The 10 Best Wedding Speeches From Movies Of All-Time

Let's lift our glasses to these classic movie toasts.

Last updated on Nov 17, 2023

Group of friends having a wedding toast

The toast: It's one of — no, scratch that — it is the best part of any wedding. The best man shares embarrassing stories of the groom from their college days, the maid of honor recalls fond memories of her childhood spent with the bride playing dress-up, parents get choked up and everyone lifts their glasses to wish the happy newlyweds a happily ever after.

Of course, if you've ever been to a wedding, you'll also know how funny, heartfelt or even, dare we say, wacky wedding toast ideas can be.

So naturally, toasts have made for some great Hollywood scenes. After all, remember that scene in My Best Friend's Wedding when Julia Roberts begs for groom Michael O'Neal to love her back? Or that other scene in Bridesmaids when Kristen Wiig toasts her best friend and bride-to-be Maya Rudolph in Spanish (random)?

Let's lift our glasses to some of these classic favorites...

Here are the top 10 best wedding speeches from movies of all time:

1. my best friend's wedding.

"I had the strangest dream. I dreamed that some psychopath was trying to break the two of you up. Luckily, I woke up, and I see that the world is just as it should be. For my best friend ... has won the best woman."

OK, so Julianne (Julia Roberts) wasn't the best of best friends in this rom-com. After her embarrassingly desperate attempt to break up her best friend's wedding, she raises a glass to the newlyweds with her sincerest apologies.

2. Bridesmaids

"Lillian and I took Spanish together in school. And so, I would just like to say to you and to everyone here, 'Gracias para vivar en la casa, en la escuelas, en... en la azul... markada. Tienes con bibir en las fortuashla and gracias."

The craziness never seemed to end for bride-to-be Lillian (Maya Rudolph), maid of (dis)honor Annie (Kristen Wiig) and their entourage of ladies, between getting kicked off an airline en route to a bachelorette party, Mexican food poisoning, dress shopping (gone terribly, terribly wrong) and Annie's freakout at the bridal shower.

But, in the end, they still tied the knot and the friendship between the BFFs smoothed out.

3. Four Weddings and A Funeral

"I am as ever in bewildered awe of anyone who this kind of commitment that Angus and Laure have made today. I know I couldn't do it and I think it's wonderful they can."

Charles (Hugh Grant) and Carrie (Andie McDowell) always run into each other at weddings (four, actually if you couldn't guess from the title ... plus one funeral). It's the classic case of having a strong but fleeting connection with a stranger.

And if you ever doubted Hugh Grant as an on-screen charmer, you need to watch his speech as best man.

4. The Deer Hunter

The Deer Hunter, which by genre is really more of a war drama, isn't exactly what comes to mind when you think of weddings. But there is a subtle love story in the movie between Mike (Robert De Niro) and his friend Nick's girlfriend Linda (Meryl Streep).

At a friend's wedding reception, Mike and the guys get drunk, having a good time. That's when they notice a soldier dressed in uniform sitting at the bar who gives what is probably the best two-line wedding toast ever.

5. Wedding Crashers

"True love is the soul's recognition of its counterpoint in another."

We can't help but secretly love the womanizing duo of John (Owen Wilson) and Jeremy (Vince Vaughn). Among all the other rules in their bro code, they steadfastly stick to Rule #5: Never let a girl get between you and a fellow Crasher .

But when they sneak into one wedding where John falls in love with Claire (Rachel McAdams), that rule gets put to the test. And Claire's too-sweet toast kinda seals the deal.

6. The 5-Year Engagement

"This is supposed to be exciting. It's your wedding — you only get a few of these!"

It was a long, long, (really long) walk down the aisle for Tom (Jason Segel) and his girlfriend Violet (Emily Blunt). And this slideshow at their engagement party made things even more awkward.

7. The Hangover 2

"That was a great speech, sir. I liked the comparisons between Stu and rice."

There's always that one guy — whether it's his drunk uncle or your weirdo cousin — who just doesn't have a clue when it comes to social etiquette. If you thought anyone in your family was awkward, this should make you feel a whole lot better. (Trust us, you aren't alone.)

8. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

"We're all different, but in the end, we're all fruit."

It took a little while for the Portokalos family to warm up to Toula's (Nia Vardalos) fiancé Ian (John Corbett), but her father Gus (Michael Constantine) breaks down the cultural differences between them in one sweet, beautifully simple analogy.

9. The Wedding Singer

"Harold ain't so perfect. Remember that time in Puerto Rico when we picked up those two... well, I guess they were prostitutes, but I don't remember paying."

Even after being stood up at the altar on his wedding day, Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler) never gave up on love. (Heck, what kind of wedding singer would he be if he didn't?)

When he befriends and inevitably falls for a waitress named Julia (Drew Barrymore), he won't let love get away a second time, so he performs a song on the plane she's boarding. But before that, at a wedding he's performing for, the groom's drunk brother gets on stage to make a pretty awkward speech. (Drunk, of course.)

10. Sex And The City (The Movie)

"In our group, we never kiss and tell..."

Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) really needs no introduction, does she? She's the fictional expert on love and relationships. So what do you say as a toast to the greatest love of her life ? Take cues from BFF Samantha:

Finding sample toast wedding movies could help you come up with some of the best lines to use at your buddy’s weddings or even bachelor’s eve or bridal showers.

Some of the best wedding toast images can be found in prime romantic comedies that we can never forget. Quick Navigation

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called a wedding toast.

The wedding toast came about back in the day when neighbors would call a truce after a disagreement and hold a celebration when their children came together in marriage. The act of dipping burnt bread into wine by the Romans at the time, coined the term, ‘toast’.

Wedding Movies Quotes

It could be a bit difficult, writing your wedding toast for your bestie’s wedding. However, it might be hard to beat the difficulty faced by the maid of honor in the Bridesmaids movie. If Annie could come up with the wedding date toast after so much disaster, well so can you.

“Lillian and I took Spanish together in school. And so, I would just like to say to you and to everyone here, ‘Gracias para vivaren la casa, en la escuelas, en… en la azul… markada. Tienes con bibiren las fortuashla and gracias.”

Wedding Crashers

The Wedding Crashers toast is what seals the deal for John and Claire, John being the wedding crasher and Claire being an actual guest at the wedding. All goes to say that even when there are weird things afoot, you might still be able to come up with sensible wedding toast song ideas.

“True love is the soul’s recognition of its counterpoint in another.”

Four Weddings and A Funeral

One of the best toast wedding films would be the one from Charles the best man (played by Hugh Grant), in a movie where he keeps running into the same lady, Carrie at weddings and even one funeral.

“I am as ever in bewildered awe of anyone who this kind of commitment that Angus and Laure have made today. I know I couldn’t do it and I think it’s wonderful they can.”

In Her Shoes

Some touching toast quotes can be found in poems, just like this one from E.E. Cummings, recited by Cameron Diaz, when she played the character of Maggie and gave a great wedding toast to her sister, Rose.

“It is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart. I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart.”

My Best Friend’s Wedding

Toast samples are a great way to find inspiration for writing your own. Movies sometimes can draw the best of inspiration or sometimes the worst, as we can see from the old-school wedding toast by Julia Roberts’ character in “My Best Friend’s Wedding”.

“I had the strangest dream. I dreamed that some psychopath was trying to break the two of you up. Luckily, I woke up, and I see that the world is just as it should be. For my best friend… has won the best woman.”

The 5-Year Engagement

Some people have wedding toast clipart, kind of like the engagement party slideshow Tom and Violet had, which was pretty awkward for the couple. Also, the wedding toast that they got afterward.

“This is supposed to be exciting. It’s your wedding — you only get a few of these!”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

If you’re looking for the craziest toast wedding films collective; then perhaps this one from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” takes the cake. Considering the types of families that were coming together in this movie, it is no surprise that they had this gem of a toast below.

“We’re all different, but in the end, we’re all fruit.”

The Wedding Singer

movie-wedding-toast-hand-unsplash

The wedding singer toast is not one to live by, but definitely, a memorable one that could be helpful in a perhaps queer way. If you have an SNL wedding toast skit in mind, this line from the drunk brother of the groom in the movie could inspire you.

“Harold ain’t so perfect. Remember that time in Puerto Rico when we picked up those two… well, I guess they were prostitutes, but I don’t remember paying.”

The Princess Bride

This quote from the 1987 movie is one for the couple who believes in the fairy tale ending. And who wouldn’t want to believe in happily ever afters?

“Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.”

No wedding toast could best capture the love of two people who met on vacation and both share a love for travel. We bring you this cute and romantic quote from the 1958 movie, Vertigo.

“Only one is a wanderer; two together are always going somewhere.”

If a maid of honor would like to give a wedding toast from movies in honor of her movie-loving bestie, then there are so many to choose from. Often from popular romcoms, a few include:

  • Lidia Biondi, “Letters to Juliet” “Husbands are like wine. They take a long time to mature.”
  • Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” Really quick! Speaking of Consuelo, Lillian and I took Spanish together in school. And so, I would just like to say to you and to everyone here, ‘Gracias para vivar en la casa, en la escuelas, en…en la azul…markada. Tienes con bibir en las Fortuashla.’ And gracias!

Even a best man could run out of the right words to say. Wedding toast quotes from movies could be the savior that we all need at times like this. For some humor, you could go with quotes from family comedy series we have all grown to love.

  • Josh Radnor, “How I Met Your Mother” The love between Joel and Mora is magnificent. I thought I had the same thing… until my fiancee left me at the altar last week. I was asked not to talk about that, so I won’t. (pause) I sit outside her house at night sometimes.

Sometimes movies have the best and most funny wedding toast quotes. Just the right places to dig up those perfect words.

