Keynote - Locking a Presentation So It Can’t Be Edited

How to automatically play, loop, or restart a slideshow in Keynote

When you’re presenting a slideshow, the last thing you need to worry about is actually playing it. That should be the easiest part. Keynote offers a few simple ways to play your slideshow automatically . You can set it to start, loop, and restart without lifting a finger. This is handy for presentations that you want to play continually in a waiting room, conference room, or trade show.

Here, we’ll show you how to set up your Keynote slideshow to do just that – automatically play, loop, and restart.

Presentation Type in Keynote on iPhone

Automatically play, loop, or restart a Keynote slideshow

You have a few different options depending on your situation and when or where you’re playing your presentation:

  • Automatically play upon opening : You can set the presentation to automatically play when you open it. This is handy if you set up the slideshow and someone else needs to start it.
  • Loop the slideshow : This is an easy way to continually replay the slideshow after it ends.
  • Restart when idle : Maybe you don’t want to loop the presentation but have it automatically restart after a set amount of inactive time.

Presentation options in Keynote

  • Open your presentation in Keynote on your Mac and then access the settings by clicking the Document button on the top right.
  • Make sure the Document tab is selected at the top of the sidebar.
  • Check the box for the action you want to use: Automatically play upon open , Loop slideshow , or Restart show if idle for [time period]. You can use more than one at a time, too, if you like.

Automatically Play Loop and Restart in Keynote on Mac

On iPhone and iPad

  • Open your presentation in Keynote on your iPhone or iPad and then access the settings by tapping the three dots at the top.
  • Select Presentation Options > Presentation Type .
  • Enable the toggles for Loop Slideshow and/or Restart Show if idle [time period]. To automatically play the show, tap Self-Playing to mark a check for that option. This is different than playing the slideshow when it opens, like on Mac. Take a look at our how-to for the self-playing option .
  • Finally, tap Done to save the changes.

Play your presentation your way

These convenient options let you play your slideshow, so you don’t have to keep hitting a button to start or restart. Just set it up and let it play your way.

My Keynote file is locked and "cannot be unlocked."

I opened a keynote file this morning and discovered I couldn't edit the file because it was locked, so when I went to unlock it at the top I was told "The file 'file name' cannot be unlocked." All I could do was duplicate. Why can't I unlock my own files?

It's stored on iCloud in my Keynotes folder. That's where I keep most of my Keynotes files. I checked the permissions in the Get Info window and found something strange. Instead of listing me it had Fetching... listed as the only user with read/write permission. I've noticed a lot of my old keynote files are that way. Since when were the permissions changed to "Fetching..."?

There may be some issue (hopefully temporary) with access to your iCloud Drive.

Fetching... means exactly that: it is taking time to fetch the proper details (which should normally be instantaneous).

Are you able to access other files in iCloud drive?

What happens if, as a test, you drag one of those keynote documents from iCloud drive to a local folder?

Oct 1, 2020 3:38 AM in response to sperry1975

Where is the file stored? In the Finder, what do you see for permissions in the Get Info window?

Oct 1, 2020 9:08 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1

It moves it over to my drive, but the permissions don't change. Still fetching

Prompt for password when exiting presentation

Is it possible to prompt for a password when exiting a full screen presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint?

I need to be able to show a presentation constantly, whilst leaving my computer, but do not want anyone else to be able to jump onto the computer while I am away.

I've looked into setting the presentation as a screen saver, but my company has default screen savers so cannot use this option.

I also looked into software which can display a presentation when a computer is locked, again company restrictions.

Only other option I can think of is to leave my computer un locked and running the presentation, but require a password to exit the presentation, is this achievable via a macro ?

In excel I would use a simple macro to protect/unprotect. not sure if this would work in PP.

  • You don't want to use PowerPoint to prompt for a password. It's trivial to force it to close, bypassing the VBA, for explore like example by pressing ALT+F4. Your question is suffering a bit from the XY Problem . Try editing it to ask how to solve your problem, not how to implement your proposed solution. –  I say Reinstate Monica Feb 27, 2019 at 11:30
  • It'll probably be better to convert your PowerPoint to a video and then you could use/write an application that has the functionality you desire... –  Kinnectus Feb 27, 2019 at 11:31

Unfortunately this isn't possible as users could still exit the application via Alt + F4, or through Task Manager.

If the slideshow is being presented on an external display, then a possible solution is to physically protect the computer from being accessed by other people.

Keynote has this feature, you could try finding an emulator to emulate Keynote as an app. Keynote can also open Powerpoint files so you don't need a converter whatsoever. If you ever forget your password, I found out a simple fix for that. You can find the video here

There are methods for locking a computer when you are away. Some of them are:

Dynamic Lock on Windows 10 Lets you lock your PC when your phone goes out of Bluetooth range. For more info see Microsoft's article Lock your Windows 10 PC automatically when you step away from it .

Lock My PC This free tool lets you override the default Windows lock screen (where other admins could still log in) by disabling the mouse and disc drives. You can trigger this lock with your own hotkeys, make the lock screen transparent, and even shut down or log off the user once the lock screen is up for a set time.

Predator Locks the computer using a USB stick as the key.

10 Expert Tips to Create and Deliver a Killer Keynote Presentation

tips to create presentations, keynote presentation

So you’ve got a keynote presentation coming up, and you’re hitting the books to make sure you’re armed with the best plan possible. Besides taking notes from all the greats on TED, you’re reading up about a message structure that works, and looking for the perfect template.

While it seems like you’ve got your bases covered, like all things in life, there’s always a way to streamline the planning process.

According to Aaron Weyenberg , the UX Lead for TED and a self-professed “master of slide decks,” and the wizards behind Apple’s presentation slides , there are a number of tricks of the trade that you can rely on to create a rocking keynote presentation .

Below are some of our favorites. And to easily create a professional-looking presentation , sign up for Piktochart . It’s free and it allows you to make beautiful visuals without being a graphic designer.

1. Do your slides last

While most keynote speakers will typically build their presentation around the structure of a template, Weyenberg says that “building your slides should be the tail end of developing your presentation.” Before working on your slides, you should put together your main message, structure, supporting points – then practice and time your presentation. The reason for this, he says, is that the presentation needs to be strong enough to stand on its own. Approaching a keynote like this requires a shift in thinking.

