I often go walking around the city at night. Many people are afraid of entering the empty streets, but there is a certain beauty in being alone. I mostly walk to get to where I need to go, but will often take longer paths so I have a chance to take in the silence and darkness. Most of the time, I try to find new places along my way and think about what these places mean for the thousands of people living within a few feet from where I walk. Even though I love walking in the city at night, I can’t imagine I’d ever live here.

Although I enjoy walking in the city alone at night, I always have a sense that there is some potential for danger. I like to pretend that it isn’t there, so I listen to music through headphones and walk more quickly. Despite the danger, I continue to walk my long paths to where I need to go. It’s a strange sense of excitement, because I never know what will happen. I always consider the possibilities of every situation as I walk. What happens if someone stops to talk to me? Will they be friendly? Will they be harmful? How do I know when I need to run? What if I should run no matter what? As my thoughts race more, my music gets louder and faster, and I hurry along the way.

I’ve walked the same way many times, and I’ve walked a different way many times, even though my destination is always the same. Sometimes, I like to stop at stores along the way, looking into their windows even though they aren’t open. I imagine what it would be life if I were able to shop in them and afford the expensive clothing in the window. As I was lost in thought, staring at the newest display on 92 nd street and Lexington, I felt a cold wind blow behind me. At first, I thought it was a rat, as I’ve seen countless rodents run from the stacks of garbage bags on the side of the street. However, I caught a glimpse of a shadow that indicated to me otherwise.

I rarely get frightened on my walk, but after seeing whatever this figure might be, I decided to walk the quicker path towards my destination. There seemed to be some degree of safety in being more certain of my arrival, even though the pathways seemedmuch darker than normal. As I walked hurriedly towards my destination, I started to wonder what brought me to this city in the first place. While there was some sort of dangerous excitement to it, I secretly hated it. This is a strange place. And for the first time, my worries that some strange event would happen to me during my wandering came true.

What was that thing? It seemed human, but was almost too quick for this to be true. I lowered my music in order to gain a greater sense of my surroundings, but was unable to gain any helpful evidence. So, I continued to walk, as fast as my legs could carry me. Finally, I hit my half-way point. “I’m almost there I thought!” I started to slow down, with a false sense of security. I bent down to tie my shoe, and felt the air get cold again. I quickly looked backward in shock, and saw the shadow racing towards me. All of a sudden, it hit me and I fell over.

I fell shocked and frozen. It hit me, but I still didn’t know what it was. How is this possible? Whatever, it was just disappeared into the thin air. I was a little more frightened than I was initially and was in no mood to think rationally about this situation. I stood up without fastening my shoelace, and ran as fast as my feet could carry me. Unfortunately, I didn’t get very far before I tripped over my unkempt lace. I hit the ground, landing on my knee, immediately feeling the pain. I wasn’t worried about the injury and was about to start running again when I realized the extent of my pain. I was bleeding all over and did not have the strength to stand up.

Then, the cold appeared again. I knew the shadow was coming. I crawled against the wall of the nearest building and held my knees, helplessly. Out of the corner of my eye, the shadow figure revealed itself. It was a strange shape, nothing I had ever seen before. As it crawled closer and closer into the light, I became more and more frightened. What is this thing? I shivered until it fully revealed itself. The shadow that was following me had finally revealed itself to be a matted street cat. Relieved, I stood up and gave a sigh of relief. I glared at the cat distrustfully, and continued walking towards my destination.

Even though this cat follows me every day, I never seem to remember his diligence for following the smell of my leftover lunch.

GCSE Descriptive Writing-

The click of my heels on the exhausted cobbled path echoed into the distance. This was my meeting point. I was stood on George Street, just south of the town centre, waiting for him to arrive. My eyes winced for a sign of him as increasingly light became sparse. Only an old street lamp could shield me now, its thin rays fighting to reach my eyes, though falling to penetrate the overwhelming darkness.

The proud lamp seemed to have stayed in a time which the rest of the city had forgotten. It was filled a deep blue, so pure that all dirt and grime seemed to reflect off it. The aroma of charm and grace which it breathed into the city made the street seem lit with a light the eyes were not advanced enough to detect. For the first time in a long while, I smiled at its comforting presence. I then remembered where I was. A city, in which decay had become a terminal disease, blackened concrete car parks and weathered flats were the main symptoms.