  • A Star Is Born (2018) – For the couple who belong together. “You float out at sea then one day you find a port say, ‘I’m gonna stay here a few days.’ Few days ‘comes a few years. Then you forgot where you’re going in the first place. Then you realize you don’t really give a sh*t about where you was going, cause you like where you at.”
  • The Fault In Our Stars (2014) – For the nerdy couple. For the couple that’s a little math: “I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.”
  • Crazy, Stupid Love (2011) – For the couple who will do anything to be together. “I will never stop trying. Because when you find the one… you never give up.
  • “Sex And The City (The Movie)” – For the couple who took their time . Now, there were times when we had our doubts about this gorgeous man. But after careful observation over the last hundred years, my doubts are over. So here’s to the groom… a man who finally got ‘Carrie-d’ away.
  • Juno (2007) – Toast wedding movies for the couple that started as besties. “Look, in my opinion, the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you. The right person is still going to think the sun shines out of your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with.”

Speaking about your friend in front of a number of people can be a tad more difficult than a simple face-to-face. This is why writing wedding toasts can be difficult; sometimes sample toast wedding movies can help give you the spark to write your own. From funny to romantic and downright silly, here’s to hoping that these wedding movie toasts deliver what you desire.

#1 Atonement

“Dearest Cecilia, the story can resume. The one I had been planning on that evening walk. I can become again the man who once crossed the surrey park at dusk, in my best suit, swaggering on the promise of life. The man who, with the clarity of passion, made love to you in the library. The story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame.” — Robbie

#2 Marriage Story (Nicole)

“What I love about Nicole… She makes people feel comfortable about even embarrassing things. She really listens when someone is talking… She always knows the right thing to do when it comes to difficult family shit. I get stuck in my ways and she knows when to push me and when to leave me alone.

She’s always inexplicably brewing a cup of tea that she doesn’t drink. And it’s not easy for her to put away a sock, or close a cabinet, or do a dish, but she tries for me. Nicole grew up in LA around actors and directors and movies and TV and is very close to her mother, Sandra, and, Cassie, her sister. Nicole gives great presents.

She is a mother who plays — really plays — she never steps off playing or says it’s too much (and it must be too much some of the time). She’s competitive. She’s a great dancer. Infectious. She makes me wish I could dance. She always says when she doesn’t know something or hasn’t read a book or seen a film or a play (whereas I fake it or say something like, “I haven’t seen it in a while.”). She keeps the fridge over-full. No one is ever hungry in our house. She can drive a stick.

She’s amazing at opening jars because of her strong arms, which I’ve always found very sexy. She’s brave. After that movie, All Over The Girl , she could have stayed in LA and been a movie star, but she gave that up to do theater with me in New York. My crazy ideas are her favorite things to figure out how to execute. She’s my favorite actress.” –Charlie

#3 Marriage Story (Charlie)

“What I love about Charlie… Charlie is undaunted. He never lets other people’s opinions or any set-backs keep him from what he wants to do. Charlie eats like he’s trying to get it over with and like there won’t be enough food for everyone. A sandwich is to be strangled while devoured. But he’s incredibly neat and I rely on him to keep things in order. He’s energy conscious. He doesn’t look in the mirror too often.

He cries easily in movies. He is very self-sufficient — he can darn a sock and cook himself dinner and iron a shirt. He rarely gets defeated (which I feel like I always do). Charlie takes all of my moods steadily, he doesn’t give in to them or make me feel bad about them.

He’s a great dresser, he never looks embarrassing which is hard for a man. He’s very competitive. He loves being a dad, he loves all the things you’re supposed to hate, like the tantrums, the waking up at night. It’s almost annoying how much he likes it, but then it’s mostly nice.

He disappears into his own world. He and Henry are alike in that way. He can tell people they have food in their teeth or on their face in a way that doesn’t make them feel bad.

Charlie is self-made — his parents — I only met them once — but he told me there was a lot of alcohol and some violence in his childhood. He moved to New York from Indiana with no safety net and now he’s more a New Yorker than any New Yorker.

He’s brilliant at creating family out of whoever is around. With the theatre company he cast a spell that made everyone feel included. No one, not even an intern was unimportant. He could remember all the inside jokes.” –Nicole

#4 A Star is Born

“If you don’t dig deep into your fucking soul, you won’t have legs. … All you got is you and what you want to say to people, and they are listening right now and they’re not going to be listening forever, trust me. So you gotta grab it, and you don’t apologize, you don’t worry about why they’re listening or how long they’re going to be listening for—you just tell them what you want to say. ’Cause how you say it is the stuff of angels.” —Jackson Maine

#5 An Excerpt from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

A 2001 movie starring Nicolas Cage and Penelope Crus and a 1994 novel by Louis de Bernières

Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.

Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, It is not excitement, It is not the promulgation of eternal passion. That is just being “in love” which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, And this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each other underground, And when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, They find that they are one tree and not two.

#6 Shakespeare in Love

“I will have poetry in my life. And adventure. And love. Love above all. No… not the artful postures of love, not playful and poetical games of love for the amusement of an evening. but love that…overthrows life. Unbiddable, ungovernable, like a riot in the heart, and nothing to be done, come ruin or rapture.” — Viola

#7 10 Things I Hate About You

“I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate it, I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie.

I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.” — Kat

#8 While You Were Sleeping

“I bet you were wondering what I’m doing here in the middle of the night. Well, I thought I should introduce myself. My name is Lucy. Lucy Elenore Moderatz. I think you should know that your family thinks we’re engaged. I’ve never been engaged before. This is very sudden for me. What I really came here to tell was that I didn’t mean for this to happen. I don’t know what to do.

If you were awake, I wouldn’t be in this mess. Oh God, not that I’m blaming you. I’m sorry. It’s just that when I was a kid, I always imagined what I would be like or what I would have when I got older. And you know, it was normal stuff. I’d have a house and a family and things like that. It’s not that I’m complaining or anything, because I do have a cat. I have an apartment. I have a sole possession of a remote control. That’s very important. It’s just that I’ve never met anybody that I could laugh with.

Do you believe in love at first site? I bet you don’t. You’re probably too sensible for that. Or have you ever seen somebody and you know, that if that person really knew you, they’d dump the perfect model that they were with and realize that you were the one that they wanted to grow old with? Have you ever fallen in love with somebody that you haven’t even talked to? Have you ever been so alone that you spend the night confusing a man in a coma?” –Lucy Eleanor Moderatz

“In my opinion the best thing you can do is find a person who loves you for exactly what you are. Good mood, bad mood, ugly, pretty, handsome, what have you, the right person will still think the sun shines out of your ass. That’s the kind of person that’s worth sticking with.” — Mac

#10 Sleepless in Seattle (Suzy’s Monologue)

“Oh, it’s like that movie. An Affair to Remember , did you ever see it? Oh, god, Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. Is it Karr or Kerr? Okay, she’s going to meet him at the top of the Empire State Building, only she got hit by a taxi. And he waited and waited, and it was raining, I think. And then she’s too proud to tell him that she’s, uh, crippled. And he’s too proud to find out why she doesn’t come. But he comes to see her anyway, I forget why, but oh, oh, it’s so great when he comes to see her, because he doesn’t even notice that she doesn’t get up to say hello. And he’s very bitter and you think that he’s just going to walk out the door and never know why she’s just lying there, you know, with, on the couch, with the blanket over her shriveled legs and suddenly he goes, sold the painting and he, like, goes to the bedroom, and he looks, and he comes out, and he looks at her, and he kind-of, just, they know, and the hug and it’s so, god, I love that movie.” –Suzy

#11 Muriel’s Wedding

“When I lived in Porpoise Spit, I used to sit in my room for hours and listen to ABBA songs. But since I’ve met you and moved to Sydney, I haven’t listened to one Abba song. That’s because my life is as good as an Abba song. It’s as good as Dancing Queen.” –Muriel Heslop

#12 Down with Love

“But saying ‘I love you’ was also my plan. I just wanted to tell you the truth so that when you heard me say, ‘I love you’ you would know that I knew who you were, and you would know who I was. Then you, the great Catcher Block, would know that you’d been beaten at your own game by me, Nancy Brown, your former secretary. And I would have, once and for all, set myself apart from all the other girls you’ve known. All those other girls that you never really cared about, by making myself someone like the one person you really love and admire above all others: you! Then, when you realized that you had finally met your match, I would have, at last, gained the respect that would make you wanna marry me first and seduce me later. I just wanted you to hear all this from me before you heard it from your private eye.” –Barbara Novak

#13 You’ve Got Mail

“Dear Friend, I like to start my notes to you as if we’re already in the middle of a conversation. I pretend that we’re the oldest and dearest friends, as opposed to what we actually are, people who don’t know each other’s names and met in a chat room where we both claimed we’d never been before. What will NY152 say today I wonder. I turn on my computer, I wait impatiently as it connects. I go on-line and my breath catches in my chest until I hear three little words: You’ve got mail. I hear nothing, not even a sound on the streets of New York, just the beat of my own heart. I have mail. From you.” –Kathleen Kelly

#14 The Fault in Our Stars

“I am in love with you. And I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed, and that one day all of our labors will be returned to dust. And I know that the sun will swallow the only Earth we will ever have. And I am in love with you.” — Gus

#15 Along Came Polly

“Since we have been together I have felt more uncomfortable, out of place, embarrassed, and just physically sick than I have in my entire life. But I could not have gone through that, I could not have thrown up 19 times in 48 days if I was not in love with you.” — Reuben

#16 Stardust

“You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn’t true. I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and…

What I’m trying to say, Tristan is… I think I love you. Is this love? I never imagined I’d know it for myself. My heart… It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it’s trying to escape because it doesn’t belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I’d wish for nothing in exchange – no fits. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.” — Yvaine

#17 Spiderman

“The great thing about MJ is… when you look in her eyes and she’s looking back in yours… everything… feels… not quite normal. Because you feel stronger and weaker at the same time. You feel excited and at the same time, terrified. The truth is… you don’t know what you feel except you know what kind of man you want to be. It’s as if you’ve reached the unreachable and you weren’t ready for it.” – Peter Parker

