  • Reduce Reduce means to cut down on the amount of waste being thrown out
  • Reuse Reuse means to use things over and over again and find new uses for objects e.g. use a water bottle over and over for school!
  • Recycle Recycle means to re-use the item and create something else with it.
  • The average person throws away 726 kilograms of waste each year!
  • The average family throw away the amount equal to half a fully grown elephant each year. Doesnt sound that bad? Thats equal to 1 . 5 TONS of rubbish each year
  • There are 2 types of waste, biodegradable and non-biodegradable.
  • Biodegradable means its able to rot naturally and non-biodegradable cant rot naturally.
  • Examples of biodegradable waste include garden and kitchen waste like potato skins and banana skins. Newspaper is also biodegradable!
  • Buy things loose. When youre buying vegetables or fruit buy them without the packaging, as this produces less waste.
  • Make a compost pile and have a brown bin at home
  • For more info on how to stop waste visit Kids' Stuff About Waste Reduction and Recycling ?
  • 1 of plastic bags are recycled.
  • A few years ago a study showed that 8 million pounds of plastic bags are thrown away each year.
  • If you dont recycle them, animals can eat them and get stuck in their throat and they will suffocate.
  • Last year 4 billion steel cans were recycled in the UK. Don't forget that all steel is 100 recyclable and can be recycled many times without losing any quality.
  • 1 ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees!
  • Reuse paper around the home as scrap paper or packing material. Envelopes can also be reused.
  • Another good way to reduce paper is to read the news online this will stop the massive amount of trees being cut down for newspapers alone!
  • In our school we do lots of things to reduce, reuse and recycle.
  • We recycle old glass lenses, stamps and mobile phones, on top of every thing else like paper, cardboard and plastic bottles.
  • We have a compost bin, a breathing area, a green house and every class has its own blue bin.
  • We have a garden for birds, rodents, insects and more!
  • We even have a newly refurbished our P6 vegetable garden!!!
  • Our school runs 3 bus services, cutting down on the amount of CO2 we create!
  • We also use our textbooks over and over and over again, helping to save trees!
  • We have an eco-schools club run by Ann Hegarty and we have 2 green flags!
  • Cardboard e.g easter egg boxes
  • Christmas, birthday and special occasions cards.
  • Milk cartons
  • Plastic bottles
  • Glass bottles
  • Organic waste
  • Animal waste

Stay up to date:, circular economy.

This article was originally published on 14 February 2024 and updated on 15 April 2024.

  • E-waste, or waste electrical and electronic equipment, is the fastest-growing waste stream globally, with an estimated 62 billion kilogrammes produced in 2022 alone.
  • But the phones, tablets, laptops and other gadgets we discard contain valuable metals and minerals, collectively worth $62.5 billion each year.
  • With currently only about one-fifth of the world's e-waste recycled, a World Economic Forum report underscores the need for systemic change to encourage industries to embrace the circular economy.

Technological advancements continue to transform our world, but the result is a cascade of unwanted devices that are becoming the fastest-growing waste stream on the planet.

Global e-waste almost doubled in the past 12 years reaching 62 billion kilogrammes (kg) in 2022, and is projected to increase to 82 billion kg by 2030.

The growth of global e-waste

The total of 62 billion kg of e-waste generated in 2022 is enough to fill 1.55 million 25-metre-long trucks forming a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam stretching 40,000 kilometres around Earth's equator, according to The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 report produced by the United Nations.

However, just over 22% of all that waste was formally collected and recycled, the report notes.

Our discarded phones, tablets, laptops and other gadgets are worth $62.5 billion each year and, per tonne, contain 100 times more gold than the same weight of gold ore. And, yet, only about one-fifth of the world’s e-waste is recycled.

But here are seven initiatives aimed at boosting e-waste recycling rates to reuse the valuable metals and minerals contained in our old devices.

Global e-waste generated by year.

1. Colourful collections

Cambridge City Council in the UK now provides bright pink bins to collect residents’ discarded small electrical goods and reduce the quantity of e-waste that ends up in regular recycling collections.

These appliances cannot be included in curbside recycling bins, but they contain much-needed materials like copper and lithium.

Around 49 tonnes of small electrical appliances have been deposited into the eye-catching collection bins since they were installed in 2022, ready for reuse or recycling.

2. Egypt’s e-waste app

Policymakers in Egypt have launched the E-Tadweer mobile application, which uses technology to tackle the country’s growing e-waste challenge .

The app enables end-users to take their unwanted appliances to dedicated delivery points and exchange them for vouchers, which can be used to purchase new electronic goods from stores that have joined the scheme.

Safe recycling of electronic devices helps prevent harmful chemicals contained within, such as mercury or lead, from finding their way into soil and waterways.

The World Economic Forum Centre for Nature and Climate is actively promoting the transition to a circular economy through various initiatives. The objective is to create a more sustainable and resilient economic system by reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.

