What people say about Flixier

Steve Mastroianni - RockstarMind.com

I’ve been looking for a solution like Flixier for years. Now that my virtual team and I can edit projects together on the cloud with Flixier, it tripled my company’s video output! Super easy to use and unbelievably quick exports.

Evgeni Kogan

My main criteria for an editor was that the interface is familiar and most importantly that the renders were in the cloud and super fast. Flixier more than delivered in both. I've now been using it daily to edit Facebook videos for my 1M follower page.

Anja Winter, Owner, LearnGermanWithAnja

I'm so relieved I found Flixier. I have a YouTube channel with over 700k subscribers and Flixier allows me to collaborate seamlessly with my team, they can work from any device at any time plus, renders are cloud powered and super super fast on any computer.

Frequently asked questions.

GIFs are technically limited to 8 bits per pixel and only 256 indexed colors. In practice, this is a lot more than it sounds like, but there will still be a noticeable quality in colors and sharpness between most GIFs and something like an MP4 video.

GIFs tend to be lower quality than videos because they’re less efficient. Despite not featuring any audio, GIF files are still much larger than MP4 videos, which means that most people have to lower the resolution and frame rate of their GIF in order to keep it down to a reasonable size and ensure that it can load fast in a web browser, or to make it shareable over email and instant messaging.

You can save a PowerPoint animation as a GIF by recording your presentation with Flixier and then cropping out the animation and saving it to your computer as a GIF using our online editor.

What they say about VEED

Veed is a great piece of browser software with the best team I've ever seen. Veed allows for subtitling, editing, effect/text encoding, and many more advanced features that other editors just can't compete with. The free version is wonderful, but the Pro version is beyond perfect. Keep in mind that this a browser editor we're talking about and the level of quality that Veed allows is stunning and a complete game changer at worst.

I love using VEED as the speech to subtitles transcription is the most accurate I've seen on the market. It has enabled me to edit my videos in just a few minutes and bring my video content to the next level

Laura Haleydt - Brand Marketing Manager, Carlsberg Importers

The Best & Most Easy to Use Simple Video Editing Software! I had tried tons of other online editors on the market and been disappointed. With VEED I haven't experienced any issues with the videos I create on there. It has everything I need in one place such as the progress bar for my 1-minute clips, auto transcriptions for all my video content, and custom fonts for consistency in my visual branding.

How-To Geek

How to create an animated gif of a powerpoint presentation.

Share an animated GIF of your PowerPoint presentation on social media, your intranet, or your blog.

Quick Links

Table of contents.

Want a great way to share your Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow on social media, your company intranet, or a blog? You can create an animated GIF of your PowerPoint presentation and share it with the world.

If you have PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 on Windows or Mac, creating an animated GIF is a piece of cake. Since the steps differ slightly, we'll list them separately so that you can jump right to the platform you need.

Create an Animated GIF in PowerPoint on Windows

Create an animated gif in powerpoint on mac, notes on your animated gif.

Open your PowerPoint slideshow on your Windows computer and click File > Export.

Under Export, choose "Create an Animated GIF."

To the right, select the quality in the drop-down list at the top. It's set to medium by default, but you can choose small, large, or extra large if you like.

Optionally, you can check the box for "Make Background Transparent."

By default, the Seconds to Spend on Each Slide is set to one second. This refers to a minimum number of seconds per slide. If you have animations that are longer than the minimum, they will be included. Transitions between slides do not count toward this minimum. You can use the arrows to increase the number of seconds or enter a number in the box.

You can include all slides in your presentation, or a certain range of Slides, using the arrows or the number boxes.

With everything set, click "Create GIF." You should now be able to see your new presentation GIF in the location you chose.

Open your presentation in PowerPoint for Mac and click File > Export from the menu bar.

In the Export window, choose a location in which to save the file. You can rename it if you like, and optionally, add tags. If you want to save it online, click "Online Locations" and pick your Place.

In the File Format drop-down list, select "Animated GIF."

The Image Quality is set to medium by default, but you can pick small, large, or extra large if you prefer. If you want a transparent background, check that box next to Background.

Another default setting is the Seconds Spent on Each Slide, which is one second. Like on Windows, this refers to a minimum duration spent on each slide, in which animations are included, and transitions don't count toward the minimum. You can adjust this by using the arrows or by entering a number of seconds in that box.

