The Tote Bag Market
The tote bag market is broad, spanning mass market and luxury customers. Nearly everyone uses tote bags for activities like shopping, going to the beach or gym, or carrying items to work or school. Your target audience will depend on the specific styles and price points you want to offer. If you aim for the mass market, your totes can be more basic but still stylish, using affordable materials and simple designs. You can sell at lower price points, around $10-$30, and market to a wide range of customers. For a luxury or boutique market, use high-quality, unique materials and more intricate designs. Price points would be $30-$100 or more. Market to customers looking for an premium, fashionable product. You can also choose to focus on a local market, selling at craft fairs, local boutiques, and through your own website. This allows you to really tailor your products to your city or region. Or you may want to sell wholesale to national retailers to reach the widest range of customers. The options are endless, so think about what styles, materials, and business model match your skills and interests.
Developing Your Product
Your tote bags will be the heart of your business, so putting in the work to design unique, high-quality products is key. Some things to consider: •Focus on stylish but practical designs that appeal to your target audience. Simple prints, patterns, and textures are popular. Or create more intricate designs for a boutique look. •Use high-quality, durable materials that withstand daily use but are still affordable, like canvas, cotton, or faux leather. For a luxury product, consider leather, wool, or natural fibers. •Add custom details that make your totes stand out, like leather handles or straps, internal pockets, reinforced bottoms, or waterproof coatings. •Develop a collection of complementary styles in different sizes. Totes, shoulder bags, and crossbody bags are all popular. A range of options will give customers more to choose from. •Create professional samples and prototypes to photograph for your website and marketing materials. Get feedback from potential customers to refine the designs. •Source all materials and supplies from reputable vendors to ensure good quality at the best prices. Buy in bulk when possible to keep costs down. •Determine how you will distribute your products - selling online, at local retailers, at craft fairs, or a combination. Then you can set your price points accordingly. With stylish, well-made products, competitive prices, and a solid business plan, your tote bag business will be off to a great start. Focus on your unique designs and high quality, and your customers will keep coming back for more!
Business Economics and Finances
To run a successful tote bag business, you need to have a firm grasp on your costs, pricing, and profit margins. Some key things to consider: •Cost of goods sold (COGS): This includes the cost of materials, supplies, and labor for each bag. Aim for a COGS of no more than 50% of your retail price. So if a bag costs $20 in materials and labor to produce, sell it for at least $40. •Pricing strategy: For mass market, keep prices relatively low, around $10-$30 per bag. Boutique styles can go up to $50-$100 or more. Offer discounts for bulk or wholesale orders. You need to price high enough to account for all your costs while still being competitive. •Profit margins: With a 50% COGS, aim for a 30-50% profit margin. So if a bag costs $20 to make, selling for $40 would be a 50% margin. $30 would be a 30% margin. Higher margins mean more profit, but you have to balance that with competitive pricing. •Additional costs: Factor in overhead costs like rent, utilities, marketing, and transportation. You'll also need to account for one-time startup costs to get the business off the ground. Make sure to include all costs in your financial projections. •Financial forecast: Create a 3-year financial forecast including income statements, cash flow, balance sheets, and key metrics and ratios. This will help determine if the business can be viable and profitable. It's also important for funding, loans, and investment. •Funding: Consider using your own savings, taking out a loan, getting a line of credit, crowdfunding, or investor financing to fund your startup costs. Most businesses are not profitable for at least the first year, so adequate funding is critical.
Marketing Your Tote Bag Business
To reach your target customers and build brand awareness, you need an effective marketing strategy for your tote bag business. Some of the top options include: •Search engine optimization (SEO): Optimize your website content for search engines like Google. Use keywords related to your product, location, and target audience. Strong SEO will drive organic traffic to your site from people searching for tote bags and related terms. •Social media marketing: Create business profiles on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. Post photos of your products, share blog posts, run contests and giveaways, and engage with your followers. Collaborate with influencers in your niche to reach new audiences. •Email marketing: Build an email list from your website and social media followers. Send regular newsletters highlighting new products, sales, and promotions. Offer subscriber-only discounts and flash sales. Email is a direct way to reach your customers. •Local event marketing: Apply to sell your tote bags at craft fairs, festivals, and other local events in your area. This allows you to meet customers face to face, get direct feedback, and make sales in person. Offer event-exclusive discounts and promotions to drive traffic to your booth. •Wholesale partnerships: Pitch your tote bags to local boutiques, gift shops, and larger retailers in your area or nationwide. Wholesale allows you to sell higher volumes, though at lower profit margins. Make sure to have a solid pitch deck highlighting your products, brand, and target market. •Grassroots marketing: Don't overlook simple marketing tactics like word-of-mouth referrals, reviews on sites like Yelp and Google My Business, and networking. Tell friends, family, and acquaintances about your new business and give out discount codes for them to share with their networks. With the right mix of digital marketing, local event participation, wholesale, and grassroots strategies, you can build brand visibility and drive sales for your tote bag business. Be consistent and persistent, and keep optimizing and improving your campaigns over time.
Sales Strategies and Fulfillment
To make sales and fulfill orders for your tote bag business, you need to have effective strategies and systems in place. Some key things to consider: •Your own ecommerce website: Build a user-friendly website to sell your products directly to customers. Include high-quality photos, product descriptions, and an easy checkout process. Offer promotions and discounts to drive traffic and sales. •Wholesale partnerships: Pitch local boutiques, gift shops, and larger retailers to carry your tote bags wholesale. Provide samples, marketing materials, and resources to help them sell your products in their stores. Offer wholesale discounts and promotions they can pass onto their customers. •Local events: Apply to sell at craft fairs, festivals, and other events in your area. This allows customers to see, touch, and try on your tote bags in person. Process sales with a mobile card reader, cash, or checks on the spot. Offer show specials to drive interest. •Third-party platforms: Sell your tote bags on sites like Etsy, Amazon Handmade, and Shopify to reach new audiences. These platforms have built-in traffic and handle the ecommerce infrastructure for you, though they do charge fees and commissions on sales. •Order fulfillment: Have a streamlined process to fulfill orders from all your channels. Keep enough inventory on hand to fill orders promptly. Package items carefully and include a handwritten thank you note. Ship orders within 1-2 business days via USPS, UPS, or FedEx. •Customer service: Provide friendly, helpful customer service to support your sales. Respond to questions, issues, and feedback promptly. Offer exchanges or refunds if a customer is not fully satisfied. Strong customer service will build brand loyalty and word-of-mouth promotion. With a multi-channel sales strategy and efficient order fulfillment and customer service, you can build a steady stream of revenue for your tote bag business. Continue optimizing and improving your processes to scale as your business and sales volumes grow over time.
Operations and Execution
To successfully execute your tote bag business operations, you need to establish efficient systems and processes. Some key things to focus on: •Source high-quality materials and supplies from reputable vendors at the best prices. Buy in bulk when possible to keep costs low. Always order more than enough to meet demand and account for delays or backorders. •Streamline your production process to efficiently cut, sew, embroider, print, and assemble your tote bags. Create a standardized process for each style to ensure consistency and quality. Track costs and labor for each step to determine optimal pricing. •Implement tight inventory control procedures. Keep enough materials and finished goods in stock to meet demand, but not too much excess that it ties up capital or storage space. Track inventory levels closely and reorder as needed. Conduct regular inventory counts to ensure accuracy. •Refine and optimize your order fulfillment process, including receiving orders, packaging items, generating shipping labels, and drop-off with carriers. Aim for same-day or next-day fulfillment and shipment when possible. Provide tracking information to customers. •Continuously improve your customer service procedures to promptly and helpfully respond to questions, feedback, issues, and complaints. Offer fair and reasonable return, exchange, or refund policies. Learn from interactions to improve products and the customer experience. •Review key business metrics and financials regularly to monitor the health and growth of your company. Make data-driven decisions to optimize sales, control costs, increase profits, and gain market share. Adjust strategies and operations as needed to achieve your business goals. •Consider business expansion when your company is stable and profitable. You can introduce new products, expand into new markets, open a physical retail space, increase online advertising, or other growth strategies. Expand at a pace that you can manage while maintaining quality and service.
Legal Considerations
Before launching your tote bag business, be sure to research all legal requirements and regulations. Some things to consider: •Business licenses and permits: Requirements vary by location, so check with your city clerk's office. You will typically need a business license or permit to operate. Some areas require additional permits for manufacturing or selling products. •Sales tax collection: If selling in your state, you need to register for a sales tax permit to collect and remit sales tax. Requirements vary in each state, so review the rules for your specific location. •Income taxes: You will need to pay income taxes on the profits from your business. Keep good records of all income and expenses to properly file your business taxes each year. You may need to make quarterly estimated tax payments. •Insurance: Consider business insurance policies like general liability, product liability, and commercial property insurance. These can help protect you from financial loss in the event of a lawsuit, property damage, or other issues. •Trademarks and copyrights: If using a unique business name, logo, or product designs, consider trademarking and copyrighting them to prevent others from copying or using them without permission. •Employees: If hiring staff, be aware of regulations like workers compensation, payroll taxes, minimum wage, overtime pay, and other requirements. Make sure to comply with all laws related to having employees. •Importing goods: If sourcing any materials or products from outside the U.S., review regulations from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. There are specific rules for importing commercial goods.
With stylish, high-quality products, a solid business plan, and strong operations and marketing, you have the foundation to build a successful tote bag business. Find your unique niche in the market and stay focused on your target customers. Sell through a multi-channel strategy, including your own website, local events, wholesale, and third-party platforms. Keep improving your systems and processes to efficiently scale your business over time. If you provide great products and service, keep costs low, and continue optimizing to increase profits, your tote bag business can be a rewarding endeavor.

