Walden University NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment – Step-By-Step Guide

This guide will demonstrate how to complete the Walden University  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment  assignment based on general principles of academic writing. Here, we will show you the A, B, Cs of completing an academic paper, irrespective of the instructions. After guiding you through what to do, the guide will leave one or two sample essays at the end to highlight the various sections discussed below.

How to Research and Prepare for  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment

Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Walden University  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment  depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. Once that is done, start going through the instructions one by one to clearly understand what the instructor wants. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.

After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. After gathering sufficient and necessary resources, you are now ready to start drafting your paper.

How to Write the Introduction for  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment

The introduction for the Walden University  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment  is where you tell the instructor what your paper will encompass. In three to four statements, highlight the important points that will form the basis of your paper. Here, you can include statistics to show the importance of the topic you will be discussing. At the end of the introduction, write a clear purpose statement outlining what exactly will be contained in the paper. This statement will start with “The purpose of this paper…” and then proceed to outline the various sections of the instructions.

How to Write the Body for  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment

After the introduction, move into the main part of the  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment   assignment, which is the body. Given that the paper you will be writing is not experimental, the way you organize the headings and subheadings of your paper is critically important. In some cases, you might have to use more subheadings to properly organize the assignment. The organization will depend on the rubric provided. Carefully examine the rubric, as it will contain all the detailed requirements of the assignment. Sometimes, the rubric will have information that the normal instructions lack.

Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Also, follow the given citation format. In most cases, APA 7 is the preferred format for nursing assignments.

How to Write the Conclusion for  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment

After completing the main sections, write the conclusion of your paper. The conclusion is a summary of the main points you made in your paper. However, you need to rewrite the points and not simply copy and paste them. By restating the points from each subheading, you will provide a nuanced overview of the assignment to the reader.

How to Format the References List for  NURS 6003 Part 3 Research Analysis Assignment

The very last part of your paper involves listing the sources used in your paper. These sources should be listed in alphabetical order and double-spaced. Additionally, use a hanging indent for each source that appears in this list. Lastly, only the sources cited within the body of the paper should appear here.

Week 4 | Part 3: Research Analysis

Access to mental health care among Americans in rural areas remains a critical challenge due to several barriers. Reports show that 1 in 25 Americans has a serious mental illness (SMI) in any year (Morales et al., 2021). However, people living in rural parts of the United States are more likely to experience mental illness and encounter serious and distinct access barriers to getting treatment. Three critical obstacles to mental health care for these populations include availability, accessibility and acceptability Graham et al., 2020). In this part of the template, I explore my topic of interest and discuss an identified peer-reviewed article concerning the issue and analyze it. The second step entails a summary of the analysis and the strategies used as well as recommending an appropriate database.

Step 1: Research Analysis

Complete the table below

Weinzimmer, L. G., Dalstrom, M. D., Klein, C. J., Foulger, R., & de Ramirez, S. S. (2021). The relationship between access to mental health counseling and interest in rural telehealth. 45(3), 219–228. https://doi.org/10.1037/rmh0000179

The article presents a core aspect of improving access to mental health services in rural areas; the use of telehealth. The authors demonstrate that mental health providers and governments should invest in telehealth to enhance access to mental health for individuals in rural areas. Professional practice can use the article to demonstrate the importance of investing in broadband and other aspects of technologies that use the Internet to increase access to mental health services in rural settings.

The research uses a large population sample to increase validity of the findings. Focused on few areas of Illinois. The article is relevant to the topic since it shows the rates of access to mental health care. The authors show the importance of access to mental health in rural areas.
The article uses cross-sectional survey that improves credibility since data comes from different participants. The authors carried the survey for a limited time. The article is relevant to the topic as it focuses on determining the level of interest in telehealth for users in rural and urban areas of Illinois. The authors demonstrate that more people would prefer telehealth to increase access to mental health care services.
The article is also recent since it is published within the last five years. The article focuses on an aspect of technology as opposed to looking at different items. The article is relevant since it shows the degree of mental health usage among people in rural areas. The article shows the importance of increasing mental health access in these areas based on the level of interest.

The article demonstrates the critical role of improving access and availability of mental health services in rural areas. The article shows that providers and healthcare organizations can improve access and availability of mental health care in rural areas using telehealth as a growing healthcare technology (Crumb et al., 2019). Therefore, I would recommend this article to help improve mental health accessibility for mental health providers and stakeholders.