You can use all slides in your presentation, or a specific range of Slides, using the arrows or the number boxes.

When you're ready, click "Export." Then, head to the location where you saved the file and grab your GIF.

Here are just a few things to keep in mind for your animated GIF.

  • The finished GIF will continuously loop. This is not currently an adjustable setting.
  • Hidden slides will not be included in the GIF. Be sure to unhide those slides  first if you want them in the GIF.
  • Media like videos or other GIFs, animations, and transitions will be included in the GIF.

Hopefully, this handy Microsoft PowerPoint tip helps you share your presentation quickly and easily wherever you like. You can also save a slide as an image  if you'd like to give that a try!

Add an animated GIF to a slide

A .gif file can be either a still image or an animated image. If you have animated GIF, this article describes how to insert it on a slide.

If you have a GIF that is a still image, it can't be turned into an animated GIF.

You can add an animated GIF (or meme ) to a PowerPoint slide as you would with any other picture file.

You can insert a GIF file that is stored on your computer hard disk or in OneDrive.

Insert image location in the ribbon.

Select the slide that you want to add the animated GIF to.

In the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Pictures .

In the Insert Picture From  dialog box, navigate to the location of the animated GIF you want to add.

Select the file, and then click Insert .

Start a Slide Show from the current slide.

Find animated GIFs on the web

You can also search the web for GIFs by using Insert Online Pictures or Insert Clip Art , depending on your version of PowerPoint. On the Insert tab of the ribbon, choose Insert Online Pictures or Insert Clip Art . Type "animated gif" in the search box.

Determine how many times the animation loops

Animated GIFs often loop repeatedly without end. But you can change that by editing the GIF before you add it to your PowerPoint slide.

Once you have the GIF file saved to your computer, a relatively easy way to edit the GIF is with the online editor called ezgif.com.

Go to the GIF frame extractor (or "Splitter") on ezgif.com .

Upload your GIF to the EZGIF.com web site

Under Upload image from your computer , click the Browse button to locate the GIF file on your computer. Select the file and then select the Open button.

Click Upload!

The animated GIF appears on the web page, followed by facts about the file size and dimensions, similar to this picture:

The uploaded GIF and the Split to Frames button

Click the Split to frames button below the animated GIF.

After a moment, a frame-by-frame breakdown is shown on the web page.

Below the many frames (scroll downward on the page as needed), there's a blue Edit animation button.

Click Edit animation .

Click the Edit Animation button

The set of frames appears again, with a Skip , Copy , and Delay option for each frame. Below the frames are more options, including one for Loop Count .

Under GIF options , in the Loop Count box, type a numeral representing the number of times you want the GIF to play.

In the Loop Count box, type a numeral representing how many times the GIF should play

Click Make a GIF!

After a few moments, the revised GIF is shown below the Make a GIF! button. Below the revised GIF is a row of buttons, and the far right one is named save .

Select the Save button to copy the revised GIF back to your computer

Click save to copy the revised GIF back to your computer.

Depending on your browser, the file will be saved to your Downloads folder or you'll be allowed to specify where you want the GIF file to be copied to on your computer.

You can specify where you want to GIF file to be copied to on your computer

With the revised GIF on your computer, you're ready to insert it on a slide in PowerPoint.

Make an animated GIF from a slide show

Animate text or objects

You can add an animated GIF to a PowerPoint slide as you would with any other picture file. You can insert a GIF file that is stored on your computer hard disk or in cloud storage (such as OneDrive).

On Home tab of the ribbon, under Insert , click Picture > Picture from File .

powerpoint presentation to gif

Navigate to the location of the animated GIF you want to add, make sure the file name ends with a .gif extension, select the file, and then click Insert .

To play the animation, select the Slide Show  menu and then select Play from Current Slide .

You can add an animated GIF to a slide by using PowerPoint for the web, just as you would with any other picture file, but the GIF won't play when the presentation is viewed in Slide Show. PowerPoint for the web can't play animated GIFs.

If playing GIFs is a feature you'd like to see in PowerPoint for the web, we encourage you to suggest features by clicking Help > Feedback > I have a suggestion .

Insert a picture from your computer on a slide

Select the slide where you want to insert an image.

On the Insert tab, select Picture .

The Insert Picture button

Browse to the picture you want to insert, select it, and then click Open .

After the picture is on your slide, you can resize it and move it wherever you want.

