However, unlike academic books and journals which are usually peer-reviewed before being published, websites can potentially be written by anyone. So you do need to spend more time assessing their reliability.

: Make sure you refer to a variety of sources in your assignments - don't just cite websites, as this demonstrates a very limited range of research. Using a mixture of books, journals and websites will usually produce the best results.
  • Know your sources On-line training tutorial from Manchester University on evaluating academic sources

A straightforward Google search is easy - but it will give you millions of hits, most of which are irrelevant or not at the right level to use in your work. Search thoughtfully to save wasting time.

Choose your search terms carefully . Use speech marks to search for a phrase rather than separate words, for example "active reading". Use advanced search features to limit language or year. Consider whether there are synonyms for your search terms that you could also try.

Instead of searching Google try it's academic version - Google Scholar, or even better use the Library's own Summon search . These search across journal articles, books, chapters, theses, and other academic sources. Summon will show you resources you can read straight away as part of the Library's subscriptions, you can also limit results to 'peer reviewed' to ensure you are view the best quality results. Note that not all sites are indexed on Google Scholar and that some less reputable journals are included so you shouldn't rely on it.

  • Search Summon to find online academic sources

Bibliographic resource

Google Scholar is the academic version of Google. It allows you to search for scholarly literature (journal articles, books, patents) from a variety of sources, including academic publishers, professional societies, and online repositories.

It is unclear which publishers are included in Google Scholar, so it shouldn't be used as your only source for a comprehensive literature search. For references to reliable, academic sources search our Summon discovery service or databases covering your subject. Link to our full-text You can set your preferences on Google Scholar to show links to full-text articles in all of our e-journals. 1) Click on the three lines on the top left of the home screen. 2) Select 'Settings'. 3) Select 'Library Links' on the left of the screen. 4) In the search box type 'Reading' and select the 'Reading University Library - Full-Text @ Reading' option. 5) Save your settings. When you do a search, look for a 'Full-Text @ Reading' link to the right of references in your results list. This indicates that we have a subscription which will give you access to the article. Click on this link to access the full-text. If the 'Full-text @ Reading' link does not appear next to a reference it indicates that it isn't covered by our subscriptions and you probably won't be able to access the article. If you are off-campus you will need to login to access the articles. You will usually be prompted to login as soon as you click on the link to the article. If this doesn't happen you will need to look for an institutional or Shibboleth login link once you reach the journal's website. For more guidance see Accessing e-journals. Google Scholar Button Google have produced a plugin for Chrome, Firefox and Safari which allows you to easily search for and cite articles. Highlight the title of an article in the page you are reading and then click the Scholar button and it will search for the article on Google Scholar in a pop up window. To get a formatted reference for a search result press the quote button next to it and the reference will appear in three different styles. To make the most of this tool set up the University of Reading as a 'Library Link' using the instructions above.

Go straight to a reputable source : your Academic Liaison Librarian has collated good, reputable  academic online resources in your subject area . There are also more reliable alternatives to Wikipedia listed on the  Online dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference sources page .

  • Explore your subject guide
  • Online dictionaries and encylopedias

Use this checklist adapted from the Library's  Evaluating websites  to help you judge whether a web resource is reliable and appropriate:

essay on useful website

  • Who is responsible for the page/site?
  • Is it a reliable organisation (e.g. a well known university) or a subject expert?
  • Can you trust them?

Accuracy and reliability

  • Is the information correct?
  • Is the grammar and spelling correct?
  • Is it complete, or are they just giving one point of view?
  • Do they have their own agenda e.g. political organisations?
  • Is the information fact or opinion?
  • Is the information backed up by evidence? Is the evidence based on research? Is it reliable?
  • Can you tell how up-to-date it is?
  • Is it regularly updated? You don't want to quote out-of-date information

Audience / relevance

  • Is the information at the right level to be quoted in your project?
  • Is the site well structured and easy to navigate?
  • Are the links from the page up-to-date and valid?
  • If it is well designed and maintained then you can feel more confident about the information it provides.

It isn't usually acceptable to cite Wikipedia as a source in your assignments. Information on Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, so may be unreliable, and it often isn't at the correct level for university work.

However, Wikipedia can provide a brief introduction to a complex topic and give you an overview from which you can then do further in-depth research. You wouldn't cite Wikipedia, but it can get you started thinking about the topic.