Step 2: Summary of Analysis

Analyzing a peer-reviewed article is important to identify care aspects under study in research. My approach to the identification and analysis of peer-reviewed research entailed focusing on critical issues affecting millions of Americans. Again, I ensured that I isolate current articles based on CRAAP model; current, relevant, accurate, authoritative and purposeful.

Finding peer-reviewed research requires one to employ effective strategies. Imperatively, the two strategies that I will use which were effective in this case include employing right words and using Boolean operators. The operators ensure that one gets results based on their search words and terms. Using the right words ensures that only relevant sources come up for analysis (Crumb et al., 2019). The resources that I intend to utilize in future to get peer-reviewed research are databases found in Walden University’s library. The library is a critical resource since it has different nursing and health care databases like CINAHL, PubMed, and Cochrane among others.

Research analysis is an essential part of completing an MSN program. As such, nurse students need to use the opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills as well as analytical abilities. Limited access to healthcare remains a critical challenge to care provision, especially access to mental health in rural areas. The selected article shows that providers and health organizations can leverage telehealth to increase not just the availability but also access to mental health services for populations in rural areas of the United States.

In the course of study, an MSN nurse engages in research to advance knowledge on various health care topics. Reading  peer-reviewed articles is highly recommended, and nurses should understand how to locate relevant articles in libraries and leading health care databases. This section analyzes the research article I selected about a topic of interest for further study. It also explains the summary of the analysis, and the results are shared as detailed below.

Medication errors
Gorgich, E. A. C., Barfroshan, S., Ghoreishi, G., & Yaghoobi, M. (2016). Investigating the causes of medication errors and strategies to prevention of them from nurses and nursing student viewpoint.  ,  (8), 220-227. doi:

Gorgich et al. (2016) hypothesize that one of the major ways to enhance safety is to focus on human resources. The general claim is that medication errors can be reduced if nurse managers solve the human resources problem. Always, professional nurses should prioritize patient safety and embrace the principles of the human caring theory. Workshops, in-service education on medication preparation, and electronic medications have been suggested as reliable ways of resolving the human resource problem, reducing medication errors in turn.

It is a descriptive cross-sectional study, implying that its evidence level is high. It does not elaborate the kind of medications that lead as sources of errors. The research shows how patient safety can be enhanced by reducing medication errors Nurses should have high pharmacological knowledge for them to reduce medication errors. Training them on their areas of deficiency through workshops and in-service training is highly recommended.
Uses a considerable number of participants (327 nursing staff and 62 intern nursing students. It is not free from researchers’ biases It shows how issues at the point of care risks public health and increase health care cost. It is a comprehensive article for a nurse wanting to know more about the medication errors and practice outcomes.
It is current, relevant to what happens in today’s practice, and data has been analyzed statistically. It concentrates on a small region in Iran. It shows the role of nurses in the intervention process. Using the article’s findings can help to improve health outcomes.

Module3 | Section 3: Research Evaluation

I have identified one topic worthy of further research. I have researched, identified, and analyzed one research article on this topic that has been peer-reviewed. The outcomes of these efforts are provided below.

Instructions: Complete Step 1 by identifying and analyzing the selected research article using the table and space below. Complete Step 2 by summarizing the results of your analysis in two to three paragraphs using the designated space.

Step 1: Analyse of the research

Research articles that are peer-reviewed are evaluated by other authors who are experts in the field. The peer-review process ensures the article’s credibility as a form of scientific communication. It aims to encourage authors to meet the accepted high standards of their field and to restrict the dissemination of research data. This ensures that unsupported claims, inadmissible interpretations, and personal opinions are not published without expert review. This assignment requires me to analyze a peer-reviewed article related to my area of interest and describe the methodology I employ to identify and evaluate peer-reviewed research.

Complete the following table

Subject of Intrigue: Lack of Mental Health Education and Stigma Journal Article: Include a complete citation in APA format, along with a link or search details (such as DOI) Lopez, V., Sanchez, K., Killian, M. O., & Eghaneyan, B. H. (2018). Depression screening and education: an examination of Hispanic women’s mental health literacy and stigma. 18(1) BMC public health, 1-8. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-018-5516-4

Professional Application: One or more professional applications of the presented theories/concepts.

