Feature image of Anchoring Script for School Assembly

A morning school assembly starts when all students, teachers, the principal and other members of the administration gathered in the assembly hall. If the gathering is chaotic and the students are disorganised, the anchor may guide them by saying:

“I would request the students to please stand in a line and maintain silence. The morning assembly will begin in a minute. Thank you.”

Once everyone is present and it’s time to start, the anchor may begin by saying a quote, a famous paragraph or a short, meaningful poem to capture everyone’s attention. Here, we have listed a few quotes that you can use in your script:

  • “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire; you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.” – George Bernard Shaw
  • “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eight. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” – Henry Ford
  • “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

After that, it is important to welcome everyone to the assembly. A welcome speech may look something like this:

“Hello and warm good morning to our respected Principal Sir / Ma’am, our beloved teachers, staff members and of course, my dear schoolmates. I am [your name] from class [x] , your anchor for today’s morning assembly. The date today is May 17th, 2022 and it is a Tuesday. We will start this beautiful day by saying our daily prayer first. I request everyone to please stand straight, join their hands and close their eyes. We will begin now. – [Saying the prayer.] “

After the daily prayer, if there are songs or hymns to be sung, the anchor may then ask the choir to proceed and lead everyone.

“Now, it is time for us to sing ‘Oh, Come, All Ye Faithful’ and praise the Lord. I would like to ask our school choir to proceed with the hymn and lead everyone. Today, Father [Pastor name] will also be joining us. Thank you.”

“We will now sing ‘God’s love is so wonderful.’ I would request our choir to lead everyone. Thank you.”

If there is a tradition in the school to read verses from The Bible every day during the morning assembly, the anchor may then ask the school pastor to come on the podium and read the verses.

“I would now like to request Father [name of the pastor] to kindly come up on the podium and read verses from The Bible. Everyone, please pay attention and listen to Father well. Thank you.”

“Now, it is time for us to take the National Pledge. Please stand at attention and repeat the pledge after me. –

India is my country; all Indians are my brothers and sisters.

I love my country, and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage. I shall always strive to be worthy of it.

I shall respect my parents, teachers and all elders and treat everyone with courtesy.

To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion.

In their well being and prosperity lies my happiness.

Thank you.”

“The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.” – William Blake

“It is always great to start the morning with great thought. Great thought has the potential to inspire, motivate and illuminate thousands of minds. Now, I would like to invite [name of the student] from class [x] to share with us the thought of the day.”

“Thank you, [name of the student]. That was really interesting. We would definitely ponder upon it. You may now take your position.”

“If people are informed they will do the right thing. It’s when they are not informed that they become hostages to prejudice.” – Charlayne Hunter-Gault

“Being aware of our surroundings, having the knowledge of what is happening around us, in our city, in our country and around the world, is indeed very important in this day and age. It helps us stay updated, increases our general knowledge and helps us stay safe. I would now like to request [name of the student] from class [x] to come up to the stage and share with us the important news for the day.”

“Thank you, [name of the student] . It was so nice to hear that the humanitarian bill has finally been passed in Parliament. It will definitely help many people. You may now take your position.”

“Feminism isn’t about making women stronger. Women are already strong, it’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.” – G.D. Anderson

“Today, [name of the student] from class [x] is going to share with us his/her views and opinions on the topic of ‘women empowerment and feminism’. I would like to request [name of the student] to please come up on the stage.”

“What a great speech. It indeed sheds light on the current situation of women in our country. Education and financial independence are truly important if we want to empower women. Thank you, [name of the student]. You may now take your position.”

Note: Here, we have used ‘women empowerment and feminism’ as an example. You may replace it with the topic provided to you and use a quote that matches the topic.

“Today, the following students are celebrating their birthdays:

[Name 1] from class [-]  [Name 2] from class [-] [Name 3] from class [-]

May God bless them. Let us all wish them and sing a birthday song for them.

‘Happy birthday to you,  Happy birthday to you,  Happy birthday dear students, Happy birthday to you.’

[Claps]

Thank you, everyone.”

Inviting the Principal to Say a Few Words

“I would now like to invite our respected Principal Sir / Ma’am to come up to the stage and say a few words to motivate us. Thank you.”

“That was indeed motivating and inspiring. There is indeed no shortcut to success. We must work hard and study diligently. We will surely remember your words. Thank you so much, Sir / Ma’am.”

National Anthem

“Now it is time for us to sing our National Anthem. I would request everyone to please stand at attention.”

