while at Yale. There is no greater evidence of the lasting impact that mentorship plays in the lives of young physicians that the words contained in those letters.”

Turning to the awardee, Forrest said, “Dr. Farhadian is an exemplary mentor,” and pointed to her role “in shaping the careers of her mentees, many of whom have garnered multiple awards and recognition, and published first author manuscripts under her tutelage.”

He then shared what a student wrote about Farhadian: “Dr. Farhadian is such a fantastic mentor and person. As my mentor she encouraged me to apply for grants and submit to conferences and journals and has always made herself available to answer any questions that I have. She also facilitates an environment in which her mentees feel comfortable coming to her with questions and offers help in connecting me with doctors in my fields of interest. Beyond my research with Dr. Farhadian, she has also proved to be an invaluable resource in terms of developing as a student and a future doctor. She is an inspiring woman in medicine, and I hope to become as caring and capable as a doctor and mentor as she models.”

Upon receiving the award, Farhadian said, “It means a great deal for me to receive this award in Dr. Forrest’s name. I was lucky to cross paths with Dr. Forrest when I was an intern, and I will always remember how kind he was to everyone in the hospital, no matter how small their role.” Farhadian added, “I feel very lucky to have had my own exceptional research mentors along the way, and I have tried to emulate them when mentoring my own trainees.”

City of Lawrence to host community presentation on Massachusetts Street improvements project

The City of Lawrence will host a community presentation next week to share more information about a study that since October 2023 has been gathering feedback on potential improvements to the stretch of Massachusetts Street between 14th and 23rd streets.

On Wednesday, the city will host a presentation at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, 1400 Massachusetts St., from 5 to 6 p.m. in the second floor library. The middle school is located at one end of the portion of Massachusetts Street the city has been examining for improvements.

According to a press release about the presentation, city staff will present a preferred alternative concept design and a design report developed using input from the community, traffic analysis, guidance from master plans and input from city leaders. The improvements study aims to improve the functionality and safety of the corridor for all types of transportation — including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and automobile users.

“The project is located in a signature corridor for the city and, as such, seeks a high level of community engagement,” the release reads.

According to the release, the project will culminate in a set of recommended improvements that will be reviewed by the city’s Multimodal Transportation Commission and the Lawrence City Commission.

The Budget Proposal — Covering Two Years — Cuts Spending, Makes Government Leaner, and Preserves Core Services Without New Taxes on Hardworking Californians

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:  The Governor’s revised budget proposal closes both this year’s remaining $27.6 billion budget shortfall and next year’s projected $28.4 billion deficit while preserving many key services that Californians rely on — including education, housing, health care, and food assistance.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today released a May Revision proposal for the 2024-25 fiscal year that ensures the budget is balanced over the next two fiscal years by tightening the state’s belt and stabilizing spending following the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic, all while preserving key ongoing investments.

Under the Governor’s proposal, the state is projected to achieve a positive operating reserve balance not only in this budget year but also in the next. This “budget year, plus one” proposal is designed to bring longer-term stability to state finances without delay and create an operating surplus in the 2025-26 budget year.

In the years leading up to this May Revision, the Newsom Administration recognized the threats of an uncertain stock market and federal tax deadline delays – setting aside $38 billion in reserves that could be utilized for shortfalls. That has put California in a strong position to maintain fiscal stability.

“Even when revenues were booming, we were preparing for possible downturns by investing in reserves and paying down debts – that’s put us in a position to close budget gaps while protecting core services that Californians depend on. Without raising taxes on Californians, we’re delivering a balanced budget over two years that continues the progress we’ve fought so hard to achieve, from getting folks off the streets to addressing the climate crisis to keeping our communities safe.” – Governor Gavin Newsom

Below are the key takeaways from Governor Newsom’s proposed budget:

A BALANCED BUDGET OVER TWO YEARS.  The Governor is solving two years of budget problems in a single budget, tightening the state’s belt to get the budget back to normal after the tumultuous years of the COVID-19 pandemic. By addressing the shortfall for this budget year — and next year — the Governor is eliminating the 2024-25 deficit and eliminating a projected deficit for the 2025-26 budget year that is $27.6 billion (after taking an early budget action) and $28.4 billion respectively.

CUTTING SPENDING, MAKING GOVERNMENT LEANER.  Governor Newsom’s revised balanced state budget cuts one-time spending by $19.1 billion and ongoing spending by $13.7 billion through 2025-26. This includes a nearly 8% cut to state operations and a targeted elimination of 10,000 unfilled state positions, improving government efficiency and reducing non-essential spending — without raising taxes on individuals or proposing state worker furloughs. The budget makes California government more efficient, leaner, and modern — saving costs by streamlining procurement, cutting bureaucratic red tape, and reducing redundancies.

PRESERVING CORE SERVICES & SAFETY NETS.  The budget maintains service levels for key housing, food, health care, and other assistance programs that Californians rely on while addressing the deficit by pausing the expansion of certain programs and decreasing numerous recent one-time and ongoing investments.

NO NEW TAXES & MORE RAINY DAY SAVINGS.  Governor Newsom is balancing the budget by getting state spending under control — cutting costs, not proposing new taxes on hardworking Californians and small businesses — and reducing the reliance on the state’s “Rainy Day” reserves this year.

HOW WE GOT HERE:  California’s budget shortfall is rooted in two separate but related developments over the past two years.

• First, the state’s revenue, heavily reliant on personal income taxes including capital gains, surged in 2021 due to a robust stock market but plummeted in 2022 following a market downturn. While the market bounced back by late 2023, the state continued to collect less tax revenue than projected in part due to something called “capital loss carryover,” which allows losses from previous years to reduce how much an individual is taxed.
• Second, the IRS extended the tax filing deadline for most California taxpayers in 2023 following severe winter storms, delaying the revelation of reduced tax receipts. When these receipts were able to eventually be processed, they were 22% below expectations. Without the filing delay, the revenue drop would have been incorporated into last year’s budget and the shortfall this year would be significantly smaller.

CALIFORNIA’S ECONOMY REMAINS STRONG:  The Governor’s revised balanced budget sets the state up for continued economic success. California’s economy remains the 5th largest economy in the world and for the first time in years, the state’s population is increasing and tourism spending recently experienced a record high. California is #1 in the nation for new business starts , #1 for access to venture capital funding , and the #1 state for manufacturing , high-tech , and agriculture .
