presentation with music

Play music across multiple slides in your slide show

You can add a song to a presentation and play it across slides in the background of your slide show.

If you want to use music from the web, you have to download it to your computer before you can use it in a presentation.

Play a song across slides

On the Insert tab, select Audio , and then Audio on My PC.

In the file explorer, browse to the music file you want to use, and then select Insert .

With the audio icon selected on the slide, on the Playback tab, select Play in Background .

Play in Background makes the audio file start automatically during a slide show and also makes the audio play across multiple slides.

Halt audio after a specific number of slides

Follow the procedure above, "Play a song across slides." After the last step, do the following:

Open the slide where you inserted the audio. On the ribbon, select the Animations tab.

Near the right end of the toolbar, select Animation Pane .

In the Animation pane, double-click the item for your audio clip.

In the Play Audio dialog, on the Effects tab, under Stop playing , change the After # slides  value to the number of slides that you want music playing over. (The maximum value is 999.)

You can specify the number of slides that the audio clip will play over.

Select OK .

Play multiple songs across multiple slides

If your slide show is longer than one song, you can add more songs. However, if you find that you're having trouble synchronizing the music with the slide show, you can use a third-party audio editing tool, such as Audacity® , to string the songs together into one file so they play continuously throughout the slide show.

2 Ways to Add Any Music to PowerPoint in 2021

PowerPoint presentations are far more engaging with music added. I'll go over 2 different ways to add any track you want to your presentations in 2021.

2 Ways to Add Any Music to PowerPoint in 2021

An appropriate song can be effective in setting the tone of the presentation, retaining your audience's attention , and making your project more memorable .

Even better – a musical track playing along with your presentation can help you refine your timing when you prepare, so you're on pace when you present. It's easy to add any music you have saved to your device, or even a track you found online, to your PowerPoint presentation. Here's what you'll need to know:

Adding a track from your computer

Adding a track from youtube or soundcloud, editing the audio timing in powerpoint.

Open your presentation and select the slide where you'd like the track to begin playing. Select the " Insert " tab in the top toolbar and choose " Audio ," then " Audio from file ." When you've selected the file you want to use from your file browser, PowerPoint will add a small audio layer that looks like a speaker icon.

Screenshots from PowerPoint, showing how to add audio layers to a project.

Even easier, you can simply find the right audio file in your file browser, then drag & drop it onto the correct PowerPoint slide. Once you've added it to your presentation, you'll need to customize its timing and trigger so it works the way you want.

You can add any music you want to your presentation, even if you don't have them saved already. I recommend finding music on YouTube or SoundCloud : YouTube contains nearly every song you know, and SoundCloud is perfect for discovering new music in pre-curated playlists, and both are completely free & accessible. Once you've found the track you want to use, right-click on the URL bar and copy the song's link.

A screenshot showing how to copy a link from SoundCloud.

Next, head over to Kapwing.com, and paste the link you copied into the white box. Wait a few seconds while Kapwing uploads the file.

Then, click the green "Export Video" button in the top right corner and selection "MP3" from the dropdown. If you want to use just a specific part of the track, you can also trim the file while you're in the Studio.

A screenshot from the Kapwing Studio, with an arrow pointing at "Export as MP3".

Once your music is finished processing, click "Download" to save it to your computer. Now, open your presentation and select the slide where you'd like the track to begin playing.

Select the " Insert " tab in the top toolbar and choose " Audio ," then " Audio from file ." Alternatively, you can find the recently downloaded file in your file browser and drag & drop it directly into your PowerPoint window. Now you're ready to customize your presentation's timing!

Just adding music to your PowerPoint presentation isn't enough – you'll need to make sure it starts playing when you want it to, with the right triggers, and for the correct duration. Start by selecting the audio layer – it looks like a white speaker icon. With the track selected, choose " Animations " from the top toolbar.

A screenshot pointing out the audio editing options in PowerPoint.

Click the "Play" icon in the top toolbar to open the animations sidebar. Using the options in the sidebar, you can set the beginning of your audio track, the end trigger, the duration, and the media options.

I recommend using the " After Previous " option for the beginning trigger, and setting the media duration using slide numbers – if you want the music to play automatically until the end, just set the duration to the remaining number of slides under the " Media Options " section.

How to add music to google slides.

Looking to jazz up your Google Slides presentations with a little music? Here's how to do it.

Quick Links

Add a youtube video, add a google drive video, add music from an online streaming service.

Adding music to an otherwise text-heavy Google Slides presentation can spice it up. If you want to add music to Google Slides, you'll need to use a YouTube or Google Drive video, or link to a third-party streaming service instead.

You can't add audio files to Google Slides presentations, but you can add videos. The easiest solution for users who want to add music to their Google Slides presentation is to add a YouTube video.

This adds a YouTube video to your Google Slides presentation directly, loading the YouTube video player with playback options. Once a video starts playing, it will continue playing until you move onto the next slide.

To start, open your Google Slides presentation and click on the slide where you want to add your YouTube video. In the top menu, click Insert > Video.

You can search for YouTube videos in the "Search" tab of the "Insert Video" selection box. If you don't have a specific YouTube URL, use this search tool to find a relevant video.

Once you've found a video, select it and then click the "Select" button at the bottom to add it to your presentation.

If you already have a YouTube video you want to add and have the URL ready, click the "By URL" tab and then paste the web address in the provided box.

A preview of your video will appear below it. Once you're ready, click the "Select" button.

Your video will be inserted into your chosen slide where you can resize it and move it into position.

As an alternative to inserting YouTube videos, Google Slides users can insert their own private Google Drive videos. You can insert these videos from the same "Insert Video" selection box as above.

As with YouTube videos, inserted Google Drive videos will continue playing until you move to another slide.

To add a Google Drive video, go to your chosen slide, click Insert > Video, click the "Google Drive" tab, and then find your video from your cloud storage.

You'll need to sync your video files to Google Drive first, using the PC app or by uploading the video from the Google Drive website .

Related: How to Sync Your Desktop PC with Google Drive (and Google Photos)

Once you've found a video in your Google Drive storage, click on it and then click the "Select" button.

Your video will be inserted onto your slide. You can then move and resize it to suit your presentation.

You can use this method to add videos only from the same Google account you're using to create your Google Slides presentation. If you want to insert other types of videos, you'll need to use a public YouTube video instead.

Unfortunately, Google doesn't allow you to insert music files directly as you can with a YouTube or a Google Drive video. As a workaround, you can link to songs hosted on online streaming services like Spotify or SoundCloud instead.

The music from one of these services will load in a background tab, where it'll continue playing until you close it manually or the audio finishes.

To start, insert a suitable playback object for you to easily click during your presentation, such as an image, a shape, or a large text box. To insert a shape, for instance, click Insert > Shape and then select your chosen shape from the additional menus.

