Distance Ph.D. students are required to conduct the same level of scholarly research as on-campus students. This requirement can only be met by a student who is already immersed in research as part of their employment at a national laboratory or industry research development center, for example. In all cases, the research scope, access to resources (experimental or computational facilities, software, literature/library resources and technical advisement resources), and the faculty committee chair (ideally the entire thesis committee) will all be planned and agreed upon prior to the student’s admission.

Research advising will be conducted by the faculty chair/co-chair via face-to-face meetings and through emails and web-conference meetings. If there is an on-site committee member (for example, the student’s employer), regular research advising will take place face-to-face. Online Ph.D. students must make at least one annual visit to campus to interact with other students, including those in other doctoral programs. This can occur in the following ways:

  • Visit College Station for a period of time to engage other students in the research group on campus
  • Attend a conference/workshop where other students are presenting or attending.

Columbia University offers three high-quality engineering doctorates in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and earth and environmental engineering. All three programs are hybrid, meaning students complete some coursework online and other coursework in person. Along with taking some courses in person, students complete a dissertation under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, and these meetings usually take place on campus. Students typically complete all online coursework in the first year of their degree and then start on their dissertation. This makes it possible to have two 100% online semesters. To apply for any of the three concentrations, students must already have a master's degree in the field of study or a related field. Previous work or research experience also makes a candidate more competitive.

Coursework for this degree covers subjects such as network communication and the Internet of Things. With both degrees, students must complete a dissertation in the field of study. The dissertation and all coursework can be completed virtually. Most class sessions and research meetings are synchronous. Unlike many other doctorate programs, coursework is taken on an accelerated basis, meaning students graduate in two to three years. The first year is considered the classroom phase. The second and third years are the research phase, where students work on their praxis paper (DEng) or dissertation (PhD) with guidance from a faculty member.

The school’s online PhD in engineering is more theoretical and prepares students for a career in academia and tenure track positions. The PhD requires research and a dissertation defense, while the DEng requires a one-year professional internship. Penn State’s program is unique in that it allows a lot of customization; students can fulfill their 15 elective credit hours from 20 multidisciplinary course options (e.g., homeland security, geodesign, data analytics). Instead of quitting your job and moving to your program’s campus, you can earn a PhD or DEng completely online, mostly from the comfort of home. Below are just two of many benefits to an online doctorate in engineering.

  • Flexibility and convenience . Online doctorate in engineering programs are usually presented in one of two formats: synchronous (live classes via Zoom or another platform) or asynchronous (students watch lectures and complete coursework on their own schedule). Fully online

Many doctoral programs are available in a completely online format, meaning students attend lectures remotely (over Zoom or a similar platform) and communicate with the professor via email or phone. Some programs also require an in-person residency. This may range from a two-day orientation to a two-week (or longer) summer seminar.

Blended/hybrid

This format combines elements of both online and in-person programs. Some classes may be remote, while others may be in person. This type of program can offer the best of both formats: the flexibility of an online program with the interaction and networking of an in-person experience.

PhD vs. DEng: Which Online Engineering Doctorate is Right for You?

Engineering programs offer two types of doctoral degrees. PhDs are generally more theoretical in nature and prepare students for careers in academia. Engineering PhD and Doctorate Timelines

The time it takes to complete a PhD or DEng varies depending on the individual and the program. Some programs can be accelerated (particularly those with online formats) and a motivated student with a foundation of master’s coursework may be able to finish a doctoral program in as little as three years. Part-time students, especially those who are working full time, may need a full seven years to complete their research and defend their dissertation (or final project). Many universities have time limits on their PhD and DEng programs, so it’s important to plan appropriately. 

First-year students often begin with core courses that focus on the program’s specific learning outcomes. Students also explore electives to assist them in narrowing down an area of research. Some online doctorate in engineering programs have in-person orientations or residencies during the first year.

Students continue to take courses focused on their research interests and should have a dedicated faculty advisor. Qualifying (also called candidacy) exams are usually taken at the end of the second year. Full-time students may be required to serve as teaching assistants for undergraduate classes. Students should begin to assemble their dissertation committee.

In the third year, students complete their qualifying exams if they haven’t already done so. They also meet with their dissertation committee to finalize their research topic and begin writing a formal proposal. Full-time students may begin writing their dissertation and may be expected to present at academic conferences. Students also prepare to take their comprehensive exams.

The trajectory of the fourth year largely depends on if the student is full- or part-time. Full-time students should be wrapping up writing their dissertation and preparing to defend it. Part-time students will be focused on the writing process. Depending on the program, some DEng students may be working on a capstone project rather than a dissertation.