  • Evaluating your sources (video) Brief video tutorial on what you need to think about when evaluating sources.
  • Evaluating your sources (transcript) Read the transcript.

You can use authoritative online resources as evidence in the same way that you would use books or journals. But beware - online resources are so easy to find and access that it might be tempting to do all your research on the web. This is not a good idea - there may be a lot of information online, but that doesn't mean it's the most suitable material for your assignment. For instance, a standard search will often produce a lot of newspaper articles that report on and summarise research. Such articles might be good evidence for an essay on media portrayals of topics, but not appropriate for a scientific literature review. However, the articles might help you find the original research to use directly.

: If you use a variety of sources, you can compare and cross-check what you read on websites with what you read in book chapters and journal articles.

Remember that information published on a website is someone else's work or ideas, so you will need to add an accurate citation.

Online resources provide evidence and examples to back up your own points and ideas, so they should be treated like any other source. Reference websites fully and accurately, including the date you accessed the site. Don't forget that visual information (e.g. pictures, photos, diagrams, graphs) from websites also needs to be referenced.

To cite a website in the body of your assignment (in the Harvard style), use the author's surname or the organisation that has responsibility for the website. If neither of these are obvious, use the title. Add the date the webpage was published. Example of an in-text citation:

The policy sets out an ambitious framework enable everyone to contribute to research and innovation (UKRI, 2023).

In the reference list give as many details as are available from this list in this order: Author, year of publication, title of webpage, web link, date accessed. Example of a full reference for a webpage:

UKRI (2023)  UKRI’s equality, diversity and inclusion strategy . Available at: https://www.ukri.org/publications/ukris-equality-diversity-and-inclusion-strategy (Accessed: 3 April 2023)

If you can't find a date of publication, use 'no date' in place of the year in the citation.

: If you are having difficulty finding the necessary details to reference a webpage, you might need to think about whether it is the kind of material that is academically valid - is it suitable to be used as evidence in your assignment?

Of course, you should review the results as the algorithm of this software doesn’t work perfectly—it can misjudge parts of speech, prepositions, and so on. But it’s also a nice check of your writing skills.
  • Reverso Speller is another spelling checker that can find any mistake. It’s also connected to several dictionaries so that you can see the definition and synonyms of the miswritten word. There are several types of corrections. All of them are illustrated at the end of the web-page. They even underline words the algorithm can’t recognize—so you won’t miss foreign words or rare terms.
  • Virtual Writing Tutor is another way to get a high-quality paper. You can check spelling and grammar, verify your word count, and evaluate if your text is paraphrased well. Moreover, Virtual Writing Tutor has a speech recognition tool. With its help, you can record your text to get a written document. You can also turn your text into an MP3 audio format and download it to your computer.
  • Slick Write is a safe way to check your document’s grammar and style. It works on the same principles as Grammarly does but also gives you a lot of statistics like vocabulary analysis, reading time, readability index, average paragraph length, and so on. The statistics are useful to improve your style, make the paper more readable, and original. Slick Write also has a tool called Associator. It helps a lot during the writing process because you can find connections for any word.

Write Better Website for Grammar Checking

  • Hemingway App . Searching for a free tool to check your readability? Give Hemingway App a try. You can use it whether online or via the desktop app. Just put in your text and get instant results. The service highlights all sentences that are difficult to read, passive voice usage, wordiness, and phrases with simpler alternatives.
  • Readable.io is one more tool to check your readability. Learn to use one of the scores like Flesch Reading Ease or Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level to determine how difficult your paper is to read and understand. The service underlines all the challenging parts, including passive voice, wordiness, and too many syllables. After corrections, you can check the text one more time to make sure it fits your needs.

Sample band 8.0+:

The website that I often use is called YouTube. It is a video-sharing website that allows users to upload, share, and view videos on a wide range of topics. I use it almost every day to watch videos, listen to music, and learn new things.

The reason why I use YouTube so frequently is that it offers a wide variety of content. I can find videos on almost any topic that interests me, from cooking to sports to educational content. I particularly enjoy watching music videos and live performances of my favorite artists, as well as tutorials on how to play musical instruments.

One of the things I like about YouTube is the recommendation feature, which suggests videos that I might be interested in based on my viewing history. This has helped me discover new content and channels that I might not have found otherwise.

Another great thing about YouTube is the community aspect. I can comment on videos, share them with friends, and even subscribe to channels that I like. This allows me to interact with others who share my interests and to learn from their experiences.

Overall, I think YouTube is a fantastic website that has something for everyone. It’s easy to use, offers a vast amount of content, and provides a platform for people to connect and share their ideas. That’s why it’s my go-to website for entertainment, education, and social interaction.

1. What effect has the Internet had on the way people generally communicate with each other?

“The Internet has had a significant impact on the way people communicate with each other. In many ways, it has made communication faster, more convenient, and more accessible. For example, people can now communicate with each other in real-time using instant messaging, video chat, and social media platforms. Moreover , with the rise of video conferencing, for example, people can now have face-to-face conversations with friends and family members who live in different parts of the world. This has helped to reduce feelings of isolation and has made it easier to maintain relationships over long distances.”

2. How do you think communicating by email is different from communicating by text message?

“When it comes to communication, there are many differences between communicating by email and by text message. In my opinion, one of the main differences is the level of formality. Emails tend to be more formal, while text messages are usually more casual. Another difference is the length of the message. Emails tend to be longer and more detailed, as they are often used for business or professional communication. Text messages, on the other hand, are typically shorter and more to the point.”

3. Why do you think the Internet is being used more and more for communication?

“In my opinion, there are several reasons why the internet is being used more and more for communication. Firstly, the internet offers unparalleled convenience and accessibility. With the rise of smartphones and other mobile devices, people can now access the internet and communicate with others from almost anywhere in the world. Secondly, the internet offers a wide range of communication tools, such as email, instant messaging, social media, and video conferencing. Each of these tools offers its own unique benefits and can be used to communicate in different ways.”

We know that waiting for feedback can be nerve-racking. If you select our faster deadline option, you’ll hear from your college essay coach in 12 hours or less – including on weekends and holidays.

Yes. All our college essay coaches are subject-matter experts and can help you make decisions regarding the content of your essay. Your coach will help you make a strong case for your admission.

Our essay coaches will provide feedback on…

  • Whether your topic is appropriate and how to strengthen it
  • Whether your essay demonstrates positive traits and authenticity
  • Whether the narrative flows smoothly and grabs the reader’s attention
  • How to dig deeper and show self-reflection and insight
  • What content is missing and should be added
  • What content is weak and should be removed
  • How to shorten your essay to meet a word count limit

However, we will never…

  • Write or rewrite content for you
  • Research or fact-check your essay’s content

If you have any questions, feel free to email [email protected].

When you submit your essay to our College Essay Editing & Coaching service, you’ll be asked to indicate what type of content feedback you would like to receive. You can choose from three options:

Dig deep and challenge me

Give me the standard treatment

Tread lightly

Whichever option you choose, you’ll receive in-depth content feedback from your essay coach. However, the type of feedback your essay coach provides may differ, and the option you should choose depends on what outcome you want from the review. You can always elaborate on what type of feedback you want in your note to your essay coach.

Learn more about the three options below.

Choose from three options

If you choose this option, we’ll challenge you to write the best possible essay – no content suggestions are off-limits, including reorienting your topic or reframing your story. Students who choose this option aren’t afraid to go back to the drawing board if it’ll increase their chances of getting accepted. You may have to roll up your sleeves and do some more work on your essay, but your essay will be much stronger because of it.

Select this option if your priority is to have the best possible essay, even if it requires some extra work on your side.

We’ll strike a balance between “dig deep and challenge me” and “tread lightly.” We may suggest changes to your structure and narrative, including removing weak content, elaborating on certain sections, and adding content to strengthen your arguments. You may have to rework sentences and paragraphs, but we won’t suggest major content changes.

With this option, we’ll focus on improving your essay in a way that requires little additional work from you. We’ll provide you with targeted suggestions for how to refine your essay’s structure and narrative, but we will work within your current structure and topic. While you may have to make a few tweaks here and there, we’ll aim to return you a polished draft that’s ready to be submitted to your chosen colleges.

Select this option if you are fairly satisfied with your essay and don’t want to make major changes or if you have limited time to revise.

At Scribbr, we promise to make every customer 100% happy with the service we offer. Our philosophy: Your complaint is always justified – no denial, no doubts.

A website is your brand’s gateway to digital success.

