The Gift of Speech

Speech is one of the great gifts of God. It is the means by which the thoughts of the heart are communicated. It is with the tongue that we offer prayer and praise to God. With the tongue we convince and persuade. With the tongue we comfort and bless, soothing the bruised, wounded soul. With the tongue we may make known the wonders of the grace of God. With the tongue also we may utter perverse things, speaking words that sting like an adder.

The tongue is a little member, but the words it frames have great power. The Lord declares, “The tongue can no man tame.” It has set nation against nation, and has caused war and bloodshed. Words have kindled fires that have been hard to quench. They have also brought joy and gladness to many hearts. And when words are spoken because God says, “Speak unto them my words,” they often cause sorrow unto repentance .

Of the unsanctified tongue the apostle James writes: “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” Satan puts into the mind thoughts which the Christian should never utter. The scornful retort, the bitter passionate utterance, the cruel, suspicious charge, are from him. How many words are spoken that do only harm to those who utter them and to those who hear! Hard words beat upon the heart, awaking to life its worst passions. Those who do evil with their tongues, who sow discord by selfish, jealous words, grieve the Holy Spirit ; for they are working at cross-purposes with God.

The apostle, seeing the inclination to abuse the gift of speech, gives direction concerning its use. “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth,” he says, “but that which is good to the use of edifying.” The word “corrupt” means here any word that would make an impression detrimental to holy principles and undefiled religion, any communication that would eclipse the view of Christ, and blot from the mind true sympathy and love. It includes impure hints, which, unless instantly resisted, lead to great sin. Upon every one is laid the duty of barring the way against corrupt communications.

It is God’s purpose that the glory of Christ shall appear in his children. In all his teaching, Christ presented pure, unadulterated principles. He did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Constantly there flowed from his lips holy, ennobling truths. He spoke as never man spoke, with a pathos that touched the heart. He was filled with holy wrath as he saw the Jewish leaders teaching for doctrines the commandments of men, and he spoke to them with the authority of true greatness. With terrible power he denounced all artful intrigue, all dishonest practises. He cleansed the temple from its pollution, as he desires to cleanse our hearts from everything bearing any resemblance to fraud. The truth never languished on his lips. With fearlessness he exposed the hypocrisy of priest and ruler, Pharisee and Sadducee.

Guard well the talent of speech; for it is a mighty power for evil as well as for good. You can not be too careful of what you say ; for the words you utter show what power is controlling the heart. If Christ rules there, your words will reveal the beauty, purity, and fragrance of a character molded and fashioned by his will. But if you are under the guidance of the enemy of all good, your words will echo his sentiments.

The great responsibility bound up in the use of the gift of speech is plainly made known by the Word of God. “By thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned,” Christ declared. And the psalmist asks, “Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoreth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. He that putteth not out his money to usury, not taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.”

“Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.” The wild beast of the forest may be tamed, “but the tongue can no man tame.” Only through Christ can we gain the victory over the desire to speak hasty, unchristlike words. When in his strength we refuse to give utterance to Satan’s suggestions, the plant of bitterness in our hearts withers and dies. The Holy Spirit can make the tongue a savor of life unto life.

Words as Jesus talks about are as true as the sun rising every day. I have used them to hurt people in my youth. It was not until I was reborn that I realized that I was wrong and started to change my way of talking to my fellow man. And that’s when I noticed that people looked at me differently and with some respect that I never experienced before, I still struggle with holding my tongue when some use their words to hurt. But I try to turn the other cheek, and some times it works and some times!!!! I find it is easier to retaliate so when I find myself in that position I now just walk away. It usually works, but not always. What makes it more difficult is how sinful this world is.

The Gift of Speech

What Balaam's donkey and under-represented minorities have in common.

By Adina Gerver

Commentary on Parashat Balak , Numbers 22:2 - 25:9

After the Israelites successfully defended themselves against the attacking Amorites, the Moabite king, Balak, asked Balaam to curse the Israelites in order to weaken them. Following several rounds of negotiations with Balak’s representatives and with God, Balaam accepted Balak’s charge on the condition that he would only say what God told him to.

On the journey, Balaam’s donkey suddenly swerved off the road, pressed Balaam’s foot against a wall alongside the path, and finally, simply sat down in the middle of the road. After each incident, Balaam beat the donkey, not seeing the angel of God that had blocked the donkey’s path.