As I stood at ease beside the lamppost, I could just make out the tinted white concrete which made up the buildings. From what I could see, the systematic street was simply two rows of attached, concrete buildings; the only sort of personality from the town came from an occasional lit window- nothing else. That slight yellow shade which came from artificial light brought back so many memories.

Not long before, Heller City had been drowned in bliss. People would spill into the city in the early hours to their place of work. The sun was glistening. A hum of city noise formed like music to my ears. The clicking of high-heeled shoes blended so tastefully with the hum of car engines, stuck in a whole chorus of other vehicles. The crackling of fish frying at the ‘Watton Café’, a dog barking at Rising Park and a slight gushing breeze formed a background noise which is unnoticeable to the average man, yet impossible to live without.

And I remember the people- Oh! The fantastic people. Some wore elegant pin striped suits, ties brandished with ‘Mr Men’ or other cartoon characters. If I remember correctly, many simply wore a pleasant, refreshing shirt which would

keep them cool in the mid-day sun which was intensified by the large modern glass windows of sky-high buildings.

A cat stabbed at my concentration as it shot past the tip of my toes. The cat fired a suspicious sure glance from her glowing grey eyes and then was off again, lost in the darkness. My instincts told me to move on; perhaps he was not going to turn up. Perhaps I’d have to kill him.  

I began to walk towards where I had been so many years earlier- perhaps he would remember.

I continued to reminisce about the glorious city of which I used to be a part. The noise of the city continued to roar. ‘Watton café’ was just right of the town hall. To most people, it was considered a lavishly furnished ‘greasy Joe’s’; to me it has heaven. For £1.50 you could get yourself a carefully grilled bacon sandwich, draped in iceberg lettuce and dressed in a fine mayonnaise which could finish even the most determined of people’s dieting plans. And that is just the food- I haven’t even begun to mention the grand décor.

Thrones were used as seats and robes used as curtains; Watton café would have made a pauper feel like a king. Upon the walls lay eloquent pictures of various nobility dining in their palaces, feasting on dishes that matched the victuals of Watton café to a tea.

Watton café was a social centre; men and women of all shapes and sizes would meet and greet creating long term friendships and even romance. I had once spied a man and woman meeting after Church on a Sunday. The aged man sported a hefty grey beard and a pair of broad sunglasses. The lady holding his hand looked plastered to perfection, her face clearly fabricated in a modern age-defying substance. Underneath the cream and surgery though, it was no secret that there was a frail old woman. Her hand must have been given a disproportionate amount of attention as they sagged in the café lighting.

On one portrait a man sat at a long, brown, majestic, polished table, filled with goods such as grapes, turkey and bread. His long curled hair accentuated his imposing, rigid nose. The man wore what looked like a red velvet duvet. The portrait inspired all who saw it, bringing peace and virtue to every man and

woman who entered the café. It was a constant reminder of what a proud city Haller city was.

I was sitting in the ‘modern’ Watton café on a clammy wooden bench which felt to have aged along with the rest of the city. Watton café had not been open in years, which was obvious from the removed windows and weathered walls. Only the outdoor furnishings remained; another clue which has never been explored into why Heller city was left to die. It is my job to find out how it happened.

There are some lovely turns of phrase here. I especially like, “the air tasted clean, as if it had just been loosed upon the world.” That’s exactly what clean, crisp winter air feels like.

Flickering lights, white, reds and blue-a dazing array of colours that fits together perfectly like a jigsaw puzzle. Monolithic towers, painted structures. Each corner throbing with activity. Fumes of cigars and cigarettes fills the air in a rush to blend in with the fumes of vehicles. Neon lights and advertisement boards that are brighter than Times Square. Blazing music everywhere.Deafening monotone honks. Wafts of fast food restaurant smells surrounded by an alley full of dustbins. With this smell hovering in the high humidity, the air felt thick with a scent of hot grease a strong yet intriguing smell,giving me a feel of malicious fire blazing my bare skin like a turkey on thanksgiving. Unfamiliar faces. Familiar faces.Suffocation which have turned into a daily routine, chaotic-like but calming.

