Current Clinical Trials
What is a clinical trial.
A clinical trial helps researchers at University Health learn whether a new test or treatment is safe and effective. Clinical trials can be designed to help prevent, detect or treat diseases.
Some trials are aimed at evaluating a new kind of medicine or dosage. Others focus on medical devices or managing other factors in the course of your treatment. All clinical trials help advance knowledge and improve medical care.
What You Should Know about Clinical Trials
Participating in a clinical trial is voluntary. Your provider may recommend that you try a new approach to your treatment. Or you may have a condition that fits what researchers are studying. You should always know that your participation in a clinical trial is completely up to you.
To join a clinical trial, you’ll have to meet certain criteria that determine if you can participate. These standards are usually based on factors like age, gender and your medical history.
Also, each trial has a protocol, or a study plan that’s carefully designed to outline details like how long the trial will last, the schedule of tests or procedures, and medications and dosages. Protocols help you know more about what to expect and whether you’d like to participate.

3-year-old 'Dr. David' celebrates National Doctors Day at Baptist Medical Center
by SBG San Antonio Staff
SAN ANTONIO - Doctors at Baptist Medical Center downtown got a surprise visit and extra special thank you for National Doctors Day from a tiny tyke who admires them and wants to be like them when he grows up.
Meet 3-year-old “Dr. David,” Montanez, the grandson of Angelica Montanez, who is a social worker at Baptist Medical Center downtown. Little David came to “work” already dressed for success and made the rounds at the hospital today!
He handed out healthy snacks and thank-you notes to all the doctors he met on his way. His presence put smiles on the faces of everyone he met.
National Doctors’ Day is commonly celebrated in healthcare organizations, as a day to recognize the contributions of doctors and to show appreciation for the pivotal role doctors play in maintaining and enhancing the health of our community. The 2024 National Doctors’ Day theme was “Wings & Stethoscopes: Healers of Hope."
With National Doctors’ Day on March 30, little David reminds us that doctors and healthcare heroes, like those who help save lives every day at Baptist Medical Center, are true role models. Grandma Angelica is proud that her grandson, David, admires her and her colleagues at Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Sowjanya Mohan, Chief Medical Officer at Baptist Health System, said she and the team look forward to the future when David may someday join the Baptist team of doctors.
Doctors’ Day was officially established on March 30, 1991, when President George Bush proclaimed the observance of the day. March 30 also marks the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long in 1842.

Man in critical condition after being shot in face inside East Side home, SAPD says
Incident occurred just after 2 a.m. in 2500 block of indian forest.
Ben Spicer , Digital Journalist
SAN ANTONIO – One man is in the hospital in critical condition and another has been detained following a shooting inside an East Side home early Wednesday morning, according to San Antonio police.
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. at a home in the 2500 block of Indian Forest, not far from both Binz Engleman Road and North Foster Road.
According to police, the man was able to get inside the home via the front door, by using a keycode. That’s when, police say, the man went upstairs while the other was coming out of a room with a gun and he shot the man in the face.
Police said the man shot was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where at last check, he’s listed in critical condition. The shooter was detained by officers for questioning.
At this time, it is not exactly clear as to why the man entered the home and police did not say if there was a prior relationship between the two men.
The San Antonio Police Department, the San Antonio Fire Department and EMS all responded to the call.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, police said.