My name is Aimee Leong, and I’m a PM on the Office Graphics team.

Have you ever had an idea for an animated GIF but didn’t know where to get started? With the new feature Export/Save As Animated GIF, you can now create your ideas in PowerPoint!

How it works

Making an animated GIF is easy – I’ll make two in this post! Follow along with my steps.

Open PowerPoint and insert your media. For my first GIF, I am creating a memorable email signature, so I inserted an animated sticker and some text that I liked:

Email signature created in PowerPoint

For my second GIF, I am creating a rotating gallery of images to share on my social media, so inserted a series of images on each slide:

PowerPoint with 4 slides that have an image of food

Tip: Adjust the dimensions of your slide via the Slide Size menu: go to Design Tab > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size

Choose your export options in the Create an Animated GIF menu. Go to File > Export > Create an Animated GIF .

In this menu, you can adjust the size/quality of your GIF, and set the seconds spent on each slide:

PowerPoint export options to create an Animated GIF

Tip: If don’t want to adjust the export options, it’s faster to use the Save As menu: go to File > Save As and in the Save-as-Type dropdown, select “ Animated GIF Format (*.gif) “

Click Create GIF.

An Explorer window will open – in here, navigate to where you’d like your Animated GIF exported to. Click Save and PowerPoint will begin exporting your slide(s) as an Animated GIF. Go to your selected folder to see your creation!

Here is my new animated email signature:

And here is my food gallery:

This feature respects all media supported in Slideshow (shapes, text, images, SVGs, videos, Animated GIFs, 3D Models, etc), PPT Animations and PPT Transitions.

A good way to preview your Animated GIF before export is to view your slides in Slideshow Mode.

PowerPoint Presentation

A file with PPT extension represents PowerPoint file that consists of a collection of slides for displaying as SlideShow. It specifies the Binary File Format used by Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2003. A PPT file can contain several different types of information such as text, bulleted points, images, multimedia and other embedded OLE objects. Microsoft came up with newer file format for PowerPoint, known as PPTX, from 2007 onwards that is based on Office OpenXML and is different from this binary file format.

Graphical Interchange Format File

A GIF or Graphical Interchange Format is a type of highly compressed image. Owned by Unisys, GIF uses the LZW compression algorithm that does not degrade the image quality. For each image GIF typically allow up to 8 bits per pixel and up to 256 colors are allowed across the image. In contrast to a JPEG image, which can display up to 16 million colors and fairly touches the limits of the human eye.

The PPTX format was developed by Microsoft and has been the default format for PowerPoint files since 2006. Along with similar updates for other Microsoft Office formats, it was designed to replace the older PPT format. The additional X at the end represents the open XML format that makes it easier for users to share and view Microsoft Office files in other programs. Microsoft PowerPoint is used mostly for creating and delivering presentations, which can include text, graphics, animations, embedded video content and interactive elements. It is also commonly used by organisations and students to create reports, which are usually converted into PDF before sharing or publishing. As well as opening in PowerPoint itself, PPTX files will also open in Google Slides, Apple Keynote and LibreOffice. You can also use PowerPoint to save files into the older PPT format, as well as to save PowerPoint slide shows into PPS or PPSX format.

GIF stands for Graphical Interchange Format. Although traditionally still images, GIFs can also include short bursts of soundless animation. They will open in almost all image programs and on almost all devices. GIFs are raster images made up of pixels and containing up to 256 colours. To make GIFs easier to share, the image or animation is compressed with lossless compression, creating a smaller file size without noticeably affecting image quality. GIFs are often used on websites for animated objects and navigation buttons, and on social media to share video clips and animated images. GIFs were developed in 1987. They were mostly replaced by JPG and PNG until they were integrated into messaging and social media apps and started being used for memes. Billions of animated GIFs are now sent between users or posted online every day. GIFs are big business and they’re widely used by advertisers and marketeers. Many film and TV companies produce and publish their own GIFs as part of their viral marketing strategies.

Can You Convert PowerPoint Slide Animations to GIF Files?

By: Author Shrot Katewa

Can You Convert PowerPoint Slide Animations to GIF Files?

PowerPoint is a hugely underrated design tool! It comes packed with pretty much all the basic features that are needed for a designer when using high-end design software! But, with all its abilities, can PowerPoint convert slide animations and transitions to GIF files?