#18 The Time Traveler’s Wife

“I want to tell you, again, I love you. Our love has been the thread through the labyrinth, the net under the high-wire walker, the only real thing in this strange life of mine that I could ever trust. Tonight I feel that my love for you has more density in this world than I do, myself: as though it could linger on after me and surround you, keep you, hold you.” —Audrey Niffenegger

#19 The Perks of Being a Wallflower

“I don’t know if I will have the time to write any more letters because I might be too busy trying to participate. So, if this does end up being the last letter, I just want you to know that I was in a bad place before I started high school. And you helped me. Even if you didn’t know what I was talking about. Or know someone who’s gone through it. It made me not feel alone. Because I know there are people who say all of these things don’t happen. And there are people who forget what it’s like to be 16 when they turn 17. I know these will all be stories someday. And our pictures will become old photographs. And we’ll all become somebody’s mom or dad. But right now, these moments are not stories. This is happening. I am here. And I am looking at her. And she is so beautiful. I can see it. This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story. You are alive. And as you stand up and see the lights on buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And you are listening to that song on that drive with the people you love most in this world. And in this moment, I swear… … we are infinite.” –Charlie Kelmeckis

#20 Serendipity

“I’ve always believed in fate. I’ve always believed that life is more than a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences. But rather, a tapestry of events that culminate into an exquisite plan. I mean, I just spent the entire flight staring into the sky thinking. Not about my fiancé, but about this mystery guy I met a million and a half hours ago. A guy I don’t even remember except for this vague picture inside my head. It’s just a few seconds, a fragment really, and it’s like, in that moment the whole universe existed just to bring us together.

We spent only a few precious hours together and I never even gave him my last name or my phone number. Instead, I told him that if we were meant to be together, if fate meant for us to be together, we’d meet again someday. That’s why I’m here. That’s why I’m going to let fate take me anywhere it wants to go, because when all of this is over, at least I’ll never have to think of him ever again. Let’s just pray he’s a bald Fascist who picks his nose and wipes it under the car seat.” –Sara Thomas

#21 The Wedding Singer

“I want to make you smile whenever you’re sad Carry you around when your arthritis is bad All I want to do is grow old with you I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches Build you a fire if the furnace breaks Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you I’ll miss you Kiss you Give you my coat when you are cold Need you Feed you Even let you hold the remote control So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink Put you to bed if you’ve had too much to drink I could be the man who grows old with you I want to grow old with you.” —Robbie

#22 Runaway Bride

“I guarantee that we’ll have tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me.” —Ike

“I don’t believe in marriage. I think at worst it’s a hostile political act, a way for small-minded men to keep women in the house and out of the way, wrapped up in the guise of traditional and conservative religious nonsense. At best, it’s a happy delusion — these two people who truly love each other and have no idea how truly miserable they’re about to make each other. But, but, when two people know that, and they decide with eyes wide open to face each other and get married anyway, then I don’t think it’s conservative or delusional. I think it’s radical, and courageous, and very romantic.”

#24 The Notebook

“Poets often describe love as an emotion that we can’t control, one that overwhelms logic and common sense. That’s what it was like for me. I didn’t plan on falling in love with you, and I doubt if you planned on falling in love with me.

But once we met, it was clear that neither of us could control what was happening to us. We fell in love, despite our differences, and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created. For me, love like that has happened only once, and that’s why every minute we spent together has been seared in my memory.” —Noah

#25 The Amber Spyglass

A 2000 book by Philip Pullman and recent movie series His Dark Materials

“I’ll be looking for you, Will, every moment, every single moment. And when we do find each other again, we’ll cling together so tight that nothing and no one’ll ever tear us apart. Every atom of me and every atom of you…We’ll live in birds and flowers and dragonflies and pin trees and in clouds and in those little specks of light you see floating in sunbeams…And when they use our atoms to make new lives, they won’t just be able to take one, they’ll have to take two, one of you and one of me, we’ll be joined so tight…”

They lay side by side, hand in hand, looking at the sky.”

#26 Up in the Air

“You know, honestly by the time you’re 34, all the physical requirements just go out the window. You secretly pray that he’ll be taller than you, not an asshole would be nice just someone who enjoys my company, comes from a good family. You don’t think about that when you’re younger. Someone who wants kids, likes kids. Healthy enough to play with his kids. Please let him earn more money than I do, you might not understand that now but believe me, you will one day otherwise that’s a recipe for disaster. And hopefully, some hair on his head. I mean, that’s not even a deal breaker these days. A nice smile. Yea, a nice smile just might do it.” –Alex Goran

#27 Romeo and Juliet

“O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet. ‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What’s in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee Take all myself.”

#28 Wuthering Heights

“I don’t think I belong in Heaven, Ellen. I dreamt once I was there. I dreamt I’m in Heaven and that Heaven didn’t seem to be my home. And I broke my heart with weeping to come back to Earth and the angels were so angry they flung me out in the middle of the heath on top of Wuthering Heights. And I woke up sobbing with joy. That’s it Ellen. I have no more business marrying Edgar Linton that I have of being in Heaven. But Ellen, Ellen, what can I do? … Who else? He sunk so low. He seems to take pleasure in being mean and brutal. And yet, he’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same. And Linton’s is as different as frost from fire. I once thought of living as Heathcliff. Ellen, I AM Heathcliff.” –Catherine Earnshaw Linton

#29 Bull Durham (“The Church of Baseball” Monologue)

” believe in the church of baseball. I’ve tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there’s one hundred and eight beads in a Catholic rosary and there’s one hundred and eight stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn’t work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology.

You see, there’s no guilt in baseball, and it’s never boring, which makes it like sex. There’s never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn’t have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball. You just got to relax and concentrate. Besides, I’d never sleep with a player hitting under .250. Not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle. You see, there’s a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I get a ballplayer alone, I’ll just read Emily Dickenson or Walt Whitman to him. And the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. Of course, a guy will listen to anything if he thinks it’s foreplay.

I make them feel confident and they make me feel safe and pretty. ‘Course what I give them lasts a lifetime. What they give me lasts a hundred and forty two games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball. Who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for God’s sake! It’s a long season, and you got to trust it. I’ve tried them all, I really have. And the only church that feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the church of baseball.” –Annie Savoy

#30 Breaking the Waves

“Bess McNeill, for many years you’ve prayed for love, should I take it away from you again, is that what you want? No, no. I’m still grateful for love. What do you want then? I pray for Jan to come home. He will be coming home in ten days. You must learn to endure, you know that! I can’t wait. This is unlike you, Bess. Out there there are people who need Jan and his work. What about them? They don’t matter. Nothing else matters. I just want Jan home again. I pray to you, oh please, won’t you send him home? Are you sure that’s what you want? Yes.”

best wedding speeches movies

When it comes to unforgettable wedding speeches in movies, audiences have been treated to a plethora of memorable moments that range from heartfelt to hilariously candid. Here is a list of the 10 best wedding speeches from films that not only captured the essence of the characters but also left a lasting impression on moviegoers:

1.’My Best Friend’s Wedding’ (1997) – George’s Speech:

George breaks into “I Say a Little Prayer” at the dinner, unexpectedly creating one of the most delightful and sing-along moments in rom-com history.

2.’The Wedding Singer’ (1998) – Robbie’s Song:

Although not a speech by the traditional definition, Robbie Hart’s impromptu performance of “Grow Old With You” on the airplane is as honest and touching as any formal wedding toast.

3.’Bridesmaids’ (2011) – Annie and Helen’s Toasts:

Competitive speeches by best friends Annie and Helen hilariously one-up each other, showcasing the film’s blend of comedy and sentimentality.

4.’Four Weddings and a Funeral’ (1994) – Charles’s Stuttering Speech:

In this British classic, Charles delivers an awkward but charming speech that exemplifies his character’s endearing personality.

5.’Wedding Crashers’ (2005) – John’s Pitch-Perfect Toasts:

John, an experienced wedding crasher, gives flawless toasts that are both comedic showcases for audiences and love letters to the art of crashing.

6.’Love Actually’ (2003) – Mark’s Video Montage:

Though technically without words, Mark’s silent wedding video for Juliet speaks volumes about his hidden love in one of cinema’s most bittersweet reveals.

7.’Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018) – Oliver’s Witty Commentary:

Oliver T’sien provides a colorful and animated short speech that delivers both wit and insight into the unfolding lavish wedding festivities.

8.’Sweet Home Alabama’ (2002) – Jake’s Confession:

In a moment of true love revealed, Jake interrupts what could have been his divorce to profess his enduring love in an impromptu but heartfelt speech.

9.‘The Princess Bride’ (1987) – Impressive Clergyman’s Words:

Though meant to be serious, the clergyman’s comically serious “Mawage” speech has become iconic for its humorous take on wedding vows.

10.‘Steel Magnolias’ (1989) – Drum & Annelle’s Reception:

A sentimental gathering highlights southern charm as Drum recounts touching stories during his daughter’s reception.

These scenes stand out for their ability to blend humor, warmth, pathos, and sometimes sheer romance into a few minutes that encapsulate much larger stories within their respective films. Whether they’re played for laughs or tears, these speeches are integral parts of the movies they’re found in and have earned their places in cinematic history as some of the best wedding-related scenes ever written.

A Wedding Movie Mash-up Ceremony Script

From My Big Fat Greek Wedding

The groom, the groomsmen, and the minister stand waiting near the altar as the processional walk begins. 3 flower girls lead the way, followed by 3 young ring bearers, and 10 bridesmaids carrying bouquets. The father of the bride escorts the bride, arm in arm, to the start of the aisle. Guests stand to watch, and the wedding march begins to play…

At the end of the aisle, the father lifts the veil and kisses the bride’s cheeks before stepping to the side. The groom steps forward, takes her hands, and kisses them.