While a beautiful set of slides is imperative to your presentation, it should not be central to it.

Weyenberg said it best: “The slides are just something you layer over [the presentation] to enhance the listener experience.”

Observe these 2017 Google I/O keynotes, especially CEO Sundar Pichai’s – the role of the slides are to support what the speaker is saying – not the other way around.

2. Get creative with photos

Often times, presenters will be far too literal or cheesy with their image choice. Weyenberg suggests to use images that are simple, yet punchy – and pairs nicely with your spoken words. He says to look for photos that are:

  • Related to your keynote’s concept
  • Are not complex in terms of composition

how to make inspiring keynote presentations

3. Simplify charts and graphs

While most presenters will simply drop an image of their charts and graphs into their deck, Weyenberg points out that it might be a bit “unsightly.” If you need to use data to back a point that you’re making, you should make the extra effort to make it more attractive – and this can be done by recreating it in your presentation maker .

There are a couple benefits to doing this:

  • It will make your presentation seem consistent and well-thought out
  • You’ll have control over colors, typography, and more.

weyenberg graph, typography in charts examples

4. One theme per slide

According to the designers of Apple presentation slides, less is certainly more. Trying to cram too many ideas on one slide can only work to your detriment. Beyond ideas, the same goes for statistics.

Let’s play a little game: For the following idea, how many slides would you use? “The developer program is incredibly vibrant. We have over six million registered developers. Demand for this show has never been greater. We sold out in just over a minute [71 seconds].”

While the average person might think that 6 million and 71 seconds would belong on the same slide and be short and sweet enough, let’s compare it with what Apple’s CEO Tim Cook did.

He only leveraged two slides: The first said “6 million,” and the second: “71 seconds. Sold out.”

how to make presentation attractive

5. Create a visual experience with data

Taking a leaf again from Apple’s presentation book, once you’ve gotten the hang of having just one stat per slide – you should also make it as visual as possible.

visual presentations

One data point per slide, combined with it being visually interesting – is sure to be memorable.

6. Practice Really Makes Perfect

Imagine the late Steve Jobs, a legendary keynote presenter, still rehearsed for months before a presentation. According to Brent Schlender , one of the co-authors behind the Steve Jobs biography “Becoming Steve Jobs,” Jobs would rehearse and prepare “exhaustively” for all of his public appearances.

Despite being a natural on the stage, Jobs never would wing it, he came to the show well prepared.

“I once spent an entire day watching him run through multiple rehearsals of a single presentation, tweaking everything from the color and angle of certain spotlights, to editing and rearranging the order of the keynote presentation slides to improve his pacing,” remembers Schlender.

While you may not be a perfectionist like Jobs, you are likely also not nearly as good of a presenter as he is – so practice really makes perfect in this case.

7. Tell A Consistent Story

Circling back to Weyenberg’s tips – he suggests that in a good slide deck, every slide should feel “like part of the same story.” Think of your deck like a story – every slide should feel cohesive to the big picture message you’re trying to communicate – as opposed to random ideas juxtaposed together.

You can do this by:

  • Using the same or similar typography, colors, and imagery across all slides
  • Using presentation templates can help with maintaining the same look and feel

8. Less is more

We explored the less is more concept earlier in the article by suggesting you keep to one idea per slide. The same can be applied to text.

When it comes to creating slides for your next keynote, the cardinal sin is a slide with ample text that is verbatim of your spoken presentation.

What this does is encourage people to keep their eyes on your slides instead of listening to you.

Weyenberg also points out that a text-heavy slide forces the brain to multitask between focusing on what it’s reading and hearing – which is quite difficult and will compromise your presentation.

bad presentation example

9. Consider topic transitions

While you want to make your slides look like a cohesive unit, you want to also keep in mind that making every slide look the same may be boring. Weyenberg suggests to:

  • Create one style for the slides that are the “meat” of the message
  • Then create another style for the slides that are transitioning between topics

For example, if your overall slides have a dark background with light text, you can use transitional slides that have a light background with dark text. This way, they’ll still feel like they’re from the same presentation family without being completely uniform.

10. Tell a captivating story

It is fitting that our final tip comes from likely the greatest keynote presenter of all time. The late and great Steve Jobs had the ability to captivate and inspire his audience with his talks, and that’s because he was a very good storyteller. And that’s the golden leaf that you can take from Jobs’ book today.

Always aim to tell a captivating story.

One example is perhaps when he introduced the iPod: “In 2001, we introduced the first iPod. It didn’t just change the way we all listen to music. It changed the entire music industry.” Listen to Steve Jobs weave a story about the digital music revolution when unveiling the iPod.

Bonus Round: Tips From Piktochart Designers

keynote slide templates

  • Always remember that your audience is sitting far away . So ensure that your title font size is large enough to be seen from a distance, and that your body text is no smaller than 20px.
  • Use only two colors for your entire presentation – a primary and secondary color. If you must use a large color palette, your maximum choice should be up to five colors.
  • Make sure that there is enough white space throughout your presentation . This will give your content room to breathe. Less is definitely more in this case.
  • Emphasize only one object per slide – whether it’s an image, statistic, quote. This will make sure your audience stays focused.

How to convert powerpoint presentations to keynote.

Want to open a PowerPoint presentation in Keynote? Apple's made it easy for you!

If someone sends you a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, but you’d rather use Apple’s presentation software, Keynote, you're in luck! Apple's done all the hard work for you. Here's how to convert a PowerPoint presentation to Keynote.

Apple created Keynote knowing that nearly everyone using it would be coming from PowerPoint. This is no surprise, as PowerPoint has 16 years on Keynote and basically owned the presentation software market before Keynote came along.

Related: How to Convert Google Slides to PowerPoint

Knowing this, Apple made it incredibly simple to move from PowerPoint to Keynote by allowing you to open PPTX files directly in Keynote.

To do so, just open Keynote on your Mac, and then click "File" in the taskbar.

In the drop-down menu, click "Open."

In Finder, navigate to the PowerPoint presentation you want to open, select it, and then click "Open."

The PowerPoint file will open in Keynote, with some caveats. Unless you’re unusually lucky, you’ll likely see a warning appear. In our example, the source files for some fonts Keynote doesn’t support are missing. We click "Show" to get more information.

A dialog box appears that will allow you to resolve any issue(s).

