APA Style online (use Style & Grammar Guidelines menu)

Information needed for citations:

• Author name(s)
• Date of publication
• Title of article
• Title of source (e.g. journal, etc.) plus volume number and issue number
• Inclusive page numbers of article
• DOI (if included)

The DOI (digital object identifier) is a unique number that provides a persistent link to the location of content on the internet. It should be formatted as a URL.

• Example: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0222224

If there is no DOI listed for an article, the citation ends after the page range of the article. Do not include database information for works obtained from most academic research databases or platforms because works in these resources are widely available. 

• Authors are typed as Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial.  (Marie L. Jones would be Jones, M. L.)
• If there is no author listed, list the title of the article first, capitalizing the first word. 
• Note that only the first word, proper nouns, and the word immediately after a colon are capitalized within the title of the article.

In-Text Citations: Narrative Citations

• Example: Jones (2009) found that diabetes symptoms improve with exercise.

In-Text Citations: Parenthetical Citations

• Example: Increased exercise resulted in diminished diabetes symptoms (Jones, 2009).
• Example: Increased exercise resulted in diminished diabetes symptoms (Jones & Smith, 2009).
• Example: Blood glucose levels were observed to decrease following aerobic activity (Jones, et al., 2008).

• every in-text citation must have a corresponding citation on the References page
• no source should be included on the References page if there is no corresponding in-text citation in the paper

How to cite an online journal article in APA

To cite an online journal article in a reference entry in APA style 6th edition include the following elements:

• Author(s) of the article: Give the last name and initials (e. g. Watson, J. D.) of up to seven authors with the last name preceded by an ampersand (&). For eight or more authors include the first six names followed by an ellipsis (…) and add the last author's name.
• Year of publication: Give the year in brackets followed by a full stop.
• Title of the research article: Only the first letter of the first word and proper nouns are capitalized.
• Title of periodical: Give the full, non-abbreviated title of the periodical in title case. It should also be italicized.
• Volume number: The volume number is also italicized.
• Issue number: For journals that are paginated by issue give the issue number in brackets.
• Page numbers: Give the full page range.
• DOI or URL: Include the digital object identifier (DOI) if one is assigned or start with 'Retrieved from' followed by the URL.

Here is the basic format for a reference list entry of an online journal article in APA style 6th edition:

Author(s) of the article . ( Year of publication ). Title of the research article . Title of periodical , Volume number ( Issue number ) Page numbers . DOI or URL

To cite an online journal article in a reference entry in APA style 7th edition include the following elements:

• Author(s) of the article: Give the last name and initials (e. g. Watson, J. D.) of up to 20 authors with the last name preceded by an ampersand (&). For 21 or more authors include the first 19 names followed by an ellipsis (…) and add the last author's name.
• DOI or URL: Include the digital object identifier (DOI) as a hyperlink starting with 'https://doi.org/'. If no DOI can be found, include the URL that directly links to the cited work.

Here is the basic format for a reference list entry of an online journal article in APA style 7th edition:

Journal Article- No DOI

Note: All citations should be double spaced and have a hanging indent in a Reference List.

A "hanging indent" means that each subsequent line after the first line of your citation should be indented by 0.5 inches.

• APA 7th. ed. Journal Article Reference Checklist

If an item has no author, start the citation with the article title.

When an article has one to twenty authors, all authors' names are cited in the References List entry. When an article has twenty-one or more authors list the first nineteen authors followed by three spaced ellipse points (. . .) , and then the last author's name. Rules are different for in-text citations; please see the examples provided.

Cite author names in the order in which they appear on the source, not in alphabetical order (the first author is usually the person who contributed the most work to the publication).

Italicize titles of journals, magazines and newspapers. Do not italicize or use quotation marks for the titles of articles.

Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the article title. If there is a colon in the article title, also capitalize the first letter of the first word after the colon.

If an item has no date, use the short form n.d. where you would normally put the date.

Volume and Issue Numbers

Italicize volume numbers but not issue numbers.

Retrieval Dates

Most articles will not need these in the citation. Only use them for online articles from places where content may change often, like a free website or a wiki.

