H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package. It enables educators to create content such as interactive videos, quizzes and presentations. H5P content can be created in the Content bank or on the h5p.com site , or with the LUMI app for desktop, and added to your course as an H5P activity or embedded into any other activity or resource.

For summative assessment, such as exams, it is recommended for security reasons to use the Quiz activity rather than H5P.

Creating and editing H5P content in the Content bank

To create and edit H5P content,

  • Go to the Content bank , accessible when in a course from the Navigation drawer (Boost theme) or from Site pages in the Navigation block (Classic theme).
  • Click the Add button and select a content type.

For more information, see Content bank .

Creating and editing H5P content elsewhere

You can go to the h5p.com site , or you can install the LUMI app for desktop (Windows, Mac and Linux versions available),

Some organisations build their content in LUMI to avoid unnecessary access to Moodle; they send the file to the organization, so they can upload it either in the conten bank/H5P activity and have full control of maintaining the content themselves.

Please note that when you use the LUMI app you will have the option to try some H5P modules that have not yet been officially released in h5p.org, and they may not work well.

The CurrikiStudio server is an open source project to build a server where the teachers can create their H5P content.

Make sure you download the newly created H5P file that you will later upload to your Moodle course.

You must be aware that some parameters limit the file upload size for H5P objects in your server. Course file size limit is one of them.

Remember that if you upload some *.h5p files to your Moodle server, the server MUST have the H5P libraries installed in order for those H5P activities to work. See Manage content types (below) .

If you use the LUMI desktop tool to create a H5P content from a file on the desktop, and then upload the H5P files via ftp to server file system, you would then be able to use the File system repository to add them to the Content bank . From the Content bank select 'Upload content' and the File system repository will appear as an option in the file manager.

Creating H5P resources from Moodle standard questions

See Repurpose resources content type plugin and this post about a new plugin for making H5P resources from some Moodle standard questions. Currently supported resources are:

  • Moodle's Essay question type -> H5P Essay resource
  • Moodle's Multiple Choice question type -> H5P Multiple Choice resource
  • Moodle's Short answer question type -> H5P Guess the Answer resource
  • Moodle's True/False question type -> H5P True False question resource

Questions in a directory can be imported collectively to create a Column , Single Choice Set , Dialog Cards or Flash Cards content types. After creation, the content types can be edited in the Content bank as normal H5P content and combined with other content through copy and paste.

After installation, teachers may create interactive content in the Content bank by clicking the Add button, and then choosing one of the Repurpose resources content types from the drop down menu to open the editor, and selecting questions and other options in the editor and saving. The new content created from the question will now appear in the Content bank .

Adding an H5P activity to a course

See H5P activity for how to create an H5P activity in a course.

Embedding H5P into other activities

moodle h5p course presentation

You can embed H5P content into other activities and resources such as a Lesson or a Book , by clicking the H5P button in the Text editor .

To embed H5P from the Content bank:

  • Click the H5P button in Atto then click 'Browse repositories'.
  • Browse the Content bank repository and select an H5P file.
  • Choose to either make a copy of the file or create a shortcut.
  • Click the button 'Select this file'.
  • Click 'Insert H5P'.

moodle h5p course presentation

Note: If you create a shortcut to the file, you can edit it in the Content bank and any activities with a link to the file will be updated.

Using H5P content in languages other than English

Currently (April 2021) the names and descriptions of the H5P modules when using the Content bank are in English language only, but when using LUMI , these names and descriptions may be translated to other languages. See Translating plugins and the Spanish example below:

Admin settings

For H5P content to display in other activities, the Display H5P filter must be enabled and the URL e.g. h5p.com should be listed as an allowed source in Site admin / Plugins / Filters / Display H5P .

Manage H5P content types

Site administration > H5P > Manage H5P content types

For teachers to upload and display H5P files in their courses, H5P content types and libraries must be available on the site. A scheduled task Download available H5P content types from h5p.org does this automatically (but check if it is enabled and has already run after first upgrading your site).

If it is not possible to use this scheduled task, then the Site administration page 'Manage H5P content types' allows you to upload necessary files.

moodle h5p course presentation

If the scheduled task is not run and files are not uploaded, teachers will receive an error message when attempting to upload H5P content.

An admin can choose to disable selected H5P content types, for example ones duplicating quiz functionality.

H5P settings

Site administration > H5P > H5P settings

H5P framework handler

Select the version of the H5P framework to use.

H5P Settings page showing the 'h5pcustomcss' setting populated with example CSS.

Enter the CSS that you wish to apply to your H5P content. For example, entering:

Application of the 'h5pcustomcss' setting on example H5P presentation content whereby the titles have been changed to the colour pink.

Which will then apply to the H5P content, here being the example presentation ( h5p.org/presentation - CC BY-SA 4.0 Deed Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ ) where both instances of the slide title text have been changed to pink.