In our example, the fonts that have a Warning icon next to them need to be replaced. We click the arrows to the right of each font to select a replacement.

When you’re satisfied with your selections, click "Replace Fonts."

Note that this could change some formatting within the presentation, so it’s best to give it a quick once-over after you replace any fonts.

To convert a PPTX file to a KEY file, save it, click "File" in the taskbar, and then click "Save."

Give your presentation a name, choose where you want to save it, and then click "Save."

Your PPTX file is now a KEY file.

Only Google can make cool AI features look boring

The best AI features are buried under the most boring and technical I/O keynote presentation ever

Google Gemini Pro's new token count

The Google I/O 2024 keynote is over, and if you're interested in new ways Google can inject AI into its products, you probably think you want to see it if you missed it. Really, you don't.

The cool new features and products are there. The problem is they are buried under the most boring and technical I/O keynote presentation ever. Unless you're a developer who uses Google products and the Google ecosystem, it just wasn't for you.

Normally, I would be the first to point out that Google I/O is a developer conference that is meant for developers to learn about development. This is true, and if you fit this description, you should find a way to experience it at least once. On that front, Google I/O is amazing.

But this was the keynote presentation. The part of the week that is supposed to get the "average Joe and Jane" excited about the future so that they want to use the cool new products developers can make using all the new stuff.

Combine that with the fact that a large number of people attending are there as press or influencers, and it makes the whole thing look really weird this time. Members of the tech press are there to tell you about cool new phones and how Google is making things better, not explain the differences between Gemini 7b and Gemini 2b.

If you slogged through it, you did see some cool, even futuristic stuff. Privacy concerns aside, Google can now integrate into your life in ways it couldn't before and even be useful. An example is Google's Project Astra remembering where a pair of glasses were sitting. The days of a lost remote control are over once this goes live.

For every good example, though, we heard a word salad of things that "normal" people just don't care about. Telling developers about multimodal inputs or that they have access to two million tokens is fine. Telling everyone about it is silly because almost nobody cares, or most might not even understand what it means.

Sundar Pichai on stage at Google I/O 2024

Regular people, and probably shareholders, too, aren't interested in how the fudge is made. We only care about the results, whether they are useful enhancements, new products, or new revenue streams for Google itself. In my past life, I spent way too much time trying to get computers and cameras to recognize the things they were seeing, and having this level of tech would have been amazing. But even I stopped being interested about 20 minutes into the program.

The show started right, with Pichai telling people how Google has spent billions of dollars and over 10 years working on AI and its infrastructure. Google is competing with companies like OpenAI and should remind us that Google has a huge advantage when it comes to experience and scale. It's how Google will "win" the AI race once all the dust settles.

It also ended right. Knowing about how Google is managing the risks that come with AI and what its principles are . That's more important than the products themselves and Google has to lead by example because it is about to dump AI on everyone who uses Google Search.

AI count of 121 at Google I/O 2024

Everything in between was developer-focused. I know I know, developer conference, but the keynote is also supposed to get everyone excited about what's coming. Google helped create this situation where a developer conference has morphed into a press event. Abandoning the idea seems short-sighted.

That isn't going to happen, and you're going to have to wait to see how any of this stuff matters when it comes to you.

It ran 110 minutes, but Google managed to reference AI a whopping 121 times during Google I/O 2024 (by its own count). CEO Sundar Pichai referenced the figure to wrap up the presentation, cheekily stating that the company was doing the “hard work” of counting for us.

No surprise, of course, that the topic took center stage, but even so, it’s an impressive figure for a presentation that ran roughly 110 minutes, all told.

Gemini and its various iterations stole the spotlight (after preshow warmup act Marc Rebillet was finished with it). Google is incorporating the LLM-based platform into virtually every one of its offerings, including Android, Search and Gmail.

Of course Google used Gemini to count AI mentions during today's AI-filled #GoogleIO . And there was even one more after this. pic.twitter.com/ajL7JYPQVE — TechCrunch (@TechCrunch) May 14, 2024

The tech giant had a hard act to follow, with OpenAI’s last GPT announcement sucking a fair bit of air out of the room at Shoreline Amphitheater a day prior. Apple is also expected to be announcing a deal to incorporate OpenAI’s technology into its own offerings as part of its own developer conference, WWDC, next month.

See for yourself how often AI was mentioned during the keynote.

Password-protect a Keynote presentation on iPad

You can assign a password to a presentation so that only those who know the password can open the presentation. Passwords can consist of almost any combination of numerals, capital or lowercase letters, and special keyboard characters.

A presentation can have only one password. If you change an existing password when you share a presentation with others, the new password replaces the original. If you add a password after you share a presentation, be sure to notify participants.

Important: There’s no way to recover your password if you forget it. Be sure to choose a password you won’t forget, or write the password down in a safe place.

If your iPad has Face ID (the face detection feature) or Touch ID (the fingerprint detection feature), you can use it to open password-protected presentations. For information on setting up Face ID or Touch ID, see the user guide for your device.

Require a password to open a presentation

the Actions Menu button

Note: Adding a password to a presentation encrypts the file.

Change or remove a password

With the presentation open, do one of the following:

A presentation can have only one password, so if you change the password when you share the presentation, that becomes the presentation’s only password.

People you invite to collaborate on a presentation and who have editing permission can add, change, or delete the password.

Open a password-protected presentation with Face ID or Touch ID

Open with Face ID: Tap the presentation (if you see a message asking if you want to allow Keynote to use Face ID, tap OK), then glance at your device.

Open with Touch ID: Tap the presentation, then place your finger on Touch ID.

If you add a password to a presentation, or change an existing password, the password applies only to the version where the password was added or changed and to subsequent versions.

If the presentation is shared, to prevent others from restoring an unprotected version of the presentation or a version with an older password, stop sharing the presentation , add a unique password to it, then share the presentation again.

5 Free Alternatives To Microsoft PowerPoint

M icrosoft PowerPoint has always been the default choice for creating professional meeting briefs or fun little project demonstrations in schools. Its inclusion as a free service for students or working professionals makes it a no-brainer to use. However, for the general public, it can get quite expensive to pay for a subscription just to be able to create simple presentation slides. Although you can subscribe to Microsoft's Office Suite and get more bang for your buck, the pricing still doesn't hit the affordable range for most.