[Jana Gana Mana]

“Thank you, everyone. You may now stand at ease.”

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” — Albert Einstein

“We have now reached the conclusion of our school’s morning assembly for today. Thank you for joining us. You may now move back to your respective classes. Have a good and productive day. Thank you.”

Note: This is a sample script meant to provide you with a basic idea of how to write an anchoring script for a school assembly. Feel free to use this script and edit it as per your needs.

Read Short Welcome Speech for Independence Day 2023

Indian Independence Day is one of those occasions which calls for a welcome speech because we as Indians celebrate this day as a festival. After 200 years of slavery under the British Empire, it was on August 15, 1947 that India became an independent nation.  This year marks the 77th year of India’s independence, which is being celebrated with zeal across the country as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav 2023.’

After many years of struggles, where our freedom fighters were hanged, imprisoned, and tortured, we could see the light of the day. On this day, schools across the nation honour their legacy and sacrifices by conducting the program. This can be presented as a long welcome speech for Independence Day or a short welcome speech for Independence Day.

Indian Independence Day 2023

“At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India shall awaken to freedom.” With these golden words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India claimed her rightful independence on 15th August 1947 after almost 200 years of British Raj.

India’s freedom was the result of years of struggle against British Imperialism which was fought by our freedom fighters, many of whom gave their lives for the nation so that their future generations could live in a free country. Several prominent leaders and revolutionaries come to mind when we talk about the freedom movement, including Jawaharlal Nehru, who became our first Prime Minister, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh and many more.

We should always remember and cherish this freedom that we struggled for so long and at the end of a long road, we finally achieved our rightful position as a sovereign nation.

The Meaning of Independence for India

While the Independence of India was a glorious event in the country’s history, it was also a very painful one. Independence came with the condition of partition, two dominions of India and Pakistan were created and people who had lived together for centuries were divided from each other. This shall always teach us that freedom is not free and the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

When we became independent, India was an extremely backward country with more than 75 percent of our population living in poverty, and food shortages, famines and illiteracy was rampant. We took an oath to make our nation one of the most advanced nations of the world and have been on that mission for the last eight decades.

Quotes on Indian Independence Day

"Freedom in mind, faith in our hearts, memories in our souls. Let's salute the Nation on Independence Day!" - Unknown

"Freedom is never dear at any price. It is the breath of life. What would a man not pay for living?" - Mahatma Gandhi

"Let new India arise out of peasants' cottage, grasping the plough, out of huts, cobbler and sweeper." - Swami Vivekananda

"One individual may die for an idea, but that idea will, after his death, incarnate itself in a thousand lives." - Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose

"Even if I died in the service of the nation, I would be proud of it. Every drop of my blood... will contribute to the growth of this nation and make it strong and dynamic." - Indira Gandhi

This year India is celebrating its 77th Indian Independence Day 2023 and it is a time when the entire nation should come together as one to celebrate our journey till now and march to an even glorious future where we create a better India so that our progeny can be proud of ourselves.

Students can use this welcome speech in English for Independence Day celebration 2023 in their schools and deliver a great speech to begin the auspicious day.

The Freedom Movement was an umbrella term that stood for a diverse set of individuals who wanted freedom for India and were willing to fight for it. The most important part of this freedom movement that led to the mainstream freedom struggle for a large part of the 20th century was the Indian National Congress. There were other parties too which had their own interest but all of the leaders were united in their dream of a Free India. You can read more about it on Vedantu website and download it in PDF format.

3. What was the reason for partition?

India, for all its achievements, still has a long way to go if it wants to be called a developed nation. We have been a perennially developing nation for the last 76 years and there are many issues that need to be addressed. We lack behind most of the world in almost all of the human development indices. Welcome Speech for Independence Day for Students and Children

Welcome speech for independence day.

Hello Everyone, I am here to present a welcome speech for Independence Day. Today it’s our 72 nd Independence Day and we should feel proud to be a part of an Independent nation that has freedom of speech, freedom to live life in our own way. We do not have to follow anybody’s slavery. But this was not the case 72 years ago when we were a slave to the British Government. India has been ruled by Britishers for almost 200 years and after a continuous struggle by our freedom fighters, we achieved independence on 15 th august 1947. On this day, the national flag was hoisted on red fort Delhi by Prime Minister Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. Since then we are celebrating Independence Day in every government department, school, and college. This is a day of pride and joy for every citizen of the country.

