एक पिता ही पारिवारिक जिम्मेदारियों के साथ-साथ अपनी नैतिक जिम्मेदारी भी निभाता है. एक पिता अपने आप को बाहर से कठोर दिखाता है लेकिन उसके जितना दयालु और अच्छा कोई और नहीं हो सकता. वह हमेशा अपनी खुशियों को नजरअंदाज करके परिवार की खुशी के बारे में सोचता है.

मेरे पिताजी समय के बड़े पाबंद हैं और उनका दैनिक जीवान भी बड़ा ही अनुशासित है। उनका कहना है की अनुशासन से चलने वाला व्यक्ति कभी असफल नहीं होता। घर के कई कामों में भी वो माँ का हाथ बँटाते हैं, उनका कहना है कि कोई भी काम बड़ा या छोटा नहीं होता।

पापा मेरी हर खुशी का ख्याल रखते हैं, भले ही वो अपने लिए एक पैसा ना खर्च करें लेकिन मुझे हर चीज लेकर देते हैं। जब भी उन्हें समय मिलता है वो हमें बाहर घुमाने जरूर ले जाते हैं।

एक आदर्श बेटा, एक आदर्श पति और एक आदर्श पिता – ये सारे रूप मुझे मेरे पिताजी में दिखाई देते हैं। मैं भी अपने जीवन में उन्हीं के बताए हुये रास्ते पर चलकर उनके जैसा बनने का प्रयत्न करूंगा।

एक पिता से अच्छा मार्गदर्शक और कोई नहीं हो सकता। हर बच्चे को एक पिता ही सिखाता है की जीवन में कैसे मुश्किलों का सामना करना है। पिता के पास वो ज्ञान का भंडार होता है जो कभी खाली नहीं होता। पापा ने ही मुझे चलना सिखाया, मुझे अच्छी-अच्छी बातों के बारे में बताया और मेरे लिए क्या बुरा है इसका एहसास भी वही कराते हैं।

जब भी मुझे कोई समस्या का हल नहीं मिलता उस समय पापा मेरे मार्गदर्शक बनते हैं और चुटकियों में वो मुझे ऐसा हल बता देते हैं की मेरी समस्या ही खतम हो जाती है।

अनेक गुणों के धनी

मेरे पापा एक धैर्यवान व्यक्ति हैं। कैसी भी विकट परिस्थिति हो वो अपना धीरज कभी नहीं खोते। पापा मुझे हमेशा एक ही चीज सिखाते हैं की जीवन में अपने आप पर नियंत्रण रखना जरूरी है। वो कभी भी मुझ पर या माँ पर कभी भी क्रोध नहीं करते।

पापा मुझे अनुशासन का महत्व समझाते हुये कहते हैं की अनुशासन से चलने वाला व्यक्ति हमेशा सफल होता है। उनका जीवन भी अनुशासित है। सुबह जल्दी उठना, समय पर काम पर जाना, समय पर भोजन करना यह उनकी नित्य क्रियाओं में शामिल है। छुट्टी के समय वो हमें घुमाने बाहर भी ले जाते हैं।

मेरे पापा मुझसे, और परिवार के सभी लोगों से बहुत प्रेम करते हैं, वे घर में किसी भी प्रकार की कमी नहीं होने देते और हमारी जरूरतें और फरमाइशें भी पूरी करते हैं। किसी भी प्रकर की गलती होने पर वे हमें डांटने के बजाए हमेशा प्यार से समझाते हैं और गलतियों के परिणाम बताते हुए दोबारा न करने की सीख भी देते हैं।

घर में दादा-दादी भी पापा की बहुत प्रशंसा करते हैं और कहते हैं की बेटा हो तो ऐसा। पापा भी दादा-दादी के हर रोज पैर छूकर ही काम के लिए बाहर निकलते हैं। पापा का कहना है की बड़े-बुजुर्गों का आशीर्वाद बड़े सौभाग्य से मिलता है अतः उनका सम्मान करना चाहिए।

मेरे पिताजी सरकारी सेवा में हैं। वे एक मंत्रालय में अधिकारी हैं। वे बड़े व्यस्त रहते हैं। कभी-कभी उन्हें सरकारी दौरे पर बाहर भी जाना पड़ता है। सप्ताह में पाँच दिन उनका कार्यालय खुलता है और दो दिन अवकाश रहता है। अवकाश के और भी दिन होते हैं।

