On the occasion of World Environment Day, it is essential for all to realize that every little deed matters when it comes to saving the environment. Today, we hear news like the loss of biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest, the rise in global temperature, water pollution, the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches, climate change, etc. All of these challenges are the result of our careless and selfish attitude towards the environment. This planet is sustaining on a limited amount of resources and degrading and 

In 2022, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) celebrated its 50th anniversary. 

The 1972 Stockholm Convention was the first major environmental summit, which was named the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. All the participating countries were encouraged to work to meet environmental challenges in all spheres of life. A total of 26 principle issues were put on the table.

After this, several environmental summits were conducted to raise awareness about global environmental conservation and how to meet sustainable development goals. Some of them were the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, the Kyoto Protocol of 1992, the Paris Peace Agreement in 2015, etc.

The objectives of World Environment Day address every issue related to our environmental concerns.

This speech on saving nature throws light on why it is needed by mankind to protect and preserve the environment. Our environment offers everything from clothing, water, food to shelter. All living beings are a part of the ecosystem. Hence, it becomes our responsibility to take care of the natural habitat.

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest issues that the modern world faces today. To meet the wants of society, we are putting too much pressure on the natural environment. This leads to damage to nature. The soil is losing its fertility, and in most places, soil pollution makes it difficult to grow crops. Even air and water pollution is the effect of mass urbanization and industrialisation. Controlling the pollution is a need of the hour, however, this still gets neglected by us. I am delivering the speech to save the earth to make you aware of what can be done by each one of us sitting here. We can make our earth a better place to live by taking simple steps like planting a tree, throwing waste in proper bins, saying no to plastic bags, etc. Rather than complaining about pollution, such small steps must be taken to make our environment sustainable.

Environmental problems are also the result of vast technological advancements in the last few years. The overuse of resources to build IT infrastructure is responsible for the loss of the natural environment. Government and international organizations must take proper steps to control pollution and save our mother earth. Environmental protection policies must be strictly enforced. Everyone has to come together to save our mother nature. 

Saving our environment is much more important today than ever before. The degrading quality of earth life is what we all are familiar with. However, the early signs of the upcoming destruction are visible. The harsh weather conditions, increased carbon dioxide emissions, melting of glaciers, etc. are the major concerns that needed immediate attention. Let us all do what we can to save our environment and preserve our resources for future generations.

Good morning to all. Today, I am going to give a short speech on saving the environment. We are all aware of how the environment is important to us. We cannot afford to harm the environment any longer. In today’s modern world, our planet earth is affected significantly. However, if we want to live in harmony with nature, we cannot put the entire pressure on the environment. Living beings, for their survival, depend completely on the natural and manmade environment. It is impossible to live without the resources that the atmosphere provides. In such a situation, it becomes critical to save mother nature from getting over-exploited due to the increasing population. 

We all know that factors like overpopulation, deforestation, etc. are responsible for environmental destruction. Small steps taken by us can go a long way. We must try to use as much public transport as possible to protect the air we breathe. We must throw garbage in the right bins so that proper disposal of waste and waste management can be done. We need to make efforts in the right direction to conserve our natural resources and habitat. Some of the ways by which we can achieve this are to use renewable energy, avoid plastic bags, plant more trees etc. 

Mother nature offers so much to us. We must protect the environment and nature and be a part of sustainable development programmes.

Main Causes of Environmental Degradation

Pollution, in any form, is destructive to the environment, whether it be in the form of air, water, land, or noise.

Rapid population increase limits natural resources, resulting in environmental degradation.

Increasing population equals more need for food, clothing, and housing. More land is needed to grow food and provide housing for people. Deforestation occurs, as a result, contributing to environmental degradation.

Deforestation is also caused by using forest areas for agriculture, livestock grazing, fuelwood harvesting, and logging. When forest size decreases, deforestation contributes to global warming by releasing carbon into the atmosphere.

The exhaust gas released by industries is one of the primary sources of pollution. Lead is found in large concentrations in the environment due to a range of substances such as gasoline, paints, ceramics, and batteries.

In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of private vehicles. The higher the number of cars, the higher the rate of pollution that causes smog. Lower-level ozone, which is detrimental, is caused by hydrocarbons emitted by engines.

The less water you consume, the less drainage and wastewater end up in the ocean.

Afforestation must be fostered, and public awareness must be promoted.

Energy-efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas release. Also, flip the light switch off when you leave the room.

Fuelwood and timber wood should be used wisely.

In your house and office, use non-toxic materials.

We should maintain grazing lands and produce cover crops to keep soils from blowing away.

Using public transportation, walking, or riding a bike to class are all preferable options that assist the environment, save money, and provide exercise.

My message is that we'll be watching you.

This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet, you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!

