Essay on I want to be an Astronaut in English

I have a dream to become an astronaut when I grow up. An astronaut is a person who goes to space in a spacecraft and study the universe.

The reason why I want to become an astronaut is because I love the sky, stars, planets, asteroids. It looks like a mystery to me and I want to know more about it. I want to know how it feels like and how it looks like above the sky. I see the sun, moon stars in the sky in the morning and at night. They all look so beautiful but very far. I feel like I want to go and see them from close or touch their land. I want to know how far is the moon, how hot is the sun and how many stars are there.

Once I saw an astronaut on tv and she showed how everything was flowing in the space. When she poured water from the bottle, it flew upward in many drops. All that was looking like a magic to me and I want to do it too. I also love the suit and helmet that the astronauts wear because it looks very strong and powerful.

I want to be an astronaut so that I can know if life is possible on any other planet. I want to send information about other galaxies, black holes, stars and other planets on my planet Earth. This will help scientists to know about the universe well. When I will become an astronaut, I will see how Earth looks from above because it looks beautiful in pictures. I will contact on my planet and tell everything that I will feel to my family and all people on Earth. I will value my planet more when I will come back.

I Applied to Be a NASA Astronaut. You Can Too

AFS-8/101

R ecently, I applied to become an astronaut. I would like to be able to say that there is a non-zero chance I will be accepted, but sub-zero is more like it. Not a whole lot of people who can actually recall Sputnik—which, for the record, was launched on Oct. 4, 1957—quite make the age cut to climb on top of a rocket. Still, I filled out the nine-page form and sent it in, even if I have no doubt I’ll wind up in the cosmic slush pile.

You, however, may have more luck. NASA is hiring ; on March 5 it opened its doors to a new class of 12 or so astronauts and will be accepting applications until April 2, though it is considering extending the deadline to accommodate more candidates. The salary is $152,258; the place of employment is the Johnson Space Center in Houston—with work trips to, you know, space. But it’s best to prepare yourself for disappointment. NASA hires a new astronaut class every four years or so, and back in 2015, a peak year, there were about 12,000 applicants—a number that could be matched this time around too, says April Jordan, NASA’s astronaut hiring manager.

“There were certainly some things going on in the world then, like The Martian coming out,” says Jordan. The rise of the private space sector and the beginning of NASA’s Artemis lunar program could similarly turbocharge things in 2024. Not every one of the applications in 2015 was entirely serious, and things are likely to be the same now. “We actually have a fair number of folks who apply just to get the rejection,” Jordan says. All the same, untold thousands will apply in earnest, and NASA is making a special effort in this recruitment round to stress that it is becoming ever-more egalitarian, ever-more receptive to astronaut candidates who don’t fit the narrow fighter-jock profile.

In 1958, when America went casting about for its first class of seven astronauts, candidates had to meet a range of rigorous standards , including being military test pilots with more than 1,500 hours in the cockpit; possessing a degree in the physical sciences or engineering; standing no more than five feet, eleven inches tall, in order to fit into the tiny Mercury spacecraft, and more. Then too, there were the unspoken criteria: the people selected were all white, all male, all family men.

Those walls have long been coming down, but only slowly: After more than 65 years in the space game, NASA has flown 329 astronauts, 54 of whom have been women. The numbers are even lower for Black Americans, with just 17 making trips to space. Still, progress is accelerating. In 2020, the space agency announced the 18 astronauts it had selected for the Artemis lunar missions it intends to commence next year; nine of the crewmembers are women and 10 are people of color, three are women of color, and two are Hispanic.

“More than a decade ago, NASA decided that equity and inclusion would be part of its core values,” says Victor Glover, a Naval aviator and Iraq war veteran who was selected in the astronaut class of 2013 and spent six months aboard the International Space Station in 2020 and 2021. He will also be the first Black person to visit the moon when he and the other three members of the Artemis II crew make a circumlunar journey in September 2025. The team also includes Christina Koch, the first woman assigned to a moon mission. “[NASA’s] decisions have led us to having an astronaut office that looks very much like America," Glover says. "You could reach in and grab any four people, and they would look like our crew.”

NASA’s astronaut application is, in many ways, like most job applications—with sections to list education, work experience, references, and more. Military service is included as well, but it is not the absolute criterion it once was. The astronauts who make it through the current selection process will not just be demographically diverse, but professionally too. Firefighters and other first responders are especially prized by the 21st century NASA. “They are people who run into dangerous situations,” says Jordan. Former collegiate athletes are also attractive for what Jordan calls their “teaming skills.” Still, the application leaves no mistake about how particular the talents required for an astronaut gig will be.