After the third beating, God “opened the donkey’s mouth” and she asked Balaam: “What have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times?” God then revealed the angel to Balaam, and the angel reprimanded Balaam, who admitted his mistake. Bilaam then continued on towards Moab, where, much to Balak’s chagrin, he repeatedly blessed the Israelites instead of cursing them.

Why the talking donkey? The story would not have been substantially different without it, and, at first read, it is difficult to see what it adds. This anomalous talking donkey did not escape Jewish commentators. Midrash Numbers Rabbah (20:14) explains that God “closed the mouth of the animal [all animals], for if she spoke, they [people] could not subject her and stand over her. For this [donkey] was the stupidest of creatures and this [Bilaam] was the wisest of the wise, and as soon as she spoke he could not stand before her.”

Subjugation, in the rabbinic view, is made possible merely by the inability to speak. The donkey’s sudden, surprising voice in this story flips the power dynamic, rendering Balaam powerless in the face of her newfound authority.

Speech is a profound expression of power–and the denial of it a crippling means of oppression–around the world. Many authoritarian governments impose strict censorship of media, preventing exposure of corruption and human rights abuses to the public.

In Somalia, journalists are not permitted to interview government officials and are heavily censored. Two journalists there were recently severely beaten by militiamen.  Even a government’s written guarantee of protection for free speech is no guarantee of freedom of expression.

In Pakistan, whose 1973 constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, thirteen journalists were killed and forty more were abducted or arrested in 2008, while media that did not self-censor suffered retributive attacks.  In addition to silencing the media, repressive regimes also silence the voices of dissidents in blatant and sometimes violent ways.

Even in democracies, the voices of ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, poor people, and numerous other marginalized populations are vastly underrepresented in many societies. This silence translates into a lack of power that often leads to lack of access to basic social services and, at times, even the violation of human rights. Many NGOs work with such populations to help them make their voices heard.

CACTUS (“Center for Working Together for Community Support”), an AJWS grantee, works with rural and indigenous communities in the Mixteca region in Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2006, the community experienced violent police crackdowns against protestors who were rallying for indigenous rights and an end to government corruption. Censorship and monitoring of NGOs’ activities made the community feel powerless.

In response, CACTUS began to empower local people to speak out against injustice. In one of its projects, it facilitates a radio station, Radio Rabiosa (“Rabid Radio”), which is run entirely by teenagers. The teens use Radio Rabiosa to share music and culture, as well as information about social protest movements. Bety Cariño, CACTUS’s executive director, expressed the importance of giving voice to these teenagers: “The radio programs are the voices of the community,” she says. “We’ve never been invited to speak , never had the opportunity to articulate who we are. This breaks the silence .”

Proverbs teaches us that speech is a gift given freely by God: “A person may arrange his thoughts, but his ability to express them in language comes from the Lord” (Proverbs 16:1). Let us work to ensure that the voices of the poor and marginalized do not remain silenced, and that the power of speech, a gift from God, becomes fully accessible as a tool for blessing and justice for everyone.

the gift of speech

These Are The Gifts

Looking back in history..

By Ralph C. Smedley

the gift of speech

The following is an excerpt from a December 1957 article written by Toastmasters International founder Ralph C. Smedley.

Not only at Christmas, but throughout the year, we are the recipients of gifts of incalculable value. Because they are so freely given, so constantly available, we tend to lose our appreciation for them. They become commonplace. We need to realize their value.

For example, there is the gift of speech—the power to communicate with others. We accept it as a matter of course, and all too often, we abuse it, or fail to make good use of it.

In your Toastmasters club, you are working to improve your ability to communicate, share your ideas with others and create better understanding. The gift of speech is given to you, in principle, for you to use as you will. If you truly appreciate it, you will wish to make the best possible use of it. That is why we practice speaking and listen to evaluations. We gain skill by practice, and we improve by heeding our evaluators.

Try to think of a world in which there is no communication. Can you imagine what life would be like if you were unable to speak to others, or to listen when they speak to you? There would be no sharing of ideas, no way to gain cooperation. There would be no civilization. If we could not communicate our ideas with each other, there could be no understanding, and no working together.

