PhD Job Fair

A two-day event where recruiters from business schools and job-seeking researchers meet

phd job fair 2023

PHD JOB FAIR

Before the event The option for the recruiters to schedule on-site interviews with the candidates

To bring PhD candidates and recruiters from international business schools and universities together

For PhD candidates to present their job market paper and get interviewed

ABOUT THE JOB FAIR

Co-founded in 2016 by EFMD and the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management, the Job Fair for PhDs in Business and Management is a two-day event that brings together job-seeking PhD candidates in all areas of management with faculty and recruiters from international business schools and universities.

During the first three editions, more than 100 schools from all over the world sent their representatives – recruiters and candidates – to take advantage of this opportunity. Among them, China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Monash Business School, Audencia Business School and IE Business School.

TARGET GROUPS

Recruiters Recruiters from international business schools and universities looking for entry-level faculty to complete their academic teams.

Candidates Final year PhD students or PhD graduates in all areas of business and management* seeking an academic career.

* Accounting, Finance, Information Management, Management (Organisation), Managerial Economics, Marketing, Operations Management, and their sub-areas.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • In the morning, the candidates present their job market paper to recruiters in a 15-minute research presentation, followed by a 5-minute long Q&A session.
  • In the afternoon, the recruiters schedule on-site interviews with the candidates they are interested in.

EFMD_Global-PHD_Job_Fair-Jonathan_Winterton

“The quality of the candidates, many from beyond Europe and almost exclusively with or about to obtain doctorates from some of Europe’s top business schools, justified such a long trip from Malaysia. Whilst my task of recruiting 21 new research-active academics before the end of June was a nice problem to have, it was a problem nonetheless and to find so many potential entry-level candidates in one place was an opportunity not to be missed. ”

Jonathan Winterton

EFMD_Global-PHD_Job_Fair-Bilal_Ahmed_Jathol

“My experience at the Job Fair was amazing. I appeared at several interviews, interacted with many representatives of business schools and made connections with PhD Candidates from other business schools. I am glad to inform you that one of my interviews at EFMD Job Fair became the foundation of a job offer from NEOMA Business School, which I have accepted. So for me, the Job Fair was a success. Thank you for arranging and coordinating such a wonderful event.”

International PhD Career Readiness Series (Nov. 2023)

The International PhD Career Readiness Series is intentionally designed to focus on providing strategies of career preparation for international PhD candidates and Postdocs in the United States, including best practices on navigating PhD career landscape and U.S. workplace culture, job search process, and how to prepare for the immigration portfolio.

With 3 interactive sessions, we hope to tackle topics commonly faced by PhD candidates and Postdocs with an international background. Led by Dr. Priya Date and Dr. Yi Hao who work with many graduate students and Postdocs and share the lived experiences of international PhDs and immigrants, this series is best suited for PhD students in their candidacy (or ABD status), and Postdoctoral Scholars.

Topics, Schedule, Format, and Location

First Three Thursdays, 3:30-5 PM (ET), in November 2023, virtual | Registration

  • Navigating the Career Landscape and Workplace Culture in the U.S.: November 2
  • Job Search Strategies for International PhD Candidates: November 9
  • Using Professional Development to Strengthen Immigration Portfolios:  November 16

* This series is to address the overarching challenges facing international PhDs and to enhance individuals' career readiness post-PhD/postdoc training. Most content will be applicable to those interested in academic AND industry careers in the U.S. For Session 2, however, we will focus more on job search strategies in careers beyond academia, given the series is scheduled in November and the typical academic job search cycle. Please see the session description below for more details.

Co-Instructors

Dr. Priya Date , University of Virginia, School of Engineering

Dr. Yi Hao , University of Maryland, College Park, the Graduate School

Session Descriptions

As we acknowledge the changing landscape for PhDs, what do you know about career outcomes for international PhDs? Specifically, what unique strengths and transferable skills do you have as international candidates that will help you stand out during the job search process? We will also uncover the U.S. workplace culture, what are some unsaid shared values and belief systems in the U.S. workspace? What are some assumptions and cultural nuances that you should be aware of as you begin your job search and tips to improve your intercultural fluency.