“The duties of this position require moderate to arduous amounts of physical exertion involving walking, standing, heavy lifting, crouching, crawling and exposure to inclement weather. Are you willing to perform arduous physical activities as part of your duties?” reads one part of the form.

“Astronaut candidates and astronauts live, work, and train in remote, isolated, small, or confined spaces for prolonged periods of time,” reads another. “Are you willing to spend extended periods of time in remote, isolated, small or confined spaces?”

And then there is the one that can cause a lot of candidacies to come undone: “[Astronaut] training requires extensive travel…where family members are not always able to join. Are you willing to participate in extended travel and periods away from home?”

For Glover, who is married and the father of four girls, that question required a lot of thinking. “There is this myth of work-life balance ,” he says. “I don’t use that term. This job changes your life and your relationships forever. Some astronauts have spouses and kids and some don't, but you still have parents and siblings and a whole life to manage.”

Perhaps the most demanding part of the vetting process is the in-person interview with the NASA selection board, a committee of 10 to 12 people made up mostly of astronauts, as well as senior level NASA officials such as flight directors. One of the requirements for that meeting calls for candidates to write a short, one-page narrative on any topic they choose. For this, Glover took a chance, composing an essay he titled “Girls Like Astronauts.” The selection panel did not have to get far into what Glover wrote before realizing that the girls he was writing about were his daughters.

“When you first see the title it’s like, ‘Oh, gosh, what is this about?’” he says. “But then I talk about the romance of space and aviation, that it’s something I get to carry for a while and bring back to my girls. And it just might help them be proud of me.”

Glover took another chance when the board asked him about a mistake he had made in his life and what he learned from it. For a pilot hoping to take the next step up from jets to spacecraft, a near-disaster in the cockpit would seem like a topic to avoid, but Glover had had one such hair-raising episode during his Naval service, and he decided to tell the truth. The incident occurred when he was participating in an air show, flying off of the aircraft carrier George Washington near Japan. Most of the maneuvers the pilots flew were scripted, but Glover chose to improvise on one, flying over the water at 95% of the speed of sound, and then rotating to a nose down position before climbing again. The sky was clear except for one cloud, which turned out to be directly in his path, causing him to fly too low.

“I realized I could see bubbles in the water very clearly,” he says. “I just pulled the stick into my lap and I bottomed out at 32 feet above the water.”

Glover flew back to the carrier, apologized to the commander for what he had conceded was showboating and promised no such thing would ever occur again. A gunnery officer then invited Glover to take a moment of privacy in his office. He accepted and, when he was alone, cried.

“The board isn’t just looking for achievers,” Glover says. “Everyone has messed up in their lives, and it’s how you overcome it and what you learn about yourself that counts.” That bit of candor evidently impressed the selection committee—setting Glover off on a trajectory that, in 18 months, will take him to the moon.

I, almost surely, will not be following. Barely hours after I submitted my application I received a polite acknowledgement from NASA. “Thank you for your interest…and for applying to be an astronaut candidate,” it read. “You have successfully submitted your initial application.”

My success is certain to stop there. Still, we live in a time when even the likes of me can dream a little dream and indulge a little fantasy. Space travel was once the province of only a particular kind of person—a particular kind of man. That, happily, has changed. We don’t all get to fly, but we all get to see ourselves in the people who do.

So you want to be an astronaut.

By Lyle Tavernier

NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins

What does it take to be a NASA astronaut, and how can set yourself on the right trajectory while you're still in school? Here's everything you need to know so you'll be ready to apply when the next opportunity rolls around.

› Read the full press release

Originally published Nov. 4, 2015:

NASA announced that on March 2, 2020, it will open applications to select its next class of astronauts! That news has gotten a lot of people very excited, including some of the best engineers and scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Most people don't think of JPL when they think of astronauts, but everywhere astronauts have been, JPL has sent robotic spacecraft ahead of time. That is true for Earth orbit and the Moon. But it's not just the idea of sending robots to explore new places in preparation for human visits that gets JPL employees excited. Some of these scientists and engineers want to be astronauts too!

Maybe you've seen astronauts working on the International Space Station , or heard about NASA's plans to send humans back to the Moon or maybe you've been following the ongoing  exploration of Mars and want to visit the planet for yourself one day! Whatever your inspiration has been, you know you want to become an astronaut. So how do you get there, and what can you do to make it possible?

Let's start with the basic requirements:

  • Master's degree in a STEM field, or
  • Two years of work toward a Ph.D. program in a related science, technology, engineering or math field;
  • A completed doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree;
  • Completion of a nationally recognized test pilot school program.
  • Two years of related professional experience, or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.
  • Pass the NASA long-duration spaceflight physical.