Fortunately, completion has been growing, and a sea of strong contenders offer similar services to PowerPoint. After considering feature sets, here are five of the best free alternatives to Microsoft PowerPoint. At the end of the article, you can find a detailed explanation of why we've chosen the services, alongside useful comparisons that may help you make your decision easier.

When it comes to productivity apps, Zoho makes some of the better ones in the market. Zoho Sheet, for example, is one of the best Microsoft Excel alternatives out there  —  owing to its extensive product catalog, there is a great way to view and edit presentations. The aptly named Zoho Show lets you design and demonstrate professional-looking slides, all without having to download the program.

Zoho takes a minimal approach to most of its services, and its PowerPoint application is no different. You'll find that most menus are contextually aware of what tasks you're currently performing, which helps keep unnecessary tools out of the way and bring the important ones in focus. There is also a huge library of customizable templates you can choose from, making it easier to kickstart your presentation work.

Zoho Show is completely free to use for individuals and offers unlimited cloud storage. No features are locked behind a paywall, and rest assured, you can fully rely on this online presentation-making tool for all your needs, be it for school or work.

Canva is a service that can easily climb up to becoming everyone's favorite once they start using it. While most applaud it for its graphic designing prowess, there are many other things Canva can do that you probably aren't aware of . Among them is the ability to craft beautiful slides for your presentations and projects.

By creating a free account, you can access thousands of templates on Canva. You can filter these by use case—maybe you need one for a professional business briefing or a casual one explaining why your pet dog is the best canine. There is a whole section of ready-to-use templates dedicated to mobile-friendly viewing as well, which is something you don't usually find to be as accessible with other tools.

Like most presentation apps, Canva lets you collaborate with your team members and work across devices seamlessly. The Canva app for mobile also lets you control your slides remotely during your presentation. Some menus also feature AI-featured tools to add one-click enhancements to your slides -- unfortunately, these are locked behind premium subscription tiers. However, for the cent percent of the population, Canva can be used without spending a dime to meet a plethora of creative needs.

Apple takes great pride in developing in-house solutions to meet every user requirement. While most of its products dominate the competition in popularity, the same cannot be said for Keynote , the company's version of Microsoft PowerPoint. The program was first released in 2003 with macOS Big Sur and has largely remained one of those icons you glance over and forget about.

However, recent versions of Keynote have made it a compelling alternative to PowerPoint. Not only is it pre-installed on every Apple device, including your iPhone, but it also works best with the iPad touchscreen. Keynote has a largely clean and professional approach to the built-in templates, but nothing is stopping you from going creative. Animations are one of Keynote's strongest suits, allowing you to create near cinematic-looking presentations with just a few clicks.

While you can still use Apple Keynote through iCloud on Windows devices, this alternative is clearly meant for people surrounded by the walled garden of Apple technology. It makes use of features like AirDrop, Live Photos, and VoiceOver  — all of which are technologies available across Apple devices. Using Apple Keynote is completely free, and the app has easy exporting tools that make working with Microsoft PowerPoint less of a hassle.

WPS Presentation

WPS Office makes some of the best solutions for creating and editing documents on smartphones , but their service offerings extend to Windows, macOS, and even Linux. WPS Presentation is perhaps the closest you'll get to Microsoft PowerPoint in terms of the user interface and how most tools are bundled in familiar locations.

This PowerPoint app offers real-time collaboration where you can invite your team members and work on the same document remotely. Like most collaboration tools, users can leave comments to suggest changes or add information for other people on the team.

WPS Presentation is not the only free product; you can utilize every app in the WPS Office suite. Unlike most competitors, you don't need to download or use a separate mini-app to make presentations. WPS Office has a document editor, PowerPoint creator, spreadsheet manager, and other tools all within its umbrella. Premium plans for this service exist, but they mostly cater to unlocking features for editing PDFs.

Google Slides

As a netizen, you most likely already have a Google account. Not only is it required to make any meaningful use of your Android phone, but popular services that we take for granted, like Gmail and Drive, all fall under Google's umbrella. One such free service that the tech giant has at its disposal is Google Slides . While the barebones UI might seem lackluster at first, Slides has nearly the same level of functionality as Microsoft PowerPoint and can even be supercharged by add-ons.

All of Google's workspace apps, such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides, provide an intuitive way to work in a team. You can add comments, use annotations, and share the presentation with limited access to others. You can use one of the many predesigned Google Slides templates for simple presentations , or browse for templates that cater to specific needs. Being part of a bigger service catalog has its obvious advantages, such as seamless integration with Google Meet, Gmail, and other products from Google that you already use.

We recommend Google Slides to anyone who needs to create and edit PowerPoint presentations on the go and can't be bothered with working in a complicated environment. The service is also available as an app for Android and iOS, and you can export your presentations in a wide range of formats, including PPT, PDF, or PNG for individual slides.

To Pay Or Not To Pay?

You'll notice that all the services we've mentioned on this list are free to use. In fact, you can use Office 365 apps online for free   — including PowerPoint, which makes purchasing a standalone subscription to the Microsoft PowerPoint app quite redundant. However, nearly every free alternative here short of Keynote also offers premium plans, but should you consider buying one?

For the vast majority of people who are looking for a robust software to create, edit, and share presentations with  —  these free options deliver exceptionally well in every aspect. Some apps like Google Slides and Apple Keynote let you work in smaller teams with the free tier as well. Apps like WPS Office and Canva tend to lock new and exciting features like AI tools behind a paywall, and while these are nice to have, you definitely can do without them.

If you're looking for a presentation tool for a company with multiple people, you can scale up using any of the alternatives mentioned on this list. Both Google Workspace and Zoho offer reliable and enterprise-level plans you can upgrade to. For everyone else  — enjoy creating and demonstrating your PowerPoint presentations for free.

The Top 4 Google IO Announcements That Weren't Confusing AI

Google IO signage/sculpture outside the Shoreline Ampitheatre on May 14, 2024

On Tuesday, the keynote for 2024's Google IO event at the legendary Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California had a clear, overarching theme. That was Google's investment in all sorts of new AI features for its products. Some of them had clear use cases while bringing other questions to mind, like the Google's new AI that will listen to phone calls and warn you about scams that it detects. (Google swear's it's fully on-device without any security concerns.) The new "Ask Photos" feature in Google Photos for searching and mining information from your photo library looks promising, but the jury will likely be out on if it's any good until it's widely available. But other AI tools felt unneeded, like using video uploads to search, where the demonstration overcomplicated a relatively mundane problem (how to balance the tonearm on a modern vinyl record turntable that had the model number visible on its housing).

Not everything announced during Google IO was about confusing AI features that nobody asked for, though. On Tuesday, Google announced a bunch of new features and guidelines across Google TV, Android Auto, and the classic mobile version of Android. Some looked pretty useful, including various security features designed to help with all kinds of threats, including the physical theft of your phone. Let's take a look at the ones that jumped out the most as the most noteworthy, particularly in light of Tuesday's mind-numbing presentation.

Android 14 is coming to Google TV, complete with picture in picture

Outside of the AI announcements, the biggest new feature announced at Google IO in terms of impacting the day-to-day end user experience arguably comes as part of the news that Android 14 is coming to Google TV. If nothing else, Google says that it's tweaked the smart TV operating system to provide "a snappier, more responsive TV experience," which is needed because the Google TV UI can lag on more underpowered budget sets. With that also comes new accessibility and power saving features, like now being able to wake a Google TV set over your home network, but the sexiest new feature involves how the OS handles multitasking.

As Google's blog post lays out, "qualified Android 14 TV models" now support picture-in-picture mode for multitasking. Though it hasn't been a particularly common feature on new TVs in a long time, a showpiece feature of TVs in the 1990s and early 2000s was TVs that let you watch a windowed, silent version of an alternate input source — a cable box, VCR, DVD player, a second included tuner, etc. — overlaid on top of the show. This took up the whole screen with sound. Bringing the functionality back via Google TV is a tantalizing prospect, one that should no doubt delight sports fans, and should also help make for a smoother experience in switching between streaming apps and background apps like VPNs.

New antitheft features make it harder for phone thieves to see your data

Google also announced  that Android is getting some updates to better protect your data if a thief manages to steal your phone, putting the base Android product more in line with Samsung's anti-theft features for its Galaxy phones . Some of these features are designed to become common knowledge among thieves to deter them from stealing your phone in the first place. If a thief manages to get your device to factory reset, it will still need your device credentials or Google account login to be set up as new, lessening its value for resale on the black market.

In the upcoming Android 15, Google has also added "private space," which lets you use a second PIN on top of your device PIN to secure sensitive apps, like those dealing with health and banking, as well as making it so that disabling "Find My Device," or extended the screen timeout period needs your PIN, password, or biometrics. These new settings also require your biometrics to access "critical Google account and device settings," like changing your PIN or disabling the anti-theft protections.

A Google Play Services update will also make it so that Android 10 devices or newer can detect when your phone has been snatched by a thief and act accordingly after this sudden movement of running, biking, or driving. The same update will also add additional protections if it detects similarly unusual behaviors. That same Google Play Services update, meanwhile, will also add additional secure ways to remote lock your phone if the stress of losing it makes it so you can't remember your password.

Increased live threat protection against malware and scammers on Android

In addition to the new protections against thieves who get physical access to your device, Google also announced that it is adding new protections against software and social engineering-based intrusions. First and foremost, Google Play Protect will be updated so that "[its] on-device AI will analyze additional behavioral signals related to the use of sensitive permissions and interactions with other apps and services." Curiously, the list of brands that will be adopting this feature later in 2024 was missing some notable Android OEMs. Google Pixel, Oppo, Honor, Lenovo (Motorola), OnePlus, Nothing, Transsion, and Sharp were the only ones listed, with no sign of Samsung (the biggest player), Asus, TCL, Nokia, Sony, or ZTE.

Google is also making it so that one-time passwords are now hidden from notifications and requiring additional safeguards when sideloading apps, but the most interesting developments come in Google's efforts to stop scammers. Android will now notify you if your cellular connection is unencrypted and thus prone to interception, as well as if they run afoul of fake cell towers. Google is also extending some of its security tools to developers so that they can have their apps check for screen recorders or other potential intrusions, consult Google Play Protect, and receive warnings of anomalies that are often attack signatures.

These features join Android's new on-device AI detection of common scams in phone calls , which was announced during Tuesday's keynote. Google swears that the AI listening to phone calls cannot extend beyond your device, and if they're telling the truth, it could be a useful feature for those more vulnerable to social engineering.

Android Auto is getting app quality tiers and Angry Birds

Another notable change comes in how Google announced that it is handling apps that are developed for Android Auto going forward. Google is introducing three quality tiers of car apps, similar to how it has tiers for large screen apps: Car differentiated, car optimized, and car ready. Differentiated "represents the best of what's possible in cars" and can adapt to not just driving and parked modes, but also different screen sizes and types. Optimized represents "Most apps available in cars today" and are best represented on the center stack display. Car ready represents apps that don't necessarily have car-specific features but can be enjoyed while the car is parked with a similar experience to that of other Android devices.

Google also announced some notable apps that are being ported over to Android Auto as 2024 goes on. The less-surprising ones are for streaming video services Max and Peacock, as well as the Uber Driver app, which is available now. But there's also a port of legendary mobile game "Angry Birds" coming to what the announcement describes as "select cars with Google built-in." In addition, Google Cast is being added to Android Auto for multimedia apps to be enjoyed in parked mode.

Google I/O 2024 live blog: all the Gemini AI news as it happened

All the news from google's big developer event.

Google I/O

Google 's I/O 2024 keynote presentation by Google CEO Sundar Pichai has now finished, and as predicted the event at Google's HQ at Mountain View, California, mainly focussed on artificial intelligence – especially its Google Gemini AI chatbot.

The focus on Gemini was so great that we got little in the way of other announcements, which we've helpfully rounded up in our guide to the best of Google I/O 2024 . So, only a fleeting mention of the new Android 15 operating system for tablets and smartphones, and nothing about Chromebooks, Google Nest products or the Chrome web browser.

Here are the main takeaways so far from the event. Throughout the rest of the week we’ll be digging into Google’s announcements in more depth, and Phil Berne, our US mobile editor, is at the event for hands-on time with the new and improved Gemini, so keep your eyes peeled for his thoughts.