Page Numbers

If an article doesn't appear on continuous pages, list all the page numbers the article is on, separated by commas. For example (4, 6, 12-14)

Library Database

Do not include the name of a database for works obtained from most academic research databases (e.g. APA PsycInfo, CINAHL) because works in these resources are widely available. Exceptions are Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ERIC, ProQuest Dissertations, and UpToDate.

Include the DOI (formatted as a URL: https://doi.org/...) if it is available. If you do not have a DOI, include a URL if the full text of the article is available online (not as part of a library database). If the full text is from a library database, do not include a DOI, URL, or database name.

In the Body of a Paper

Books, Journals, Reports, Webpages, etc.: When you refer to titles of a “stand-alone work,” as the APA calls them on their APA Style website, such as books, journals, reports, and webpages, you should italicize them. Capitalize words as you would for an article title in a reference, e.g., In the book Crying in H Mart: A memoir , author Michelle Zauner (2021) describes her biracial origin and its impact on her identity.

Article or Chapter: When you refer to the title of a part of a work, such as an article or a chapter, put quotation marks around the title and capitalize it as you would for a journal title in a reference, e.g., In the chapter “Where’s the Wine,” Zauner (2021) describes how she decided to become a musician.

Note: Separate the authors' names by putting a comma between them. For the final author listed add an ampersand (&) after the comma and before the final author's last name.

Note: In the reference list invert all authors' names; give last names and initials for only up to and including 20 authors. When a source has 21 or more authors, include the first 19 authors’ names, then three ellipses (…), and add the last author’s name. Don't include an ampersand (&) between the ellipsis and final author.

Note : For works with three or more authors, the first in-text citation is shortened to include the first author's surname followed by "et al."

Basic structure for an article: 

Author, a. a., & author, b. b. (year). title of article in non-italics: capital letter also for subtitle.  journal title in italics, volume# (issue#), pg#-pg#. https://doi.org/10.xxxxxxxx.

You can leave out any parts that you don't have, like a DOI, the volume, issue, or page numbers.

Online or Print, with DOI (p. 316+ in Manual)

On all article citations, whether you read online or print, include the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) if available.  The DOI is like a digital thumbprint: its unique and permanent numbers and letters help identify it. It is typically on the first or last page of the article. It may also be listed in the  CrossRef Database . If you are having trouble finding the DOI,  ask a librarian .  If there is no DOI, see  this example . 

Note  that as of March 2017,  CrossRef  and  APA  both recommend that DOIs be formatted as such:  https://doi.org/10.xxxx/xxxxx  with no period at the end.  

In-text Citation

Parenthetical Citation :  The Coast Guard narrative provides meaning to the practice of modern day piracy (Bueger, 2013).

Narrative Citation : According to Bueger (2013) the coast guard narrative can be treated as a "meaningful fiction which gives coherence to the practice of piracy" (p. 1824). 

Two Authors

List both authors in the order they appear in the article. Use an ampersand (&) rather than "and" between the author names.

Parenthetical Citation : In the fast fashion business model, retailers use enhanced design and quick response to complement each other (Cachon & Swinney, 2005).

Narrative Citation : Cachon & Swinney (2005) explain how enhanced design and quick response complement each other in the fast fashion retail model. 

Three or more authors 

List each author in the order they appear in the article. Use an ampersand (&) rather than "and" between the last two.

If you have more than 20 authors, list the first 19 authors, then ..., then the last author (so there is a total of 20 names in the citation). 

Parenthetical Citation :  Group membership may determine the bias of language used by an individual describing a specific event (Wenneker et al., 2005).

Narrative Citation : According to Wenneker et al., (2005) an individual's group membership may determine the bias of language used to describe a specific event.

Report (see p. 329-330 in Manual)

After the report title, include any report number if available and the Source, which can be thought of like the Publisher of a book.

Group Author or Government Report (see p. 329-330 in Manual)

In governmental reports, you can have multiple "levels," or offices/departments, in the Source element, separated by a comma.

The  Author  is the office that was most directly responsible for creating the content, and any parent offices are the  Source . If you aren't sure which office created the content, look on Google or on their general webpage to figure out the structure -- which office is "under" another office?

Parenthetical Citation :  Law enforcement agencies have started to increase the use of drones since 2016 for a variety of purposes (Police Executive Research Forum, 2020).