गये रविवार को हम सर्कस देखने गये थे। सर्कस देखने । में बड़ा मज़ा आया। हमारा भरपूर मनोरंजन हुआ। मेरे पिताजी मुझे बड़ा प्यार करते हैं। मेरी छोटी बहन से भी उन्हें बड़ा प्यार-दुलार है। हम सब उनका बड़ा आदर करते हैं, उनका कहना मानते हैं। वे बहुत पढ़े-लिखें और विद्वान व्यक्ति हैं। उनके मित्र और जान-पहचान वाले सभी उनके प्रति बड़ा आदरभाव रखते हैं।

मेरे पिताजी की आयु लगभग 40 वर्ष है। उनका कद पाँच फुट दस इंच है। रंग गेहुंआ और शरीर गठीला है। उन की शिक्षा दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय में हुई है। वे एम० एस० सी० फिजिक्स है। बाद में उन्होंने एम० बी० ए० भी कर लिया है। उन्हें अध्ययन करने का बहुत शौक है। वे प्रतिदिन कई घंटें पढ़ने में लगाते हैं। घर पर एक अच्छा खासा पुस्तकालय-सा है। घर पर प्रतिदिन दो समाचार पत्र आते हैं। वे समाचार पत्र अवश्य पढ़ते

मेरे पिताजी सुबह 5.30 बजे उठते हैं, सबसे पहले वह घर में नित्य कार्य से निवृत होकर थोड़ा योगाभ्यास करते हैं फिर बाहर बाग में घूमने के लिए चले जाते हैं। वहाँ से आकर वह स्नान करते हैं। उसके बाद वह नाश्ता करते हैं और समाचार पत्र पढ़ते हैं। रेडियो के 8.00 बजे के समाचार वह अवश्य सुनते हैं। यही उनकी दैनिक क्रिया है। जिसे वह प्रतिदिन करते हैं। इसीलिए वह चुस्त और स्वस्थ रहते हैं।

छुट्टी वाले दिन वह हम सबको घुमाने के लिए ले जाते हैं। पिछले शनिवार को हम सब अप्पू घर गए थे। वहाँ हम सब खूब झूला झूले और अपना मनोरंजन किया। मैं, मेरी बड़ी बहन, मेरा छोटा भाई और मम्मी हम सब पापा को बहुत चाहते हैं। वह भी हम सब से बहुत प्यार करते हैं। हम भाई-बहन भी चाहते हैं कि हम उनके अज्ञाकारी बनकर रहें।

A mother’s love is talked about repeatedly everywhere, in movies, in shows and more. Yet, what we fail to acknowledge is the strength of a father which often goes unnoticed. Father’s a blessing which not many people have in their lives. It would also be wrong to say that every father is the ideal hero for their kids because that is not the case. However, I can vouch for my father without any second thoughts when it comes to being an ideal person.

My Father is Different!

As everyone likes to believe that their father is different, so do I. Nonetheless, this conviction is not merely based on the love I have for him, but also because of his personality. My father owns a business and is quite disciplined in all aspects of life. He is the one who taught me to always practice discipline no matter what work I do.

Most importantly, he has a jovial nature and always makes my mother laugh with his silly antics even after 27 years of marriage. I completely adore this silly side of him when he is with his loved ones. He tries his best to fulfill all our wishes but also maintains the strictness when the need arises.

One of the best things I love about my father is that he has always kept a very safe and open home environment. For instance, my siblings and I can talk about anything with him without the fear of being scolded or judged. This has helped us not to lie, which I have often noticed with my friends.