You can easily convert Slide Animations to GIF files in PowerPoint. Simply, go to “File”, then click “Export”. Choose the quality of the GIF file, and the number of seconds to be spent on each slide. Finally, click “Export”.

While it is pretty straightforward to create animated GIFs using PowerPoint, there are a few things that one should keep in mind. Let’s learn more about it below.

How to Convert PowerPoint Slide Animation into GIF? (Step by Step)

Let me first share with you the detailed steps that are involved in creating a GIF file using PowerPoint. That way, you’ll find it easy to learn, and we both will be on the same level of understanding.

So, here are the steps that you need to take to convert a PowerPoint slide animation to GIF files –

Step 1 – Make Sure that Your Presentation is Complete

This is an easy step to miss out. It is important to first make sure that your presentation is complete. By doing so, you will surely avoid duplication of efforts and definitely save some time.

A quick way to check if your presentation is prepared to be converted to GIF is by putting your presentation in the slide show mode. This way, you get to check all the animations and transitions involved and whether they are functioning as planned.

If there is something amiss, now would be a good time to fix that. Once that’s done, repeat the check until you arrive at the final version of the presentation.

Step 2 – Select the Export Option

powerpoint presentation to gif

The next step in converting your presentation to a GIF file is to select the export option.

To do so, simply click on “ File ” button, and from the dropdown, select “ Export “.

Step 3 – Choose “Animated GIF” File Type

powerpoint presentation to gif

In the next step, make sure that you first select the folder location on your computer where you want to export the slides as GIF file.

Then, in the “ File Format ” option, click on the dropdown. You will notice that there is an option for “ Animated GIF “. Make sure that you select that.

Step 4 – Adjust the Quality and then Export

powerpoint presentation to gif

The last step is to tweak a few settings before clicking the export button.

Choose the quality of the GIF File that you would like. Medium quality is a good option for most purposes. Likewise, I would recommend to go with 1 seconds for each slide. But, you can change that to the way you like.

One thing to note is that if you set it to higher quality and more number of seconds for each slide, the size of your GIF files will increase. So, do keep that in mind.

Finally, once you’ve fine-tuned the settings, click “ Export “.

Timing the PowerPoint Slides when Converting to GIF Files

When you convert your PowerPoint slides with animations and transitions into GIF files, you may notice that the final output has a longer duration than 1 second per slide!

What I mean by that is if you have 8 slides in your presentation with several animations and transitions , and you choose to go with “1 sec per slide” setting (as explained in step 4 above), then the output GIF file is not just 8 seconds long, but often much longer.

This is because any timings that are set for transitions between slides are not considered in the “Seconds Spent on Each Slide” setting. Furthermore, if animations on a particular slide are longer than 1 second, that particular slide will take more than 1 second even in the GIF file.

Simply put, if your presentation has animations that are longer than “Seconds Spent on Each Slide” setting, then the full length and timing of those animations are considered in the GIF file.

Furthermore, another issue that arises is when the slides are longer than 1 seconds, the transition looks snappy in the GIF files.

An easy way to fix this could be by looping your presentation first, and then exporting the presentation as “Animated GIF” file type.

We wrote a detailed article with step by step explanation on how to loop your presentation using PowerPoint. Make sure that you check it out!

Loop your PPT to Run it Automatically | Perfect Kiosk Solution

Things to Remember when Exporting PowerPoint Slides into GIF

There are a few things that you should keep in mind when exporting all the animations and transitions on your PowerPoint slides into a GIF file. These are as follows –

1. Hidden Slides are Skipped Automatically

The GIF files that are produced from PowerPoint slides will skip through any slides that are hidden in your Presentation.

So, before you export your presentation, make sure that you have all the necessary slides visible and not hidden. Also, make sure that you only have the slides that you need to include in the GIF file as PowerPoint doesn’t allow you to select specific slides for your GIF file.

2. GIF file will Include all Animations, Transitions and Media

One thing that we need to note is that the GIF file that is produced by exporting PowerPoint is quite similar in nature to how a presentation would work in a slide show mode.

Any transitions, animations or even media including videos will be included in your GIF file. So, in case you don’t want specific videos to be included, you can use a screenshot of that video as a thumbnail before you export the presentation into GIF file format.

3. GIF files produced will be Continuous Looping Type

PowerPoint only has the capability to produce continuous looping GIF file types. So, keep that in mind when exporting your powerpoint slides as a GIF file.