Professionally, the concept of mental health illiteracy and stigma can be applied to assess the mental health literacy of patients within the  healthcare setting . Understanding a patient’s level of literacy can improve the quality of care through early detection of symptoms, provision of culturally appropriate education, and encouragement of participation in mental health treatment. Statistical Analysis Matrix Add additional rows if needed Research Strengths Research Weaknesses Research Relevance to Topic of Interest

The study utilized a sufficient sample size and can therefore be generalized to Hispanic women. The absence of a control group in the study raises the possibility of selection bias. The study is pertinent to my area of interest because it investigates the role of patient education level as a predictor of mental health literacy. Utilizing a control group would have diminished the likelihood of bias. The researchers utilized a universal screening instrument, PHQ-9, to screen participants for depression. Participants in the study were exclusively Hispanic women, limiting its applicability to individuals of other ethnicities. The study found that the greater a participant’s knowledge of depression and its symptoms, the less likely they were to experience stigma when seeking mental health care. Mental health literacy can reduce the negative effects of stigma on care-seeking. The study also employed a number of validated instruments to assess  depression stigma , such as the Stigma Concerns About Mental Health Care Measure (SCMHC), the Social Distance Measure (Social Distance), and the Latino Scale for Antidepressant Stigma Measure. The majority of the participants in the study spoke Spanish. Therefore, the study did not investigate differences in mental health literacy and stigma between Spanish- and English-speaking participants. The more a person knows about depression, the more likely they are to interact with a depressed individual who has received treatment. Education level influences mental health literacy. A higher level of education increases mental health literacy. Participants were screened for depression using self-reports, which introduces the possibility of reporting bias. The results of the study supported the hypothesis that disease knowledge is a crucial component of treatment adherence. It is possible to improve mental health literacy by assessing education level and providing culturally sensitive care. The study demonstrates that an early assessment of a patient’s educational level at the point of care can be advantageous because it provides insight into intervention options and reduces barriers associated with mental health treatment.

Since it meets the CARP criteria, I would recommend the article by Lopez et al. (2018) to inform professional practice. Since the article was published three years ago, it is current. There are also functional links. As university professors who instruct mental health and social work, the authors are qualified to write about mental health illiteracy and stigma. In addition, the article was published by BMC Public Health, a journal that focuses on the social determinants of health, the behavioral, environmental, and occupational correlates of health and disease, and the community-level effects of health practices, interventions, and policies. In addition, the article is pertinent because it evaluates the role of patient education level as a predictor of mental health literacy. The target audience for this article is mental health care professionals. Therefore, I would recommend it for professional use. In addition, the authors provide references and sources for the information used, lending credibility to the work. The authors provide factual information with the intent of informing mental health providers on how to reduce stigma associated with mental illness. The authors’ lack of bias makes the article suitable for use as a professional guide.

Step 2: Analysis Summary

Below is a two- to three-paragraph summary that includes the following: • Describe your methodology for  identifying  and analyzing research that has been peer-reviewed. • Specify at least two effective strategies for locating peer-reviewed research that you would employ. • Identify at least one future peer-reviewed research resource you intend to use.

Methodology for Locating and Analyzing Peer-Reviewed Research

When identifying and analyzing a peer-reviewed article, I verify that it meets the following standards: Published in a peer-reviewed journal; Contains an abstract on page one; Includes the headings introduction, literature review, methods, and findings; Contains citations throughout the text and a bibliography at the end; Includes credentials of authors affiliated with a university or research institution (Kulczycki et al., 2019). In addition, I evaluate whether the article’s topic is narrowly focused and thoroughly explored. I determine whether the article contributes new, original research to a specific subfield of the subject. Furthermore, I consider the article’s language. The language and content of peer-reviewed research should be technical and formal, with complex ideas and arguments, an objective tone, and an analytical perspective (Kulczycki et al., 2019). Lastly, I determine if the article has a straightforward appearance with minimal use of color, graphics, and images.

Effective Strategies I’ve Employed to Locate Peer-Reviewed Research

Utilizing the library’s research databases and limiting my search to scholarly, peer-reviewed articles are effective strategies for locating peer-reviewed research (López-Cózar et al., 2019). The databases contain a peer review limiter option that restricts the articles retrieved to only peer-reviewed journals. Using Google Scholar to search for articles by title or author is a second strategy. Google Scholar allows users to search multiple sources from a single location (López-Cózar et al., 2019). In addition, it facilitates the retrieval of articles, books, theses, and abstracts. I intend to use the PubMed database to  retrieve research  that has been peer-reviewed. Journals in PubMed are peer-reviewed and pertinent to my field of study because they cover health, biomedicine, and related fields (Kang et al., 2021). PubMed is also appropriate because it enables searches across multiple NLM literature resources, including PubMed Central (PMC), MEDLINE, and Bookshelf.