I can proudly say that it is my father who has been my source of inspiration from day one. In other words, his perspective and personality together have shaped me as a person. ऐसा माना जाता है कि फादर्स डे की शुरुआत सबसे पहले पश्चिम वर्जीनिया के फेयरमोंट (अमेरिका) में 19 जून 1910 हुई थी। वहीं इससे जुड़ी एक और कहानी के मुताबिक सोनोरा स्मार्ट डॉड ने इसकी शुरुआत की थी। दरअसल सोनोरा नाम की लड़की की मां नहीं थीं और उनके पिता ने ही उन्हें मां-बाप दोनों का प्यार दिया था जब वह बड़ी हुई तो सोनोरो ने अपने पिता के प्यार, त्याग और बलिदान को देखकर सोचा कि एक दिन पिता पर केंद्रित उनके सम्मान के नाम पर जरूर होना चाहिए। इसके बाद 19 जून को उन्होंने पिता दिवस मनाया। 

उसके बाद वर्ष 1966 में अमेरिका के राष्ट्रपति “लिंडन जॉनसन” ने इसे फादर्स डे मनाने की ऑफिशियल अनाउंसमेंट की। इसके बाद से ही वर्ष 1972 से अमेरिका में जून के तीसरे रविवार को फादर्स डे मनाया जाने लगा। इस दिन अमेरिका में ऑफिशियल हॉलिडे होता है। पहले फादर्स डे को सिर्फ अमेरिका के साथ साथ आसपास के कुछ प्रमुख देशों में ही मनाया जाता था। लेकिन बाद में फादर्स डे पूरी दुनिया में मनाया जाने लगा। अब भारत में भी लोग इस दिन को काफी अच्छे से सेलिब्रेट करते हैं। 

पिता का अर्थ होता है जन्मदाता और पालन पोषण करने वाला। पिता वह दीपक होता है जो खुद जलकर आपके जीवन में रोशनी भरता है।  पिता के गुण ही बच्चों में आते हैं।  पिता अपने बच्चों का पहला हीरो होता है।  पिता को देखकर ही बच्चे सीखते हैं।  जब आदमी घर से बाहर कमाने के लिए निकलता है तो उसे बहुत सी मुसीबतों का सामना करना पड़ता है। लेकिन वह अपने बच्चों एक लिए हँसते हँसते सब सहन कर लेता है।  पिता का ह्रदय नारियल की तरह होता है जो बाहर से सख्त होता है लेकिन अंदर से उतना ही कोमल होता है।  पिता की मार में भी बच्चों की भलाई छिपी होती है। बच्चा जब घर से बाहर जाता है तो माँ यह सोचकर परेशान रहती है कि मेरा बच्चा आज पूरे दिन भर क्या खाएगा? लेकिन पिता यह सोचता है कि उसका बच्चा सारी ज़िंदगी क्या खाएगा? वास्तव में पिता का त्याग अतुल्य है और उन लिए जितना कहा जाए कम ही है।

मनुष्य का जीवन अनेक उतार-चढ़ावों से होकर गुजरता है । उसकी नवजात शिशु अवस्था से लेकर विद्‌यार्थी जीवन, फिर गृहस्थ जीवन तत्पश्चात् मृत्यु तक वह अनेक प्रकार के अनुभवों से गुजरता है ।

अपने जीवन में वह अनेक प्रकार के कार्यों व उत्तरदायित्वों का निर्वाह करता है । परंतु अपने माता-पिता के प्रति कर्तव्य व उत्तरदायित्वों को वह जीवन पर्यत नहीं चुका सकता है । माता-पिता से संतान को जो कुछ भी प्राप्त होता है वह अमूल्य है । माँ की ममता व स्नेह तथा पिता का अनुशासन किसी भी मनुष्य के व्यक्तित्व निर्माण में सबसे प्रमुख भूमिका रखते हैं ।

किसी भी मनुष्य को उसके जन्म से लेकर उसे अपने पैरों तक खड़ा करने में माता-पिता को किन-किन कठिनाइयों से होकर गुजरना पड़ता है इसका वास्तविक अनुमान संभवत: स्वयं माता या पिता बनने के उपरांत ही लगाया जा सकता है । हिंदू शास्त्रों व वेदों के अनुसार मनुष्य को 84 लाख योनियो के पश्चात् मानव शरीर प्राप्त होता है । इस दृष्टि से माता-पिता सदैव पूजनीय होते हैं जिनके कारण हमें यह दुर्लभ मानव शरीर की प्राप्ति हुई ।

आज संसार में यदि हमारा कुछ भी अस्तित्व है या हमारी इस जगत में कोई पहचान है तो उसका संपूर्ण श्रेय हमारे माता-पिता को ही जाता है । यही कारण है कि भारत के आदर्श पुरुषों में से एक राम ने माता-पिता के एक इशारे पर युवराज पद का मोह त्याग दिया और वन चले गए ।