How to Start a Handbag Business in 2022: The Ultimate Guide

Whatever the reason is that you want to start your own small business, make sure that you should be able to outline it in a business plan from the beginning itself.
According to Statista, the global handbags market has approximately 56 billion USD opportunity. With an expected growth of over 7% annually, it is estimated that it will be a 75 billion USD market in the next couple of years. Thus if you do have an idea about handbags and believe that you can fill a gap in the market, it is a great business opportunity that you can cash in.
Additionally, the United States being one of the top revenue generating countries, now is a perfect time to start your own bag business.
But what exactly do you need to do to get your handbag business idea off the ground?
To help you prepare, we've created this six step guide on how to start a handbag business. Read on to learn everything you need to know.
How To Start a Handbag Business in 6 Steps
- Identify a market opportunity for your handbag business idea
- Define your handbags variety and USP
- Make your business legal
- Determine your overhead
- Market your business
- Don't overextend yourself financially to fund your growth
Step 1: Identify a Market Opportunity for Your Handbag Business Idea
Before you put wheels in motion for your business, the first thing that you need to decide on is the type of business model you want to pursue. This step is important because it will define the budget, target customer persona and marketing strategy. Let's look at the some of the options available to you:
Your own handbag line:
This option is valid if you are a designer yourself or have a business partner who can design stylish handbags. In this option, you will have to do all the heavy lifting yourself.
The entire product cycle will be in your hands. You will have to design, craft, distribute the handbags on your own.
Wholesaling other handbag brand products:
If you have an expertise in business to business sales & marketing, this option is an amazing business opportunity. You can partner with major brands and then sell the products to the retailers while pocketing a decent profit.
Retailing bags from other companies:
If a physical store or an online store is something that you have a passion for, then being a bag retailer is a great option for your business idea. You can get the bags from distributors and then sell them in your store at a decent margin.
Dropshipping:
One of the most popular options today is to start your own dropshipping store. In this type of store, you will be responsible for marketing the bags and every other aspect will be taken care of by the drop shipping supplier.
The biggest drawback from this option is that you won't have any exclusivity in the bag range and the same bags will be available from other stores as well. You will need to be an expert in marketing ( Especially social media marketing ) to generate enough sales to make your bag business worth the effort.
That said, it is also the lowest cost business model wherein you can start in less than 100 dollars.
Private label:
Getting your own private label is also an option that you can consider. In this business model, you will need to find a manufacturer who will be ready to brand the bags in your brand name.
To the consumer, the manufacturer name won't be available and it will be a product that is in your brand name.
Given that you won't have to have an infrastructure setup for manufacturing your bags, this is a great option as you can get your own designs crafted in the workshop or choose from the available options from the manufacturer.
Once you have identified your option, you will have a much better idea of how you want to sell your bags.
Tip: Start small and choose a business model that will help you test your business idea fast. You can always diversify your options later. But if you cannot find a product market fit, there won't be an opportunity for you to make a business out of it.
Step 2: Define Your Handbags Variety and USP
It may look simple, but this step is the hardest one to tackle. Majority of businesses don't get this step right and end up with a failed business.
To get an idea of the step involved, just think about one scenario. You work hard on setting up your business with a proper marketing plan, funding and all required compliances. With this setup you are getting visitors in your store, but they don't become customers by making a purchase.
Will you be happy with such a scenario for your handbag business?
We are sure that nobody would like to be in the above situation. A business without customers is no business at all.
That said, along with everything else the one thing that you must get spot-on is your handbag product offerings. You can pretty much change everything in your business, like tweaking marketing strategies and getting more funding or hiring help. But if your product foundation is shaky, it will be extremely difficult to make your handbag company a success.
You can consider the following product options for your handbag business:
- Designer bags
- Bowler bags
- Duffle bags
- Crossbody handbags
Depending on your decision of business model in step 1, you have a few things to consider. Let's look at some them below:
Your own handbag line
If you have decided to have your own handbags, remember one rule of thumb. Just because you like a design, doesn’t mean your potential customer will do too. There will be a lot of trial and error before you nail down a perfect product market fit for your handbag niche.
To avoid wasting your time and money, it will certainly help to do a proper research of the bags market in your target area. Start by answering at least the following questions:
- Who is your target customer?
- Where do they live?
- How do they shop? Online or in store?
- What price points are a sweet spot?
- How will your bag design be different from the others in the market?
- What is one major feature gap you can fill in your bags?
- What material sells the best? Canvas, Vegan, Leather ?
- Why will a customer buy a bag from you and not from the other stores?
- What's your story?
- Why will the customers tell their friends about your bags?
Once you have answered all these questions, you will be in a much better position to make decisions about many things you will encounter in your business. For example, as a part of your research, you may find out that your target customers prefer buying vegan leather bags and not the animal leather ones. Based on this finding, you can decide on the manufacturing as crafting a handbag using animal leather is completely different from crafting it using the vegan leather material. The vendors that you will need to partner with will also be different based on just this one decision itself.
To give you one more example, you may find out that $19 is a price point that you need to target for a certain design. With this number in mind, you will be able to make decisions on the raw material and accessories you need to select. At such a low price point, it may not make sense to use a YKK zipper and you can try a different zipper brand.
Tip: The more you research, the better the chances of success will be. Take this research as an insurance for your handbag business career.
Selling other brands product via wholesaling or retailing
When deciding to sell other company products, you need to perform research in many different aspects. As the design is not in your control, you will have to select products as per market performance.
You can gauge the success of a design from a particular brand by looking at online reviews, checking the inventory in online stores ( do they all show selling fast, sold out?). You can also visit the local stores and check with the salespeople about their opinion on that particular product.
Basically, you don’t want to get stuck with an inventory that is difficult to sell or isn’t doing that good in the market. Even if the wholesaler has a favorable return policy and is ready to take unsold inventory back, you do end up losing on the revenue that you could have made, if you had chosen another brand and product.
