Millennials are not a myth. get over it..

Every so often, an article will declare that generations don’t exist and that they are a myth perpetuated by the media. The most recent example just appeared in USA Today . However, it failed to mention a single peer-reviewed research article on generational differences or cultural change, even though there are many—from my work to Sara Konrath’s to evidence in medical journals to the long tradition in sociology of examining change over time in attitudes .

Instead, the article featured quotes from academics who are no doubt experts in their own fields, but who are clearly completely unaware of the extensive research evidence for generational differences and cultural change.

The article is an intriguing mix of good points and false ones, so let's tackle each point in turn.

1. The very existence of generations. “I don’t think generations exist," said Siva Vaidhyanathan , a media studies professor at the University of Virginia. "They are at best the equivalent of astrology and at worst a source of bigotry. Most of the references to generations that we see are based on muddy categories created by marketers who have zero social science credibility.”

Literally hundreds of social science articles document generational differences in attitudes, behaviors, values, and traits, many based on nationally representative samples and/or comparing the generations at the same age (here is just one , on work attitudes). Or play around with the data in the General Social Survey online yourself to explore the many ways Americans' attitudes have changed over the years, or see t he Monitoring the Future data on drug and alcohol use among teens .Yes, there is a lot of misinformation out there from marketers and consultants who base their statements on conjecture or a few one-time polls. On that we can agree. But don't say something has "zero social science credibility" if you haven't even looked.

2. The birth year cutoffs. “Some generational experts say Millennials—which some refer to as Generation Y—are anyone born between 1980 and 1995 while others say it is between 1982 and 2000,” writes the USA Today article’s author, William Cummings.

True, the birth year cutoffs are debated, and are somewhat arbitrary (as I’ve noted before ). Sometimes the cutoffs change—but that’s because new data tells us they should. For example, I used to think Millennials would end with those born in 1999. Now, based on data from large surveys I analyzed for my upcoming book iGen , the end year appears to be 1994, with iGen beginning in 1995. I put iGen’s end point at 2012, but that could change when there is more data available on these very young individuals.

In addition, changing the cutoffs, or having different cutoffs, has no impact on the basic fact behind generational differences: When you were born affects your attitudes, values, and behaviors. That is true no matter where the cutoffs are placed.

3. Contradictory evidence. According to the article, Jessica Kriegel , author of Unfairly Labeled: How Your Workplace Can Benefit from Ditching Generational Stereotypes, “found that [books and articles on generations] frequently contradict each other.”

Here we agree somewhat. Most of these books and articles are not based on empirical data, and those that are rely on one-time polls that cannot separate age and generation. Some are pure conjecture. That's probably why they contradict each other.

But when we look at the best data—from large surveys of people at the same age—the results are very consistent: Millennials (and modern American culture) are more individualistic (thus the title of my book on Millennials, Generation Me ). As a result, Millennials are optimistic , self-confident, have high expectations for themselves, and value equality and tolerance (the result of treating people as individuals). There are also consistent trends for iGen , the post-Millennial generation born after 1995 who are the first to grow up with smartphones.

4. Generational differences can’t possibly exist because of class differences. Kriegel says, "You really can’t put them all in a box. And what we do is, we put them all in a box, and that box is really based on a middle-income, white, American person and then we just say that’s the only kind of Millennial that exists right now. “

This is completely untrue. The vast majority of the work on generational differences, especially in the last ten years, has relied on nationally representative samples. That means people of all classes and socioeconomic statuses are included. In addition, most generational trends appear across all SES levels. Here are four published examples: Materialism , religious commitment , depression , and sexual frequency .

Todd Gitlin , a journalism professor at Columbia, says in the article, "The notion that an 18-year-old in East Kentucky growing up in a coal-mining hollow has a great deal in common with somebody growing up on the Upper East Side of New York, enrolling in an Ivy League school is ridiculous."

I agree with Gitlin that class differences exist. But so do generational differences. Both the Kentucky kid and the one in Manhattan live very different lives now in the 2010s than kids in Kentucky or Manhattan in 1970. (Smartphones are only the most obvious example). Just because one type of difference exists doesn’t mean the other does not. People differ based on many characteristics—class, race, gender , region, and generation.