Each PhD and DEng program has different requirements and prerequisites. Depending on your personal and professional goals, your own timeline may be longer or shorter. Be sure to discuss specific benchmarks and special requirements with your academic or faculty advisor so you know what to expect.

Learning Outcomes of Engineering Doctoral Programs

Almost all institutions structure their doctoral programs based on expected learning outcomes. These are statements describing the knowledge and skills students are expected to master by the completion of the program. Learning outcomes guide students throughout their study and result in a set of common outcomes for graduates. Each program has its own specific learning outcomes, which vary depending on whether the program is a PhD or DEng. However, in general students can expect the following:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of engineering and science fundamentals. By the completion of the program, doctoral students should have an expert grasp of engineering, math, and science principles and the skills to apply this learning to real-world problems. 
  • Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in a chosen specialty that meets or exceeds expert level. Beyond broad engineering principles, doctoral students choose a specialization and, through original research, contribute to further knowledge in the field. 
  • Conduct original and independent research. In addition to critical review of the existing literature, students come up with their own questions and eventual solutions for issues in the engineering field. PhDs typically focus on publishing in academic journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Identify and solve engineering problems and contribute to innovation and real-world problem solving. This real-world application is especially relevant for DEng graduates working on a capstone project/praxis rather than a dissertation. 
  • Communicate effectively and clearly both orally and through writing. Regardless of the type of program or school, doctoral students will be expected to write and speak at an expert level. U.S.-based PhD and DEng programs require a mastery of English; international students need a specific score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam.

You can choose from numerous areas for specialization within an engineering doctorate. What you choose will likely depend on your strengths and interests. Think about what electives inspire you and spark interest. Do you enjoy leading a team of people? Or do you see yourself immersed in solo lab work? Is there a specific industry you’re focusing on for future career prospects (e.g., aerospace)? The following specializations represent a few examples in the engineering field. 

Engineering Management

This specialization combines technology problem solving with managerial and administrative skills. Both large and small organizations benefit from the expertise of a manager well versed in the field.

Systems Engineering

A systems engineer designs and manages complex systems over their life cycles. From spacecraft to software chip design, systems engineers use an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving.

Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineers focus on the study and application of three areas: electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism. They might design or develop communications systems or electric motors.

Industrial Engineering

Accreditation for Online Engineering Doctorates

Choosing an accredited online doctoral degree in engineering is important because it certifies the quality of the program and ensures your time, money, and effort result in the stated learning outcomes (e.g., graduates from two different accredited DEng programs should be at the same level). Attending a properly accredited program also is important so your credits transfer if needed and so you have access to the full range of financial aid options. For example, only students at accredited schools are eligible for federal financial aid. Accreditation is an independent evaluation attesting to the quality and rigor of the education, and it shows potential employers that you’re a qualified job candidate.

All doctoral students are advised to attend an institution accredited by an organization recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation or the Department of Education. Look for a university with regional accreditation, which means it meets the highest educational standards. A few examples of regional accreditation organizations include the Higher Learning Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accredits STEM programs at the bachelor’s and master’s level, but currently there is no specific accrediting organization for doctoral programs. For fully online or hybrid programs, ensure that the university’s on-campus program is accredited.

Applying to an Online PhD or DEng Grad Program

When applying to a graduate or doctoral program, you can expect several standard application components such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, written statement or essay, and GRE scores. Each school has its own application checklist, so be sure to follow the instructions regarding what’s required and how to submit materials. Applicants to doctoral programs in engineering may also need to complete the following.

  • Interview: Many doctoral programs require a virtual or in-person interview. This helps the program learn about the applicant’s academic history, interests, and professional goals. Through a one-on-one interview, the department determines if the applicant is prepared for the rigors of the program and, likewise, the applicant gets a better sense of if the program will be a good fit.
  • Scholarly Writing Sample: A common learning outcome for doctoral programs is excellent communication skills. Students are often required to synthesize their research in a written dissertation and present papers at academic conferences. Stanford Engineering has been offering Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) for five years. The online courses are taught by Stanford faculty and are highly interactive. 

For on-campus students

Many Stanford faculty have developed "flipped” or “blended” courses for their students. This involves videotaping lecture material and asking students to watch it on their own time, in advance, so that traditional classroom lecture time can be used for more interactive learning. The highest-quality education still requires this face-to-face contact between and among students and faculty.