One more thing that you need to consider is that the product shouldn’t be available everywhere. Because if it is, the only way to get a paying customer is by offering the lowest price. Trust us, race to the bottom isn’t something that you want to compete in. You should stay away from it as much as you can. You will need to choose exclusive brands, if possible.
You can also plan to keep accessories such as handbag straps, handbag charms, handbag organization and protection solutions for an increase in revenues.
Step 3: Make Your Business Legal
Depending on where you are located and the business model you decide, you may be legally required to obtain certain permits and licenses before you can start your own handbag business. This is an important step and you would want to make sure that all the things are covered and there won't be any problem in the future.
To begin with, you can get the information from the local chamber of commerce. Just a quick visit should get you on the right track.
Two things that you will need to consider are listed below:
Registering a business name
Once you have identified a name for your business and checked its availability, you will need to register it with the local secretary of state. If you are thinking of going really big with your business and see it going national in the future, you will need to get a trademark as soon as possible.
Tip: Hire a brand consultant to help you get creative and set you up for an outstanding business name.
Decide on a business entity
As an entrepreneur, you need to follow a certain organizational structure to be compliant with the regulations set by the government authorities. This structure affects tax, compliance and other legal requirements, it is an important step to tick when starting a business.
You need to plan ahead and choose from the following options:
- A sole proprietorship
- Limited liability company (LLC)
- General partnership
- Corporation
Generally, in the beginning a sole proprietorship is an obvious choice and a popular legal entity structure. It is the simplest and easiest way to get started. You can transition to another entity structure as your business grows.
Consider business insurance
It is a good idea to get insurance from the beginning itself. This way, you and your business will be protected from any legal claims arising from the functioning of your handbag business. Some of the insurances you can consider are following:
- Product liability insurance
- General liability insurance
- Workers compensation
- Unemployment and disability insurance
Tip: Consider consulting an attorney or a qualified professional for this step, as their experience will be extremely valuable. They will be able to help you with everything that you need to have to be compliant with everything.
Step 4: Determine Your Overhead
You know already that launching and scaling your handbag business will involve spending a lot of money. To keep your business in good financial standing, understanding the type of costs is an essential part, when planning for your business.
You will need to understand what you will have to pay right away, what can wait and what will be a recurring expense. Once you know these costs, you will have a much better idea of your road to profitability and thus be able to secure loans and attract investment as required.
The different types of costs that you will need to consider are as following:
- Fixed costs: These costs remain the same, no matter how much you sell. They will remain constant and are easiest to account for.
- Variable costs: These costs go up or down depending on your sales volume and other business activity. If you wish you can adjust these costs as the need arises.
- Marginal costs: These are incremental costs that will be incurred when creating an additional unit of your handbags products.
- Sunk costs: These are the costs that have been incurred and can’t be recovered. Such as the cost of equipment or raw materials that can’t be returned back.
Step 5: Market Your Business
Once you have got the product ready and have your shop ( online, physical or both) all set to serve customers, the next step is to get the word out. The success of your business will now depend on how well you can do marketing for your business.
Before you can start writing your marketing plan, you need to get some marketing fundamentals sorted out first. These are also called as the four Ps of marketing:
- Product: Along with the bags, you will need to see the packaging and branding aspects. These components are value addons that the customer is not buying directly. But are very much responsible for the value perception and loyalty.
- Price: This will depend on the perceived value of your product in the eyes of the customer. If the perceived value is less than the selling price, you will have a lot of difficulty in selling your bags.
- Promotion: Consider where you will be promoting your handbags. Will it be just digital marketing? Will you also use out of home marketing channels?
- Place: You need to find out where the customers expect to find the bags that you have to sell. Do they expect to find them in stores and not purchase them online? Are they okay in buying them online?
Once you identify the place that they expect to find such bags, how will you make sure that your business is put in their consideration set.
After you have a clear understanding of the above fundamentals of marketing, you can start marketing your bag business. Here are some marketing channels to consider. Just remember to apply the 4Ps of marketing relevant to the specific channel, before you even start your marketing campaigns
- Email marketing
- PPC marketing such as Google Ads, Facebook Ads
- Instagram marketing
- Tiktok marketing
- Local guides
- Online review platforms
All the hard work you put into the marketing, along with the meticulous planning you have done in setting up your business, will do wonders and you will surely be a proud owner of a thriving handbag business.
Step 6: Don't Overextend Yourself Financially to Fund Your Growth
As you can see, starting a handbag business doesn’t need a huge investment and if you plan it well, it can be started with minimum setup costs. However, as in the case of any business, it is very easy to get lost in a trap and waste money.
Be vigilant and keep looking for any financial mistakes in your expenses. Don't get carried away by what the competitor is doing and follow them blindly. What Louis Vuitton offers as a value add on their $2000 bag isn’t something you can offer on a $29 bag in your store.
The real customers understand the difference and have their expectations calibrated as well. You just need to offer them the best product and service at that price point.
That said, there will always be a few investments that you will need to make for future success. These will not give returns right away and thus are possible only if you have money to spare. For example, when setting up a handbag store, you may need to invest in interior and other setup. These costs run in thousands of dollars and will take some time for you to recover.
Additionally, you will need to spend money on licensing, registration, professional fees, store rent and many other expenses. Your own business will start giving you revenues, once the business is set up and the customers are coming in. But until that happens, you will have to cushion these expenses on your own.
If you think that you will need help with the funds, you can consider the following options for your funding:
- Friends and family
- Business loans
- Business lines of credit
- Business credit cards
- Bootstrapping
- Debt financing
- Crowdfunding
- Angel investment
The Bottom Line : Starting Your Own Handbag Business
Starting a business may feel overwhelming to begin with. But, If you plan it well and complete each step carefully, it will become easier as you move to the next step.
Just make sure you never stop being on the learning curve. There will be a lot to learn from the customers, investors and your own trust network.
Make time to attend exhibitions, meetups and networking opportunities. It will help you in getting to know a lot of other entrepreneurs that you can reach out to.
We hope that the steps above will help you in your entrepreneurship journey. We wish you the best of luck and can’t wait to hear the stories of what you’ll build.

What is a School Business Plan?
A business plan provides a snapshot of your school as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategies for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.
Why You Need a Business Plan for a School
If you’re looking to start a school or grow your existing school, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your school to improve your chances of success. Your school business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.
Sources of Funding for Schools
With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for schools are donations and gifts, tuition, personal savings, credit cards, bank loans, and angel investors. When it comes to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to ensure that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for schools.

How to write a business plan for a school.
If you want to start a school or expand your current one, you need a business plan. The guide below details the necessary information for how to write each essential component of your school business plan.
Executive Summary
Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.
The goal of your executive summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the kind of school you are running and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a school that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of schools?
Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan.
- Give a brief overview of the school industry.
- Discuss the type of school you are operating.
- Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers.
- Provide a snapshot of your marketing strategy. Identify the key members of your team.
- Offer an overview of your financial plan.
Company Overview
In your company overview, you will detail the type of school you are operating.
For example, you might specialize in one of the following types of schools:
- Private K-12 school : this type of school typically charges tuition, and may be affiliated with a religious organization, or specialize in a particular learning method.
- Charter school: this type of school offers primary or secondary education for a tuition, and may receive some public funding, and/or donations. These schools require their students to take state-mandated exams.
- Special subject school: this type of school specializes in teaching a specific subject, such as driving, first-aid, self-defense, fine arts, language, or general tutoring.
- Preschool: this type of school typically serves children who are aged 3 and 4. These schools prepare young children to enter formal education, and are funded by some combination of tuition, donations, and government grants.
In addition to explaining the type of school you will operate, the company overview needs to provide background on the business.
Include answers to questions such as:
- When and why did you start the business?
- What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of students served, the number of students accepted into elite formal education institutions, etc.
- Your legal business Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.
Industry Analysis
In your industry or market analysis, you need to provide an overview of the school industry.
While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.
First, researching the school industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.
Secondly, market research can improve your marketing strategy, particularly if your analysis identifies market trends.
The third reason is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.
The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your school business plan:
- How big is the school industry (in dollars)?
- Is the market declining or increasing?
- Who are the key competitors in the market?
- Who are the key suppliers in the market?
- What trends are affecting the industry?
- What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
- What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential target market for your school? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.
Customer Analysis
The customer analysis section of your school business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.
The following are examples of customer segments: families with elementary-aged children, families with high-school-aged children, families with preschool children.
As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of school you operate. Clearly, families with high schoolers would respond to different marketing promotions than families with preschoolers, for example.
Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, including a discussion of the ages, genders, locations, and income levels of the potential customers you seek to serve.
Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can recognize and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis
Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.
Direct competitors are other schools.
Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t directly competing with your product or service. This includes public schools, virtual schools, and families who do homeschooling. You need to mention such competition as well.
For each such competitor, provide an overview of their business and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as
- What types of students do they serve?
- What type of school are they?
- What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
- What are they good at?
- What are their weaknesses?
With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.
The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:
- Will you provide specialized instruction, either in subject or in method?
- Will you offer courses or services that your competition doesn’t?
- Will you provide better customer service?
- Will you offer better pricing?
Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.
Marketing Plan
Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a school business plan, your marketing strategy should include the following:
Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of school that you documented in your company overview. Then, detail the specific products or services you will be offering. For example, will you provide religious-focused K-8 education, college preparatory courses, or single-subject instruction like driving or fine arts?
Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your plan, you are presenting the courses and/or extracurricular activities you offer and their prices.
Place : Place refers to the site of your school. Document where your company is situated and mention how the site will impact your success. For example, is your school located in a growing neighborhood, in the city center, or will you operate purely online? Discuss how your site might be the ideal location for your customers.
Promotions : The final part of your school marketing plan is where you will document how you will drive potential customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:
- Advertise in local papers, radio stations and/or magazines
- Reach out to websites
- Distribute flyers
- Engage in email marketing
- Advertise on social media platforms
- Improve the SEO (search engine optimization) on your website for targeted keywords
Operations Plan
While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.
Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your school, including answering calls, planning and delivering instruction, applying for grants, fundraising, performing administrative tasks, overseeing instructors, handling discipline, scheduling and monitoring extracurricular activities, etc.
Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to enroll your Xth student, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your school to a new city.
Management Team
To demonstrate your school’s potential to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.
Ideally, you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing schools. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.
If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act as mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in running a school or experience with public school administration or who has served on a public school board.
Financial Plan
Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statements.
Income Statement
An income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenue and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.
In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you enroll 100 or 1,000 students per semester, and/or offer extracurricular activities? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.
Balance Sheets
Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your school, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a lender writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.
Cash Flow Statement
Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and ensure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.
When creating your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a school:
- Cost of equipment and supplies
- Payroll or salaries paid to staff
- Business insurance
- Other start-up expenses (if you’re a new business) like legal expenses, permits, computer software, and equipment
Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your school location lease or a list of elective courses or extracurricular activities you will offer.
Writing a business plan for your school is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will understand the school industry, your competition, and your customers. You will develop a marketing strategy and will understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful school.

