George T. Doran, a consultant and former Director of Corporate Planning for Washington Water Power Company, first introduced the SMART acronym. He published a paper titled There’s a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives in November 1981.

Fast forward, the five rules or criteria known as SMART today serve as a psychological tool for increasing productivity . A SMART goal can foster a clear and mutual understanding of what constitutes expected performance levels and successful professional development, but also to achieve personal goals.

Six (6) W Questions for Specific Goals

A specific SMART goal is a solid base but worth almost nothing without the proper metrics in place. Setting metrics to determine whether a business will attain the goal and track progress makes the goal more tangible. Usually, this translates to numbers or customer/employee satisfaction.

A measurable goal usually answers questions, such as the following:

An example of a measurable goal: “ The sales department will improve my profits by 15% this year by increasing my marketing expenses by 5% in the domestic market “.

Note : A business can easily measure these indicators since they are expressed in numbers (revenues, expenses, profits) – these are quantitative measurements.

However, a measurable goal can take another form: “ The sales department will improve my profits by 15% this year by increasing customer satisfaction in the domestic market “.

The second refers to qualitative measurements that cannot be assessed as easily. An entity, in this case, will need to think in terms of customer feedback, testimonials, ratings, surveys, and so on. In the long term, customer satisfaction translates to customer/brand loyalty and increased profits. Still, these effects are difficult to quantify.

Can the business improve profits by 15% in a single year? Is this the reality of its niche (is it a fast-growing one, is there a demand for these products/services)?

On the other hand, does the entity have the needed capital and resources to increase expenses by 5%? Or will this decision harm its operation, in debt the company in the long-term, or harm its market position?

These, and a range of other questions, should be considered. A business might need to stretch its abilities, develop new skills, change attitudes, or identify previously overlooked opportunities. Still, they should be able to achieve the set goal promptly. If the goal turns out to be too optimistic, the team might think of other, more viable alternatives.

A single SMART goal statement should be consistent and make sense within the broader image and business mission . All of an entity’s departments should move in the same direction, or in other words, be aligned.

A relevant SMART goal answers the following questions:

The time-bound element in the goal is “this year”, so that there’s no need to expand the statement. Still, it would help to break down the deadline into shorter milestones since a year is pretty broad. A better alternative would be:

“ The sales department will improve my profits by 3% this month/quarter by … . “

A time-bound goal usually answers the following questions:

With a timeline, a business will rarely overlook the importance of a goal. With the lack of it, the company can easily commit to day-to-day activities or occurring crises and forget what should have been a priority in the first place.

20 Life Goals to Set for Yourself in 2024

There’s a lot of pressure around setting and achieving goals these days.

From big life goals down to small daily goals.  

This is especially true in the business world, where “ hustle and grind” culture makes us feel like there’s always something we need to be doing right now.  

But here’s a secret to setting life goals: you have to be true to yourself and what you really want out of life. Once you’ve tapped into what you want – and not what you think you should want – it all falls into place.  

So, how do you set good life goals and create a game plan to make them happen? What if you feel like you don’t have goals in life, or you don’t know the right direction to get there?  

That’s just what we’re getting into today.

What Are Life Goals?

Like the name suggests, life goals are goals to set for yourself over the course of your life. They’re definitely long-term – as they might actually take your whole life to achieve.

  Which is why it’s so important that you’re driven by a sense of passion and real desire. Feeling strongly toward your life goals is what gives you the fuel to take those steps every day.

How to Set Life Goals

Finding goals in life might seem like an intimidating task. Some might even say overwhelming.

There’s no shame in that. There are a lot of people who feel the same way (myself included at times!).

It all starts with some brainstorming. And a touch of dreaming and fantasizing.  

Here are a few steps you can take to come up with the best life goals for yourself:

  • Set up an idea dump worksheet. Sit down with your computer or a pen and paper. Write out a few categories that you might want to set life goals for, like your health, relationships, career, finances, hobbies, spirituality, and the like.
  • Do an idea dump. Put 30 minutes on a timer and write down as many life goal ideas as you can think of in the categories you listed. No idea is too big, small, or silly. Write down every single one now, and you can edit them later.
  • Narrow down the best ideas. Wait a day or two, then revisit your life goals list. Which ones do you want the most? Which ones set you on fire when you think about them, even if they’ll be hard to accomplish? Those are your best bet.
  • Build an action plan. Write out a rough plan for the steps you need to take to achieve those life goals. How long will it reasonably take? What are the major milestones or baby steps you need to take to reach the bigger goal? What do you have to do every week, month, year to stay on track?  

Now let’s look at some life goal ideas to help give you some fuel for your brainstorming session.

21 Goals to Set for Yourself

1.  run a half marathon.