  • Google is 'reimagining' Android to be all-in on AI – and it looks truly impressive
  • Google reveals new video-generation AI tool, Veo, which it claims is the 'most capable' yet – and even Donald Glover loves it
  • Google I/O showcases new 'Ask Photos' tool, powered by AI – but it honestly scares me a little
  • Google's Project Astra could supercharge the Pixel 9 – and help Google Glass make a comeback
  • No thanks Google, I don’t want an AI yoga bestie

There was also talk about Google’s new video and music generation tools, Gemini integration in Gmail and Workplaces, and chat about a slightly creepy virtual workmate.

Read on below for a blow-by-blow account of the keynote speech.

Managing editor Matt Hanson

Matt has been reviewing computers, phones and tablets for over 15 years, and is a big fan of Google Pixel smartphones, Chromebooks and Nest smart home products, so is looking forward to seeing what Google has in store.

Hello! Welcome to our Google I/O liveblog! I’ll be running this live blog as the hype builds for what Google is going to show today.

As I mention above, we’ll have Phil Berne, our US Phones Editor, on the ground at the event in California (lucky him), while myself and a lot of the TechRadar team will be following along online from the much less sunny climes of New York and London.

Empty auditorium at Google I/O 2023

If you want to watch along with the live stream, which starts at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST (or May 15 at 3am AEST), then check out our guide on how to watch Google I/O 2024 .

A silhouette of a woman holding a smartphone with the Google Gemini logo in the background

So, what’s everyone looking forward to at this year’s I/O event? There is a huge amount of excitement about artificial intelligence, and it seems like Google is going to be doubling down with its AI chatbot Gemini .

We’ll likely hear more about what Gemini can do, as well as how it integrates into Google’s major products, such as the Chrome browser and Pixel smartphones.

Personally, while AI has huge potential, I’ve not really found any of the big AI releases to have fundamentally changed my day-to-day life. So, I’ll be interested to see if Google can change that.

Otherwise, as an owner of an Android smartphone, I’ll be really keen to see what Google has in store with Android 15, which is likely to appear.

Could we see some new Pixel smartphones as well? There’s certainly convincing rumors that the Pixel 9 series will be launched today.

I’ll be interested in seeing what Google does here. I’ve had Pixel phones since the original, and my last handset was the Pixel Pro 7. So, I like Pixels a lot, especially how they come with relatively bloat-free versions of Android.

However, my Pixel Pro 7 sadly got run over (a long story that I don’t fully remember), so I have a new phone - the Samsung Galaxy 24 Ultra . If Google releases a Pixel 9 that surpasses that, I might be a bit upset.

Google Pixel 7 Pro phone

I’d also love to see some cool new Chromebooks. Maybe a showcase on how Chromebook Plus devices can stand out amongst the best Chromebooks on the market.

Chromebook Plus devices are more powerful variants of the humble Chromebook, and offer better specs, screens and build quality, all while keeping prices relatively cheap.

However, for people looking for the best cheap laptops, or laptops for students, for example, a standard Chromebook remains your best option. But, could Google I/O change that?

Google Pixelbook Go

One thing that I would absolutely love to see at Google I/O is a follow-up to one of my favorite laptops of all time: the Pixelbook Go .

The Pixelbook Go was a brilliant Chromebook with superb performance, a lovely screen, long battery life and one of the best keyboards ever included in a laptop.

It was a joy to use, and for a few years it was my go-to laptop for when I needed to work away from my desk.

Sadly, Google has never released a followup to the Pixelbook Go. It seems to have abandoned making its own Chromebooks, which is a real shame. The Pixelbook lineup showed how Chromebooks could be more than just budget laptops with a limited operating system.

Pixelbooks were premium and powerful Chromebooks that could go toe-to-toe with much more expensive premium laptops from the likes of Dell and Apple.

Sounds familiar? Yep, they were essentially Chromebook Plus devices before Chromebook Plus was a thing.

So, today’s Google I/O keynote could be the perfect time to resurrect the Pixelbook. Sadly, I don’t think this will happen - when I’ve spoken to Google in the past it showed little interest in a follow-up to the Pixelbook Go.

But, if Google was to launch a surprise Pixelbook, it would make me very happy indeed.

I’m also a fan of the Pixel Watch . It’s one of the few Wear OS-powered smartwatches that offers excellent features, good performance and an attractive design.

I skipped the Pixel Watch 2 as my OG model still runs fine. However, if there’s a Pixel Watch 3 launch alongside the Pixel 9 family, I’d be very interested to see if this time the generational leap is much larger.

Google Pixe Watch 2 in three colors on a cream background

However, most rumors suggest a Pixel Watch 3 launch will be later on this month. Still, I’d like Google to show off some Wear OS improvements that can make my beloved original Pixel Watch even better.

While Google will likely launch the Pixel 9 series in October, as it has previous generations, a new leak today apparently shows off three models .

The leak suggests that the Google Pixel 9 has a 6.24-inch screen, the Pixel 9 Pro has a 6.34-inch display, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a 6.73-inch screen.

A leaked photo of the Pixel 9 series

The timing of this leak is particularly unfortunate as it’s on the day of I/O 2024, and potential  images of Google’s upcoming flagship phones could overshadow the event.

I certainly got a bit excited and thought this could mean we may get to see new Pixel smartphones today, but on reflection, I think Google will likely hold a dedicated Pixel launch event later this year.

The company will also likely not mention the leaks, though who knows? Maybe the leak, if accurate, forces Google to show a quick preview of the phones early.

Hi. It's Roland Moore-Colyer, Managing Editor of Mobile Computing, taking over the live blog for a bit while Matt Hanson goes to shoot some iPad Air and iPad Pro videos.

So speaking of tablets, I'd love to see Google give the fondle-slate version of Android some love. As it stands, Android isn't really up to par when it comes to offering a large-screend experience so I feel Google has some work to do there.

I doubt we'll hear too much on the tablet front from Google as there's been very little in the way of murrurings about any tablet-centric features coming to Android 15.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra

Then again with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra , I get the feeling Google is content to let other devices makers coax Android onto tablets rather than put too much of the legwork in itself.

On the subject of Android 15, I expect we'll get a much deeper look at what to expect from the mobile operating system. AI will surely play a part, but I'd rather Google intergrated better AI tools into the backend of Android rather than focusing on generative AI stuff.

What do I mean by that? Well I want to be able to ask my phone where I was on a particular drunken night out and have it serve up where I may have wandered off too.

Or just use a combination of natural language processing and learning how I've been using my phone to serve up better answers to various queries. I want an autocorrect that actually gets me, rather than play 'guess what the clumsy typer is trying to write'.