Not every STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) degree will qualify you to be an astronaut. NASA is looking for people with a degree in engineering, biological science, physical science (like physics, chemistry or geology), computer science or mathematics. If you're in high school, middle school or even elementary school, now is a great time to explore all of these fields of study to help you better understand the ones you like most, the ones for which you might have a natural talent, and even the ones you don't find as interesting.

How do you explore these fields?

If you have the ability to choose your elective classes, take the challenging math, science and computer programming courses. This will help you to learn the fundamentals of science and math. If your school doesn't offer those classes, look online. There are many free online courses covering a wide range of math, science and programming topics.

What else can you do?

  • Join a school or community math, science, engineering or robotics club. If there are none in your school or community, start one!
  • Participate in science and engineering fairs. (There is a great "how to" video series to help you develop your project here .)
  • Attend maker fairs and develop the skills to design solutions to a variety of problems.
  • Plan to apply for an internship at JPL or NASA . You can apply for opportunities as early as your freshman year of college when you are working toward a degree in a STEM major.

These are some of the steps you can take to better prepare yourself as you enter college. They just happen to be some of the same types of things many JPL scientists and engineers did before starting their college careers that led them to a job with NASA.

Dream of Being an Astronaut? You Might Want to Work on Your Handshake

By caitlin schneider | sep 23, 2016.

NASA

To become an astronaut, one has to meet an extraordinary set of standards and excel physically, mentally, and emotionally. They also need to have a firm handshake.

That’s according to YouTube’s SciShow Space , which recently did an installment on the rarely discussed astronaut ability that’s all in the wrist—and the forearm, and the hands. You see, in zero gravity, space travelers don’t have much use for their legs, especially when performing extravehicular activities (EVAs), a.k.a. spacewalks. As SciShow host Caitlin Hofmeister explains, these outings require a ton of strength and agility, and because of friction, sometimes even result in a lost fingernail. In a 2005 NASA study , nearly half of all EVA training-related injuries were in the hands.

To prepare for the grueling nature of EVAs, astronauts train underwater leading up to the mission. They spend hours in a pool with their spacesuits on to simulate the experience of weightlessness, and to help get their muscles ready. They’re not totally without help, though—for one, they’re tethered to the ship. Also, NASA and General Motors have developed a “Robo-Glove” (officially called the Human Grasp Assist device ) which, when responding to pressure from an astronaut hand, can double or even triple the user’s grip strength. (It’s now being applied to factory work as well.)

The Robo-Glove technology could one day even become a complete space suit. So yeah, while astronauts are currently engaged in exhausting, hours-long physical feats, they’re paving the way for a future where superhero-like spacesuits could help us explore the final frontier.

Check out more in the SciShow video below.

Become an astronaut.

NASA astronauts have been traveling to space for more than six decades and living there continuously since 2000. Now, NASA’s Artemis program is preparing to land the first woman and the next man on the Moon. The Orion spacecraft atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will carry humans farther into space than they have gone before—for missions to the Moon and eventually to Mars.

Quick Facts

The term “astronaut” derives from the Greek words meaning “star sailor.”

NASA is accepting applications for astronauts

Astronaut requirements have changed with NASA’s goals and missions. Today, to be considered for an astronaut position, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Have a master’s degree* in a STEM field, including engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics, from an accredited institution.
  • Have a minimum of three years of related professional experience obtained after degree completion (or 1,000 Pilot-in-Command hours with at least 850 of those hours in high performance jet aircraft for pilots) For medical doctors, time in residency can count towards experience and must be completed by June 2025.
  • Be able to successfully complete the NASA long-duration flight astronaut physical.

*The master’s degree requirement can also be met by:

  • Two years of work towards a doctoral program in a related science, technology, engineering, or math field.
  • Completed Doctor of Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, or related medical degree
  • Completion (or current enrollment that will result in completion by June 2025) of a nationally recognized test pilot school program.

Astronaut candidates must also have skills in leadership, teamwork and communications.

Artemis Generation astronauts will explore and conduct experiments where humans have never been: the lunar South Pole.

NASA’s Astronaut Selection Board reviews the applications and assesses each candidate’s qualifications. The board then invites a small group of the most highly qualified candidates for interviews at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Of those interviewed, about half are invited back for second interviews. From that group, NASA’s new astronaut candidates are selected. They report for training at Johnson and spend the next two years learning basic astronaut skills like spacewalking, operating the space station, flying T-38 jet planes and controlling a robotic arm.

With NASA’s plans for the future of exploration, new astronauts will fly farther into space than ever before on lunar missions and may be the first humans to fly on to Mars.

Future Exploration

As NASA continues to expand human exploration in our solar system, we will need more than the currently active astronauts to crew spacecraft bound for deep-space destinations.

