How to Come Up With a Business Team Name

The name of your business team can be a very important part of your success, but choosing a name can be a daunting task. From simple color choices for your business logo to company names to trademarks, choosing the right team name can help your company stand out from the crowd.

A great way to come up with a business team name is to check-in with your business goals. What does your business want to accomplish? What values does it wish to promote?

What do you want people to associate with your business, or with your team? This will help you come up with a good team name.

Below are a few important steps for choosing a catchy business team name:

Brainstorm a list of business team name ideas with your team

When naming your business team, the first important step is to brainstorm a list of some good business team names with your friends and teammates.

Sit with your teammates and discuss the missions and values of your project or business. And then start thinking of related words and phrases that can be used in your business team name.

You can also use any online business team name generator to come up with some unique business team name ideas.

Don’t choose a name that’s already been used

It’s important to choose your business team name carefully, so that it fits with your business’s culture, values, and stands out. Why?

Because when people visit your business they will first see your name which is always the first impression of any business team. So, you should make sure that your business team name is unique.

Choosing a name that is unique or distinctive is important, but you also need to check the name with a trademark search before you use it to avoid problems down the line.

A simple name is better than a complicated name

A good business name has the ability to establish a sense of style, which is a distinct advantage when it comes to branding and marketing your business in the public eye. Keep it short and simple to make it stick in people’s minds.

Also, if your name will be short and simple, it will be more likely to remember and people will easily find your business team name online on the web.

Don’t use a name that’s too difficult to pronounce

When choosing a business team name, you want to pick something that will help your company achieve its goals but won’t be difficult to say or spell.

Make sure the name is pronounceable. A name that is hard or impossible to pronounce will make it more difficult for customers to remember and communicate without hesitation.

Avoid negative business team names

In the world of businesses, nothing is more important than a name. That’s why it’s so important to choose a name that represents your business in a positive way.

A common mistake startups make is choosing a name that is negative, derogatory, or too similar to a well-known competitor’s name.

Choosing a name that sounds similar to existing businesses may be confusing for potential customers. Negative names can also cause legal issues for your company when it comes to registering your business name.

You must know that a bad name can ruin the business’ reputation. So, how do you avoid a bad name? You can either choose your own name or create a name that does not have a negative connotation.

Shortlist some of your favorite business team names

Once you come up with a list of some good business team names, your next step should be to shortlist some of your favorite names from your list.

When shortlisting your favorite names, keep these important things to keep in mind:

  • Keep it meaningful and clear.
  • Avoid Misspelling.
  • Use related to your business, product, or service.

Get some feedback

In my experience, the easiest way to choose a name for my business is to ask people what they like. There are a few reasons for this.

First, you will know what a handful of people in your network like, so you can eliminate those choices if they are not something you really like.

Second, if the name is something that you really like, it means that it’s something that will be easy to remember and is not too difficult to spell. Either way, you will found that if you ask people what they like, you’ll get a lot of ideas and lots of feedback.

Make sure your selected team name is available as a domain name

Before deciding on a name for your business team the last and the most important thing is to make sure your name is available as a domain name. Check it on Domain.com .

How to Write the Management Team Section of a Business Plan + Examples

Written by Dave Lavinsky

management hierarchy

Over the last 20+ years, we’ve written business plans for over 4,000 companies and hundreds of thousands of others have used the best business plan template and our other business planning materials.

From this vast experience, we’ve gained valuable insights on how to write a business plan effectively , specifically in the management section.

What is a Management Team Business Plan?

A management team business plan is a section in a comprehensive business plan that introduces and highlights the key members of the company’s management team. This part provides essential details about the individuals responsible for leading and running the business, including their backgrounds, skills, and experience.

It’s crucial for potential investors and stakeholders to evaluate the management team’s competence and qualifications, as a strong team can instill confidence in the company’s ability to succeed.

Why is the Management Team Section of a Business Plan Important?

Your management team plan has 3 goals:

  • To prove to you that you have the right team to execute on the opportunity you have defined, and if not, to identify who you must hire to round out your current team
  • To convince lenders and investors (e.g., angel investors, venture capitalists) to fund your company (if needed)
  • To document how your Board (if applicable) can best help your team succeed

What to Include in Your Management Team Section

There are two key elements to include in your management team business plan as follows:

Management Team Members

For each key member of your team, document their name, title, and background.

Their backgrounds are most important in telling you and investors they are qualified to execute. Describe what positions each member has held in the past and what they accomplished in those positions. For example, if your VP of Sales was formerly the VP of Sales for another company in which they grew sales from zero to $10 million, that would be an important and compelling accomplishment to document.

Importantly, try to relate your team members’ past job experience with what you need them to accomplish at your company. For example, if a former high school principal was on your team, you could state that their vast experience working with both teenagers and their parents will help them succeed in their current position (particularly if the current position required them to work with both customer segments).

This is true for a management team for a small business, a medium-sized or large business.

Management Team Gaps

In this section, detail if your management team currently has any gaps or missing individuals. Not having a complete team at the time you develop your business plan. But, you must show your plan to complete your team.

As such, describe what positions are missing and who will fill the positions. For example, if you know you need to hire a VP of Marketing, state this. Further, state the job description of this person. For example, you might say that this hire will have 10 years of experience managing a marketing team, establishing new accounts, working with social media marketing, have startup experience, etc.

To give you a “checklist” of the employees you might want to include in your Management Team Members and/or Gaps sections, below are the most common management titles at a growing startup (note that many are specific to tech startups):

  • Founder, CEO, and/or President
  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • VP of Sales
  • VP of Marketing
  • VP of Web Development and/or Engineering
  • UX Designer/Manager
  • Product Manager
  • Digital Marketing Manager
  • Business Development Manager
  • Account Management/Customer Service Manager
  • Sales Managers/Sales Staff
  • Board Members

If you have a Board of Directors or Board of Advisors, you would include the bios of the members of your board in this section.

A Board of Directors is a paid group of individuals who help guide your company. Typically startups do not have such a board until they raise VC funding.

If your company is not at this stage, consider forming a Board of Advisors. Such a board is ideal particularly if your team is missing expertise and/or experience in certain areas. An advisory board includes 2 to 8 individuals who act as mentors to your business. Usually, you meet with them monthly or quarterly and they help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. You typically do not pay advisory board members with cash, but offering them options in your company is a best practice as it allows you to attract better board members and better motivate them.

Management Team Business Plan Example

Below are examples of how to include your management section in your business plan.

Key Team Members

Jim Smith, Founder & CEO

Jim has 15 years of experience in online software development, having co-founded two previous successful online businesses. His first company specialized in developing workflow automation software for government agencies and was sold to a public company in 2003. Jim’s second company developed a mobile app for parents to manage their children’s activities, which was sold to a large public company in 2014. Jim has a B.S. in computer science from MIT and an M.B.A from the University of Chicago

Bill Jones, COO

Bill has 20 years of sales and business development experience from working with several startups that he helped grow into large businesses. He has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from M.I.T., where he also played Division I lacrosse for four years.

We currently have no gaps in our management team, but we plan to expand our team by hiring a Vice President of Marketing to be responsible for all digital marketing efforts.

Vance Williamson, Founder & CEO

Prior to founding GoDoIt, Vance was the CIO of a major corporation with more than 100 retail locations. He oversaw all IT initiatives including software development, sales technology, mobile apps for customers and employees, security systems, customer databases/CRM platforms, etc. He has a  B.S in computer science and an MBA in operations management from UCLA.

We currently have two gaps in our Management Team:

A VP of Sales with 10 years of experience managing sales teams, overseeing sales processes, working with manufacturers, establishing new accounts, working with digital marketing/advertising agencies to build brand awareness, etc.

In addition, we need to hire a VP of Marketing with experience creating online marketing campaigns that attract new customers to our site.

If the team is small, you might want to go with something more intimate sounding.

If the team is in a creative industry, you might want to brainstorm some names that are outside-the-box.

And finally, don’t forget to have fun! With that said, here are some examples of popular and creative business team names:

How to Avoid Common Pitfalls When Naming Your Business Team

1. Don’t get too caught up in the brainstorming process. It’s important to have a catchy name for your business team, but don’t spend too much time on it.

You can always come up with a new name later if you need to.

2. Avoid using inside jokes or puns that only your team members will get. These can be confusing for customers or clients who are trying to learn about your business.

3. Be careful not to use a name that could be easily misinterpreted. This could lead to problems down the line when people are trying to find your business online or in person.

4. Make sure the name you choose is easy to pronounce and spell. This will make it easier for people to remember and find your business when they need it.

5. Keep it simple! A complicated or difficult-to-understand name can make it hard for potential customers or clients to take you seriously.

Ways to Get Inspiration and Ideas for Your Team Name

1. Talk to your team members and get their input. What are their interests? What makes them laugh? What motivates them?

Use these ideas as a starting point for brainstorming a team name.

2. Do a keyword search on the internet or in a thesaurus. This can help you come up with ideas based on what your team does or what qualities you want to emphasize.

3. Use wordplay to create a memorable team name. Try puns, alliteration, or other linguistic tricks to make your team name stand out.

4. Keep it short and sweet. A long, complicated team name will be hard to remember and may turn people off. Choose something that is easy to say and spell for the best results.

5. Make sure the meaning of your team name is clear. Don’t choose something that could be interpreted in multiple ways or that might have offensive connotations.

Final Steps to Choosing the Right Name

The final step in choosing the right name for your business team is to make sure the name you’ve chosen is available.

You can do this by searching online for the name or hiring a professional naming company to do a thorough search.

Once you’ve confirmed that the name is available, you can file for a trademark and begin using it for your business.

Brainstorming a catchy business team name doesn’t have to be a stressful or difficult process.

With these tips in mind, you can come up with an eye-catching and memorable name that will represent your business well no matter the industry.

Remember to keep it simple, get creative, and most of all – have fun!

With the right thought process and effort put into brainstorming, you can achieve great results for your company’s branding.

How to Name Your Business group team?

The name of your business group team is one of the most important things you can have. It will be a reflection on how well you do in this industry and it’s something that people are going to remember for years after they first meet you or hear about you. So, what should you consider when naming your company?

Consider the following points while naming your next big brand:

Know what makes a good name

Thousands of name suggestions are there on the internet. But the question is if they are worth considering? The answer is yes! You need to know why certain names work better than others before choosing them.

For example, “EvaCool” sounds like an obvious choice but does not tell much about the services offered by the company. On the other hand, “EvaGamer” tells more about her work.

  • Think about the target audience
  • You must think about who would buy from you.

Brainstorm and make a list of company names

You may want to brainstorm with friends and family members. Or you could use online tools such as Google search engine. There are many websites where you can find thousands of ideas. Just type in keywords related to your business group team and see which ones come up.

Once you get some idea, choose the best option among all of them. If you don’t feel confident enough then ask someone else to help you out. They might give you some great advice.

Play with words to get the best name

There are different ways to play around with words to create catchy names. For instance, you can combine two words together to form a new word. This way, you can add meaning to the combination.

Another thing you can try is using acronyms. Acronym means shortening of a long word. Using these abbreviations helps you save space and time.

You can also consider using a dictionary for related adjectives and synonyms.

Keep on narrowing the list of names down

After coming up with several options, narrow down the choices based on the criteria mentioned above. Choose only those names that fit into your niche market. Also keep in mind whether any of the names sound too similar to each other.

If you still cannot decide between two names, go ahead and pick both of them. Then later, you can change the name once you start getting customers.

Naming your next cool company is just half the job done.

Think about the emotion you want to evoke

When thinking about the name of your company, you must take care of emotions involved. A name that evokes positive feelings in the minds of potential clients is always preferable over negative ones.

So, what kind of feeling do you want to invoke in your prospective clients? Do you want to convey professionalism? Ease of doing business group team? Trustworthiness? These are questions you must ask yourself.

In case you are looking for inspiration, above are some examples of successful companies names ideas.

Avoid hard-to-spell and hard to remember names

It is important to avoid naming your company after something difficult to spell or pronounce. It will be very frustrating when people have trouble pronouncing it. So, stick to easy to say and spell-able names.

Also, avoid making your company name so unique that no one has ever heard of it. People should easily recognize your brand.

Your company name needs to stand out amongst competitors. Make sure it conveys the right message to your prospects.

Use a name that conveys some meaning

A good name should not only tell people how they can contact you but also provide an insight into your services. You need to communicate clearly through your name.

For example, if you sell paint products, you can call your company “Paint by ABC” instead of simply calling it ‘ABC Paint’. The former implies more than just selling paints.

Make sure your company name stands out. The first impression matters most.

Consider a name that tells a story

The name of your company should reflect its history as well as future plans. Your company name should be able to describe who you are and what you offer.

This is why many business group teams use their initials as part of their company name. For example, “HGTV” stands for Home & Garden Television. HGTV shows home improvement projects.

However, this approach may not work for all types of business group teams. If you plan to expand beyond DIY projects, then you might choose a longer name like “Stars Improvement Services”.

People often forget the names of things they own. But, they never forget the names of brands they love.

Make it catchy and memorable.

To make your company name catchy, think about using words that represent your core values. This way, even though your company changes directions, your name remains relevant.

You don’t necessarily need to come up with a new name every time you launch a product or service. However, you should consider changing your company’s name whenever there is a significant shift in direction or strategy.

Don’t pick a name that limits your business group team growth

If you decide to start a new venture, you shouldn’t limit yourself from growing bigger. Choose a name that allows you to grow without any restrictions.

This point is for business group team owners who intend to spread their business group team in the future. They know that having a limited scope makes them less competitive.

So, choosing a name with great future growth and expansion potentials would help you achieve success faster.

Consider referencing to a book or movie

Many entrepreneurs find themselves inspired by famous books or movies. In fact, these references can inspire you to create a better company name.

When brainstorming for a name, try thinking outside the box. Instead of coming up with a creative idea on your own, ask others for suggestions.

They could include friends, family members, colleagues, etc. Also, look at other companies’ websites and social media pages. These sites usually list the names of previous clients.

Many small business group teams took advantage of popular characters from stories and movies. It helped their business group teams and they needed relatively less marketing tactics.

Conduct a thorough internet search.

Before naming your company, conduct a comprehensive online research. Look for similar companies and see which ones have been successful.

Also, check whether your proposed name has already been registered. There are several free tools available online that will allow you to do so.

Once you’ve found a suitable name, register it immediately. Don’t wait until after launching your website because doing so will cost you money.

It’s important to note that some countries require additional registration fees if you wish to protect your intellectual property rights. So, before starting an e-commerce store, consult local laws regarding trademarks and copyrights.

The same goes for foreign investors. If you plan to raise capital abroad, then you’ll need to get permission first.

The best thing to do is to hire a lawyer specializing in IP law. He/she will guide you through all legal procedures required to secure your right to use your chosen name.

Get the .com domain name

There are many reasons why getting a.com domain name is essential. First, this type of domain extension is considered as one of the most valuable domains out there. Second, it helps build trust among customers since people associate a .com extensions with quality brands. Third, it gives you more opportunities to earn revenue via advertising. You should always perform a trademark search prior to using a particular term. The results of such searches may vary depending on where you live.

Get feedback on the name

You might think that choosing a good name would be easy but it takes time and effort. Therefore, don’t rush into making decisions. Instead, ask others about what they like or dislike about your potential new name.

Ask them how they’d feel if someone used their favorite phrase or character in his/her own business group team. They might even suggest alternative options.

Some names seem good on just paper and they sound awful. For example, “Bargain” has negative connotations. Avoid such things at the earliest.

Use free resources for brainstorming name ideas

To help come up with great names, try browsing online forums dedicated to naming conventions. There, you can find lists of popular words and expressions which have been associated with certain industries over the years.

There are hundreds of resources out there that could give you suggestions on what kind of name you should choose. However, these sites usually focus only on English language users. That means you won’t see much information related to non-English speaking markets.