Everyday, around the same time, no matter what, a strange phenomenon occurs. The big flame of burning light and piercing rays drifts to just below the horizon of where the eye can see, stops as though saying goodbye, allowing us to revel in its last heat, before eventually disappearing. Rapidly, the sky fills with a hollow blackness, covering the world in a dark mystery. Just like moments of realisation, glinting lights appear in this hollow void, creating a path for travellers and wanderers alike. This phenomenon creates a night scene. (Last sentence is slightly vague.)

Scientifically, stars are burning rocks, destined for death once the last burning flame goes out, but to wide-eyed children and wise optimists alike ( L) these lumps of rocks signify hope in the dark shadows of the night time. They prevent the monsters from creeping their way out from the great divide between the bed and the dreaky (M ) floor or stop the ghosts from within (L )finally bursting free. However, every so often a massive shadow casts itself over our world, blocking out these hopeful flames and bringing with it loud claps of thunder and the unfriendly flashes of lightning to cloak the monsters and allow them to creep into the night. (Is this a storm? Or cloudy skies? Unclear.) These dreaded nights end only with an ominous silence and the uncertainty of what comes next until we once again see the misty light of dawn.

The silence of the night however, is never silent. Within it lie the gentle snores of the content settler, the tossing of turning of a lost soul, the lone bark of a dog convinced of the ghosts and the faint laughter of a blossoming love. The silent commentary of a sports fanatic is drowned out by the screams of a teetering relationship reaching its final tether. ( Strong section.) The pots and pans of a feast( L) of the ding of the microwave signalling the readiness of a late night snack. Each of these noises fills the silence, making a scene only to get lost in the hollow void of the night. (L )

Amongst this silent racket, a single train horn blares in the distance, carrying its load to his final destination- the night shift. He is dressed in black, a colour meant to convey his strength but only losing its wearer in the night. Another dreamer, lured by the conceivable and swallowed by the void. However, tonight would be different, tonight would leave his name upon the lips of all those like him. Tonight would be the night that a young boy would be lead astray by that same allure that brought that man to the night shift. This lure would force a hammer into one hand and a gun into the other, all the while silently calling him towards that jeweller’s window. Whispering at first, the call getting louder and louder until a smash breaks its call. RING, SMASH, CRACK! Silence fills the air as the footsteps of that young boy disappear into the night. The night that claimed the soul of that lone night-shift worker and the innocence of that boy . (I think this is a robbery description. It is not as clear as it should be. Is it about him losing his soul?  Who is the robber? The night shift worker- is he the victim or perpetrator?)

This dark night would hide their secret and the secrets and lies of so many others. Its ( L) cloak would veil the fraudsters, the adulterers and the hypocrites alike, looking the other way as under the noses of all those slumbering, as they make their beds. Their cackles and shrieks at their corruption, pulling them closer and closer to their dreams, dreams that can only happen at night. ( Strong section.)

A gangster’s dream is not the only dream that comes to fruition in the darkness of the night. The inky sky’s blank canvas brings alive the dreams of all those who slumber, from their wildest fantasies to the most sinister of nightmares, sending them down a spiral that most find hard to return from. (L) Bright images fill their minds, flashing before their eyes, tempting or taunting them. These seconds of images fill a whole night of slumber and a whole lifetime of unhappiness as each morning, as we wake, we desperately scramble to remember our dreams. ( Might benefit from specifics or illustrations.)

Under the cover of darkness, on ( M) other dream is coming to light. A different dream. Lit by a dim lamp, a student silently reads and rereads willing the words on a page to imprint themselves on the back of their mind. A day spent working leads to a night of tirelessly chasing. The lack of illumination leading to decades worth of knowledge on creation. A different canvas providing a space to fill with the dreams of what’s next, of great inventions and realisations. Of the future. A young generation finding its way under the cover of the night.

However, like clockwork this superb mystery comes to an end as the sun rises harshly lifting the veil of darkness and revealing all of its flaws. Under its ( L ) light, the monsters become black cloaks, the faux silence a quick relief before the chaos, the lure now a life sentence, the tireless work with dark circles under their eyes, the dreamers now criminals and those once slumbering, now living with distant memories.