In your Toastmasters club, you are making use of this greatest of gifts, and as you use it, you discover another priceless gift, the gift of opportunity .

Opportunity awaits you in your own club—opportunity to prepare yourself to take advantage of other opportunities which are all around you in your daily life. These are the gifts which last. Accept them with gratitude, and use them with diligence, to make your own life better, fuller and more worthy in its production.

Paid $250 for a "screen" was told there is no speech issue. 2 months later assessments reveal LPD and communication disorder. You didn't pick up on this?

Photo of Akemi l.

I paid for a speech evaluation for my daughter - I was told that she had no speech issues and that "she is only 4". A few months later after her 5th birthday, I brought her to psychologist who diagnosed her with a language disorder and possible early onset dyslexia. Please, if you believe your child may have a speech impediment or language disorder - do not bring them here.

I'm only rating Melissa, the front desk clerk. I have never felt more embarrassed than she made me feel. She is very condescending when speaking to you and doesn't give you a chance to talk. There was a miscommunication about my son having "straight Kaiser" (Melissa's words), as oppose to Kaiser through medical. She accused me of not clarifying the 2 when I've never had to disclose that information with my son's previous speech companies. She stated that, " They normally don't take medical but she will work it out". She seems to get extremely annoyed at any minor inconvenience when it should be her job to handle and not seek to reprimand the client. As of now my son is still a client. The speech therapist and Tracy (the owner) were very nice and extremely professional. I will continue to go for my sons sake but I hope something like this will not happen again. I'm writing this to all my nonverbal/ autism mommies. It's hard enough on us already. There is no need to make someone feel inferior.

My son has been coming her for a year and I'm truly happy with the service he's been receiving. All the speech therapist are awesome and Melissa who works at the front desk is extremely helpful with all my questions. My son looks forward to every Thursday.

Agreed with previous reviews- front desk staff is atrocious! Melissa happened to be out on our first appointment which was why it all ran smoothly. She repeatedly spoke over me when I was attempting to resolve a billing issue and flatly wouldn't listen to me in my attempts to clarify how it could be resolved and continued to escalate the interaction into a confrontation. Very, very uncomfortable Have only seen an assistant after our initial eval and she's ok. She tries hard but is a bit awkward in the way that people who don't have kids but are interacting with them can be. She seems skilled though and has gotten us good results already in 5 visits. Unfortunate that I don't feel comfortable returning

I sent a message about getting help for my son and received a call back 4 months later.

I love it here, and so does my son. Everyone is so helpful, welcoming, and professional. My son sees Stephanie. She's made work fun for my toddler. He gets so excited about coming to our appointments. His improvement over the past months have been night and day. So very happy. Melissa at the front desk is fantastic. She remembers each and every child , what they like, what they dislike, like they were her own. She makes sitting in the lobby easy and fun for myself, as I sit and wait for my little one to finish. Over all GOS is one of the best facilities I've ever been too. Thank you ladies!

I was very pleased with the professionalism of their staff right from the very beginning. My 4 year old son's therapist was extremely knowledgeable which made it easier for us to support him at home. I highly recommend The Gift of Speech!

Photo of Ashley B.

Went in for an appointment and was told I came in on the wrong day. When I walked in it seemed like no one wanted to speak with me. I stood at the front counter and the people looked at each other for a minute before finally asking if I had an appointment. They told me to come back Wednesday ( which was apparently the date I was scheduled). I didn't go back because I didn't feel comfortable when we arrived.

Great place! Very professional! I trust these practice with my own kids. I would not recommend a play if I didn't trust them with my own kids.

The Gift of Speech

TheGiftOfSpeech.jpg

On the first day of the first week of Earth, Genesis begins with “And God said . . .” Later in Genesis, Eve was fashioned out of man’s rib, “And the man said . . .”—the first recorded words of a human being. God had spoken, and mankind, made in the image of God, could likewise speak, whereas none of the other beings in creation could use words in that way. Clearly “speech” was a special gift from the Creator.

That doesn’t mean we have always used this gift to the best of our ability.

I always had a fear of public speaking. In fact, I was downright terrified. In college, I wouldn’t show up for finals where I had to speak in front of others. In my last year of law school, when I had to be in moot court, you could say I didn’t shine. I molded my law career as a transactional attorney, putting deals together in the back room.

Then I went through a vast change in my life, left the pursuit of law, and dug deeply into consciousness and healing studies. One day I got a very strong message from Spirit that I was to bring my healing work to the world. Seriously, me? I was willing but the flesh was weak. So I decided that the only way to get over my fear was by the process of immersion. In one day, I booked myself to give a seminar once a week for 12 consecutive weeks, in 12 different venues.

At the first workshop I used a trick I had learned as a mountain climber. There, I had learned to traverse dangerous vertical “friction slabs” where there is no way to protect yourself, no cracks or nubbins for feet and hands, just pure balancing. The way I conquered my fear was to convince myself I was walking across a kitchen floor. So to overcome my fear of public speaking, I convinced myself, in my strong-willed way, that there was actually no audience.

I walked into the room, pointed at someone, and without so much as a “hello” to the group, said, “you’re first!” I would work with that audience volunteer as if there was no one in the room watching, and when finished with him, I would call up another. By the time I got to the 12 th session, people were lined up to get in, and I could at least glance at the audience. Today I talk at events and workshops with thousands of participants, without notes and even without knowing what my topic will be. I have learned to get out of my own way and let Spirit work through me.

Why do I tell you about this? Because you, too, may have avoided exposing yourself to a wider audience for your work. Or you may have trouble communicating even on a one-to-one basis. Do you mumble or stumble over your words when in a confrontational situation? Can you express your feelings to someone else? Do people misunderstand your intentions because you haven’t spoken clearly?

Here are five tips for developing your gift of speech so you can communicate better—at work and at home.

  • Have the courage to say what you think. You have something valuable to contribute to the conversation; don’t be afraid that your input isn’t worthwhile. Be open and honest.
  • Remember that communication involves not only spoken words, but also body language and nonverbal cues. Your whole body can talk, especially your hands and face. Use larger gestures if addressing a large group. If your arms are crossed and shoulders are hunched, you are saying that you’re unwilling to listen or to communicate.
  • Enunciate. Are people always asking you to repeat yourself? Try to speak clearly. Consciously slow down your speech a bit; if you talk too fast, others will think you’re nervous and find you difficult to understand.
  • Pretend you’re talking on the radio or on TV. Would an audience that can’t see you get the drift of what you’re saying? Raise and lower your pitch, animate your voice, and use an appropriate volume.
  • Learn to listen. When you really understand what someone else is saying, your response will be so much more effective.

Your ability to express yourself will grow as you practice good communication skills. Use the gift of speech wisely, and your relationships, both personal and business, will prosper.

At state dinner for Japan, blossoms and bonhomie on the menu

White house guests included actor robert de niro, former figure skater kristi yamaguchi, and bill and hillary clinton.

The first state dinner for Japan in nearly a decade was festooned with cherry blossoms. Lots and lots of cherry blossoms.

In the East Room of the White House on Wednesday evening, President Biden reminded the dinner guests — including actor Robert De Niro, former figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, and Bill and Hillary Clinton — that cherry blossoms signified possibility. He began his four-minute toast, alongside Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, by saying that the blossoms “remind us that we can begin anew every year. That tomorrow can be a better day than today.”

Biden also told the story of receiving a large, shiny envelope of letters a few days after his inauguration in 2021. Inside were notes of appreciation from Japanese students who stuttered, just like the president had in his youth. We’re the same , the letters conveyed.

The Style section

“Well, we are the same, Japan and the United States,” Biden told the guests. “We may be divided by distance, but generation after generation are brought together by the same hope, the same values, the same commitment to democracy and faith.”

Kishida echoed these sentiments in his speech, delivered in English. But in a departure from diplomatic tradition in the Biden era, Kishida didn’t borrow lines from an Irish poet. Instead, he quoted both “Star Trek” — the bilateral relationship should “boldly go” into the future — and John F. Kennedy, from a 1961 state dinner for Japan: “The Pacific Ocean does not separate Japan and the United States. Rather, it unites us.”

Dinner began with thick slices of cured salmon, laid on a springy mattress of ruby red grapefruit and crowned with avocados, cucumbers and shiso leaf tempura. The inspiration for the sushi-like dish was the “iconic California roll,” according to White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford.