कितने कष्टों को सहकर माता पुत्र को जन्म देती है, उसके पश्चात् अपने स्नेह रूपी अमृत से सींचकर उसे बड़ा करती है । माता-पिता के स्नेह व दुलार से बालक उन संवेदनाओं को आत्मसात् करता है जिससे उसे मानसिक बल प्राप्त होता है ।

हमारी अनेक गलतियों व अपराधों को वे कष्ट सहते हुए भी क्षमा करते हैं और सदैव हमारे हितों को ध्यान में रखते हुए सद्‌मार्ग पर चलने हेतु प्रेरित करते हैं । पिता का अनुशासन हमें कुसंगति के मार्ग पर चलने से रोकता है एवं सदैव विकास व प्रगति के पथ पर चलने की प्रेरणा देता है ।

यदि कोई डॉक्टर, इंजीनियर व उच्च पदों पर आसीन होता है तो उसके पीछे उसके माता-पिता का त्याग, बलिदान व उनकी प्रेरणा की शक्ति निहित होती है । यदि प्रांरभ से ही माता-पिता से उसे सही सीख व प्ररेणा नहीं मिली होती तो संभवत: समाज में उसे वह प्रतिष्ठा व सम्मान प्राप्त नहीं होता ।

अत: हम जीवन पथ पर चाहे किसी भी ऊँचाई पर पहुँचें हमें कभी भी अपने माता-पिता के सहयोग, उनके त्याग और बलिदान को नहीं भूलना चाहिए । हमारी खुशियों व उन्नति के पीछे हमारे माता-पिता की अनगिनत खुशियों का परित्याग निहित होता है । अत: हमारा यह परम दायित्व बनता है कि हम उन्हें पूर्ण सम्मान प्रदान करें और जहाँ तक संभव हो सके खुशियाँ प्रदान करने की चेष्टा करें ।

अत: जीपन पर्यंत मनुष्य को अपने माता-पिता के प्रति कर्तव्यों व उत्तरदायित्वों का निर्वाह करना चाहिए । माता-पिता की सेवा सच्ची सेवा है । उनकी सेवा से बढ़कर दूसरा कोई पुण्य कार्य नहीं है । हमारे वैदिक ग्रंथों में इन्हीं कारणों से माता को देवी के समकक्ष माना गया है ।

माता-पिता की सेवा द्‌वारा प्राप्त उनके आशीर्वाद से मनुष्य जो आत्म संतुष्टि प्राप्त करता है वह समस्त भौतिक सुखों से भी श्रेष्ठ है । ”मातृदेवो भव, पितृदेवो भव” वाली वैदिक अवधारणा को एक बार फिर से प्रतिष्ठित करने की आवश्यकता है ताकि हमारे देश का गौरव अक्षुण्ण बना रहे ।

The Story behind Father's Day Celebration:

There are two major stories behind celebrating Father's Day. 

The first Father's Day was celebrated in America on 19 June 1910 to honor the father of Miss Sonora Smart Dooh. Sanora's father William Smart was a civil war veteran. William Smart's wife died at the time of giving birth to his sixth child. He raised his six children alone after his wife passed away. After William Smart passed away, his daughter Sanora wanted to celebrate Father's Day on June 5, on the death anniversary of her father. She believed that all of us always respect the mother's sacrifices and emotions but no one pays attention to the father's sacrifices. Not everyone understands the importance of a father in life. In order to celebrate the life and sacrifices of a father, we should celebrate Father's Day. On this day, we can tell our father how important he is in our lives. For some reasons, it was postponed to the third Sunday of June.

Origin of Celebration

According to the second story, Father's Day was celebrated for the first time in America in Fairmont, West Virginia. The day was celebrated for the first time on July 5, 1908. It was commemorated in memory of 361 men, who died in 1907 in a coal mine explosion. Father's Day was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1972 during President Nixon's reign. Since then, Father's Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June.

Father's Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. In countries like India, the United States and the United Kingdom, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. In Argentina, Canada, France, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa and Venezuela, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Whereas in Australia and New Zealand, Father's Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. In Thailand, Father's Day is celebrated on 5 December; on this day the birthday of the King of Thailand is also celebrated. In Brazil, Father's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of August.