  • The Circular Transformation of Industries initiative engages leaders from industry, government, academia, and civil society to drive circularity across sectors and economies. It consolidates information from previous efforts, shares best practices and creates new partnerships. Learn more about Unlocking New Value in a Resource-Constrained World .
  • The Circular Cars Initiative aims to create a climate-friendly automobility system by minimizing lifecycle emissions, particularly in manufacturing. Its goal is the development of a convenient, affordable, 1.5°C-aligned system by 2030. Discover the benefits of circular economy in the car industry here .
  • The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) brings together global stakeholders to promote the transition to a circular plastics economy. GPAP provides a platform for global learning and local action in nine countries coordinating efforts and maximizing impact. Learn more in our Impact Report .

3. Precious metals from the Royal Mint

The Royal Mint, noted for producing coinage for the UK and more than 30 other nations, is developing a new process to reclaim gold and other precious metal deposits from discarded electronic devices.

Together with Canadian start-up Excir, researchers have invented a patented process that they claim can extract 99% of the gold held on a printed circuit board found inside laptops, cell phones and other devices.

Royal Mint engineers are working to scale this quick, sustainable chemical process that operates at room temperature. The recovered gold will be melted into ingots ready for use in Royal Mint products.

4. Singapore’s policy and community fixes

The island state of Singapore generates an estimated 60,000 tonnes of e-waste each year, and with land in limited supply, the problem of what to do with it is high on the agenda.

At the state level, Singapore’s policymakers have put in place progressive legislation making it the producer's responsibility to collect end-of-life electrical appliances and electronic devices , and send them for reuse or recycling.

At community level, the Repair Kopitiam – which means “coffee shop” in Malay – initiative relies on a network of local volunteers who work out of community centres to help local people repair old or broken appliances and electronics so they can be reused rather than discarded.

Have you read?

What is urban mining – and why do we need to do more of it, why understanding mineral associations is key to managing the critical minerals supply gap, what's the best way to handle e-waste, including old phone chargers, 5. repair and reuse cafes.

Repair cafes or centres like those in Singapore, where in-the-know volunteer repairers help people extend the useful life of their appliances and devices , have been around for many years in parts of Europe and elsewhere.

The growing influence of the circular economy is highlighted in a 2018 European Union survey, which found that almost two-thirds of Europeans would rather repair products than buy new ones .

And countries like France are supporting this drive to avoid e-waste, with the country’s National Assembly voting to create a repairability index of electrical and electronic equipment , to boost the repair rate by 60% within five years of the legislation.

6. Northern Africa's e-waste legislation

Some countries in Northern Africa are turning to legislation to resolve their e-waste challenges, according to the UN's latest e-waste report.

Egypt has established a new regulatory agency for its waste management industry , and has further enforced a ban on imports of hazardous substances and wastes, including e-waste resulting from electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).

Tunisia has also moved to regulate e-waste, drafting a decree to establish a polluter-pays system for importing EEE.

E-waste collection and recycling centres are in operation at varying levels in both countries.

7. Taiwan's better-by-design approach

The Taiwanese government has established a legal framework to regulate and manage effective disposal and recycling of e-waste.

Under the legislation, manufacturers and importers of electronic goods are required to design products with recycling in mind, as well as establish collection systems and finance recycling and disposal of e-waste, making them responsible for the entire lifecycle of the products they produce.

The World Economic Forum’s Circular Transformation of Industries: Unlocking New Value in a Resource-Constrained World report, points to the systemic change required to bring about a circular transformation of industries to help unlock productivity, innovation and sustainability gains.

Higher global consumption of e-goods, shorter product life cycles and fewer repair options mean the amount of unwanted phones, laptops and other items is soaring. However, changing attitudes to the circular economy mean initiatives aimed at reusing and recycling e-waste could help us use precious metals and minerals more sustainably.

Go green! Reduce, reuse and recycle your tech

By Louise Flinn

For Earth Day, a laptop computer showing a reduce, reuse, recycle symbol floats on stylized green leaves

This Earth Day, think about how you can reduce, reuse and recycle your tech. The tech we use impacts the environment throughout its entire lifecycle, but you can do a few things to make your environmental footprint a little smaller.

First, reduce how much tech you buy by keeping your devices longer. Keeping devices longer not only saves you money, it helps save the planet. Fewer devices manufactured means fewer resources, like energy and materials, used to make and ship those new devices.

Wearing a mask and gloves, an employee uses a power screwdriver on a laptop

ITS offers on-campus tech support to help keep student laptops running longer. The ITS Service Desk can assist with virus and spyware removal, reimage laptops and diagnose other issues. And, did you know ITS has an on-campus authorized repair center for Apple, Dell and Lenovo computers?

The ITS Computer Repair Center (CRC) can replace batteries, screens, broken keyboards and more — all without you having to leave campus.