A strong brand presence isn’t just about visibility — it’s about making a lasting impact and resonating with your audiences. By merging design with functionality, a well-designed website can transform casual visitors into loyal customers, driving growth and solidifying your market position.

Importance of a website for online presence

The shift online has changed how businesses interact, operate, and grow. In this digital-first landscape, a website is a unique online space, extending your reach beyond local borders and a local audience.

Beyond visibility and connecting your brand to potential customers, partners, and investors, your website also acts as a strategic platform. A well-designed website harmonizes seamlessly with marketing efforts, leveraging search engine optimization (SEO), content-first marketing, and social media integration to bolster brand awareness and engagement.

In an increasingly connected world where over half of consumers turn to the internet for solutions, reviews, and purchases, your website propels your brand to the forefront, driving growth and visibility.

10 reasons why your business needs a website

If you’re still wondering, “Do I need a website?” here are ten more benefits of a website that’ll help you answer that question:

1. Showcases credibility and professionalism

A meticulously designed and well-curated website doesn’t just represent your brand — it elevates it. Greeting online visitors with intuitive user experiences, polished designs, and responsive performance signals that every facet of your business matters. This attention to detail conveys professionalism, making visitors more likely to engage with and invest in your offerings.

Modern websites do more than appeal visually, they also cultivate trust. Since consumers often vet brands online before making a purchase, a top-notch website proves you prioritize every touchpoint in the customer journey. It instills confidence in users, demonstrating that you value your brand and the audience interacting with it.

2. Increases brand awareness

Your website directly reflects your brand, showing visitors who you are and what your business represents. Every web design detail, from typography to content style, contributes to your brand’s identity and personality. Such meticulous branding differentiates your business from competitors and extends its reach beyond local boundaries. By cultivating a distinct and memorable identity, you ensure your brand messaging breaks down geographical barriers, resonating far and wide.

3. Provides 24/7 accessibility and convenience

Unlike a brick-and-mortar store with set operating hours, your website operates around the clock, offering products, services, and vital information without constraints. This constant availability provides unmatched convenience to potential customers and reinforces your brand’s dedication to meeting their needs. Build trust and foster a seamless user experience by ensuring visitors can consistently access content, shop, and find solutions on your site whenever they need to.

4. Enhances customer engagement

Interactive website features do more than display content — they actively engage visitors, converting passive browsers into leads and, eventually, loyal customers. Sharing industry expertise through blog posts, showcasing your authority via portfolios, and collecting user input through feedback forms all contribute to increasing engagement .

When you encourage active visitor participation — whether through making a purchase, leaving feedback, or engaging in community forums — you cultivate more robust connections with them. Customers who feel a sense of belonging and value within your community are more likely to return for future purchases and become enthusiastic brand advocates, driving immediate sales and sustained growth.

5. Enables data collection and analysis

Every visitor interaction, from clicks to conversions, provides website statistics that help you better understand your audience’s preferences, pain points, and challenges. With integrated tools like Google Analytics, you gain insights into user behavior, trace traffic sources , identify popular content, and map out navigation paths. By continually monitoring and interpreting this data, you can make informed decisions to refine your offerings and website marketing strategies. Tailoring your approach based on these insights lets your business pivot and remain responsive to customer needs, enhancing engagement and bolstering retention.

Loved by designers. Trusted by enterprises. Bring Webflow in-house at your company with advanced security, custom traffic scaling, guaranteed uptime, and much more.

6. Amplifies search visibility through SEO

Following website SEO best practices enhances your brand’s discoverability. By crafting quality content that offers genuine value, incorporating keywords your target audience is likely to use, and refining your site’s mobile performance, you optimize for search engines.

When potential customers look for queries related to your industry or offerings, an optimized website signals to search engines that it’s a relevant and authoritative source. This signal boosts your site’s chances of achieving top rankings, making it more visible to potential customers. This prime positioning offers a dual advantage — it increases the likelihood of clicks, directing more targeted, organic traffic to your website, while reinforcing your brand’s credibility and authority in the eyes of those users.

Since most users rarely venture beyond the first page of search results, an optimized site ensures you remain visible, accessible, and at the forefront of potential customer interactions.