Note: This setting is available in Moodle 4.3.3+ (Build: 20240223), version 2023100903.02 and above.

Course Presentations consist of slides with multimedia, text, and many different types of interactions like interactive summaries, multiple choice questions and interactive videos. Students can experience interactive learning material and test their knowledge and memory in Course Presentations.

A typical use of the Course Presentation activity is to use a few slides to introduce a subject and follow these with a few more slides in which the student’s knowledge is tested. Course Presentations may however be used in many different ways, including as a presentation tool for use in the classroom, or as a game where the usual navigation is replaced with navigation buttons on top of the slides to let the student make choices and see the consequences of their choices.

Creating an H5P Course Presentation

The H5P Course Presentation content type enables you to create and deliver your subject content directly in the browser. Course Presentation slides contain various multimedia and interactive elements to engage students in active learning.

Course presentations are used when you want to package content in a structured and interactive format. Students swipe through the slides to view the content while completing quizzes or watching videos. Use the course presentation as an alternative to presenting your subject's content in PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, or text-based web pages.

The H5P Course Presentation allows instructors to create and present content in an engaging way, consistent with Active Learning principles. The Course Presentation can also be used for formative assessment tasks and can provide students with opportunities for self-assessment within the context of the content being presented. This helps students check their understanding and consolidate knowledge.

Example H5P Course Presentation (opens in new tab)

This section will focus on the available options in the Course Presentation editor for navigation of the slides as well as adding content and interactivity.

The Exportable Text activity allows students to write into text fields within an H5P Course Presentation and export the collated text to a Word document.

You can include prompts for the students in the text boxes as well as generic automated feedback in the exported document.

Some potential use cases include:

  • Summarising the subject material in the student's own words for note taking
  • Reflecting on stimulus
  • Writing pre and post-evaluations on perspectives prior to engaging in another activity, e.g. prior to and after completing a module.
  • Drafting components of essays with integrated feedback

With the ability to export the file as a Word document, students can easily upload the document to a Moodle Assignment for marking. Students can edit the Word document, once downloaded, as with any other Word document.

Steps for Creating an Exportable Text Activity

To create an Exportable Text activity in the H5P Course Presentation:

  • From the H5P Course Presentation, click More elements (three vertical dots) to show more options

Moodle: Activities & Resources: H5P Interactive Content

H5P icon

H5P makes it easy to create, share, and reuse HTML5 content and applications. Content is responsive and mobile friendly, which means that users will experience the same rich, interactive content on computers, smartphones and tablets alike. With H5P, instructors can create and edit interactive videos, presentations, games, and more.

Considerations:

As you begin thinking about using these interactive activities, keep the following in mind:

  • While the application and activity is accessible, make sure that the  content  you add is also accessible.
  • Some activities allow for points (grades) and are added to the grade book. If you do  not  want the activity to be graded, you can set the maximum points or weight to zero, and then hide it in the grade book.

Add an H5P Activity to a Course

  • Log into  Moodle  and open your course.
  • Give your activity a name, and use the description area to post instructions for students.
  • In the H5P editor, you can choose from a list of activities.

H5P menu of activities

  • Follow the instructions and prompts to add content and create the activity. The steps and prompts will be different for each type.
  • Save your changes.

Embed h5p content in moodle.

The video below shows how H5P content created on H5P.org may be embedded in Moodle:

H5P now has a plugin for Moodle . It is our recommended way of using H5P in Moodle. Also note that H5P.com may be used for Moodle if you prefer to have your H5P content hosted by the H5P Core Team. H5P.com also provides better reporting, an H5P content repository with collaboration features, video transcoding and more.

Problems with embed coding in Moodle

We are trying to find out how we can get the "embed function" available in our H5P plugIn in Moodle. Anyone who has a clue?

The embed functionality is not yet implementedin Moodle as far as I know. You would have to embed from a Wordpress or Drupal site.

Thanks for clearing out this matter,Thomas!

I certainly hope it will be available in Moodle one way or the other - soon. That would have been fantastic!

h5p import in Moodle

this questions relates to the one above. We're trying to import a h5p interactive video from one course into another, but h5p content doesn't show up in the schema settings (under include one can check activities/ resources, but h5p doesn't show up).

Our current workaround is to activate the download feature for the h5p activity we want to import somewhere else, then download the h5p file that now shows up on the left bottom of the interactive video, to then add a new h5p activity and upload the h5p file we downloaded previously under action. This is very time consuming and complicated if there are many h5p activities in one course.

Would be great if you could update the plugin to support the import feature! The professors at our university really like h5p, but when the new semester starts I see a lot of emails coming in asking about this...