NASA’s astronauts currently work as scientists on the International Space Station—a laboratory that orbits Earth approximately 240 miles above the planet’s surface. Astronauts on the station conduct scientific experiments such as innovative cancer research and research on the human body and living in space.

Soon the agency will be expanding its reach to conduct scientific investigations in lunar orbit aboard the Gateway space station, and on the surface of the Moon, as part of the Artemis program. Future astronauts could serve on Artemis missions or even journey to Mars.

Expeditionary Skills

  • Self Care/Team Care
  • Embarking on Pilgrimages
  • The Challenge of the Quest
  • Launching Into Orbit

Expeditions are journeys made by people who share a definite purpose and specific experiences.

To make their expeditions successful, NASA works with astronaut crews on skills that prepare them to live and work together during space missions. Some of these same skills are useful in everyday life here on Earth. 4-H is a positive youth development program that prepares youth for life and work. Together, NASA and 4-H are creating the following series of activities designed to take you through various educational expeditions that will help you learn and practice skills that you can apply in almost every aspect of life.

NASA astronaut Kayla Barron participates in T-38 preflight training at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas.

Self Care/Team Care: Preparing for the Voyage

Before you can contribute to a team, you must first be able to take responsibility for yourself.

This ability includes being mentally, physically and emotionally ready to go on the voyage. Everyone has the occasional difficult day, so knowing how to support your team members is also important. This section will strengthen your ability to care for yourself and your team.

A man in a blue astronaut jumpsuit with the words - Expeditionary Skils, Team Care, Self Care

Cultural Competency: Embarking on Pilgrimages

Pilgrimages are searches that help people understand their personal beliefs and recognize how and why they have those beliefs.

The activities in this section take you beyond your own beliefs and teach you how to understand, appreciate and value the beliefs of others. Only in creating paths that allow the team to work together can you move forward in your expeditions.

Leadership/Followership: The Challenge of the Quest

Lots of people like to be the leader, but leaders need a team to follow them.

Different quests require different skills, which means different types of leaders are needed throughout an expedition. Understanding when to lead and when to follow, and the importance of both roles, will be explored in this section

Do you dream of becoming an astronaut? Have you been inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landings or Tim Peake’s experiences on the International Space Station (ISS)? In this new series we uncover how to make your dream job a reality, whilst giving you some great alternatives to consider.

my dream job astronaut essay

Astronaut is one of the most competitive careers in the world. Although it’s great to have a goal, this article will also tell you about alternative careers to consider. The good news is that the UK is a world leader in the space sector; it directly employs almost 42,000 people and there are predicted to be more opportunities in the future.

What is involved?

Astronauts travel into space; those who work on the ISS do stints of six months or more. Astronauts take on different roles according to their skills. There may be opportunities, for instance, for those with a background in medicine or piloting military jets.

While in space, an astronaut’s schedule is mapped out for them. They may:

  • command or pilot the spacecraft
  • unload and install equipment and supplies
  • check and maintain water systems, oxygen levels, air filters and waste processors
  • conduct scientific experiments
  • be a subject in experiments to investigate the impact of space on the human body
  • go on spacewalks to repair damage
  • provide data, reports and test results for colleagues back on Earth.

Microgravity means that eating, washing and sleeping are difficult, so these can take up much of an astronaut’s time. They also have to spend a couple of hours each day exercising to stop their muscles from wasting and to minimise the loss of bone mass.

Astronauts spend years training before going into space, and they have to maintain their skills and support other missions when on Earth. They also have a role to play in promoting the space sector, especially to young people.

Do you have what it takes?

Not surprisingly, astronauts need a range of skills, capabilities and characteristics. Those selected must be in excellent physical and mental health. They also need:

  • technological and scientific skills
  • analytical and reasoning skills
  • leadership ability
  • teamworking skills
  • physical coordination and dexterity
  • good judgement and decision-making skills
  • to cope well under pressure and in confined spaces
  • concentration and observational skills.

Space travel is an international effort, so the ability to speak a foreign language, especially Russian, is an asset.

How to become an astronaut

The  European Space Agency (ESA) very occasionally recruits astronauts. Competition is fierce – Tim Peak, Britain’s first ESA astronaut, beat thousands of other hopefuls! Helen Sharman is the only other Brit to have gone into space under the UK flag.

Applicants for astronaut training need to have studied a scientific or technical subject to at least master’s degree level followed by three plus years’ experience. So you would be at least 27 by the time you would be ready to apply.

The UK Space Agency is a member of ESA, so if you think you have what it takes, check the ESA website to find out if/when they are recruiting and to apply directly.