For off-campus students who are registered with Stanford in some way

Building on current offerings such as those in the Stanford Center for Professional Development , Stanford will continue exploring options for enrolling at-a-distance students in Stanford academic programs. Online learning also has the potential to expand offerings for Stanford students who are away from campus for a quarter at an overseas study location.

For students at other colleges and universities

Another avenue is sharing licensed online coursework with other colleges and universities. These can be full courses or, in many cases, shorter modules. For instance, a computer science course at one university could incorporate an online module on cryptography or database design taught by a world-class expert in that specialty at another university.

For MOOC students

Stanford faculty are continuing to put some courses online, broadly available to the public, as part of Stanford’s interest in expanding educational access everywhere. MOOCs cannot replicate the quality of the on-campus Stanford experience, but they can incorporate variations of some on-campus features into the online environment (such as discussions sections and office hours). This fundamental course provides students with the basic knowledge required to understand a typical 2D 3D seismic processing workflow. This covers the processing sequence, parameter selection and how to design and handle a seismic processing project. Prerequisite: Background/knowledge of Petrophysics. S, even years.

PTRE 571. Petroleum Geostatistics. 3 Credits.

The reservoir data including porosity and permeability follow the spatial statistics as there is a dependency between the data depending on their distance and position with respect to each other. This course presents the fundamental of spatial statistics with several case examples in Petroleum Engineering. Prerequisite: Background/knowledge of Calculus-based Statistics. F, even years.

How it Works

Master of science in engineering management:.

The distance education Master of Science in Engineering Management is uniquely offered in an executive format, with classes delivered through live and recorded sessions that occur once a month, generally on a consecutive Friday and Saturday.  Interactive delivery sites include:

  • Lowcountry Graduate Center in Charleston, SC
  • University Center of Greenville, SC
  • University of South Carolina, Columbia SC

Attendance at one of these sites is encouraged, but is not required. Our students are completing classes in this program all over the country and when they travel abroad.

All other programs:

All other College of Engineering and Computing distance education programs are offered in a more traditional format. Classes run either over an 8-week or 14-week term. We use a combination of streaming video, web conferencing, content management systems, and other technologies to deliver our classes in ways that help you learn, wherever you are. The pacing of online lectures and learning activities is generally guided by the professor. Often, you will be getting the exact same lecture as the students located on campus.

How to Apply

Admissions are competitive, particularly for graduate programs that include a research-based thesis or dissertation. Admissions criteria are the same for distance education and on-campus students, and are established by each program. Course overview.

The Distance Learning PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering has the same level of challenge as the on-site PhD study. The difference is that the research topic must be set in the way that the research is done remotely. The remote postgraduate research assumes that no work can be done in person in the laboratory including fabrication, characterisation, and experiment set-up. If the research topic involves fabrication, characterisation, and experiment set-up, the PhD study must be conducted in-person in order to be physically present in the laboratory or the cleanroom. The remote postgraduate research is likely to be using commercial software tools, open-source software, or in-house developed software, even other remotely performed research work can be envisaged depending on the ideas of a supervisor. Some practical design and test work can be done at home if the parts can be purchased online or delivered by post.

The Distance Learning PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering has these requirements for distance learning PhD students:

  • A strict attendance of regular meetings with your supervisor - minimum once a month
  • Remote participation in the research-related activities at the faculty and at the school, including regular monthly PhD research seminars and the university/faculty/school/department organised research events
  • Demonstration of a solid internet connection for the duration of PhD study
  • Operating post or delivery service at the location of the PhD study

Entry Requirements

How you are Supervised

Your supervisor will:

  • Help you develop your research plan in the early stages of your PhD
  • Advise on research aims and objectives and suggest relevant training or skills courses
  • Provide direction in terms of relevant literature and sources
  • Give guidance on gathering, recording and analysing data
  • Supervise your written work, providing constructive criticism and ensuring you keep to deadlines
  • Support and advise you when it comes to presenting papers at conferences, publishing your work and attending your viva (the final oral examination of your thesis)

The program includes a limited residency requirement: Students must complete a course in contemporary research in management on campus, during which they take a qualifying exam. The degree requires 54 to 66 credits, and students can graduate within three years.

All students must also complete a dissertation and an oral defense of their work. The program costs $950 per credit for both in-state and out-of-state learners. Retired and active duty military receive a tuition discount.

Private universities, including NU and Capitol Tech, tend to cost more than public schools. Over the course of a typical three-year Ph.D. program, this translates to about $61,000. This roughly matches Capitol Tech’s tuition, while NU offers a more affordable program.