7. Harnesses digital marketing avenues

Harnessing the full potential of digital marketing is pivotal for boosting your website’s bottom line . Your website anchors all your online endeavors. Every content piece you publish, email you send, and ad you run directs users back to this core hub. Through this centralized approach, your website offers a cohesive brand narrative, regardless of where visitors first encounter your business online. In the broader scope of digital marketing, this approach maximizes your influence and draws clear paths to conversion, weaving a cohesive, brand-enhancing story that increases profitability.

8. Evolves with audience preferences

Your website’s structure , from its content and design to its navigation, offers flexibility to adjust as trends and priorities shift, helping it remain relevant and user-centric. To promote a new product, consider crafting a dedicated landing page . If you aim to enhance user engagement, adjust website usability using direct feedback and collected metrics. Continuous updates and improvements also signal your brand’s dedication to delivering excellence and valuing customer feedback.

9. Establishes a competitive edge

A polished website is a crucial differentiator, particularly when marketing a small business in a saturated market. It anchors your brand’s digital identity and reflects its dedication, foresight, and ambition. When customers assess options online, a compelling website can tilt the scales in your favor, enabling you to stand out, even among industry giants.

10. Centralizes control over content

Owning a website offers total command over your content. Unlike the confines of social media — where character counts, shifting algorithms, and content boundaries can hinder your message — a website provides significantly greater flexibility.

On your site, you dictate everything, from the depth of your content and choice of imagery to the navigation paths visitors take. This control lets you meticulously tailor each site element for optimal impact. For example, strategic navigation paths can guide visitors smoothly, directing them to essential information or actions without overwhelming or confusing them, letting you present your brand’s story in its purest, most genuine form. Mastering this autonomy also ensures your website serves its purpose effectively, from informing visitors to converting leads.

Let’s get your business a website

A robust website is a foundational pillar for business success, increasing brand awareness, driving user engagement, and boosting conversions. And crafting that standout platform doesn’t have to be complex or challenging.

Offering a comprehensive, visual web development platform, intuitive design tools, and a wealth of resources, such as courses on developing a site plan and how to do a full site build , Webflow empowers you with everything you need to build your website from scratch. • What is the website?
  • About the website.
  • Why it is useful for me?

I use different websites for various purposes. But, mostly, I am curious about the website Google. It is one of the most exciting and impactful search engines I have ever seen.

Google is the most popular website, and it helps reduce our thinking and mental strain. It has lots of features that make our everyday life comfortable. We can watch lots of videos, and images, read multifarious articles, and newspapers, and learn about diverse things. If one searches any information link, it gives details about various other websites related to it. The information and sources are very relevant and up to the mark. There is no copyright issue on these websites. We can find every kind of information just by searching effortlessly and making people’s lives easier. Google has lots of new features that are very interesting to learn. This website is used by people worldwide as it provides accurate data with easy readability and perfection. It fetches correct information with links and sublinks. This website is more organized with new functionality, security, and privacy. Additionally, we can store our data with complete trust in this website.

When I was in class 3, I started using Google, which helped me research miscellaneous topics not present in the book. Even now, I need Google as support at every moment in my life. It has made reference work easy for me. Moreover, this search portal is the best website for storybooks, magazines, academic books, and comics, etc.

The technology and the advancements in digitization have surely brought plenty of revolutions. Today, you can easily find an array of websites serving varying purposes. However, if I had to name one useful site that I often visit, it would be YouTube.

With its significant establishment across the world, almost everybody is familiar with the fact that YouTube is a video-sharing website. Generally, users upload their videos on this platform and reach a wider set of audience. Right from well-established companies to newbie individuals, everybody and anybody can upload a video on this channel. Also, there are no restrictions in terms of the types of videos to be posted either. Every 24 hours, 30 million users log on to the YouTube site. Also, in a single day, people watch 1 billion hours of content each day. After its inception back in 2005, YouTube was purchased by Google in 2006 for a whopping amount of $1.50 billion.

One of the reasons behind this site is useful for everybody is because it features a huge amount of content. Whether you want answers to complex questions or learn a new skill, with YouTube, you can do wonders. Moreover, if you are a creator, you can upload videos on YouTube and earn a significant amount each month.

The complications of languages have always enticed me. As a result, I have tried to learn as many languages as possible, though I have been mostly unsuccessful due to limited scope until recently. Seeing me so eager to learn, one of my friends suggested I look into Duolingo, a website specialized in teaching the most popular foreign languages.