Modes of Celebration:

Everyone has their way of celebrating Father's Day. Many people go out on this day to eat good food. On this day, children give gifts to their father, offer them greetings, and give them cards and flowers. On this day, every child honors his father and offers gratitude. 

Mother’s sacrifice is given a high position in every civilization and culture. However, the person who dedicates his whole life for the happiness of his children and his family should also get the same respect as the mother. All my knowledge in sports or cars comes from my father.

His father Karamchand Gandhi was the Chief Minister (diwan) of Porbandar state. His mother Putlibai was a religious woman.

He went to England to study law at the age of 18 years. After his return to India, he started a practice as a lawyer in the Bombay High Court. He went to South Africa and started practicing law. There he protested against the injustice and harsh treatment of the white people towards the native Africans and Indians.

He returned to India in 1915 and started to take interest in politics. Mahatma Gandhi used the ideals of truth and non-violence as weapons to fight against British colonial rule. He worked for the upliftment of Harijans. He fought against untouchability and worked for Hindu-Muslim unity.

Through his freedom movements like Non-cooperation movement, Khilafat movement, and civil disobedience movement he fought for freedom against the British imperialists. 1942, he launched the Quit India movement to end the British rule. At last, India got freedom in 1947 at his initiative.

Mr. Gandhi started his law practice. He went to South Africa in the course of a law suit. He saw the condition of the Indians living there. They were treated very badly by the white men. They were not allowed to travel in 1st class on the trains, also not allowed to enter certain localities, clubs, and so on. Once when Gandhiji was travelling in the 1st class compartment of the train, he was beaten and thrown out of the train. Then Mahatma decided to unite all Indians and started the Non-violence and Satyagrah Movement. In no time, the Movement picked up.

Mahatma Gandhi returned to India and joined Indian National Congress. He started the Non-violence, Non-cooperation Movements here also. He travelled all over India, especially the rural India to see the conditions of the poor.

Mahatma Gandhi started Satyagrah Movement to oppose the Rowlatt Act and there was the shoot-out at Jalian-Wala-Bagh. The Act was drawn after many people were killed. He then started the Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movements. And finally, Gandhiji won freedom for us. India became free on 15th August, 1947. He is called as “Father of the Nation”. Unfortunately, Gandhiji was shot on 30 January 1948 by a Hindu extremist Nathuram Godse.

Introduction:.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi was a politician, social activist, writer, and leader of the Indian national movement. He is a figure known all over the world. His name is a household word in India, rather, in all the world round. His creed of non-violence has placed him on the same par with Buddha, Sri Chaitanya, and Jesus Christ.

Family & Education:

Mahatma Gandhi was born in the small town of Porbandar in the Kathiwad state on October 2, 1869. His father Karamchand Gandhi was the prime minister of Rajkot State and his mother Putlibai was a pious lady. Her influence shaped the future life of Mahatma Gandhi.

He was sent to school at a very early age, but he was not a very bright student. After his Matriculation Examination, he went to England to study law and returned home as a barrister. He began to practice law in Bombay but he was not very successful.

Life in South Africa:

In 1893 Gandhiji went to South Africa in connection with a case. He found his own countrymen treated with contempt by the whites. Gandhiji started satyagraha against this color hated. It was a non-violent protest, yet hundreds were beaten up and thousands were sent to jail. But Gandhiji did not buzz an inch from his faith in truth and non-violence and at last, he succeeded in his mission. He was awarded the title of Mahatma.

Fight for India’s Independence:

In 1915 Gandhiji came back to India after twenty long years in South Africa. He joined the Indian National congress and championed the cause of India’s freedom movement. He asked people to unite for the cause of freedom. He used the weapons of truth and non-violence to fight against the mighty British.

The horrible massacre at Jalianwalabag in Punjab touched him and he resolved to face the brute force of the British Government with moral force. In 1920 he launched the Non-cooperation movement to oppose British rule in India.

He led the famous Dandi March on 12th March 1930. This march was meant to break the salt law. And as a result of this, the British rule in India had already started shaking and he had to go to London for a Round Table Conference in 1931. But this Conference proved abortive and the country was about to give a death blow to the foreign rule.

In 1942 Gandhiji launched his final bout for freedom. He started the ‘Quit India’ movement. At last, the British Government had to quit India in 1947, and India was declared a free country on August 15, 1947.