Those who believe the moon landing exists fear the appearance of this hollowed void every night, masking reality, whilst all dreamers know that on the blank canvas of a night scene, anything can happen.

This is a descriptive composition, very much in the genre. Some very strong sections, you are really creating a detailed night scene.

I feel it would benefit from more physical description in places.

Another essay by the same title. A little bit less impressive because the plot is too vague in places. This author also gets lost in her tenses – a very common mistake. See if you can spot it.

The heat of the campfire struggles to penetrate the frosty air. It crackles and sparks in the silence, its flickering flames casting twisted shapes on the trunks of the surrounding wood, dipping and dancing with each breath of wind in the still night. The air is tangible, as though you could reach out and feel it flow over your skin like icy water. The meagre cloth you huddle in, once plush and warm is now threadbare in patches. The ends are unravelling and frayed with age, making it barely long enough to cover your bare legs. Still, you wrap yourself in its cocoon of warmth, consisting more of fragile memories than material.

You tear your eyes away from the mesmerising dance of the fire, casting them along the jagged edge of the ring of light. The cool damp air of the woods beckons, yet you find yourself transfixed, as if your own feet were rooted in the ground. You absentmindedly fiddle with a loose thread on the tattered blanket. It threatens to drag you back to another night, another fire. Weariness begins to set in and, unable to resist any longer you allow yourself to be immersed in memories.

The echo of an owl’s shriek rouses you, and you slowly come to your senses. Through bleary eyes you see a vast expanse before you. Gone is the claustrophobic clearing, replaced by the glint of fading rays upon the glassy surface of a lake below you. The sound of soft ripples lapping at the foot of the steep drop rise to your ears as you peer cautiously over the edge. It reveals a reflection of the sky, showing the clear distinction between night and day. The bright, fiery hues of reds and yellows bleed into cool indigos and navy, bringing with them the comforting blanket of darkness.

Here everything is still, only the growing brightness of the stars betrays the passing of time. A sharp gust of wind sends you reeling back from the ledge. The sudden exposure causes a rush of blood to your pale cheeks. You cup your stiff fingers over your mouth,deeply inhaling the thick, muggy air created by the recycled breath.Lowering them, you fill your lungs with the cold, crisp air of the oncoming night.Turning your attention back to your hands, you rub them together, trying to force blood flow back through the numb skin. Your hands burn as they begin to warm, yet you continue the action, as if you could create a spark simply from the friction between your palms.

Satisfied, you swivel slowly to take in your surroundings. An arc of dense forest encapsulates you, leaving you no choice of path. The ground is littered with cracked twigs and fallen foliage. A once neat pile of dead leaves is scattered haphazardly across the clearing. Your eyes streaming from the now howling gale, you tentatively approach the forest’s boundary, seeking shelter from the bitter wind.

Parting the first branches leads you to another world. The night is alive with the scurrying and pattering of paws.The unnatural sound of leaves crunching under your feet resonates loudly in the otherwise undisturbed peace. Ferns seem to cling to your skin as you lightly tread through the brambles and bushes. The sense of watchful eyes eyes amongst the blackness follows you, tracking your every move. A flicker(beam?) of moonlight catches a dew-covered web, an intricate trap built with caution and precision. You pause and watch with awe, a worthy contrast to the honk of horns and echoes of laughs off the dense concrete jungle you are accustomed to.

You come across an ancient oak, its gnarled branches seeming to salute you as they creak in the breeze. You run your fingers over its rough bark, feeling the grooves and hollows formed long before you ever walked the earth. The grain provokes a fleeting memory. The faded sound of soft laughter echoes eerily, from a long forgotten time. With your eyes closed, you can almost trace the outline of the shallow engraving you carved, hoping to leave your own mark behind. A sharp jolt of pain reminds you of the power nature can have, both in life and death. Sharp pin pricks of tears escape your eyes as you extract the jagged splinter from your palm. A single drop of blood stains your pale skin. The air hangs heavily around you, holding its breath. This place is sacred. It should never have been disturbed. The serenity broken, you are overwhelmed with a primal instinct to flee. You spin around, disoriented as the trees seem to close in on you. Blindly picking a direction, you stumble through the maze, fallen twigs cracking beneath your hurried steps.