Since I got to know about this website, I have spent most of my leisure on this website. Although there are set daily goals for each language, I am learning more than one language simultaneously. There are advanced courses as well as courses designed for beginners like me in more than 25 languages. Each word has recorded pronunciations and corresponding pictures, making learning very convenient. There are ten levels of tests that are also easy to understand and the goals based on various common topics are efficiently completed. I have learned quite a bit of Spanish, German, and Arabic by now.

As mentioned earlier, I am a language enthusiast, and this website has been of great help to me. Now, there is an application for the same, but I prefer to work on the website. After a long time, I have got the opportunity to tick off some of my wishes from the list due to this website. What is more encouraging is that I can learn from any place, at any time, by just signing up. Apart from that, there are paid courses as well if one is interested. There is no inconvenience of attending physical classes, fees, travel, etc.

The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK: Challenges and Opportunities

essay on useful website

“ The UK’s nuclear industry faces a pivotal moment as the nation steers toward a net-zero carbon future ”

The newly released white paper from Imperial College London’s Energy Futures Lab, titled The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK: Challenges and Opportunities , provides a comprehensive examination of the UK's nuclear energy prospects, highlighting both the opportunities and obstacles in achieving significant nuclear power generation.

Click here to download this White Paper

The Current Landscape and Goals

The UK government has set ambitious plans for nuclear power, aiming for it to constitute 25% of electricity production by 2050. However, this ambition faces significant challenges, as most of the current 6.5GW of nuclear capacity is set to be decommissioned within the next decade. This stark reality underscores the urgency for new nuclear projects to bridge the impending gap in power generation capacity.

Critical Role of Nuclear Power

The white paper emphasises that nuclear power is crucial for achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the UK. Nuclear energy offers a low-carbon alternative that is essential for reliable electricity generation and for enhancing energy security. Globally, nuclear power remains a key component of many countries' energy strategies, driven by ongoing investments in research and development aimed at improving safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Key factors for the development of the UK’s nuclear energy are mounted around five key challenges:

1. Bridging the capacity gap

A significant gap has been identified between the planned nuclear capacities and the targeted 24GW by 2050. Bridging this gap will require substantial investment, which has implications for public finances and private sector involvement. The ongoing operation and maintenance costs and decommissioning expenses must also be factored into policy frameworks to ensure sustainable financing.

“ T he calculated cost to produce the remaining required gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power ranges from 5.2 to 10.4 billion pounds per year ”

2. Economic considerations

The economics of nuclear power is a pivotal issue addressed in the white paper. Balancing the high upfront capital costs against long-term electricity pricing is crucial for the viability of nuclear projects. The paper stresses the importance of strategic workforce planning, robust policy frameworks and diversified funding sources, including public-private partnerships, to ensure the financial sustainability of nuclear initiatives.

3. Workforce and skills development

A major focus of the white paper is the need for a skilled workforce. The aging demographic within the nuclear industry threatens to result in a significant loss of expertise as experienced professionals retire.

“ An analysis of the workforce demographics reveals that approximately 53% of the employees are over 45 years old, and 20% under the age of 34, signalling an imminent attrition of skills and expertise over the next decade ”

The paper calls for immediate interventions to address skill shortages and ensure knowledge transfer. This involves fostering talent through collaborative initiatives with academic institutions and research organisations, thus preparing the workforce to meet the industry's evolving demands.

4. Importance of international collaborations

International partnerships are highlighted as essential for advancing the UK's nuclear ambitions. Collaborations with organisations such as the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are crucial for technology sharing, accessing global expertise and cost-sharing. By aligning with international standards and promoting knowledge exchange, the UK can enhance its nuclear capabilities and ensure the adoption of best practices.

5. Public engagement, trust , and support

Building public trust and support for nuclear power is essential. The white paper advocates for public engagement initiatives to highlight the importance of nuclear energy in achieving net-zero objectives. Transparent communication and compensation schemes for communities hosting critical infrastructure are necessary to garner widespread support and mitigate opposition.

Strategic recommendations

The white paper concludes with strategic recommendations for developing the nuclear workforce, enabling international collaborations and implementing supportive policies. By addressing these areas, the UK can position itself as a leader in nuclear energy and drive the transition to a low-carbon economy.