After a rigorous selection process , there’s a year’s basic training, a year’s advanced training and then mission-specific training (although there’s no guarantee of getting to this stage). The training is tailored and may take place anywhere in the world.

Related careers

The space industry has many opportunities which could act as a stepping-stone towards becoming an astronaut, or as an alternative career.

Employers in the space sector include:

  • commercial space companies – from those designing spacecraft instruments to companies working on plans for commercial space travel
  • government departments and agencies, e.g. the UK Space Agency
  • universities, including major research centres such as Jodrell Bank , run by the University of Manchester
  • government-funded research centres, e.g. the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the UK Astronomy Technology Centre .

It would be impossible to list all the careers available in the space sector, but the following gives you an idea of the range:

  • engineers design and develop components, systems and software used on spacecraft, satellites and probes; experts are needed in mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, propulsion, robotics, software…
  • astronomers and astrophysicists use the principles and laws of physics to explain how planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies and so on are formed and function
  • astrobiologists examine how organisms react to different environments and assess the possibility of life in space
  • Earth observation scientists use remote sensors to gather data and images to analyse the impact of climate change etc.
  • planetary scientists study planets and moons to learn about their composition and formation
  • technicians support engineers and scientists and may be involved in research, assembly work, testing and maintenance.

You can find more on these and other careers on SpaceCareers.uk .

For entry to most space careers you need a degree. There are specialist courses, e.g. in aerospace engineering, astrophysics, and Earth and planetary science, but you can take a broader-based science or technical degree and specialise at postgraduate level. Check the entry requirements for degree courses.

Apprenticeships, including Degree Apprenticeships or Graduate Apprenticeships can provide an entry route into some areas of work.

How to get experience

For any career in the sector, do all you can to stand out from the crowd. Try to get relevant experience by approaching employers in the space sector . Participate in taster days, competitions, space schools and astronomy camps. The National Space Academy offers masterclasses and  careers activities . UKSEDS – UK Students for the Exploration and Development of Space also runs a wide range of activities.

There are websites where you can find out more about careers in space, including SpaceCareers.uk , Future Morph  and Careers in Aerospace .

Becoming an astronaut may seem like an unrealistic dream, but for a few it can become a reality. It’s important to remember that for every astronaut there are thousands of people supporting their mission and the space sector offers all sorts of exciting opportunities.

Essays About Dream Jobs: 6 Essay Examples Plus Prompts

If you are writing essays about dream jobs, read our essay examples and topic ideas to give you some inspiration.

What are the typical dream jobs that our friends say when we are young? “I want to become a successful actor!” or “I want to be a doctor to help people!” It might be painful to hear these words more often than not, but dreams are just dreams. Some will surely make it, but some will not due to several factors.

We’ve encountered people who shared their stories of determination and perseverance to achieve their goals. Some individuals choose to stop pursuing their dream job for their family or personal reasons. The most heartbreaking ones are those who realize that their dream job is not how they imagined it.

If you are writing an essay about dream jobs, here are 5 essay examples to help you write an insightful piece.

1. The Secret To Happiness At Work by Arthur C. Brooks

2. 10 things i wish i knew before pursuing my dream job by erin sullivan, 3. can a dream job become a nightmare by daisy buchanan, 4. a moment that changed me: i lost my dream job – and found unexpected success by david barnett, 5. even with a dream job, you can be antiwork by farhad manjoo, 6. when you have to quit your dream job to pursue your dream by laura yan, 1. what is your dream job, 2. how to land your dream job, 3. challenges in landing your dream job, 4. what do you want to accomplish in your dream job, 5. social challenges when pursuing your dream job, 6. dream job vs. high-paying job.

“ They find this statistic surprising because, like so many of us, they generally assume that to be satisfied, you must hold your dream job—one where your skills meet your passions, you make good money, and you are excited to get to work each day. No way 89 percent of people have this, right? ”

In his piece published by The Atlantic, Brooks questioned the concept of equivalence between having your dream job and being happy at work. He finds that satisfaction in an occupation boils down to three things – a sense of accomplishment, recognition, and work-life balance. Check out these essays about dreams and sleep .

“ Passion and drive will never fully soften stress or worry. It’s still work, and as a result, it still feels like work. When you do what you love, you’ll work many days in your life– it’ll just be more enjoyable. ”

Professional photographer Erin Sullivan reminds us that having your dream job doesn’t mean that everything will be easy. It will still require an amount of work and dedication. Believe it or not, there will still be challenges you have to overcome to succeed.

“I was still depending on someone else – my manager – to validate me and grant me eternal happiness, just like that perfect grade had been supposed to. Eventually, I quit that coveted role, having recognised that even in our biggest and best dreams, we can feel powerless and unhappy.”

