Assignment Operators in C

In C language, the assignment operator stores a certain value in an already declared variable. A variable in C can be assigned the value in the form of a literal, another variable, or an expression.

The value to be assigned forms the right-hand operand, whereas the variable to be assigned should be the operand to the left of the " = " symbol, which is defined as a simple assignment operator in C.

In addition, C has several augmented assignment operators.

The following table lists the assignment operators supported by the C language −

Simple Assignment Operator (=)

The = operator is one of the most frequently used operators in C. As per the ANSI C standard, all the variables must be declared in the beginning. Variable declaration after the first processing statement is not allowed.

You can declare a variable to be assigned a value later in the code, or you can initialize it at the time of declaration.

You can use a literal, another variable, or an expression in the assignment statement.

Once a variable of a certain type is declared, it cannot be assigned a value of any other type. In such a case the C compiler reports a type mismatch error.

In C, the expressions that refer to a memory location are called "lvalue" expressions. A lvalue may appear as either the left-hand or right-hand side of an assignment.

On the other hand, the term rvalue refers to a data value that is stored at some address in memory. A rvalue is an expression that cannot have a value assigned to it which means an rvalue may appear on the right-hand side but not on the left-hand side of an assignment.

Variables are lvalues and so they may appear on the left-hand side of an assignment. Numeric literals are rvalues and so they may not be assigned and cannot appear on the left-hand side. Take a look at the following valid and invalid statements −

Augmented Assignment Operators

In addition to the = operator, C allows you to combine arithmetic and bitwise operators with the = symbol to form augmented or compound assignment operator. The augmented operators offer a convenient shortcut for combining arithmetic or bitwise operation with assignment.

For example, the expression "a += b" has the same effect of performing "a + b" first and then assigning the result back to the variable "a".

An operator is a symbol that operates on a value or a variable. For example: + is an operator to perform addition.

C has a wide range of operators to perform various operations.

C Arithmetic Operators

An arithmetic operator performs mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc on numerical values (constants and variables).

Example 1: Arithmetic Operators

The operators + , - and * computes addition, subtraction, and multiplication respectively as you might have expected.

In normal calculation, 9/4 = 2.25 . However, the output is 2 in the program.

It is because both the variables a and b are integers. Hence, the output is also an integer. The compiler neglects the term after the decimal point and shows answer 2 instead of 2.25 .

The modulo operator % computes the remainder. When a=9 is divided by b=4 , the remainder is 1 . The % operator can only be used with integers.

Suppose a = 5.0 , b = 2.0 , c = 5 and d = 2 . Then in C programming,

C Increment and Decrement Operators

C programming has two operators increment ++ and decrement -- to change the value of an operand (constant or variable) by 1.

Increment ++ increases the value by 1 whereas decrement -- decreases the value by 1. These two operators are unary operators, meaning they only operate on a single operand.

A relational operator checks the relationship between two operands. If the relation is true, it returns 1; if the relation is false, it returns value 0.

During computation, mathematical operations like: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc are converted to bit-level which makes processing faster and saves power.

Besides the simple assignment operator, C supports compound assignment operators. A compound assignment operator performs the operation specified by the additional operator and then assigns the result to the left operand.

The following example uses a compound-assignment operator (+=):

The operand on the left side of the assignment operator must be a variable and operand on the right-hand side must be a constant, variable or expression. Here are some examples:

The precedence of the assignment operator is lower than all the operators we have discussed so far and it associates from right to left.

We can also assign the same value to multiple variables at once.

Compound Assignment Operator #

Assignment operations that use the old value of a variable to compute its new value are called Compound Assignment.

Consider the following two statements:

Here the second statement adds 5 to the existing value of x . This value is then assigned back to x . Now, the new value of x is 105 .

To handle such operations more succinctly, C provides a special operator called Compound Assignment operator.

The general format of compound assignment operator is as follows:

where op can be any of the arithmetic operators ( + , - , * , / , % ). The above statement is functionally equivalent to the following:

Note : In addition to arithmetic operators, op can also be >> (right shift), << (left shift), | (Bitwise OR), & (Bitwise AND), ^ (Bitwise XOR). We haven't discussed these operators yet.

After evaluating the expression, the op operator is then applied to the result of the expression and the current value of the variable (on the RHS). The result of this operation is then assigned back to the variable (on the LHS). Let's take some examples: The statement:

is equivalent to x = x + 5; or x = x + (5); .

Similarly, the statement:

is equivalent to x = x * 2; or x = x * (2); .

Since, expression on the right side of op operator is evaluated first, the statement:

is equivalent to x = x * (y + 1) .

The precedence of compound assignment operators are same and they associate from right to left (see the precedence table ).

Assignment and compound assignment operators are binary operators that modify the variable to their left using the value to their right.

The simple assignment operator expressions have the form

Assignment performs implicit conversion from the value of rhs to the type of lhs and then replaces the value in the object designated by lhs with the converted value of rhs .