Caveat to the Above Method

While the introduction of GIF files dates back to 1987, it is only recently that the GIF files gained massive popularity when Facebook and other major social media platform added support for animated GIF files.

Microsoft has also followed the trend. The ability to convert PowerPoint slides with animations and transitions is only limited to Microsoft Office 365 and later versions.

Thus, converting PowerPoint slides and animations into GIF files in the older versions of PowerPoint is a bit tricky, and not possible directly.

If you don’t have an Office 365 subscription yet, I highly recommend that you get one . It comes packed with several other advanced features that transform your presentation! Click on this link to get a 30-day FREE trial! ( Hint – Make sure you scroll all the way down to the section just above FAQs, and you’ll find a link to “Try FREE for 1 month”. Alternatively, do a Ctrl+F and search for “Try FREE for 1 month” on the page).

How to Make GIFs using PowerPoint 2010 or Older?

If you are not having the latest version of Microsoft PowerPoint, don’t worry, there are ways you can make GIF files even though PowerPoint doesn’t allow it directly!

I’ll be sharing two of the easiest methods that you could use –

Method 1 – Using Online Tools

One of the easiest methods to convert your presentation to GIF files is by online tools.

There are several online tools that convert PPT to GIF for FREE. The ones that I would recommend are ZamZar and Online-Convert . While both function quite seamlessly, I noticed that online-convert showed results faster.

The process is quite simple, but for convenience, let me lay out it for you –

Step 1 – Open the URL in your Internet Browser

Simply click on the link that I’ve provided to you above and it will automatically open in a new tab.

Step 2 – Upload Your PowerPoint Presentation

powerpoint presentation to gif

The next step is to upload your PowerPoint presentation that you need to convert to GIF file format.

You can either click on “Choose Files” or simply drag and drop from the folder in the green box directly.

Make sure you adjust the settings of the output format of the GIF file as per your desire below on the page on the same web page.

If you are not sure what settings to change, leave everything as it is.

Then, click on “Start Conversion”.

Step 3 – Download the GIF file

The website may take some time to convert the PPT file to GIF file. Be patient. If your presentation file was a bit too heavy, you may want to come back in a few minutes.

powerpoint presentation to gif

Once the file has been converted to GIF file format, you will see a screen as shown above.

Simply click on the “Download” button, and save it to the desired location on your computer.

One of the biggest drawbacks of this method is that most online tools that convert your PPT to GIF file format will not retain the animations and transitions!

So, this method works great when you want a GIF file and you don’t have any animations on your presentation.

If, however, you do have animations and transitions and you are using PowerPoint 2010 or older, you can make use of the next method.

Method 2 – Save PowerPoint Animation as Video

Another way to create GIF files version of your presentation is to save your presentation as a video.

This method does involve a few additional steps, but will definitely enable you to retain all the animations and transitions!

Here are the steps that you need to follow for this method –

Step 1 – Prepare to Export your Presentation

Click on “File” in the menu bar, then from the dropdown select “Export”.

Step 2 – Choose “MP4” File Format

powerpoint presentation to gif

In the next step, make sure that you click on the dropdown option next to “File Format”, and the select “MP4”.

Step 3 – Adjust the Quality and then Export

powerpoint presentation to gif

Now, make sure that you change the settings as required. Exporting it as “Presentation Quality” will produce the best result, but it will also produce a video with a big file size. So, make sure that you choose an option that works best for you.

Once you’ve changed the settings to adjust the quality, click on “ Export “.

At this point, you have managed to successfully extract a video version of your PowerPoint presentation. Just make sure to double-check if all the animations and transitions are working as expected.

Once we’ve done that, we shall move on to the final step.

Step 4 – Convert Video to GIF File

The last step in the process is to convert the video that we just extracted from PowerPoint to a GIF file.

To do that, we shall take the help of an awesome FREE online tool called EZGIF .

powerpoint presentation to gif

Click on the link shared above, and you’ll see an option to upload your file to convert it to GIF.

Once uploaded, you will get a few settings to control exactly how your video file gets converted to a GIF file.

If you are not sure what settings to choose, simply leave all the options as is, and then click convert.

Once your file is converted to a GIF file format, you’ll see a preview below on the same page. You’ll also see an option to download the GIF file.