Daisy Buchanan shares two stories – one from personal experience and another from her friend, Lizzie – which relays how being passionate about your dream job can increase being exploited at the office. Thankfully, the essay has a happy ending for both of them, as they can venture out into different roads and find that dreams are about more than work.

“I was devastated, as if a partner I had devoted myself to for more than a quarter of a century had suddenly told me they didn’t love me any more. I felt a crashing sense of impostor syndrome. Had I been fooling myself all these years? Was I not as good as I thought? Had I finally been found out?”

For an award-winning journalist like Barnett, losing his dream job after 26 years in the industry felt like the world’s end. As an unemployed 45-year-old with bills to pay and a family to provide for, the future looked terrifying. However, he was still good at writing, and an opportunity to utilize that came knocking at his door, which gave him a shot to pursue his dream job once again.

“It’s just that I now have space in my mind for a truth that my pre-pandemic workaholism never allowed me to consider — that even a dream job is still a job, and in America’s relentless hustle culture, we have turned our jobs into prisons for our minds and souls. It’s time to break free.”

Written in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, this New York Times opinion essay by Manjoo tackled how the pandemic transformed the American workforce’s way of thinking when it comes to jobs. Suddenly, a new opportunity for workers to get better compensation is at hand, and they quickly realize that there’s more to life than toiling day and night at work.

“Anger wouldn’t work, but silence wouldn’t, either. I thought about what I always valued: being honest, true to myself, my values. Speaking up even when it was hard. I was a bold and ambitious journalist, but in this office, that part of me had gone silent. I couldn’t let it be silent anymore.”

Everything was going well for Yan. She got her dream job with great pay, which allowed her to get a nice residence in New York and buy furniture for the first time. Everything clicked until it didn’t. In this piece, Yan chronicled how her seemingly perfect career turned into a nightmare and how she managed to cope after leaving it all behind.

Essay Prompts About Dream Jobs

Here are some essay prompts about the topic that might assist you in composing your piece.

Essays About Dream Jobs: What is your dream job?

You might be the one who was able to pursue the career you’ve been aiming for your whole life or the one who held it off either because of personal priorities or several other factors. In your essay, share what you aspired to become when you were young and try to look back on when you realized it. Finally, discuss how it influenced your life as you grew older.

You’ve managed to land your dream job and want to share the things you’ve learned to the new or up-and-coming graduates. Share the actions you undertook to increase their chances of joining you in the field. Did you build your network by attending conferences and talks, or by excelling during your internship? Talk about the attributes they should be looking for in a company, and consequently, what information should they include in their resume if they plan to apply. You can also include how to negotiate for the right compensation. Create a step-by-step instruction in essay form.

There are many reasons for a person to consider not pursuing their dream job. Is it because of financial constraints? Is it because of social and environmental factors? Ask yourself why some people stray off course in pursuing their passion. Discuss these challenges and obstacles and put in your two cents on how they’ll be able to overcome it.

If you’re stuck picking an essay topic, check out our guide on how to write essays about depression .

You pursued your dream job because you wanted to achieve something in the field. For example, did you become a doctor to be the first to cure cancer, or perhaps a lawyer who wanted to champion the poor? Talk about your primary motivation in getting your dream job and trying to insert what the future of your industry holds.

Trace your steps from when you’ve decided to go for your dream job. Write an essay sharing how your parents took this information. Did they support you or receive pushback? Share what you felt the first time you took a step into college surrounded by colleagues with the same aspirations. Was the competition friendly or fierce? Additionally, try to weigh the efficacy of joining a study group or studying alone.

If there are any, go through the time when you encountered pressure from family or peers and share a lesson or two on how to control those moments of hesitation.

Consider writing an argumentative essay based on this dilemma. For example, try to talk to people who have chosen passion over money and vice-versa and dive into their level of contentment. Were they happy with the choice they made? Were there moments of regret, and would you have chosen differently? By the end, assess your situation and decide where you’ll stand if you were given this option.

Essay Writing

Having a goal or aim in life is very important, it gives our life a purpose and direction. While growing up every person dreams about what they want to become in the future. Almost all of us think about our dream job and what our life will look like after we start to work in that job. Like other people, I also have the ambition to become a medical doctor one day.  As a kid, I was always influenced and inspired by doctors. The most prominent reason I chose this as my dream career is that I want to help humanity by caring for their physical health. In this dream career essay, I will discuss how and why I chose to become a medical doctor.

My Dream Job Essay Example – 700 Word Long Essay

According to American author, Suzy Kassem, “A heart without dreams is like a bird without feathers” .  This shows how important aim and ambition are in life. Our goals in life give us direction and purpose. A bird cannot fly without feathers and a person cannot flourish in life without any aim. As kids, we all had different ideas about what we wanted to become in our professional life. Unlike the past when everyone only wanted to become doctors, engineers, and lawyers things have now changed. Nowadays people want to become singers, artists, poets, musicians, and whatnot. I also have an ambition in life and that is to become a medical doctor, just not some ordinary doctor. I want to be a cardiologist who specializes in studies of the heart. This is my dream career because it will enable me to help humanity by healing their hearts.

When I was young I wanted to be an astronaut until one day when I realized that people are dying every day because there are very few doctors. On top of that, the cardiologists were even lesser. Good cardiologists at that time were not enough to attend to the heart problems of a population that big. Because of this lack of good doctors cardiologists only attended to patients who paid more money for their services and the poor patients were dying without anybody taking care of them. My grandmother was also a heart patient and one day she died of a heart attack because my father was unable to pay the doctor’s fee for heart surgery. That day I made a promise to myself that I will become a cardiologist to help the poor and needy people.

Another thing I like about this profession is that medical doctors work like scientists and discoverers. They do deep research and experiment to help patients suffering from different problems. They attend different seminars and learn all the time. I find all these tasks very exciting and challenging. I believe that when I become a cardiologist I would enjoy performing these tasks which will provide me with job satisfaction. A medical profession like being a doctor is considered the noblest job as compared to other professions. There is a huge demand for good cardiologists all around the world which also means that I will be able to live a luxurious life.

Nowadays as a teenager, I am in the company of a very intelligent academic expert who is also a great teacher, mentor, and role model for me. He is none other than my father who is also a surgeon by profession. At one point when I became scared of the long struggle to become a doctor, my father told me how to face challenges and not to run away from them. He motivated me to set my own goals and gain knowledge to pursue my ultimate goal. Now under the influence of a good teacher in my college who is offering all professional help, I am confident about achieving my career and dreams. The most important thing to me at this time is my passion and desire to achieve this dream. I know I have to work hard to achieve this dream job.

I plan to pay more attention to my education and practice researching as well. I plan to be active in school and participate in programs that give information about how to enter and survive in the health sector. I also wish to voluntarily participate in health centers to support our community. With these plans, I hope that step by step I can be successful in achieving my dream job. I also know that getting the best medical education can put a financial strain on me, therefore I plan to get a job while studying to meet my financial needs. I am willing to do all this so that no poor heart patient that I know of will die from heart problems like my grandmother.

In conclusion, my dream job is more than gaining a position of power, respect, or financial stability. My dream job is to help humanity and especially poor patients by treating them with the respect all humans deserve.

My Dream To Become A Doctor – 300 Word Short  Essay Sample Sample

We all have dreams and ambitions while growing up. Every one of us wants to become like those who inspire and motivate us in life. Just like Martin Luther King who fought for the rights of black people I also have a dream. However, my dream is about my future profession. Like many people nowadays I also want to become a medical doctor. The most important thing for choosing this profession is to help humanity and fulfill the ever-growing need for doctors in our community. In this essay, I will discuss why I chose the doctor profession as a dream career for me.

I want to pursue this career because of an experience I had some years ago. My grandmother died from Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). She used to experience severe chest pain, breathing problems, and nausea but no cardiologist attended to her because my father did not have any money back then. I loved her with all my heart but I could not do anything for her at that time. When she passed away I made a promise to myself that I will help all poor people and will not charge them money. This sad event changed my life for the better. Career-wise now I have an aim in life with a passion to pursue it with all my heart.

I know that becoming a doctor is not easy, that is why I am studying hard to achieve this life goal. My mother and teachers always taught me that with passion, hard work, and motivation every goal can be achieved. This is why I am working day and night to become a better student. I also want to become a doctor because it is the noblest job that can help me have a fulfilling career. Doctors nowadays can also afford all luxuries and still help the people in need by giving them money and free services. So, these are some of the reasons why my dream job is to become a doctor.

This aspect of engineering, the capacity to make a positive difference in the world, is particularly appealing to me.

My Vision as an Engineer

As an aspiring engineer, I envision using my skills and knowledge to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. Whether it’s combating climate change through sustainable engineering practices, improving infrastructure in underserved communities, or developing technologies that enhance our quality of life, I aspire to contribute meaningfully to society.

In conclusion, my dream job as an engineer is driven by a passion for innovation, a desire to solve complex problems, and a commitment to positive societal impact. Engineering, with its blend of creativity and science, offers a fulfilling and dynamic career. It provides an opportunity to shape the world, make a tangible difference, and continually engage in learning and growth. This is why I aspire to become an engineer, to be at the forefront of change and progress.

What are you reading?

