NewJeans (NWJNS; 뉴진스) is a 5-member multinational girl group under ADOR , part of HYBE Labels. Their members are Hanni, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. They debuted on August 1, 2022 with their self-titled album NewJeans.

The name of the group, NewJeans , is meant to describe how the group will lead a new trend. Similar to jeans, which are loved by people of all ages and are trendy, the group will become an icon of this era. The name is also a wordplay on the phrase new genes. 2019–2022: pre-debut [ ].

On July 1, 2019, HYBE (then-known as Big Hit) announced that Min Hee Jin would join the company as their new CBO (Chief Brand Officer), and one of her tasks was to lead a girl group project between HYBE and Source Music . [2] [3]

On September 4, 2019, the Plus Global Auditions were announced. Auditions were held in 16 cities and lasted until the end of October. [4] By the end of 2019, casting had been completed and training began at the beginning of 2020. [5] By September 2021, the girl group's management was transferred to ADOR. [6]

On November 21, 2021, HYBE officially announced the launch of a new independent label, ADOR, under the agency. The label planned to launch a new girl group in 2022 and would mainly be produced by the label's CEO, Min Hee Jin, and primarily consist of members recruited during HYBE's Plus Global Audition in 2019. [7]

On March 3, 2022, Min Hee Jin revealed that the girl group's debut will specifically be in the third quarter of the year. [8]

2022: Debut with New Jeans [ ]

On July 1, the first teaser videos were released and it was also announced that the group would release their first content on the 22nd. [9] On July 22, the group released the debut music video for their lead single "Attention" and the debut schedule for their first EP, New Jeans . [10] Teaser photos were released that same day. [11] The music videos for "Hype Boy" and "Hurt" were released on July 23 and July 25, respectively. On July 28, ADOR announced that as of July 27, New Jeans had surpassed 444,000 stock pre-orders, the highest number achieved by any girl group debut album in history. [12]

On August 1, the group's debut EP was released digitally, along with the music video for "Cookie." NewJeans then held their debut stage on the August 4 broadcast of Mnet's M! Countdown , performing three of their tracks, "Attention", "Hype Boy", and "Cookie." [13] On August 18, the group took their first-ever music show win on the August 18 broadcast of M! Countdown . 2023: First comeback with "OMG", "Zero", "New Jeans", "Super Shy", Get Up , "Gods", NJWMX [ ]

On October 18, 2022, ADOR announced that NewJeans was preparing for their first-ever comeback. [15] A month later, on November 10, it was announced that the group will release their first single album, " OMG ", on January 2. On December 19, NewJeans released a pre-release single, " Ditto ", prior to their first single album, OMG, released on January 2, 2023. [16] [17] "OMG "passed the first-week sales of their first EP in just one day and sold more than one million copies in less than a month since it's release. [18] [19]

On March 31, ADOR announced that NewJeans will be releasing the promotional single " Zero " as part of Coca-Cola 's Korean campain on April 3. [20]

On April 4, in an exclusive Star News reported that NewJeans will be releasing a pre-release single in June and an album in July. Hours later, ADOR responded to the reports and stated that the group are preparing for a comeback, but the date has yet to be set. [21]

On May 23, News1 reported that NewJeans will be releasing a pre-release single on July 7 and an album later that month. [22] Hours later, ADOR confirmed the reports. [23] On June 18, it was announced via the group's Twitter account that their second EP, Get Up , will be released on July 21. The songs " New Jeans " and " Super Shy " was pre-released on July 7. On August 24, Netflix announced that NewJeans will be releasing a remake of the 1996 song by Kim Jong Seo , "아름다운 구속", as part of the soundtrack for their upcoming drama A Time Called You . [26]

On September 27, it was announced that NewJeans will be releasing " Gods ", the theme song for the 2023 League of Legends World Championship , on October 4. [27]

On December 15, it was announced that NewJeans will be releasing the remix album NJWMX on December 19. [28]

2024: "Bubble Gum", upcoming comeback, "Right Now", Japanese debut [ ]

On March 26, 2024, NewJeans announced that they will pre-release " Bubble Gum " as a commercial song in April before releasing a double single on May 24. Additionally, the group will make their Japanese debut on June 21 with another double single. " Right Now " will be pre-released in May as a commercial song. NewJeans will also release a new album in the second half of 2024 and plan to start a world tour in 2025. [29]

Meet NewJeans, the K-pop girl group that's broken a Guinness World Record, clinched luxury brand deals, and gone viral on TikTok — all in less than a year

• NewJeans is the latest K-pop group to break a Guinness World Record.
• The quintet debuted last July, but has already clinched deals with various luxury brands.
• Their songs have also been going viral on TikTok, where #NewJeans has over 13.4 billion views.