‘End of Aisle Question’

From Meet the Fockers

Officiant:  "And who gives this woman to this man?"

Father of the bride:  "I do… (brief struggle) ...She’s all yours now."

Officiant:  "Shalom , everyone! Ma nishma , which is Hebrew for ‘What’s going on?”

From Father of the Bride

Officiant:  “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here together in the presence of family, friends, and loved ones, for the purpose of uniting in matrimony ---” ( Steve Martin interrupts, of course... )

Invocation (take two)

From Friends

Officiant (Joey!) :  “Dearly beloved, I’m sorry I’m a little late… Well, let’s get started before the groom takes off again, eh? We’re gathered here today to join this man, and this woman, in the bonds of holy matrimony. I’ve known (Monica and Chandler) for a long time, and I cannot imagine two people more perfect for each other.

And now, as I’ve left my notes in my dressing room, we shall proceed to the vows.”

Exchange of Vows

First set of vows.

From When Harry Met Sally , Harry’s speech to Sally

Partner One:

“I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night.

And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Second Set of Vows

From The Best Man , Mia’s Vows to Lance

Partner Two:

“(Lance), my friend, my love, my hero. Loving you is my heart’s joy. It teaches me to be faithful to my personal truths. As I stand beside you this day, I offer you the very heart of me, filled with sacred love. Pure, unconditional, and everlasting. For love bears all things, endures all things, and believes all things. Love never fails, and I do love you, (Lance). Mind, body, and soul.”

Ring Exchange

Call and response from Officiant to each partner:  “With this ring, as a token of love and affection, I thee wed.”

Pronouncement

From Love Actually , Peter and Juliet’s Wedding Ceremony

“(Peter and Juliet) have given their consent and made their marriage vows to each other. They have declared their marriage by the giving and receiving of rings.

I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife.”

(After the ceremony...)

Reception Wedding Speech

From The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1 , Edward’s wedding speech

Partner One to guests:

“It's an extraordinary thing to meet someone who you can bare your soul to and accept you for what you are. I've been waiting, for what seems like a very long time, to get beyond what I am.

With (Bella) I feel like I can finally begin. So I'd like to propose a toast to my beautiful bride. No measure of time with you will be long enough. But let's start with forever.”

And scene!

Wedding Speech Inspo: Best Wedding Toasts from Movies

Writing the perfect wedding speech is  challenging.  You need to think of something that sounds natural, funny, touching, and memorable. While you want it to tell a story, it shouldn’t be too long. And you need to connect with the guests of the lovely couple. Juggling all of this leads to draft after draft of potential speeches as you work on making them perfect. If you need some wedding speech inspo, check out the best wedding toasts from movies to see what these characters do.

Westley: The Princess Bride

This movie has a few adorable quotes, and we advise you to check out Westley’s simple speech in The Princess Bride if you want to make yours quick yet awe worthy. He points out that the couple found true love, and that’s uncommon. While many couples can be in love, that doesn’t mean they’re soulmates.

While your speech shouldn’t be this short, a line or two about the love between the bride and groom is touching. Think up something original or say, “Westley from The Princess Bride put it best,” and quote him.

Jules: My Best Friend’s Wedding

Jules uses her speech to apologize to her best friend for the things she did wrong—specifically, trying to break the couple up. While we don’t suggest you follow in  all  of Jules’s footsteps, you should think of a heartfelt speech. Maybe the bride did something special for you years ago, and you want to highlight it to tell everyone how loyal she’ll be to her groom.

Claire: Wedding Crashers

“Wooow,”  this speech was touching thanks to a bit of advice from a certain wedding crasher. Initially, Claire planned to pack her toast with jokes and a bit of teasing, but as a wedding expert, John suggested going another route. The result? Everyone  loved  Claire’s touching speech about her sister.

John put it best: some teasing is fine, but the best speech comes from the heart. So as you write your toast, think about the sweetest moments you remember between the lovely couple and jot them down. Wedding Crashers isn’t just a  top wedding movie to watch because it’s hilarious but also because the characters are relatable.

Charles: Four Weddings and a Funeral

Charles begins his speech with a bit of reality and dry humor. He talks about the lovely commitment between the couple and points out that it’s something everyone  can’t  do, specifically himself. And it’s true. Marriage is difficult; it comes with difficulties, but perseverance is key. Talk about that incredible leap of faith as they begin their life together.

Maggie: In Her Shoes

Often, the bride’s sister gives a heartfelt speech about her sibling and maybe even tell a story about their childhood. Maggie surprises her sister Rose with a speech at the ceremony where she reads “I Carry Your Heart with Me” by E.E. Cummings.

This one tugs at the heartstrings, and it’s one everyone in the audience can relate to. Everyone at the wedding loves the couple and wants the best for them; similarly, the bride and groom will always carry one another in their hearts.

Gus: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Even the bride’s father needs a bit of wedding speech inspo, and Gus givesone of the best wedding toasts from movies. While he was initially upset about Toula’s husband Ian coming from a different background, he learns to accept this because Ian makes Toula happy. He explains that people are like fruit, and we’re all varying types. In other words, we’re the same yet different. We all come from different walks of life, and forming a family allows us to blend the things that make us unique to create something new.

Tips for Giving a Wedding Speech

Giving a speech is nerve-racking for nearly everyone—you’re not alone in feeling this. As you prepare your toast, follow in the footsteps of these characters, and aim to:

  • Introduce yourself and your relationship to the couple
  • Keep it personal and unique
  • Tell stories about the couple
  • Crack a few jokes
  • Don’t make it too long

The best speeches require planning, so start writing early so you have time to make changes and practice. Then, if you have doubts, do a trial run with a friend, your partner, or a member of the wedding party. Sometimes, we need a little nudge in the right direction to create a one-of-a-kind speech that’ll make everyone tear up. Best of luck writing!

Make ‘em cry and you’ve given a great wedding toast!

A group of people toasting champagne glasses at a wedding in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The best wedding toasts make your audience laugh and cry. Here’s the rub: it’s harder to make people laugh than cry. Not everything is funny. So Owen Wilson’s advice to Rachel McAdams in “The Wedding Crashers” (below) is spot-on: speak from the heart, make e’m cry, and your wedding toast will be a winner. Let’s explore some great movie wedding toasts for more toasting wisdom.

The Rachel McAdams character tried to be funny in the clip above, but her jokes fell about as flat as a Kansas plain from a scene in The Wizard of Oz.

McAdams regained the momentum when she turned tender, borrowing Wilson’s slick line:

“Someone once told me that true love is the soul’s recognizing of its counterpoint in another.”

In the scene above, Hugh Grant tries humor with great initial success, but takes it a step too far before making certain audience members uncomfortable. Like McAdams, he regains his footing with this line:

“I am, as ever, in bewildered awe of anyone who makes this kind of commitment that Angus and Laura have made today.”

You’ll never go wrong with tenderness.

Adam Sandler does just that in a classic scene form The Wedding Singer with this line:

“I think we all know that when you fall in love, the emptiness kind of drifts away because you find something to live for, each other.”

Again, it’s easier to connect with your audience with tenderness.

However, sometimes, humor and tenderness unite to create a memorable toast, such as the dad’s toast from the epic film, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

This movie wedding toast is very funny, and yet it tugs at the heart. Well done.

One of the best movie toasts ever comes in the movie, “About Time.”   British actor, Bill Nighy, delivers this dry, tender toast in 67 seconds, but you’ll never forget it:

Make note that a toast does not have to be long to be brilliant. In fact, just the opposite.

Let these classic movie wedding toasts inspire you next time you’re giving a toast.

And when the toasting is over, it’s time for the dancing.   That’s where we come in.   For packed dance floors at your wedding celebration, simply start a conversation with us. It’s easy: 513-678-2107 .

27 Of The Greatest Movie Wedding Scenes Of All Time

"I firmly believe that anyone who doesn't cry during that scene is heartless."

Morgan Sloss

BuzzFeed Staff

We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community for their favorite wedding scenes from movies, and they did not disappoint! Here are some of the most magical wedding moments:

1. colin and araminta's wedding in crazy rich asians.

Araminta walking down a floral aisle in an extravagant wedding dress

"I firmly believe that anyone who doesn't cry during that scene is heartless. A grown man next to me in the theater cried as much as I did. The cover of 'Can't Help Falling in Love' playing while the bridal party walks out is perfect. Then it gets even better when the music stops, and the water flows down the aisle, and the bride starts walking down in the water. It's gorgeous."

— ravenstone

"Araminta's wedding was STUNNING. I've been married for almost 14 years, and that wedding gave me #weddinggoals. Most important though was watching Rachel and Nick gazing at each other with that beautiful music in the background. Ermergerd."

2. Bella and Edward's wedding in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1

Bella and Edward beneath a floral arch

"Their wedding is truly one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. The decorations, the lighting, the music, and especially the dress! I love watching that movie specifically for that scene. And the reception afterward is just as beautiful. Edward's speech gets me every time."

— maverickchiefeditor

3. Ariel and Eric's wedding in The Little Mermaid

"Ariel's wedding at the end always got me as a kid. I was always jealous of her dress, but the best part was when she finally made amends with her father and hugged him goodbye."

— colleend9

4. Kimmy and Michael's wedding in My Best Friend's Wedding

Kimmy and Michael walking away from Jules

"I love the toast Julia Roberts gives at the reception and how she 'loans' them their song afterward. Really, I love the whole wedding scene, seeing them leave happily together, that she doesn’t get the guy, seeing George show up for her... but her speech gets me every time. And before someone starts — yes, I know she acted like a nutcase and probably wouldn’t still be the maid of honor, but it will always be one of my favorite movies!"