Click on the Download button and save the GIF file in the desired location on your computer.

You now have successfully converted your PowerPoint presentation with animations into a GIF file!

How to Insert GIF Files into a PPT?

Now that you have learned how to convert your PowerPoint presentation with animations and transitions into a GIF file, you may want to know how exactly can you use this GIF file in another presentation.

Inserting GIF files into a PowerPoint Presentation is easy. Simply go to the “Insert” tab, then click “Pictures”. You will be prompted with a dropdown menu with a few options. Simply click “Pictures from File”. Browse to the location on your computer where the GIF file is saved, and click “Insert”.

The process is quite similar to how you would insert any other image from a local folder on your computer.

You can also copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the GIF file directly on the slide.

Final Thoughts

We may often not realize the powerful capabilities of Microsoft PowerPoint especially when it comes to creating graphic designs. PowerPoint not only has the ability to create animations and transitions, but it also has the ability to convert these animations along with your content into a GIF file format.

The method is pretty straightforward, but it can be cumbersome especially if you don’t have the Office 365 version of PowerPoint.

We also looked at some of the other methods in which you can convert a presentation into GIF file format. These methods, although involve several steps, can be very useful especially if you don’t have the latest version of PowerPoint.

I hope you found the post helpful. Make sure to check out some of the other content on our site. Our goal is to make the process of creating presentations easier for you!

How to Create an Animated GIF from PowerPoint Slides – PPT to GIF

powerpoint presentation to gif

Animated GIFs can be a great way to showcase parts of a PowerPoint presentation and share them online. With just a few clicks, you can export slides from a PowerPoint file into an animated GIF that loops continuously.

In this blog post, we’ll walk through a step-by-step guide on how to easily create an animated GIF using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Benefits of Converting PPT to GIF

Here are some of the main benefits of converting part of your PowerPoint presentation into an animated GIF:

  • Easily share sections of your presentation online – Rather than sharing your entire PPT file or presentation, you can convert key animated slides into a GIF to share on social media, websites, blogs etc.
  • Engage your audience – Animated GIFs can capture viewers’ attention and help visually explain concepts from your presentation.
  • Works across devices and platforms – GIFs work on all operating systems and browsers, allowing broad compatibility.
  • Compact file size – By converting only select slides to GIF, you minimize file size for easy online sharing compared to video files.

Step-by-Step Guide to Create an Animated GIF from PowerPoint

Follow these simple steps to turn your PowerPoint slides into an optimized animated GIF:

1. Open Your PowerPoint File and Select Slides

Open the PowerPoint presentation you want to convert in the PowerPoint app. Then select the specific slides you want to turn into a GIF.

You may want to rearrange slides into the desired order at this point if needed.

2. Add Animations and Transitions

Customize the selected slides further by adding any animations or transitions you want included in the final GIF.

For example, have bullet points fly in one-by-one. Or add interesting PowerPoint transitions between slides.

3. Access the Export Animated GIF Menu

Go to File > Export > Create Animated GIF in the PowerPoint menu bar. This opens the export settings.

[Alt text: Animated GIF export menu in PowerPoint]

4. Adjust Export Settings

In the export menu you can tweak output settings:

  • Size/quality – Higher quality leads to larger GIF size. Choose based on your needs.
  • Duration – Increase the minimum seconds per slide if you want each frame shown longer.
  • Apply to – Pick selected slides or all slides to export.

5. Export the Animated GIF

When ready, click Create GIF and save the exported animated GIF file wherever desired on your computer.

That’s it! You now have an animated GIF version of your selected PowerPoint slides.

GIF Creation Tips

Follow these tips when exporting your PPT slides to animated GIFs:

  • Test different duration settings – Faster GIFs hold attention better but show less per slide. Find the right speed based on content.
  • Keep GIF length short – Stick to 6 seconds or less. Trim down to highlight the key frames only.
  • Optimize size/quality – Higher resolution GIFs have much bigger file sizes. Find the sweet spot that looks good but loads/shares fast.
  • Use subtle branding – Brand with watermarks, logos etc. but don’t obstruct the content itself.

Share Your PowerPoint GIFs

Once created, you can easily share your new animated GIFs from PowerPoint online. Post them natively on social platforms like Facebook, Twitter etc.

Or embed them into blog posts, websites, email newsletters and more. Now your audiences can enjoy those impactful slides in animated GIF format anywhere online!