The Ultimate School Tote Bag Guide: Where Durability Meets Style
April Cole | December 14, 2023
No matter how much we grow, there is no age limit to education! From our childhood years, our school bags have always been with us as we create beautiful school memories. Our adventure begins in elementary school, extends to high school, and perhaps continues to university. After that, our school bags become an indispensable part of our lives, sharing our most precious memories on our backs. How should we choose a school tote bag for long-lasting use, considering both durability and stylish and fun designs that speak to our fashion sense?
Let's continue our journey through school by exploring these versatile and multi-functional products together!
What Should an Ideal School Tote Bag Be Like?
Each bag is carried by attaching it to different parts of the body through straps. Therefore, every feature, from the ergonomics of the straps to the material of the bag, should appeal to the organic connection formed between us and the bags. In other words, it should provide us with ease of carrying, be practical, lightweight, and body-friendly. School tote bags are products that we have used the most since our childhood. Therefore, they are designed for both adults and young children to carry. Especially for children in the developmental stage, where their bones are flexible, the primary criterion in bag selection should be balanced distribution of weight on the spine.
An ideal school or teacher tote bags should avoid carrying compartments that concentrate the weight in a specific area. Instead, pockets, additional compartments, and designated spaces for large loads should be distributed evenly and equally on the surface of the bag. A well-designed backpack should provide support to the student's spine. Some backpacks may have padding and supportive materials added to the back for comfort. These fillings not only support the back but also take on the weight inside the bag, making it suitable for prolonged use. In addition to these extra padding materials, straps are also effective elements in both comfort and weight distribution.
Adjustable shoulder straps should be adjustable according to the user's neck and body structure. Support padding can be used more for young users. The distance between the shoulders should be kept short to prevent the straps from easily slipping, but at the same time, broad straps may be preferred to avoid putting pressure on the neck. Let's not forget that teacher tote bags are not only used in school; these versatile products also cater to different areas such as outdoor activities, sports, travel, and daily use. Therefore, the material used in bag production should be suitable for both indoor and outdoor conditions.
Waterproof and durable materials such as polyester can make the bag more elastic, increasing the amount of load it can carry. Additionally, being resistant to dirt, these materials protect the contents of your bag from external factors. Therefore, lightweight and functional materials such as nylon and polyester are preferred in ideal school bags. However, an ideal fabric can be ruined by a poorly made stitch without careful consideration and attention to the usage area.
The primary purpose of school tote bags is not to provide an accessory that complements clothing fashion but to carry your belongings or loads for long-term use. Therefore, attention should be paid to the extremely robust stitching of the bag. Double stitches or reinforced stitches ensure better weight-bearing capacity of the bag. Quality fabric, well-distributed padding and support, sturdy stitches… Let's say we have chosen each element in the best way for physical health and durability.
Now let's look at the functionality of the bag. Remember, "the more pockets and compartments, the more functionality" does not mean. Sometimes poorly designed pockets or improperly placed compartments can make your job more difficult rather than providing convenience and functionality. In addition to the main compartment, different compartments such as front pocket, side pockets, or organization compartments help students store their belongings in an organized manner. A special compartment for users who need to carry laptops or tablets ensures the safe storage of devices. Pay attention to the placement of these compartments, covering every part of the bag in a balanced and equal manner. Small pockets on teacher bags should also be placed on the right and left sides of the bags in equal volume and quantity.
Speaking of weight distribution, an ideal backpack should also consider pressure on the shoulders, neck, and waist. Waist pressure reduces the load on the shoulders by carrying the weight of the bag to the waist. Adjustability allows customization of the bag according to the needs of different users. The part of the bag carrying the weight should be as close to the ground as possible, as the weight on the waist increases accordingly. Therefore, it is important for the strap length not to exceed the coccyx for proper weight distribution. Straps should also be positioned to average the space between the shoulder and neck to prevent them from slipping off.
So far, we have discussed the back and straps of our teacher bag. However, let's not forget that the essential part carrying the load is the bottom, the base of the bag. While the strap and waist area are important for our health, a strong base is essential for the bag's own health. To ensure this, additional materials can be added to the bottoms of the bags, or elevating accessories such as wheels or feet can be added. The feet under the bag do not directly touch the ground when you place the bag, helping the bag last longer.
Bags, like your wallets, are personalized items, and they should be designed to include items that need to be kept safe. Easy-to-open bags with wide mouths that can easily drop items inside are inadequate in terms of security. The ability to attach locks to zippers increases the security of valuable items inside the bag. Also, if you carry valuable technological products or valuable materials, you may consider theft-resistant designs that have become widespread in recent times.
Now that we have gone through the material quality of your teacher tote, the turn comes to the matter of fashion. Well, your tote bags might be quite useful and practical, an ideal teacher tote should also be appealing . That is, it should reflect your style in the most fashionable way. To this end, manufacturers consider adding extra decorative pockets, sections, or patches that can also be customized. For your own design preferences, you can attach broochs, pins, or crochets on your bags. Besides, you can opt for canvas school bags, which are suitable for print.

These items, which we share our school days with, later assist us in carrying various items in different areas and can also be companions during our travels. However, for long-lasting use, our bags should be made of tightly stitched, flexible fabric. Strap distances for weight balancing, support paddings on the back, and pocket distribution are also important factors. Considering the materials placed inside, a backpack should not exceed 10% to 15% of a child's body weight. Particularly in preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school, it is important to plan the weight not exceeding 10%, and for older age groups, it should not surpass 15%.

Best overall: The North Face Recon Backpack
When searching for the best college backpacks, we look for durability, functionality, and style. Undoubtedly, The North Face Recon Backpack is the perfect combination of everything you need.
It features a medium-size main compartment with a laptop sleeve, a front mesh pocket filled with practical separations for all of your smaller devices and writing utensils, and two water bottle pockets on the sides. One of the best features of this backpack is the chest and back clips meant to alleviate back pain when carrying heavier loads, and the shoulder straps are well padded as well for optimal support. We also include the Recon in our guide to the best backpacks for students , as it makes a great confidence-boosting gift for pupils heading off to a new school. In terms of style, its minimal design and array of colorways make this a versatile choice for those who use a backpack for work or when traveling in addition to on campus.
Most comfortable: Patagonia Refugio Backpack 28L
Patagonia is one of our favorite B-corp retail companies and we appreciate it's eco-conscious approach to outdoor gear. What we love most about its Refugio backpack is how plush the padding feels on the shoulders and its sternum strap that balances heavy cargo, preventing extra pressure on the spine.
The Refugio's recycled nylon structure makes a great candidate for the best college backpacks because of its high-quality feel, protective laptop and tablet sleeve, and side pockets. It also has a small outer pocket that's in the perfect spot for quickly grabbing something like a sweater or snacks.
Best for travel: JanSport Main Campus FX
Out of the best college backpacks, JanSport's Main Campus FX is a top rated travel backpack . It's perfect for a student who's carrying a 15-inch laptop with a heavy load of books and random accessories like headphones, a water bottle, beauty products, and assorted writing utensils. The padded straps make carrying its weight a bit breezier. Its dedicated laptop pocket is nicely padded, and there are two other full-size compartments, making room for anything and everything. It also has a keychain in the front pocket to keep your dorm or apartment keys handy. JanSport's Right Pack is also a helpful but downgraded option that's probably best for the techie who has gone paperless.
The Main Campus FX is great for students when they're in school and even after they graduate. Not only is it built perfectly for carrying books and laptops, but it's also versatile, making it easy to use for everything from classes to road trips to the gym.
Most stylish: Dagne Dover The Dakota
If you like a minimalistic design with ample space and clever compartments, this neoprene bag will be your saving grace. The Dakota comes in three sizes, all of which are water-resistant, shock-absorbent, and complete with sleek straps. Inside, there are pockets galore, so no space is wasted. The laptop compartment in the large version fits a 16-inch laptop, which is bigger than the average college device. The main compartment holds up to 20 liters and has a mesh tablet pocket, five medium-sized pockets, and a convenient detachable pouch. Two exterior pockets can carry your water bottle and a stash of snacks.
We can confidently say this luxury backpack fits everything you'd ever need: a laptop, tablet, textbooks, water bottle, notebook, snacks, and a spare pair of shoes. On the outside, it looks chic and simple, but inside, it gives you all the power to be your most organized self. It even has a nearly-invisible slip pocket by the handle where you can keep small items like a snack or headphones.
One of our favorite features is the luggage handle sleeve that allows you to slide the backpack onto any carry-on you're wheeling around. Read more in our full Dagne Dover Dakota backpack review .
Best convertible: Lo & Sons Edgemont
Sometimes a tote is more convenient to access your belongings at a moment's notice, but the one-shoulder design is bound to cause more discomfort than two straps. Instead of deciding between the two, the Edgemont combines them into one convertible bag. "The backpack straps have clips that attach to loops at the bottom of the backpack (which hide away into their own pockets when not in use). If you want to use the bag as a tote, just un-clip the straps and fold them into the back compartment. They bulge a tiny bit, but I barely noticed them, and neither will anyone else.
When using the bag as a backpack, the top straps act like any standard backpack top handle. In tote mode, they're the main straps you can carry in your hand or over your shoulder. They're very sturdy and also comfortable to hold." — Connie Chen, former senior reporter
Best minimalist: Vera Bradley Campus Backpack
For the college student with a maturing style and an appreciation for a spacious bag, this may be a great stylistic and functional choice. It has a gently padded 15-inch laptop compartment along with two side pockets for a water bottle. It has a sizable 25-liter main compartment containing two mesh slip pockets and outer pockets to store smaller items. It zips smoothly, has comfortable straps ergonomically designed for women, and a luggage handle on the back.
This is one of the best college backpacks that combines utility with a minimalistic look. The small brand tag is monochromatic and located on the side, so it blends in with the rest of the backpack. Once you open its pockets, you get a pop of paisley pattern and personality.
Most spacious: L.L. Bean Comfort Carry Pack
This backpack is all about functionality, protecting your laptop, and basic storage. The Comfort Carry Pack has a spacious 30-liter capacity, but not an extravagance of pockets. There's a main compartment with a laptop pocket as well as a second compartment with an organizer for pencils. Made with a chest belt, hip belt, and padded straps, this is a great choice for going between school and other activities. The bungee cords on the front are also a perfect place to store one last bulky item, like a jacket or sweatshirt.
Best gym bag: Lululemon Everyday Backpack 2.0
Lululemon's lightweight Everyday Backpack does exactly what a college backpack needs to do without too many frills. The wider-set bag has a 23-liter capacity and a padded laptop pocket that fits a 16-inch device. It's made with a water-repellent fabric, two side pockets for water bottles, inner mesh pockets, and a small outer pocket. It has a luggage sleeve and the minimalistic logo doesn't scream "I love Lululemon." While not made of the thickest material, the popular fitness brand's Everyday Backpack is designed with exactly what a college student needs. The sleek shape and neutral colorways also mean it can go with lots of different looks, making this one of the best college backpacks for toting around anything from gym clothes to textbooks.
Best storage: Carhartt Medium Pack + 3 Can Insulated Cooler
The Carhartt Medium Pack, bundled with the three-can insulated cooler, might be one of the best college backpacks for hauling books and lunch. The backpack is made from Cordura, an incredibly durable ripstop material that's also been treated to be water-repellent. The outside of the bag features a mesh pocket for a water bottle, a Hook-n-Haul system for adding extra items like the insulated cooler, and air-mesh shoulder padding. The inside of the bag has plenty of practical storage compartments. From the 15-inch laptop sleeve to the fleece-lined eyewear compartment, you can keep all of your belongings organized and easily accessible.
"My favorite feature is the attached cooler. It can fit up to three 12-ounce cans, but it's also the perfect spot to keep snacks or a lunch for days when you have a packed schedule of classes. And when you're not on campus, it's perfect for hiking, trips to the beach, or anywhere else you'd want to enjoy a cold drink while on the go. It's also easily removable if you prefer to carry the backpack without it." — Amir Ismael, style editor
Best for taller students: Herschel Little America Backpack
The Herschel Little America backpack is a classic carryall with a deceiving name. With its spacious 25 liters and nicely padded laptop compartment, the pack is made to help you carry everything you need for school while sporting a timeless style. The main compartment is like a huge pit where you can fit a lot of things: books, snacks, tech, and more. It also has two small side pockets on the inside. Little America is easily expandable and easily collapsible. The single outer pocket is perfect for storing quick things you may need throughout your day.
The backside is thoroughly padded for comfortable carrying. Though, personally, we think this backpack works best on taller people since it's 19.25 inches long. On an average-height woman, the bag is a bit overwhelming on a shorter back.
Best budget: Carhartt 25L Classic Laptop Backpack
We've tested the now-retired Carhartt Classic Work Pack, but thankfully, the 25 L Classic Laptop Backpack is an excellent upgrade. It's water-repellent, durable, and accommodates a medium-size cargo load. Thanks to its front zippered pocket with keyring clip and separated mesh slots for your phone, notebooks, or pens, you won't lose any of your smaller items at the bottom of the bag. It has a dedicated 15-inch laptop sleeve at the back of the main compartment, and this new model even comes with side pockets of water bottle storage.
If you're a brand loyalist, this is one of the best college backpacks for you because it comes in the classic brown colorway that the Michigan-made workwear brand is recognized for.
Best sporty: The North Face Borealis Backpack
The North Face is known for making durable and high-quality gear and the Borealis Backpack, one of the brand's most classic styles, is no different.
The 28-liter size fits just about everything you need for class and then some. It has the standard features: a nicely padded laptop pocket, a spacious main compartment, side pockets for water bottles, a small fleece-lined outer pocket, and a bigger outer pocket with pockets and places for pens. It's built with a chest and hip belt, making it useful for hikes too.
There's also a small but thoughtful feature to appreciate: U-pull zippers that make unzipping any of its pockets 10 times easier. The Borealis Backpack may not have a bunch of hidden compartments in the niftiest spaces, but it does what it needs to with quality materials made to last a long while. And for the same price, the Women's Borealis is specifically designed to fit a slighter build.
Best expandable: Fjällräven Kånken Laptop 15"
I see this backpack all the time on my college campus, and here's why: The compact rectangular design can be expanded, making it especially versatile. The sleek look makes this a functional piece as well as a nice addition to almost any outfit. It has three pockets: a laptop pocket, main compartment, and outer pouch. The laptop pocket is well padded and the zipper is tucked away in the back. The straps are nice and soft, though oriented differently than the typical backpack, and it has two side pouches that can be used to store a water bottle and possibly even an umbrella. Read more about its upgraded version in our full Fjällräven Tree Kånken review .
Best for outdoors: Eddie Bauer Adventurer Backpack 2.0
We tested Eddie Bauer's previous Adventurer backpack, but their 2.0 version is even better. It stands out as one of the best college backpacks because of its versatility and durability. They aren't kidding when they say this backpack is for adventures — it has a hydration-compatible compartment and two water bottle pockets for your next hike to campus. As for its functionality, this backpack has a unique side access 17" laptop pocket and small fleece-lined front pockets for your smaller items. This water-repellent bag is built to battle with you all through college and after.

Part of what the team of business consultant did was to work with the management of our organization in conducting a SWOT analysis for Rolland Gyros International Private School. Here is a summary from the result of the SWOT analysis that was conducted on behalf of Rolland Gyros International Private School;
As a private school, our core strength lies in the power of our team; our workforce. We have a team with excellent qualifications and experience in the educational sector. We are well positioned in a community with the right demography and we know we will attract loads of students from the first day we open our doors and welcome students for enrollment.
As a new private school in Ashville – North Carolina, it might take some time for our organization to break into the market and gain acceptance via reputation in the already saturated education cum private schools industry; that is perhaps our major weakness.
- Opportunities:
The opportunities in the education cum private schools industry is massive considering the number of parents who would want their wards to perform excellently well in their education and go ahead to be admitted in Ivy league colleges. As a standard and international private school, Rolland Gyros International Private School is ready to take advantage of any opportunity that comes her way.
Every business faces a threat or challenge at any part of the life cycle of the business. These threats can be external or internal. This shows the importance of a business plan, because most threats or challenges are to be anticipated and plans put in place to cushion what effect they might bring to the private school.
Some of the threats that we are likely going to face as a private school operating in the United States of America are unfavorable government policies that might affect private schools, the arrival of a competitor within our location of operations and global economic downturn which usually affects spending / purchasing power.
There is hardly anything we can do as regards these threats other than to be optimistic that things will continue to work for our good.
7. MARKET ANALYSIS
- Market Trends
The trend in the private school line of business is that the key to attracting students is the educational performance and the pass rate of their students in national exams. Any private school that has good records will always thrive. The demand for private schools is driven by the fact that most public cum government owned schools cannot accommodate every students or potential students in a given geographical location.
In some cases, students with special needs cannot cope in public schools hence the need for private schools. The economic downturn hasn’t really affected this industry, especially in countries that believe in the efficacy of education.
The areas you would need to spend heavily on is in ensuring that your school is up to standard, your advertisements, and on insurance policy cover. Lastly, it is trendier to find private schools engaging in extra – curricular activities and as a matter of fact, a private school that thrives in sports can leverage on that to attract students who are sports inclined.

Since bag making goes beyond handbags for women you will have to decide on the type of bag to make. Who would your bag be made for, would it be for only women, men, kids and so on.
You have to pick the one that is convenient for you.
Most times doing market research on the different bag making ideas is important as it will help aid your decision.
These bag ideas may include tote bags, school bags, messenger bags for men, clutch, hobo bags and so on.
Do a Research
Once you have been able to decide on the kind of bag you would be making then it is time to do market research to know if it would be a lucrative idea.
This research will also help you know who your targeted audience are.
Depending on the type of bag you have decided to make your audience might be younger people in their 20s or those in their 40s and beyond.
Write A Business Plan
A lot of things will come to your mind when you intend to start a new business but a business plan helps you keep your idea in perfect shape.
Your business plan will include your goals for the business, the research on you taken to know the market size of the business, how much you are willing to invest in the business and other relevant information’s.
Learn How To Make Bag
No one is born with the gift of making bag so you will have to learn the art of bag making.
You can attend skill acquisition seminars where they teach people how to make bags or simply serve as an apprentice in a bag making company.
With this, you will learn the trade first hand and gain experience before you launch your own business.
Depending on how far you are in learning it should not take you up to 6 months to 1 year to learn the trade completely.
Choose A Business Location
Once you are through learning how to make bag then you can start your very own bag making business.
For this to happen you will need a place where you would store your equipment and start manufacturing.
The good thing about this business is that you can start it anywhere. If you are unable to rent a shop you can as well start right from the comfort of your home.
Register Your Business
If you are thinking of doing this business long term and create your unique brand, You have to register a business name.
All you need is an attractive business name as it is what most people will be seeing not you.
You can register a business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for less than ₦50,000.
Get The Necessary Equipment’s
The first thing to consider before getting any equipment of any sort would be where you would be getting your raw materials from.
If you are into making leather bags, then getting high-quality raw material should be your top goal. This would involve you doing some more research as to where to source your materials.
after this, you can go ahead to start getting the various equipment’s. These include:
Sewing machine
Finger presser
Walking machine foot
Thick treads
Machine needles
Tape measurement
Travel iron with steam function
Ironing board
Fabric glue
Rotary cutter
1/4in basting tapes
Sewing clips
Start Manufacturing
Once everything has been put in place then it’s time to start manufacturing your bags. This is where the creative side of you will be brought to life. You can mix materials so as to get a perfect design.
Get A Fixed Price
Having to fix price for your products can sometimes be difficult as you won’t want to fix a price that will be too expensive for people to buy or cheap that you will make little or no profit.
For you to get a fixed price, you will have to first figure out the total amount used in producing one bag and decide how much profit you intend to make.
For example, if it costs you ₦10,000 to manufacture one bag you can put your profit at ₦3,000 making the fixed price ₦13,000.
One other thing you should know about pricing is that if you are new to the market it would be very difficult to sell your products at a high price.
Open A Store
Once everything has been put in place and you are ready to enter the market you can then think of various ways you can promote your products to get customers to buy from you.
If you decide to use the traditional means of opening a shop and displaying your items for people to purchase which is good or you can decide to go online and open an e-commerce website where people can buy your products online.
Read Why Nigerian Youths Needs Digital Skills.
For me, the best route to take would be to open an e-commerce website where you are able to market your products to a larger audience.
If you find it difficult to open an e-commerce website, you can sign up as a merchant for top e-commerce websites in Nigeria such as jumia.com.ng, konga.com, Jiji.ng and so. You will be able to display your items and get people to buy from you.
If you are able to run both an offline and online store for your item that would be better.
People are not just going to start coming to your store immediately you open up which is why you will have to advertise your business.
There are various ways you can promote your products and they include: word of mouth, advertising on newspaper, radio, TV, social media and so on.

One natural gas transport plan killed in New Jersey as another forges ahead
Taylor McFarland, a project manager with the Sierra Club speaks at a press conference in Keyport N.J., on Monday, May 6, 2024, to celebrate the cancellation of a natural gas pipeline project that would have run through the bay en route to New York City. But a different project to carry liquefied natural gas through Pennsylvania and New Jersey for export to other nations is moving forward. (AP Photo/Wayne Parry)[ASSOCIATED PRESS/Wayne Parry]
KEYPORT, N.J. (AP) — A major pipeline that would have moved natural gas through New Jersey and under two bays to New York has been killed, but another plan to transport liquefied gas from Pennsylvania by tanker truck is moving forward.
Environmentalists who had fought both projects reacted Monday to the mixed bag they were handed on Friday when the two proposals took differing pathways with federal regulators.
That was the day that Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Williams Companies, which owns a nearly 10,000-mile (16,000-kilometer) expanse of pipelines called Transco, allowed its Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline project to end. Williams told the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission it was allowing a key construction application to expire, saying it would not seek an extension for it.
The decision heartened a wide group of environmental and community groups who had fought the proposal for eight years, saying it would further the burning of fossil fuels and contribute to climate change, while also degrading air and water quality and creating safety concerns in communities along its route.
Cindy Zipf, executive director of Clean Ocean Action, called the development “an extraordinary victory, a David and Goliath moment.”

Using the project’s acronym, she said, “NESE has gasped its last gassy breath. It means the project has died, and we won!”
In a statement to The Associated Press on Monday, Williams confirmed it is no longer pursuing a certificate from the federal agency that would allow it to continue the project.
“While Williams continues to believe in the fundamentals of the Northeast Supply Enhancement project and its ability to provide a cleaner and more affordable alternative to costly heating oil for consumers, at this time, we have decided not to pursue an extension of the certificate,” it said.
It would have included a gas-fired compressor station in Franklin Township, and the installation of more than 23 miles (37 kilometers) of pipeline through the Raritan and Lower New York bays en route to the Rockaway section of Queens in New York City.
Also on Friday, two companies said they remain committed to their proposed project to liquefy natural gas and transport it through Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Delaware River Partners and Bradford County Real Estate Partners told the same agency that they do not intend to cancel a facility in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, to liquefy natural gas and transport it to an export facility in Gibbstown, New Jersey, by tanker truck instead of by rail as originally proposed. Last September, federal regulators suspended authorization to transport liquefied natural gas by rail.
“The last thing we need is even more dangerous methane gas extracted from Pennsylvania, shipped through our communities by truck, and exported overseas,” said Patrick Grenter, a campaign director with the Sierra Club. “This decision is unnecessary and reckless, and the Sierra Club is prepared to continue fighting this project until it is officially canceled.”
The companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
But in a filing to the agency on Friday, Bradford said its Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, facility is designed to not need rail cars, and is “unimpacted” by the federal moratorium on such transport. For that reason, the company is proceeding with its plans, it wrote.

Usps accepting non-perishable food donations on saturday for stamp out hunger food drive, those who want to participate in the drive can leave donations in a bag by their mailbox on saturday.
Ivan Herrera , Digital Journalist
SAN ANTONIO – United States Postal Service letter carriers will be doing more than just delivering mail this Saturday. As part of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, they will collect food donations to benefit local pantries.
May 11 marks the 32nd anniversary of the food drive held every second Saturday in May.

“Currently, more than 44 million Americans are unsure where their next meal will come from. More than 13 million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. Nearly 5.5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help,” the USPS said in a news release.
USPS said food banks get a majority of donations during the holidays, and many pantries are depleted by the spring.
Those who want to participate in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive can leave non-perishable food donations in a bag by their mailbox on Saturday, and letter carriers will do the rest.
USPS said the drive has collected more than 1.9 billion pounds of food over its 32-year history.

2. Products & Services Offered by Your Tote Bag Business.
The next step is to outline your products and services for your tote bag business.
When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:
- What is my business?
- What are the products and/or services that I offer?
- Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
- How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
- How will I market my products and services?
You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.
3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.
If you don't have a marketing plan for your tote bag business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

- Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
- How can their experience with your tote bag business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

- How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
- Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
- Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
- How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

- What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

4. Write Your Operational Plan.
Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.
In it, you should list:
- The equipment and facilities needed
- Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
- Financial requirements for each step
- Milestones & KPIs
- Location of your business
- Zoning & permits required for the business
What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a tote bag business?
To run a tote bag business, you will need a few key pieces of equipment, supplies, and permits. These include:
- Tote bag production equipment and supplies
- Packaging and labeling equipment
- A permit to operate your business (depending on location)
- Business licenses and permits for business activities (if applicable)
You may also need to hire and train staff to manage the tote bag production and provide customer service.
5. Management & Organization of Your Tote Bag Business.
The second part of your tote bag business plan is to develop a management and organization section.
This section will cover all of the following:
- How many employees you need in order to run your tote bag business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
- The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
- How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!
6. Tote Bag Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.
This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.
Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:
Startup Costs
Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a tote bag business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a tote bag business.
Running & Operating Costs
Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.
Marketing & Sales Expenses
You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your tote bag business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.
7. Financial Plan & Projections
A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your tote bag business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.
Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your tote bag business plan:
- Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
- Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
- Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
- Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
- Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
- Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

Biden Cancels $6.1 Billion in Debt for Former Art Institute Students
The announcement covers 317,000 former students and marks another step in the administration’s student loan relief efforts.
By Zach Montague
Reporting from Washington
The Biden administration on Wednesday canceled more than $6 billion in student debt for 317,000 people who attended the Art Institutes , a now-defunct network of for-profit colleges that President Biden said “knowingly misled” students.
After a review of lawsuits brought by state attorneys general against the schools and their parent company, Education Management Corporation, the Education Department found that the Art Institutes falsified job placement figures in advertisements and misled prospective students with inflated salary expectations.
In one case the department highlighted, an Art Institute campus in Florida appeared to have included the tennis star Serena Williams’s annual income in its graduate salary projections after she had attended classes there.
“This institution falsified data, knowingly misled students and cheated borrowers into taking on mountains of debt without leading to promising career prospects at the end of their studies,” President Biden said in a statement.
He also took a swipe at former President Donald J. Trump, whom he accused of ignoring the influence of predatory for-profit schools on students seeking what they believed were meaningful academic credentials.
“While my predecessor looked the other way when colleges defrauded students and borrowers, I promised to take this on directly to provide borrowers with the relief they need and deserve,” Mr. Biden said.
The president’s decision to cancel the student debt was another step in his pursuit of student loan forgiveness in the year since the Supreme Court struck down a far more ambitious plan to wipe out more than $400 billion in debt.
Mr. Biden said last month that he would make another attempt at large-scale debt forgiveness for more than 25 million people, despite opposition from Republicans, who say it would be unfair to borrowers who struggled to pay off their student debt without assistance.
In the meantime, the administration has forgiven about $160 billion in debt for 4.6 million borrowers by fixing and streamlining existing programs that have been plagued by bureaucratic and other problems for years.
The action covers students who attended Art Institute schools between Jan. 1, 2004, and Oct. 16, 2017. The department said borrowers would be notified starting on Wednesday that they had been approved and would see their debt canceled automatically.
Forgiving federal student loans for borrowers who the administration has determined were preyed on by their schools has emerged as one part of the administration’s student debt relief strategy, using its authority under an existing program known as borrower defense to repayment. To date, the administration has approved $28.7 billion in debt forgiveness for some 1.6 million borrowers whose institutions engaged in misleading practices or shut down.
“In addition to providing critical relief to students, we need to hold wrongdoers accountable — otherwise, executives will continue to exploit students for their own benefit,” said Aaron Ament, the president of the National Student Legal Defense Network, which has represented former Art Institute students since 2018.