Apart from that please keep up the great work! :-)

h5p backup/import

The backup and import functionality of the h5p plugin for Moodle is in progress.  A lot of people from the Moodle community are wanting these features, so they are indeed a prioritized matter.  You can follow the issues in the Moodle repository on github, issue #27 and #107 . If you have any developer resources it is also possible to add to the issues with some collaboration.

Best, Thomas

inserting h5p content in a moodle page

Hello. I'd like to insert a h5p content in a static moodle page. So, the idea is to have some introductionary text written in moodle, and after that some of the h5p activitiy. I created some of the content in h5p site and pasted embed code in moodle static page. But, in that case h5p activity cannot be graded by moodle grading system.

Is there any idea or solution for this?

Embedding of Moodle-H5P-content

You write in august 2016: "The embed functionality is not yet implemented in Moodle as far as I know."

As far as I know is isn't yet implemented. Do you have any idea?

Sincerely, Kees

Fri, 04/07/2017 - 09:29

It is still not implemented,

It is still not implemented, but many people have requested this feature, so it is definitely still on the roadmap of H5P. Hopefully it will be prioritized soon, or someone will create a pull request for it.

The best way to make sure that this feature gets implemented as fast as possible is to check if it is in the feature request list in the forum and show your support there or create a new feature request post for it.

Hi - should Moodle's glossary feature work with content created using the H5P resource ... eg. on a H5P presentation slide?   It's working OK on natively authored Moodle content, but doesn't appear to work for content created with the H5P plugin. Anything I can do to get it working? Thanks

Embedding H5P Moodle Plugin

Hi just wondering if there have been any advances re enabling the moodle h5p plugin to be embedded in Moodle.

Kind regards Aileen

I'm not completly sure what you mean by "re enabling".

If you are asking if work has been done to embed H5P content in different places in Moodle, that work is unfortionatly not started.

Hi,You can see the H5P plugin

You can see the H5P plugin version by going to "site administration" -> "plugins" -> "plugin overview".

Do you have access to the server logs? There is likely to be important information in your php error log if you can get hold of that.

My goel is to place a H5p content directly in a course section, without needing to click on the link and navigate to different page, showing there the task and make allow to solve it immediatly.I am looking for solution for this but different way than using iframe. How would be this possible?Thank you for your help

Hi,You should be able to

Hi, You should be able to embed H5P content directly within the course section by using a Moodle "label" . If you have the latest H5P plugin installed on your site, you can get the embed code from the view of the H5P content you want to embed from the "embed" button in the H5P frame. You would then copy this link and then paste it within the "HTML" mode of the label on your course page.

Good luck, Thomas

Hello thomasmars,

thank you for your help.Yes i do the same as you describe.Make a h5p content and than click on embed link button copy the content. But thats a code for iframe placement. But as i wrote before i would like to place only the real content without any additional datas(full screen property helps a lot) but in my case in every case when i  use iframed h5p content the background image is downloaded many times for example.

I dont know what would be the best show only the H5p content

I'm not sure what you mean,

I'm not sure what you mean, the real content is placed within the embed, without additional datas. Not sure why your background images is downloaded multiple times, there shouldn't be a problem caching them. Perhaps this is a header issue for the requests instead ? Are the images cached when viewing the content normally ? This only happens when the content is embedded ?

H5P via moodle plugin

Hi all,

Back in April last year, Tim remarked that the user's overall score is stored in the gradebook, however I've been unable to get this to work. I have a series of interactive videos as part of a cours presentation, however in spite of submitting the answers to the questions at each submission screen, nothing appears in the gradebook. A standalone quiz, however, will accomplish this, however this is not suitable if I'm trying to create a seamless course presentation with embedded interactive videos.

Also the embed document on this page mentions embedding the content from the h5p.org website, however when you add content to the h5p website, you immediately get a notification telling you that everything you put up there is publicly viewable. Can I host it on H5p.com instead then embed each section into a content page on a moodle lesson and if I do, will it successfully pass the marks into the gradebook?

Thanks,

Looking to capture Data within Moodle

Hi, I'm looking to gather responses to an H5P Quiz (Question set), in addition to collecting correct responses, we're also interested in seeing which incorrect responses were selected from participants. Is it possible to see this in the Moodle gradebook? If not, how would i go about accessing this data?

Thanks so much!

Hello,

I'm currently using an H5P Quiz (Question set) in our moodle environment, and hoping to capture responses to questions; both which answer was selected, and if that answer was correct. Is there a way to display this information within the moodle gradebook, and if not, how would i go about accessing this information?

Thanks so much,

Moodle Reporting

Hi, we have this plug-in installed on our moodle site, we can only seem to find a score in the grade book for each student, is there any sort of report that's built in, or any that can be ran or any SQL reports so that we can see what the student got as a score and what they answered for each question, feedback is very important to us

Thanks in advance

Hi flickilloway,

In the Gradebook for each content there should be a way to check the specific answers given by students by clicking on the report link. I highly recommend looking through these documentation:
