EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable. 

Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research

EBSCO Open Dissertations is a collaboration between EBSCO and BiblioLabs to increase traffic and discoverability of ETD research. You can join the movement and add your theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to your institutional repository. 

EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Your ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to your IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

Searching for & Ordering a copy of a Princeton University Undergraduate Senior Theses

The Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library is the central repository for Princeton University undergraduate senior theses from 1924 to the present.

• Members of the University community with an active NetID can access digital theses in Dataspace when connected to any Princeton-networked computer (if you’re not on campus, please first connect to the campus network via the GlobalProtect or SonicWall desktop applications).
• Independent researchers who are not members of the University community (including Princeton alumni) should use DataSpace to browse senior theses. Please create a Special Collections Research Account prior to submitting the Senior Thesis Order Form. In some cases we will be unable to digitize the senior thesis due to an embargo that prohibits digital access. Copyright of the theses are held by the author.

Searching for & Ordering a copy of a Princeton University Ph.D. Dissertation or Master's Theses

All researchers, prior to contacting Mudd Library, should search the following platforms for the dissertation they are in need of: 

For Princeton Ph.D. Dissertations from 2011 - present, please search and access via the Dataspace repository for Princeton University Doctoral Dissertations . These are accessible to everyone for free, regardless of Princeton University association.

To obtain Princeton Ph.D. Dissertations from 2010 and earlier, if you are associated with an institution that has a ProQuest Library Subscription, the dissertation may be available to download for free through the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global search .

If a circulating copy is available via the Princeton University Catalog , those within the United States and Canada who have access to a local Interlibrary Loan service (ILL ) or Borrow Direct can request physical delivery through their library. 

If you are not associated with an institution with a ProQuest Library Subscription, you can purchase the dissertation through ProQuest Dissertation Express .

For Master’s Theses search the Princeton University Library Catalog and contact Mudd Library to discuss digitization of the original.

If the dissertation is unavailable in any of the above platforms, please contact Mudd Library to discuss digitization of the original. Mudd Library is only able to digitize those that are out of copyright or unavailable via ProQuest. In some cases we will be unable to digitize the dissertation due to an embargo placed by the student that prohibits digital access. If this is the case, the dissertation can only be viewed in the Mudd Library Reading Room after placing a request via the Princeton University Catalog . Copyright of the dissertations are held by the author.

• DASH , Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard, is the university's central, open-access repository for the scholarly output of faculty and the broader research community at Harvard.  Most Ph.D. dissertations submitted from  March 2012 forward  are available online in DASH.
• Check HOLLIS, the Library Catalog, and refine your results by using the   Advanced Search   and limiting Resource  Type   to Dissertations
• Search the database  ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global Don't hesitate to  Ask a Librarian  for assistance.

UC Policy on Open Access for Theses and Dissertations

On March 25, 2020, the University of California issued a Policy on Open Access for Theses and Dissertations. The systemwide policy, which aligns with those already in place at individual UC campuses, “requires theses or dissertations prepared at the University to be (1) deposited into an open access repository, and (2) freely and openly available to the public, subject to a requested delay of access (“embargo”) obtained by the student.” Theses and dissertations already made open access can be read in eScholarship, UC’s open access repository and scholarly publishing platform.

Alexandria Digital Research Library (ADRL) 

Some UCSB open access theses and disserations are in ADRL. Due to copyright restrictions and a need to obtain permission from the authors, not all years are available.

eScholarship   

UC's institutional repository and journal publishing platform. Not all campuses have electronic theses and disseartations in eScholarship. Due to copyright restrictions and the need to obtain permissions from authors, not all years are available online. UC campuses began accepting electronic theses and disserations (ETDs) submissions different years. For details see  ETD Preservation and Access Sevice: California Digital Library . UCSB's open access ETDS are in  ADRL . 

Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations

An international organization dedicated to promoting the adoption, creation, use, dissemination, and preservation of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). The website includes resources on how to find, create, and preserve ETDs; how to set up an ETD program; legal and technical questions; and the latest news and research in the ETD community.

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

OATD.org aims to be the best possible resource for finding open access graduate theses and dissertations published around the world. Metadata (information about the theses) comes from over 1100 colleges, universities, and research institutions. OATD currently indexes 5,031,307 theses and dissertations.

PQDT Open (Proquest):

Provides the full text of open access dissertations and theses free of charge. The authors of these dissertations and theses have opted to publish as open access.

This guide provides information on searching for theses of Cambridge PhDs and for theses of UK universities and universities abroad. 

For information and guidance on depositing your thesis as a cambridge phd, visit the cambridge office of scholarly communication pages on theses here ., this guide gives essential information on how to obtain theses using the british library's ethos service. .

On the last weekend of October, the British Library became the victim of a major cyber-attack. Essential digital services including the BL catalogue, website and online learning resources went dark, with research services like the EThOS collection of more than 600,000 doctoral theses suddenly unavailable. The BL state that they anticipate restoring more services in the next few weeks, but disruption to certain services is now expected to persist for several months. University of Cambridge theses

Finding a cambridge phd thesis online via the institutional repository.

The University's institutional repository, Apollo , holds full-text digital versions of over 11,000 Cambridge PhD theses and is a rapidly growing collection deposited by Cambridge Ph.D. graduates. Theses in Apollo can be browsed via this link . More information on how to access theses by University of Cambridge students can be found on the access to Cambridge theses webpage.   The requirement for impending PhD graduates to deposit a digital version in order to graduate means the repository will be increasing at a rate of approximately 1,000 per year from this source.   About 200 theses are added annually through requests to make theses Open Access or via requests to digitize a thesis in printed format.

Locating and obtaining a copy of a Cambridge PhD thesis (not yet available via the repository)

Theses can be searched in iDiscover .  Guidance on searching for theses in iDiscover can be found here .   Requests for consultation of printed theses, not available online, should be made at the Manuscripts Reading Room (Email:  [email protected] Telephone: +44 (0)1223 333143).   Further information on the University Library's theses, dissertations and prize essays collections can be consulted at this link .

Researchers can order a copy of an unpublished thesis which was deposited in print form either through the Library’s  Digital Content Unit via the image request form , or, if the thesis has been digitised, it may be available in the Apollo repository. Copies of theses may be provided to researchers in accordance with the  law  and in a manner that is common across UK libraries.  The law allows us to provide whole copies of unpublished theses to individuals as long as they sign a declaration saying that it is for non-commercial research or private study.

How to make your thesis available online through Cambridge's institutional repository

Are you a Cambridge alumni and wish to make your Ph.D. thesis available online? You can do this by depositing it in Apollo the University's institutional repository. Click here for further information on how to proceed.    Current Ph.D students at the University of Cambridge can find further information about the requirements to deposit theses on the Office of Scholarly Communication theses webpages.

UK Theses and Dissertations

Electronic copies of Ph.D. theses submitted at over 100 UK universities are obtainable from EThOS , a service set up to provide access to all theses from participating institutions. It achieves this by harvesting e-theses from Institutional Repositories and by digitising print theses as they are ordered by researchers using the system. Over 250,000 theses are already available in this way. Please note that it does not supply theses submitted at the universities of Cambridge or Oxford although they are listed on EThOS.

Registration with EThOS is not required to search for a thesis but is necessary to download or order one unless it is stored in the university repository rather than the British Library (in which case a link to the repository will be displayed). Many theses are available without charge on an Open Access basis but in all other cases, if you are requesting a thesis that has not yet been digitised you will be asked to meet the cost. Once a thesis has been digitised it is available for free download thereafter.

When you order a thesis it will either be immediately available for download or writing to hard copy or it will need to be digitised. If you order a thesis for digitisation, the system will manage the process and you will be informed when the thesis is available for download/preparation to hard copy.

World-wide (incl. UK) theses and dissertations

Electronic versions of non-UK theses may be available from the institution at which they were submitted, sometimes on an open access basis from the institutional repository. A good starting point for discovering freely available electronic theses and dissertations beyond the UK is the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) , which facilitates searching across institutions. Information can also usually be found on the library web pages of the relevant institution.

The DART Europe etheses portal lists several thousand full-text theses from a group of European universities.

The University Library subscribes to the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses  (PQDT) database which from August 31 2023 is accessed on the Web of Science platform.  To search this index select it from the Web of Science "Search in" drop-down list of databases (available on the Documents tab on WoS home page)

PQDT includes 2.4 million dissertation and theses citations, representing 700 leading academic institutions worldwide from 1861 to the present day. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full text coverage for older graduate works. Each dissertation published since July 1980 includes a 350-word abstract written by the author. Master's theses published since 1988 include 150-word abstracts.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The University Library only subscribes to the abstracting & indexing version of the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database and NOT the full text version.  A fee is payable for ordering a dissertation from this source.   To obtain the full text of a dissertation as a downloadable PDF you can submit your request via the University Library Inter-Library Loans department (see contact details below). NB this service is only available to full and current members of the University of Cambridge.

Alternatively you can pay yourself for the dissertation PDF on the PQDT platform. Link from Web of Science record display of any thesis to PQDT by clicking on "View Details on ProQuest".  On the "Preview" page you will see an option "Order a copy" top right.  This will allow you to order your own copy from ProQuest directly.

Dissertations and theses submitted at non-UK universities may also be requested on Inter-Library Loan through the Inter-Library Loans department (01223 333039 or 333080, [email protected] )

How do I access University of Chicago Dissertations?

Many of our recent dissertations are open access works, available in Knowledge@UChicago , our digital repository. Current University of Chicago users can access almost all recent dissertations through ProQuest Dissertations & Theses @ University of Chicago , including those that are not available in Knowledge@UChicago.

Older dissertations are held in the Library and are also available through ProQuest. Our guide to finding dissertations explains how to locate them.

Non-affiliated users have several options.

• Many dissertations are freely available in Knowledge@UChicago and sometimes through ProQuest .

For many types of doctoral dissertations, archival research is the bedrock of the PhD. It’s in the archives where graduate students and researchers gain the evidence that will allow them to craft their arguments and make their cases. It’s extremely valuable and important work, and it needs to be done painstakingly well.

Unfortunately, it’s been nearly impossible to do this type of research throughout the last roughly 15 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While some archives have re-opened in countries faring better currently against the coronavirus, most are still closed and are operating at extremely limited capacity. In a few places, the archives remained open, but it was still impossible to get to them because of travel restrictions or the general infeasibility of traveling during a global pandemic.

Yet when archives are back open and you’re able to do this work, there’s some important things to think about before you make those trips.

The first is plan ahead . Just like any trip you might take, it’s important to have detailed plans in place beforehand. Let’s say you want to go to a presidential library archive in the United States. The first thing to do is to reach out the archivists or librarians at that archive. Ask them about what it’s like to conduct research there and if you need to fill out any specific registration forms before arriving onsite. You don’t want to not be able to consult those documents before you didn’t plan ahead and find out these details. It’s also a good tip to ask the archivists for their advice on certain records to consult. Archivists are a researcher’s best friend: they are extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. They are there to assist and help guide you with your research. In other words, use this precious resource!

The next is to ask your community about a specific archive or set archives . It’s very likely someone you know or in your network will have been to the archives you’re planning to visit. And if that’s the case, they’re likely to know best practices, good places to stay near the archives (if you don’t know anyone who lives near them, which is often the case for archives in more rural locations), good places to eat, and how to make the most of your trip. You’ll definitely want to tap those precious veins of knowledge. It can make planning your trip and the trip itself so much better and smoother.

When you’re in the archive, have a plan . Archives are known to be overwhelming. There are so many documents and other vestiges of information it becomes easy to get distracted. You might discover something too and it can lead you down a rabbit hole you didn’t plan to go down. The rabbit holes are what make archives fun, but you should plan in advance for that to happen and try to budget your time accordingly. These trips are crucial for your research, and you want to get as many documents as you can. That means to plan your time wisely because these trips can be expensive and it can be difficult to go on them again depending on your access to funds. In other words, make the most of your limited time and get everything you absolutely need. This is where the archivists can help you to maximize your time. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life can easily get upended. Don’t let that happen to your research if you can help it!

• Use a keyword search, enter your department or college name.  For example, Biochemistry and Biophysics, or Public Health.
• Refine your results to theses or dissertations on the  left-hand  side of the results page. Find the  Resource Type  heading (scroll almost to the end of the refining options), expand the box, then choose the  Masters Thesis  or  Dissertation  link depending on your interest.
• To find recent theses or dissertations, next refine your results on the left-hand side of the results page using the  Commencement Year  heading. Expand the box, then enter your preferred date range. For example 2017-2020. Then click "limit."
• From this focused list of results, click on a thesis or dissertation title. 
• To  view the full text,  select the  Download PDF  link on the left side of the page.

ProQuest Dissertation Express : find citations here, then request it from OSU Libraries' Interlibrary Loan .

• PQDT Open Searches open access theses and dissertations from the ProQuest database. It is a subset of Dissertation Abstracts.
• Google Scholar  indexes many open access theses and dissertations from institutions and authors that have published them as open access. However, filtering to just dissertations and theses is not an option at this time.
• Check the OSU Libraries  database list to see if a database in your discipline indexes dissertations (many do) or ask your subject librarian for help selecting the best option.
• Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) Recommends several search engines for access to dissertations and theses.
• Search The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) catalog to view citations of over 800,000 dissertations from countries outside the US and Canada. Where available, request full-text from the CRL through Interlibrary Loan .

Subscribing to Dissertation Abstracts through ProQuest is not possible due to subscription cost. However, we have developed this guide in order to direct the OSU community to other useful resources for finding theses and dissertations. Please contact your subject librarian if you have questions about finding dissertations and theses in your field.

From 2013 on: Dissertations and many theses produced by JHU students are available in our repository JScholarship.   Because the library does not keep paper copies of these submissions, you must search within JScholarship , not Catalyst. (Info on how to search JScholarship is below.)

Before 2013: Dissertations and theses submitted before 2013 should have paper copies available and can be requested through Catalyst, the library catalog. They may be consulted in the Special Collections department. Embargos: Unless the student has chosen an embargo, dissertations and theses should be available within two months of degree conferral. Students may elect to embargo publication of their thesis or dissertation for up to four years. During this time, the title and abstract of the dissertation will be available in JScholarship.

Also in ProQuest: In addition, JHU doctoral dissertations may be findable within the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database .

• The full text is available from 1997 to the present; before that, only abstracts are available online. For those older JHU dissertations, consult the staff in Special Collections . Or, if you know the title or author, look it up in the library catalog .
• Since the library switched to electronic copies only in 2013, not all dissertation authors have elected to send their dissertation to ProQuest. Instead, try JScholarship .

Master’s Theses : Master's theses (also called "essays") are also included in JScholarship . This has been optional since 2013.

•  Master's theses are not included in the ProQuest database, so they are not available in any form from ProQuest.  
• JHU Master’s theses that are available in print form can be requested . You will need to know either the author or title or both.
• If you need help identifying the names of students who graduated in specific years, please refer to our digital commencement programs  
• Master’s theses written for the Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) departments are also discoverable through Catalyst, our online catalog.  
• Please note that not all programs require writing and submission of a Master's thesis.

How To Find Dissertations and Masters' Essays in JScholarship:

•   Go to this page .
• You will see "Collections in This Community" at the center of the page.
• NOTE:  It is not possible to search by department or program name.

Now you have two options:

OPTION 1: ENTER SEARCH WORDS

You can enter search words in the box at the top of the page.

(You can try to find a department or program name that is somewhat distinctive. Enter the entire name and put it in quotation marks, such as “history of art” or “earth and planetary science.”) Narrow your search by:

A. Clicking “Show Advanced Filters” (under search box) OR

OPTION 2:  USE FILTERS UNDER “THIS COLLECTION” (on the right of the page)

Those options under "This Collection" will search either all of ETD (Electronic Theses and Dissertations) or one of the smaller communities (e.g., Doctoral Dissertations).

You can filter by issue date, authors, titles, or subjects. (Results do not appear in any particular order.) Again, make sure that you use the options under "This Collection" and not under "All of JScholarship”:

• Practicum and capstone projects have not been collected by the Archives, with some exceptions; e.g., real estate practicums produced by Carey Business School Real Estate program master’s degree students are now being collected, although not cataloged.
• Some schools or programs may keep an uncataloged collection of practicums, capstone projects, or dissertations  on-site. Contact the specific program or school to ask if they have such a collection.

Theses and Dissertations

Theses and dissertations are formal research papers that exhaustively address a topic, which PhD and many Master's candidates are required to complete as a final step in working towards their degrees. A paper in support of a PhD is referred to as a "dissertation"; a paper in support of a Master's degree is a "thesis". 

The best approach for finding a thesis or dissertation depends on whether you're looking for a paper from NC State or one from another institution.

Theses and dissertations at NC State

• All theses and dissertations in the Libraries' collection – both print and electronic – can be found in the  NC State University Libraries Catalog .
• All theses and dissertations completed since 2002 (with some coverage back to 1997) are available electronically through the Libraries'  Digital Repository

• Full text of University of Maryland, College Park, theses and dissertations from December 2003 to the present is available online at DRUM: Digital Repository at the University of Maryland .
• In instances where the student has restricted access to his/her electronic thesis or dissertation in DRUM for a specific period, any physical copies are also restricted. As of the Fall 2013 semester, physical copies are no longer created. Written permission from the author is required to make a restricted thesis or dissertation available before the restriction period expires.
• University of Maryland doctoral dissertations from 1997 to the present and master's theses from December 2003 to the present are available through Proquest Dissertations & Theses Global . Because of licensing agreements, this database can be used only by current faculty, staff, and students of the University of Maryland, College Park, and authorized users from other subscribing institutions.
• Permanent, non-circulating copies of University of Maryland, College Park, master's theses and doctoral dissertations are maintained by the University Archives  and stored offsite at Severn Library. They are available for researcher use in the Maryland Room of Hornbake Library.  Requests should be placed at least 2 business days prior to your visit to guarantee that they will be available in the Maryland Room for your use. • In some cases, a second, circulating copy of a thesis or dissertation is available in one of our branch libraries. Researchers should check the UMD Libraries Catalog for the exact location of circulating copies.
