Rasputin

(1869-1916)

Who Was Rasputin?

After failing to become a monk, Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin became a wanderer and eventually entered the court of Czar Nicholas II because of his alleged healing abilities. Known for his prophetic powers, he became a favorite of the Nicholas's wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, but his political influence was minor. Rasputin became swept up in the events of the Russian Revolution and met a brutal death at the hands of assassins in 1916.

Born to a Siberian peasant family around 1869, Rasputin received little schooling and probably never learned to read or write. In his early years, some people of his village said he possessed supernatural powers, while others cite examples of extreme cruelty. For a time, it was believed his name "Rasputin" meant "licentious" in Russian. Historians now believe that "Rasputin" meant "where two rivers meet," a phrase that describes an area near where he was born in Siberia.

Rasputin entered the Verkhoture Monastery in Russia with the intention of becoming a monk, but left shortly thereafter, presumably to get married. At age 19, he wed Proskovia Fyodorovna, and they later had three children (two others died shortly after birth). In his early 20s, however, Rasputin left his family and traveled to Greece and the Middle East, making several pilgrimages to the Holy Land.

Friend of the Imperial Family

In 1903, Rasputin's wanderings brought him to St. Petersburg, where he arrived with a reputation as a mystic and faith healer. Two years later, he was introduced to Russian Czar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, who were seeking help for their sickly son, Alexis. Rasputin quickly gained their confidence by seemingly "curing" the boy of hemophilia. This action won him the passionate support of Alexandra.

Between 1906 and 1914, various politicians and journalists used Rasputin’s association with the imperial family to undermine the dynasty’s credibility and push for reform. Rasputin helped their efforts by claiming to be the Czarina’s advisor, and accounts of his rampant lascivious behavior emerged in the press, compounding contempt among state officials. In truth, however, Rasputin's influence at this time was limited to the health of Alexis.

As Russia entered World War I, Rasputin predicted that calamity would befall the country. Nicholas II took command of the Russian Army in 1915, and Alexandra took responsibility for domestic policy. Always Rasputin's defender, she dismissed ministers who were said to be suspicious of the "mad monk." Government officials tried to warn her of Rasputin's undue influence, but she continued to defend him, giving the impression that Rasputin was her closest advisor.

On the night of December 29, 1916, a group of conspirators, including the czar's first cousin, Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, and Prince Felix Yusupov, invited Rasputin to Yusupov's palace and fed him wine and cakes laced with cyanide. Though Rasputin eventually became rather drunk, the poison seemed to have no effect. Baffled but not deterred, the conspirators finally shot Rasputin multiple times. He was then wrapped in a carpet and thrown into the Neva River, where it was discovered three days later.

Although Rasputin was gone, the last of his prophecies was yet to unfold. Shortly before his death, he wrote to Nicholas to predict that if he were killed by government officials, the entire imperial family would be killed by the Russian people. His prophecy came true 15 months later, when the czar, his wife and all of their children were murdered by assassins amidst the Russian Revolution.

Romanov Family

By: History.com Editors

Updated: August 30, 2022 | Original: September 21, 2017

The Romanov family: Tsar Nicholas II of Russia with his wife, Alexandra of Hesse-Darmstadt, and her daughters, Ol'ga, Tat'jana, Marjia e Anastasia and Aleksej. 1913

The Romanov family was the last imperial dynasty to rule Russia. They first came to power in 1613, and over the next three centuries, 18 Romanovs took the Russian throne, including Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Alexander I and Nicholas II. During the Russian Revolution of 1917, Bolshevik revolutionaries toppled the monarchy, ending the Romanov dynasty. Czar Nicholas II and his entire family—including his young children—were later executed by Bolshevik troops.

WATCH: Secrets of the Romanovs on HISTORY Vault

Peter the Great

The Romanovs were high-ranking aristocrats in Russia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In 1613, Mikhail Romanov became the first Romanov czar of Russia, following a fifteen-year period of political upheaval after the fall of Russia’s medieval Rurik dynasty. He took the name Michael I.

