Onam Speech

In the Indian state of Kerala, Onam is the most well-known holiday. Regardless of religion, caste, or creed, Malayalees rejoice and celebrate it with fervour throughout the state. A well-known myth claims that the event is held to welcome King Mahabali, whose ghost is claimed to travel to Kerala during Onam. A 10-day festival called Onam is observed at the beginning of Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar (Kollavarsham). This relates to the Gregorian Calendar months of August to September. The first day, Atham, and the tenth day, Thiruvonam, are the most significant of the ten days.

10 Lines Speech on Onam

3) People can take advantage of a four-day state-approved holiday during this celebration.

4) Onam is widely observed throughout Kerala and is a time of intense festivites.

5) Onam, which is also observed as tourism week, is a representation of Malayalam culture and customs.

6) The name "Onam" comes from the Sanskrit word "Shravanam," one of the 27 nakshatras.

7) The holiday of Onam honours the Lord Vishnu incarnation known as "Lord Vamana."

8) A huge royal parade that features 50 floats and 100 tableaus depicts Keralan culture during the ten-day harvest festival.

9) Onam festivities include boating, high-stakes games, folk dance, and music.

10) Kerala receives a huge influx of domestic and international tourists to take in the Onam festivities.

An integral feature of the celebration is the boat race or Vallam Kali. The participants take part in this type of boat racing. People travel to watch this amazing boat racing. The boats are known as snake boats because of their elongated appearance. All across the country, the event brightens up and cheers up the people of Kerala. It is acknowledged as one of Kerala's most significant and important festivals in India. Women and girls typically start learning to perform this at a very young age because it is a very holy craft. This is done with a lot of devotion and hard labour, and when it's finished, it looks gorgeous.

For Malayalis, Onam is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year. People from diverse communities and states where there are many Malayali settlements participate in the festivities thanks to the great blending of cultures today. They wear traditional Malayali clothing, women in Mundum neriyathum and men in kalli or kalli mundu and they feast on mouthwatering local specialities. This display of respect towards each other's traditions adds to the gaiety and makes each and every holiday in India a more unique one.

The event known as Onam unites all the communities of Kerala. Religion, caste, and creed are irrelevant on this day. People in India celebrate this holiday with great fervour; it is one of the most well-known festivals. The festivities of this occasion are well-known for their magnificent size and delectable fare throughout India. A variety of activities, including boat races, dance performances, folk music, etc., are used to celebrate Onam. The people of Kerala welcome their kind leader and inform him that their state is still thriving and brimming with vitality.

The History of Onam

The Onam celebration has long been a staple of South Indian culture. This ten-day event is largely observed by people from Kerala. It is observed between August and September. The King Mahabali legend serves as the focal point of the event. The king was a legendary figure who ruled Kerala, and his subjects approved of his authority. In his kingdom, there was no prejudice, and he was well-respected. The gods, however, were enraged by his popularity and chose to send Lord Vishnu to Earth to solve the issue. Mahabali was approached by Lord Vishnu, who was disguised as a brahmin and requested three feet of land. Being the kind of king he is, Mahabali approved his request. Then, Lord Vishnu expanded to such enormous proportions that he placed one foot on the ground, encompassing the entire world, and the other on the skies. Mahabali then offered him his head when he inquired about the placement of his third step. Mahabali was then crushed to hell by Lord Vishnu. Mahabali asked to be permitted to see his people once a year. Onam is the occasion when people commemorate the legend of Mahabali's yearly visit to his people.

The Sadya, or lunch on Thiru Onam, is the most fascinating aspect of the Onam holiday celebration. On a plantain leaf, about 26 different foods are made and presented. Attending Onam Sadya gives us the chance to taste the state's cuisine and learn about its traditions. Onam feasts are given in numerous hotels both inside and outside of Kerala. Onam only occurs once a year, yet the Malayalees' passion for it lasts till the following festival.

Celebrations of Onam

For ten days, people in Kerala celebrate this event. This festival's days have a unique meaning. People, therefore, honour them all in different ways. People cook a vast range of foods and serve them on banana leaves.

The festivities showcase Kerala's rich culture and history. In other words, this celebration is essentially a 10-day carnival in the state. To welcome King Mahabali, people create floral displays in front of their homes.

The Onam dance is very well-liked across the nation. Kathakali, Pulikali/Kaduvakali, Kummatti Kali, Kaikotti Kali, and other traditional performances are only a few examples. Similarly to that, the festival's annual snake boat race is a top draw. It is known as Vallamkali.