Welcome Speech for Independence Day

How we achieved Independence

India was once called “Sone ki chidiya” which means that we had abundant resources. Our land was productive, we have ample of minerals and rocks. We were home to the largest spice market. We also have a productive human workforce. This made the British government capture our country and use it for our own benefits.

They conspired against us through the “Divide and Rule policy” and slowly gained control over the country. The people of our country being illiterate and ignorant were easily deceived by Britishers and they gained control of our kingdoms. We became cheap slaves to the British government and thus they ruled us for many years.

Later on, some eminent personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Bhagat Singh and many more realized that we should fight for our rights. Later on, many freedom struggles took place and everybody participated in it. After years of fight, struggles, and hard work we finally gained freedom on 15 th August 1947 and became a free and independent nation.

Value of Independence

Being independent means freedom to speech and freedom to fundamental rights to each and every citizen of the country. Independence is important to lead a life of freedom. In the absence of independence, we would become a slave.  All the people should value the independence which we have achieved and should never forget our freedom fighters.

Independence and Responsibility of Citizens

The citizens of an independent nation also hold responsibility towards it. All the citizens of the country should realize their responsibility to build a nation of pride. One should fulfill their responsibility by doing simple deeds such as keeping the roads and surroundings clean, plant more trees, help poor people in need, following traffic rules, etc. A responsible citizen is a valuable citizen.

Activities  on Independence Day

Independence Day is also a day to show to the world the history of courage and bravery which our country has achieved. On this day our security forces do the parade and march past on red fort, we also show our fighting equipment to the world thus making India a superpower on the global platform. Various schools and colleges also arrange many no.of dance competitions, fancy dress, cultural events to celebrate independence day.

The independence which we have received is the result of fights and sacrifices of our freedom fighters. We should never forget this. Patriotism is above everything and we should inculcate a feeling of patriotism in our children since early childhood.

We should also teach our younger generations to respect our soldiers and also encourage them to have a career in national security. At last, I again wish you all happy independence day and hope together we can build a wonderful nation.

Morning Assembly Speech - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Morning assembly speech.

A morning assembly speech is a speech given at the beginning of the school day, usually in a school setting. It is usually given by a teacher, administrator, or student leader, and its purpose is to welcome students and set the tone for the day ahead. The speech may include announcements, inspiration, motivational messages, and other important information that the school community needs to know.

10 Lines On Morning Assembly Speech

Good morning everyone, it's a pleasure to stand before you all today.

Everyday is a new day full of opportunities.

Let's take a moment to reflect on our goals and aspirations for the day ahead.

Let's start the day with a positive mindset and strive to make the best of every moment.

Remember, it's important to be kind and respectful to everyone we interact with.

Let's work together to make our school a better place by spreading positivity and joy.

Let's set an example for others and show them what it means to be a good student.

Let's embrace the challenges that come our way and face them with courage and determination.

Let's be grateful for what we have and show appreciation to those who have helped us along the way.

With that, I wish you all a great day ahead and I hope you achieve all your dreams and aspirations.

Short Morning Assembly Speech

Good morning everyone. Today, I would like to bring to your attention a topic that is of utmost importance, not just for us students, but for the entire world- Climate Change.

Climate change has been the talk of the town for quite some time now, and it is high time that we take action. The evidence of climate change cannot be ignored any longer and it is our responsibility to make a difference. The rising temperatures, extreme weather conditions and melting of polar ice caps are just a few of the many consequences that we are facing today.

As students, we may think that we cannot make a significant impact, but every small step counts. We can start by being mindful of our daily activities, such as turning off the lights when we leave a room, using public transport or carpooling, and reducing our plastic usage. These simple changes in our lifestyle can have a big impact in the long run.

Moreover, we can educate ourselves and others about the importance of taking care of our planet and work towards making our surroundings greener. We can participate in local campaigns and volunteer for environmental initiatives. We can also voice our concerns and take a stand for the environment.

Long Morning Assembly Speech

Good morning to all my respected teachers, fellow students and our principal. Today, I have the opportunity to address you all on a very important topic that is essential for us to understand and take action upon, and that is Environmental Sustainability.

Our planet is facing numerous environmental challenges that have far-reaching consequences on our lives and the lives of future generations. From global warming to air and water pollution, deforestation, and more, the world today is facing numerous environmental hazards.