Kriegel goes on to say, "Tech savviness is much more related to socioeconomic status than it is to generation."

Also untrue, at least in the last ten years. Smartphones have completely collapsed the previous tech gap by socioeconomic status (SES). In data I’m analyzing on high school students, SES was unrelated to the amount of time students spent online.

5. Generational differences are stereotyping. "The problem is that too often we identify trends and then apply those trends to the people that we work with, either our employees or our colleagues. And that’s when we start to make assumptions about people that may or may not be true,” says Kriegel. I agree. That is not a problem with the data on generational differences—it’s a problem with people who leap to conclusions, who generalize from an average to an individual . That does not mean we shouldn't understand the average differences.

6. Time period vs. generation/cohort. Cummings notes that the differences found in, for example, the polls done by the Pew Research Center may be due to age. “Pew acknowledges that the differences can be born out of an individual's place 'in the life cycle—whether a young adult, middle-aged parent or retiree' rather than anything unique about that person's generation," he writes. "Take, for example, studies saying Millennials dine out more than non-Millennials. Some leap to the conclusion that this is the result of the latest foodie apps or the popularity of social media 'food porn .' But young people have typically eaten out more than their older counterparts (especially when you count carry out) because they are less likely to have family constraints on their free time and finances.”

Here, we again agree. One-time polls, such as some done by the Pew Center and many done by generational consultants, cannot separate the effects of age and generation . That’s why the studies I and many others do on generational differences compare young people at different points in time, taking age out of the equation and comparing the generations when they were the same age .

The article also notes that some effects are “period effects,” meaning cultural events that influence all generations equally. In other words, some cultural changes affect everyone. Again, I agree: My co-authors and I have taken this into account in many papers ( here is one ), using a statistical technique that can separate the effects of age, period, and cohort (the technical term for generations). Sometimes the period effect is stronger, and sometimes the cohort effect is stronger. I’m not sure it matters that much—both period and cohort effects capture cultural change.

7. There’s a larger problem here—this is a news story that reads like an opinion piece, because the writer either ignored or did not bother to search for the vast literature on generational differences in peer-reviewed journals, which are not difficult to find. He does quote one generational consultant, but apparently did not do a Google search, much less a Google Scholar search or one in PsycInfo or Sociological Abstracts. Here’s the irony: Three weeks ago, the same reporter published an article in USA Today titled “Millennials differ from other generations in almost every regard.”

That article was based on Census data, showing that Millennials have more student loan debt, are more likely to live with their parents, and are more likely to work if female. These are probably just some of the reasons their attitudes and values differ as well—but there was no effort to find the facts on generational differences. I thought mainstream journalism was fighting the fact-free era—and I hope they will next time they cover generations.

Now that there is so much good evidence for generational differences, it’s time to move away from these false narratives. Instead, we should be asking how cultural changes affect us, and how all generations can work together to understand them—and each other.

What is the Generation Gap?

Generation Gap is a term given to the gap or age difference between two sets of people; the young people and their elders, especially between children and their parents. Every generation lives at a certain time under certain circumstances and conditions. So, all generations have their own set of values and views. Every generation wants to uphold the principles they believe in. This is a problem that has continued for ages.

People born in different periods under different conditions have their views based on the circumstances they have been through. The patterns of life have been changing continuously according to time. Everyone wants to live and behave in his way and no one wants to compromise with his or her values and views. There has always been a difference in attitude or lack of understanding between the younger and older generations. This attitude has augmented the generation gap and it is becoming wider day by day. This gap now has started impacting our lives in the wrong way. 

It is always good to have a wide range of ideas, views, and opinions. It indicates how we are developing and advancing but sometimes this becomes worrisome when the views and ideas are not accepted by both generations. Parents create a certain image in their minds for their children. They want to bring up their children with values that they have been brought up with and expect their children to follow the same. Parents want children to act following their values, as they believe, it is for their benefit and would do well for them. 