Peer review ensures that scientific journals respond to significant research questions and draw accurate conclusions based on expert experiments. If an article satisfies the CARP criteria of currency, authority, relevance/reliability, and purpose, it can be considered suitable for professional practice. My method for analyzing a peer-reviewed article involves examining the publisher, abstract, citations, references, credentials of the authors, topic focus, and appearance. By limiting the search to peer-reviewed articles in the library databases and utilizing Google Scholar, one can locate peer-reviewed articles.

The emergency section of a health facility is one of the most critical areas that address urgent care needs of patients. Despite having staff from different specialties, nurses are the most professionals found in the emergency departments of care facilities. Notably, due to nurse shortage across most health facilities, focus has been made to allow the professionals to work in shifts to balance care services to patients (Svirsko  et al.,  2019). However, scheduling nurses in an emergency department is a daunting task and time-consuming to leadership in a health organization. Being able to balance shift hours in order to achieve sufficient nurse-staffing levels at the emergency department requires the implementation of a mathematical model to satisfy preferences of nurses in this section. The present excerpt delves into how mathematical modeling can be used to improve nurse-scheduling process at the emergency department of care facilities. It also uses a template to provide a comprehensive approach in the identification and analysis of peer-reviewed research required for evidence-based practice.

Using Mathematical Modeling to Improve the Emergency Department Nurse-Scheduling Process
Svirsko, A. C., Norman, B. A., Rausch, D., & Woodring, J. (2019). Using mathematical modeling to improve the emergency department nurse-scheduling process.  ,  (4), 425-432.

Mathematical modeling can be used to satisfy the preference of nurses based on shift hours allocated. The approach uses a self-scheduling process so that nurses can select day or night shifts based on their preferences. However, to ensure that nurses attend all shifts, a cycle of rotation is made weekly so that those nurses scheduled for night shift in one week take day shifts in the following week.

The concept of modeling serves to address time at the emergency department. Implementation of the nursing shift patterns as defined by a mathematical formula decreases the time needed by leadership to reconcile monthly schedule in a health facility. Therefore, sufficient time will be allocated for care at the emergency department and not used to solve conflicts arising due to unbalanced shift hours among nurses.

It is based on detailed analysis of the concept of mathematical modeling and therefore enhances clarity for better understanding.

No randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted on this research which means the article relies on meta-analysis for information. This means data is limited in this research. The topic will help me identify a formula for mathematical modeling that can effectively be used to allocate shifts to nurses throughout the day and for night schedules. Additional studies on how mathematical modeling improved nurse-staffing levels.
Formulation of a mathematical model for scheduling nurse shift hours promotes harmony as it reconciles duty allocation. Study does not clarify specific area where the concepts has been applied to warrant its adoption in emergency departments. Topic is instrumental in identifying methods that nurse leaders can use to increase satisfaction of nurses at the emergency department of a care facility. Further research on how application of mathematical modeling concept in shift scheduling reduces nurse burnout to optimize care at the emergency department.

I would recommend this article for use to inform decision on professional practice at the emergency department of care facilities. This is because the article was published in 2019 and therefore it is relevant for present health practice (Lefebvre et al., 2019). Nonetheless, information present in the material relate with my areas of interest a family nurse practitioner with a specific interest in the emergency care. Notably, findings from the publication provides information to leadership of health organizations on the necessity of scheduling shift days and nights for nurses in ways that guarantee satisfaction for the professionals (Tricco et al., 2018). While this article was intended for emergency department, I would recommend it in all other departments because of its necessity to address shift hours which is always a bone of contention in most care facilities occasioned by shortage of health staff.

Peer-Reviewed Article on Nurse Practitioner Care in a Nursing Home

The peer-reviewed article I will cite is “Effects of a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner on Process and Outcome of Nursing Home Care” (1989).   To find this article, I searched the Am J Public Health Journal library.  When determining the best type of article to use for this post, I referenced the web article “What Types of References are Appropriate?” (S.C. Pan. 2021).  This article includes information on peer-review journals, and determines that these are the best to use. An article in the National Library of Medicine (NLM. 2021) assisted me in understanding what a peer-reviewed article all entails.  The article I found discusses using doctors versus nurse practitioners to care for the elderly in nursing homes.  The main difficulty I found was to find an article that was both relevant to the topic as well as current.  This article is a little dated, however, I did feel that the findings in this peer-reviewed article are still relevant today.  The article discusses an improvement in activities of daily living, nursing and drug therapies.  Also, that the number of admissions to hospitals as well as the days in the nursing home were decreased with the use of a Nurse Practitioner in the nursing home setting.  This journal would be helpful to classmates of mine.  It did appear to have well-written and well-researched nursing topics.  This database will also be helpful to me going forward as I will need to reference more peer-cited information for class.

Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies

I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular.

Directions: In the space below Identify and describe at least three academic resources or strategies that can be applied to the MSN program, and at least three professional resources that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or your specialty in particular. For each, explain how you intend to use these resources, and how they might benefit you academically and professionally. NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Academic Resource/Strategy 1

The first academic resource that may be useful to me as an MSN student are peer-reviewed journals. Examples of these are the OJIN: Online Journal of Issues in Nursing , The Journal for Nurse Practitioners , and the Journal for Holistic Nursing amongst others. As a postgraduate student, I need to have a wide knowledge base and have a grasp of the most current evidence-based practices. Journals are the best resource to provide the latest publications on research touching on these aspects. Also, being expected to conduct research and practice clinical inquiry as a postgraduate student, I will benefit immensely from reading journals. This is because they will train me on how to conduct research and present my research findings (Bond, n.d.).

Academic Resource/Strategy 2

The other academic resource for me as an MSN student are research databases for nursing such as CINAHL, Medline and Cochrane. As a postgraduate student I am expected to write projects and papers for my coursework. In order to accomplish this correctly, I need to have access to authoritative peer-reviewed journal articles. These are only accessible in repositories that are databases specific for storing peer-reviewed published nursing and healthcare articles. For instance, CINAHL is the most expansive nursing database with articles that are in full-text form from a total of 768 journals. Medline has got full-text articles in healthcare, while Cochrane is a combination of six databases in one containing published peer-reviewed healthcare articles (Bond, n.d.) NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.

Academic Resource/Strategy 3

The third is an academic strategy for the MSN student. Studying for the postgraduate master’s in nursing can either be full-time or part-time. It is imperative that the student chooses the most suitable time-frame to suit their needs as an academic strategy. This is because it would be difficult, for instance, for a working registered nurse (RN) to pursue the MSN degree as a full-time student. The reason is that they will be having work commitments that will interfere with full-time learning. The best strategy for such a student would be a choice of part-time learning. Full-time MSN course typically takes 18 months to two years to complete. A part-time program, on the other hand, normally takes about three years (Cynthia et al., 2016).

Professional Resource/Strategy 1

On professional resources, the first one for an MSN student like me would be membership of a professional nursing association like the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Association (ANA). The professional associations provide the platform for postgraduate RNs with MSN to network with colleagues from all over the country and the rest of the world. The nurse is therefore able to acquire new ideas from elsewhere and learn from peers who have been in the profession longer than them. The associations also provide opportunities for leadership, advocacy, and dissemination of results of clinical inquiry (Bestmasterofscienceinnursing.com, n.d.). NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Professional Resource/Strategy 2

The second professional resource are the respective state boards of nursing in each of the fifty states in the United States of America. These boards are concerned with licensure and regulation of nursing practice. They decide the scope of nursing practice in the state and set standards of nursing care to be adhered to by all nurses practicing within the boundaries of the state. All the boards collectively make up the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). It is the NCSBN that gives the National Council Licensure Examinations to RNs or NCLEX-RN. This is a necessity and important requirement before commencing practice (GraduateNursingEDU.org, n.d.).

Professional Resource/Strategy 3

The third professional resource for the MSN student are the various nursing certification organizations. Certification for the postgraduate RN is a mandatory requirement before licensure in any state for practice. Therefore, these organizations are an important professional resource in this regard NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics. An example is the American Nurses Credentialing Centre or ANCC (Wolters Kluwer, 2013).

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES/STRATEGIES

The additional professional resource worth mentioning here are the annual conferences that are organized by professional nursing organizations like the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). These conferences provide opportunities for exchanging ideas and networking (Bond, n.d.). Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below. NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.

Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:

  • Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing
  • Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
  • Cite at least 2 resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.
  • Use Grammarly and SafeAssign to improve the product.
  • Explain how Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity

There is a close and important relationship between writing and academic integrity. According to Tauginienė (2016), integrity is a core value in academia and a leading ethical principle. Integrity in academic writing means using only your ideas freely, but properly crediting other persons when you use their intellectual material, thoughts, and ideas. Nurses pursuing the MSN postgraduate degree write a lot of papers and articles on a myriad of relevant subjects such as physiology, social justice in healthcare, holistic nursing and so on. Doing this without reading the works of others is next to impossible. However, academic integrity expects them to include proper citations of the original authors of the thoughts written in their papers. Not doing so is blatant plagiarism which is unethical and tantamount to academic dishonesty (Marsh, 2018) NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.

It follows that professional practices and scholarly ethics are therefore related. This is because as a student in academia, the student nurse studying for the MSN degree is required to exercise academic integrity during their postgraduate training. Of course, what they do in academia is the same thing that they will incorporate into their practice. For instance, an MSN nurse student who practices academic dishonesty or plagiarism during the program will most likely be dishonest too in their practice after graduation and licensure. This is a very dangerous situation as the nurse is a professional who deals with human life. Dishonesty and unethical behavior in any form may thus lead to the loss of life. This is reinforced by the fact that the nurse-patient relationship as we know it is a fiduciary relationship (the patient places trust on the nurse by allowing her to take care of them and know their medical history). In any case, good nursing practice can only be ethical nursing practice (Grace, 2018).

Several tools are available, luckily, for MSN nursing students and other students to maintain academic integrity. When used properly, these tools are able to rule out the presence of any form of academic cheating in student papers. As is known in the professions and the world of academia, plagiarism as an act has got very serious professional and academic ramifications. To avoid it, therefore, MSN students should include in their academic papers proper citations of sources consulted, paraphrase keenly and adequately, make use of quotations where necessary, utilize a plagiarism checker, and as much as possible use their own ideas (Calonia, 2019). One of the tools that can help maintain academic integrity is Grammarly NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics. The application comes with an in-buit plagiarism checker that can be very helpful for the MSN nursing student in the detection of plagiarism in her papers before submission (Calonia, 2019). And even though Grammarly is primarily concerned with checking for grammatical mistakes in a piece of student and professional writing, it can also be helpful in properly citing sources in the student’s paper. The other assistive tool for academic integrity is the ability to properly paraphrase other people’s ideas in your own paper followed by proper citation of the source. To paraphrase is to rewrite another person’s information or ideas without altering the meaning of their original work (Calonia, 2019). Lastly but not least, the other tool for helping with academic integrity is Safe Assign. This software compares a submitted student paper to a large repository of previous student papers to detect similarities, hence plagiarism or academic dishonesty. NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Expand on your thoughts from Part 1 by:

  • Identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your 1) academic work while a student of the MSN program, and 2) professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional. NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.

In the discussion so far, it is abundantly clear that the advanced practice nurse must devise strategies to both pursue and maintain academic and professional integrity and ethics. This she must do both as a student and later on as a qualified practitioner taking care of trusting patients and treating their illnesses. In doing this, the MSN nurse student must not forget that the profession of nursing is based on trust; and this relationship must ge guarded at all times. Luckily, nurses have not been known to portray dishonesty in a general sense. As a matter of fact, nurses have been rated top in terms of professional integrity and honesty by a Gallup survey that was conducted recently (Aureus Medical Group, 2020). If an MSN nurse were to practice academic dishonesty while they are still a student, they will have been wired to take shortcuts and will therefore in all probability also be dishonest nursing professionals. The prospects of such a nurse handling treatments and prescriptions to patients on a daily basis are unfathomable. Take for instance the matter of scheduled controlled medications NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics. An MSN nurse who had been used to academic dishonesty as a student would gladly lie about the details of an addicted patient and restock their medications without proper indication. The net effect is a compromised healthcare system with professionals who are harming patients instead of helping them to recover. Such a nurse of course also violates the bioethical principle of nonmaleficence or not causing harm to the patient.

As a student nurse, therefore, some of the strategies that can be useful in maintaining integrity and ethics are to always be original and to religiously check written academic papers for possible plagiarism before submission. As a qualified professional, strategies include never lying to patients by not doing what you say. The other is playing teamwork with colleagues who can point out mistakes (Aureus Medical Group, 2020) NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.