Management Section

A business is as efficient as its team and its management. It, therefore, becomes important for business owners to build a structured management team that achieves the objectives and goals set by the organization. Thus, making the management section of a business plan the most essential component.

Andrew Carnegie , an American steel magnate, beautifully summarized it –

Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.

A business management plan helps build an efficient team and formalize business operations . This helps businesses streamline strategies to achieve their goals.

It, therefore, becomes imperative that business owners pay utmost importance while writing the management section of a business plan.

So, if you are a business owner who is looking to formalize their business structure and write the management team section in their business plan , this guide is for you.

Here’s a sneak peek into what you’ll learn:

Table of Contents

  • What Is the Management Section?
  • Importance of the Management Section
  • What to Include in the Management Section?
  • Example of a Management Section Plan
  • Ensure That the Management Section Is Fool-proof?

Sounds good? Let’s dive in.

What Is The Management Section Of A Business Plan?

The management section of a business plan is an in-depth description of a business’s team, its structure, and the ownership of a business.

The section discusses in detail who is on the management team – internal and external- their skill sets, experiences, and how meaningfully they would contribute to an organization’s goals and outcomes.

Now that we have defined what is the management section of a business plan, let’s understand why it is so important.

The Importance Of The Management Section Of A Business Plan

The management section helps you to:

1. Convince your investors (banks and government agencies) to disburse loans and grants for your business idea

2. Prove that your management team can execute your idea and if not, help hire the right fit for a position

3. Share how your advisory board can help your team succeed

What To Include In the Management Section Of A Business Plan?

The management section of a business plan helps in formalizing and structuring the management team plan and is comprised of

  • The Management Team
  • The Management Team Gaps
  • The Management Structure

Let’s understand them in detail.

1. The Management Team

An organization’s entire management team can be divided into parts – the internal team and the external team.

The Internal Management Team

A business team consists of several departments. The most common departments are – Marketing, Sales, IT, Customer Service, Operations, Finance, and HR.

These departments may or may not be required. It purely depends on the nature and functioning of your business. For example, a dental clinic may not require a sales department per se.

The entire management team is compartmentalized according to their responsibility. This helps the business owners and investors be aware of the roles, benefits, ESOPs (if applicable), profit sharing (for sales), work contracts, NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements), and Non-Competition Agreements of the entire team.

It is recommended that business owners collect and document the following information about their team:

  • Educational Background
  • Work Experience
  • Accomplishments

The Internal Management Team

For example, your present VP of Marketing helped their previous company grow its bottom line from $3 million to $10 million over 18 months.

The External Management Team

The external management team is usually composed of – Advisory Board Members and Professional Services.

Advisory board members help by :

  • Establishing trust, showing results, and experiencing the table.
  • Increasing the confidence of investors and consumers.

This helps attract talented employees to the team. Credible advisory board members show great commitment to a company’s growth. Therefore, it becomes important to document their experience and specialization in the business management plan. The advisory board members can help give valuable advice that internal team members need or lack.

If your business has not or will not have VC funding, you may not require board members on your team.

Usually, board members meet quarterly or monthly to provide strategic guidance in place of stock options in your company. This helps attract the best advisors and motivates them to invest in your business.

For example, founders and business owners coming to raise funds in Shark Tank , a business television series, are looking for advisory members who would invest money and provide guidance on necessary steps.

On the other hand, Professional Service helps by

  • Offering highly specialized advice and sharing knowledge.
  • Business owners make key strategic management decisions.

Such services help businesses leverage skills that would be difficult to build and acquire over a short period.

Examples of such professional services are

Examples of such professional services

  • IT Consultants
  • Business coaches and consultants

After a brief overview of the Management Team of an organization, let’s dive into what to include in Management Team Gaps.

2. The Management Team Gaps

The management team gap is an important part of the management section. Primarily because it helps document if your management team currently has gaps or missing skills. Your team may lack a few required skills while starting. The management team gaps help you to be aware and make efforts to close this gap.

As a business owner, you must document what positions are missing and who ought to fill that positions or take responsibility.

For example, if you need a VP of Sales, clearly document this in the section.

Also, write down the job description and key responsibilities to be undertaken,

Example – You might mention that role required 10 years of experience in the sales domain. The applicant must have experience handling a sales team, closing new accounts, working in tandem with the marketing team, and having relevant startup experience.

Be as detailed as possible. This will help you build a checklist while interviewing the right candidate and also win investor confidence in your managerial skills.

Following are a few key positions you would want to include in your management team:

  • Founder and/or, CEO
  • Chief Technical Officer (CTO)
  • Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)
  • Chief Operating Officer (COO)
  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
  • Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO)
  • Head of Product Management (PM)
  • VP of Sales
  • VP of Marketing
  • UX Designer
  • Digital Marketing Manager
  • Business Development Manager
  • Customer Service Manager
  • Customer Success Manager
  • Sales Managers/Sales Staff
  • Advisory Board Members

Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of the management structure.

3. The Management Structure

The management structure defines how a business organizes its management hierarchy. A hierarchy helps determine the roles, positions, power, and responsibilities of all team members.

The management structure also depends upon the type of business ownership. Business ownership can be – a sole proprietorship, partnership, or simply an LLC.

Following is a sample management structure of an organization.

The Management Structure

Now that we understand what details we need to document in the business management plan, let’s look at a few examples of the management plan.

One of the greatest human needs is the need to belong. So, in every organization or business, to avoid making your employees feel lost and disconnected, get them on a team and give it a name. While it may sound hard to believe, a team with a special name can indeed build team spirit and motivate and inspire everyone . Try and see.

In addition, group naming also brings key benefits such as:

Create an identity for your team

Instead of each having their own personality and identity, why not find common ground and incorporate that characteristic into the name of the group? This will make the team have its own identity and personality to stand out and impress not only the business but also other departments.

Make every member responsible

When standing under the same name, team members will understand each job, and each task will affect the reputation of the team. From there, they will carefully, wholeheartedly, and responsibly complete all the assigned tasks.

In particular, the naming of the group will motivate employees to be more committed to the work and business they are doing.

business plan team names

Make the whole team more united

As mentioned above, creating a group name gives employees a sense of belonging. That motivates them to come closer together, unite and make efforts for the collective. The “I” has now been replaced by “we”.

This means that all members will find a way to communicate more effectively, actively sharing their knowledge and the difficulties they are facing so that the whole team can support them and find a solution.

Create a little competition in the business

The competition encourages employees to work harder to achieve their best. Thereby, they reduce the state of laziness, and apathy and work more enthusiastically with a progressive spirit, and a desire to innovate and develop. So some businesses encourage teams with distinct names to create a bit of competition.

Overall, giving your team a name is a great way to build a culture. It not only promotes cohesion and ensures the long-term success of the company’s projects. It also affects employees to practice teamwork and coordinate smoothly and reasonably. Since then, the work performance is of high quality, bringing great revenue to the company.

Tips for Coming Up With Best Team Names For Work

business plan team names

Coming up with a name for your team is a challenge! You should consider the following factors:

Named based on what the members have in common

A memorable and meaningful name will certainly depend on the value people bring to that name, in this case, your team members.

For example, if the team is full of personality and aggressive people, the team name must have strong characteristics or be associated with personality animals such as lions and tigers. On the contrary, if the team is gentle and good at communicating, you should consider bringing tenderness into the name like about a bird, the color is also gentle like pink and blue.

Keep the name short and easy to remember

A name that is short and easy to remember is certainly easier to make an impression on many people. Don’t try to cram more than 4 words into your name because no one will care. In addition, the short naming is easy to display for group chats or name internal files.

Names should have adjectives

Adding an adjective that enhances your team’s identity is one way to set it apart from functional groups. You can look up the dictionary for synonyms of the chosen adjective to expand it to more options and avoid duplication.

Above are 400+ suggestions for your team if you need a name. Naming will bring people closer together, more united, and bring more efficiency at work. In addition, naming will not be too problematic if your team brainstorms together and consults the tips above. Good luck!

What is a business plan?