Narrative Citation : According to the Police Executive Research Forum (2020), law enforcement agencies have been using drones for a variety of purposes such as search and rescue, crime scene reconstruction, and disaster response.

Named Author 

Parenthetical Citation :  A large share of the manufacturing labor force in certain developing countries consists of self-employed individuals (McKenzie, 2009).

Narrative Citation : McKenzie (2009) states that "Self-employment accounts for a large share of the labor force in most developing countries" (p.211).

Online or Print, no DOI  (p. 317 in Manual)

Italicize the journal title and volume number, but not the issue number in parentheses. 

Parenthetical Citation : The limited academic presence of Latino scholars has led to non-Latino administrators and colleagues having a greater impact on Latino Studies programs (Aparicio, 1999).

Narrative Citation : According to Aparicio (1999), the limited academic presence of Latino scholars translates to non-Latino administrators and colleagues having a greater impact on Latino Studies programs.

Magazine (p. 320 in Manual)

Online with no doi.

Include the stable URL. Page numbers, volume, and issue may be omitted if not available. 

Parenthetical Citation :  Marcus Hutchins was lauded as the hacker who saved the internet for his work in stopping the WannaCry cyber security attack (Greenberg, 2020).

Narrative Citation : Greenberg (2020) outlined Marcus Hutchins journey from creating malware to being lauded as the hacker who saved the internet.

Print or from a Database with no DOI

Italicize the magazine title and volume number, but not the issue number in parentheses.  If a magazine has a month and/or date, you may include that.

Parenthetical Citation :  Approximately 20 million Americans have been recruited for clinical trials each year (Rodgers, 2009).

Narrative Citation : Rodgers (2009) estimates that approximately 20 million Americans have been recruited for clinical trials each year. 

Newspaper (p. 320 in Manual)

• Use this format for articles from both print newspapers as well as newspaper websites such as  The New York Times  or  The Washington Post.
• Use the format for  websites  for citing articles from a news website. Common examples are BBC News, BET News, Bloomberg, CNN, HuffPost, MSNBC, Reuters, Salon, and Vox. These sites do not have associated daily or weekly newspapers.

Parenthetical Citation :  Foreign language instruction supporters would prefer the integration of lessons into the core curriculum thus preventing their easy removal during budget cuts (Hu, 2009).

Narrative Citation : Hu (2009) reports that supporters of foreign language instruction would prefer lessons be integrated into the core curriculum to prevent their easy removal during budget cuts. 

Print or from a Database with no DOI 

If an article appears on discontinuous pages, list each of the page numbers where it appears. For multiple pages, use "pp." Most newspapers have a month and/or date, so include that.

Parenthetical Citation : The recent migrant crisis has caused the police chief to reach out to state and federal elected officials for financial support (Fidlin, 2023).

Narrative Citation : According to Fidlin (2023) the police chief has reached out to state and federal elected officials for financial support to aid in the recent migrant crisis.

No Author, Volume, or Issue Number 

Remember that APA encourages researchers to use the name of a corporate author, a governmental organization, an office, a department, etc. as the author (see  an example like this) .

However, if no author can be found, as is sometimes the case with newspaper and magazine articles, begin the citation with the title of the article. 

Parenthetical Citation :  Close to three hundred deaths reported in Alberta in 2015 have been connected to illicit fentanyl (How Globe and Mail reporters traced the rise of fentanyl, 2016).

Narrative Citation : According to the article, How Globe and Mail reporters traced the rise of fentanyl (2015) close to three hundred deaths reported in Alberta in 2015 have been connected to illicit fentanyl. 

Parenthetical Citation :  The Hmong in Minnesota have continued their cultural traditions such as celebrating the Hmong New Year in spite of  expatriation (In the US, Hmong New Year, 2023).

Note: Shorten the title for the in-text citation if it is too long.

Parenthetical Citation : Music therapy is a good way for teachers to help engage their students in the classroom (Fistek et al., 2017).

Narrative Citation : Fistek et al. (2017) argue that music therapy is a good way for teachers to help their students in the classroom.

•   Do Not copy and paste URLS from library databases or other platforms that restrict public access.