I’ve met at least a few people who have this as a life goal. This is a great example of a life goal that takes real dedication, especially if you’re not a runner yet.

That’s because a half marathon is about 21 kilometers (13.1 miles). That’s a whole lotta miles. Training is something that needs to happen steadily, every day or several times a week. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. But the reward is as hefty as the commitment.

2.  Follow a vegan diet

“Going vegan” has gained a lot of traction lately. With reason: there are loads of benefits, like your health, the wellbeing of animals, and the environment. But this isn’t one of those simple life goals… if you love eating animal products like meat, cheese, and eggs, going vegan can feel incredibly hard.

A lot of people remedy this by taking it slow: first by cutting out some products, then cutting out others once you’re acclimated. If you look at it that way , a vegan diet can seem a lot more attainable.

3.  Start a business

Some people are fortunate enough to have a business opportunity knock on their door. Others have to work hard for it. But the good news is, starting a business is easier than ever. It’s also one of the best life goals you can set for yourself!

4.  Make a million dollars

This one seems like a really big dream, but a lot of entrepreneurs set this as a financial target. It’s an especially common life goal for people who own their own business, like a dropshipping store , consulting agency, or freelance business.  

When you make the rules about how your business runs, you can also make the rules about how money is made (and how much of it is made!).

5.  Earn a steady passive income

Do you fantasize about making money while you sleep? Or watching your bank account grow as you sip a mojito on a Caribbean beach? Passive income (also called residual income) is right up your alley.  

The best way to make this happen is to build an online business that doesn’t rely on you working 24/7. Selling online courses and other digital content can be a great path for this life goal.

6.  Find (and marry) your “soulmate”

This is one of the most common goals in life. We all want a storybook romance, don’t we? While this isn’t necessarily the kind of goal that requires a strict plan, it’s something that can be worked toward.

After all, relationships take commitment and understanding. You’ll have to make compromises and grow together as a team. This is one of those life goals that takes more work than it seems.  

7.  Own your dream home

Your home isn’t just a set of four walls and a roof. Owning the perfect property is one of the best life goals you can set because it means you get your own little slice of heaven. Nothing feels more reassuring than having the perfect place where you can feel comfortable and safe.

Saving for your dream home takes some time – but it’s one of the best aims in life. Not only do you get a place to call your own, but you get your foot on the property ladder too!  

8.  Own your dream car

Just like a home, your car is one of your most valuable possessions. Sure, it’s there for your grocery runs and getting you to and from work each day. However, a car is also freedom – a chance to take on the open road and discover amazing places.

Figure out what your dream car looks like and start putting a little cash towards those new wheels every day.

9. Have a positive impact on the world

The world is a different place because you’re part of it. There might be 8.03 billion people on this planet, but you’ve ever felt the glow of donating to charity or cherished the smile on a person’s face after a random act of kindness, you’ll know everyone counts.

Do your part to have a positive impact on the world in your own way. You can create a small non-profit organization, plant some trees, or just try to make someone smile every day.

9.  Conquer your fears

This is a tough one – but well worth the effort. Your ultimate goal in life should be to live without fear . Take the world as it comes and be prepared to deal with any eventuality. That starts with conquering your fears, one at a time.

Figure out which fears are holding you back right now and start to work on them. A little CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) and meditation could help with building your confidence here.

11. Master a second language

Mastering a second language is one of the most common goals in life. It gives you a new valuable skill that you can share with the people around you. Plus, having another language that you can speak means that you have more job and travel opportunities.

Choose the language you’d like to speak based on the opportunities it offers. If you’ve always wanted to visit China, maybe Chinese is the language for you.

12. Declutter your home

A cluttered home creates a cluttered mind. It’s easy to let clutter get on top of us these days. We shove things in cupboards and boxes to keep our homes tidy – but the clutter is still there, waiting to spill out.

Learn how to let go of the things you don’t want or need in your life anymore. If you haven’t used something in the last three months, and it doesn’t make you happy, donate it or throw it away.  

13. Rekindle an old relationship

Some relationships are better left in the past. You know which people have had a negative impact on your life. Some, however, could deliver a host of amazing benefits.  

Look through your past relationships and ask yourself who you lost touch with for no real reason. Reach out through a message or phone call and think whether re-igniting this relationship is important for you.

14. Sleep better

Sleep has a massive impact on how you think and feel. When it comes to short term goals in life, improving your sleep is one of the most valuable things you can do.

Start by improving your sleep hygiene. Create a schedule you can stick to, starting with a way to relax, like a hot bath or a cup of tea.

Remember that your bedroom should be cool, dark, and quiet to support good sleep. Keep any electronics outside if you can.