1. write an executive summary, 2. describe your company, 3. state your business goals, 4. describe your products and services, 5. do your market research, 6. outline your marketing and sales plan, 7. perform a business financial analysis, 8. make financial projections, 9. summarize how your company operates, 10. add any additional information to an appendix, business plan tips and resources.

A business plan outlines your business’s financial goals and explains how you’ll achieve them over the next three to five years. Here’s a step-by-step guide to writing a business plan that will offer a strong, detailed road map for your business.

A business plan is a document that explains what your business does, how it makes money and who its customers are. Internally, writing a business plan should help you clarify your vision and organize your operations. Externally, you can share it with potential lenders and investors to show them you’re on the right track.

Business plans are living documents; it’s OK for them to change over time. Startups may update their business plans often as they figure out who their customers are and what products and services fit them best. Mature companies might only revisit their business plan every few years. Regardless of your business’s age, brush up this document before you apply for a business loan .

This is your elevator pitch. It should include a mission statement, a brief description of the products or services your business offers and a broad summary of your financial growth plans.

Though the executive summary is the first thing your investors will read, it can be easier to write it last. That way, you can highlight information you’ve identified while writing other sections that go into more detail.

Next up is your company description. This should contain basic information like:

Your business’s registered name.

Address of your business location .

Names of key people in the business. Make sure to highlight unique skills or technical expertise among members of your team.

Your company description should also define your business structure — such as a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation — and include the percent ownership that each owner has and the extent of each owner’s involvement in the company.

Lastly, write a little about the history of your company and the nature of your business now. This prepares the reader to learn about your goals in the next section.

The third part of a business plan is an objective statement. This section spells out what you’d like to accomplish, both in the near term and over the coming years.

If you’re looking for a business loan or outside investment, you can use this section to explain how the financing will help your business grow and how you plan to achieve those growth targets. The key is to provide a clear explanation of the opportunity your business presents to the lender.

For example, if your business is launching a second product line, you might explain how the loan will help your company launch that new product and how much you think sales will increase over the next three years as a result.

In this section, go into detail about the products or services you offer or plan to offer.

You should include the following:

An explanation of how your product or service works.

The pricing model for your product or service.

The typical customers you serve.

Your supply chain and order fulfillment strategy.

You can also discuss current or pending trademarks and patents associated with your product or service.

Lenders and investors will want to know what sets your product apart from your competition. In your market analysis section , explain who your competitors are. Discuss what they do well, and point out what you can do better. If you’re serving a different or underserved market, explain that.

Here, you can address how you plan to persuade customers to buy your products or services, or how you will develop customer loyalty that will lead to repeat business.

Include details about your sales and distribution strategies, including the costs involved in selling each product .

If you’re a startup, you may not have much information on your business financials yet. However, if you’re an existing business, you’ll want to include income or profit-and-loss statements, a balance sheet that lists your assets and debts, and a cash flow statement that shows how cash comes into and goes out of the company.

Accounting software may be able to generate these reports for you. It may also help you calculate metrics such as:

Net profit margin: the percentage of revenue you keep as net income.

Current ratio: the measurement of your liquidity and ability to repay debts.

Accounts receivable turnover ratio: a measurement of how frequently you collect on receivables per year.

This is a great place to include charts and graphs that make it easy for those reading your plan to understand the financial health of your business.

This is a critical part of your business plan if you’re seeking financing or investors. It outlines how your business will generate enough profit to repay the loan or how you will earn a decent return for investors.

Here, you’ll provide your business’s monthly or quarterly sales, expenses and profit estimates over at least a three-year period — with the future numbers assuming you’ve obtained a new loan.

Accuracy is key, so carefully analyze your past financial statements before giving projections. Your goals may be aggressive, but they should also be realistic.

Before the end of your business plan, summarize how your business is structured and outline each team’s responsibilities. This will help your readers understand who performs each of the functions you’ve described above — making and selling your products or services — and how much each of those functions cost.

If any of your employees have exceptional skills, you may want to include their resumes to help explain the competitive advantage they give you.

Finally, attach any supporting information or additional materials that you couldn’t fit in elsewhere. That might include:

Licenses and permits.

Equipment leases.

Bank statements.

Details of your personal and business credit history, if you’re seeking financing.

If the appendix is long, you may want to consider adding a table of contents at the beginning of this section.

Here are some tips to write a detailed, convincing business plan:

Avoid over-optimism: If you’re applying for a business bank loan or professional investment, someone will be reading your business plan closely. Providing unreasonable sales estimates can hurt your chances of approval.

Proofread: Spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors can jump off the page and turn off lenders and prospective investors. If writing and editing aren't your strong suit, you may want to hire a professional business plan writer, copy editor or proofreader.

Use free resources: SCORE is a nonprofit association that offers a large network of volunteer business mentors and experts who can help you write or edit your business plan. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Small Business Development Centers , which provide free business consulting and help with business plan development, can also be a resource.

How To Write a Management Team Business Plan (With an Example)

When creating a business plan, the management section outlines your management team, personnel, resources, and the ownership structure of your company. This section should not only list the members of your management team but also how their individual skill sets will affect your financial results. We’ll go into detail about how to put together and highlight your management team in this article. This section can be conveniently organized by dividing it into the following sections:

How to write a management team business plan

Consider using these guidelines to produce a powerful team business plan:

1. Collect resumes from each manager

Typically, resumes outline a professional’s qualifications, including their training, prior employment, and technical and soft skills. You can use the resumes of your management team as a resource when writing content for your business plan. Ask each manager to send a fresh copy of their resume Asking them to modify their resume to reflect their specific position within your company could be useful and make it simpler for you to create their profiles. Include copies of their resumes as annexes to your proposal.

2. Organize your management team into categories

The next step is to depict the chain of command within your company. List the profiles, going from the company’s owners to the departmental supervisors in descending order. Your management team business plan can appear more organized by using categories, and your audience will understand how the teams’ qualifications correspond to their positions. If your company has multiple divisions, categories may also be useful.

3. Write the managers name and job title

Finding the manager on their individual profile is the third step. Include their role title and first and last names in your writing. Consider adding their department to distinguish between them if there are multiple managers with the same title. To be more specific, you could write “Assistant Manager, Marketing Department” for various employees with the title “assistant manager.”

4. Describe their employment history

The employment history details prior positions your managers held in the sector. Listing the candidates’ prior positions can support your decision to appoint them as managers if they have experience as organizational leaders. Summarize their responsibilities and projects theyve coordinated in the past. You can also highlight your managers’ achievements in this section, such as awards they have won or helpful things they have done for previous employers.

5. Explain their educational background

The manager profile’s education section covers the institutions your team attended and the degrees they obtained. It can further highlight the manager’s credentials by demonstrating that they have received the necessary training to oversee other team members in your organization. You can also write professional certifications your managers have. For instance, listing a certification in spreadsheet software may impress potential business partners if you run a technology company.

What is a management team business plan?

A management team business plan describes the qualifications and experience of a group of managers in a company. Its goal is to demonstrate to potential investors that the professionals your business has hired are qualified for leadership roles because they have training and experience. It includes details that distinguish your organization from competitors. A potential investor or business partner may be persuaded to provide funding or work with your company if your management team’s business plan impresses them.

Tips for writing a management team business plan

The following three rules will help you gather data and organize your management team business plan:

Incorporate relevant information

Include information that is relevant to their interests in your management profile as a way to attract potential investors. List the qualifications of your leaders in relation to your company and your sector. By including pertinent information, you can demonstrate to potential customers that your team has the managerial skills they need. Be selective when gathering information about your managers to avoid detracting the audience from your goal.

For instance, if you work for a ride-sharing company, you might be looking for partnerships to expand into major cities. You could note in your management team business plan that your executives have experience in customer service, technology, and transportation, three crucial areas that can help the ride-sharing business succeed. The strategy shows potential partners that your team has the expertise to work in the field, encouraging them to collaborate with your company.

Use straightforward wording

Simple language can keep your management team business plan clear and understandable. It’s crucial that customers can understand your company’s organizational structure and which employees are responsible for what tasks. The size of the business and the number of supervisors there are may have an impact on the length of the proposal. But even if your plan is more detailed, keeping your writing simple can help you keep the interest of potential stakeholders. It might be beneficial to reread your sentences and omit any pointless details so that you can convey the key ideas of your message in fewer words.

Clarify information with your team

It may be difficult to include every qualification of an employee on a resume because they are typically one page long. To learn more about your team members’ professional backgrounds, think about speaking with them directly. Find out if they have any additional pertinent information to include in their profile that will appeal to potential customers. Maybe you should mention a gap in their resume or point out that they have more work achievements you can list in their profile. Clarifying details with managers can help you plan the content more effectively and prevent repeating too many details from their resumes.

Example of a management team business plan

You can write a management team business plan that is successful by using the following example of a team member’s profile as a model:

Management Team Member Profile

Jane Stewart, Director of Marketing

The marketing division is headed by Jane Stewart, who is also the coordinator of marketing, social media manager, and graphic designer. Her duties include keeping an eye on social media engagement analytics and creating creative consumer engagement strategies. Stewart graduated from Pine Ridge University with a bachelor’s in marketing and a master’s in business administration. She is professionally certified in social media management and content marketing. Stewart’s previous position was assistant marketing director at full-service advertising agency Oak Wood, where she saw a 25% increase in email and video subscriber numbers.

Writing the Management Team Section of Your Business Plan

How do you present a management team in a business plan?

An organizational chart of your small business, including departments, department managers, and employees, should be included in the management team section. Biographical information about you, the owner, and any other owners. Clearly state your ownership stake in the company and your day-to-day responsibilities.

How do you write a management plan for a business plan?

  • Indicate the number of employees your business will require at each stage and their associated costs.
  • Describe the specifics of how your company’s human resource needs can be satisfied.
  • Describe your hiring needs, including a list of the particular skills that any employees you hire must possess.

How important is management team in a business plan?

A strong management team is especially important if you want the company to expand and grow as a whole. A management team is crucial for distributing leadership responsibilities as a business expands. If your business operates in multiple locations, it is essential.

A business team name is necessary for this initial stage in building a successful business team.

A business team requires a name that suits the image of the company they are attempting to develop. Think of it like how you wouldn’t start a relationship without getting to know the other person.

Therefore, if you want to give your business team or group a name, think of a name that precisely describes your team or group. Because it represents your team’s identity and initial impressions, your team’s name is crucial.

The exciting and straightforward task of naming your business team is a challenge. All that’s left to do is come up with a few suitable names, make a list of them, shortlist them, and choose one.

Your name should be unique and impressive , as was previously mentioned, to impress others. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind while naming your company’s team.

The first step is to make a list of all the business team names you like from the ideas and suggestions mentioned above. To show that your group is capable of growing a little investment into a larger one, business team names should be formal and distinctive.

Things to Consider for Business Team Names

Most importantly, the name you pick should reflect your team as a whole. While it may be fun to pick cool and funny names like The Eliminators, in a corporate environment, it isn’t right to be informal.

But don’t let this get you down! You can come up with good and creative name ideas without losing formality. You have to straddle the fine line between cool and funny and over the top, which can be a difficult thing to do.

Also, check out other teams in the market. Of course, your business team name should be unique only to your team. However, other teams can give you some ideas. Think of other teams as a jumping-off point to help you choose your own original business team name!

Define Your Brand Identity for a Team Name Business Name

Determine your target audience : To choose a team Name business name idea, start by identifying the people you want to appeal to with your team Name brand. Consider their age, gender, interests, and preferences. This will help you create a name that resonates with your ideal customers and sets the foundation for a successful team Name brand.

Define your team Name brand personality and values : Your brand's personality should be reflected in your team Name business name. Think about the characteristics you want your team Name business to embody, such as playfulness, warmth, or creativity. Make a list of adjectives and values that align with your team Name brand, as these can serve as inspiration for your business name.

Identify your unique selling proposition (USP) for your team Name business : What sets your team Name business apart from the competition? Your USP should be a core element of your team Name business name, helping to convey your business's distinct qualities. It's important to communicate what makes your team Name products or services special in a way that is memorable and appealing to your target audience.

Generate Team Name Business Name Ideas

Combine words and concepts for a team Name name : Brainstorm words and concepts related to your team Name brand and consider combining them in interesting ways. This can help you create a unique and memorable team Name business name that captures the essence of your brand while appealing to your target audience.

Use puns and wordplay in your team Name name : Puns and wordplay can add a fun and whimsical touch to your team Name business name. Think about phrases or idioms that relate to your brand, and see if you can incorporate a playful twist that aligns with your team Name brand personality.

Incorporate a rhyme in your team Name name : rhyming can make your team Name business name more memorable and engaging. Experiment with word combinations that create a pleasing rhythm or sound, making your team Name business name stand out and stick in people's minds.

Take inspiration from literature, mythology, or pop culture for your team Name name : Look into books, myths, or popular culture for team Name names or phrases that could work well for your business. These sources can provide a wealth of creative ideas for a team Name business name that is both meaningful and memorable.

Experiment with foreign words or translations for a team Name name : Explore words in other languages that relate to your team Name brand or have a pleasant sound. This can add an exotic or sophisticated touch to your team Name business name while still communicating your brand's values and personality.

Test Team Name Business Name Options

Create a focus group or survey for your team Name business name : Gather feedback from your target audience by conducting a focus group or survey. This will help you understand which of your team Name business name ideas resonate most with your potential customers, ensuring your final choice will have broad appeal.

Test team Name names for memorability and pronounceability : A good team Name business name should be easy to remember and pronounce. Try saying your team Name name options out loud, and ask others to do the same. Note any challenges or difficulties people experience, and use this information to refine your team Name business name ideas.

Evaluate team Name names for emotional appeal : Your team Name business name should evoke positive emotions and create a strong connection with your target audience. Assess the emotional impact of your team Name name options by considering the feelings and associations they bring out in people. Choose a team Name business name that aligns with your brand's personality and values while generating a positive emotional response.

Legal Considerations for Team Name Business Names

Check for trademark availability of your team Name business name : Before choosing your team Name business name, search trademark databases to ensure that it is not already in use by another company. This will help you avoid potential legal issues and ensure that your team Name business name is truly unique.

Verify domain name availability for your team Name name : Having a website is essential for any modern business, so check if your preferred team Name business name has an available domain. This will make it easier for your customers to find you online and help establish a cohesive brand presence.

Research local business name regulations for your team Name name : Different jurisdictions have various rules and regulations surrounding business names. Before settling on your team Name business name, research your local laws to ensure that your chosen name meets all necessary requirements and does not infringe upon any existing trademarks or business names.

Finalize Your Team Name Business Name

Reflect on feedback and personal preferences for your team Name name : Take into account the feedback you've gathered from your target audience, as well as your own personal preferences. Consider which team Name business name ideas best represent your brand's identity, values, and unique selling proposition, while also appealing to your ideal customers.

Ensure your team Name name aligns with brand identity : Before making a final decision, double-check that your chosen team Name business name aligns with your overall brand strategy. This will help create a cohesive brand image and make it easier for customers to understand and connect with your business.

Announce your new team Name business name and launch your brand : Once you've chosen the perfect team Name business name, it's time to share it with the world. Announce your new name through marketing materials, social media, and your website. Celebrate your team Name business name with your customers, and use it as a foundation for building a successful, memorable brand.

To create and curate the list of business name ideas above, I used the following process, combining research, AI, and a dash of creativity.

First, I wrote out a list of words to describe the emotions that small businesses strive to elicit, like loyalty, productivity, and satisfaction. Then, I added words for business goals for all types of businesses, like quality, cash flow, and awareness. Finally, I added motivational words to the list, like commit, imagine, and uplift. This led to a list of about 200 words.

I used an AI tool to generate some business name ideas. I started with the prompt, “Create 20 original business names inspired by the following ideas.” Then, I edited each prompt with different sections of the list.

The steps above created 816 potential business names. I figured this was a great collection of business names, and it would be easy to pull out 100+ names with potential. But a quick review gave me just 74 business names I liked and most of those needed a lot of editing.

So, I tried again. To develop more useful business names for inspiration, I created a list of popular brand names from different industries. Then, I asked the AI tool to create more business names for each category that aligned with the tone and feel of each industry.

I also edited the prompts and results by asking for business name alternatives with a specific tone or “vibe.” This last step helped to yield business name ideas that matched what I liked best about existing companies’ brand names. I added to these names by grabbing some options from a business name generator.

Once I had a list of about 200 business name ideas, it was time to start editing. Some of the AI business names were great. But others needed more personality, so I sat down with a notebook and my list of names to experiment.

The Make My Persona tool was useful for this process. I used this tool to build an ideal persona for each business type. These personas helped me keep the customer in mind as I edited each business name.

Sometimes, just changing a few letters, capitalization, or spacing was enough. Other times, the act of writing inspired completely new business name ideas. Through this process, I came up with 155 new business names. The list of names felt pretty unique, so I didn’t think that I would find much during a domain check.

But I was wrong: The domain check cleared out 73 of the 155 names I’d come up with. Overall, I lost 47% of my list of business names.

At first, I was frustrated — but this was actually a positive outcome. It meant that the names I’d come up with were workable for a successful business. But it was also a reminder of how important it is to come up with more than a couple of business name ideas when you’re naming your new business.

For business names where the .com domain was unavailable but other domains were open, I did an online search for the business name. This step reminded me that any new business isn’t just competing with other companies in a given industry. It's also competing with bands, Twitch streamers, YouTube influencers, and more.

For example, “Propellant” sounds like an exciting and easy-to-remember business name for a startup. But it’s also a word in the dictionary and a component of rocket fuel. So even if this domain was available, it probably wouldn’t be a great business name, because it would be hard to find online.

Free Business Startup kit

In total, this process took many hours and several rounds of edits to bring you a list of over 160 business names. Your naming process may not take quite as long, but chances are it will feel even more complex and urgent.

I know that the steps above might sound like a lot of work for just a word or two. But your business name is the center of your new brand. Over time, the name will take on more meaning as you grow your business and establish your value proposition.

Brooklyn Tea’s Recipe for a Thriving Workplace: Brewing an Unstoppable Team

By Christine Umayam

business plan team names

In the bustling streets of Brooklyn, New York, there’s a local business in Bedford-Stuyvesant that’s brewing up more than just great tea – they’re crafting a recipe for an exceptional workplace. Brooklyn Tea was founded by Alfonso Ali Wright and Jamila Wright, a husband-and-wife duo passionate about creating a space where both customers and employees feel valued, heard, and part of something special.

From humble beginnings to a thriving community.

The story of Brooklyn Tea begins with the couple’s own journey. Jamila found a kindred spirit in Alfonso who comes from a Jamaican family where tea was a staple morning and night. Throughout their relationship, he helped deepen her appreciation for the beverage. “You make these beautiful pots and cups of tea with cinnamon sticks at the bottom, and it felt so romantic, and it was such an authentic way to get to know each other,” Jamila recalls. “It really was the start of us thinking about how we could replicate this ability to commune and get to know each other over tea in the form of a business.”

In their humble one-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, the couple began brewing up their dream. “We just knew that this is a business that is helpful for the community and is interesting enough that we could do it forever,” says Jamila.

In December 2018, Brooklyn Tea officially opened its doors on Ocean Avenue, inviting customers to explore the vast and fascinating world of tea. But for Jamila and Alfonso, Brooklyn Tea was always about fostering a sense of community, both among their customers and within their team.

Building a workplace rooted in trust and shared responsibility.

Drawing on Jamila’s experience as an educator, the couple set out to build a workplace rooted in trust, bonding, and a shared sense of responsibility. They understood that when you invest in your people and create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard, you lay the foundation for an unstoppable team.

“You may have your mission and your business plan, but what is the plan to really execute that and make it live and breathe truthfully with your staff and your team? And how do you want your staff to feel listened to and taken care of,” Jamila explains.

Streamlining operations with Homebase.

About two years into the business, the couple recognized the need to find a more efficient way to manage their team and operations. Like many small business owners, they found themselves grappling with the challenges of scheduling , payroll, and communication. “

We were writing this weekly schedule on a calendar that was smudged and people’s names would disappear or reappear,” Jamila recalls. “It was really a very pathetic situation.”

Fortunately, one of their team members  introduced Homebase  to them. Since then, Brooklyn Tea has been leveraging the everything app to supercharge  their daily tasks.

Staying connected, promoting autonomy and flexibility.

With locations in New York and Georgia, Homebase helps the couple communicate to keep the team in sync and on track. “Someone in leadership sends the team our priorities for the day, which kind of helps them to understand what they’re getting into today. But also, each team member sends an update after their shift. So we know exactly what was done, what wasn’t done, how the day went if we’re not there,” Jamila explains. “So it just really makes sure that all of us are- cohesive. Cohesive at all points.”

In addition to the communication the team has with each other, the couple are also able to track how much they paid for labor for the day and how much money the store made. This has allowed the owners to step back and let their team take more ownership of their roles.

“Homebase has been a huge support for our team to allow for more work-life balance and flexibility,” shares Jamila. By using Homebase’s scheduling and time-off request features, Brooklyn Tea has given their team the tools to manage their own availability. Their team can swap shifts in the app and solve scheduling issues without having to go to a manager for help.”When you’re not stuck to that very analog calendar, they have more agency and they have more empowerment to problem solve on their own,” Jamila notes.

But it’s not just about the practical benefits – it’s about fostering a sense of trust and togetherness. “It helps us connect. I send messages through it a lot,” Jamila explains. Whether it’s a staff meeting reminder or a shout-out for a job well done, Homebase’s built-in messaging keeps everyone in the loop and feeling valued.

Making data-driven decisions.

The Homebase reporting features have also been invaluable. Alfonso particularly appreciates the on-time arrival report, which has helped them address attendance issues in a more objective, data-driven way. “When you are in a business, doing a million things, you kinda notice things, but you don’t have it written down,” he says. “But then we’re doing a check-in and showing your employee, ‘hey, you’re on time 37% of the time, we need to fix this, right?’ It’s way better than ‘you’re always late.'”

The platform has also helped Brooklyn Tea keep a closer eye on their labor costs . “Industry standards for the most part is to keep your labor at about 30% of sales. And before Homebase, we were not keeping track of that whatsoever,” Jamila admits. Now the couple have a keener eye on how much labor is used for different days and what it costs them.  “That has really helped us to make better decisions moving forward,” she adds.

Supporting the whole person.

The couple’s support for their team goes beyond supporting their workers’ well-being in the store. Jamila and Alfonso make a point of attending their workers’ plays, art shows, concerts, and open mics, and even showcasing their team’s art in the store.

“What you’ll see at Brooklyn Tea is that people are more goal-oriented versus task-oriented. It’s not just about punching in and out the clock, it’s about how we can really make our community feel seen, feel dignified. They’re really bought into what we’re trying to accomplish because they know the care is not only on the receiving side for the customer, but it’s also behind the bar.”

Jamila and Alfonso beam with pride when they hear from their customers who rave about their team.

“We get emails, texts, reviews all the time of people who are just enamored with our team, who just love them to death, and who ask about them,” Alfonso explains.

“It makes me really happy that we, well Jamila, chose the right people and that our community loves the people that we’ve chosen to serve them.”

“We love when our team feels motivated and empowered to make those shifts, without the note, pun intended. And I think that’s what we’re really proud of is what they do when no one’s watching,” Jamila adds.

Brewing up success, one cup at a time.

Today, Brooklyn Tea has expanded to include a second location in Atlanta, a thriving online retail presence, and a growing wholesale business. Despite this growth, Jamila and Alfonso remain committed to the values that have guided them from the start – a passion for community, a curiosity for the vast world of tea, and a deep appreciation for the power of human connection.

With Homebase , they’ve been able to streamline their operations, make data-driven decisions, and foster a culture of trust, flexibility, and ownership. “Homebase allows you to quickly do a thing that you’re probably not great at. Scheduling and communication as a leader is always one of the hardest parts and this makes it a little easier,” Jamila shares. “So you can get back to blending your tea or making your muffins or whatever it is you do in business.”

As they continue to brew up success, one cup at a time, Brooklyn Tea is proof that with a shared vision, diverse experiences, and a commitment to putting people first, even the most humble beginnings can lead to an extraordinary workplace.

Politics latest: Scottish first minister Yousaf resigns after 'biggest political miscalculation of his career'

Humza Yousaf has announced his resignation as SNP leader and Scotland's first minister following the fallout from his decision to end the SNP's powersharing agreement with the Scottish Greens.

  • Live reporting by Faith Ridler and (earlier)  Samuel Osborne

Humza Yousaf's decision to sack the Green Party from his coalition ultimately triggered a series of events that sealed his political fate, our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies reports.

"It was the biggest political miscalculation of his career that sealed the fate of the first minister," he said, speaking after Mr Yousaf announced he will step down ( see 12.04 post ).

Ending the three-year powersharing deal at Holyrood was a "fatal mistake" which saw the "walls come closing in".

Those close to Mr Yousaf had suggested that agreement "had become a liability within government and many in the SNP were uneasy about how many strings they were pulling".

"So he got rid of them and that triggered a set of events in motion that ultimately led to this moment and ultimately led to his demise."

No confidence votes

No confidence motions were looming at the Scottish parliament later this week, and he was facing wipeout and a backlash of "no" votes from the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party, who were furious.

"And then at that stage there was a suggestion that the ALBA party, Alex Salmond's party, would prop up the SNP government with their one MSP, Ash Regan," Gillies added.

"That was just a step too far. Allies and sources close to Scotland's first minister said, 'look, that would be like doing a deal with the devil'.

"So, there was only one other option and that was to resign."

Stepping in for Sturgeon

Gillies added an "interesting" element to this is how Mr Yousaf said to Sky News just 48 hours ago he would defy that vote of no confidence.

"On a human level, this is a man who is well-liked within the SNP," Gillies said.

"He is a man who stepped up to the plate when Nicola Sturgeon stepped down last year, and he was always going to have a battle ahead."

But even his closest of allies, Gillies said, would realise "he was not Nicola Sturgeon, and he did not command her authority".

By Adam Boulton , Sky News commentator

We have been warned. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's pre-election pitch to voters this week was to place the nation on "war footing".

On a lightning visit to Poland and Germany, countries redolent of bloody war in Europe, he announced "a completely funded plan" to raise annual UK defence spending to 2.5% of national income over the next five to six years.

Tony Blair flew to the US to deliver one of the defining speeches of his 10 years in power. His immediate task was to persuade a reluctant President Bill Clinton to commit to NATO's defence of Kosovo against Serbian aggression.

He set it in the context of a broader ideology which became known as "humanitarian" or "liberal interventionism".

The contrast in tone is stark between Mr Blair's positive argument for the use of force in some circumstances and Mr Sunak's urgent plea that "we must do more to defend our country, our interests and our values".

Read the full analysis here:

More than 7,000 migrants have arrived in the UK so far this year after crossing the Channel - a new record for the first four months of the year.

Home Office figures show some 500 migrants crossed the Channel to the UK on Friday and Saturday alone, taking the provisional total for the year to date to 7,167.

It exceeds the previous record high of 6,691 for January to April 2022 and has already surpassed the 5,946 arrivals in the first four months of last year.

The figures mean arrivals are 24% higher than this time last year and 7% higher than at this point in 2022.

No crossings were recorded on Sunday.

Jenny Gilruth, the Scottish education secretary, has ruled out running to be the next leader of the Scottish National Party after the resignation of Humza Yousaf.

Taking to social media, she backed former deputy John Swinney.

He is the "best choice" and she "will be strongly supporting him" if he runs, she said on X.

Meanwhile, our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies has been told by a source close to former finance secretary Kate Forbes that she is "actively considering" entering the leadership race again.

Ms Forbes lost to Mr Yousaf in the last SNP leadership contest.

You can read more about the runners and riders below:

Back to news that Humza Yousaf has quit as Scotland's first minister, and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar is appearing on Sky News.

He is asked whether he is going to withdraw a motion of no confidence now that Mr Yousaf has resigned, and says: "I think we need to see how the rest of the week plays out, because there are still quite a lot of unknowns."

Mr Sarwar says "the principles of our motion still stand", including Labour's lack of confidence "that the SNP can provide the stable, competent leadership our country needs right now".

He adds: "We are now in the process of electing a third SNP leader in just over a year, possibly a fourth if they go with some kind of interim arrangement.

"Nicola Sturgeon herself said that we shouldn't have a revolving door in Downing Street when Rishi Sunak was elected as the Conservative Party leader and that they should go back to the country to elect the leader of the UK government.

"I think this exact same principle applies here in Scotland. It should be for the people of Scotland to decide who leads our country."

Hamas should accept the "generous" ceasefire package which has been put on the table, Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has said.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum, being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the first time, he said Hamas must leave Gaza in order for a two-state solution to become a reality.

"Hamas are not currently in favour of a two-state solution," he said.

"They are in favour of a no Israel solution."

He added the conflict in Gaza will not end until all hostages taken by Hamas are freed and claimed a proposed truce deal presented by Israel includes the release of potentially thousands of Palestinian prisoners.

"I hope Hamas do take this deal and frankly all the pressure in the world and all the eyes of the world should be on them today, saying 'take that deal'. It will bring about this stop in the fighting that we all want to see so badly," he said.

Continuing his news conference, Chris Heaton-Harris said the relationship between the UK and Ireland is "strong enough to deal with" a dispute over new legacy laws.

The Northern Ireland secretary defended the establishment of the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery as a move in "an important direction".

"This new body starts work on the first of May - on Wednesday - and is completely independent, has a huge budget and has unprecedented disclosure by the UK state about what went on during the times of the Troubles to try and get some information to those families that wish to have it.

"We're bound to have politics and various political debates between us, but I'd like to think our relationship is strong enough to deal with all of those issues."

The issue of asylum seekers crossing from the UK into the Republic of Ireland is an indication Rishi Sunak's Rwanda scheme is already working as a deterrent, the Northern Ireland secretary has said.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Irish deputy prime minister Michael Martin in Westminster, Chris Heaton-Harris said: "The UK's new deterrent is clearly working and having some impact already.

"An impact that will obviously increase as the first flights take off for Rwanda."

He added: "We will obviously monitor all this very closely and continue to work with the Irish government on these matters."

The cabinet minister said while the deterrent effect of the Rwanda scheme was anticipated, "we are slightly surprised that it manifested itself so quickly after the act became law".

The SNP's Westminster leader has praised Humza Yousaf's "integrity, compassion and commitment" during his time as Scotland's first minister.

Posting on X Stephen Flynn, the MP for Aberdeen South, said: "Humza Yousaf has served Scotland with integrity, compassion and commitment.

"The challenges he has faced have been huge, yet at every turn he has led from the front.

"There can be no doubt that he has now laid the groundwork required to take our country forward. I wish him well."

Nicola Sturgeon has praised Humza Yousaf's "grace, dignity and integrity" after he announced he is stepping down as Scotland's first minister.

In a post on X, Mr Yousaf's predecessor said: "I know how big a privilege being first minister is, but also the toll it can take.

"I also know what a wrench it is to step aside, even when sure it is the right thing to do.

"Humza has conducted himself with grace, dignity, and integrity - both as FM and in the manner of his leaving.

"I am and always will be proud to call him a friend."

Humza Yousaf has quit as Scotland's first minister and leader of the SNP.

We take a look back at how the 39-year-old rose through the ranks to become Scotland's top politician.

Mr Yousaf - the MSP for Glasgow Pollok - was born in the city on 7 April 1985 to a Pakistani father and Kenyan mother.

He was privately educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School in Glasgow and became interested in politics during his youth.

He went on to study the topic at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 2007 with an MA.

During his time at university, he joined the SNP. He was also president of the Muslim Students Association and was involved in the Students' Representative Council.

It was straight to Holyrood for Mr Yousaf, taking a job as a parliamentary assistant to the SNP's Bashir Ahmad - Scotland's first Muslim MSP.

After Mr Ahmad's death two years later, he carried on the role and worked as an assistant for a number of MSPs, including Nicola Sturgeon and the then-first minister Alex Salmond, solidifying his place in the party.

These 112 House Republicans voted against Ukraine aid

  • The House passed a more than $60 billion bill that provides more military aid to Ukraine.
  • It's part of a larger foreign aid package that's likely to pass the Senate and be signed into law.
  • 112 Republicans voted it against — the most ever, and a majority of the GOP conference.

Insider Today

The House of Representatives on Saturday passed a more than $60 billion bill to provide military and economic aid to Ukraine.

A solid majority of Republicans voted against the bill, which passed by a 311-112 margin. 101 Republicans voted for it, and one Republican, Rep. Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania, voted "present."

The Ukraine aid bill came to the floor after months of delay and despite staunch opposition from the hard right, including a threat from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to call a vote to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson if he allowed such a vote.

Related stories

Under Johnson's unconventional plan , the Ukraine bill will be sent to the Senate as part of a package that includes aid for Israel and Taiwan and a third bill that forces a sale of TikTok and allows the United States to confiscate Russian assets . Each component received its own vote in the House on Saturday.

The bill is widely expected to pass the Senate in the coming days, as it generally mirrors a $95.3 billion national security bill passed by the upper chamber in February. President Joe Biden has pledged to sign it into law.

Saturday's vote marked the first time the House had approved billions of dollars in Ukraine aid since December 2022, when Democrats still controlled the chamber.

In the two years since Russia's invasion, opposition to aiding Ukraine has grown from a fringe position to a majority view among House GOP lawmakers. Many argue the money should be spent domestically or that policy changes at the US-Mexico border should take precedence.

The new infusion of aid comes at a make-or-break moment for Ukraine , which has faced ammo shortages and insufficient air defenses.

As a result of his move, Johnson could face a vote on his ouster in the coming weeks. The GOP speaker, however, has grown more willing to confront the threat from the right, and Democrats have suggested that they're willing to protect him from an ouster effort if he allowed a vote on Ukraine aid.

"If I operated out of fear of a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job," Johnson told reporters this week. "History judges us for what we do. This is a critical time right now."

Why Disney is doubling down on theme parks with a $60-billion plan

Over the decades since Walt Disney opened his first theme park in 1955, the company’s tourism business has ballooned to an enterprise worth tens of billions in yearly sales, with sprawling locations in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Today, the Burbank entertainment giant is doubling down once again. Disney plans to invest $60 billion over 10 years into its so-called experiences division, which includes the theme parks, resorts and cruise line, as well as merchandise.

In Anaheim, the city council recently approved an expansion plan at Disneyland Resort, which could lead to at least $1.9 billion of development and involve new attractions alongside hotel, retail and restaurant space.

Why the massive investment? At a time when Disney faces revenue challenges due to cord cutting, streaming wars and a slower film box office, its theme parks are a bright — and reliable — spot for its business. Moreover, they play a major part in the company’s strategy — using well-loved movies to inspire rides and vice versa (think “Pirates of the Caribbean”), feeding an ongoing virtuous cycle.

“When you consider other elements of Disney’s business, those theme parks, they’ve shown themselves to be proven winners,” said Carissa Baker, assistant professor of theme park and attraction management at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. “There’s no doubt that they have stayed very competitive in the film space and the TV space, but they’ve always led the theme park sector.”

Will Disneyland get an Avatar land? It’s likely. Here’s what else may be in store

With the approval of DisneylandForward, new attractions and adventures will be coming to Disneyland. Here’s what’s been teased by Disney officials so far.

April 17, 2024

During the most recent fiscal year, the company’s experiences division — which is heavily anchored by the parks — brought in about 70% of Disney’s operating income, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. By contrast, Disney’s sports sector, including ESPN, contributed 19% of operating income. The entertainment division, consisting of the company’s TV channels, streaming services and movie studios, brought up the rear at 11%.

Those numbers represent a stark contrast from even 10 years ago, when the company was heavily reliant on its TV networks, which brought in 56% of Disney’s operating income (that segment included ESPN at the time). The parks and resorts division drew just 20%.

The tide began to turn in 2019, as the global theme park industry saw record-breaking attendance, just in time for the pandemic to hit the next year.

With the parks closed, Disney reported an operating loss of $81 million in 2020 . Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, in particular, were shut for 15 months, due to tight restrictions in the Golden State. Since then, pent-up demand from visitors has propelled theme park revenue in a way that hasn’t been replicated in movie theaters.

“The industry was really growing quickly before COVID-19, and that obviously put a crimp on everything,” said Martin Lewison, associate professor of business management at Farmingdale State College in New York. “But it appears as long as the economy remains healthy, the industry is back on track for that growth.”

Disney’s Bob Iger triumphs over Nelson Peltz in bitter shareholder vote. But big challenges remain

Disney shareholders reject billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, who wanted changes, for a board seat. The hard-fought battle exposed Disney’s challenges.

April 3, 2024

Theme parks are typically one of the fastest parts of the travel and hospitality industry to recover after economic downturns, said Dennis Speigel, founder and chief executive of consulting firm International Theme Park Services. Part of that is because it’s hard to duplicate the theme park experience at home.

“Disney sets the bar for our entire global theme park industry,” Speigel said. “The guests, the visitors, they love the way Disney immerses you in their storytelling.”

The Disneyland Resort expansion plan, known as DisneylandForward, will help the 490-acre park stay fresh for visitors. The plan calls for changes to the park’s zoning, allowing the company more freedom to mix attractions, theme parks, shopping, dining and parking. While the plan doesn’t specify exactly which attractions will be added to the resort, company officials have floated ideas including immersive Frozen, Tron and Avatar experiences.

Over the years, Disneyland has cycled out many rides and exhibits to make way for new ones — for example, of the original 33 attractions that debuted with the park , only about a dozen still exist. (One that didn’t make it? The Monsanto Hall of Chemistry).

Though Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure have recently seen additions such as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge , Avengers Campus and the renovated Pixar Place Hotel , giving guests new reasons to come back again and again are the key to increased growth. This summer, the Magic Kingdom will open Tiana’s Bayou Adventure , replacing the controversial “Song of the South”-inspired Splash Mountain attraction.

“In the theme parks business, you tend to make more money the more you invest,” said Lewison of Farmingdale State College. “People love riding Haunted Mansion 50 times, but the truth is that even that gets old. So new rides, new lands, new parks — these things draw in attendance, they create pricing power and they add capacity.”

And Disney’s rivals in the theme parks business show no signs of slowing down, meaning Disney can’t just rely on its existing hits. Universal Studios Hollywood recently added Super Nintendo World to its park, SeaWorld is touting new attractions and shows for its 60th anniversary this year, and even immersive art installation company Meow Wolf is expanding throughout the U.S.

The competition is becoming so fierce that Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger faced a pointed question during last month’s shareholder meeting about Walt Disney World’s readiness to vie with a new Universal park set to open in Orlando in 2025. He pushed back on the query, saying the idea that Disney World didn’t prepare enough attractions to compete for guests that year “just couldn’t be further from the truth.”

“We’ve been aware of Universal’s plans for a new park for more than a decade,” he said. “We have a sophisticated approach to analyzing the needs of all of our businesses and strategically deploying capital.”

The importance of the parks to Disney’s bottom line is also showing up in the entertainment giant’s search for Iger’s successor . (Iger is expected to retire in 2026.) Josh D’Amaro, the chair of Disney Experiences, which includes the parks, is considered one of four front-runners for the job. Notably, it was Bob Chapek, formerly of the parks division, who initially succeeded Iger, though he was later ousted from the role.