Since their debut on July 21 with "Attention," the quintet has been receiving endless attention from all four corners of the globe.

NewJeans is the latest K-pop girl group to break the Guinness World Record for "Fastest K-pop act to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify." They pulled it off in 219 days, unseating BTS , the band that pulled off the same with Jungkook in 409 days.

With just seven songs in their discography, they have gone viral multiple times on TikTok, where the hashtag #NewJeans has racked up over 13.4 billion views.

A few of their songs, namely " OMG ," " Hype Boy ," and " Ditto ," have been used in over a million TikTok videos combined. 

Despite being less than one year old, the group has also been clinching brand deals left, right, and center — each member is currently a brand ambassador of at least one luxury brand.

NewJeans is under a South Korean record label ADOR , which was launched as an independent label by HYBE, the company that houses the K-pop superhit BTS.

All five members of the group are younger than 20, the oldest being 19 and the youngest just 15.

Kim Min-ji, was born and raised in Chuncheon City, South Korea, before moving to Seoul in middle school, per a South Korean TV interview .

As the oldest member of the group, Minji turned 19 on May 7.

The 19-year-old was also appointed the global ambassador of Chanel, per Elle Korea in an Instagram announcement on February 13.

Minji participated in writing the lyrics for "Ditto," one of NewJeans' viral TikTok songs.

In July 2021, she also appeared in BTS' music video for " Permission to Dance ," alongside fellow member Hanni.

In the TV interview, Minji shared that the group practiced "Attention" for two years prior to its release in 2022. 

"Even though we practiced it for two years, we never got sick of it," Minji said in the interview.

Hanni Pham is Vietnamese-Australian and the only non-Korean member of NewJeans. The 18-year-old will turn 19 in October.

Hanni was born in Vietnam, but raised in Australia, per Nylon . She is also fluent in English, Korean, and Vietnamese.

She was recently named the global makeup ambassador for Armani Beauty, per Lifestyle Asia .

In October last year, Gucci appointed Hanni as its brand ambassador, per WWD .

"Hanni's take on music and fashion style truly encompasses the brand's motif of embracing authentic individuality and self-expression," Gucci told WWD.

The singer became an idol trainee after passing the Plus Global Audition in 2019 , where she played Dodie Clock's " Would You Be So Kind " on the ukelele.

Pre-debut, Hanni also used to perform K-pop dance covers with her friends as a Melbourne-based dance crew "Aemina Dance Crew."

She first got into K-pop in 2013 when she watched a YouTube reaction video to K-pop group Girls' Generation's "I Got A Boy."

Danielle Marsh or Mo Ji-hye, was born in the Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, to an Australian dad and Korean mom.

The 18-year-old was named the global ambassador for Burberry and YSL Beauty in January and March respectively, per Hypebae.

Like Hanni, Danielle also passed the Plus Global Audition in 2019 which secured her spot as an idol trainee prior to NewJeans' 2022 debut.

Known as the funny one in the team, Danielle appeared on a South Korean TV program " Rainbow Kindergarten " when she was six, where she's frequently shown giggling in front of the camera. 

As a kid, she also made other regular TV appearances , in addition to being a child model.

On April 26, Dior named Haerin the house ambassador for jewelry, fashion, and beauty, per WWD .

In a South Korean TV interview , Haerin shared that she was inspired to become a singer because of how listeners could use music to relate.

"I think it's not easy to deliver your emotions with your own song," said Haerin, who's known as the softspoken introvert of the group according to the other members and fans .

"I like to listen to other people's stories. I tend to focus on listening so I can sympathize with them and through that I can also feel emotions that I haven't felt before," Haerin told GQ Korea last year, per K-pop news outlet Koreaboo .

Hyein turned 15 on April 21, making her the youngest member of the quintet. She is from the North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea.

On December 30, Hyein was named brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton, per Korea JoongAng Daily.

After receiving her first paycheck two months post-debut, Hyein spent $70 on keychains, according to a TV interview .

"I felt so proud to buy the keychains because I've always wanted to buy them but I felt bad towards my mom, so I couldn't," said the 15-year-old in the interview.

In 2020, she also appeared on a South Korean TV show "Pocket TV" as part of the "Play With Me Club," where Hyein expressed her passion to perform as a K-pop idol.

She's also a huge BTS fan, and has a sizable BTS merchandise collection — which she showed in a vlog on the TV program — including a couple of framed photos of BTS' V and Suga, as well as numerous photocards of the members.

Even if you’ve never heard of them, you’ve probably heard one of their songs on Instagram or TikTok.

NewJeans have taken the K-pop world by storm since making their debut in July. Made up of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein, the five members range in age from 14 to 18. They wear Y2K-influenced outfits and have been praised for their unique throwback sound, with some comparing it to 2000s RnB and pop music.

Since their surprise debut, they’ve already released five singles, with four of them ( Attention , Hype Boy , Ditto and OMG ) reaching the top of Billboard's South Korea Songs chart. Earlier this month, they became the first K-pop female act to sell more than one million copies of a debut album.

Here’s what to know about them.

What makes NewJeans unique?

In an unusual move for the K-pop industry, there was little promotion about the newly formed girl group ahead of their debut.

Their label Ador, a subsidiary of Hybe Corporation, which is behind BTS, released three animated videos 22, 7, and 22 on social media with speculation that an announcement would come. Instead, it was the music video for the group’s unannounced debut single, Attention .

The surprise release was an anomaly as no other K-pop band had been introduced to the world in such a way.

The video reached more than 1.3 million views in less than 24 hours and was followed by the group’s second single Hype Boy , the next day. There was also an accompanying 50-second clip that introduced each member.

On August 1, they released their self-titled EP album NewJeans .

What does NewJeans mean?

According to the group’s website, NewJeans has a double meaning. One of them is in reference to jeans being timeless pieces of clothing with each generation having its own emblematic new style.

“Pop music, like clothing, is a part of culture that is inseparable from our everyday lives,” said Min Hee-jin, chief executive and head producer at Ador. "Just as jeans have withstood the test of time and found popularity among many regardless of their age and gender, NewJeans aspire to become an icon of generations — one you never grow tiresome of putting on."

The other meaning is that NewJeans is a wordplay on “new genes” and the idea the band will help usher in a new generation of K-pop music, which they seem to be proving they are capable of doing.

Who are the members?

Minji is the oldest of the group at 18 and a former trainee from JYP Entertainment (the agency behind groups such as Stray Kids and Twice). She was also in the BTS music video for Permission to Dance in 2021, along with Haerin, 16. Danielle, 17, is Korean-Australian, while Hanni, 18, is Vietnamese-Australian. Both trained for two and a half years prior to their debut with NewJeans. Hyein is the youngest member at 14.

While most K-pop groups tend to have leaders and positions assigned (such as vocalist or dancer), it appears that NewJeans will forgo that format as previously announced on their app "Phoning", meaning all members will perform in equal and various roles.

What's next for NewJeans?

While they aren't yet headlining Coachella like Blackpink or selling out arenas worldwide like BTS, NewJeans have shown tremendous promise in the little time they've been together. They made their first international performance with a set at KCON Saudi Arabia in Riyadh in October, much to the delight of K-pop fans in the region.

In addition to their music, the members have already individually branched out into the lifestyle realm by partnering with luxury brands. Minji was recently named as Chanel’s newest global ambassador and will represent the French luxury house in three categories: fashion, watches and beauty.

Hanni has been selected as the global makeup ambassador for Armani Beauty, while Hyein and Danielle are ambassadors for Louis Vuitton and Burberry. Haerin has yet to announce a collaboration but, based on past outings, Dior could be a potential partnership.

While new K-pop groups seemingly arrive every other day, NewJeans look poised to stay with their concept and nostalgic sound that can unite young and older fans alike. During an interview with the newspaper Korea JoongAng Daily , Min explained her idea behind NewJeans was to try something more innovative.

"I envision NewJeans as a truly ‘whimsical’ group — not whimsical just for the sake of being quirky, but trying out what hasn’t been done in K-pop even though it should have been,” she said.

“The members are ready to go on an adventure with me," she added. "If things go as planned, it [their next release] will also be a very whimsical album.”

The girl group ushering in a new era for K-pop has secured numerous luxury brand ambassadorships while upending the style template for the musical genre.

Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein form NewJeans, the K-pop girl group sensation whose rise up the charts with hit singles like “Hype Boy” and “Attention” can only be described as meteoric. Having formed in mid-2022, the South Korean group hit 1 billion streams on Spotify in just 219 days, the fastest K-pop act to do so.  In Korea, the girls have appeared on numerous solo covers of major fashion titles like the local editions of Vogue , Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire , and the band’s Instagram followers ballooned from 3 million in May 2023 to nearly 10 million in September. By then, they had collectively inked a global ambassadorship with Levi’s and were appointed ambassadors for Seoul Fashion Week. Individually, Minji is an ambassador for Chanel in three divisions: fashion, beauty, and watches and jewellery, Hanni represents Gucci and Armani Beauty, Hyein works with Louis Vuitton, and Danielle was tapped by Burberry and YSL Beauty.

Who's Behind @Middle7? NewJeans seeks US Court aid to Reveal YouTuber's Identity so they can sue them

On April 10, The New York Times reported that NewJeans ' label ADOR  is seeking help from a California federal court for a defamation lawsuit.

According to the report, ADOR has requested that a California federal court order Google (the parent company of YouTube ) to reveal the identity of an anonymous YouTuber going by the username @Middle7 . This YouTuber has been making defamatory videos about NewJeans and some of the videos have gained millions of views.

NewJeans attorney Eugene Kim  explained that the account has been name-calling and other mocking behavior through the videos and continuously inflicted damage to the group's reputation.

The group has already filed a criminal complaint in South Korea; however, were unable to proceed with the lawsuit due to the anonymity of @Middle7. Therefore, ADOR has made its move to request the federal courts in the United States to aid with identifying the user.

American defamation laws are much stricter than Korean ones, in the sense that it's much harder to win a defamation case in the United States than it is in Korea. Also, public figures have a much higher threshold for proving that they have been defamed here in the US. Just having a negative opinion about a celebrity isn't enough.

If that user is an American citizen posting from an American IP address, it's going to be very difficult to make a case for why that person should be held accountable under Korean law.

I don't think that's how it works...

K-Pop Group Asks U.S. Court for Help Finding YouTube User in Defamation Case

The request by NewJeans is the latest effort by the K-pop industry in its struggle to stem rumors on platforms based outside South Korea.

NewJeans, one of the biggest K-pop acts, has asked a federal court in California to order Google to release the identity of the person behind a YouTube account that the members say is spreading defamatory statements about them.

The group said that a YouTube user with the handle @Middle7 made the statements in dozens of videos that were viewed more than 13 million times, according to the court filing. The group’s lawyer, Eugene Kim, wrote that the account had also engaged in “name-calling or other mocking behavior” targeting NewJeans. The videos “continue to inflict significant reputational damage,” according to the filing.

The move, made on March 27, is the latest example of K-pop stars responding to the pressures they face from the fervid online fan culture in South Korea. The request, if granted, would allow the group to sue the YouTube user in South Korea for defamation and insult, which are criminal offenses in the country.

“We regularly take legal action for violations of artists’ rights,” Ador, the management agency for NewJeans, said in a statement, confirming that it was pursuing a case against the videos.

Mun Hui Kim, a lawyer representing NewJeans in South Korea, declined to comment. Google did not respond to requests for comment. The YouTube account’s owner could not be reached.

NewJeans, which has five members, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 list last year with its second album, “Get Up,” as part of the newest generation of South Korean girl groups dominating K-pop.

South Korean stars have long been exposed to floods of hateful comments and cyberbullying regarding their looks, singing skills and their private lives. Their managers have in turn zealously guarded the stars’ reputations, often using defamation suits that lead investigators to identify and arrest those social media users in South Korea.

But hateful and defamatory statements have been difficult to patrol on social media platforms operated outside of South Korea, according to Kyongsok Chong, a South Korean lawyer who successfully obtained information about another YouTube account through the same court, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, last year.

The South Korean authorities are better able to identify users on domestic platforms like Naver and Kakao, said Chong, who represents Starship Entertainment, the management agency for IVE, another K-pop group. Defamation cases about content posted on websites like YouTube, Instagram and X have stalled.

As a result, people have flocked to those platforms because they believe they can hide, Chong said.

“Most of the victims of defamation who have come to me for advice have because of YouTube,” he said in an interview, adding that the platform was a “blind spot” for the authorities seeking to uproot users who defame stars while profiting from their videos.

Chong obtained information about an anonymous YouTube account that Starship Entertainment had accused of defamation, insult and business obstruction. In one example, the YouTuber appeared to use South Koreans’ negative perceptions of China to spread a rumor that Jang Won-young, a South Korean member of IVE, was Chinese, Chong said. Using that information, Chong won a civil suit against the YouTuber in South Korea.

The YouTuber, a woman who was not named by the South Korean authorities, argued that the claims were truthful and made in the public interest, Chong said. But the woman was ordered to pay Jang, one of her main targets, damages of 100 million South Korean won, about $74,000, in a civil case. The YouTuber appealed, Chong said.

“The defamation and insulting resulted in mental distress,” he said.

In the NewJeans case, the members of the band filed a criminal complaint against the YouTuber with a police station in Seoul. But the case could not go forward because the YouTube account was anonymous, according to the filing.

Eugene Kim, the lawyer for NewJeans, wrote that he had asked Google, which operates YouTube, for information about the YouTube account. After he was unsuccessful, he filed the motion with the court in California under a federal statute that allows people to obtain documents needed in a foreign proceeding.

NewJeans' Hyein Temporarily Halts Activities Ahead Of Comeback

NewJeans ’ Hyein will be temporarily halting all activities due to an injury.

On April 10, ADOR announced that Hyein would be taking a temporary break from activities due to a microfracture in her foot that she sustained during practice.

Meanwhile, NewJeans currently has about a month and a half left to go before their comeback: the group is scheduled to return with a double single on May 24.

ADOR’s full English announcement regarding Hyein’s injury is as follows:

Hello. This is ADOR. We regret to bring you unfortunate news regarding NewJeans member Hyein. She will be taking a break from her activities due to an injury sustained during practice. Pain in the top of her foot during practice prompted her to [go to] the hospital, where she underwent a thorough examination and discovered a microfracture in her foot. The medical staff advised her to limit her movement as much as possible until she recovered. Accordingly, Hyein will pause her activities and focus on recovery and recuperation. We will do our very best to support Hyein so she can resume her activities in good health. Thank you.

NewJeans are asking a federal court to make Google reveal the identity of a user who’s allegedly been posting “false and defamatory videos” about the K-pop stars on YouTube . 

The ex parte application was filed at the end of March after NewJeans made a criminal complaint in South Korea, but authorities were unable to move forward with the case because they could not identify the anonymous user. NewJeans’ lawyer tried an informal request to get the information from Google, but that was unsuccessful, leading to the court filing. 

According to court docs obtained by Rolling Stone , the YouTuber posts under the handle @Middle7 and has made “as many as 33 defamatory videos” about the members of NewJeans. The @Middle7 account has approximately 12,700 subscribers, according to the application, and as of this March their videos had been viewed more than 13.8 million times.

To that point, this kind of case is not necessarily new for NewJeans or Ador. Even a cursory scroll through the official Ador Twitter account reveals several statements from the past couple of years regarding similar legal proceedings and privacy protections for members. 

Unsurprisingly, it’s somewhat easier for K-pop groups and their teams to clamp down on online vitriol — and take legal action — if users are using platforms in South Korea. As a result, trolls have flocked to international platforms, like YouTube, in the hopes it might offer more protection. But that’s not always the case, as The Times notes: Last year, a lawyer for the K-pop group IVE went through the U.S. courts to obtain the name of a YouTuber accused of making false statements about one of the band’s members; that subsequently led to a successful civil suit in South Korea.