With your mouse, drag to create your chosen shape. Once created, you can begin typing to add text to your shape to clarify its purpose.

Right-click on your object and click "Link" from the menu. You'll need the URL for your chosen audio ready at this point.

In the "Link" box, paste your audio URL from your chosen third-party service. Click the "Apply" button to confirm.

During your Google Slides presentation, clicking on this object will load your chosen audio content.

It can do this in a separate tab only, however, so if you'd prefer to keep everything inside your presentation, use a Google Drive or YouTube video instead.

How to add music to a PowerPoint slideshow to make your presentation more engaging

  • You can easily add music to a PowerPoint slideshow if you want to make your next presentation more engaging.
  • You can add any MP3, MP4, WAV, or AAC file on your computer to your PowerPoint presentation, and adjust the settings so that it plays across slides if you want to.
  • Visit Business Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories .

It's true that Microsoft   PowerPoint is a business program made for creating official-looking presentations  for school or office settings — but that doesn't mean you can't use it to make your presentations fun, too.

One way to spice up a presentation is to add music — in a business setting, it'll be unexpected, and the fun surprise may just make your colleagues sit up straighter, pay attention, and maybe even enjoy the meeting.

This feature can also give a little extra umph to a school presentation — for example, a presentation on America in the '60s could be enhanced by the addition of some Motown music in the background.

1. At the top of the PowerPoint screen, on the toolbar, click the "Insert" tab.

2. Under "Insert, on the right side of the screen, click "Audio."

3. If you're using a PC, click the option for "Audio on My PC." If you're using a Mac, click the option for "Audio from File" or "Audio Browser."

Note: You can also record your own sound if you select "Record Audio."

4.  Locate the file you'd like to use, then click "Insert" in the dialog box. You can use MP3, MP4, WAV, or AAC files.

5. The file will appear on your PowerPoint as a little playback bar. You can use this to control the song. Move it to a part of your slide where it won't be in the way.

6. If you want the sound to play throughout the presentation, rather than just on the slide that the audio file is located on, click on the file to bring up the "Playback" tab on the toolbar at the top of your screen, and click on it.

7. Directly underneath the "Playback" tab, click the option for "Play in Background" to play the sound throughout.

Adjust any other options you want in this tab, like volume, fade in and out, and looping. When you're finished, return to the home tab to continue working on your presentation, or click save to finish.

How to Add Music to PowerPoint (Step-by-Step)

  • PowerPoint Tutorials
  • Shortcuts & Hacks
  • October 18, 2019

In this article you’ll learn how to add music to PowerPoint, and the different playback and looping options that are available to you.

Example of an audio file added to a PowerPoint presentation

There are two main things to note about adding music (or other audio files) to PowerPoint:

1. Adding music to your presentation is slightly different than adding narration directly from within PowerPoint.

If you are trying to add pre-recorded narration files to your presentation, I recommend instead using the  Record Audio  or  Record Slideshow  features to narrate a PowerPoint.

That’s because the built-in narration tools make lining up your voice narration with your slides a lot easier. To learn all about how to narrate a PowerPoint using these tools,  read our guide here .

2. Adding music to PowerPoint will increase the size of your PowerPoint presentation, as you can see in the picture below.

Adding music to PowerPoint increases the file size of your presentation, sometimes by a lot

Because the MP3 music files are embedded directly into your PowerPoint presentation, the size of your presentation will increase by the size of the MP3 music file you add.

For example, if you add a 17MB song to your presentation, the size of your presentation will increase by 17MB. If you add two music files to your slides, it will increase even further.

Embedding lots of audio files can make sharing your presentation difficult. To learn different ways you can compress PowerPoint to reduce your file size, read our guide here.

How to add music to PowerPoint (MP3 or other)

To insert music into PowerPoint, click the Insert tab, open the audio dropdown options, file the audio file on your computer and click insert

To add music to a PowerPoint presentation, simply:

  • Navigate to your  Title slide  (or wherever you want your music to start)
  • Click the  Insert  tab
  • Open the  Audio  drop down (in the Media group)
  • Select  Audio on My PC…
  • Navigate  to the folder on your computer
  • Select  the Audio file
  • Click  Insert

As a result, the audio file is embedded in your presentation as an object on your slide, and two new Ribbon tabs become available as you can see in the picture below.

After inserting a music file and PowerPoint you will see audio playback options and settings in your ribbon

Because the audio file is embedded in your presentation, anyone who now opens the presentation can access and play the music inside PowerPoint.

By default, your song will play within the  Click Sequence  of your presentation (see details below).

After inserting music to your presentation, you can then convert your entire presentation into a  video and share it with your colleagues. To learn how to save your presentation as a video,  read our guide here .

How to hide an audio file in PowerPoint

To hide a music file tab and select hide during show

If you don’t want your audio file to be visible on screen during your presentation, you can either click and drag it off your slide space, or simply:

  • Select  the Audio File
  • Open the  Playback Options  tab
  • Select  Hide During Presentation

Selecting  Hide During Presentation  hides the audio file object on the slide when running your Slideshow, so that it doesn’t display.

If you do this, make sure you are using either the  In Click Sequence  or  Automatically  play options for your audio file, otherwise your music will never play, as discussed below.

Note:  Make   sure you add your audio and music files to the exact slides on which you want them to play, because they can only be played once you reach the slide where they have been placed.

Adjusting when your music plays in PowerPoint

By default, your music files will play as part of the click sequence of your presentation which you can see and set within the  Animations Pane  (see  In Click Sequence  below).

However, like for most things in PowerPoint, you can change what triggers your music to play.

To change when your music starts playing in PowerPoint, click the Playback tab and in the start dropdown select when your music will start playing

To change when your music file starts playing in PowerPoint, simply:

  • Select the  Music file  on a slide
  • Open the  Playback Options  tab
  • Open the  Start  drop down
  • Choose  In Click Sequence ,  Automatically  or  When Clicked

Below is an explanation of what each of these different playback options means.

1. In Click Sequence

In Click Sequence means that your song will play based on it’s click sequence in your Animations Pane. If you have no animations or triggers set up on your slide, your song will play right before you advance to the next slide.

To change the click sequence of your music in PowerPoint, open the animations pane and rearrange your music files to change the click sequence

To change the order of your Click Sequence with other animations, simply.

  • Open the Animations tab
  • Click the Animation Pane
  • Reorder your music file with your other animations

2. Automatically

To keep your music playing, even when the song ends, on the playback tab select loop until stopped

Automatically means that your music plays as soon as you advance to that slide, and continues playing until either the song ends, or you advance to the next slide.

If you think you might be on this slide awhile and want the song to continue playing, simply select Loop Until Stopped .