As responsible citizens of this world, it is our duty to contribute towards preserving our planet and making it a better place. Environmental sustainability is all about ensuring that the environment and natural resources are protected and preserved for future generations. It is a cause that affects us all and requires the collective effort of everyone to make a positive impact.

As students, we have a unique role to play in promoting environmental sustainability. We can start by implementing simple practices in our daily lives, such as conserving energy by turning off lights and fans when not in use, reducing water usage by fixing leaky taps, reducing waste by practising the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), and using public transportation, cycling or walking instead of driving. These small yet significant steps can go a long way in promoting environmental sustainability.

Moreover, it is also important for us to educate others about the significance of environmental sustainability. We can spread awareness in our communities by conducting seminars, debates, and campaigns. We can also participate in clean-up drives and plant trees, which not only help maintain the balance of the ecosystem but also make our environment greener and cleaner.

It is our responsibility to protect and preserve the planet, and we can do so by taking small yet meaningful steps towards environmental sustainability. We have the power to make a difference, and by working together, we can create a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.

Understanding Shared Responsibility

Let us understand this with a story. Once upon a time, there was a small village surrounded by lush green forests, crystal clear rivers and abundant wildlife. The villagers were happy and lived in harmony with nature. However, as time passed by, the villagers started exploiting the resources of the forest, polluting the rivers and killing the wildlife. The once vibrant and lively village turned into a bleak, polluted and lifeless place.

One day, a young girl named Aisha moved to the village. She was deeply disturbed by the state of the environment and decided to take action. She started by spreading awareness about the importance of preserving the environment and the consequences of exploiting its resources.

Aisha organized clean-up drives, planted trees and created compost pits to reduce waste. She encouraged the villagers to switch to renewable sources of energy and adopt sustainable living practices. Slowly but surely, the villagers started to follow her lead and the village began to transform. The once-polluted rivers became clean and clear once again, the trees started to grow tall and the wildlife returned.

Aisha's efforts did not go unnoticed and soon, her village became an example for others to follow. People from nearby villages came to visit and were inspired by the transformation. They went back to their villages and implemented the same practices, resulting in a chain reaction of positive change.

In conclusion, environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility, and it is up to us to ensure that we leave behind a better world for our children and future generations.

Biden’s upcoming graduation speech roils Morehouse College, a center of Black politics and culture

President Biden speaks in Atlanta.

When he gives the commencement address at Morehouse College , President Biden will have his most direct engagement with college students since the start of the Israel-Hamas war at a center of Black politics and culture.

Morehouse is in Atlanta, the largest city in the swing state of Georgia, which Biden flipped from former President Trump four years ago. Biden’s speech Sunday will come as he tries to make inroads with a key and symbolic constituency — young Black men — and repair the diverse coalition that elected him to the White House.

The announcement of the speech last month triggered peaceful protests and calls for the university administration to cancel over Biden’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas. Some students at Morehouse and other historically Black campuses in Atlanta say they vociferously oppose Biden and the decision to have him speak, mirroring the tension Biden faces in many communities of color and with young voters nationally.

Morehouse President David Thomas said in an interview that the emotions around the speech made it all the more important that Biden speak.

Biden’s Morehouse College graduation invitation draws backlash

Biden’s invitation as commencement speaker at Morehouse draws criticism among faculty and students over his handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

April 24, 2024

“In many ways, these are the moments Morehouse was born for,” he said. “We need someplace in this country that can hold the tensions that threaten to divide us. If Morehouse can’t hold those tensions, then no place can.”

The speech comes at a critical moment for Biden in his general election rematch against Trump. Biden is lagging in support among Black voters and people under 30, groups that were key to his narrow 2020 victories in several battleground states, including Georgia.

Fifty-five percent of Black adults approved of the way Biden is handling his job as president, according to an AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll in March, a figure far below earlier in his presidency. Overall, 32% of 18- to 29-year-olds approved in the same poll.

“This is a global catastrophe in Gaza, and Joe Biden coming to pander for our votes is political blackface,” said Morehouse sophomore Anwar Karim, who urged Thomas and school trustees to rescind Biden’s invitation.

Recent scenes on American campuses reflect objections among many young voters about Israel’s assaults in Gaza. Biden has backed Israel since Hamas militants killed more than 1,200 Israelis and took hundreds of hostages on Oct. 7. That includes weapons shipments to the longstanding U.S. ally, even as Biden advocates for a cease-fire, criticizes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tactics and the civilian death toll in Gaza surpasses 35,000 people, many of them women and children.