You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words and yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!

For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you're doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.

You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency, but no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that. Because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act then you would be evil and that I refuse to believe.

The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50 percent chance of staying below 1.5 degrees and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.

Fifty percent may be acceptable to you, but those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of equity and climate justice.

They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist.

So a 50 percent risk is simply not acceptable to us, we who have to live with the consequences.

How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just business as usual and some technical solutions? With today's emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone within less than eight and a half years.

There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today, because these numbers are too uncomfortable and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.

You are failing us, but the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you and if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.

We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up and change is coming, whether you like it or not.

What is pollution? Pollution can be defined as the introduction of unwanted harmful substances into the earth that brings adverse effects on the environment and living organisms. It destroys the ecological balance. There are mainly six types of environmental pollution and they are air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, thermal pollution, and radioactive pollution.

Air pollution can be defined as the mixing of external harmful gases and particles in the atmosphere. It is caused by the release of contaminants like toxic gases, chemicals, and other particulate matter. The impact of air pollution can be severe; it varies from person to person. Air pollution impoverishes our lives by causing global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion and increasing the risk of cancer, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, etc.

Water pollution is caused by the illogical waste management of human beings. Contaminants are introduced into the water bodies by human activities like disposing of untreated industrial sewages, agricultural runoffs with fertilisers and pesticides, dumping of solid wastes, etc. Water pollution is a great threat to marine life. Disrupting marine life affects our food cycle and damages our ecosystem.

The contamination of soil due to the presence of chemicals or other harmful particles is called soil pollution. It, directly and indirectly, affects our lives. Excessive use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers for agricultural production, mining, improper waste disposal, and acid rain are some of the major causes of soil pollution. As a result of soil pollution, the soil loses its fertility and deteriorates natural vegetation. It adversely affects the organisms residing in the soil, degrades agricultural productivity, and even results in famine.

Noise pollution is caused by the excessive amounts of noise in our environment. Noise pollution is generally man-made, and it badly affects the natural balance of our ecosystem. Any sound which is over 85 decibels is harmful to human health. Due to globalisation and industrialisation, the level of noise pollution in our environment has increased drastically. Some of the main contributors to noise pollution are machinery used in industries, noise emitted by vehicles, sounds produced during construction work, noise during public festivals and social events, etc. Noise pollution has become a major issue for many developed and developing nations. As a consequence, people are facing sleeping disorders, hearing loss, hypertension, stress-related illnesses, etc.

Thermal pollution is caused by the sudden increase or decrease of the temperature of a natural body of water. Industrial machinery and power plants are the major contributors to thermal pollution. For the process of cooling machinery, water from nature is collected and used. But after this mechanism, the temperature of the water gets altered. By pumping back the water, the thermal balance of the natural source of water becomes affected and results in thermal pollution. It changes the oxygen level and destroys ecosystems.

The pollution caused by the release of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions, nuclear weapon production and decommissioning, mining of radioactive ores, and disposal of radioactive wastes are called radioactive pollution.

All this pollution has had a great impact on our lives. Many environmental catastrophes like global warming, acid rain, famine, drought, earthquakes, etc., are the returns given to us by earth for our greed. If we continue to pollute, then be ready to face the end.

Environmental pollution is one of the most troubling global issues. It is caused by the harmful effect of pollutants that are discharged into the environment by the irrational actions of human beings. The actions of such pollutants badly affect our environment and transform it into an unhealthy place to live. Environmental pollution can be stated as the unfavourable alteration of our environment with severe long term consequences. Improper waste management, exploitation of natural resources, and urban-industrial technological revolutions are considered some of the main causes for environmental pollution.

Environmental pollution is a global issue, and it is not at all a new term to any of us. The phenomenon has been here for many decades, but the solution still remains obscure. The wheel of time is spinning over human beings and nature. Nature will always find its way to survive, and it’s our only hope. Like the words of John James Audubon, “A true conservationist is a man who knows that his fathers do not give the world, but borrowed from his children”, let’s realise that the conservation of our environment is never a choice but an urgency for our future.

The types of pollution vary depending on the nature and the component on which the pollutant marks its effect.

Nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, mercury, CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon), particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds are some of the harmful pollutants that cause environmental pollution.

Many of Trump's claims about the border immigration and crime don't stack up

Former President Donald Trump made a campaign swing through Grand Rapids on Tuesday to talk about record levels of migrants coming across the southern border without prior authorization and the impact it's having on communities ― especially in terms of crime ― more than a thousand miles away in Michigan.

As usual, Trump in many instances didn't hew to the facts or left out important context while characterizing his own record or making claims about President Joe Biden's policies, though it is without question that U.S. Border Patrol's numbers of so-called encounters with migrants trying to cross the border has exploded during Biden's term .