Each boat has 100 rowers, each of whom is a man. The River Pampa is the site of the race. The Uthrattathi Boat Race and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race are two other well-known competitions.

The Onam Sadhya is yet another significant feature of this event. It's a feast with a variety of vegetarian cuisine. It is served on the festival's final day and is exceedingly opulent.

Onam is a celebration that unites all Keralans. It is a celebration that eliminates all the limitations we have put in place. Every year, people celebrate it with enthusiasm and delight. The celebration serves as Kerala's national holiday. It's a harvest celebration. In a country like India, where the economy is mostly agrarian and dependent on the harvest, the people celebrate every holiday that is associated with the harvest.

Essay on Onam Festival 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Onam festival Essay in English, suitable for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Onam is one of the most famous festivals of Kerala. People irrespective of their religion, age, or community celebrate Onam with a lot of zest and enthusiasm. The celebration of this colourful festival has been going on for quite long, and it continues even in this modern era. The word Onam originated from the Sanskrit word Shravanam. This word implies one of the twenty-seven constellations (Nakshatra). There are some other words for this festival like Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam. Thiru refers to something related to Lord Vishnu, and Thiruvonam refers to the Nakshatra of Lord Vishnu. Onam is usually celebrated at the end of August and the beginning of September. According to the Malayalam calendar, this month is known at Chingam. This annual harvest festival lasts for as long as ten days. These ten days serve to be the most delightful days for the people in Kerala.

Major Attractions of Onam Festival

The ten days of Onam is similar to a carnival. To witness these enthusiastic celebrations, tourists (both domestic and foreign) line up in Kerala. Some of the best features of the celebrations have been mentioned below:

  • Pookalam: This refers to a colourful and complex design which is made by using different kinds of flowers. It is usually made in front of the gate of your house. With the progression of the days of Onam, a new layer of flowers gets added to the Pookalam
  • Onam Dance: Out of all the highlighted features of Onam, the folk dance stands out the most. Performed by women, these dance forms are certainly the major attraction of the festival. Some of the traditional dances include Kathakali, Pulikali, Kaikotti Kali, and Thumbi Thullal.
  • Onam Sadhya: This is the lavish feast which is prepared on the tenth day of the festival. This grand meal consists of a variety of vegetarian dishes. It is mostly served on a banana leaf. Households prepare at least nine to eleven dishes for Onam Sadhya. Temples and restaurants can have as many as thirty dishes for the same.
  • Vallamkali Boat Race: This is the traditional snake boat race that serves to be the most fun event of Onam. This race takes place in river Pampa. Each boat is decorated beautifully and contains about a hundred men. People from all around the state come to the spot and witness this remarkable race.
  • Elephant Procession: This is one of the most awaited events of the celebration of Onam. Elephants are decorated with flowers and other precious metals. These majestic creatures are adorned with gold. The procession starts in Thrissur where they are made to take a whole round. Their small gestures entertain the crowd.

Why is Onam Celebrated?

There is a story behind the celebration of this great festival. Onam marks the homecoming of King Mahabali. Ancient history references mention that Lord Vishnu disguised as a dwarf Brahmin (Vamana). He then attended a Yaagam arranged by the King. The King had promised to fulfil all the wishes of the people who were present in the Yaagam. Hearing this, Vamana declared his wish. He wanted to place three footsteps on the land and own those areas. Mahabali agreed to his wish. Suddenly Vamana grew to be a giant. With just two footsteps, he claimed both Earth and heaven.

As there was no more land left for him, Mahabali sacrificed something to protect his promise. The great King offered his head for the piece of land. However, he had one condition. He wished to return to his home and be welcomed by his people once every year. It is believed that Mahabali rules the underworld (Paatal). Every year, he visits his subjects and blesses them. The ten days of festivities imply the time taken for him to travel back and forth between the two realms. Hence, Onam is celebrated with a lot of extravaganzas to welcome the much revered King.