The entree of dry-aged beef rib eye contained nods to both American and Japanese cuisine: morel mushrooms from Oregon and greens from Ohio were adorned with sesame oil sabayon and a blistered shishito pepper butter.

Not even dessert was safe from cherry-blossom diplomacy. The salted-caramel pistachio cake was enveloped in a matcha ganache, flanked by cherry ice cream, and drizzled with raspberry.

Cherry blossoms patterned the sage-green tablecloths. Cherry-blossom centerpieces towered over the guests. The springtime color scheme was pastels: pinks, periwinkles and lavenders. The flower arrangements included Jill Biden’s favorites: peonies, roses and hydrangeas. Even the floor was transformed into a vinyl river of spring blossoms and gold-dappled koi fish — a symbol of “friendship, peace, luck and perseverance,” the first lady said earlier.

The after-dinner entertainment was singer Paul Simon, a favorite of both Jill Biden and the Japanese prime minister. His first song was “Graceland.”

The merry, cherry state dinner drew out the very rich — Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Apple CEO Tim Cook — and the very Washington: The guest list included the secretaries of the Treasury, State, Energy, Commerce and Homeland Security departments.

It was “great” to be back in the White House, said Bill Clinton as he walked toward the dinner, pointing to a portrait of Hillary hanging on the wall. Hillary, when asked her thoughts about the upcoming presidential election, deflected. “Oh, we’re having a good time tonight,” she said.

Also present were a handful of governors from key swing states, such as Gov. Roy Cooper (D) of North Carolina.

Compared with recent state dinners — the Bidens have hosted the leaders of France, India and South Korea — it was a smaller affair (with around 225 guests ), full of formality and lacking subtlety: From the spread to the decor to the toasts, the emphasis was on the sweetness of shared achievements and the promise of fresh hopes, despite the wars raging in Gaza and Ukraine, and the specters of Japan’s neighbors, China and North Korea.

As they gave their toasts, Biden and Kishida stood in front of panel of traditional Japanese fans, each pleat signifying the many different paths a life can take, according to Carlos Elizondo, the White House social secretary.

Unlike Biden, who doesn’t drink alcohol, Kishida is known as an “enthusiastic” practitioner of drinking diplomacy, according to Nippon TV. During Kishida’s time as foreign minister, he reportedly competed with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov over who how much they could drink while discussing matters of state. This was considered to be Kishida’s “diplomatic strength” in his bid to become prime minister, reported the Diplomat in September 2021, as neither of his competitors was the drinking type.

At an arrival ceremony on the South Lawn on Wednesday morning, Biden, wearing his trademark aviator sunglasses and a navy blue suit, lauded recent Japanese actions that also serve American interests. The prime minister pushed for sanctions against Russia when it invaded Ukraine, strengthened Japan’s defense arsenal and rekindled a relationship with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol (with an assist by the Biden administration, which hosted a summit between the two countries at Camp David in August).

Speaking after Biden on the South Lawn, Kishida vowed to take Japan’s relationship with the United States even further — “covering space and the deep sea,” he said in Japanese.

Japan will join American space missions, the leaders announced, with plans for a Japanese astronaut to be the first non-American to walk on the moon.

But these dreams of celestial camaraderie between the two countries could be dashed by domestic issues. Both Biden and Kishida have been dogged by low popularity ratings. After a fundraising scandal rocked his Liberal Democratic Party, Kishida has been charged with leading reform efforts, which may include a snap election. In the face of mounting social inequality, Kishida has also vowed to pursue a “new form of capitalism” for the people of Japan.

Biden has struggled with high inflation and surging costs throughout his presidency. Enthusiasm for him has lagged among left-leaning Democrats, who have been critical of his support of Israel as it continues to bombard Gaza.

The state dinner guest list reflected these political concerns — though, when asked, few attendees wanted to discuss politics.

Neither Bezos nor Cook nor De Niro confirmed whether they planned to donate to or campaign for Biden. Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen did not share her thoughts on the new inflation numbers.

When she arrived, former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards did not miss an opportunity to talk about abortion rights. “I think women’s rights are the most important things going on in this election,” she said, describing it as a motivating issue for women — and men.

The night before the state dinner, the Bidens took the Kishidas to BlackSalt, a D.C. restaurant renowned for its sustainable seafood. (President Biden had the crab cakes.)