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also reported that the number of removals and detentions ― as well as the number of non-detained immigrants released into the country pending a final determination on their status ― rose substantially in 2023 over the previous year . So did the number of immigrants arrested or detained on criminal charges, though that is a small fraction of the total number of people who have entered the country. And as has been reported often before, immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans, not least because a commission of a serious enough crime can get them deported.

Here's a look at some of Trump's claims and the facts behind them:

'Carnage and chaos and killing from all over the world'

Trump began his short speech by emphasizing how mass migration into the U.S. is generating violent crime, spotlighting the recent arrest of a man deported in 2020, who reentered the country and was accused of shooting a woman with whom he had previously had a relationship in Grand Rapids last month, though her family disputes they were close. Police have charged Brandon Ortiz-Vite, 25, with killing Ruby Garcia. But there is no evidence that migration overall has caused a spike in violent crime, if not least for the reason that violent crime was down across the U.S. last year , according to the FBI. Michigan hasn't yet put out its specific crime totals for 2023 but in 2022, v iolent crime was down from the previous year while property crimes were up.

Illegal immigration 'was at its lowest point' when Trump served

There is no question that Trump made cracking down on undocumented migrants crossing into the U.S. and expelling those already in the country a major theme of his 2016 run for the White House, just as he is doing running for reelection this year, and he enjoyed some success. Both in 2017 and in 2020, the number of southern border encounters were among the lowest they've been in decades (with the only other real exception being in 2011, just after the recession). But in 2020, Trump was helped greatly by the economic slowdown created by COVID-19 and the authority he had to turn back migrants for public health reasons (whether that was really effective as a public health measure or not) . He also saw spikes in the number of immigrants crossing the border as well and implemented some policies ― like those that wound up emphasizing family separations ― that ran into legal issues and a backlash from the public.

'People coming in from prisons and mental institutions'

This has long been a claim Trump has made, going back to when he began his 2016 election campaign, only then, as the Washington Post recently pointed out , it was all about Mexico "sending people with a lot of problems" and his implication that many, if not most, were drug users and rapists. Now (with Mexican immigration down and immigration from Central American and South America up), Trump claims that prisons and other institutions across the world are being emptied and criminals are being sent into the U.S. There is no basis for this claim that we were able to locate and the Trump campaign, when asked about it by the Free Press, offered no source material to back it up. The Post also noted studies that worldwide prison populations are up, not down, though numbers in some countries fell during the pandemic.

Crime in Venezuela is 'down 67%'

This is related to the previous claim: In Trump's speech Tuesday and in a Michigan radio interview on Monday, Trump claimed that the crime rate is down by two-thirds in the turbulent South American country and that officials there are "taking all of their gangs and criminals … and depositing them in the United States." Again, there is no evidence of this being the case, though some 8 million people in that country have attempted to flee a humanitarian crisis caused by political unrest and economic turmoil, with hundreds of thousands trying to make it into the U.S. via Mexico. Bloomberg News reported that the Venezuelan Observatory of Violence , which is part of a group called Insight Crime that tracks data internationally, said recently that the country's rate of violent death had dropped to its lowest level in more than two decades "as both criminals and victims fled the nation’s economic crisis," citing the observatory's director. But the number dropped by about a quarter year over year, not two-thirds. And while it's logical that a number of both criminals and victims made their way to the U.S., there is no evidence of any plot by Venezuelan officials to encourage it.

Chinese migrants 'all seem fit and ready for military service'

This offhand remark came up as Trump talked about the number of migrants coming from all over the world, including China, where he said 29,000 immigrants to the U.S. originated in "the last few months." Then he added the comment about their age and fitness, suggesting it was strange. Coming at a time when concerns regarding Chinese competition, technology and supply chain constraints are high, it could stoke additional fears. It is plainly true that Chinese immigration across the southern border is up: PolitiFact, a fact-checking product put out by the Poynter Institute , noted that there were some 52,000 border encounters with Chinese immigrants in fiscal 2023, far higher than the norm, and that the trend continues. But U.S. Customs and Border Protection, it said, doesn't release age or gender data and "military age" can mean different things in different countries. As for whether many of the migrants are younger men, that wouldn't be terribly surprising, given the harsh conditions in attempting such a journey. Meanwhile, there's no evidence of a Communist Party plot to send people to the U.S. or elsewhere and many believe the migrants are motivated by the same desire s for economic opportunities and political rights not available in that country.

Whitmer offering money for 'free housing for illegals'

Trump blasted Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for a program, much criticized by Republicans, through the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity , that offers up to $500 a month to refugees and "other newcomer population-eligible households" to pay for housing. "Many refugees and other newcomers face critical housing challenges and this program will increase access to better and more affordable housing opportunities," the state website says. But as part of this program, people must qualify for the benefit and provide proof of an "eligible immigration status." It is possible that some asylum seekers, who would ultimately be found by officials to not have credible claims, could benefit — but that is different than declaring them "illegals" upfront, as Trump did.