Michael I’s grandson Peter I, also known as Peter the Great , transformed Russia from a landlocked state into one of Europe’s largest empires. Through wars against the Ottoman Empire and the Empire of Sweden, Russia expanded its territory and became the dominant power in both the Baltic Sea and Black Sea regions.

Peter I declared himself emperor of the newly formed Russian Empire in 1721, a position he held until his death in 1725.

Catherine the Great

During the reign of Romanov leader Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great , the Russian Empire grew larger and stronger. The period of Catherine’s rule—1762 to 1796—is often called the Golden Age of the Russian Empire.

Catherine II was a sophisticated patron of the arts, and during her reign, Russia adopted Western European philosophies, fashions and culture.

In later years, a campaign by Russian Emperor Alexander I represented a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars. The French invaded Russia in 1812 at the height of Napoleon Bonaparte ’s power. Alexander I’s army defeated the French troops, dealing a major blow to Napoleon’s reputation and weakening his leadership over much of Europe.

Czar Nicholas II

Czar Nicholas II was the last Romanov emperor, ruling from 1894 until his forced abdication in March of 1917. The duration of his rule was plagued by periods of political and social unrest. When he succeeded his father—Czar Alexander III—Nicholas II had little experience in government. He was widely seen as a politically weak, indecisive leader.

His poor handling of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, subsequent 1905 uprising of Russian Workers—known as Bloody Sunday —and Russia’s involvement in World War I hastened the fall of the Russian Empire.

Czar Nicholas II married Princess Alix of Hesse, a duchy in the German Empire in 1894, shortly after his coronation. Alix, who would later take the name Alexandra Feodorovna, was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Nicholas and Alexandra had four daughters—Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia—and one son, Alexei.

Rasputin and the Romanovs

Alexandra—with a brusque demeanor and distaste for Russian culture—was disliked by most of the Russian people. Her German ancestry and her devotion to Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin contributed to her unpopularity. She believed the self-proclaimed holy man could cure her son Alexei’s chronic illness.

Alexei, the only son and heir to the throne, suffered from severe hemophilia, and was often confined to bed. Hemophilia is an inherited disease in which the blood doesn’t clot normally, causing excessive bleeding after any injury. (Many relatives of Queen Victoria inherited the disease, which was sometimes referred to as “the royal disease.”)

Rasputin’s powerful influence on the ruling family infuriated nobles, church leaders and peasants alike. Many saw him as a religious charlatan. Russian nobles, eager to end the cleric’s influence, had Rasputin murdered on December 16, 1916.

Czar Nicholas II left Saint Petersburg in 1915 to take command of the failing Russian Army front in World War I. But by 1917, most Russians had lost all faith in the leadership ability of the czar.

Government corruption was rampant and the Russian economy was severely battered by World War I. Moderates joined with radical Bolshevik revolutionaries in calling for an overthrow of the czar. After years of turmoil, Nicholas II finally abdicated the throne on March 15, 1917, putting an end to more than 300 years of Romanov rule.

Romanov Execution

During the Russian Revolution in November 1917, radical socialist Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin , seized power in Russia from a provisional government, establishing the world’s first communist state.

The imperial family was sent to live under house arrest in Siberia. In April and May 1918, members of the Romanov family were relocated to Ipatiev House—a merchant’s house in Yekaterinburg.

After the revolution, civil war between the Bolshevik “Red” army and the anti-Bolshevik “White” Russian forces broke out in June. By July, the White army was advancing on Yekaterinburg.

Local authorities were ordered to prevent a rescue of the Romanovs by the White army, and after a secret meeting of the Yekaterinburg Soviet, the imperial family was sentenced to death.

On the night of July 16, 1918, the family was ordered to dress and go down to the cellar of the Ipatiev House where they were lined up as if posing for a family photograph. Then, the entire Romanov family was executed by firing squad and bayoneted to death by Bolshevik troops.

The remains of the family were discovered in a mass grave in the Ural Mountains in 1991. Subsequent DNA testing confirmed the identities of the Nicholas, Alexandra and three of their daughters.

The remains of Alexei and one of his sisters remained a mystery until 2007 when a second grave was discovered near the larger mass grave. The grave contained the remains of two partially burned skeletons, which subsequent DNA testing showed to belong to Alexei, and one of his sisters, likely Anastasia or Maria.