The CRC primarily works on under-warranty computers purchased through the Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) program, but the CRC can also repair non-CCI machines. To get started on a repair, stop by the ITS Service Desk in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union.

And if employees want to access on-campus repairs from the CRC for their personal laptops, they can purchase CCI machines through the UNC Tech Shop at Student Stores and enjoy the same benefits.

Optimize battery life

A top reason people replace their devices? Declining battery life. Keeping your battery healthy may help you keep the device a little longer. Most come with settings to optimize your battery life by limiting fast charging, letting your battery deplete or shortening the time your battery spends fully charged.

When it’s time to replace your device, the most sustainable choice is to find a new life for your old one. Just because the device isn’t serving you anymore doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else, so first try selling, donating or trading in your old personal technology.

There are tons of resale opportunities for personal devices and many nonprofits accept working electronics . One easy way to donate is to drop off your old working devices an Orange County Solid Waste salvage shed .

If the unwanted equipment is University-owned, UNC-Chapel Hill policy states that its disposal must be managed by  University Surplus . This policy applies to both working and non-working computers, peripherals and cell phones. You can work with your local IT support to surplus unwanted technology.

Reuse means both giving your old device a new life and considering a previously-used device when you’re shopping. Not only are used or refurbished devices available on various marketplaces, you can also visit the University Surplus retail store to find some new-to-you tech.

If your device can’t be reused, recycle it! Our gadgets pose an environmental risk if we don’t properly dispose of them. So, don’t trash that old tech.

In fact, North Carolina bans electronic waste, or e-waste, from landfills. Recycling does more than just keep heavy metals and corrosives out of our soil and water. It also puts sought-after materials, like gold and platinum, back into the manufacturing stream. And e-waste is more than computers and smartphones. You should also recycle things like batteries, old headphones, charging cables and gaming consoles.

UNC Facilities and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling support a few ways to recycle your old tech on campus.

First, students can recycle e-waste in the Student Union and in the area offices of on-campus housing communities. Bins have a dedicated compartment for batteries and another for general e-waste, like smartphones and cables.

For employees, remember to send all University-owned non-working equipment to University Surplus. Surplus will then either handle the e-waste recycling or repair the equipment for use in North Carolina schools. The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling accepts personal cell phones sent via campus mail to CB #1805.

A tall cabinet has three vertical compartments, one labeled e-waste, another for plastic film and a third for batteries

And if on-campus recycling isn’t convenient, Orange County offers battery and e-waste recycling at many of its waste and recycling centers .

Stay secure

And whether you’re donating, selling or recycling, it’s essential you take a few steps to protect your data. For your personal devices, you can find a factory reset or erase data option in your settings.

For University-owned devices and media, disposal must adhere to the Surplus Computers or Electronic Media Storage Devices Policy to make sure University data doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

City of Columbus highlights importance of recycling, local resources

by Sarah Converse

A recycling bin in Bexley, Ohio. (WSYX)

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The City of Columbus wants to remind you of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle as we celebrate Earth Month.

Sustainability Manager for the City of Columbus Department of Public Service , Aryeh Alex, says it is a simple habit to start.

The easiest way to start recycling is to start with one item. And I think, the easiest thing is cardboard, everyone has cardboard. Everyone knows what cardboard is. They can put it in their blue bin at home. They can bring it here or they can bring it to one of the free public recycling drop-off sites that are all over Franklin County," says Alex. "Once you get into the habit of recycling cardboard, you can look at aluminum and glass to infinitely recyclable materials and then from there then your recycling pro.”

The City of Columbus has a convenience center drop-off location where you can drop off traditional recycling, yard waste, food waste and some electronics. Electronics that are acceptable are laptops, tablets and phones. The center also collects clothes, furniture, bicycles and appliances.

Materials that are not accepted include hazardous or flammable materials, very dirty clothes and televisions.

It is important to divert as much recyclable and reusable material from the landfill. Aryeh says the convenience center has kept about 750 lbs. of electronic material every week out of the landfill, and over 30,000 lbs. of food scraps have been collected to use as compost.

Aryeh says food scraps release the most methane gas as it breaks down quickly. Franklin County throws away millions of pounds of food a day, so it is important to collect food waste so that it can be made into compost.

That compost will be used in gardens and farms, where more food will be made.

Other recyclable items, like cardboard, can mean fewer trees being cut down, and aluminum and glass could mean less mining.

By reducing, reusing and recycling, we can make Ohio cleaner and more beautiful.

52% of all litter actually ends up in our waterways. You can see a piece of litter on the street--there's another piece of litter just like it floating in one of our creeks, streams and rivers here," says Alex. "And if we properly dispose of that water, whether it be recycling, trash or yard waste, we can prevent that from happening."

If you are not sure what is recyclable and where you can drop off that material, you can download the Pickup CBUS app on Apple or Android devices .