🤔 What is an APA Citation Generator?

An APA citation generator is a software tool that will automatically format academic citations in the American Psychological Association (APA) style.

It will usually request vital details about a source -- like the authors, title, and publish date -- and will output these details with the correct punctuation and layout required by the official APA style guide.

A journal is a scholarly periodical that presents research from experts in a certain field. Typically, but not always, these journals are peer-reviewed in order to ensure that published articles are of the highest quality. • If your source is found online, but there is no DOI provided, you can include the URL instead.

• Unlike previous editions, the current edition does not require including a retrieval date or date accessed for online sources. A retrieval date is only necessary if the source is likely to change (ex. Wikipedia, encyclopedia entry, Facebook homepage, etc.).

Abstract : Abstract is a brief synopses of article. It provides a brief but comprehensive summary of the article. 

Citing : In the context of academic writing, citing is the act of acknowledging the sources of information you have used when writing your work.

Citation:  A citation gives credit to a source, and contains publication information such as author(s), title and date.

DOI (digital object identifier): It is a unique alphanumeric string assigned to a digital object, mainly a scholarly article, to provide a persistent link to its location on the internet. 

In-Text Citation : It is a brief note that appears within the body of the paper and briefly identifies the cited work by its author and date of publication. An in-text citation should always match the corresponding entry in the reference list at the end of paper.

Paraphrasing : A paraphrase restates another’s idea (or your own previously published idea) in your own words. 

Plagiarism : It is the act of presenting the words, ideas, or images of another as your own; it denies creators of content the credit they are due. 

Quoting : It is the act of reproducing the exact wording used by the original author. Direct quotations appear within quotation marks and end with a citation.

Reference : It contains details about one cited work, generally including four elements:  author, date, title, and source.  

Reference List : It identifies all the sources you cited in the text of your paper. It generally is at the end of the paper and definitely on a new page after the text of your paper. 

APA Style is the most common writing style used in college and career. Its purpose is to promote excellence in communication by helping writers create clear, precise, and inclusive sentences with a straightforward scholarly tone. It addresses areas of writing such as how to

• format a paper so it looks professional;
• credit other people’s words and ideas via citations and references to avoid plagiarism; and
• describe other people with dignity and respect using inclusive, bias-free language.

APA Style is primarily used in the behavioral sciences, which are subjects related to people, such as psychology, education, and nursing. It is also used by students in business, engineering, communications, and other classes. Students use it to write academic essays and research papers in college, and professionals use it to conduct, report, and publish scientific research.

Why is learning citations important? Citations help readers understand where the information used in your paper comes from, enabling them to trace the path of that information. When readers wish to explore a specific point or reference cited in the text, citations make it easier by providing information about your sources in a standardized format.

Besides showing readers where you obtained information, using citations also has a strong ethical purpose. In academic writing, it is important to credit ideas that are not your own. Citations allow you to integrate the ideas of others with your own thoughts in a fair and honest way.

The reference formats for APA Style manuals are as follows:

APA Style provides a foundation for effective scholarly communication because it helps authors present their ideas in a clear and concise, and organized manner.  Uniformity and consistency enable readers to (a) focus on the ideas being presented rather than formatting and (b) scan works quickly for key points, findings, and sources. When style works best, ideas flow logically, sources are credited appropriately, and papers are organized predictably and consistently.

In an APA Style paper, every page has a page header. For student papers, the page header usually consists of just a page number in the page’s top-right corner. For professional papers intended for publication, it also includes a running head .

A running head is simply the paper’s title in all capital letters. It is left-aligned and can be up to 50 characters in length. Longer titles are abbreviated .

APA headings have five possible levels. Heading level 1 is used for main sections such as “ Methods ” or “ Results ”. Heading levels 2 to 5 are used for subheadings. Each heading level is formatted differently.

The title page is the first page of an APA Style paper. There are different guidelines for student and professional papers.

Both versions include the paper title and author’s name and affiliation. The student version includes the course number and name, instructor name, and due date of the assignment. The professional version includes an author note and running head .

The abstract is a 150–250 word summary of your paper. An abstract is usually required in professional papers, but it’s rare to include one in student papers (except for longer texts like theses and dissertations).