Assignment also returns the same value as what was stored in lhs (so that expressions such as a = b = c are possible). The value category of the assignment operator is non-lvalue (so that expressions such as ( a = b ) = c are invalid).

rhs and lhs must satisfy one of the following:

  • both lhs and rhs have compatible struct or union type, or..
  • rhs must be implicitly convertible to lhs , which implies
  • both lhs and rhs have arithmetic types , in which case lhs may be volatile -qualified or atomic (since C11)
  • both lhs and rhs have pointer to compatible (ignoring qualifiers) types, or one of the pointers is a pointer to void, and the conversion would not add qualifiers to the pointed-to type. lhs may be volatile or restrict (since C99) -qualified or atomic (since C11) .
  • lhs is a (possibly qualified or atomic (since C11) ) pointer and rhs is a null pointer constant such as NULL or a nullptr_t value (since C23)

If rhs and lhs overlap in memory (e.g. they are members of the same union), the behavior is undefined unless the overlap is exact and the types are compatible .

Although arrays are not assignable, an array wrapped in a struct is assignable to another object of the same (or compatible) struct type.

The side effect of updating lhs is sequenced after the value computations, but not the side effects of lhs and rhs themselves and the evaluations of the operands are, as usual, unsequenced relative to each other (so the expressions such as i = ++ i ; are undefined)

Assignment strips extra range and precision from floating-point expressions (see FLT_EVAL_METHOD ).

In C++, assignment operators are lvalue expressions, not so in C.

The expression lhs @= rhs is exactly the same as lhs = lhs @ ( rhs ) , except that lhs is evaluated only once.

The value present on the right side of the operator must have the same data type as that of the variable present on the left side. In any other case, the compiler raises an error.

C - Bitwise OR and assignment operator

The Bitwise OR and assignment operator (|=) assigns the first operand a value equal to the result of Bitwise OR operation of two operands.

(x |= y) is equivalent to (x = x | y)

The Bitwise OR operator (|) is a binary operator which takes two bit patterns of equal length and performs the logical OR operation on each pair of corresponding bits. It returns 1 if either or both bits at the same position are 1, else returns 0.

The example below describes how bitwise OR operator works:

Example: Find largest power of 2 less than or equal to given number

Consider an integer 1000. In the bit-wise format, it can be written as 1111101000. However, all bits are not written here. A complete representation will be 32 bit representation as given below:

Performing N |= (N>>i) operation, where i = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 will change all right side bit to 1. When applied on 1000, the result in 32 bit representation is given below:

Adding one to this result and then right shifting the result by one place will give largest power of 2 less than or equal to 1000.

The below code will calculate the largest power of 2 less than or equal to given number.

I will first explain what operators are in programming and list the different types of operators available in C.

Then, you will learn the role logical operators have and how to use them with the help of code examples along the way.

Let's get into it!

What Is An Operator in Computer Programming?

In computer programing, an operator is a character, symbol, keyword, or combination of those. It determines what action gets performed on one or more operands.

An operand is an individual data item that gets manipulated by the operator.

Each high-level programming language defines these built-in characters and uses them to tell the compiler to perform arithmetic, relational or logical operations that manipulate data items and then return a final result.

What Are The Different Types of Operators in C Programming?

In C programming, operators fall into one of three categories:

  • Unary operators
  • Binary operators
  • Ternary operators

Unary operators operate on a single operand. Some of the unary operators in C are:

  • Arithmetic operators such as the increment operator( ++ ), which increments the value of the operand by 1 . And the decrement operator( -- ), which decrements the value of the operand by 1 .
  • Logical operators like the NOT( ! ) operator. This operator reverses the logical value of the operand – it changes true to false and false to true .
  • Bitwise operators like the NOT( ~ ) operator, which changes each 0 bit to 1 and each 1 bit to 0 .

Binary operators operate on two operands. Some of the binary operators in C are:

  • Arithmetic operators ( +, -, *, /, % ). These operators perform mathematical calculations on numerical data such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and finding the remainder.
  • Equality/Relational operators ( ==, !=, >, <, >=, <= ). These operators compare two values and determine if one operand is greater than, less than, equal to, or not equal to the other operand.
  • Logical/Conditional operators such as the AND( && ) and OR( || ) operators.
  • Bitwise operators ( (&, |, ^, <<, >> ), which treat data items as a sequence of bits (that is, 0 s and 1 s).
  • Assignment operators ( =, +=, -=, *=, /=, %= ), which assign a specific value to a variable.

The Ternary operator ( ?: ) operates on three operands. The general syntax looks something similar to the following:

The ternary operator is a conditional operator you can use as a shorthand for an if..else statement. It performs comparisons and returns a result.

What Is the Role of Logical Operators in C Programming?

You will see logical operators commonly used in conditional statements (such as if..else statements) since they aid in decision making – they determine what action should take place and what code should run next based on conditions you set.

You combine logical operators with one or multiple conditions to create a logical expression.

The logical operators evaluate the logical expression and return a result.

The result is always a Boolean value. A Boolean value determines whether the expression is true or false .

There are three logical operators in C programming: logical AND( && ), logical OR( || ), and logical NOT ( ! ).

Let's go into more detail on each one in the following sections.

How to Use the AND (&&) Logical Operator in C Programming

The logical AND( && ) operator checks whether all operands are true – the result is true only when all operands are true .