3. When Clicked On

When Clicked On means that the music file will only play if someone physically clicks on the music file during your presentation.

This can be useful when you only want to play a song under certain circumstances, or when you want to control when the music starts or stops using your mouse.

A common mistake is to select when clicked on for a song to start in PowerPoint, but also hiding the audio file so you can never click it

Just make sure that if you select When Click On that you don’t also select Hide During Show . That’s because Hide During Show hides the audio file when you are giving your presentation, which means that you cannot click on it to start your song.

How to loop music across your entire presentation

To loop music across an entire PowerPoint presentation, select to start automatically, play across slides and loop until stopped on the playback tab

If you are turning your PowerPoint presentation into a video, or want your music to play across all your slides as you present them, follow these steps:

  • Insert  and  select your music file on your first slide
  • Open the  Playback  tab
  • Check  Loop Until Stopped
  • Check  Play Across Slides
  • Set the  Start  to play  Automatically

Doing so, your music will play as soon as you start your presentation ( F5  on your keyboard) and will continue to loop and play throughout your presentation.

To start your PowerPoint presentation from the beginning slideshow mode F5 on your keyboard

Your music will now only stop when you either exit slideshow mode (hitting  Esc  on your keyboard) or get to the end of your presentation.

To learn the different keyboard shortcuts for starting and stopping a PowerPoint slideshow,  read our guide here .

How to trim music in an PowerPoint presentation

If you only want a section of your audio file to play, you can use the audio trimmer tool in PowerPoint.

In the trim audio dialog box adjust the start time and end time to trim your music in your PowerPoint presentation

To trim an audio file in PowerPoint after you’ve inserted it, simply:

  • Select  your Audio file
  • Select the  Trim Audio  command
  • Adjust the  Start time
  • Adjust the  End Time

As a result, your audio file will be trimmed to the new start and end times you set.

Note:  If you later compress the media in your presentation, the parts of the audio file you trimmed away will be permanently removed.

This will decrease the size of the audio in your PowerPoint presentation, but it will also permanently alter your music file.

To learn a variety of different ways you can reduce your PowerPoint file size by compressing things in PowerPoint,  read our guide here .

How to remove all music files from your presentation

Audio and media files can easily be removed from your presentation by simply selecting them and hitting Delete.

However, if you have a lot of audio, video or music files spread out throughout your presentation, you can remove them all at the same time by following these simple steps.

1. Find your presentation in File Explorer

Save and close your PowerPoint presentation and then navigate to it on your computer in a file explorer window

Save and close your PowerPoint presentation, and then open the file folder where your presentation sits.

If your presentation is on the Desktop, simply click and drag it into a folder so you can see it in  File Explorer  as pictured above.

2. Turn on File name extensions

In the file Explorer click the view tab and select filename extensions to show the extensions

To turn on the file name extensions in  File Explorer , simply:

  • Click on the  View  tab
  • Select  File name extension s

This enables you to see (and edit) the file name extensions of your files. For example:

The file name extensions are .pptx for PowerPoint, .xlsx for Excel, and .docx for Word

3. Turn your PowerPoint into a ZIP file

Change the file name extension for your PowerPoint presentation from .pptx to .zip

To turn your PowerPoint presentation into a ZIP file, simply:

  • Right-click  your file
  • Select  Rename
  • Replace the ‘ .pptx ‘ part with ‘ .zip ‘ and hit  Enter
  • Select  Yes

This converts your PowerPoint presentation into a ZIP file with all your PowerPoint objects in it. As a result, you’ll be able to open the folder and edit its contents.

Changing the file name extension of your powerpoint presentation to .zip turns it into a zipped folder

4. Delete any MP3 or MP4 files from your media folder

Navigate to the media folder within a zipped file and delete all of the music files you want to remove from your PowerPoint presentation

For example, if you want to delete the media files (MP3 and MP4) out of your presentation, simply:

  • Open the  ZIP  folder
  • Double-click  PowerPoint
  • Double-click  Media
  • Select the MP3 and MP4 files you want to delete and hit  Delete

This deletes all the selected files from your presentation, regardless of where they exist within your presentation.

Note: The media folder also includes any audio or video narrations you have added to your presentation, so if you delete all those file types, you’ll remove the narration as well.

Therefore, if you are not sure which MP3 or MP4 files you want to delete from the folder, double-click them inside the ZIP folder to preview them before you delete them.

5. Turn your ZIP folder back into a PowerPoint presentation

When you are done deleting your music files from your PowerPoint presentation, right-click a zipped folder and rename the file extension to .pptx to turn it back into a PowerPoint presentation

Once you’ve deleted your media files, turn your ZIP file folder back into your PowerPoint presentation, simply:

  • Right-click  your ZIP folder
  • Change the ‘ .zip ‘ to ‘ .pptx ‘

As a result, you can now open your PowerPoint presentation without all the media files you deleted.

Example converting a zipped folder back into a PowerPoint presentation by changing attention to .pptx

Note:  If you don’t like seeing the  File extension names  in your file folders, you can simply turn them off in File Explorer, like this:

  • Navigate to the  View  tab
  • Uncheck  File name extensions

To hide your file extension names, in the file explorer window click the view tab and unselect file name extensions

In conclusion, there is a lot you can do with audio when you add music to your presentation.

If you followed the instructions in this article, you now know exactly how to add music to PowerPoint, and the different playback and looping options available to you.

Just remember to pay attention to how and when you trigger your music to play in PowerPoint… especially if you choose to hide your audio file in Slideshow mode, as otherwise it might not play.

You know the feeling when you're at a presentation, but you can't pay attention to what's being said because the music is so distracting? Choosing the right music is key to making a presentation better.

What is presentation music?

What music is good for presentation, powerpoint music, how to download music for powerpoint, how to add music to a powerpoint presentation, how to make playing music across slides in powerpoint, where can i download free presentation music, can i use copyrighted music in my presentation.

Making the right impression is a powerful marketing tool; presenters sometimes use music to connect with the audience immediately. Presentation music comes in many different genres, but any type will be more effective if it is related to the topic of the presentation.

The music you choose for your presentation can do many things for your audience - it can lighten the mood, drive excitement, or even set a pace. The key is to choose the appropriate music for your presentation and have it play at an acceptable volume.

  • Confidence: Fresh Startup , Calm Tech
  • Focusing: Successful Company , Good Energy
  • Uplifting: Your Time Has Come , Positive And Uplifting
  • Relaxed: Keep Going Forward , Soothing Medicine

PowerPoint is one of the most widely used presentation tools. The music playing in the background helps make a presentation more fun than it would be without the music, but there's often confusion over how to set up the audio track properly.

There are two basic file types you'll need to know - MP3s and WAVs. An MP3 is a compressed copy of an audio track that can be downloaded quickly. A WAV, or Waveform Audio File, is a digital format that supports higher quality, uncompressed audio, meaning it takes longer to download.