The abstract is placed on a separate page after the title page . At the top of the page, write the section label “Abstract” (bold and centered). The contents of the abstract appear directly under the label. Unlike regular paragraphs, the first line is not indented. Abstracts are usually written as a single paragraph without headings or blank lines.

Directly below the abstract, you may list three to five relevant keywords . On a new line, write the label “Keywords:” (italicized and indented), followed by the keywords in lowercase letters, separated by commas.

APA Style does not provide guidelines for formatting the table of contents . It’s also not a required paper element in either professional or student papers. If your instructor wants you to include a table of contents, it’s best to follow the general guidelines.

Place the table of contents on a separate page between the abstract and introduction. Write the section label “Contents” at the top (bold and centered), press “Enter” once, and list the important headings with corresponding page numbers.

The APA reference page is placed after the main body of your paper but before any appendices . Here you list all sources that you’ve cited in your paper (through APA in-text citations ). APA provides guidelines for formatting the references as well as the page itself.

Formatting the reference page

Write the section label “References” at the top of a new page (bold and centered). Place the reference entries directly under the label in alphabetical order.

Finally, apply a hanging indent , meaning the first line of each reference is left-aligned, and all subsequent lines are indented 0.5 inches.

Tables and figures are presented in a similar format. They’re preceded by a number and title and followed by explanatory notes (if necessary).

Use bold styling for the word “Table” or “Figure” and the number, and place the title on a separate line directly below it (in italics and title case). Try to keep tables clean; don’t use any vertical lines, use as few horizontal lines as possible, and keep row and column labels concise.

Keep the design of figures as simple as possible. Include labels and a legend if needed, and only use color when necessary (not to make it look more appealing).

What is an Annotated Bibliography? Why do I have to do one?

An annotated bibliography is composed of an APA citation of a source followed by notes and commentary about that source. The word “annotate” means “to make critical or explanatory notes” and the word “bibliography” means “a list of sources”--so, an annotated bibliography is a list of sources combined with notes about each source.

Creating an annotated bibliography helps you to become a better researcher and focus your research topic. By starting the research process early (before your extended proposals are due), you can make sure that you've picked a topic that will yield enough information to write your proposal. You'll also read the articles you find and write about them, which ensures that you've found information that is relevant to your topic. Annotated bibliographies are great preparation for major research assignments!

Formatting an Annotated Bibliography

Formatting your annotated bibliography is the same as formatting an APA reference list. You use the same author-date style and place the elements in the same order. Here’s a quick rundown of the guidelines:

• Right-aligned page number
• Running header (Optional)
• One-inch margins

• The title “Annotated Bibliography” centered
• Hanging indent for second and subsequent lines of the citation

Organizing an annotated bibliography.

An annotated bibliography is organized in the same manner as the reference list. Alphabetize using the letter by letter system by the author’s last name.

Creating an APA Citation

After your APA annotated bibliography is formatted, you create a citation for each entry. The composition of your citation varies based on the type of source you are using. For example, a book citation in APA is different than a journal citation. Therefore, when creating your citation, use the format APA has designated for that specific source

How to Write an Annotation

The first step to creating your APA annotations is reading the source and making notes about the relevant information it contains. Once you've read the source, create your annotation using the guidelines below: • 2 to 4 sentences to summarize the main idea(s) of the source.      - What are the main arguments?      - What is the point of this book/article?      - What topics are covered? • 1 or 2 sentences to assess and evaluate the source.      - How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography?      - Is this information reliable? current?      - Is the author credible? have the background to write on this topic?      - Is the source objective or biased? • 1 or 2 sentences to reflect on the source.      - Was this source helpful to you? The length of your bibliographic entry depends on your instructor’s guidelines but typically is about 100-300 words.

APA style dictates that authors are named with their last name followed by their initials; publication year goes between parentheses, followed by a period. The title of the article is in sentence-case, meaning only the first word and proper nouns in the title are capitalized. The periodical title is run in title case, and is followed by the volume number which, with the title, is also italicized. If a DOI has been assigned to the article that you are using, you should include this after the page numbers for the article. If no DOI has been assigned and you are accessing the periodical online, use the URL of the website from which you are retrieving the periodical.