The woods become sparse, the vivid colours replaced by dull tones of brown. The sudden open space startles you.You hunch over and scoop up a handful of the dry earth, clenching your fist as it crumbles through your fingers. You watch as it accumulates in a pile of dust on the cracked earth, mocking a timer which had clearly run out long ago. The hair on the back of your neck rises and a shiver runs down your spine as you stare at the seemingly never ending plain of scorched earth.The moon is eclipsed by growing clouds, leaving only starlight to guide you. Craning your neck, you gaze at the freckled night sky. The stars are scattered like dying embers. Slowly, they seem to fade from view, plunging you into total darkness.

The fire has long since been extinguished when your eyes flicker open. Your back aches, pins and needles running up your limbs as you rise to your feet. You remove the blanket from your shoulders, draping it over the dead hearth. There’s a sense of finality to the action as you turn on your heel and leave the scene for the last time, a smile on your face and a tear in your eye. Behind you, a bronze memorial plaque glints from its position, embedded in a boulder.

Nightwalking: a subversive stroll through the city streets

In the dead of night, in spite of the electric lights, London seems an alien city, especially if you are walking through it alone.

In the more sequestered streets – once the pubs are closed, and at a distance from the 24-hour convenience stores – the sodium gleam of the street lamps, or the flickering striplight from a sleepy minicab stand, offers little consolation. There are alleys and street corners and shop entrances where the darkness appears to collect in a solid mass. There are secluded squares where, to take a haunting line from a poem by Shelley , night makes “a weird sound of its own stillness”. There are buildings, monuments and statues that, at a distance, and in the absence of people, pulsate mysteriously in the sepulchral light. There are foxes that slope and trot across the road as you interrupt their attempts to pillage scraps from upended bins.

And, from time to time, there are the faintly sinister silhouettes of other solitary individuals – as threatened by your presence, no doubt, as you are by theirs. “However efficiently artificial light annihilates the difference between night and day,” Al Alvarez has remarked, “it never wholly eliminates the primitive suspicion that night people are up to no good.”

It is easy to feel disoriented in the city at the dead of night, especially if you are tired from roaming its distances, dreamily or desperately somnambulant. For in the darkness, above all perhaps in familiar or routine places, everything acquires a subtly different form or volume.

Ford Madox Ford , in The Soul of London , lamented a century ago that, “little by little, the Londoner comes to forget that his London is built upon real earth: he forgets that under the pavements there are hills, forgotten water courses, springs, and marshlands”. It is not quite the same at night. At 2am, in the empty streets, no longer fighting against the traffic of cars and commuters, the solitary pedestrian’s feet begin to recall the “real earth”. In the abstracted, monochromatic conditions of the nighttime, it becomes more apparent that a sloping road curves over the sleeping form of a hill and tracks the course of an underground stream. The city is at its most earthly and unearthly at night.

A prehistoric landscape comes to seem more palpable beneath the pavements of the city. And in this half-familiar environment it is difficult to eliminate entirely the archaic conviction that, as for our ancestors, the night itself remains ominous, threatening. Residues of a primal fear of the dark begin to trouble you.

The nighttime city is another city. Rhapsodising the public parks of the French metropolis in Paris Peasant (1926), the surrealist Louis Aragon commented that “night gives these absurd places a sense of not knowing their own identity”. It is a point that applies to all aspects of the city’s architecture or terrain. The nighttime self, moreover, is another self. It too is less certain of its own identity.

Who walks alone in the streets at night? The sad, the mad, the bad. The lost, the lonely. The sleepless, the homeless. All the city’s internal exiles. The night has always been the time for daylight’s dispossessed – the dissident, the different. Walking alone at night in the city by both men and women has, since time immemorial, been interpreted as a sign of moral, social or spiritual dereliction.

Solitary women, because of a long history of discrimination and patriarchal oppression, have been especially susceptible to this sort of suspicion. If women appear on the streets of the city at night alone they are commonly portrayed as either predators, in the form of prostitutes, or predatees – the potential victims of sexual assault. In both cases, they are denied a right to the city at night.

The historian Joachim Schlör has pointed out that, in terms of the freedom to inhabit the nocturnal city, “women’s needs and wishes are not fundamentally different from men’s”, since for both it is a case of entering it and circulating inside it freely and independently – “through the whole city, during the whole night, and not just in certain spatial and temporal reserves”. But he has rightly insisted that, historically, “men’s freedom of movement has [had] a real restrictive effect on that of women”.

If solitary men on the streets at night have exercised a right to the city denied to solitary women, then they too have often been identified or represented as pariahs. People who walk about at night with no obvious reason to do so, whether male or female, have attracted suspicion, opprobrium and legal recrimination from patriarchs, politicians, priests and others in authority, including the police, for thousands of years. In 1285, Edward I introduced a specific “nightwalker statute” in order to police the movement of plebeian people – especially migrants, vagrants and prostitutes – after the 9pm curfew. But long after this statute became impossible to implement, because of the rise of “nightlife”, the authorities continued to construe nightwalking as deviant.

Today, more than ever, solitary walking at night in the streets of the city does not necessarily mean deviant movement. It may well be perfectly legitimate, purposeful. Contemporary capitalist society requires what Jonathan Crary has identified as the despoliation of sleep in the interests of maximising the individual’s potential – both as a producer and a consumer – for generating profit. The political economy of the night, in this dispensation, means that plenty of people have to commute after dark, sometimes on foot, sometimes across considerable distances.

This is the daily, or nightly, reality of post-circadian capitalism, as it might be called. For the city’s army of nocturnal workers, many of whom are recent immigrants forced to perform the least popular forms of labour, travelling at night is in effect travailing at night. Sex workers and the police (or its precursors) have, for their part, always had to patrol pavements at night for professional reasons. So have street-cleaners and others employed to collect and dispose of the city’s waste.

Not all walking at night, then, is nightwalking. But most forms of solitary walking at night are nonetheless tainted, sometimes faintly with dubious moral or social associations. Indeed, even apparently purposeful walking in the city at night is not exempt from the assumption that it is suspicious. To be alone in the streets, even if one walks rapidly, determinedly, is to invite the impression that one is on the run, either from oneself or from another.

The late Chilean novelist Roberto Bolaño alludes to these conditions of being in the night – those of the haunted and the hunted – in a reference to the life, or half-life, of the city “at an hour when the only people out walking [are] two opposite types: those running out of time and those with time to burn”. In fact, these types are not really opposite: many people who are running out of time or resources, paradoxically, have time to burn. This contradictory state, of idling and hastening at once, is a comparatively common experience. It is even more potent on the streets at night.

To use a Dickensian phrase, nightwalking is a matter of “going astray” in the streets of the city after dark. Dickens is the great heroic and neurotic nightwalker of the 19th century. In 1860, in the guise of the Uncommercial Traveller, he made a crucial distinction between two kinds of walking: one that is “straight on end to a definite goal at a round pace”; another that is “objectless, loitering, and purely vagabond”. If the point of the first kind of walking is to travel from one point to another, the point of the second is that there is no point at all. Its purpose is its purposelessness. Nightwalking, according to this logic, is pointless. It is uncommercial.

In an economy in which time, including nighttime, is money, wandering the streets after dark – when most people are sleeping in order to prepare themselves for the next day’s labour – is in symbolic terms subversive. In the aberrant and deviant form celebrated by Dickens in the 19th century, and surreptitiously practised by innumerable others before and since, nightwalking is quintessentially objectless, loitering and vagabond.

If you’re looking for guidance on how to describe a busy street, read on to learn about 10 words you can use to describe a bustling road.

Somewhere that’s very busy and contains rushed activity.

“Annie pushed down the hectic old street. She was surprised that such an aged avenue could still fit so many people.”

“As the sun rose, the street some became hectic . People rushed about completing their morning tasks as quickly as possible.”

How it Adds Description

“Hectic” shows that the street is busy because of rushed activity, such as people going to work or quickly running errands. This is a great way to set the scene in your books, as it paints a clear picture of the street’s atmosphere. Curious characters might be drawn to the “hectic” street, as they may enjoy people watching or simply being in the presence of others.