Both formats work in PowerPoint, but your choice depends on the type of presentation and how much music you want to include. To download music you need to add liked tracks to the Shopping cart, proceed to checkout and complete your payment. Download music instantly from the My Music > Tracks page.

  • Select the slide you want to add music.
  • On the Insert tab, click the Audio button.
  • Select the option 'Audio on My PC..'
  • Find and select your music files and click the Insert button.
  • Now you can set up a volume level for music.
  • Click on a sound icon to enable the Audio Tools panel.
  • Set on the checkbox 'Play Across Slides' so the music will play continuously throughout your presentation.

You can download free presentation music from the Free music page. Use free music in your presentations, slideshows, and videos without copyright concerns.

You can't just take a popular hit and put it into your presentation. You need to right to use music in your production. Purchase and download royalty-free presentation music by Melody Loops to use in your PowerPoint or Keynote presentation.

How to choose the right background music for your business presentation

You’ve worked hard on your pitch deck. You’ve carefully chosen the right images, colors, and text that will hopefully get your investors interested. Whether you are sending your pitch deck or presenting in front of an audience, choosing the right background track will really make your presentation shine!

We have outlined three tips below to help you choose the track that will drive your pitch home and strike an emotional chord with investors.

1. Keep a Steady Pace

Choose a track that glides along without a lot of fanfare. A steady pace will draw your audience in and help them focus on the content of each slide. Choose music that is gentle, positive and bright, with some moments that pause, then continue the dynamic.

2. Tone is Important

Setting the right tone that relates to your idea will convey clarity and credibility to your audience. Whether the tone of your pitch is powerful and engaging or gentle and reassuring, the background music should match.

3. Make an Emotional Connection

When pitching your product to investors, let your passion shine through. Your pitch deck should have all of the elements of a great story. If your presentation has a kick-in-the-pants spirit, the right background music will accentuate that.

Choosing the Best Music for Corporate Event Presentations

Making a presentation in front of a corporate event audience can be daunting. How can you get your audience’s attention over the conversation and buzz? How do you really make an impact? One way is to add a background track to your slide presentation. If you are presenting a slide show at a business dinner, conference, or trade show, read on to find out how to choose the best background music.

1. Taking the Subtle Approach

Set the tone for the occasion by adding minimalist, even-toned music— more of a backdrop that your audience can focus their ears on. Subtle music exudes a calm atmosphere. The right track can be barely noticeable but will still affect the audience in subtle ways.

2. High Energy Approach

If your slide show has a high-energy, celebratory feel, choose tracks that engage your audience to feel that. Steady driving drums, danceable synth lines, and that dreamy backdrop give an air of brightness and positivity to your corporate presentation.

Hillyer's Ju-Yong Ha to Present Research at International World Music Conference

photo of Ju-Yong Ha

His presentation on globalization, transnationalism, and interculturality in music is i titled “Narrative Across the Pacific: Pansori Performance and its Reception History in the US.” It discusses the evolution of pansori, an epic narrative chant designated as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Ha will present a chronological framework divided into five overlapping phases over the last six decades, focusing on how each phase aligns with Korea’s evolving political, socio-cultural, and economic contexts. The timeline spans from the post-war reconstruction of the 1950s, influenced by Cold War ideologies, through the 1960s cultural heritage system established by the government, the economic boom shaping modern national identity, and the contemporary era of globalization.

Upfronts 2024: TV Insiders Ready to ‘Sprint' and Schmooze Again After 2023's Strike Disruption (FULL CALENDAR)

When NBCUniversal kicks off TV's traditional week of upfront presentations on Monday, picket-free sidewalks outside Radio City Music Hall will be a sight for sore eyes following last year's noisy protests in the first weeks of what proved to be the nation's "hot labor summer."

Hosting a programming presentation at a megawatt New York City venue like Radio City or Javits Center is stressful enough. Executives are eager to return to business as usual in wooing Madison Avenue. Last year, the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2, barely two weeks before the curtain went up on NBCU's tip-off event.

"As much as the upfront is a business presentation, it's also a celebration of everything that NBCUniversal has to offer," Josh Feldman, chief marketing officer of NBCUniversal advertising and partnerships tells Variety . "And our number one goal is for our audience to walk out of Radio City feeling inspired by their experience, and excited to find new and creative ways to work together. From news to sports to entertainment, in English and in Spanish, on linear and streaming, and everything in between – NBCUniversal has an unrivaled portfolio of content, talent and technology that we are thrilled to pull the curtain back on Monday morning."

2024 UPFRONTS SCHEDULE

MONDAY (May 13)

10:30 a.m.: NBCUniversal (Radio City Music Hall); 4 p.m.: Fox Corp. (Hammerstein Ballroom); 6:30 p.m. Telemundo (The Shed NYC)

TUESDAY (May 14)

9:30 a.m.: Amazon Ads (Pier 36); 11:30 a.m. TelevisaUnivision (HK Hall); 4 p.m.: Disney (North Javits Center)

WEDNESDAY (May 15)

10 a.m.: Warner Bros. Discovery (The Theater at MSG); 3 p.m. Netflix First-Look Presentation (Pier59 Studios); 6 p.m.: YouTube (David Geffen Hall)

THURSDAY (May 16)

All day: Netflix Experience (Pier59 Studios)

And with writers and actors no longer on strike, NBCU and competitors Disney, Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix and now Amazon, have an easier task of planning events. This year they can include talent again, rather than a parade of execs promoting projects on stage while pretending the WGA isn't chanting unfavorable things right outside.

"There is an increased energy this year, of course, with talent and press and execs back in full force," one source within a large legacy media company says. "Upfronts have evolved in the last 30 years but the energy has steadily increased with slight blips - last year most obvious among them - so when the gun goes off this year, people will be ready to sprint."

Another insider a major media conglom observes, "There's such a good feeling that we'll have talent and shows we can date - things that were all up in the air last year."

Though talent can come back – and the networks and streamers are happy to have them doing the heavy lifting on stage – the assignment of being front and center at upfront programming presentations isn't as glamorous as it once was for A-listers.

"We're glad the strikes are settled and everyone can be friends again, but that doesn't mean upfronts are all of a sudden this huge deal for our clients again," an agency source says. "They're so pared down compared to what they used to be. And even if you're the star of a new broadcast show, you're not the star of the upfronts anymore. It's mostly about big live events and their whole portfolio now."

With the strikes out of the way, there is also room for new concerns, including how much money media congloms still lay out to woo advertisers during upfront season. Questions about the ROI from glitzy upfront week events is under scrutiny at a time when most of the majors have endured deep budget cuts and layoffs have shrunk the size of the staff around to execute these events.

"The overlay is also that the ad market is still pretty soft, so there's a lot of people feeling a lot of pressure," a source in cable ad sales says.

Multiple individuals say media companies are sending fewer employees from Los Angeles to New York for the week this year, and the scripted departments are being relied upon less heavily to fill out the programs, as presentations are more likely to focus on sports and unscripted content.

There are also concerns that while Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA aren't protesting outside the upfronts, other activists could use the upfront presentations of the owners of Fox News, CNN, MSNBC and ABC News as a chance to stage demonstrations surrounding the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

This year marks Amazon's first go at the upfronts with its Amazon Ads division, following the move to bring advertising to premium streamer Prime Video. The ecommerce giant previously dabbled in newfronts for ad-supported Freevee. It's also a fresh start for Netflix, which enterted upfront week for the the first time last year but scrambled to produce a virtual event at the last minute after the onset of the WGA strike.

Warner Bros. Discovery has held two upfronts as a unified company since its merger was completed in April 2022, but insiders see this week's event as the first full-throttle effort to demonstrate the breadth of offerings across Max, TNT, Food Network, HGTV, Discovery, Warner Bros. and more. The 2022 event was held weeks after the completion of the $43 billion mega-merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery. The second event was held last year amid the sound of WGA pickets and protesters outside shouting harsh words about WBD chief executive David Zaslav.

With cautious optimism, most industry insiders gearing up for TV's marathon week are banking on getting away from the "bizarre" and "weird" vibes of 2023's upfronts and seeing "more fun and lighthearted" energy in the coming week.

The Ultimate Mother’s Day Playlist

By Rob Sheffield

Rob Sheffield

The annals of music folklore are full of unforgettable moms. There’s tough mothers, saintly mothers, evil mothers, motorcycle mamas, mothers of invention. Some stars love to do emotional tributes to their mamas, from Tupac to Taylor, from Dolly to Drake. Others celebrate the fearsome bad-ass maternal figures — whether it’s  LL Cool J ’s mama telling him to knock you out, or Rosalita’s mama chasing  Bruce Springsteen  off the porch with a broom. So here’s a few of our favorite mom songs, from pop, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and country.

Queen, ‘Tie Your Mother Down’

Don’t do that!

Drake, ‘Look What You’ve Done’

Of all the many women in Aubrey Graham’s songs, none has a place in his heart like his mother Sandi. “Look What You Done” is a highlight from Take Care , where Drake thanks the women of his family: his aunt, his grandmother, but especially his mother. He recalls her health struggles and their arguments, but he promises her, “After all the things that we’ve been through, I got you.”

Dolly Parton, ‘Coat of Many Colors’

LOS ANGELES - 1978: Country singer Dolly Parton poses for a portrait session in 1978 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry Langdon/Getty Images)

One of Dolly’s most beloved songs—a down-home ballad about growing up in a poor family with a mama who taught her what love is all about, sewing her a coat from a box of rags. Dolly has given the world so many different mother figures, but they’re not all saints—as in “Travelin’ Man,” on the same Coat of Many Colors album, where her mama steals her guy.

2Pac, ‘Dear Mama’

presentation with music

So many rap classics about the heroic moms who held it down, from Snoop Dogg’s “I Love My Momma” to Biggie’s “Juicy” to Nas’ “Dance.” But Tupac did the most famous of them all with “Dear Mama,” paying tribute to the Black Panther revolutionary Afeni Shakur. As Pac says, “Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place.”

Victoria Monet, ‘On My Mama’

Victoria Monét On My Mama Music Video

“When they say, ‘She get it from her mama’? I’m-a say, ‘You fucking right.” Any questions? Respect due to Victoria Monet’s mama and the fierce daughter she raised.

The Beatles, ‘Let It Be’

BEATLES 1966 Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison at Top Of The Pops

Paul McCartney sends out a prayer to his real-life Mother Mary, a Liverpool nurse who passed away when he was just a boy of 14. But in times of trouble, he still hears Mary McCartney’s voice, speaking words of wisdom. “Let It Be” has been a light in the darkness for listeners ever since.

The Beatles, ‘Julia’

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1966: The Beatles, English music group Pop (1962-1970). Standing : Paul MacCartney and John Lennon (1940-1980). Seat : Ringo Starr and George Harrison (1943-2000). August 1966. (Photo by Roger Viollet Collection/Getty Images)

John Lennon, like Paul, lost his mother at a young age, and like Paul, he wrote a tribute that taught the world to say her name. “Julia” is a tender White Album love song, from a free-spirited son to his equally free-spirited mother. No rock band ever mythologized their mothers like The Beatles—even Ringo gave his Mum an entire album of her favorite songs in Sentimental Journey .

Taylor Swift, ‘The Best Day’

presentation with music

Taylor has spent her whole life singing the praises of Andrea Swift, but never more beautifully than in “The Best Day.” It’s a tearjerker for sure, telling their whole mother/daughter story. Every time Taylor performs live, one of the fan-fave moments is right before the show when Andrea walks to her seat and gets her own ovation.

Ghostface Killah & Mary J. Blige, ‘All That I Got Is You’

presentation with music

The Wu-Tang Clan’s Iron Man gives it up to the iron woman who raised him, saying, “This is dedicated to all the families that went through the struggle.” He gets real about how his mother (“my earth”) and grandmother kept the family together in the bleakest poverty, even the times when “mommy wasn’t strong enough.” It’s one of the rawest, most poignant rapper’s-mama tributes, with Mary J. Blige adding her heavenly soul vocals. Ghostface updated it in “Momma” on Fishscale , except with a lot more money, promising “I’ll Dior you out.”

The Shirelles, ‘Mama Said’

UNITED STATES - JANUARY 01: USA Photo of SHIRELLES, Beverley Lee, Doris Kenner-Jackson, Shirley Alston and Addie 'Micki' Harris (Photo by Gilles Petard/Redferns)

So much good advice to be learned from the wise moms of Sixties girl-group pop. In Motown, Diana Ross and the Supremes took their troubles to “Mother Dear”; over in Chicago, Jan Bradley sang “Mama Didn’t Lie.” But the sentimental faves have to be The Shirelles, who get through tough times by remembering, “Mama said there’ll be days like this.”

Merle Haggard, ‘Mama Tried’

LOS ANGELES - SEPTEMBER 1966: Country musician Merle Haggard (L) and his band "Merle Haggard & the Strangers" pose for a September 1966 portrait in Los Angeles, California. Guitarist Roy Nichols is seated on the right. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Hag’s ultimate outlaw tale, sung from behind the bars of a jail cell. He grew up the rebel child of the family, while his saintly mama cried over him. Turning 21 in prison, doing life without parole, Merle recalls how she struggled to raise him right. But as he sings, “That leaves only me to blame, ‘cause mama tried.”