Biden says ‘order must prevail’ during campus protests over Gaza

President Biden defended the right to free speech but says ‘order must prevail’ on college campuses across the country.

Many younger Black people have identified with the Palestinian cause and have at times drawn parallels between Israeli rule of the Palestinian territories and South Africa’s now-defunct apartheid system and abolished Jim Crow laws in the U.S. Israel rejects claims that its system of laws for Palestinians constitutes apartheid.

“I think that the president will do himself good if he does not duck that, especially when you think about the audience that he will be speaking to directly and to the nation,” Thomas said.

Sunday’s speech will culminate a four-day span during which Biden will concentrate on reaching Black communities. On Thursday, the White House is hosting plaintiffs from the Brown vs. Board of Education case that barred legal segregation of America’s public schools. The following day, Biden will address an NAACP gathering commemorating the 70th anniversary of the landmark decision.

Former U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, a longtime Biden ally who helped broker his speech at Morehouse, said he understood students’ concerns but emphasized that Biden has pressured Netanyahu and supports a two-state solution for the Israelis and Palestinians. Trump, meanwhile, has effectively abandoned that long-held U.S. position and said Israel should “finish the problem” in Gaza.

“That’s nowhere in the conversation,” Richmond said.

The debate over Biden’s speech at Morehouse reflected a fundamental tension of historically Black colleges and universities, which are dedicated to social justice and Black advancement and run by administrators who are committed to keeping order.

Polls show that college-educated youth voters are focused on the war in Gaza, which poses possible electoral problems for the president.

“We look like a very conservative institution” sometimes, Thomas said. “On one hand, the institution has to be the stable object where we are today in the world.”

But, he added, the university’s long-term purpose is to “support our students in going out to create a better world.”

Blowback started even before Thomas publicly announced Biden was coming. Faculty sent executives a letter of concern, prompting an online town hall. Alumni gathered several hundred signatures to urge that Thomas rescind Biden’s invitation. The petition called the invitation antithetical to the pacifism the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a Morehouse alumnus, expressed when opposing the Vietnam War.

Some students note that leaders of Morehouse and other HBCUs did not always support King and other civil rights activists who are venerated today. Morehouse, for instance, expelled the actor Samuel L. Jackson in 1969 after he and other students held Morehouse trustees, including King’s father, in a campus building as part of demanding curriculum changes and the appointment of more Black trustees.

Students organized two recent protests across the Atlanta University Center (AUC), a consortium of historically Black institutions in Atlanta that includes Morehouse. Chants included “Joe Biden, f— off!” and “Biden, Biden, you can’t hide. We charge you with genocide,” along with expletives directed at Thomas.

Metal detectors, fear, frustration. College commencements altered amid Gaza war protests

At many universities across the country, graduation for the Class of 2024 will feel more like making it through airport security than a procession through a free-flowing campus green or a cheering stadium crowd.

May 5, 2024

“Our institution is supporting genocide, and we turn a blind eye,” said Nyla Broddie, a student at Spelman College, which is part of the AUC. Brodie argued Biden’s Israel policy should be viewed in the broader context of U.S. foreign policy and domestic police violence against Black Americans.

Thomas said he “feels very positive about graduation” and that “not one” Morehouse senior — there are about 500 at the all-male private school — has opted out of participating. “That’s not to say that the sentiments about what’s going on in Gaza don’t resonate with people in our community,” Thomas said.

Thomas met privately with students as did several trustees. The Morehouse alumni association hosted a student town hall, featuring at least one veteran of the Atlanta Student Movement, a civil rights-era organization.

But there was a consistent message: Uninviting the president of the United States was not an option. When students raised questions about endowment investments in Israel and U.S. defense contractors, they said they were told the relevant amounts are negligible, a few hundred thousand dollars in mutual funds.

“I think folks are excited” about Biden coming, said Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, the senior pastor at King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Warnock said Biden is in “a great position” to talk about student debt relief, increased federal support for HBCUs and other achievements.

HBCUs brace for flood of applications after Supreme Court affirmative action decision

School administrators say the ruling opens a door for HBCUs to fill a gap for students seeking an educational experience in which Black identity and culture are celebrated.

Sept. 22, 2023

HBCUs have not seen crackdowns from law enforcement like those at Columbia University in New York City and UCLA. However, Morehouse and the AUC have seen peaceful demonstrations, petitions and private meetings among campus stakeholders. Xavier University, a historically Black university in Louisiana, withdrew its commencement invitation for U.N. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, citing a desire among students “to enjoy a commencement ceremony free of disruptions.”

Whether Morehouse graduates or other students protest Biden or disrupt the ceremony remains to be seen. Student protest leaders say they are unaware of any plans to demonstrate inside during the commencement.

Thomas, Morehouse’s president, promised that forms of protest at commencement that “do not disrupt ceremonies” will not result in sanctions for any students.

But he also vowed to end the program early if disruptions grow.

“We will not — on Morehouse’s campus — create a national media moment,” he said, “where our inability to manage these tensions leads to people being taken out of a Morehouse ceremony in zip ties by law enforcement.”

World Hypertension Day- May 17

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed teachers, and dear friends,

Today, we gather on a special occasion – World Hypertension Day. It’s a day that reminds us of the importance of taking care of our health, particularly our cardiovascular well-being.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often called the ‘silent killer’ because it typically has no symptoms but can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure if left unchecked.

As young individuals, we may think that hypertension only affects older adults. However, with the rise in unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyles, and stress, hypertension is increasingly affecting people of all ages, including the youth.

So, what can we do about it? Firstly, let’s make healthy lifestyle choices. Let’s aim to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit our intake of salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Let’s also prioritise regular physical activity and find healthy ways to manage stress.

Secondly, let’s raise awareness about hypertension within our families, schools, and communities. Let’s encourage our loved ones to get their blood pressure checked regularly and to seek medical help if needed.

Lastly, let’s remember that prevention is always better than cure. By adopting a healthy lifestyle now, we can reduce our risk of developing hypertension and safeguard our long-term health.

On this World Hypertension Day, let’s pledge to take proactive steps towards a heart-healthy lifestyle. Together, let’s strive towards a world where hypertension is no longer a silent threat but a manageable condition.

Thank you.”

May this guide serve as a roadmap for delivering an engaging and impactful presentation. Approach the assembly with enthusiasm, empathy, and a commitment to fostering a sense of unity and learning within your school community. Make the May 17 assembly, a memorable and enriching experience for all.

Screens show the voting result during the vote on a resolution to bestow full membership to the state of Palestine.

UN general assembly votes to back Palestinian bid for membership

Assembly votes 143 to nine, with 25 abstentions, signalling Israel’s growing isolation on the world stage

The UN general assembly has voted overwhelmingly to back the Palestinian bid for full UN membership, in a move that signalled Israel’s growing global isolation amid alarm over the war in Gaza and the extent of the humanitarian crisis in the territory.

The assembly voted by 143 to nine, with 25 abstentions, for a resolution that called on the UN security council to bestow full membership to the state of Palestine, while enhancing its current mission with a range of new rights and privileges, in addition to what it is allowed in its current observer status.

The highly charged gesture drew an immediate rebuke from Israel. Its envoy to the UN, Gilad Erdan, delivered a fiery denunciation of the resolution and its backers before the vote.

“Today, I will hold up a mirror for you,” Erdan said, taking out a small paper shredder in which he shredded a copy of the cover of the UN charter. He told the assembly: “You are shredding the UN charter with your own hands. Yes, yes, that’s what you’re doing. Shredding the UN charter. Shame on you.”

The other nations that voted against the resolution were Argentina, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea. The UK abstained.

The Palestinian envoy, Riyad Mansour, pointed out the vote was being held at a time when Rafah, the southernmost city that is the last haven for many Palestinians in Gaza, faced attack from Israeli forces.

“As we speak, 1.4 million Palestinians in Rafah wonder if they will survive the day and wonder where to go next. There is nowhere left to go,” Mansour said. “I have stood hundreds of times before at this podium, often in tragic circumstances, but none comparable to the ones my people endured today … never for a more significant vote than the one about to take place, a historic one.”

Late on Friday the US government said it was “reasonable to assess” that the weapons it had provided to Israel had been used in ways that were “inconsistent” with international humanitarian law – but found there was not enough concrete evidence to link specific US-supplied weapons to violations or to warrant cutting the supply of arms.

In a highly anticipated report to Congress, the state department said the assurances given by Israel that they had been using US-supplied weapons in accordance with international humanitarian law (IHL) were “credible and reliable”.

The report, which had been held up for several days by debate within the state department, expressed deep misgivings about Israeli compliance with IHL but said the US did not have sufficient evidence about individual cases to recommend that arms supplies be suspended.