2. Overwhelming

Something that affects people very strongly.

“After five minutes on Oxford Street , Caroline was ready to leave. It was way too overwhelming for a peaceful stroll.”

“The mayor always avoided the main road. He found it a little overwhelming , especially in rush hour.

Sometimes busy streets leave people feeling “overwhelmed.” Therefore, you can use the adjective “overwhelming” to emphasize how busy the street is and that it’s too much for your characters. Typically, anxious, or stressed characters will be more affected by “overwhelming” or busy places. Some may even avoid busy streets completely because of their negative effect.

Somewhere full of people.

“He pushed his way through the crowded street, desperately trying to follow the man with the red hat.”

“Emily glanced at the crowded street and shuddered. There was no way she was going to fight through the mob of people.”

You can use the word “crowded” to illustrate a street is busy because it’s full of people. This means there’s little space left on the street, so characters might have a difficult time passing through it. This could leave them stuck in one place, which might make them feel stressed or anxious.

Something that looks expensive or grand .

“The opulent avenue impressed visitors from all over the world.”

“The woman strolled down the opulent street, admiring the ornate houses and bright colors as she walked.”

If your street features busy design and aesthetics, you could refer to it as “opulent.” This adjective describes a place that’s extremely luxurious with lots of riches to look at, perfect for a street that’s busy in terms of style — rather than people. Characters may flock to an “opulent” street for fun or inspiration, especially if they’re from a poorer neighborhood.

5. Bustling

Somewhere that’s full of activity or busy people.

“The bustling streets of New York were always a shock to tourists.”

“Tom followed the bustling streets all the way to the central train station. It wasn’t a peaceful journey, but there was a lot to see.”

You can show how many people are on your busy street by using the word “bustling.” This shows that your setting is difficult to navigate due to the sheer volume of people. It can also show your setting is a very populous area, and this can give your reader more context about the novel’s world.

6. Claustrophobic

Somewhere that leaves people feeling uncomfortable due to crowding or restriction.

“The young girl swallowed her discomfort and ducked and dived through the people on the claustrophobic street.”

“Adam felt the claustrophobic street closing in on him. He couldn’t handle the amount of people and the lack of space.”

“Claustrophobic” offers a negative portrayal of a busy street, as the adjective is linked to feeling uncomfortable or unhappy due to a crowded or restricted place. This emphasizes your character’s discomfort, and it shows the reader that they dislike busy places. Other characters may rush to help them, especially if they’re showing signs of physical stress due to the “claustrophobic” location.

7. Energetic

Somewhere or someone that has a lot of energy , physical movement, or power.

“The tall woman stood on the balcony and watched the energetic street below. It was captivating.”

“The energetic street hummed with the busy footsteps of civilians.”

You can use “energetic” to personify the street and imply that there are a lot of people there. Your characters might find an “energetic” street fascinating if they come from a small town, as they’re not likely used to seeing so many people in one place.

8. Dramatic

Somewhere that’s impressive or exciting .

“The dramatic street never slept. There was always something going on.”

“Sheila sulked on the side of the dramatic street, wishing she was part of the action.”

When a place is very busy and has lots of action, it can be described as “dramatic.” This shows that the action is more lively than usual. For example, there might be fights or grand displays of love. Eclectic characters might be drawn to this kind of setting as they love to be involved in or watch public spectacles.

Somewhere that feels extreme or severe.

“The street jostled with people, and there was barely space to move. It was an intense setting, but Taylor enjoyed the atmosphere.”

“As the New Year’s Day parade swooped through the street, the area became intense and hard to navigate.”

If a busy street isn’t pleasant or feels extreme, “intense” is an apt adjective. This shows that the setting might be shocking or overwhelming for characters, and this might make them try to escape or leave for some respite.

10. Popular

Somewhere liked or enjoyed by many people.

“The popular street attracted hordes of people, but no one cared about the crowds. They just wanted to bask in the street’s cool atmosphere.”

“Alice looked at the densely packed road. It was obviously popular with the youth of today.”

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