Children on the other hand have a broader outlook and refuse to accept the traditional ways. They want to do things their way and don’t like going by any rulebook. Mostly, young people experience conflict during their adolescence. They are desperately searching for self-identity. Parents at times fail to understand the demands of this fast-paced world. Ultimately, despite love and affection for each other both are drained out of energy and not able to comprehend the other. Consequently, there is a lack of communication and giving up on relationships.

Different Ways to Reduce the Generation Gap

Nothing in the world can be as beautiful as a parent-child relationship. It should be nurtured very delicately and so it is important to bridge the gap between the two generations. It is time to realize that neither is completely right nor wrong. Both generations have to develop more understanding and acceptance for each other. Having a dialogue with each other calmly, with the idea of sorting out conflict amicably in ideas, changing their mindset for each other, and coming to a middle ground can be the most helpful instrument in bridging the gap between the two generations. 

Spending more time with each other like family outings, vacations, picnics, shopping, watching movies together could be some effective ways to build up a strong bond with each other. Both the generations need to study the ways of the society during their growing period and have mutual respect for it. To reduce the friction between the two generations, both parents and children have to give space to each other and define certain boundaries that the latter should respect. 

The generation gap occurs because society is constantly changing. It is the responsibility of both generations to fill this gap with love, affection, and trust. Both generations should have mutual respect for the views and opinions that they uphold and advance cautiously with the development of society.

The generation gap is a very critical concept that occurs because of the different natures of every person. No one can end this generation gap but obviously, you can opt for some way in which it can be reduced.

The Generation Myth: Is The Generation Gap All In Our Heads?

Ask anyone and they’ll say that the generation gap is real. they’ve seen it in action. unfortunately, the science just doesn’t support it. is the generation gap all in our heads.

Google the generation gap and you will find a plethora of articles purporting to help managers and organisations better manage and motivate the different generations – particularly those troublesome Millennials who are just so darn lazy and entitled!

But the big question is – does the generation gap really exist?

Well, according to research, the answer is no.

Plenty of studies have tried to prove the existence of the generation gap, however the results show that generational differences, if any, are minimal.  A 2012 meta-analysis of 20 studies examining generational differences in work values, found only small and inconsistent differences across the Baby Boomers, Gen X and the Millennials.  The notion that there are significant differences between groups based on age or generation just isn’t supported.

In a 2015 review of the research into generational based differences from Cambridge University Press, the authors conclude that “there is little solid empirical evidence supporting generationally based differences and almost no theory behind why such differences should even exist.” 

A 2014 study looking at generational differences in work attitudes found that there were larger differences in work attitudes within generations than between generations.  The study’s conclusion: “avoid treating employees simply as members of generations, ignoring the fact that other individual differences likely play a more prominent role”.

Why do generational stereotypes exist?

Stereotypes are generalisations about people that we use in everyday life to save cognitive energy.  Rather than starting with a blank slate and building a unique picture of each person based on our interactions, we tend to put people into groups based on certain characteristics – age being one of them.  It makes our complicated world easier and faster to process.

The theory on the generations suggests that people born in a certain time period are heavily influenced by the events in their world, and as such, share similar traits, values, attitudes.  For example, the Silent Generation, lived through the Great Depression which made them frugal and instilled the value of hard work.  

By grouping people by generation, we narrow a very broad range of people down to a handful of categories.  Much easier to manage. 

Unfortunately this process of placing people in groups with shared characteristics leads us to make generalisations about people that may be wildly inaccurate.  What happens when someone doesn't fit the mould?

The stereotype snowball

Regardless of how inaccurate these stereotypes may be, once they exist, they become hard to shake.  We look for evidence to confirm these stereotypes and ignore evidence to the contrary. 

Research has shown that people more likely to notice and store information about a group or person that is consistent with a stereotype and less likely to notice when they are not. 

For example, a common stereotype is that older generations are terrible with technology.  But is this really true?  Sure, we can find examples to support it, but we can also find examples to disprove it.  According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1 in 3 information technology and communications workers are 45 years or older.  Younger generations might take notice of an older coworker who is less technologically literate than them, but do they notice the technology experts working in their business that challenge that stereotype?