15. Plan for your child’s future

Your child is a continuation of yourself. While you can’t control what kind of person they become, one of the most positive goals in life is to try and help them reach their potential. Plan your child’s future by putting money away for their future education and helping them to find their talents.

Setting life goals doesn’t have to be just about doing things that benefit you. Your life goals can also center around your child’s happiness.  

16. Mentor someone

We all have unique skills and talents that we can share with the world. If you know how to do something well, whether it’s managing stress , or making money online , then you can share that knowledge with other people.

Mentoring someone is a wonderful way to pass your insights down through generations. Additionally, when you mentor someone, you also find opportunities to learn yourself. No matter where you are in life, you can usually find someone that looks up to you.

17. Become more mindful

Good life goals focus on helping you get the most out of your time on this earth. Living a fulfilling life means learning how to live in the present.

It’s easy to over-analyze our mistakes and stay focusing exclusively on the past. However, if you focus on what you regret too often, you forget to live in the present. Similarly, anxiously awaiting the future means that you don’t see the value in what you have now.

18. Do different things

One of the best goals to set in life is to expose yourself to as many different experiences as possible. As easy as it is to cling to your comfort zone, you should always be looking for ways to branch out and discover new experiences. Doing something new is a chance to discover the skills and talents that you never knew you had. It’s also a way to build relationships with new peoples you might meet and discover hobbies that make you happier.

19. Take more risks

Risks are something we often work hard to avoid, but sometimes they’re necessary. One of your life goals should be to look at ways to take more calculated risks in your life.

Think about something that could have a great impact on your life, but you’re currently too nervous to try. Could the benefits outweigh the risk? If so, this is the time to bite the bullet and jump in.   

20. Let go of the past

Finding goals in life can be easier than you’d think. Sometimes, the best way to improve your future is to learn how to let go of the past. While you can learn from the negative experiences you’ve had over the years, stop letting them hold you back.

Depending on your background, you may need some help to accomplish this goal. However, therapy and guidance exist to give you the direction you need.

21. Learn more

Learning doesn’t have to stop because you’ve finished your schooling. A commitment to long-term learning is one of the most effective and simple life goals for anyone interested in living a fulfilling life.

Try taking a new course every so often on the internet or at a local school near you. Look for opportunities to learn from other people or seek a mentor who can help you hone specific skills.

Dreams vs. Goals • Dream: series of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind • Goal: projected state of affairs that a person intends and plans to achieve • desired end-point of an undertaking • Notice these keywords: • projected, planned, undertaken • Dreams can lead to vision • Vision must lead to goals • Goals must lead to plans • Plans must be accomplished

Values vs. Goals • Our values influence how we make decisions and run our lives. • Values are not goals. Goals are targets. • Values are how you see the world, what you see as important, what you believe. • Values are how we express God’s teachings, how we approach life. • When we have strong values, and positive values, they will be integral to our achieving life goals.

Goals • Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve?  • Measurable: How will you know you are progressing? What are specific indicators? • Attainable: How much does it cost? How much time does it take? Do you have the resources to achieve your goal? If not, how are you going to obtain the resources?   • Realistic: Can you really reach that goal? Will it take you a lifetime to achieve your goal? What are the inhibitions? • Timed: When will you reach your goal? Are there sub-goals? Determine a completion date for each.

Goals and Planning • Many people go through life wishing that something exciting or new will happen.  • The only way to change the results of your life is to change the way you live it.  • By setting up your goals, you are setting up the road map to your success.  • When things get tough (and they will), review this map to keep yourself on track. • Above all, do not just sit around waiting for your ship to come in. • “Luck” favors the well informed and the well prepared, those who live active lives.

Do not Envy Others. • Easy to look at others who have achieved what we have and feel a deep sense of envy or even resentment. • Focusing on achievements and processes of others can quickly turn into jealousy. • Learn from others but what works for one does not mean it will work for you. • Enjoy knowing your journey is unique and special to you.

7 Thoughts on Setting Goals (5/7) Don't Give Up too Soon. • Often times the difference between successful goal setting and utter ruin is just that tiny extra bit of persistence. • It is stunning to see how often success is just on the other side of a failure. • Recognize setbacks in the road for what they are - opportunities for you to shine in the face of adversity. • Do not listen to nay-sayers who only want to hold you back.

7 Thoughts on Setting Goals (6/7) Our Biggest Dreams Should Haunt Us. • It is a thought that will never quite go away. • It is around every corner, giving us subtle reminders, waiting for us to get on it and do it. • Embrace this feeling, because it will push you. • You will expend more energy doing nothing, by getting down on yourself for not doing it, than actually achieving your goals. • Interesting thing about working towards our goals is that it does not really feel like work after a little while.