Kacey Musgraves, ‘Mother’

presentation with music

A short interlude on Golden Hour , only 1:18 long, but straight from the heart, as Kacey sings about living too far away from her mother, missing her over the miles from Tennessee to Texas. She revealed that she wrote it after getting a text from her mom while tripping on acid. Now that’s relatable.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, ‘Simple Man’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: Photo of Leon WILKESON and Ed KING and Gary ROSSINGTON and Billy POWELL and LYNYRD SKYNYRD and Ronnie VAN ZANT and Allen COLLINS; L-R: Leon Wilkeson, Billy Powell, Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Bob Burns, Allen Collins, Ed King - posed, group shot (Photo by Gems/Redferns)

Can you imagine how tough Ronnie Van Zant’s mama must have been? Now there’s a hard-ass Southern matriarch for you – she probably shot down a lot of free birds in her day. But Marion Van Zant gave Ronnie this advice: “Baby, be a simple kind of man/Be something you love and understand.” And he spent his life doing her proud. Of all the classic-rock mom tributes, “Simple Man” is the one that never fails to get those lighters lifted high and bring a tear to a biker’s eye.

Beyoncé, ‘Ring Off’

NEW ORLEANS, LA - JANUARY 31: Beyonce and Tina Knowles pose backstage at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show Press Conference at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on January 31, 2013 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)

Beyoncé pledges her love to Tina Knowles, in one of her most personal songs, in the aftermath of her parents’ divorce. She tells her mother, “Always know you got a daughter who’s proud you took the high road,” and adds, “You a killer, you so sexy!” It ends with words from Tina herself: “If you’re going through it, just know it’s called ‘going through it’—you’re not gonna get stuck there. You’re not gonna die, you’re gonna survive.”

Lucy Dacus, ‘My Mother and I’

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - MARCH 06: Singer/songwriter Lucy Dacus performs at the Ryman Auditorium on March 06, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Jason Kempin/Getty Images)

Dacus wrote this for Mother’s Day in 2019, but she isn’t going for hearts and flowers, as you can tell from the opening lines: “My mother hates her body / We share the same outline / She swears that she loves mine.” It’s for both her mothers—the one who raised her and the biological one she just met at 19. An astoundingly powerful song about growing up, guilt, and inheritance, with the kicker: “All she has given/All I have taken / All is forgiven / All is forsaken.”

Danzig, ‘Mother’

Danzig, performing on stage, Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, CA, United States, 15th February 1995. (Photo by Niels van Iperen/Getty Images)

Glenn Danzig, the musclebound Misfits belter from hell, warns the mothers of the world not to let their children listen to evil music like this. He isn’t wrong.

Jay-Z, ‘December 4’

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 29: Jay-Z poses with his mother, Gloria Carter during an evening of "Making The Ordinary Extraordinary" hosted by The Shawn Carter Foundation at Pier 54 on September 29, 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Jamie McCarthy/WireImage)

Has any artist ever created so many classic songs about his mother? Shawn Carter might hold the record, from “Blueprint (Momma Loves Me)” to “Smile,” where he stands by Gloria Carter as she comes out. But the Black Album jam “December 4″ is where they co-narrate the whole story of their hard-knock life together. Gloria recalls that he was “the only one who didn’t give me any pain when I gave birth to him.” Jay admits he made up for that later.

Carole King, ‘Where You Lead’

UNITED STATES - FEBRUARY 13: LAUREL CANYON Photo of Carole KING, posed, outside her home on Appian Way (Photo by Jim McCrary/Redferns)

Carole King wrote a classic ode to mom/daughter bonding—without even realizing she’d done it. When she sang “Where You Lead” on Tapestry , she considered it an adult love song. But years later, when it became the Gilmore Girls theme, King finally realized this is what the song was always meant to be. She asked Toni Stern to rework the lyrics, and sang it as a duet with her daughter Louise Goffin.

The Stratford 4, ‘Telephone’

presentation with music

A psychedelic shoegaze guitar tale about a rock & roll mom who’s partied harder than you ever will. Alone late at night, weary from too much dancing and decadence every night, he calls his mother for advice. She tells him, “When I was 22/I was a lot like you,” and orders him to go play some more  Dylan  and  Stones  albums. Coolest rock & roll mom in any song, ever.

Diana Ross and the Supremes, ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’

American vocal group The Supremes, New York City, February 25th 1966. Left to right: Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross.

The Supremes scored a Number One hit with this Motown mama-said classic. When these lonely girls feel like they can’t go on, all they have to do is remember what mama taught them: “You can’t hurry love / No, you just have to wait / Just trust, give it time/No matter how long it takes.” Listen to the woman—she knows what she’s talking about. Diana Ross gives one of her finest vocals, while James Jamerson lays down the mother of all basslines.

LL Cool J, ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’

presentation with music

You know, LL was totally right about the whole “don’t call it a comeback” thing. He’d just had one of his biggest and best hits in 1989, “I’m That Type of Guy.” But somehow the criticism spurred him to prove to Ma Dukes that her boy was indeed the future of the funk, in this old-school rap banger. LL’s mama Ondrea Smith makes a cameo in the video, calling him by his given name “Todd.”

Alicia Keys, ‘Superwoman’

presentation with music

Alicia sends this anthem out to superwomen everywhere, especially the moms, singing, “This is for all the mothers fighting for better days to come.”

Joni Mitchell, ‘Let The Wind Carry Me’

A portrait of Joni Mitchell being interviewed in 1972 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. (Photo by Gijsbert Hanekroot/Redferns)

A Seventies meditation on changing gender roles, as Joni Mitchell looks at her own troubled relationship with her mother, re-evaluating her rebellious teen years in light of her adult perspective. A highlight of her most underrated masterpiece, For The Roses .

Funkadelic, ‘Cosmic Slop’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: (AUSTRALIA OUT) Photo of FUNKADELIC; Posed group portrait of Funkadelic (Photo by GAB Archive/Redferns)

A young man moans over grimy Hendrix-gone-uptown guitars about being haunted by his mama’s deal with the forces of evil: To feed her kids, she sold herself as a dancer to the devil. (Take that,  Ozzy !) He hears her voice calling in his drugged-out head – “Would you like to dance with me?/I’m doing the cosmic slop” – as the guitars voice her soul.

OutKast, ‘Ms. Jackson’

presentation with music

Of all the songs for the baby-mamas’ mamas, this OutKast classic has to be the saddest and most honest. Andre 3000 sings, “Never meant to make your daughter cry.”