The Future of Nuclear Power in the UK white paper offers an evidence-based evaluation of the realistic timescales, costs and required skillsets and collaborations needed for the UK to achieve its ambitious nuclear energy plan. It provides policymakers, industry stakeholders and the public with comprehensive insights into the opportunities and challenges of expanding nuclear power generation, aiming to contribute to the development of a sustainable and resilient energy future.

Governor Newsom signs bills to combat deepfake election content

SAN FRANCISCO – Taking action to address the use of deepfakes and other deceptive digitally generated or altered content in election campaigns, Governor Gavin Newsom today signed three measures to remove deceptive content from large online platforms, increase accountability, and better inform voters.

“Safeguarding the integrity of elections is essential to democracy, and it’s critical that we ensure AI is not deployed to undermine the public’s trust through disinformation – especially in today’s fraught political climate. These measures will help to combat the harmful use of deepfakes in political ads and other content, one of several areas in which the state is being proactive to foster transparent and trustworthy AI.”

Governor Gavin Newsom

Earlier today, the Governor announced signing legislation to protect the digital likeness of actors and performers by ensuring that AI is not used to replicate their voice or likeness without their consent.

Building on legislation signed by the Governor in 2019 to crack down on deepfakes in elections, the Governor today signed three bills related to election advertisements and communications.

AB 2655 by Assemblymember Marc Berman (D-Menlo Park) requires large online platforms to remove or label deceptive and digitally altered or created content related to elections during specified periods, and requires them to provide mechanisms to report such content. It also authorizes candidates, elected officials, elections officials, the Attorney General, and a district attorney or city attorney to seek injunctive relief against a large online platform for noncompliance with the act.

“AI-generated deepfakes pose a clear and present risk to our elections and our democracy. AB 2655 is a first-in-the-nation solution to this growing threat, and I am grateful to Governor Newsom for signing it. Advances in AI over the last few years make it easy to generate hyper-realistic yet completely fake election-related deepfakes, but AB 2655 will ensure that online platforms minimize their impact. The new law is a win for California’s voters, and for our democracy,” said Assemblymember Berman.

AB 2839, an urgency measure by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin (D-Santa Cruz), expands the timeframe in which a committee or other entity is prohibited from knowingly distributing an advertisement or other election material containing deceptive AI-generated or manipulated content. The bill also expands the scope of existing law to prohibit materially deceptive content of elected officials, candidates, elections officials and others, authorizing them to file a civil action to enjoin the distribution of such material.

“Signing AB 2839 into law is a significant step in continuing to protect the integrity of our democratic process. With fewer than 50 days until the general election, there is an urgent need to protect against misleading, digitally-altered content that can interfere with the election. With the enactment of AB 2839, California is taking a stand against the manipulative use of deepfake technology to deceive voters. I’m thankful that Governor Newsom signed this legislation to ensure that voters are equipped with the accurate information they need to make informed decisions this November,” said Assemblymember Pellerin, Chair of the Assembly Elections Committee.

AB 2355 by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) requires that electoral advertisements using AI-generated or substantially altered content feature a disclosure that the material has been altered. The bill authorizes the Fair Political Practices Commission to enforce a violation of these disclosure requirements by seeking injunctive relief to compel compliance or pursuing other remedies available to the commission under the Political Reform Act.

“I applaud the Governor for signing AB 2355, my proposal mandating that political advertisements using content created or significantly altered by generative AI, include a clear disclosure of this fact. The availability of tools to doctor images, video, and sound is not new. However, the rapid improvements in AI and Large Language Models have made it easier to create convincingly fake images, videos, and sounds. As these technologies become more accessible and are used in political campaigns, their impact on democracy requires urgent action. Voters must be informed when generative AI is used in political advertising to substantially alter media or create misleading content. Free speech and political expression are a cornerstone of our democracy, but we cannot lose sight of our humanity amid the advancement of artificial intelligence. This is a balanced policy that makes California the first state to include artificial intelligence under its campaign transparency rules,” said Assemblymember Carrillo.

Home to the majority of the world’s leading AI companies, California is working to harness these transformative technologies to help address pressing challenges while studying the risks they present. The state last month partnered with NVIDIA to launch a first-of-its-kind AI collaboration , and earlier hosted an AI summit convening leaders from across technology, labor, government, and academia to discuss how the technology can be used to benefit Californians. Last year, Governor Newsom signed an executive order laying out California’s measured approach focused on shaping the equitable and responsible use of AI while remaining at the forefront of AI innovation.