7 Thoughts on Setting Goals (7/7) Evaluate Your Process and Progress. • Constantly strive to see what is working, and what is not. • Do not restrain yourself from tweaking things that are not working as well as you would like. (Recall that nothing is perfect) • Expand where you are doing things well. • Set a weekly or monthly reminder to go over your progress and readjust where necessary.

Goals and Accomplishment • Dream big but be practical • Can not always get there directly • Need to map out the road • Pick a major goal • What pieces have to come together? • These are sub-goals • Repeat for each sub-goal • Until basic work unit is defined • For each work unit • who will do what by when? • what do they need to get that done? • Manage so that each work unit gets completed

Focus on Priorities • Apply solid time management • Do the difficult tasks when you are the sharpest. • Learn to say "No“. Do not let red-herrings distract you. • Reward yourself for effective results. • Gain cooperation from people who benefit from your efforts. • Create win-win situations to achieve mutual success. • Don't procrastinate. Attend to necessary things immediately. • Have a positive attitude. • Be realistic in your approach in achieving your goals. • Do not necessarily be discouraged when “wiser” people tell you something can not be done or that you are not capable of the goal. • Do no let yourself be trapped in a culture of failure. • Reality rules. -- Strive for well-considered balance between dictates of reality and urge to achieve.

How to Kill Goals and Priorities • Store information in your head • Failing to stick to priorities • Underestimate the time a task will require • No planning or poor planning • Not using a calendar to track schedule • Multitasking – Too many tasks at same time • Lack of effective systems and processes • Failure to track progress and adapt as needed • Allow social media to drive day's activities • Disorganized, cluttered desk/office • Not saying "NO" when necessary

Goal Setting: Personal Example • Assigned to a new branch to assist • no experience in management at this time • Asked to take over branch after two weeks • In another two weeks, asked what my branch did within the organization • Realized why past branch chief was fired • Realized I did not know the answer to what my branch did, in specific terms • Realized I had better find out • GOAL: Keep myself from also being fired • PROBLEM: Find out what my branch did

Goal Setting: Personal Example • GATHERED DATA • financial records existed on what projects my people were billing for • asked to see those records • APPLIED DATA • made my own continually-updated database of past year’s billings (very new for that time) • sorted records in various ways • MADE FACTS EVIDENT • what projects each person billed for • what projects supported by my branch • percentage of time supporting projects

Goal Setting: Personal Example • CAME TO REALIZATION • branch billing only 30% of time to projects • 70% of time billed to overhead, killing profits • very very bad situation, branch about to die • MADE RECOMMENDATION • no more billing to overhead • all time must be applied to contracted projects • RESULT • recommendation accepted • branch doubled in size • got promoted instead of fired

Goal Setting: Personal Example • Downside Happens • Expect It – Deal With It • financial people upset that I reported their data • assured them that I was not trying to do their job • showed I was not changing the data, just sorting it • they ended up liking what I did • branch personnel did not like policy change • showed them how they would lose their freedom if not their jobs if they did not cooperate • gave them every support for what they did • was even able to add additional personnel to help with workload • our number of projects almost tripled

Goal Setting: Personal Example • Downside Happens • Expect It – Deal With It • other divisions lost their power over my branch and its personnel • they considerably increased pressure to maintain control without affect • I did not just play defense • executives did not want to interfere with success • told me that they did not [want to] know what I was doing but to keep doing whatever I was doing • they enjoyed the additional profits and customers • only those who fail to succeed were disgruntled

Goal Setting: Personal Example • Takes Risk • Expect It – Manage It Well • lots of complaints that I was not following policy and regulations • no complaints from anyone who mattered • told complainers that profit from paying customers was my top priority • explained that “policy” and “regulation” did not appear in my job description • even threatened slander suit when rumors of my conducting illegal activity began circulating • exposed complainers to their own high-risk situation • nobody wanted to be outed to the organization

Goal Setting: Personal Example • In the end, all was well • promoted instead of fired • people in my branch said that the branch would be closed when I was reassigned because nobody would do what I had done • turned out to be true • all my people still had jobs within the organization • gained reputation as someone you go to when you really do want to accomplish something • Found that early stress and effort can lead to later relaxation and an easier path

Be Encouraged … if thou be diligent, thy harvest shall come as a fountain, and want shall flee far from thee. (Proverbs 12:24) This therefore hath seemed good to me, that a person should eat and drink, and enjoy the fruits of their labor, wherewith they hath labored under the sun, all the days of their life which God hath given them, and this is their portion. (Sirach 5:17) Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before obscure people. (Proverbs 22:29) If you get labeled as a black sheep, so be it. Stick to your guns, your dreams and ambitions. Do not let anyone talk you out of what you truly believe. Such enthusiasm is the sustaining power of all great actions. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation.