Converting select PowerPoint slides into animated GIFs lets you showcase parts of your presentation in a lightweight, shareable format.

It only takes a few clicks to export your desired slides into a continuously looping GIF animation using native PowerPoint tools.

Optimizing the GIF duration, size and branding ensures it looks great and engages viewers across devices.

So next time you make an awesome PowerPoint presentation, reuse some of those key moments as animated GIFs!

Understanding GIF and Animated Video

GIFs and animated videos serve similar functions but have key differences. GIFs are a bitmap image format with lossless compression that supports both static and animated images. An animated video, on the other hand, is a broader term for a video made from a series of animated images or frames, often with audio and more advanced effects, stored in formats like MP4 or AVI.

PowerPoint vs. GIF

PowerPoint is a presentation program that allows you to create, edit, and show presentations. A GIF is an image format, specifically for small, compressible images and short animations. You can convert a PowerPoint presentation into a GIF, but the GIF will lose all interactive elements, such as hyperlinks or clickable buttons.

File Type of GIF

GIF, an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format, is a file format (.gif) used to create and store digital images. It supports both static and animated images and is particularly popular due to its wide support and portability across platforms.

5 Ways To Make Your Own Animated GIFs

Y ou're messaging your friend, and they just told you the juiciest gossip you've ever heard. It's so utterly surprising that words simply won't cut it. So what do you do instead? You send a GIF of Chris Pratt's iconic surprised expression (from that one scene in "Parks and Recreation"), and it perfectly conveys your shock without typing a single word or needing to film a reaction video. That's the beauty of GIFs — they can easily get the message across without much of a hassle. Besides messaging, GIFs are also great for other use cases like giving flair to your otherwise static and boring presentation or serving as a fun social media post announcing your small business's new opening hours.

While the web is loaded with GIFs for nearly every mood or moment, sometimes you just won't find the exact expression for your situation. That's where making your own GIF can come in handy. We'll walk you through five ways to create a custom animated GIF using Photoshop and Photoshop alternatives like GIMP and Canva.

Using Photoshop

When it comes to editing photos, Photoshop is one of the top software of choice. However, you can also use it to turn your videos or photos into GIFs. To make an animated GIF in Photoshop , here's what you need to do:

  • Create a new file in Photoshop.
  • Drag and drop your video file into Photoshop.
  • (Optional) Change the size via Image > Image Size. Adjust the width and height to your preferred dimensions. Then, press OK. When prompted to transform the video layer to a smart object layer, select Convert.
  • (Optional) Trim the video down by adjusting the start and endpoints of the video in the Timeline window.
  • Press the play button on the Timeline window to preview the video.
  • Import your photos as separate layers via File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack. In the Load Layers dialog box, press Browse and choose the photos you need for your GIF. Hit OK to confirm.
  • Navigate to Window > Timeline.
  • Press the Create Frame Animation button in the Timeline window that opens.
  • Still in the Timeline window, select the hamburger menu at the top-right.
  • Enable Make Frames From Layers.
  • Change the time each frame is displayed by clicking on "0 sec." under each frame in the Timeline window and setting it to your desired duration.
  • (Optional) Drag and drop the frames to rearrange them.
  • To save your GIF, navigate to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). In the Save for Web dialog box, ensure that GIF is selected (found at the top) and Looping Options is set to Forever (located at the bottom) before hitting Save.

GIMP is a standout choice for those in need of advanced photo-editing capabilities but without the hefty Photoshop price tag. And just like Photoshop, GIMP allows you to make a custom GIF. Follow these steps to do so:

  • Open your photos in GIMP by going to File > Open as Layers and selecting all the images you'll be using.
  • Drag the layers to rearrange your photos in the desired order, with the top layer appearing first in your GIF.
  • If necessary, adjust subsequent layers to ensure a smooth transition from the first layer.
  • Rename each layer in the Layers panel to include the frame duration you want in parentheses. That means the first layer can be "frame 1(500ms)" and the second layer "frame 2(300ms)."
  • To check your animation, navigate to Filters > Animation > Playback, then click the play button.
  • Reduce your image's file size by selecting Filters > Animation > Optimize (for GIF).
  • Go to File > Export As.
  • Press Select File Type.
  • Choose GIF image from the options.
  • Hit Export.
  • In the Export Image as GIF dialog box, enable As animation and Loop forever.
  • If you didn't set frame durations earlier, specify your desired delay in "Delay between frames where unspecified." Check "Use delay entered above for all frames" for uniform timing.
  • For "Frame disposal where unspecified," select "One frame per layer (replace)" and ensure "Use disposal entered above for all frames" is enabled.
  • Click Export to save your custom GIF.