Another common stereotype is that younger generations are glued to their smart phones.  Older generations may be more acutely aware of younger coworkers checking their phone, but do they notice when older coworkers engage in the same behaviour?  A study by Deloitte found that that 84% of working adults use their personal phones during workhours and check their phones an average of 52 times per day.  Millennials are not the only ones glued to their smart phones.

Generational stereotypes are also somewhat unique in the fact that unlike other stereotypes, which are actively challenged and discouraged, generational stereotypes are reinforced.  We train people in this stuff.  What if tomorrow we decided to start training people how to manage people with blonde hair?  Or to manage based on people’s height?  How would you feel about that? 

The dangers of generational stereotypes in the workplace

The challenge with generational stereotypes, like all stereotypes, is that while they may be accurate in some cases, often they are just plain wrong. This can have serious implications on how we treat and manage others, as well as organisational policies we design to cater for these stereotypes.

Managing and working with others

Let's consider this piece of wisdom from a 1943 edition of Mass Transportation (US) magazine on how to recruit and manage women (…don’t shoot the messenger):

If you can get them, pick young married women . . . they usually have more of a sense of responsibility than do their unmarried sisters, they’re less likely to be flirtatious; as a rule, they need the work or they wouldn’t be doing it. General experience indicates that “husky” girls—those who are just a little on the heavy side—are likely to be more even-tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters. Be tactful in issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can’t shrug off harsh words the way that men do. Never ridicule a woman—it breaks her spirit and cuts her efficiency. (Sanders, 1943, p. 233).

While you ponder how something that was ever published - imagine the impact ideas like that had on the way women were treated by managers and coworkers?  

Yes, granted, that’s an extreme example of stereotyping, but are our current generational stereotypes any better?

In a study examining the effect of generational stereotypes on the quality of training, researchers found that when trainers believed they were training an older person how to complete a computer task, they provided worse training than when they believed they were teaching an older person. The stereotype that older people are less able to learn new skills – especially technology related skills – meant that older people received lower quality training, which can reduce learning and affect their job performance.

Organisational policies and practices

Generational stereotypes have also found their way into organisational policies and practices, particularly in how to reward, motivate and engage members of the different generations.

Take, for example, a reward program structured around generational differences. Based on “ proven strategies ” for motivating Millennials, you might implement a tech savvy, gamified, reward program that offers member only discounts on things the opportunity to give back to their communities. Do all Millennials really want that stuff?

Besides the fact that there is minimal evidence to support this approach, implementing policies based on vague stereotypes risks alienating that people that just don't fit that mould.  Remember, there is more difference within generations than between generations.  How many of your Millenials are actually typical Millennials?

Researchers argue that rather than trying to design policies and practices around generational differences, organisations should focus on more flexible practices and strategies that better address the individual needs of all employees regardless of their generation.

Is the generation gap a myth.

It would be naive to assume that ‘generation gap’ is a myth. How can it be a myth when the technology is making inroads into our lives in such breakneck speed?

Let’s consider the following basic aspects of our living.

Let’s consider food, the most important aspect. Today’s youngsters prefer noodles, pizzas, burgers, Chinese fried rice, chocolates etc. Gone are the days when people ate chapatti and vegetable curries, or ragi balls, or soaked beaten rice mixed with jaggery and curd for breakfast. Now, it’s sandwiches, or pasta to start your first meal of the day.

Let’s consider dress. Who wears a dhoti to the office? It’s considered so old-fashioned. Going to a job interview with dhoti and kurta will certainly disqualify you. Jean pants, T-shirts are the new normal. Even housewives wear jeans and tops both inside and outside office. Only on ceremonial occasions, their sarees come out of their wardrobes.

Then, let’s go to communication.  The son sitting next to his father uses WhatsApp to say that he is going to school. Youngsters don’t write with the old-fashioned pen and paper. They send a mail, instead. The telegraph department has gone from us forever.

In matters of outlook, value system, career ambitions, attitude towards religion, marriage etc., the gap between generations is widening fast. In the same family, old parents find their children so much different from them in all manners. So, ‘generation gap’ is a reality, not a myth.