Social Works:

Mahatma Gandhi was a social activist who fought against the evils of society. He found the Satyagraha Ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati river in Gujarat. He preached against untouchability and worked for Hindu-Muslim unity. He fought tirelessly for the rights of Harijans.

Conclusion:

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation was a generous, god-loving, and peace-loving person. But unfortunately, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on 30th January 1948 at the age of 78. To commemorate Gandhiji’s birth anniversary Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year on October 2. Gandhiji’s teachings and ideologies will continue to enlighten and encourage us in the future.

Who means more to you — your friends or your lovers? In a vivid, thoughtful and nuanced collection of essays, Lilly Dancyger explores the powerful role that female friendships played in her chaotic upbringing marked by her parents’ heroin use and her father’s untimely death when she was only 12.

“First Love: Essays on Friendship” begins with a beautiful paean to her cousin Sabina, who was raped and murdered at age 20 on her way home from a club. As little kids, their older relatives used to call them Snow White and Rose Red after the Grimm’s fairy tale, “two sisters who are not rivals or foils, but simply love each other.”

Who means more to you — your friends or your lovers? In a vivid, thoughtful and nuanced collection of essays, Lilly Dancyger explores the powerful role that female friendships played in her chaotic upbringing marked by her parents’ heroin use and her father’s untimely death when she was only 12.

“First Love: Essays on Friendship” begins with a beautiful paean to her cousin Sabina, who was raped and murdered at age 20 on her way home from a club. As little kids, their older relatives used to call them Snow White and Rose Red after the Grimm’s fairy tale, “two sisters who are not rivals or foils, but simply love each other.”

Calls to Divest From Israel Put Students and Donors on Collision Course

To get protesters off campus lawns, Brown University and others have agreed to consider ending investments linked to Israel. But how?

Desperate to stem protests that have convulsed campuses across the country, a small number of universities have agreed to reconsider their investments in companies that do business with Israel.

The deals, which have eased tension on campuses with only a few days left before students break for the summer, would have been unthinkable even a week ago. And they’re a gamble, potentially putting universities on a collision course with influential donors, politicians and students who support Israel.

The schools are still far from pulling money: Brown University, the liberal Ivy League institution, agreed this week only to hold a board vote this fall on whether its $6.6 billion endowment should divest from any Israeli-connected holdings. In exchange, the pro-Palestinian encampment on the campus's main lawn was dismantled.

Northwestern University and the University of Minnesota have also struck deals with student protesters to clear camps in exchange for a commitment to discuss the schools’ investment policies around Israel. The moves could add pressure on administrators at Columbia University, the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina, among others, where protesters have made divestment from Israel a central rallying cry .

The issue of financial divestment from Israel has long been an untouchable one, both in American politics and among the Wall Street titans who manage university endowments and make up a large source of donations. Taking sides now is a surefire way to inflame at least one faction in a conflict that has divided campuses, split the Democratic Party and handed Republican lawmakers a cudgel with which to attack the institutions.

Even the renewed talk of divestment has raised alarms among the well-heeled donors whom few universities dare cross, and who have exerted influence over the debate on college campuses since Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel and the subsequent invasion of Gaza. Billionaires, including the fund manager William A. Ackman and Marc Rowan, a private-equity chieftain, mounted campaigns to remove the presidents of Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania over their handling of antisemitism on their campuses.

Brown’s agreement will let students make their case and then have the Brown Corporation, the university’s governing body, vote on the matter in October. It was partly negotiated by the university president, Christina H. Paxson, who met directly with student protesters last Friday, before proposing a “path forward” on Monday that included allowing a small group of activists to discuss the divestment proposal with the corporation later this month, the university said.

But Dr. Paxson’s initial offer did not include bringing a divestment proposal to a vote. That came after two university negotiators and six students involved with the Brown Divest Coalition, one of the groups behind the movement, reached a deal on Tuesday, the university and several students said.

The agreement immediately gave the university control of its facilities in time to allow students to finish classes and hold in-person graduation ceremonies and an alumni reunion this month. One donor, an investor who has made sizable contributions to the university and describes himself as a supporter of Israel, said members of the administration had assured him that Brown wouldn’t ultimately divest from Israel.

The administration, this donor said, could still take steps to prevent a vote.

A Brown spokesman, Brian Clark, said the corporation was “fully committed” to voting on the matter.