And the Bidens gave the prime minister and his wife a few gifts: a custom framed lithograph and two-volume Billy Joel LP set (autographed by the singer), an autographed soccer ball signed by both the U.S. and Japanese women’s national soccer teams, and, of course, a framed painting of a Yoshino cherry tree — the one planted by the two first ladies last spring.

An earlier version of this story misreported the name of South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol. This version has been updated.

Tom Golisano gives STARability $5 million gift for new center. How will services expand?

the gift of speech

Naples resident and philanthropist Tom Golisano has given $5 million to the STARability Foundation for its future home in North Naples that will help the organization expand services.

STARability offers a range of programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities so they are empowered and engaged in the community.

The gift from Golisano, the founder of Paychex, will go toward STARability’s future headquarters at 2655 Northbrooke Drive in a 42,000-square-foot building where Hodges University had operated.

More: Through a merger, STARability acquires site for new headquarters in North Naples

“This generous gift from Tom Golisano is a monumental step forward for STARability and our community,” Karen Govern, chief executive officer of STARability, said in a news release.

“It brings us one step closer to breaking down barriers and providing greater inclusive opportunities for growth, learning and social connections in a supportive environment where every individual can thrive,” she said.

The gift will enable STARability to accommodate the growing community and more than double client capacity.

How will the gift be used?

Golisano founded the Golisano Foundation to spearhead his substantial philanthropic support around the United States and worldwide to hospitals and other organizations.

With more than $60 million in gross assets, the Golisano foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the U.S. devoted to supporting programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“We are extremely grateful to Mr. Golisano for believing in our mission and future plans and coming alongside us to help open the doors to many more in need,” Govern said. “We believe our new campus will become a model center, not just locally, but regionally and nationally.”

Last month STARability announced it had acquired the property at 2655 Northbooke Drive which encompasses five acres for its new campus.

Southwest Florida Music Education Center had purchased the property from Hodges in 2022 for a little over $10 million; a merger between STARability and the music school became effective March 28.

What is the next step?

The Northbrooke property will serve as STARability’s future permanent center and the group's plans to redevelop the site have begun. More details will be announced at a later date.

Golisano said in a news release that he is pleased to help STARability create a new and much-needed center so individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can gather, learn, receive services and support in an inclusive environment.

More: Collier County leaders back Lakewood residents in fight against Starability's proposed center

“This center, and STARability's expansion of programs will transform the lives of countless individuals for years to come,” Golisano said.

STARabilility has operated out of leased space for many years and its client base has grown to more than 360 individuals and a staff of 41 along with 200 volunteers.

In 2023, the nonprofit provided more than 30,000 program services to clients.

Programs focus on personal growth, learning and social activities to break barriers so the clients are more inclusive in the community.

STARability earlier had plans to build its future home in the Lakewood community in East Naples at the closed clubhouse on three acres. Lakewood residents objected, saying the project was commercial in nature and not the right fit for the location.

Caitlin Clark Got the Coolest ’Ted Lasso’ Gift From Jason Sudeikis

  • Author: Mike McDaniel

In this story:

Iowa Hawkeyes basketball star Caitlin Clark captured the 2024 John R. Wooden Award, an honor given to the most outstanding player in men's and women's basketball. Clark was joined by Purdue's Zach Edey as the 2024 award recipients.

It was Clark's second time winning the honor, and earlier this week, actor Jason Sudeikis—who has been a mainstay at Iowa's postseason games over the last month—attended the awards ceremony and gifted Clark with a Ted Lasso- themed jersey.

Iowa's women's basketball account posted pictures of Clark, holding up a No. 22 AFC Richmond jersey that was gifted to her by Sudeikis, with the caption "We all BELIEVE in 22."

We all 𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗩𝗘 in 22 🤩 @AFCRichmond 🤝 @IowaWBB #Hawkeyes pic.twitter.com/vp1EFHp9o0 — Iowa Women's Basketball (@IowaWBB) April 13, 2024

Clark's outstanding season captivated college basketball, even as she and the Hawkeyes fell short in the national championship game to South Carolina.

Clark is expected to be the No.1 pick in the WNBA draft to the Fever on Monday night, which has sent Indiana's season-ticket prices skyrocketing.

Clark will be must-see TV as she kicks off her professional career this summer.