As Matt mentioned earlier, there's scope for Google to tease the Pixel 9 series, as the search giant has got into the habit of teasing its upcoming phones. But from Android 15 we could get an idea of what to expect from the ninth-generation Pixel phones.

Oh and look who's popped up! It's our very own Philip Berne at Google I/O.

Philip Berne at Google I/O 2024

Hello! It's Matt, taking the live blog back after a short break! We are just over an hour out from the Google I/O keynote!

Our US phones editor is on the ground! Here's some pictures he's sent us, using a Pixel 8a.

Google I/O

So, I said that here in London it wouldn't be as sunny as in California... but going from Phil's photos it actually doesn't look much different to what we're currently seeing in the UK.

Google I/O

People are taking their seats! We are now around an hour from the event starting. Exciting!

While we wait, Google has created a new version of its popular Dino game, which you can play using the QR code below.

Google I/O

This new version uses generative AI - which could give us a hint at what Google will be showing off.

Right, almost 30 minutes until the show. If you want a recap of what we expect, head to our Google I/O 2024 hub for everything you need to know before the show itself.

Fun fact: Google's livestream is playing waiting music that's "created using image-to-music generation by our AI models"

Google I/O

Another clue? Using AI-generated art is a very controversial topic right now (and Apple managed to upset quite a few artists with its latest iPad Pro advert ).

Google I/O

There's a guy making some weird noises using Google's generative AI tools. It's... uh... a choice. The crowd don't seem to into it.

Google I/O

"It's too early for this," Phil tells us.

Google I/O

He's now shooting t-shirts into the crowd. Hopefully Phil catches one!

Oooh something is happening! And no, Phil did not manage to get a t-shirt :(

If that was supposed to give us a taste of Gemini's music-creation tools... It wasn't really anything we've not seen/heard before.

Oooh Android Auto hint in the countdown?

Here is Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, talking about Gemini. He's really pushing how revolutionary AI, and especially Gemini, is. More than 1.5 million developers use Gemini, apparently.

Google IO 2024

We are going to see a lot about how Gemini can work with Google's various products (called it!).

Google IO 2024

AI Overviews is going to be available to everyone in the US this week - and other countries 'soon'. What is AI Overviews? Good question...

Google IO 2024

He's now talking about how to find a photo in Google Photos. You can now talk to Gemini and it will be able to cleverly find your car's registration plate, a process that could have taken a lot longer in the past.

Keynote speech at Google i/o 2024

Known as 'Ask Photos', this tool will come later in the summer. Some people may not be comfortable with how much of your data Google is helping itself to, however...

Google IO 2024

Now we are getting some devs talking about tokens and stuff. It's times like this you remember that Google I/O is an event primarily aimed at developers.

Keynote speech at Google i/o 2024

I use Google Photos, and I've used it in the past to find the licence plate of my car, so the demo that Sundar Pichai just showed was of particular interest to me!

If it works as well as the demo suggests, I'll definitely be using it to find photos in my huge library.

Google IO 2024

Now we've gone on to Google Workspace and Gemini. You can ask it to summerize emails from certain contacts (in the demo it's a school).

You can also ask Gemini to give you highlights of meetings in Google Meet. It can then draft replies. Handy. If you and your work are all-in on Google Workplace.

"It's basically Google's version of the Eras Tour with fewer costume changes." #GoogleIO pic.twitter.com/sVeC7LL0C2 May 14, 2024

We are now being told how Gemini can help your kids do homework. Again, impressive, but this is putting a lot of pressure on the accuracy and dependability of Gemini.

Google IO 2024

Getting some more use cases. Shopping for shoes is the first one. If you want to return it, Gemini could find your receipt, fill out a returns form then arrange collection.

Sounds cool but... will it actually work like that?

'Making AI helpful for everyone' - Sundar Pichai.

To be fair, this is what companies really need to do. And it's something I've not yet seen from the likes of OpenAI and Microsoft.

Another reference to 2 million tokens!!! Yey!! I don't know what they mean.

It's a high number though. Big number = good, yeah?

Project Astra announced - a multi-modal AI that can better understand the context of your requests.

This is VERY technical, but we have a video demo of how Astra can identify things you point your phone's camera at.

Google IO 2024

This is impressive - they are asking various questions and the AI is answering in a realistic manner. It can even tell you where you left things, apparently. This would, of course, mean you're constantly filming yourself and your home. I don't think many people will love that.

Google IO

One device they mentioned that could be used are smart glasses. Could this be a hint of a future Google Glass sequel?!

Coming to Google services like Gemini later this year. Phil will be testing it out live at the event, so keep your eyes peeled on our home page and socials for that!

Now we are being told about generative AI music-making tools. Another video showing how you can sample music and create whole new tracks - with AI.

Google IO 2024

Now talking about Veo, a generative video model.

You can prompt for things to create videos - using a tool called VideoFX. This is the kind of stuff that's very interesting, but also something I have quite a few reservations about. Could this replace human artists? That is the worry.

Google IO 2024

Now we have Donald Glover (on video). He says with these tools anyone can be a director - and should be.

I admire Glover a lot, but that is quite a statement...

Now talking about CPUs - Trillium. Will be available for cloud customers in 2024. Also will be offering Nvidia Blackwell GPU capabilities in 2025. That's cool!

Now talking about an AI hypercomputer. Thanks to liquid cooling in its data centers, it can push a huge amount of cloud processing across the world.

Google IO 2024

Now Sundar Pichai is wrapping things up with the Gemini and AI tools. Google search is now "Generative AI at the scale of human creativity," apparently.

Now we are hearing about how Google Search is going to change.

"Google is going to Google that for you" with the power of Gemini.

"Search in the Gemini era." Google is VERY bullish about Gemini, it seems.

By the end of the year, AI Overviews will come to over a billion people in Google Search. So, we should get much smarter Google results, and can handle search terms that use various different questions. It's a much more 'human' way of breaking down questions and explaining results, all based on Google's huge index of websites.

Research that can take hours will be done by Google in a few seconds, apparently. For people like like researching things and finding new things, this might not be that thrilling.

But for boring things, it's pretty cool.

Google IO 2024

You can now get an AI-organized search results page, with Gemini organizing results into useful 'clusters.' Contextual factors are taken into account - for example if you're looking for places to visit when on holiday.