Ten Days of Onam Festival

Each day of this festival has its significance. These ten days are both unique in their names and the way they are celebrated. Here we have mentioned a few points on the same:

  • Atham: This is the auspicious first day of Onam. King Mahabali starts preparing for his journey to the Earth. People start designing Pookalam with bright yellow flowers. Idols of Vamana and Mahabali are placed in every household.
  • Chithira: This is the second day of the celebration. People start cleaning their houses. And another layer of flowers is added to the Pookalam.
  • Chodhi: Designs in the Pookalam get increased on this day. People also go for shopping.
  • Vishakam: This is the day filled with a lot of activities. Numerous competitions are organized on this day of the Onam celebration.
  • Anizham: The Vallamkali boat race starts in different parts of Kerala.
  • Thriketa: By this sixth day, all educational institutes are closed. People start to devote more time to the celebration. They visit each other’s homes in the get-together.
  • Moolam: This day is all about glee and joy. At many places, Onam Sadhya and other dance programs are organized. By this time, the entire state gets decorated and looks beautiful.
  • Pooradam: Devotees prepare the clay idols of Vamana and Mahabali. These idols are then installed in the center of the Pookalam.
  • Uthradam: This is the ninth day of Onam, and it holds a lot of value. Fresh vegetables are bought, and traditional meals are prepared using these items. It is believed Mahabali reaches the land of Kerala on this day.
  • Thiruvonam: The big day of this entire festival leads to the peak of celebrations. People wake up early and visit the temples. Special prayer sessions go on every temple on this final day. Several gifts get distributed. The special meal of Onam, Thiruona Sadya, is enjoyed by everyone.

Onam is an important festival celebrated in Kerala. The festival has a lot of significance in the Malayali culture and an interesting legend behind the celebrations.

History And Significance Of Onam

Onam is a festival that celebrates the homecoming of King Mahabali. He was known for his generosity and strong character. He was very proud of his acquisitions and the prosperity of his kingdom. Lord Vishnu visited his court in the form of a tiny Brahmin. The tiny Brahmin asked the king for three pieces of land that his feet could cover. Seeing the tiny form, the king immediately agreed to this request. It was then that the Lord expanded his form to large proportions. With his first step, he covered the entire Earth; with the second step, he covered the whole sky. When he had no more space left for his third step, King Mahabali recognised the power of the Lord, stepped down and bowed below the Lord, offering his own head for Lord Vishnu’s third step. The great ruler attained Moksha and asked permission to visit his kingdom once a year to enjoy looking at the country’s prosperity. To celebrate this homecoming of King Mahabali, people celebrate Onam. In some parts of Kerala, some people dress up as King Mahabali to help children understand the festival’s significance. Kerala comes alive during the festival of Onam with celebrations spreading over ten days and families enjoying elaborate meals, making rangolis with flowers, and other festivities like dance, races, and cultural events all over the state.

The 10 Days Of Onam

Onam is celebrated for over ten days with cultural programmes, dance performances and floral arrangements like rangoli. Below are the main festival traditions:

  • Day 1 – Atham:  On this day, people take an early bath, offer prayers and make rangoli with flowers called pookalam in front of their homes to welcome the king.
  • Day 2 – Chithira:  On the second day, people add two more layers of orange and yellow flowers to the pookalam
  • Day 3 – Chodhi:  People add another layer of flowers, and buy new clothes and jewellery.
  • Day 4 – Vishakam:  This day marks the beginning of the feast called Onam Sadhya. A traditional nine-course meal comprising 11-26 items is served on a banana leaf.

  • Day 10 – Thiruvonam:  On the last day, people make rangolis on the entrances of their homes with rice batter, and people light fireworks in the evening.

Major Attractions And Festivities

Onam celebrations are like a carnival spread over days. Some major attractions and festivities celebrate togetherness apart from the religious ceremonies. A few festivals are:

  • Pookalam:  Rangoli is made with flowers by laying down ten flowers. With time, people have started adding more flowers, too.
  • Dance:  Pulikali, Kathakali, and Kaikotikali are some popular dances performed by men and women.
  • Onam Sadhya:  A lavish feast is prepared and served on a plantain leaf. People prepare more than 20 dishes with the harvest of the year.
  • Vallamkali Boat Race:  A traditional race is organised in the river Pampa. Boats are decorated and rowed by hundreds of men.
  • Elephant Procession:  Elephants are decorated with flowers and ornaments and paraded in temples.

A composition on Onam will teach your child about the unique culture of Kerala and the importance of one of the ten avatars of Vishnu. The Lord took this avatar to tell people to remain grounded and not let their success ride in their heads.

1. What is Pookalam?

Pookalam is a rangoli with flowers made to welcome King Mahabali with a riot of colours.

2. What Message Does Onam Festival Give?

The festival marks the celebration of a glorious past and teaches us that to realise a dream, we need to put in the effort. Giving, loving, sharing and celebrating together is the essence of Onam.

