The Paris Assignment

Written by Rhys Bowen Review by Joanne Vickers

Paris, 1931. Bowen’s story has a conventional beginning: Naïve young English girl, Madeleine Grant, goes to Paris to study at the Sorbonne and immediately falls for a charming French journalist, Giles Martin. He disappears, re-appears, gets her pregnant, and marries her. Flash forward eight years when the Nazis overwhelm Paris. Giles, half-Jewish and rising star of the political left, joins the resistance forces, and sends his wife and their son Olivier back to her family in England.

The novel becomes compellingly complicated at this point. Madeleine must deal with the Blitz in London and decides to send her son to the country for safety. Almost immediately, she learns that he has been killed when his train was bombed. Heartbroken, she enlists in the British secret service. Bowen painstakingly describes the difficult and extensive mental and physical training that women candidates receive before they are allowed to go to France to work undercover against the Nazis. The women Madeleine trains with are an engaging group of different personalities who enliven the plot.

Meanwhile, the reader discovers that Olivier’s identity has become confused with another boy. Surviving a concussion, but confused about his circumstances, he is sent off to Australia as an orphan where he lives on a farm run by brutal Irish nuns.

The novel alternates between Olivier’s and Madeleine’s experiences. Bowen perfectly develops both narratives with absorbing details about several characters and different geographical environments. And she tops her story off with a realistic, satisfying ending!

the paris assignment prime video

A courageous wife, mother and resister confronts the devastation of World War II in a heartbreaking and hopeful novel by the bestselling author of THE VENICE SKETCHBOOK and THE TUSCAN CHILD.

Londoner Madeleine Grant is studying at the Sorbonne in Paris when she marries charismatic French journalist Giles Martin. As they raise their son, Olivier, they hold on to a tenuous promise for the future. Until the thunder of war sets off alarms in France.

Staying behind to join the resistance, Giles sends Madeleine and Olivier to the relative safety of England, where Madeleine secures a job teaching French at a secondary school. Yet nowhere is safe. After a devastating twist of fate resulting in the loss of her son, Madeleine accepts a request from the ministry to aid in the war effort. Seizing the smallest glimmer of hope of finding Giles alive, she returns to France. If Madeleine can stop just one Nazi, it will be the start of a valiant path of revenge.

Though her perseverance, defiance and heart will be tested beyond imagining, no risk is too great for a brave wife and mother determined to fight and survive against inconceivable odds.

About the author

Rhys Bowen is the New York Times bestselling author of two historical mystery series as well as several internationally bestselling historical novels, two of which were nominated for Edgar Award

Rhys was born in Bath, England and educated at London University but now divides her time between California and Arizona. Her books have been nominated for every major mystery award and she has won twenty of them to date, including five Agathas.

She currently writes two historical mystery series, each very different in tone. The Molly Murphy mysteries feature an Irish immigrant woman in turn-of-the-century New York City. These books are multi-layered, complex stories with a strong sense of time and place and have won many awards including Agatha and Anthony. There are 19 books so far in this series plus three Kindle stories, Rhys’s daughter, Clare Broyles, now cowrites the series with her

Then there is Lady Georgie, She's 35th in line to the throne of England, but she's flat broke and struggling to survive in the Great Depression. These books are lighter and funnier than Molly's adventures. They poke gentle fun at the British class system--about which Rhys knows a lot, having married into an upper class family rather like Georgie's.

As a child Rhys spent time with relatives in Wales. Those childhood experiences colored her first mystery series, about Constable Evans in the mountains of Snowdonia.

Her books have been translated into over 30 languages

The Paris Assignment: A Novel Kindle Edition

A courageous wife, mother, and resister confronts the devastation of World War II in a heartbreaking and hopeful novel by the bestselling author of The Venice Sketchbook and The Tuscan Child .

Though her perseverance, defiance, and heart will be tested beyond imagining, no risk is too great for a brave wife and mother determined to fight and survive against inconceivable odds.

Putin signs decree naming new Russian government, including replacement of defense minister

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a decree appointing a new government, including replacement of the defense minister with a former deputy prime minister who is an economics expert with no military background. He met with the new ministers and congratulated them on their new assignments, adding that he plans to meet with the outgoing ministers to discuss how they can “work effectively for the benefit of the Russian people and Russian state”.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a decree appointing a new government, including replacement of the defense minister with a former deputy prime minister who is an economics expert with no military background.

When Putin was inaugurated for a new six-year term on May 7, the government submitted its resignation in line with Russian law. Putin reappointed Mikhail Mishustin as prime minister three days later, which was quickly approved by the lower house of parliament.

On Sunday, he signed a decree moving Sergei Shoigu from his post as defense minister to head of the national security council. Putin also nominated deputy prime minister Andrei Belousov to take Shoigu’s place.

Putin also proposed names for some Cabinet members to return to their posts and Mishustin submitted names for several new ministers, all of which were approved by the parliament.

Shoigu has been widely seen as a key figure in Putin’s decision to send Russian troops into Ukraine. Russia had expected the operation to quickly overwhelm Ukraine’s much smaller and less-equipped army and for Ukrainians to broadly welcome Russian troops.

Instead, the conflict galvanized Ukraine to mount an intense defense, dealing the Russian army humiliating blows, including the retreat from an attempt to take the capital, Kyiv, and a counteroffensive that drove Moscow’s forces out of the Kharkiv region.

Shoigu also was shadowed by the arrest last month of deputy defense minister Timur Ivanov on charges of accepting huge bribes.

The decree by Putin largely retains the previous Cabinet, but names new energy, sports, transport, industry and agriculture ministers.