While a Ph.D. might help you land a lucrative role in the long run, the upfront investment is still significant. Make sure to fill out the FAFSA ® to access federal student aid. This application is the gateway to opportunities like scholarships, grants and loans. You can pursue similar opportunities through schools and nonprofit organizations.

Accreditation for Online Ph.D.s in Data Science

There are two important types of college accreditation to consider: institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is essential; it involves vetting schools to ensure the quality of their finances, academics, and faculty, among other areas. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and U.S. Department of Education oversee the regional agencies that administer this process.

You should only enroll at institutionally accredited schools. Otherwise, you will be ineligible for federal financial aid. You can check a school’s accreditation status on its website or by visiting the directory on CHEA’s website .

Individual departments and degrees earn programmatic accreditation based on their curriculum, faculty and learner outcomes. However, this process has not been widely established for data science programs, so it shouldn’t make or break your enrollment decision. However, you can still keep an eye out for accreditation from the Data Science Council of America (DASCA).

The research describes the e-learning online platforms such as MS Teams, BigBlueButton, Zoom and Rostov State Transport Online University which have the same characteristics of the content and functions for conducting the scientific conferences, designing the project, working in a team and consequently, providing educational process. The purpose of this research paper is to analyze different e-learning platforms, to compare their functions, to underline pros and cons of distant learning and to survey the students` online platform preferences. At the development of the distance technologies and appearance of the online platforms, the aim for teaching staff is to organize the educational process using e-learning online platforms as the additional tool for different purposes. Moreover, there are many questions related to methods of measuring online learning effectiveness, as it provides an opportunity for continuous learning and improvement of the professional activities. Convincingly, the education system is changing and developing according to the human needs. The application of the most suitable MS Teams, BigBlueButton, Zoom and Rostov State Transport Online University platforms for implementing the educational process and mastering the necessary competencies is considered in this paper. The benefits and drawbacks of using them in the educational process are described.

Nii O. Attoh-Okine, Ph.D., is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Delaware and an expert in the application of statistical analysis to infrastructure application; probability graphical models; computational and large scale infrastructure data analysis. He has extensive experience in the application of statistical analysis and probability theory in the areas of Application of Mathematical Statistics to Large Scale Infrastructure Data, with application to highways, and railways. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and a Diplom Ingineur from the Rostov Institute of Civil Engineering in Russia. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Kansas and editor of numerous textbooks and journals, such as ASCE and IEEE journals, as well as author of numerous technical papers in his areas of expertise. Dr. Attoh-Okine’s recently published book is Big Data and Differential Privacy: Analysis Strategies for Railway Track Engineering , John Wiley Publishers [May 2016].

Joseph W. Palese, MCE, PE, is a senior scientist and program manager for the Railroad Engineering and Safety Program at the University of Delaware. He has over 28 years of experience in track component design and analysis, failure analysis and component life forecasting algorithm specifications, and development of inspection systems. Throughout his career, Mr. Palese has focused on acquiring and utilizing large amounts of track component condition data for planning railway maintenance activities.

Mr. Palese has a bachelor’s degree of civil engineering, and a master’s degree of civil engineering, both from the University of Delaware, along with an MBA from Rowan University. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in civil engineering at the University of Delaware. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of New Jersey.

Allan M. Zarembski , PhD, P.E., FASME, Hon. Mbr. of AREMA joined the University of Delaware faculty as research professor and founding director of UD’s Railroad Engineering and Safety Program in 2012. An internationally recognized authority in the fields of track and vehicle/track system analysis, railway component failure analysis, track strength, and maintenance planning, Dr. Zarembski founded and served as president of ZETA-TECH Associates, Inc., a technical consulting and applied technology company in 1984, now an independent business unit of Harsco Rail. Prior to that, he had served in research and development positions with Pandrol, Inc. and Speno Rail Services Co., and was manager of track research for the Association of American Railroads. He has also served as deputy director of the ASME’s Track Train Dynamics Program, and has presented numerous railroad engineering short courses throughout the U.S.

Author or co-author of more than 170 technical papers, 120 technical articles, and two books published by Simmons Boardman Books , Dr. Zarembski’s work and expertise have been recognized with numerous honors, including being named an honorary member of AREMA, and receiving both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Rail Transportation Award in 1992, and the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration’s Special Act Award in 2001. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and is a registered Professional Engineer in five states. Dr. Zarembski earned the MA and PhD in Civil Engineering from Princeton University, and the MS in Engineering Mechanics and BS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from New York University.