It came two days after Joe Biden expressed his own misgivings over the Israeli use of US-supplied weapons, and suggested they underpinned his decision last week to hold up a shipment of particularly powerful US-made bombs .

Friday’s UN resolution was carefully tailored over recent days, diluting its language so as not to trigger a cut-off of US funding under a 1990 law. It does not make Palestine a full member, or give it voting rights in the assembly, or the right to stand for membership of the security council, but the vote was a resounding expression of world opinion in favour of Palestinian statehood, galvanised by the continuing deaths and famine caused by Israel’s war in Gaza.

Even before the vote, Israel and a group of leading Republicans urged US funding be cut anyway because of the new privileges the resolution granted to the Palestinian mission.

The US mission to the UN, which voted against the resolution, said it would use its veto again if the question of Palestinian membership returned to the security council for another vote.

“Efforts to advance this resolution do not change the reality that the Palestinian Authority does not currently meet the criteria for UN membership under the UN charter,” the mission’s spokesperson, Nathan Evans, said. “Additionally, the draft resolution does not alter the status of the Palestinians as a “non-member state observer mission”.

Under the resolution, the Palestinian mission will have the right to sit in the general assembly among other states in alphabetical order, rather than in its current observer seat at the back of the chamber. Palestinian diplomats will have the right to introduce proposals and amendments, they can be elected to official posts in the full chamber and on committees, and will have the right to speak on Middle Eastern matters, as well as the right to make statements on behalf of groups of nations in the assembly.

But the resolution also makes plain that “the state of Palestine, in its capacity as an observer state, does not have the right to vote in the general assembly or to put forward its candidature to United Nations organs.”

Richard Gowan, the UN director at the International Crisis Group, said: “In essence, it gives the Palestinians the airs and graces of a UN member, but without the fundamental attributes of a real member, which are voting power and the right to run for the security council.”

The general assembly resolution was crafted to fall short of the benchmark set in a 1990 US law that bans funding of the UN or any UN agency “which accords the Palestine Liberation Organization the same standing as member states”.

The main faction in the PLO, Fatah, now controls the Palestinian Authority, which the Biden administration is backing to govern Gaza, which is currently run by Hamas, after the war is over.

Despite the wording in the resolution making clear Palestine would not have a vote, Israel called on the US to cut funding for the UN, and a group of Republican senators announced they were introducing legislation to do that.

“The US should not lend credibility to an organization that actively promotes and rewards terrorism. By granting any sort of status at the UN to the Palestine Liberation Organization, we would be doing just that,” Senator Mitt Romney said in a written statement. “Our legislation would cut off US taxpayer funding to the UN if it gives additional rights and privileges to the Palestinian Authority and the PLO.”

On Thursday night, Israel’s security cabinet approved a “measured expansion” of Israeli forces’ operation in Rafah, after ceasefire talks in Cairo stalled. The US adamantly opposes the Rafah offensive, and has paused the delivery of a consignment of bombs, and President Biden has threatened further restrictions on arms supplies if Israel presses ahead with the attack.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, vowed to defy US objections, saying Israel would fight on “with our fingernails” if necessary. On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) took control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, after ordering civilians in the east of Rafah city to evacuate. Since then more than 150,000 people have fled the area. On Friday, the UN reported intense clashes between the IDF and Palestinian militants on the eastern outskirts of the city. The fighting has cut off aid supplies to Gaza at a time of spreading famine.

Jan Egeland, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council , said on X that he had been told by NRC workers in Rafah that “the IDF assault is intensifying with continuous, massive explosions. There is no fuel, transportation, nor safe evacuation areas for most of the remaining 1.2 million civilians.”

The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said during a visit to Nairobi that the situation in Rafah was “on a knife’s edge”.

“A massive ground attack in Rafah would lead to [an] epic humanitarian disaster and pull the plug on our efforts to support people as famine looms,” he said.

U.N. General Assembly Adopts Resolution in Support of Palestinian Statehood

U.N. General Assembly Backs Palestinian Membership Bid

The united nations general assembly approved the resolution by a vote of 143 to 9 with 25 nations abstaining. the assembly can only grant full membership with the approval of the security council..