Japanese Breakfast, ‘Psychopomp’

AUSTIN, TX - MARCH 17: Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast performs onstage at Secretly Group & Friends music showcase during the 2016 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival on March 17, 2016 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Amy E. Price/Getty Images for SXSW)

A poignant moment on Japanese Breakfast’s breakthrough album. Michelle Zauner devotes Psychopomp to mourning her mother Chongmi, a woman she portrays so beautifully in her memoir Crying in H Mart . It’s a synth-and-guitar setting for a voicemail from her mother consoling her, by saying “gwenchanta,” or “it’s all right” in Korean.

The Beach Boys, ‘Mama Says’

LOS ANGELES - MAY 1: The Beach Boys (L-R Carl Wilson, Bruce Johnston, Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine) Pose for a portrait session on May 1, 1987 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Harry Langdon/Getty Images)

Brian Wilson leads his bros through a brief a cappella tribute to maternal wisdom: “Eat a lot, sleep a lot, brush ’em like crazy/Run a lot, do a lot, never be lazy.” It’s the finale to their classic Wild Honey , ending on a note of family harmony.

2Chainz featuring YG and Offset, ‘Proud’

presentation with music

Three rap legends remind everyone they’re in the game just to make their mamas proud. 2Chainz remembers how they used to trap together out of the same house: “Me and mama got busted at the same time/Went to court and told the judge the same damn lies.” As he said, “We starved together, struggled together, hustled together, smiled together.”

Jan Bradley, ‘Mama Didn’t Lie’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: Photo of Jan BRADLEY; Posed studio portrait of Jan Bradley (Photo by Gilles Petard/Redferns)

A Chicago soul classic from Jan Bradley. Her mama didn’t raise no fool, teaching her the ways of the world: men are trash, don’t believe a word they say, stay in school. “She said, ‘Girl, stay in your class / You got a whole lot of growing and a-learning to do / So girl, don’t you go so fast.” Jan Bradley’s mama didn’t lie, and neither did Jan.

Madonna, ‘Promise To Try’

American musician Madonna performs in concert, New York, New York, circa 1989. (Photo by Larry Busacca/WireImage)

Madonna at her most autobiographical. “Promise To Try” was never a hit, or even a single, but it’s the intimate piano ballad at the heart of her classic confessional Like a Prayer . Madonna Louise Ciccone remembers the mother who shared her name, telling herself, “Never forget her eyes/Keep them alive inside.” She dedicated the album “to my mother, who taught me to pray.”

The Spinners, ‘Sadie’

UNITED STATES - APRIL 15: AMERICAN BANDSTAND - "Show Coverage" 1974 The Spinners (Photo by ABC Photo Archives/Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images)

If your mama has a taste for old-school Philly soul—and who doesn’t?—“Sadie” is the one. The Spinners never sounded sweeter, with everyone on the team putting their hearts into it—the genius producer Thom Bell, the house band MFSB, lead singer Phillipe Wynne hailing “the premier of ladies.”

Kanye West, ‘Hey Mama’

LOS ANGELES - FEBRUARY 10: Producer and rapper Kanye West and his mother Donda West attend the Kanye West and Creative Artist Agency Foundation launch of the Kanye West Foundation for music education in the schools, February 10, 2005 at the CAA offices in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Getty Images).

Kanye pays tribute to Donda West, a few years before her tragic death, with an emotional powerhouse from the jam-packed back-half of Late Registration , when he was still touching the sky. And there’s a sample of “Sadie.”

Sleater-Kinney, ‘Little Babies’

Portrait of Sleater-Kinney (L-R) Carrie Brownstein, Janet Weiss, Corin Tucker, backstage at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California, USA on 23rd September 2002. (Photo by Anthony Pidgeon/Redferns)

A catchy, hilarious, but tough-talking guitar rager about moms and daughters, with all of their conflicts. The punk rock goddesses in Sleater-Kinney make “Little Babies” one of the highlights of their classic Dig Me Out , with Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein trading off lines in a good-cop/bad-cop maternal dialogue, until they explode into the irresistibly rowdy chorus. Best rock-mom line: “Are you hungry? Did you eat before the show?”

B.B. King, ‘Nobody Loves Me But My Mother’

UNSPECIFIED - JANUARY 01: Photo of BB KING (Photo by Fin Costello/Redferns)

B.B. King sings the blues, with the immortal line, “Nobody loves me but my mother, and she could be jiving too.”

Kate Bush, ‘Mother Stands For Comfort’

You know how sometimes you decide to drop in on your mom for a little surprise visit? Because you’ve just committed a murder and you need a place to hide, and you know she’ll take you in no matter what? Kate Bush makes this one of her most beautifully disturbing odes to motherly devotion.

Bruce Springsteen, ‘Rosalita’

American musician Bruce Springsteen plays at the Trenton War Memorial, Trenton, New Jersey, November 1974. (Photo by Allan Tannenbaum/Getty Images)

“I know your mama, she don’t like me/’Cause I play in a rock & roll band.” Rosie’s ma is a real hard-ass, but she’s a lot cooler than Sherry’s. To this day, Mama Rosalita is probably still shaking her damn head at that skinny guy from the swamps of Jersey.

Bruce Springsteen, ‘The Wish’

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 15: Bruce Springsteen takes his final "Springsteen on Broadway" curtain call at Walter Kerr Theatre on December 15, 2018 in New York City. (Photo by Taylor Hill/Getty Images)

Another Bruce classic, but a very different story: “The Wish” is a tribute to his real-life mother Adele, and an emotional highlight of his Springsteen on Broadway show. He pulls up in a hot rod and tells mom, “We’ll find us a little rock & roll bar and baby, we’ll go out and dance.” They always loved that. “My mother and her two sisters were dancing machines,” he recalls in the Broadway introduction. “When she comes in the door, we make sure there’s music on. She wants to dance.”

The Shangri-Las, ‘Bull Dog’

The Shangri-Las, L-R Mary Ann Ganser, Betty Weiss, Marge Ganser and Mary Weiss, pose for a studio group portrait in 1964 in the United States. (Photo by Gilles Petard/Redferns)

Four tough-as-leather beehived girls from the mean streets of Queens – including a set of twins – they had the most epic battles with their moms, fighting over greaser boys in hits like “Leader of the Pack.” This time, though, it’s their boyfriend’s mother. “I’m in love with the prettiest boy in the U.S.A./But his momma bought a dog just to keep little me away!” Ma  tries to scare off those lust-crazed Shangri-Las, but it doesn’t work, because no bulldog is as fearsome as a Shangri-La in raging-pheromone mode. If you doubt punk rock women were kicking ass in the Sixties, start here.

The Backstreet Boys, ‘The Perfect Fan’

American vocalists Nick Carter, Brian Littrel, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, and AJ McLean, of the group the Backstreet Boys, pose for photographs, New York, New York, circa 1998. (Photo by Larry Busacca/WireImage)

The boy-band tradition is full of maternal devotion, going back to how New Edition and the New Kids both dedicated their debut albums to their moms. Brian, Howie, Kevin, Nick, and A.J. sum it up with their thank-you to “The Perfect Fan.”