Some other donors said they saw the agreement as a smart way to push off the issue until a time when the situation in Israel and Gaza may be less intense.

But in interviews, several donors — ranging from recent graduates to millionaire financiers and one billionaire — said going through with divestment would cross a bright line. They said they would reduce, or cut entirely, their donations to the university.

While they were skeptical that Brown would ultimately pull any money from investments linked to Israel, some were dismayed that their alma mater appeared to have even partly given in to protesters. Most asked not to be named because of the delicate nature of the matter.

Harry Chalfin, a 26-year-old Brown graduate whose parents also earned degrees from the Providence, R.I., school, said he would closely watch the divestment debate.

“We would consider using our family’s not-tremendous-but-not-negligible financial leverage to pressure Brown on this,” said Mr. Chalfin, whose father works in investment management.

Universities carefully control their endowments, typically revealing little about how they invest billions of dollars, and any consideration of moving funds away from Israel is a victory for protesters agitated over what they say has been insufficient support from the institutions for Gaza. That position puts investing in Israel on a par with investing in fossil fuels, which has become a nonstarter now for many colleges.

“There will be donors who are against this. Our argument is: That can’t matter,” said Rafi Ash, a Brown sophomore who helped lead the protest on the university’s main lawn.

The divestment movement targeting Israel predates the current war in Gaza. At Brown, the formal campaign dates back to at least 2019, when students voted in favor of a referendum proposal that called for the university to divest from “companies complicit in human rights abuses in Palestine.”

In 2020, a university committee that considers the ethical standards of Brown’s investing recommended that the university divest from 10 companies it said were helping Israel commit human-rights abuses. It also outlined criteria for considering ethical investment with regard to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

At the time, Dr. Paxson turned away the efforts, saying the endowment was “not a political instrument” to resolve complex issues. In 2021, she refused to move forward the divestment proposal, in part because it lacked a “requisite level of specificity.”

The most recent divestment proposal borrows heavily from the old one, using the same criteria laid out in 2020. Student protesters see it as a practical way for the school to pressure Israel to agree to a cease-fire, and cite as a precedent Brown’s divestment from investing directly in South Africa during the 1980s, Darfur two decades ago and fossil fuels starting in 2017.

Supporters of Israel say those comparisons are off base, and see the nation’s incursion in Gaza as a defensive response to Hamas’s October rampage and hostage taking. One longstanding response to such calls is that divestment from Israel stems from antisemitism, because activists are targeting the only Jewish country in the world and not seeking divestment from other nations accused of engaging in human-rights atrocities.

And Rhode Island, where Brown is located, is one of more than two dozen states with laws that could penalize efforts to boycott, issue sanctions against or divest from Israel, though those measures have been challenged on freedom-of-speech grounds.

But there are also practical challenges with any effort to divest. One, simply, is identifying what to divest and how to define the terms of such a policy.

Some academics question whether divestment works, with research finding that it has little to no impact on the bottom lines or behavior of targeted firms. Others point to the logistical complexity of divesting: As a private institution, Brown isn’t required to disclose all of its endowment’s investments, and in fact says almost nothing about them. Some 96 percent of its coffers are invested via outside asset managers.

The Brown Divest Coalition said it wanted the university to sell off “stocks, funds, endowment and other monetary instruments from companies facilitating and profiting from Israeli human rights abuses.” It outlined criteria for divesting from certain companies, drawing upon lists compiled by three organizations, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The students acknowledge that they don’t even know if Brown invests in any of those companies. That’s because what Brown does with its money — and how the institution or any other school would get rid of them — is hardly straightforward.

Brown does not disclose its outside asset managers or their investments. Members of Brown’s corporation did not respond to requests for comment.

“The university has not endorsed the divestment proposal,” Mr. Clark, the Brown spokesman, said in a statement. “Whether it’s for or against divestment, the vote will bring clarity to an issue that is of longstanding interest to many members of our community.”

Several steps remain before Brown’s board votes on divestment. First, five of the protesting students will meet with five members of the corporation during its regular meetings this month. In a letter to the university community on Tuesday, Dr. Paxson said she hoped the meeting would “allow for a full and frank exchange of views.”

Said Stewart Baker, a Brown alumnus and donor: “This is a great way to push the issue aside.”