“A ‘yes’ vote is a vote for Palestinian existence. It is not against any state, but it is against the attempts to deprive us of our state. That is why the Israeli government is so opposed to it. Because they oppose our independence and the two-state solution altogether.” “This is your mirror. So that you can see exactly what you are inflicting upon the U.N. charter with this destructive vote. This is — You are shredding the U.N. The United Nations General Assembly on Friday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution declaring that Palestinians qualify for full-members status at the United Nations, a highly symbolic move that reflects growing global solidarity with Palestinians and is a rebuke to Israel and the United States.

The resolution was approved by a vote of 143 to 9 with 25 nations abstaining. The Assembly broke into a big applause after the vote.

But the resolution does not mean a Palestinian state will be recognized and admitted to the United Nations as a full member anytime soon. The Assembly can only grant full membership with the approval of the Security Council, and, if history is a guide, the United States would almost inevitably wield its veto power to kill such a measure, as it did in April.

Even though a majority in the General Assembly have long supported Palestinian statehood, the resolution was the first time the body had voted on the issue of full membership. The resolution declares that “the State of Palestine is qualified for membership in the United Nations” under its charter rules and recommends that the Security Council reconsider the matter with a favorable outcome.

The resolution was prepared by the United Arab Emirates, the current chair of the U.N. Arab Group, and sponsored by 70 countries. The United States voted no, along with Hungary, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia and Nauru.

“The vast majority of countries in this hall are fully aware of the legitimacy of the Palestinian bid and the justness of their cause, which faces fierce attempts to suppress it and render it meaningless today,” said the U.A.E. ambassador, Mohamed Abushahab, as he introduced the resolution on behalf of the Arab Group.

Though largely symbolic, the resolution does provide Palestinians with new diplomatic privileges. Palestinians can now sit among member states in alphabetical order; they can speak at General Assembly meetings on any topic instead of being limited to Palestinian affairs; they can submit proposals and amendments; and they can participate at U.N. conferences and international meetings organized by the Assembly and other United Nations entities.

The 193-member General Assembly took up the issue of Palestinian membership after the United States in April vetoed a resolution before the Security Council that would have recognized full membership for a Palestinian state. While a majority of council members supported the move, the United States said recognition of Palestinian statehood should be achieved through negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

Frustration with the United States has been brewing for months among many senior U.N. officials and diplomats, including from allies such as France, because Washington has repeatedly blocked cease-fire resolutions at the Security Council and has staunchly supported Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza, even as civilian suffering has mounted.

“The U.S. is resigned to having another bad day at the U.N.,” said Richard Gowan, an expert on the U.N. for the International Crisis Group, a conflict prevention organization. But he added that the resolution “gives the Palestinians a boost without creating a breakdown over whether they are or are not now U.N. members.”

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the U.N., told the Assembly ahead of the vote that Palestinians’ right to full membership at the U.N. and statehood “are not up for negotiations, they are our inherent rights as Palestinians.” He added that a vote against Palestinian statehood was a vote against the two-state solution.

Israel’s ambassador to the U.N., Gilad Erdan, a sharp critic of the U.N., said voting for a Palestinian state would be inviting “a state of terror” in its midst and rewarding “terrorists” who killed Jewish civilians with privileges and called member states endorsing it “Jew haters.”

Robert A. Wood, a U.S. ambassador to the U.N., said that while the U.S. supported a two-state solution as the only means for sustainable peace, “it remains the U.S. view that unilateral measures at the U.N. and on the ground will not advance this goal.”

Mr. Wood said that if the Assembly referred the issue back to the Council, it would have the same outcome again with the U.S. blocking the move.

The Palestinians are currently recognized by the U.N. as a nonmember observer state, a status granted to them in 2012 by the General Assembly. They do not have the right to vote on General Assembly resolutions or nominate any candidates to U.N. agencies.

France, a close U.S. ally and one of the five permanent members of the Security Council, has supported the Palestinian bid for statehood breaking away from United States’ stance at the U.N. both at the Council and the Assembly vote. “The time has come for the United Nations to take action with a view to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, on the basis of the two-state solution,” said Nicolas de Rivière, France’s ambassador to the U.N., in his address on Friday.

The Assembly session, which was expected to flow over to Monday because of the long list of speakers, was not without moments of performative drama.

Mr. Erdan, Israel’s ambassador, held up the picture of Hamas’s military leader, Yahya Sinwar, considered the architect of the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, with the word “President,” and then a transparent shredder, inserting a piece of paper inside it, and said the member states were “shredding the U.N. charter.”

Mr. Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador, at the end of his speech raised his fist in the air, visibly chocking back tears, and said “Free Palestine.” The Assembly broke into applause.