ABBA, ‘Hey Hey Helen’

Abba 1975 (Photo by Chris Walter/WireImage)

Abba give some love to the Seventies divorced moms—not a demographic that got much attention on pop radio at the time. But Abba were a lot more candid chronicling the 1970s feminist revolution than supposedly edgier bands. Anni-Frid and Agnetha ask, “Is it worth the pain to see the children cry? Does it hurt when they ask for Daddy?” But they cheer on Helen as she rebuilds her life, to become “a woman of today.” Question: How did Abba’s best mom song get left out of both Mamma Mia movies?

Junior, ‘Mama Used To Say’

presentation with music

A great one-shot from the Eighties, with Junior Giscombe rising out of the London R&B scene. “Mama Used To Say” was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, with its zippy electro-soul beat and Junior testifying in the voice of a young Stevie Wonder, as he quotes his mother’s advice: “Live your life!”

Patti Smith, ‘Mother Rose’

Patti Smith during Patti Smith in Concert in Dublin - July 29, 2004 at Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland. (Photo by Tom O'Donnell/WireImage)

Nobody tells family stories like Patti Smith—she wrote the all-time greatest baby-sister song (“Kimberly”), while also chronicling her father, her husband, her kids. But “Mother Rose” is a mystic tribute to her South Jersey mom: “She felt our tears, heard our sighs/And turned to gold before our eyes.”

Neil Young, ‘Cinnamon Girl’

BIG SUR, CA - SEPTEMBER 13-14: Neil Young plays his guitar during The Big Sur Folk Festival on September 13-14, 1969 at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. (Photo by Robert Altman/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

“Mom, send me money now”: How many footloose hippies have sent a letter like that back home since 1969? But only Neil Young was honest enough to admit it in a song.

Ernie K-Doe, ‘Mother-in-Law’

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1970: Photo of Ernie K-Doe Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

And then there’s this less sentimental blast of New Orleans funk, where Ernie K-Doe compares his wife’s meddling mother to Satan. Allen Toussaint provides the ice-coldest nine-note piano solo in history.

The Intruders, ‘I’ll Always Love My Mama’

American soul band The Intruders perform at the 1973 Watts Summer Festival concert, held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, 19th August 1973. Held annually, the Watts Summer Festival commemorates the anniversary of the Watts riots. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

Another Philly soul classic from Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, the Intruders’ most famous hit is a family affair, proclaiming, “She’s my favorite girl!” From their album Save the Children , which also had their heart-tugging version of Paul Simon’s “Mother and Child Reunion.”

BTS, ‘Mama’

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - DECEMBER 26: Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, RM, V and J-Hope of BTS attend the 2016 SAF Gayo Daejeon at COEX on December 26, 2016 in Seoul, South Korea. (Photo by The Chosunilbo JNS/Imazins via Getty Images)

J-Hope sings of his gratitude to “Mama,” in a gospel-style standout from the BTS album Wings . It starts out in 2006, when he’s a child learning to dance with her help; it follows her support and encouragement over the years, as she teaches Hobi that failure is the mother of success.

The Five Stairsteps, ‘O-o-h Child’

UNSPECIFIED - CIRCA 1970: Photo of Five Stairsteps Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

Few vintage soul sounds can soothe a troubled mind like Aloha Burke’s voice as she sings the opening lines of this dusty Chicago groove: “Ooooh child, things are gonna get easier / Ooooh child, things’ll get brighter.”

Al Wilson, ‘Queen of the Ghetto’

Soul Singer Al Wilson poses for a Rocky Road Records publicity still circa 1974. (Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images)

The late, great R&B singer is best remembered today for his Number One hit, “Show and Tell,” one of the Seventies’ suavest love jams. But Wilson got grittier in his ode to a matriarch who did what she had to do to put food on the table – and he’s nothing but proud.

Johnny Paycheck, ‘I’m The Only Hell (My Mama Ever Raised)’

Promotional studio portrait of American country singer and songwriter Johnny Paycheck (Don Lytle) (1938 - 2003), 1977. (Photo by Archive Photos/Getty Images)

A classic of outlaw country, the twanged-up honky-tonk tale of a bad, bad man who’s done some evil deeds—but he’s always got a soft spot for Mama. (And ONLY for Mama.) Johnny Paycheck, the ornery hombre who sang “Take This Job and Shove It,” makes the whole bar sing along: “She tried to turn me on to Jesus/But I turned to the devil’s ways/And I turned out to be the only hell my mama ever raised!”

Drake and Nicki Minaj lead the pack in 2024 BET Award nominations

by MARIA SHERMAN | AP Music Writer

(AP) — Drake is the leading nominee for next month's BET Awards, followed closely by Nicki Minaj.

The Canadian rapper received seven nominations Thursday, including an album of the year nod for his eighth studio album, “For All the Dogs.” One of the awards he's up for is the music video for “First Person Shooter,” his collaboration with J. Cole that may have been the catalyst for his recent beef with rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Minaj received six nominations, including for album of the year for her highly anticipated “Pink Friday 2” release. Two of her nominations were for her song with Ice Spice, “Barbie World,” part of the blockbuster “Barbie” soundtrack.

Victoria Monét, one of several artists to receive five nominations, is scheduled to perform at the show, which will be held June 30 in Los Angeles.

Beyoncé, received four nominations, including for best female R&B/pop artist as well as recognition for two “Cowboy Carter” tracks, “Texas Hold 'Em” and “16 Carriages.”

Her collaboration with Lamar, “America Has a Problem (Remix),” is competing against songs by Minaj, Usher, Cardi B and Drake.

Drake's “Rich Baby Daddy,” which features SZA and Sexyy Red, is competing for the best collaboration and two other awards.

The BET Awards extend beyond music with honors for film, acting and sports figures.

“Renaissance,” the Beyoncé tour film that was released in theaters late last year, is also nominated for best movie.

Super Bowl headliner Usher is among the artists vying for four awards, along with 21 Savage, Megan Thee Stallion , Doja Cat and Tyla, who won the inaugural best African music performance honor at the Grammy Awards.

Joining Monét, the best new artist Grammy winner, with five nominations apiece are J. Cole, Sexyy Red and SZA.

Sexyy Red will also perform during the show, as will Muni Long, Latto, Glorilla and Shaboozey.

The film nominees this year are: “American Fiction”; “Bob Marley: One Love”; “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé"; “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”; “The Book of Clarence”; “The Color Purple”; “The Equalizer 3” and “The Little Mermaid.”

Simone Biles, Naomi Asaka, Steph Curry, Lebron James and Patrick Mahomes are among the sports stars competing for awards.