Google IO 2024

Now we're talking about 'Ask with video'.

We're being told about how users can take a video and ask Google a question - and Google will return an AI Overview. So in a demo, we're shown someone recording a video of a vinyl player that's broken and asking Google why it doesn't work.

Google Search, via Gemini, then identified the type of player, saw what could be the issue, and then suggested some fixes.

Google IO 2024

What would have been quite a bit of manual searching in Google (such as trying to find the model of the vinyl player) is now pretty quick and user friendly!

It'll be rolling out to Google Search in the next few weeks. It does look pretty helpful - I often go to YouTube for videos on how to do various DIY things without killing myself/my family, so this could be quite the time saver.

Gemini-powered Side panel in Google Workspace now. Google is excited about this. Powered by Gemini Pro 1.5. We are now looking at Gmail for mobile. Not sure if this will be for every user, or just Workspace users.

Google IO 2024

A card overlay gives you an overview of your emails, and from there you can ask questions in the included text box - all without having to open other apps, search emails, etc.

As someone who struggles to find certain emails when I need information, this could be very useful. I've kind of accepted that Google will be reading my emails anyway.

This 'Summerize' feature will roll out this month - but to people signed up to Labs for testing new services and software.

We are being shown the Side panel and how it uses AI to give you suggestions and information based on what you're doing. It's a lot like Copilot's integration in Windows 11.

Which I have used once, then never again. Hopefully Google makes Gemini and Side panel more useful.

Now talking about 'Virtual AI team mate'. They have an account, name and even personality. So you can then talk to it via instant messaging.

The virtual team mate can then search conversations and gives you answers. The team mate can then be added to chats, email chains and projects, and it will remember it all.

Google IO 2024

This seems both cool, and a little creepy. Especially if you work in an office where people have lost jobs - will virtual team mates be used to fill the gaps? Unsurprisingly, Google doesn't touch on these issues.

We are now being told about the Gemini app - and it'll be the 'most useful AI assistant' that uses the latest Gemini model.

This is what will likely replace Google Assistant at some point. The app is 'natively multi-modal' which means you can type, voice chat, photos and videos to interact with Gemini.

Gemini can respond to your voice later this year, and can see what you're seeing through your smartphone's camera.

Now they are talking about Gems. These are like personas for Gemini that can respond to certain prompts depending on what kind of thing you're looking for (such as a Gem that concentrates on recipes).

We're being shown how Gemini can be personalized and edited to give you the best advice - such as putting together an itinerary for a trip depending on what you like to do, and what kind of times your family get up at (so it doesn't start suggesting events that begin early in the morning if your family like sleeping in).

2 million tokens! Drink!

Seriously, it looks like Gemini is going to be EVERYWHERE for Android users. There's support for over 35 languages as well.

Google IO 2024

Now getting a musical video of how Gemini can make life easier (and generate images of cats playing guitars).

'Android is the best place experience Google AI'

It's a 'once in a generation opportunity to redefine the smartphone'.

Google IO 2024

Circle to Search gets a shoutout. First shown at Samsung's Unpacked event. This feature is one of the ways Android is being revolutionized.

Google IO 2024

Circle to Search can be used to help students find solutions to problems - and shows how those problems are solved, not just giving you the answers.

Later this year it'll be able to solve more complex problems, and it's exclusive to Android devices.

Now we're going into Gemini for Android. It's integrated at system-level, and it'll now be context aware, so it can anticipate what you're going to ask of it.

We're getting a demo on the Pixel 8a.

Gemini app now appears over your open app, so your workflow isn't disruptive. You can then drag things it generates into the app you're using (such as a messaging app).

When watching a video, Gemini will know you're watching, and will anticipate your questions about the video.

Google IO 2024

Now Gemini is shown reading a PDF on Pickle Ball rules, and you can then ask questions, and Gemini will read the PDF, find your answer and give you a clear, easy to understand overview of the content. It will also show you where in the PDF it got the information from.

Google IO 2024

Gemini Nano with Multimodality is coming later this year. Sounds like it'll debut in new Pixel smartphones.

This uses on-device AI that's faster and more secure, and will adapt to how you use your device.

Google IO 2024

We're being shown how this can help accessibility - this is very cool.

Gemini can detect if you get suspicious phone calls that might try to scam you and warn you. It seems it can understand the conversation you're having on your phone. Some people may not be too comfortable with this, though I assume it will be all done on-device so no information is shared with Google.

Still, might feel a bit weird knowing Gemini is listening to your calls...

Google IO 2024

Now the devs in the audience (that's everyone, except Phil) are being told about Gemini APIs, so developers can then create apps that use these AI features.

It's not free, but some prices are quoted and there's applause so I guess that means those are good prices. I am not a dev, so I have no idea.

Google IO 2024

We're now being shown how easy it is to create apps with Gemini AI features. Again, this is all over my head a bit, and mainly targeted at developers, but this should mean that we'll likely get some pretty cool AI apps for Android soon.

Google is still talking about AI. But it's now touching on ethics, which is interesting. Google wants to build AI responsibly by addressing the risks and maximising the potential to help people.

This is all very interesting and it's good to see Google take this so seriously - it's something a lot of us are worried about. We'll be digging into this after the keynote, as there is a lot to take in here.

We've now been introduced to LearnLM, a new family of AI models designed to help out in the classroom. These tools aim to assist teachers with curriculums, lesson plans, and more.

There's also a new pre-made 'Gem' personality called Learning Coach, who provides helpful explanations and even quizzes using Gemini's long context capabilities, which the goal of helping students understand concepts and questions rather than simply giving them the answer.

Google has been working with MIT to create a course that helps teachers and other educators learn how to integrate AI into their workflows and classrooms. A tiny bit dystopian, perhaps, but this is well-intentioned stuff that many overworked schoolteachers could truly benefit from.

Sundar is back on stage, and he's reiterating the ethos of 'making AI helpful for everyone'. He's also used Gemini to count how many times they've mentioned 'AI' in today's keynote - 121 times so far!

It looks like we're wrapping up - Sundar has offered a sincere thanks to all the developers pushing ahead with AI software, and now we're being treated to another classic Google video clip, this time providing a slick summary of everything we've seen today.

'Welcome to the Gemini Era' is the last message we're given. We're truly in it now, folks!