Anastasia Romanov

In the wake of the Czar Nicholas’ execution, rumors swirled that his youngest daughter, Anastasia Romanov , may have escaped her family’s grim fate. The legend persisted for nearly a century, inspiring numerous books and films. Over the years, dozens of women came forward, claiming to be the Romanov princess.

The best-known Anastasia imposter was Anna Anderson , a young woman pulled out of a canal in Berlin, Germany, in 1920 after an attempted suicide. Anderson was sent to an asylum where she told fellow patients she was the Grand Duchess Anastasia.

Her claims received public attention, though most members of the extended Romanov family believed her to be an imposter. A private investigation funded by Czarina Alexandra’s brother in 1927 found that Anna Anderson was actually a Polish factory worker named Franziska Schanzkowska with a history of mental illness.

Rasputin, - natal chart (noon, no houses)

Russian Siberian peasant, a monk and mystic who became a great favorite of the court of the last Czar, exercising an undue influence. Introduced to Nicholas and Alexandra in 1907 to help their hemophiliac son, he was the only one who was able to successfully stop the boy's bleeding attacks and he soon gained the reputation of being a saint and healer. By 1911 he was thoroughly ensconced in royal favor. Rasputin met the tsar and his wife for the first time on 1 November 1905 OS in Peterhof at 4:00 pm. (P.70 quoted from the tsar's diary.)

Born in a village in Siberia, he left his home, wife and three kids in 1891 to follow a holy vision. He preached a doctrine of sin and the need to be saved, stressing the evil of the sins of the flesh. He not only gained a ministerial following but the noblewomen succumbed easily to his rough sexual approach. Bearded, with burning eyes, unwashed and licentious, away from the court he indulged in uninhibited debauchery. He lived the rest of his life apart from his family. His daughter wrote that he had a 13" phallus, which he apparently put to good use.

With powerful enemies in a court seething with intrigue, he was invited to a dinner by a few of the aristocracy on the late evening of 16 December 1916. According to Yusupov's account, Yusupov invited Rasputin to his home shortly after midnight, and ushered him into the basement. Yusupov offered Rasputin tea and cakes which had been laced with cyanide. At first, Rasputin refused the cakes, but then began to eat them. To Yusupov's surprise, Rasputin did not appear to be affected by the poison. Rasputin then asked for some Madeira wine (which had also been poisoned) and drank three glasses, but still showed no sign of distress. At around 2:30 am, Yusupov excused himself to go upstairs, where his fellow conspirators were waiting. Taking a revolver from Dmitry Pavlovich, Yusupov returned to the basement and, referring to a crucifix that was in the room, told Rasputin that he'd "better look at the crucifix and say a prayer," then shot him once in the chest. Believing him to be dead, they then drove to Rasputin's apartment, with Sukhotin wearing Rasputin's coat and hat, in an attempt to make it look as though Rasputin had returned home that night. Upon returning to the Moika Palace, Yusupov went back to the basement to ensure that Rasputin was dead. Suddenly, Rasputin leapt up and attacked Yusupov, who - with some effort - freed himself and fled upstairs. Rasputin followed, and made it into the palace's courtyard before being shot by Purishkevich and collapsing into a snowbank. The conspirators then wrapped Rasputin's body in cloth, drove it to the Petrovsky Bridge and dropped it into the Malaya Nevka River.

Source Notes

Lina Accurso writes on 2/1998 that she saw an A&E biography on 11/25/1997 in which Rasputin's church records read January 10, 1869 (OS).

Filipe Ferreira quotes BBC-Timewatch documentary of 6/08/1994, "The Real Rasputin," which showed a recently discovered birth record with the information of January 10, 1869. Ferreira wrote to the Rasputin Museum asking if a time is known, but there was no answer. The same date is given in Edvard Radzinsky's "Rasputin: The Last Word," Phoenix, London, 2000, pp 30-32 (copy in LMR files).