— bfranks87

5. Juliet and Peter's wedding in Love Actually

Juliet and Peter smiling in their wedding clothes

"First of all, Keira Knightley has such a fantastic entrance, walking into focus as she walks down the aisle. Then there's the whole musical surprise after the ceremony, with their friends popping up in the pews to play along. It’s such a joyful moment."

6. Toula and Ian's wedding in My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Toula and Ian running out of the church and holding hands

"Mr. Portokalos's speech about how Ian isn't so different after all and his big wedding gift are so heartwarming."

— books_baking_broadway

7. Will and Elizabeth's wedding in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

"I know this is an unconventional wedding, but no other wedding scenes tug at my heart strings more than Elizabeth and Will’s. The music, the emotion, UGH MY HEART. It’s chaos all around, but to them, it’s just about them and how much they love each other."

— genevieveg496e5348b

8. Jane and Kevin's wedding in 27 Dresses

"Jane looked beautiful, and the monologue about how it was her turn and how she didn't have to be asked to hold something was beautiful. Then she said that the only thing that mattered was who was waiting for her at the end of the aisle, and Kevin looked up. It makes me swoon every time."

Britain has been part of a lot of wars throughout history, most of which were in the name of expanding the kingdom to all regions of the world, which is not exactly a noble crusade by today's standards. Still, this wasn't always the case, and in the instances of the World Wars, the UK entered more as a response to rising tensions in Europe or direct declarations of war from other countries.

Regardless of the purposes of the story behind and the nature of these wars, there are lots of stories to tell when it comes to Britain's involvement in them. There are many centuries to explore and many heroic tales to tell, with cinema becoming a perfect medium to do it. The best British war films are often seen as some of the greatest of all time , not just in the war genre but in all of movie history, period. From seminal, game-changing classics like Lawrence of Arabia to newer hits like Dunkirk , these movies are crucial entries into the war genre.

10 'The Imitation Game' (2014)

Conflict: world war ii (1939-1945).

Alan Turing in front of his machine in The Imitation Game

The Imitation Game follows Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing , an English mathematician and scientist known as the grandfather of modern computing technology. During World War II, the Germans sent encrypted messages to each other. Though intercepted, allied forces could not decrypt these messages unless they knew the cipher. Thus, Turing was commissioned by Parliament to help decrypt the messages, which he did by creating a large machine that proved instrumental to the war effort.

However, this biopic doesn't focus only on the war effort but also on Turing's life as a homosexual man at a time when homosexuality was a criminal offense. So, even though he should have been seen as a national hero, Turing found himself ostracized from society, ending his life as a martyr. The Imitation Game is more of a drama rather than an action flick, but it is every bit as motivational and eye-opening as other war movies out there .

9 '1917' (2019)

Conflict: world war i (1914-1918).

Lance Corporal William "Will" Schofield, looking stunned and being held back by other soldiers in a trench in 1917

1917 takes audiences to the Western Front of World War I , where two field runners are given orders from a high-ranking officer to deliver a message to another company somewhere else on the front. The orders are imperative, advising the company to halt their attack because the Germans are going to lure them into a trap. The film is uniquely presented in a one-shot format, with several cleverly disguised edits to make it seem like it has zero jump cuts, allowing audiences to not miss a single second of the protagonist's journey.

This choice makes his mission feel much more time-sensitive, as each obstacle the runners encounter feels like yet another thing holding them back from delivering the crucial message. 1917 comes as a real nail-biter in the war movie genre, and though it isn't the most visceral or graphic movie out there, it succeeds in putting audiences into the shoes of the average soldier , who has been thrust into a conflict unlike anything the world had seen before.

8 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' (1957)

Two shirtless men looking intently ahead in The Bridge on the River Kwai

Most World War II movies tend to explore the Western Front or the Pacific Theatre, so it's refreshing that The Bridge on the River Kwai decides to explore the war's influence in Indochina. Based on the 1952 novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle , the plot centers on a group of British and American prisoners of war who are forced by the Japanese occupiers to construct a bridge over the eponymous river between Bangkok, Thailand, and Yangon in present-day Myanmar.

Taking a deep dive into the cruelties inflicted by the Japanese Empire upon prisoners of war, The Bridge on the River Kwai won seven out of its eight Oscar nominations . This acclaimed picture is among the best from legendary director David Lean with expert storytelling about a lesser-known part of the war and a lesser-known problem. The Bridge on the River Kwai perfectly embodies the camaraderie that existed between Allied nations , despite their differences, as they teamed up against a common evil for the good of the entire world.

7 'dunkirk' (2017).

Tommy crawling on a beach surrounded by smoke and other soldiers in Dunkirk

Dunkirk takes place during the early phases of World War II, after the French surrender to the Nazis, leaving hundreds of British soldiers stranded on the northern coast of the besieged nation. As backup prepares to evacuate them, they find themselves in a race against time, as the Third Reich is not far behind.

The expertly crafted soundtrack perfectly reflects the urgency and desperation, utilizing a ticking clock sound effect that really helps in showing the vise closing around the stranded troops. Though Dunkirk is a superb movie, it should really only be watched once , especially for those prone to anxiety, as it is so nerve-wracking that it can sometimes be difficult to stomach. Still, Dunkirk is a modern masterpiece of film , coming from renowned director Christopher Nolan , who effectively transports viewers back in time to Britain's darkest hours.

6 'The King's Speech' (2010)

King George the VI, standing seriously with Queen Elizabeth behind him in The King's Speech

The King's Speech is another biopic, this time about King George VI , played by Colin Firth . In 1939, the Crown officially declared war on the rising Third Reich, and the newly appointed King George had to prepare to address the people announcing this decision. The only problem was that King George had a stutter, which was embarrassing to him. Knowing the nation needed his firm and reassuring words, he hired an Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue ( Geoffrey Rush ), to help him overcome his stammer and make his address.

This speech became one of the most famous ever broadcast over the radio, and the King delivered it without stuttering even once. The movie brings the King to light in a whole new way, portraying him as more than just a royal but as a human being like anyone else. Both Rush and Firth bring electrifying performances to their roles , turning King George and Logue into inspirational and sympathetic figures. Though they may not have actually fought in the war, they were key figures in rallying the nation behind one common cause.

5 'barry lyndon' (1975), conflict: seven years' war (1756-1763).

Barry Lyndon surrendering in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon

Barry Lyndon isn't the most popular film that the well-respected Stanley Kubrick made, but it is just as good as his other projects. The film is split into two parts, with the first following the titular character, played by Ryan O'Neal , as he fights in the Seven Years' War, one of the first global conflicts that raged across the world in the mid-18th Century. The second part is about Barry's struggle after the war, with personal traumas and vices severely affecting his relationships with his new wife and daughter.

Poignant and surprisingly deep, Barry Lyndon paints an honest picture of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the havoc it can wreak on an individual's mind. The disorder is not something new or fabricated but something present since the inception of war itself, even if it was not yet called by that name. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, four of which it won , and is still fondly remembered as one of the greatest and most visually striking war movies of the decade.

4 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (1943)

Clive Candy looking intently in 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp'

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is interesting in that it is a World War II movie that came out as the war was still going on . An unconventional biopic about a fictional character, it not only takes place during the Second World War but also the First and even flashes back to the Second Boer War of 1899. Coming out in 1943, the film boasted the use of Technicolor, which was extremely uncommon for its time.

There's a little bit of everything in this movie, from action to romance to comedy, as it is strangely satirical when it comes to depicting the British army's chain of command. At the time of release, it was not at all appreciated, especially since patriotism was widespread, not to mention necessary during wartime. Nowadays, however, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp has aged like a fine wine, offering both criticism and a commendation towards the British armed forces that is much easier to enjoy now.

3 'Zulu' (1964)

Conflict: anglo-zulu war (1879).

Zulu takes place in the 19th Century and explores a war that is not commonly explored in cinema: the Anglo-Zulu War. This conflict only lasted for a few months, though public opinion on it has rightfully changed. It is now clear that the British were the aggressors and are now no longer seen as the heroes. Still, the movie itself is very enjoyable and tells a true story that is admittedly impressive.

In the midst of the war came the Battle of Rorke's Drift, in which 150 British troops, many of whom were wounded or sick, fought off thousands of Zulu warriors and successfully defended their position. Another interesting thing about the movie is that the Zulu King, King Cetshwayo kaMpande , is played by Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi , who is kaMpande's actual great-grandson in real life. Despite the changing perceptions regarding the conflict, Zulu is considered to be among the greatest British films and a crowning achievement of the war genre .

2 'The Dam Busters' (1955)

Two German officers observe something in the distance in 'The Dam Busters'

The Dam Busters is about Operation Chastise, in which British planes laden with specially-crafted bombs swooped down and destroyed important Nazi dams: one on the Eder River, one on the Sorpe, and another on the Möhne, with the objective of crippling Germany's booming industry. These three dams oversaw the Ruhr valley, in which a vast amount of military production was taking place.

The Dam Busters is not only a tale of a heroic mission behind enemy lines but a harrowing tale of sacrifice.

While two out of the three dams were successfully destroyed, many planes and the airmen on board were lost. The Dam Busters is not only a tale of a heroic mission behind enemy lines but a harrowing tale of sacrifice and how the war machine breeds innovation, especially when it comes to engineering weapons. Considered among the greatest war movies of all time, The Dam Busters is one for the books , and though it isn't as talked about as it should be in the modern day, it definitely earns its reputation .

1 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962)

Auda Tayi, Lawrence, and Sharif Ali, looking disturbed in 'Lawrence of Arabia'

Lawrence of Arabia is, by and large, considered one of the most influential and culturally important films of all time, as well as one of the all-time greats. The story takes place in the Middle East during World War I, during a time when the Hashemite Kingdom of Hejaz fought against the Ottoman Empire occupying their lands. The Hejazi find themselves supported by the British Empire, which sends archaeologist, diplomat, and military officer T. E. Lawrence on their behalf.

Lawrence is played by Peter O'Toole , who expertly portrays one of the most important figures in the Sinai Campaign of the War with spot-on accuracy and style. As one of the war movies with the best acting and overall production values, Lawrence of Arabia scored ten Oscar nominations, seven of which it won , and received countless other nominations and awards. Today, it is considered to be one of the greatest war movies ever made , and even though it's over 60 years old, it hasn't aged a bit.

32 Wedding Crashers Quotes That Still Make Me Laugh

Nearly 20 years after it was released, it's still hilarious.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers.

In the 2000s, there was no bigger brand in comedy than what was being delivered by the Frat Pack ( Ben Stiller , Owen Wilson , Luke Wilson , Will Ferrell , Steve Carell , Jack Black , and Vince Vaughn ), and Wedding Crashers is one of the greatest examples of that era. Years after its release, it remains as funny as ever – due both to a terrific script and amazing performances – and we’ve put together this feature celebrating the special lines that are funny no matter how many times you watch the movie.

rebecca de mornay in Wedding Crashers

“You shut your mouth when you’re talking to me!”

There are times when one can get so angry that their capacity to put together cogent thoughts completely fails. This line, as delivered by the great Rebecca De Mornay, is a perfect example of this, and it is the first big laugh in Wedding Crashers .

Owen Wilson dancing in Wedding Crashers

“We lost a lot of good men out there.” “Playing for the Yankees?”

It’s hinted at in the first act of Wedding Crashers that John Beckwith (Owen Wilson) isn’t as into the titular activity as he once was. Not only does this weird slip-up add evidence of these feelings, but it’s also a great mid-montage joke that John successfully rebounds from with aplomb.

Owen Wilson pointing in Wedding Crashers

“He lived with mother until he was 40! She tried to poison his oatmeal!”

It’s set up early on that Chazz Reinhold is a chaotic individual (a reputation to which he eventually lives up), as John’s declarative statement about him really tells you everything that you need to know about the man and how he lives.

Vince Vaughn syrup hair in Wedding Crashers

“I happen to know everything there is to know about maple syrup. I love maple syrup. I love maple syrup on pancakes; I love it on pizza. I love to take a little bit and put it in my hair when I’ve had a rough week. What do you think holds it up, slick?”

The early exchange between John and Jeremy about their cover story – the latter pitching that they be the owners of a maple syrup conglomerate – is wonderfully illustrative of the brilliant chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The former’s razzle-dazzle about his syrup expertise is ridiculous, and it gets an equally silly response.

Owen Wilson outraged in Wedding Crashers

“Grow up, Peter Pan! Count Chocula!”

Why does John call Jeremy “Count Chocula” at the end of his burn regarding outlandish ideas for a cover story? There is no real answer, but it doesn’t matter, because that line gets a chuckle with every viewing of Wedding Crashers .

Make me a bicycle clown kid in Wedding Crashers

“Whatever! Make me a bicycle, clown!”

Jeremy has a big personality, and one gets the sense that it’s hard to put him back on his heels… but that’s exactly what happens when he tries his balloon-twisting gambit and runs into an intense young boy.

Vince Vaughn and Isla Fisher on beach in Wedding Crashers

“I always knew my first time would be on a beach!”

With those 11 words from Gloria Cleary, Jeremy Grey’s wedding crashing adventure becomes an absolute nightmare, and Isla Fisher ’s delivery initiates a cackle every time. If Jeremy’s story is a roller coaster in Wedding Crashers , that’s equivalent to the first big drop.

Vince Vaughn serious in Wedding Crashers

“I don’t think you’re appreciating the urgency here. Not only is she a virgin, she’s totally off the reservation! I’m terrified of this broad”

The intense fear that Vince Vaughn gets across in his urgency to hit the ejector seat from the Cleary wedding is gold that would properly fit in a horror movie.

Vince Vaughn fake happy in Wedding Crashers

“Oh please. You and I both know I’m a phenomenal dancer. Now I know you’re lying through your teeth. You’ll do anything to get me to go on this thing. Even if I have to walk into the lion’s den.”

Jeremy might be petrified of the possibility he might be trapped for a weekend with Gloria Cleary, but he is a man of integrity who will clearly never tolerate someone besmirching his talent for dancing.

Vince Vaughn gets off boat in Wedding Crashers

“She took me below deck for forty-five minutes. I have no bodily fluids left in me.”

At the start of Wedding Crashers , time has slowly siphoned all of the fun of crashing weddings from John Beckwith, but in Jeremy’s case, it’s quickly drained from him.

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in golf attire in Wedding Crashers

“I’m not even going to say it, but you know I’m upset.”

If I had to wear those golf pants, I would be upset too.

Omnomnomnom guy in Wedding Crashers

“That’s what we call a sack lunch! Nomnomnomnomnom.”

Sack Lodge and his cronies are a bunch of jerks who inspire more teeth-grinding in Wedding Crashers than laughs, but Carson Elrod’s delivery as Flip following Jeremy being tackled in the football game is indisputably hilarious.

Football and Crabcakes equal maryland in Wedding Crashers

“Yeah! Crabcakes and Football. That's what Maryland does!”

I really have to give it up to Flip. The guy knows how to properly celebrate overkill aggression during a backyard game of touch football.

Vince Vaughn tackled in Wedding Crashers

“If I had any air in my lungs, I’d scream at you.”

Poor, Jeremy. He just wanted to have some fun, and instead, he finds himself hooking up with a lunatic and regularly getting pummeled to the ground all in the name of being a good wingman. He’s a trooper.

Isla Fisher and Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers

“Gloria, please. I'm exhausted. I've had a very long day... my leg's cut and bleeding. I'm really not in the mood for this.”

Is Jeremy a cad who lies to women? Yes. Is some of what he experiences during his weekend with the Clearys an example of karmic, deserved retribution? Certainly.  But boy, does Vince Vaughn sell pained exhaustion well for laughs.

Isla Fisher in Wedding Crashers

“Don’t ever leave me. Because I’d find you!”

It’s clear that something is wrong with Gloria from the outset – with behavior like holding her breath and stamping when she doesn’t get her way with her father – but this is the line where she goes from being a weirdo to a terror.

Jane Seymour in Wedding Crashers

“Pervert!”

When you think about it, Gloria Cleary is very obviously the daughter of Kathleen Cleary (Jane Seymour) – as evidenced by the bizarre, seductive cat-and-mouse game that she plays with John throughout their weekend together.

Vince Vaughn motoboating in Wedding Crashers

“Hey, what were they like anyway? They looked pretty good, are they real? Are they built for speed or comfort? What'd you do with them? Motorboat? You play the motorboat?”

A big part of what sells this line is Jeremy’s mood change. At the start of their conversation, he is wholly drained and seemingly ready to collapse, but the simple mention of Kathleen coming on to John brings him back to life.

Vince Vaughn angry at breakfast in Wedding Crashers

“I’m a little too traumatized to have a scone.”

This line is extra funny when you consider the heaping plateful of food he puts together after arriving in the kitchen the morning after the roughest night of his life. He can eat (especially if it’s all covered in his favorite condiment: maple syrup), but scones are just too much after his traumatic experience with Gloria and her family.

Vince Vaughn eating breakfast in Wedding Crashers

“I'm gonna go see Dr. Finklestein and I'm gonna tell him we have a whole new bag of issues. We can forget about mom for a while.”

It’s nice to know that Jeremy recognizes the importance of good mental health. The guy clearly has a lot of issues before we meet him in the story, but one can especially understand why he would need to talk to a professional following his weekend with the Clearys.

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson hunting in Wedding Crashers

“I mean like, hunt a human being right now, ‘Most Dangerous Game.’ Like a worthy adversary. Not a human being that's armed, but a clever, clever, human being who knows the jungle. Or the woods.”

I’m not going to lie: if this line were to be used as a jumping off point to create a ridiculous 20-years-later sequel to Wedding Crashers , you would not hear a single complaint coming from me. In fact, I downright hope it happens.

Vince Vaughn injured in Wedding Crashers

“I hope you flip your bike over and knock your two front teeth out! You leave me in the trenches taking grenades, John!”

There’s an argument to be made that John doesn’t ultimately show nearly enough respect for Jeremy in Wedding Crashers … but Jeremy sure does whine a lot (though the talent of Vince Vaughn makes it hilarious).

Vince Vaughn confessing in Wedding Crashers

“Maybe there's something about me that I'm a little cuckoo. I know it's a surprise, I know it's not on the surface. I mean, I had an imaginary friend when I was kid, and his name was Shiloh! We used to play checkers with each other every day, and bless his heart, Shiloh would always let me win!”

Another line that could be the platform for a Wedding Crashers follow-up. Jeremy Grey is a fascinating individual, and the brief insights we get into his wild mind are amazing. I’d watch This Is 40 -esque sequel that centers on Jeremy and Gloria’s relationship that is structured with flashback sequences that show their origins – including Jeremy’s bond with Shiloh.

Vince Vaughn with painting and Owen Wilson Wedding Crashers

“The painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.”

If I were Jeremy, I perhaps wouldn’t want to keep a souvenir from one of the weirdest, most traumatic nights of my life, but it’s very clear that he is wired differently.

Vince Vaughn at desk in Wedding Crashers

“She hasn't returned your phone calls, she hasn't responded to any of your letters, she didn't respond to the candygram. God knows what happened to the kitten you got for her. 'Cause she didn't keep it, and I know you're not raising the thing. I think it's very obvious at this juncture that she just flat out does not wanna see you.”

Vince Vaughn’s rapid fire delivery is best utilized when he can get on a run, and this bit from Jeremy as he tries to get John over his crush on Claire is the actor at the peak of his game.

Owen Wilson angry and pointing in Wedding Crashers

“Listen, I’m getting married.” “Get out.”

A lot of credit goes to director David Dobkin and editor Mark Livolsi with this one. John’s instantaneous response to Jeremy’s “good” news is top-notch comedic timing aided by smart comedic minds working on the film in post-production.

Will Ferrell with nunchucks in Wedding Crashers

“I almost nunchucked you. You don’t even realize.”

Will Ferrell was a cameo king in the 2000s, and Wedding Crashers is among his best surprise appearances. His serious arrival out of the shadows is excellent, but then he provides a tension breaker that is somehow both a relief and a red flag.

Will Ferrell screaming about meatloaf in Wedding Crashers

“Ma! The meatloaf!”

I have to imagine that this is a line that is quoted around the world whenever meatloaf is served. It might be the most quotable Wedding Crashers quote.

Owen Wilson apology in Wedding Crashers

“I'm sorry I called you white trash.” “Apology accepted.” “And I'm sorry I called you hillbilly. I don't even know what that means.”

This is not only a funny exchange because of the Owen Wilson/Vince Vaughn banter, but because it’s (unbeknownst to John and Jeremy) a callback to the verbal tussle between Rebecca De Mornay and Dwight Yoakam’s characters in the film’s opening scene.

Owen Wilson crashed a funeral in Wedding Crashers

“I crashed a funeral earlier. It wasn’t my idea, I was basically dragged to it. I went with Chazz who you forgot to tell me is totally insane. He also might be a genius because it actually does work, he's cleaning up.”

The shock that this admission sends through the audience is fully earned. It’s a wildly horrible thing to do, and though it’s funny to witness as a viewer, it’s questionable that Claire instantly forgives him for the atrocious behavior.

Vince Vaughn throwing punch in Wedding Crashers

“Share that with the Dalai Lama.”

Funny as it may be to see Jeremy get violently tackled in the game of touch football in Wedding Crashers , it is also immensely satisfying to not only see him get his revenge, but to deliver a sharp line to pair with his hit.

Will Ferrell fake crying in Wedding Crashers

“So damn beautiful. With every death there comes rebirth. It’s the circle of life. We’re gonna be alright.”

Using a wedding to further heighten the emotions of a woman picked up while in mourning at a funeral? Chazz might be a moralless sociopath, but there is no arguing that the man is an artist at his horrible, horrible craft.

Wedding Crashers is available for purchase on Blu-ray and DVD, and it is available for rental and purchase on a wide variety of digital platforms.

The 25 most awkward dinner scenes in movies

Be glad when your group dinner isn't nearly as uncomfortable as these movie moments.

Warner Bros/Kobal/Shutterstock; 20th Century Fox/Everett; MGM/Everett

Sure, the food is great, and getting together with the family is nice, but it's rare to get through a big family dinner without at least a little bit of awkwardness — it just comes with the territory. Whether it be an unwanted guest, inappropriate comments from ignorant relatives, or a poorly cooked meal, these are the dinners you want to be done with as soon as possible.

Movies are littered with these kinds of awkward dinner scenes that we can (thankfully) laugh at from afar, if not cringe in recognition. Ahead, 25 of the most painful shared meals in film.

Hereditary (2018)

A family grappling with impossible grief attempts to get through a dinner in one piece. They're unsuccessful in doing so, as Annie ( Toni Collette ) unleashes her fury on her son, Peter ( Alex Wolff ), for not taking responsibility for a tragic accident. While Hereditary has plenty of scares, this centerpiece dinner scene haunts us the most.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)

The Griswold family is known for turning every situation into a mess, and that's exactly what they do to their Christmas Eve dinner. After an elderly relative leads the family in the Pledge of Allegiance instead of grace, Clark ( Chevy Chase ) begins to carve the turkey, only to witness it burst in a puff of smoke as he cuts into it.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Having dinner with your brother's new girlfriend might be a bit awkward. Imagine how much more awkward it becomes when you see that said girlfriend is clearly a sex doll, whom your brother believes to be a real woman. Yeah...

Dinner for Schmucks (2010)

A dinner party couldn't get any more chaotic if you purposefully packed it full of eccentrics — and that's exactly what the malicious businessmen in Dinner for Schmucks do. The meal is brought to an end after a fire breaks out and an important Swiss investor loses his finger to a bird. So, all in all, not great.

Beetlejuice (1988)

Being possessed and forced to sing a famous Jamaican folk song is definitely out of the ordinary for most dinner parties, but not the one in Beetlejuice . To try to scare the Deetz family out of their home, the recently deceased Maitlands ( Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis ) possess them and their dinner guests to involuntarily perform Harry Belafonte's definitive version of "Day-O," much to their confusion.

August: Osage County (2013)

Claire Folger/Weinstein Company/Everett

The sweltering Oklahoma sun is an apt symbol for the flaring tempers of the Weston family when their patriarch dies. After assembling for dinner, matriarch Violet ( Meryl Streep ) goes on a "true-telling" tear, insulting her family members in such a way that it leads to a knock-out, drag-out fight.

Meet the Parents (2000)

Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection

Greg's ( Ben Stiller ) desperation to impress his girlfriend's parents sets the bar for awkward dinner scenes in modern comedies. Greg does everything wrong: He tries to pass off the lyrics to "Day by Day" from Godspell as a prayer, claims that he milks cats, and tops it all off by destroying the urn that held the ashes of his girlfriend's beloved grandmother.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Happy-go-lucky Avon saleswoman Peg ( Dianne Wiest ) may be trying her best to keep this family dinner pleasant, but the pale man with sharp blades for fingers that she invited over can't help but make things pretty awkward as he constantly tries and fails to pick up even a single pea. Her son Kevin (Robert Oliveri) won't stop staring, and her husband Bill ( Alan Arkin ) insists on calling their guest Ed instead of Edward.

Wedding Crashers (2005)

When the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury invites wedding crashers John ( Owen Wilson ) and Jeremy ( Vince Vaughn ) to dinner, the two accept so John can spend more time with the man's daughter. But the dysfunction is evident right away, as a homophobic grandma, an emotionally sensitive son, some drugged wine, and an under-the-table sexual act make this dinner one that nobody will forget.

Back to the Future (1985)

It's hard to imagine anything being more awkward than eating dinner next to your mom while she hits on you. Understandably, Marty McFly ( Michael J. Fox ) darts out of his grandparents' 1955 dinner when his mother touches his leg after suggesting he stay in her room that night.

My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

That awkward moment when your fake fiancé turns an equally fake story at lunch into a full performance of a classic song. Everyone at the table gets into singing their parts of Dionne Warwick's "I Say a Little Prayer" in the middle of the restaurant.

Pineapple Express (2008)

A 25-year-old stoner showing up late and bloody to meet his high school-aged girlfriend's parents is already a setup for a disastrous dinner. From there, things only get worse, as Dale ( Seth Rogen ) rambles on about a murder plot and his girlfriend's father responds by telling him to leave before he gets his gun. Guess he's not staying for dessert...

American History X (1998)

A discussion about police brutality at the dinner table is bound to be pretty heated, but it gets downright scary when it's between a young neo-Nazi and a liberal Jewish professor who is dating his mom. After going on a racist diatribe, Derek ( Edward Norton ) nearly suffocates his sister, screams obscenities at his mom's boyfriend, and shows him his swastika tattoo before kicking him out of the house.

The Menu (2022)

Celebrity chef Julian Slowik ( Ralph Fiennes ) gathers a select group of patrons at his island restaurant. While the dinner guests are eager for a five-course meal, the evening quickly takes a dark turn as Julian unveils a series of stunts fueled by revenge, putting a whole new meaning to "dinner theater."

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

It's no ordinary dinner when you find out your ex-husband has been disguising himself as an older female nanny. Daniel ( Robin Williams ) is forced to jump between two important meals, one as himself for his job, and another as the nanny Mrs. Doubtfire for the birthday celebration organized by his ex-wife Miranda's ( Sally Field ) new guy Stuart ( Pierce Brosnan ). Of course, things go wrong, as Daniel's facial prosthetics fall off in front of his ex-wife. As expected, she doesn't take it well.

Hannibal (2001)

It's pretty safe to assume any dinner with Hannibal Lecter would be far from typical. In the follow-up film to The Silence of the Lambs , Agent Starling ( Julianne Moore ) wakes up drugged at a dinner table as Lecter ( Anthony Hopkins ) removes the scalp of a Justice Department official ( Ray Liotta ), cuts out a piece of his brain, and feeds it to him. Not the most appetizing main course...

Legally Blonde (2001)

Elle Woods ( Reese Witherspoon ) goes on a romantic dinner date with her boyfriend, Warner ( Matthew Davis ), expecting that this will be the night he proposes. She jumps the gun and excitedly says "I do" before realizing that he's actually breaking up with her. Understandably, Elle is upset when Warner tells her she wouldn't make a respectable senator's wife, and begins to sob.

Django Unchained (2012)

Dinner is a bit bizarre when a plantation owner ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) insists on examining the skull of an enslaved person at the table. However, it gets much worse when his henchmen pull guns on Django ( Jamie Foxx ) and Schultz ( Christoph Waltz ) and he rubs his bloody hand over the face of Django's wife ( Kerry Washington ) while threatening to kill her.

The Break-Up (2006)

A big dinner with your ex and her family is already awkward enough, but it becomes downright cringeworthy when her brother talks passionately about his a cappella group and then tries to make you sing with him.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

There are always some surprises at Dr. Frank-N-Furter's (Tim Curry) mansion, and dinnertime is no exception. Frank reveals that the meat they've all eaten has been made from the body of his ex-lover, Eddie. Hands down, the worst meatloaf dinner ever.