Here is the truth table for the AND( && ) operator when you are working with two operands:

Something to note here is that, when the first operand is false , the second operand is not evaluated.

Let's look at an example: The result of (10 == 10) && (20 == 20) is true because both operands are true – (10 == 10) is true and (20 == 20) is true .

Let's look at another example: The result of (10 == 20) && (20 == 20) is false because one of the operands is false – in this case, the first operand is false , so the second operand doesn't get evaluated.

Now, let's see how you can use the && operator in an if statement:

In the example above, the output is Both numbers are greater than 10 because the condition a > 10 && b > 10 is satisfied.

Both a > 10 and b > 10 are true , so the result is true .

If either a or b did not satisfy the condition, then there would be no output in the console since I have not specified an else condition.

How to Use the OR (||) Logical Operator in C Programming

The logical OR( || ) operator checks whether one of the operands is true – the result is true if at least one of the operands is true .

Here is the truth table for the OR( || ) operator when you are working with two operands:

Note that with the OR ( || ) operator, if the first operand is true , then the second operator is not evaluated.

Let's look at an example: The result of (10 == 20) || (20 == 20) is true because at least one of the operands is true , in this case, it is the second operand, even if the first operand is false .

Let's look at another example: The result of (20 == 20) || (10 == 20) is true because one of the operands is true – in this case, since the first operand is true , the second one is not evaluated.

Now, let's see how you can use the OR ( || ) operator in an if statement:

In the example above, the output is At least one of the numbers is greater than 10 because the condition a > 10 || b > 10 is satisfied – at least one of the operands is true .

The first condition, a > 10 , is true , so the result is true .

If both a and b were false , there would be no output.

How to Use the NOT (!) Logical Operator in C Programming

The logical NOT( ! ) operator negates the operand – that is, it returns the opposite of the operand.

If the operand is true , it returns false .

And if it is false , it returns true .

Here is the truth table for the NOT( ! ) operator:

Let's look at an example: The result of !(10 == 10) is false .

The condition 10 == 10 is true , but the ! operator negates it.

And let's look at another example: The result of !(10 == 20) is true .

The condition 10 == 20 is false, but the ! operator negates it.

Now, check the example below for how you can use the NOT( ! ) operator in an if statement:

The output is a is greater than b because the condition a > b is true .

However, if you used the NOT( ! ) operator, the condition is no longer true , so there would be no output:

The compound-assignment operators combine the simple-assignment operator with another binary operator. Compound-assignment operators perform the operation specified by the additional operator, then assign the result to the left operand. For example, a compound-assignment expression such as

expression1 += expression2

can be understood as

expression1 = expression1 + expression2

However, the compound-assignment expression is not equivalent to the expanded version because the compound-assignment expression evaluates expression1 only once, while the expanded version evaluates expression1 twice: in the addition operation and in the assignment operation.

The operands of a compound-assignment operator must be of integral or floating type. Each compound-assignment operator performs the conversions that the corresponding binary operator performs and restricts the types of its operands accordingly. The addition-assignment ( += ) and subtraction-assignment ( -= ) operators can also have a left operand of pointer type, in which case the right-hand operand must be of integral type. The result of a compound-assignment operation has the value and type of the left operand.

In this example, a bitwise-inclusive-AND operation is performed on n and MASK , and the result is assigned to n . The manifest constant MASK is defined with a #define preprocessor directive.

Python Arithmetic operators are used to perform basic mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication , and division .

In Python 3.x the result of division is a floating-point while in Python 2.x division of 2 integers was an integer. To obtain an integer result in Python 3.x floored (// integer) is used.

In Python programming language Division Operators allow you to divide two numbers and return a quotient, i.e., the first number or number at the left is divided by the second number or number at the right and returns the quotient. 

There are two types of division operators: 

Float division

  • Floor division

The quotient returned by this operator is always a float number, no matter if two numbers are integers. For example:

Example: The code performs division operations and prints the results. It demonstrates that both integer and floating-point divisions return accurate results. For example, ’10/2′ results in ‘5.0’ , and ‘-10/2’ results in ‘-5.0’ .

Integer division( Floor division)

The quotient returned by this operator is dependent on the argument being passed. If any of the numbers is float, it returns output in float. It is also known as Floor division because, if any number is negative, then the output will be floored. For example:

Example: The code demonstrates integer (floor) division operations using the // in Python operators . It provides results as follows: ’10//3′ equals ‘3’ , ‘-5//2’ equals ‘-3’ , ‘ 5.0//2′ equals ‘2.0’ , and ‘-5.0//2’ equals ‘-3.0’ . Integer division returns the largest integer less than or equal to the division result.

The precedence of Arithmetic Operators in Python is as follows:

  • P – Parentheses
  • E – Exponentiation
  • M – Multiplication (Multiplication and division have the same precedence)
  • D – Division
  • A – Addition (Addition and subtraction have the same precedence)
  • S – Subtraction

The modulus of Python operators helps us extract the last digit/s of a number. For example:

  • x % 10 -> yields the last digit
  • x % 100 -> yield last two digits