Did Trump talk to woman's family as he claimed?

During the speech, Trump claimed to have made contact with Ruby Garcia's relatives, saying he had talked with "some of her family" ahead of his campaign event in Grand Rapids. But WOOD-TV Target 8 in Grand Rapids reported that Garcia's family, which watched the livestream at their home, was in "disbelief" at the remark, since the former president hadn't spoken to any of them. "He did not speak with any of us, so it was kind of shocking seeing that he had said that he had spoke with us, and misinforming people on live TV,” Ruby Garcia’s sister, Mavi Garcia, who has been serving as the family's spokesperson, said. She also said the extended family is close and she would know if Trump had spoken to any other members.

Our responsibility as intelligent beings is to conserve nature and its components. The goal of World Environment Day is to encourage awareness and action to conserve our environment.

The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 1973.

The day of the Stockholm conference on the human environment was declared as Environment Day.

World Environment Day was observed two years after the designation, with the theme "only one world."

"Save the Earth, save yourselves. Think green. Be green. Stop polluting" is the slogan for Earth Day.

Different countries observe World Environment Day.

This event was held in Sweden in 2022.

This festival is held with a different theme each year.

It has been 50 years since the United Nations established June 5 as World Environment Day.

This event will be hosted in Pakistan in 2023 with the theme of Ecosystem restoration.

Good morning everyone. Today, on World Environment Day, I would like to remind us all of the importance of protecting and preserving our environment.

Mother nature is generous and giving. Mankind relied on her for a long time to meet their requirements. War, deforestation, pollution, forest fires, and so on are all examples of the suffering that our mother Earth has endured as a result of man's selfishness. The world we live in is facing numerous environmental challenges, from climate change to pollution to loss of biodiversity. It is our responsibility to take action and work towards a sustainable future for ourselves and generations to come.

We can start by making small changes in our daily lives, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and using environmentally friendly products. We can also support organisations and initiatives that work towards a greener world.

It is crucial for governments, businesses, and individuals to come together and take action on environmental issues. We need to prioritise the health of our planet and invest in solutions that will have a positive impact on the environment.

Let us take this World Environment Day as an opportunity to reflect on our actions and the impact they have on the environment. Let us make a commitment to protect and preserve the world we live in.

Mother Nature has always been more of a giver than a taker. She asks for nothing more than the care of the world in exchange for an abundance of resources. Mankind desires everything for the advancement of the metropolis. But they are unaware of the devastation of resources as a result of this. Thousands of trees are taken down every day, contributing to deforestation. Plastic pollution has harmed both land and sea. Every day, marine animals perish as a result of their consumption of plastics. Factories have polluted the air, making it dangerous for birds. All of these factors exist solely because humans prioritise profit over nature. Nobody knows the environmental consequences of the current scenario.

Given the global crisis, the United Nations General Assembly recognised June 5 as World Environment Day. This day is observed to provide an opportunity for us to reconsider our decisions about our environment and its resources.

The United Nations General Assembly convened the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment in 1972. This seminar also highlighted how bad our current environmental situation is. As a result, the 5 of June was proclaimed as Environment Day in order to raise awareness about the challenges. People from various countries get together and do everything in their power to safeguard our mother Earth. The leaders of several organisations meet to discuss certain ideas to implement in our surroundings.

Environment Day through the ages

The inaugural event of World Environment was organised in 1974 in the city of Spokane in the USA with the subject of "Only one Earth". Despite the fact that the event began in the United States in 1987, the notion of hosting this day in numerous nations was implemented.

In 2010, the event was hosted by Rwanda, with the theme of—One species, One Earth. In 2011, India was the host of this event and the subject was," Forest - Nature at your service". The United Nations wants to attract national and international attention to the issue of environmental degradation and climate change. In 2013, the event was hosted in Brazil, with the subject of, " Think. Eat and Save".

What can you do?

Despite the fact that the UN established a day entirely dedicated to our environment 50 years ago, the situation persists. Population growth, air and water pollution, climate change, food and fresh water scarcity have all increased over the years and are projected to continue. It is within our power as Earthlings to assist in this subject. We must aim for the new idea of preserving resources rather than destroying them for our own purpose. Ecosystem restoration has the potential to tackle thousands of problems associated with global warming. Planting trees, cleaning up the streets, not using plastics and putting them in water bodies, not driving, and not wasting food are some of the things you can do to help sustain our environment. Our duty is never tiring when it comes to saving our mother Earth. So, let's gather together and save the Environment by all means.