The Onam festival celebration is famous in Kerala. During this time, Kerala is known for its happiness, excitement, and enjoyment among all the communities. It is an outcome of mythological reasons as well as old agrarian practices. The harvest festival of Kerala, also known as the festival of rain flowers, is a ten-day-long festival celebrated with enthusiasm. It is in the month of Chingam as per the Malayalam calendar, usually starting in mid-August and lasting until mid-September.

In 2023, the Thiruvonam celebration will be on 29th August 2023 . In honour of King Mahabali, who visits Kerala at the time of Onam, the festival celebration takes place. During this time, Kerala opens up with an entirely new world of exotic taste, exquisite fragrances, and an enchanting display of beauty for tourists. The festivities and celebration at the festival lighten up the soul of individuals and make their body dance with exciting beats of music.

It is a harvest festival, and celebrations in Kerala include Sadhya, Thiruvathira Kali, Pookalam, Ona-thallus, Pulikali, Onavillu, and welcome songs for King Mahabali . The ten days of the festival represent a remarkable display of the culture and beauty of Kerala.

The prominent features of the festival are the intricate design of Pookalam, aromatic Onasadya , spectacular snake-boat race, and enticing folk dance.

Onam Celebrations in Kerala

The celebrations have a traditional touch to all the festivity and rituals. Here are some of the essential features of the festival:

Onam Pookalam

Flower beds and floral decorations are known as Pookalam. It is the first thing that comes to mind when talking about the legend of Mahabali and Onam. The traditional Pookalam consists of ten rings which indicate the ten-day rituals performed during Onam starting from Atham and ending on Thiruonam in the month of Chingam.

It stands as a sign of secularism. It symbolises the spirit of unity and teamwork as all the members of the family together complete it. Different kinds of beautiful flowers are used to complete the intricate design of Pookalam. The design starts on the day of Atham and ends on Thiruvonam, signifying the good old days during King Mahabali’s reign.

The harvest festival of Kerala is celebrated with a colourful feast served on a banana leaf featuring over 25 dishes called “Onam Sadhya.” Onasadhya is a famous traditional meal of Kerala and is served on a banana leaf on the last day of the festival, Thiruonam. It means Onam food feast, which is a symbol of prosperity that existed during the rule of Mahabali. The people of Kerala try to ensure that their King Mahabali sees them with the grandest meal on this auspicious day. All the people across all regions in Kerala prepare grand Onasadhya on this day.

The traditional food is served on a big, properly washed, green banana leaf with a Pappad on the left. Sarkaravaratti, banana wafers, salt, and fries are served on the right side of the pappad, next to which lies the ginger lime and mango pickles. Vegetarian items like pavakka, ullikitchadi, and kitchadi are placed next. Thoran is served after these items, and after the meal payasam is served as a dessert.

Snake Boat Races

Another important and prominent festivity is the ‘Snake Boat Race’ held in ‘Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple.’ The famous harvest festival of Kerala is celebrated in the month of Chingam, which is in August and September. It is the best time to visit Kerala and experience the traditions of the state. Kerala is full of magnificence during Onam. One can also enjoy the exotic taste of Onasadhya, participate in decorating Pookalam, and witness the true beauty of Kerala during this festival.

Similar to any other traditional and cultural event, this also includes a lot of dancing and singing associated with Onam celebrations. Pulikali, also known as Kaduvakali, is a beautiful folk art that is skillfully performed by well-trained dancers to amuse and entertain the people at the festival. The artists dance excitedly and perform the hunting moves with the beat of the musical instruments.

In Malayali, Pulikali means ‘play of the tigers.’ On the fourth day of Onam, known as Nalaam Onam, performers paint themselves as hunters and tigers with yellow, black, and red paints and dance to the sound of thrilling music like Thakil and Udukku. The theme of the performance is based on ‘tiger hunting.’

The dance is famous in the ‘Thrissur District’ of Kerala. The best place to witness the dance is ‘Swaraj Round,’ where Pulikali performing groups from the entire district gather to perform folk art. This humongous festival attracts a lot of attention from around the world during this season.

Onam, the harvest festival of the state of Kerala, is famous for its culture and tradition. It attracts a lot of tourist attention during this period from across the world. The ten-day festival is famous for different cultural activities, including the Pookalam, Onasdhya, Pulikali, and the snake boat race.