Using Canva

One thing you probably didn't realize you can do in Canva is make animated GIFs. Here's how:

  • Log into Canva if you haven't already.
  • Click on Create a design at the top.
  • Search for "animated social media" if you want a square GIF or "video" if you want a landscape rectangle GIF.
  • Upload your video to Canva. Alternatively, select one from Elements > Videos or Design > Templates.
  • Drag and drop the video onto your empty page.
  • Adjust the position as necessary.
  • (Optional) Increase the playback speed by selecting Playback at the top and changing the Video speed.
  • Shorten your video to the desired length by dragging the edges of the video. Free accounts can download up to one-minute GIFs and paid accounts up to two-minute GIFs, but generally, short five-second GIFs work best.
  • (Optional) Add a text and animate it.
  • Upload the photos you want to use.
  • Place each photo on a separate page.
  • Adjust the position and size as needed.
  • Click on the time indicator at the top.
  • Set it to one second per page.
  • Turn on Apply to all pages.
  • Add any elements you like. Animated stickers are best, but you can also use static graphics.
  • Adjust the GIF duration by clicking on the time at the top and entering your preferred time.
  • To animate the entire page, select the Animate button and choose your style.
  • Download your creation by selecting Share > Download, changing the File type to GIF, and pressing the Download button.

Using PowerPoint

Aside from helping you make presentations for your boss or school, PowerPoint is also a surprisingly great tool for creating GIFs. Here's a step-by-step guide to turning your PowerPoint slides into animated GIFs:

  • Start with a blank presentation.
  • Change the slide size by going to Design > Slide Size > Custom Slide Size. Adjust the width and height to your liking.
  • Go to the Insert tab.
  • Select Media on the far right of the ribbon.
  • Choose Video > This Device.
  • Position the video on your slide.
  • (Optional) Use the Video Format tab to adjust the video's size, border, shape, color, and brightness.
  • (Optional) Trim the video or add a fade duration by selecting the video and clicking the Playback tab that appears at the top.
  • To save your presentation as a GIF, navigate to File > Save as. Choose the destination and make sure to change the file type from PPTX to Animated GIF Format.
  • Upload your photos to PowerPoint from Insert > Pictures > This Device.
  • Place a different photo on each slide for a sequence or use just one and animate it. To animate your photo, head to the Animations tab and pick your effect. Adjust the Duration and Delay based on your preferences. Hit the Preview button to check out how your animation looks.
  • (Optional) Add an animated text via Insert > Text Box. Type in your text and change the font, size, color, highlight, background, and alignment in the Home tab. Then, go to Animations and apply your effect of choice.
  • To save as a GIF, go to File > Export > Create an Animated GIF. Choose the quality, set the time per slide, decide which slides to include, and if needed, make the background transparent. Hit Create GIF.

Using GIPHY

GIPHY is most people's go-to database for ready-to-use GIFs, but it also comes complete with a nifty GIF maker should you want to create your own. Follow these steps to use it:

  • Head over to the GIPHY Create page .
  • Sign up for a free account if you don't have one already.
  • In the GIF section, click on Choose File. You can use JPG, PNG, GIF, MP4, MOV, or WebM formats.
  • Trim your video by dragging the edges or entering the start and end timestamps. Do note that you can make GIFs for up to 30 seconds only.
  • Hit the "Continue to Create" button.
  • (Optional) Decorate your GIF with a text, sticker, or filter.
  • (Optional) Switch the Loop Type to Reverse to reverse the video.
  • Adjust the GIF's size as necessary.
  • Transform your static photo into a GIF by adding an animated sticker. Select Sticker (folded circle icon), search for the sticker you want to use, and click on it to place it on your photo.
  • (Optional) Add a text by clicking on the Aa icon. Type in your caption and change the font style, color, outline, and alignment.
  • (Optional) Apply a filter for extra visual appeal.
  • Change the aspect ratio of the photo as needed.
  • Once you're happy with the custom GIF, press Download at the bottom to save it to your device.