I am drawn to biographies and autobiographies. I recently finished reading Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. It is a humorous take on his difficult life in South Africa during apartheid, where being mixed race meant not belonging. It is also about the strength of a mother’s love. I am now reading Confidence Man , a book about Donald Trump by Maggie Haberman. She had intimate access to some key moments during his run for office and time as president.

What is your favorite website?

I probably spend the most time on finviz.com . It is a finance site that allows you to screen the stock universe for key metrics. You can then analyze key financial information for the subset of companies (discounted cash flow analysis). Finally, you can analyze the technical stock movement for key entry and exit points.

What is your dream job?

I will start out by saying that I do love what I do now. The autonomy of the job and joy of meeting so many new people each year make this such a great career. However, if we are talking about the ultimate dream job, I think traveling the world as a travel vlogger would be a great way to marry my love of travel with my desire to still connect with people wanting to learn.

I recently re-read Mrs. Kennedy and Me , written by Clint Hill, who was Jackie Kennedy’s personal Secret Service agent during her time as first lady. Although originally dismayed he was not assigned to President Kennedy’s Secret Service detail, Hill developed a close and trusted relationship with the first lady. His poignant stories about life with Jackie Kennedy provide a close-up view of one of the most famous women of the 20th century.

My favorite website is bogleheads.com , a personal finance site. The website provides information and advice on investing based on the principles of John Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group and creator of the first index mutual fund. The site promotes passive investing using index funds as opposed to active trading of individual stocks.

Starting college as a business major, I wanted to be the first female CEO of a major company. At the time, there were very few women in business schools and even fewer in top business positions. Then, I got a job as a teaching assistant and my dream changed to getting into a top PhD program and becoming a business professor . Looking back, I’m sure I picked the right dream, although I wouldn’t mind having access to a corporate jet!

Salman Arif

Associate Professor, Accounting

Salman Arif

I’m “reading” (OK, listening) to the autobiographies of Trevor Noah, Born a Crime , and Michelle Obama, Becoming . These audiobooks are magical. Both are narrated by the authors and it feels as if I’m sitting across from these trailblazing stars in my home as they tell me the story of their lives. I can’t recommend these books enough—they are by turns hilarious, inspiring, and touching!

Audible.com . Several years ago, I discovered the joy of audiobooks and now I’m a devotee of the format. Thanks to audiobooks, I’ve traveled to new countries and planets while doing laundry and taking out the trash. I’m always on the lookout for new titles!

Astronaut . I haven’t given up on my dream, so if the Carlson School of Management ever establishes a space campus, I’ll be first in line!

Beth Campbell

Associate Professor, Work & Organizations

Beth Campbell

For evidenced-based non-fiction, I’m fortunate that many friends and mentors write great books! Recently, I read three of theirs: The Power of Saying No by Vanessa Patrick, Hidden Potential by Adam Grant, and The Coachable Leader by Carlson School Senior Lecturer Kevin Wilde. I also love Heather Cox Richardson’s Letters From An American , a semi-regular newsletter contextualized with historical expertise and not editorialized. For fiction: Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo and The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn.

For news, The Daily . For boosts in productivity, ChatGPT . For dips in productivity, The Bond Between (formerly known as Secondhand Hounds)—a Minnesotan nonprofit that works with fosters to rehabilitate and find great homes for animals.

This is an impossible question for someone who studies jobs and work for a living! With sincerity, I’m delighted with the job I have —a professional nerd who gets to study psychological phenomena in the workplace and teach MBA students. If you really forced me to choose another, maybe a hiking guide in Utah or a human rights lawyer.

My Dream Job: Paleontologist

My Dream Job: Paleontologist

The writer’s dream job is to become a Paleontologist, as they find it interesting, fun and adventurous to understand the history of life on earth. However, they are unable to pursue this career due to several reasons. They are not good at Math, which is a requirement for this field, and Paleontology courses are not offered in their country. Studying abroad is the only option, but they cannot afford it. Additionally, limited job opportunities in this field make it difficult for the writer to pursue their dream job.

For the first time, I’ve written a brief paragraph about my dream job as my writing exercise. Can someone check this for me, please? I always wanted to become a Paleontologist. I found this job was very interesting, fun and quite adventurous. I love to understand all the history of life on earth and I think it would be amazing if we can find out what really happened on earth in the earlier days. Unfortunately, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to reach my dream job because of several reasons.

When I was in school, although I loved all those science subjects, I’m not really into Mathematic (which is one of the important subjects of requirement). Besides, I found out that Paleontology Course hadn’t been offered in any universities in my country. The only way to further studies in this field was by studying abroad, which I knew I couldn’t afford it. Other than that, limited job opportunities also made me realized that this job would be always remains in my dreams ever since.