49ers to host Jets in 2024 Monday Night Football opener

Aaron rodgers will return to the monday night football stage to open 2024, by matt maiocco • published may 14, 2024 • updated on may 14, 2024 at 9:00 am.

The San Francisco 49ers do not have to wait long for one of their marquee games of the 2024 NFL season, as they will kick off the campaign with a contest against quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets at 8:20 p.m. ET on Sept. 9 on ESPN’s "Monday Night Football" at Levi’s Stadium, the NFL announced Tuesday morning.

The NFL is announcing several of the best matchups ahead of the complete unveiling of the regular season schedule on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

Rodgers, who grew up in Chico and played at Cal, will make his Northern California return in Week 1 to face his old nemesis. His 20th NFL season will begin against the organization that ended his season four times in the postseason while he played for the Packers.

In nine regular-season games, Green Bay went 6-3 against the 49ers with Rodgers at quarterback. But Rodgers is 0-4 against the 49ers in the postseason .

Most recently, the 49ers beat Rodgers 37-20 in the NFC Championship Game in January 2020 . Two years later, the 49ers upset the top-seeded Packers 13-10 on a frigid night at Lambeau Field in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Rodgers, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time NFL MVP , will get another crack at the 49ers with his new team.

The 49ers have opened the season only once before against the Jets, and it was a memorable game. On Sept. 6, 1998, the teams went to overtime before Garrison Hearst ended it with a 96-yard touchdown run for a 36-30 victory at Candlestick Park.

There is a large 49ers flavor on the Jets.

Head coach Robert Saleh served four seasons on Kyle Shanahan’s staff as defensive coordinator. In three seasons with New York, his teams are 18-33, including back-to-back years of 7-10.

Former 49ers linebacker Jeff Ulbrich is the Jets’ defensive coordinator. And among the former San Francisco players on New York's roster are defensive linemen and past first-round draft draft picks Solomon Thomas and Javon Kinlaw.

The defending NFC champions ended the 2023 season under the prime time lights, and that's exactly where they will begin the 2024 season.

Bills sign Dee Delaney, cut Quintez Cephus

  • Josh Alper ,

The Bills did a little roster shuffling on Thursday morning.

They announced that they have signed defensive back Dee Delaney to the 90-man roster. It’s a one-year deal with no other terms announced.

Delaney spent the last three seasons with the Buccaneers. He appeared in 49 regular season games and made five starts during his time in Tampa. He had 71 tackles and three interceptions in those contests.

In five playoff games, Delaney recorded two tackles.

The Bills opened a roster spot for Delaney by cutting wide receiver Quintez Cephus. Cephus signed with the Bills in late April after the NFL reinstated him from the gambling suspension that kept him off the field in 2023.

‘The Damned’ Review: In His Latest Look at America’s Margins, Roberto Minervini Travels Back to the Civil War

The Italian-born director has lived in the United States for more than two decades, bringing the insights of an outsider to overlooked communities in his first period piece.

The Damned

Set during the Civil War, a long way from the front lines, Roberto Minervini ’s “ The Damned ” continues the Italian helmer’s career-long examination of the rifts and affinities between overlooked segments of American society. Apart from one long, destabilizing battle with an unseen adversary, the portrayal is a relatively peaceful one, following a group of Union soldiers assigned to scout the Northwestern frontier in 1862. While the country is divided, this assignment brings together men of different backgrounds, fostering camaraderie and mutual respect (surprisingly, the topic of slavery never comes up, though God factors into multiple conversations).

Popular on Variety

With their full beards and blunt features, the men in Minervini’s cast look less like professional actors than the authentic Civil War soldiers seen in daguerreotypes of the time (especially Tim Carlson, of the family featured in “Stop the Pounding Heart,” as the Sergeant). Characters have a way of drifting in and out of Minervini’s films, and “The Damned” is no different, despite its more structured premise. A select group of troops travel to Montana, bonding among themselves for a time, before a run-in with Confederate snipers drastically reduces their ranks.

Minervini’s style has always blurred the lines between documentary and fiction, and here — in Civil War reenactment mode, as participants play themselves in period garb — he covers the ambush the way a war photographer might. DP Carlos Alfonso Corral, who shot Minervini’s striking black-and-white doc “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?,” chases after the soldiers as they duck for cover and attempt to return fire. Hidden by distant bushes, the enemy remains unseen, which makes the conflict that much more disconcerting.

Does “The Damned” really qualify as a war film? At times, the low-key approach may remind viewers more of Kelly Reichardt’s Oregon Trail saga, “Meek’s Cutoff,” in that both films (set less than two decades and two states apart) provide an alternative to the conventional Hollywood Western. For instance, “The Damned” doesn’t even bother to identify the names of its characters, rejecting the 20th-century focus on the individual — where heroic characters might be played by John Wayne or Henry Fonda — in favor of a collective sea of faces.

That’s something so many war movies get wrong: When men enlist in the Army, they agree to put the cause ahead of themselves. It becomes their duty to accept orders, however counterintuitive, whereas in Hollywood movies (of the past 50 years, at least), authority is nearly always wrong, and success is only possible when someone steps out of line and does what’s right. In reality, such behavior would almost surely get the fanatic (and many of his comrades) killed.

In a challenge to America’s own mythology, Minervini dispenses with such tropes, while allowing his characters — including a fresh-faced teen known only as ”Young Soldier” (Judah Carlson) — space to reflect on their reasons for signing up. They question the existence of God, debate the ideas of good and evil, and try to make sense of their mounting disillusion. “The Damned” has a tendency to meander, but in so doing, it strives toward something authentic.