Becky Altschuler writes, " Grigory Efimovich Rasputin was born in the Tyumen district of the province of Tobol in the village of Pokrovskoe...... A census of the residents of the village of Pokrovskoe was found in the Tyumen archive, and appearing next to the name Grigory Rasputin in the column for 'year, month, and day of birth' is the date 10 January 1869." Book notes this is the day of Saint Grigory for whom he was named. This is from Edvard Radzinsky "The Rasputin File," Doubleday, 2000. pp. 24-25. A notation in the front of the book states that all dates are from the Old Style calendar."

Rasputin met the tsar and his wife for the first time on 1 November 1905 in Peterhof at 4:00 pm. This is on p. 70 quoted from the tsar's diary. I believe Peterhof is an area ( city, village) and not a palace name although I am not positive. This is also O.S..

Sally Davis writes in Transit September 1999 that Soviet records have confirmed the same date and place in two books: 10 January 1869 OS (January 22 NS) in Pokrovskoye in Tobolsk Province, 57 N.16, 66 E.50.

Dorothy Kovach on ACT internet, 4/2001, adds, "The new book by Edvard Radzinsky, "The Rasputin File" verifies once again his birthdate as Jan 10, 1869 (OS) in the village Pokrovskoe on the banks of the Tura, province of Tobol, Siberia 57N16 ~ 66E50. The date was taken from a census of the residents of the village of Pokrovskoe which was found in the Tyumen archive. It is the day of Saint Grigory, for whom he was named. The dates in the encyclopedias are wrong. She adds that "Much new material coming from the Extraordinary Commission of the Provisional Government...13th Section re Rasputin of 1917. This had been lost for most of the century until turning up at Sotheby's; purchased by

Mstislav Rostropovitch and given as a gift to the author. All dates in the book are given in (OS) unless otherwise indicated: five hundred pages of documents in the file.

"The immense interest in Rasputin has continued unabated both in Russia and abroad. This book answers many questions."

The time of 2:00 AM is an approximate rectification by LMR to put Scorpio on the ASC, late Leo on the MC.

(Formerly, AA in 5/1943 claimed possession of a photostat of a letter from Rasputin's daughter that gives January 10, 1870 OS, January 23, 1871 NS, "no known hour. The biography by his daughter Maria read, "The night of January 23, 1871, a meteor turned downward and before it hit the earth, he was born." (Note that the daughter's date recognizes the OS date and Russian Calendar year. However the style correction properly adds 12 days; by giving January 23 NS, the daughter either has calculated in error, or the birth was after midnight of the 10th.)

(Formerly a variety of data were given: Manly Hall had 6/17/1872, 10:42 PM, Tobolsk, Russia in Astrological Review 3/1935. AFA Summer/1968 quotes Kosmobiologie for 7/20/1872, 2:31 AM, Prokovskoie, Russia. PC quotes Brunhubner in his Pluto book for 7/29/1871, 9:45 PM. An article in the Los Angeles Times on 9/25/1978 gave 1871; World Book Encyclopedia gives 1872-1916.)

Starkman quotes [1] in Russian Wikipedia: "Metric book of the Slobodo-Pokrovskaya Bogoroditskaya church of the Tyumen district of the Tobolsk province with the birth record on 09.01.1869 of G.E. Rasputin, an unofficial confessor and favorite of the family of the last emperor of the Russian throne, Nicholas II" and "The name of the baby was, according to the existing tradition, called the child the name of that saint, on whose day he was born or baptized. Day of baptism of Grigory Rasputin - January 10, the day of the commemoration of St Gregory of Nyssa".

He fought his way from the mean streets of Hong Kong to international superstardom. With blazing fists and a burning passion, he became one of the most celebrated kung-fu masters of all time. In classic films like Fists of Fury and Enter the Dragon, he created the martial arts action genre that has become a favorite of moviegoers worldwide. But just as he reached the height of fame, he was struck down by a mysterious ailment or was it the curse that supposedly follows his family? This fascinating program examines the short, meteoric life of Bruce Lee. Exclusive interviews with friends and family including his late son Brandon and extensive footage from home movies, screen-tests and his legendary films help reveal the man behind the myth of the Immortal Dragon.