American Beauty (1999)

Asparagus has never been so scary. What should've been simply an uneventful family dinner in suburbia becomes a sarcastic yelling match after Lester ( Kevin Spacey ) quits his job and blackmails his boss. As his wife Carolyn ( Annette Bening ) berates him, he throws a plate of asparagus against the wall and tells her that he's going to do what he wants from now on.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)

Before the Bobby family can dive into their feast of Domino's, KFC, and Taco Bell, Ricky ( Will Ferrell ) begins saying grace to baby Jesus, which frustrates his wife Carley ( Leslie Bibb ) and father-in-law Chip (Ted Manson) who remind him that Jesus grew up. After the prayer, Ricky's sons Walker (Houston Tumlin) and Texas Ranger (Grayson Russell) threaten their grandpa. When Ricky encourages the insults, Carley gets turned on and they decide to use the dinner table in place of a bed.

The Birdcage (1996)

Can a drag club owner and his partner/drag star get through a dinner with a highly conservative family without revealing their stereotypically "nontraditional" lifestyle? Albert ( Nathan Lane ) is able to convince the couple he's a woman for a while, but it doesn't last. That — on top of the homoerotic dinner plates and a soup full of hard-boiled eggs — turns dinner into an awkward mess.

Eraserhead (1977)

Nothing conventional happens in David Lynch 's feature film debut Eraserhead , and that includes the dinner scene in which Henry (Jack Nance) sits down with his girlfriend and her parents. He's given a miniature chicken to carve, but it begins moving and bleeding when he sticks his fork into it. Then, his girlfriend's mother convulses and leaves the table screaming. Maybe they should just order a pizza?

Beatriz at Dinner (2017)

roadside attractions

Beatriz ( Salma Hayek ) is a Mexican immigrant working as a masseuse in California. After a wealthy client ( Connie Britton ) invites her to an important dinner, the guests' out-of-touch conversations lead to more than a few awkward confrontations as Beatriz attempts to offer her alternative perspectives, unafraid of committing social faux pas.

8 Best New Series Coming to Netflix in September 2024

A murder mystery series starring Nicole Kidman and the latest season of the BBC favorite Call the Midwife tops our list.

Kasey Moore What's on Netflix Avatar

Picture: Duplass Brothers Productions

With Fall now upon us, Netflix is rolling out some of its big series lined up to conclude what has been a mixed year on the new series front, it must be said. Below, we’ll walk you through some of our most anticipated upcoming TV shows for the month, split between the new licensed and Netflix Original titles.

We must confess that September 2024 is looking a bit weaker on the series side, especially compared to August 2024 but that’s primarily because AMC boosted that month’s output. For the full list of what’s coming up throughout September , keep our full list of the month’s new arrivals bookmarked. You’ll also want to take a look at our top movie picks for the month .

Most Anticipated New Netflix Original Series Coming in September 2024

The perfect couple (limited series).

Coming to Netflix : September 5th

Over the summer, we got to watch Nicole Kidman shine in the romantic comedy movie A Family Affair , and we’re pleased to report she’ll be headlining this new limited series with a very different change of pace. Created by Jenna Lamia, the new series adapts the crime novel telling the story of a wedding that ends with disaster. A body is discovered before the wedding bells can ring out, and everybody is a suspect. It looks like a mix of Dead to Me and The White Lotus .

Jack Whitehall: Fatherhood with My Father (Limited Series)

Coming to Netflix: September 10th

If you’ve never seen the five seasons of Jack Whitehall’s travel comedy series Travels with My Father, then you’re absolutely missing out. It’s a mix of Prime Video’s The Farm and An Idiot Abroad , where the stand-up comedian and his father go on worldly adventures. Their chemistry is undeniable, and thankfully, the duo is back for a new spin-off series that’s very much cut from the same piece of cloth but with a different mission. With Whitehall having recently become a father, the duo wants to travel the world to answer some of their biggest questions about being a father in the modern world.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix : September 19th

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, best known for their work on American Horror Story, brought their talents to Netflix in the late 2010s, but it really wasn’t until DAHMER that the duo found success at the streamer. Soon after that series, headlined by a convincing performance from Evan Peters, Netflix announced that MONSTER(S) would become an anthology series. The second entry will arrive in September, ahead of season 3 going into production this October.

This new season takes aim at the brothers Lyle and Erik , who were both convicted of the murder of their parents in the mid-1990s. Bringing the story to life are the talents of Cooper Koch, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Javier Bardem, and Chloë Sevigny.

Everything Calls for Salvation (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix : September 26th

Everything Calls For Salvation S2 Netflix

Tutto Chiede Salvezza. (L to R) Drusilla Foer as Matilde, Federico Cesari as Daniele in episode 202 of Tutto Chiede Salvezza. Cr. Monica Chiappara/Netflix © 2024

As always, we like to highlight one or two international titles coming up, and the return of Everything Calls for Salvation is something we’re looking forward to, even though the first season at times was a hard watch given the depressing nature of the subject matter. In case you missed it, the first season followed Daniele as he’s committed to a psychiatric hospital, with each of the seven episodes following each day while there where a relationship blossoms.

The second season, now set over five weeks and five episodes, details what happened after season 1. Daniele and Nina have become parents and have new career paths, but you don’t have to look too far to see the cracks that are showing. The couple is now separated, with a painful and prolonged custody battle underway.

Gyeongseong Creature (Season 2)

Coming to Netflix : September 27th

Our second international pick is the long-awaited return of the South Korean historical horror thriller Gyeongseong Creature . Of course, we’re going to have to remove historical from its descriptors this season, as the show is set in the modern day rather than 1945.

Hopefully, the new time period won’t mean we lose any of the charm or allure that the first season bought us when it dropped last year.

Best Licensed Series Coming to Netflix in September 2024

Heels (seasons 1-2).

Coming to Netflix : September 15th

Heels Seasons 1 2 Coming To Netflix

Picture: Starz

Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig’s excellent wrestling drama series Heels is finally making its way onto Netflix midway through September. It was first announced to be heading to the platform a little earlier this year. Beloved by critics and audiences alike (even though it wasn’t able to find a substantial enough audience on Starz to justify a third season), the series follows the men and women fighting to keep their small wrestling promotion dreams alive.

Now, reportedly, should this show perform well on Netflix, we’ll see it potentially revived for a third entry. Given we’ve heard this for several licensed shows that have come to Netflix so far in 2024, we’re not getting our hopes set particularly high.

Penelope (Season 1)

Coming to Netflix : September 24th

Netflix has teamed up with Duplass Brothers Productions on a couple of major movies in the past, starting with 2019’s Paddeton and following up with Horse Girl a year later. After four years, they’re working with Jay and Mark again. While this series isn’t coming to Netflix as an Original series, it is going to be hitting Netflix exclusively. While their output isn’t to everyone’s taste, they have a unique artistic flair.

Mark Duplass and Mel Eslyn created and wrote the new drama, which follows a sixteen-year-old girl who rebuilds her life in the uncharted wilderness. The new series stars Megan Stott, Austin Abrams, and Cynthia Geary.

Call the Midwife (Season 13)

Coming to Netflix : September 2nd

Call The Midwife Best Period Dramas On Netflix In 2024

Call The Midwife Best Period Dramas On Netflix In 2024

Our final pick for the month is the most recent season of the crowd-pleasing series Call the Midwife, which is one of the very few BBC shows that remains on Netflix in the United States and, better yet, still gets regular annual season drops following its first run on PBS.

The period drama series has seen plenty of changes over the past decade of being on the air, but the show’s heart and charm has never left. This season of the show that follows midwives working at a bustling hospital in the 1950s and 1960s sees a new training scheme begin.

As with our movie post, we’ll update this with a few more series releases midway through September, so keep it bookmarked for when that happens.

Which of these new series are you most looking forward to watching in September? Let us know in the comments.

A Wedding Story Review 1

A Wedding Story Review: Shaitaan, Munjya, and Stree 2; 2024 has been the year of horror and horror comedy films. Now, one more horror film titled A Wedding Story has hit the big screens today. The movie stars Vaibhav Tatwawadi And Mukti Mohan in the lead roles, and it is directed by Abhinav Pareek. So, is this horror film worth a watch? Find out in our review below...

The movie revolves around Vicky (Vaibhav Tatwawadi) and Preeti (Mukti Mohan). They are engaged and are all set to get married. But, Vicky's uncle passes away during the period of Panchak which is considered to be a bad period for someone to die. So, a Pandit Ji tells the family to do a ritual but Vicky's cousin Tarun (Lakshvir Singh Saran) doesn't let the ritual happen. Now, after a few days, Vicky and Preeti's wedding preparations start and a lot of paranormal activities start taking place and there are deaths that take place in the film. Now, will Vicky and his family solve this supernatural problem?

The basic concept of A Wedding Story is very interesting, and the movie starts on an intriguing note. In fact, in just first 5 minutes there a jump scare and you start hoping that this will be a good horror film.

However, after an engaging first 15 minutes, the movie starts faltering and becomes a bit boring and predictable. In the second half, there are a couple of scenes that will give you chills and thrills, but the strictly average narration and the predictability are the biggest hurdles here. A better narration could have done wonders for the movie.

A Wedding Story Actors' Performances

Vaibhav Tatwawadi, whom we saw in Article 370 earlier this year, has performed well in the film. But, his Punjabi accent is quite uneven. Mukti Mohan fails to impress with her performance. She has a good role to portray but doesn't do justice to the character. Lakshvir Singh Saran and Akshay Anand are decent in their respective roles.

Monica Chaudhary, who had impressed one and all with her performance in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, is also very good here. Child actor Urvi Upadhyay leaves a strong mark with her performance. Monica and Urvi are surely the best in the cast.

A Wedding Story Music

In such horror movies, background music play an important role, and well, it is quite impressive here. It is not like the loud music that we get to hear in horror movies, but it is subtle and suits the film's theme.

A Wedding Story Review Final Verdict

Overall, A Wedding Story had the potential to be a better film if the direction was good. But, unfortunately it just turns out to be an average horror movie with a few jump scares here and there.