In this session, we will discuss specific job search strategies best suited for international PhDs. You will gain tacit knowledge on the application process in the U.S. through standard job search timeline, employer perspectives, and strategies to save time during job search. You will also understand best practices in resumes and cover letter writing, as well as how to utilize LinkedIn to collect information and build relationships with working professionals.

*Note: Since this series is scheduled in November, we will focus on professional careers beyond academia. For participants at UVA, please refer to PhD Plus’s Future Faculty module in late summer/early fall. For participants at UMD, please refer to the Graduate School’s Academic Job Document Retreat every summer and fall.

Your career success as an international PhD student or Postdoc in the United States depends not only on your skills, credentials, and experience but also on your ability to obtain a work visa or permanent residency as fast as possible. To secure the proper immigration status, you need to assemble an immigration portfolio, similar to a job application package. An immigration portfolio helps you stand out and includes evidence of your credentials, work experience, international recognition, and the importance of your work. Unlike job packages, immigration portfolios are more robust and less understood. Preparing an immigration portfolio is like building a network--it takes time, effort, and knowledge. Come learn how to use your professional development activities to create an immigration portfolio by prioritizing activities that satisfy the immigration criteria for substantial merit or the National Interest Waiver while increasing competitiveness for diverse careers.

Building community through the gsas career fellows program.

Louis Brandeis Statue on Brandeis campus, with steps leading up to it

April 29, 2024

Abigail Arnold | Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

While graduate school is a notoriously busy place, it’s always a good choice to make time to think about career planning and the future. The Brandeis University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Professional Development team supports students through this often tricky process through a variety of programming and services, including the Career Fellows Program . Now in its third year, the program brings together students across departments who are committed to career exploration, building a cohort who connect with each other while attending a range of professional development workshops, informational talks, and networking sessions. This year, thirty students, who were selected from sixty-seven total applicants, participated in the program. Fifteen students came from the sciences, and fifteen came from the humanities, social sciences, and creative arts. Session topics included approaching career exploration, the job search for international students, faculty careers, AI careers, optimizing LinkedIn, resumes and CVs, informational interviewing, and interviewing. Marika McCann, Associate Director of Professional Development and Employer Outreach for GSAS, explained the process of developing this year’s programming and building on previous work. “Last year we sent out a survey to fellows to get feedback and see what areas we should focus on this year. We wanted to prioritize AI, as we had many questions about careers in these areas, and held a session that talked about interdisciplinary AI careers,” she said. “We also listened to feedback and added more sessions specifically for international students about the job search.” Along with GSAS Faculty Director of Professional Development Jonathan Anjaria, McCann also worked to make sure that the programming was helpful to students no matter what program they were in. “For our informational interviewing session we provided a variety of alumni contacts to our students in different careers that span across disciplines,” she said. “We have focused on bringing in professionals in industry, academia and nonprofits to help build connections.” In putting together the career fellows programming, McCann and Anjaria worked to bring students together, as well as to get them started on a journey of career exploration. “We prioritized having a few in-person casual lunches with students to get to know each other,” said McCann. She also explained why she thinks the program is so important: “The skills we are teaching in our fellows program are essential for graduate students in their job search, and, unfortunately, many aren't gaining these skills early enough in their graduate career. By learning the building blocks of career exploration and the job search earlier on, they are getting more time to practice these skills and connect with those outside of their programs and are better prepared for when they graduate and are ready for the next step in their career.” Students at all stages of their graduate careers had words of praise for the career fellows programming and what they learned from it. Derrick Kim, a first-year PhD student in Computer Science, said, “I think it's important to talk to people in other disciplines, especially if we have more opportunities to talk about our research interests and what we are doing. I think it would be nice to distill our research into a form where someone who has no idea about the field can understand. As a PhD student, I think we are tempted to overspecialize, but when we go out in the real world, we struggle to simplify our research so that people from other disciplines can easily understand.” He appreciated the chance to network with fellow students and alums across programs, saying, “I think it's better to build a stronger alumni network – as Marika said, 70% of jobs are gotten through connections. I think this is a safe arena to develop good social skills and talk to people from different disciplines.” Kwame Gayle, a first-year PhD student in Sociology, agreed about the importance of community building. He said, “I liked the networking lunches throughout the semester, where I could get to meet other graduate students on campus…Through the fellowship, I have built connections with other graduate students and alumni across different fields.” Gayle highlighted the importance of using these interpersonal connections to advance one’s career and personal journeys, saying, “Community is vital as you navigate graduate school. The more spaces you're able to build community, the better! Career development programming creates a space for like minded individuals (students and alumni) to connect and have future engagement. It is also a window into the possibilities which helps to keep current students grounded and hopeful. Lastly, it challenges the narrative that life stops in grad school; rather, you can continue to build connections as your career progresses throughout graduate school as well.” Jiahua Chen, a fourth-year PhD student in Biochemistry and Biophysics, was excited about the ways in which the program helped her answer her questions about finding and preparing for a career after graduation. “The Career Fellows program seemed like the perfect place to find the answers to my three ‘how’ questions that had been wandering in my heart for some time: How to find my first matching job? How to translate my current skills into tangible advantages in the workplace? How to align my skill set with the demands of a prospective position?” she said. She also liked how the program walked her through the career exploration process, saying, “As a fellow, I have acquired multiple skills in a step-by-step and build-up manner, from pinpointing my career goals/positions to structuring resumes, navigating job searching social media platforms, and conducting interviews.” Lianne Gallant, a first-year PhD student in History, liked how the program allowed her to begin her career planning process early in her graduate student career. “As the academic job market becomes increasingly difficult, an increasing number of graduate students are planning for industry positions after graduation and I believe institutions have an obligation to prepare us for that, something GSAS and the Career Center at Brandeis have done really well,” she said. “I try to think of graduate school as an entry-level job and a key part of that is to develop a sense of our professional selves as early as possible.” Gallant particularly appreciated the session on teaching at community colleges and their focus on teaching over research; she said, “So much of the academic job market often focuses on research experience and publications and it's nice to know that there are other options.” Both Kim and Chen especially liked the LinkedIn session, for which McCann and Anjaria brought in Omar Garriott and Jeremy Schifeling, previous leaders of the LinkedIn Education team. “It was highly beneficial to hear about LinkedIn insights and tips from the previous leader of the LinkedIn education team, Jeremy Schifeling, who worked at LinkedIn and knew the LinkedIn story ‘behind the scenes,’” said Chen. “I got to hear important things that recruiters wanted to see on a resume,” added Kim. Through the career fellows program, the GSAS Professional Development team gives students the opportunity to learn from staff, from alums, from outside experts, and from their peers. By taking a process that can feel scary and providing guidance and steps for how to approach it, the program sets GSAS students up for success.

Looking back: Mage won 2023 Kentucky Derby on day marred by death of two horses

phd job fair 2023

Before the 2023 Kentucky Derby, horse racing was in the spotlight because of seven horse deaths during the week of the race. Bob Baffert, the Hall of Fame trainer of two Triple Crown winners, was also continuing his suspension from Churchill Downs after 2021 Derby winner  Medina Spirit was disqualified for failing a post-race drug test.

When the 18 horses lined up for the 149th running of the 1 ¼ mile race, it was the smallest field since 2020, when 15 horses entered, and the Derby was run in September because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tapit Trice had the best morning line odds at 5-1 after early favorite Forte, who had won the Florida Derby, was scratched earlier in the morning because of a bruised foot. Just before the race, Angel of Empire came in as a 4-1 favorite.

Eventual winner Mage , who didn’t even race as a two-year-old and had one victory in three career starts, had 15-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby.

How Mage won 2023 Kentucky Derby

Jace’s Road, Reincarnate, and Kingsbarns broke out early from the pack, crossing the ¼ mile at 22:35. Coming down at the ½ mile mark, Verifying set the pace at 45.73, but at the top of the stretch, Two Phil’s bolted out to the lead, but the Mage came from the outside with long strides passing Two Phil’s on inside and won by a length, crossing the finish at 2:01.57.

Mage paid out $32.42 (win), $14.58 (place), and $9.08 (show) and won $1.86 million for coming in first. Mage’s jockey Javier Castellano also broke a 0-15 skid at Churchill Downs.

The day was marred by the death of two horses . Freezing Point and Chloe’s Dream were euthanized after racing earlier in the day.
