Ubc theses and dissertations, assessing the role of urban forests for outdoor forestry education : a case study coupland, kathleen --> -->.

Post-secondary forestry education is facing the impacts of urbanization resulting in a reduction in access to high-value outdoor educational locations. Research that merges urban forestry, forestry teaching objectives and educational approaches is lacking. The presented work aims to narrow this gap using an exploratory approach. To determine the amount, area, and value of urban forests available for immediate use for forestry education without the costs and logistical burdens associated with off-campus trips, a case study evaluation of forest types, walkability, and forestry learning objectives on hyper-local scales was carried out, using high resolution LiDAR data. Forest learning objectives were able to be linked with urban forest types, and local areas with educational potential were identified. High-resolution point cloud data was then used in conjunction with historical aerial photos to examine forest cover change over time at scales unavailable from satellite data. The combination of two data sources allowed for the analysis of how changing locations on campus and university development can impact access to outdoor education locations. The methods successfully combined data types in a novel way increasing the ability to use high resolution remotely sensed data to monitor changes over longtime scales. It was found that shifts in teaching locations on a university campus can cause changes in access to outdoor education locations, highlighting cross campus differences in access. Questionnaires and interviews involving students, graduates and instructors provided in-depth understanding of the value, impacts, challenges and necessity of and for outdoor learning experiences in the education of forest professionals. Independently analyzing student and instructor perspectives of outdoor education allowed for targeted recommendations to maximize the positive impacts to students while minimizing instructor concerns. Participants recognized the value of outdoor education in post-secondary degree programs and generally ranked urban forests as less value than their rural counterparts. Despite the lower valuation of urban forests, participants agreed there was value in increasing their utilization to increase outdoor learning.

Master of Science in Forestry Program

Our Master of Science in Forestry program requires students to successfully complete a thesis within the field of forestry and to select a minor. We emphasize the resources of North Carolina and the southern United States, but candidates may also explore forestry problems throughout North America or choose an area of study that leverages our expertise in tropical pine species and other international arenas. This degree program is the preferred track for students who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or who anticipate conducting or reviewing research in their future work.

The Master of Science in Forestry degree requires students to develop and conduct a research project, then present their methodologies and results as a thesis. A minimum of 30 credits, following all rules of the NC State Graduate School , are required, along with the FOR 601 (Seminar) and FOR 603 (Research Methods in Forestry and Environmental Resources) courses. Students may focus on their thesis topics on a broad range of basic scientific inquiry and applied management issues, including:

  • Forest genetics and tree breeding
  • Propagation of commercial trees species
  • Forest nurseries, nursery soils and regeneration
  • Biotechnology and gene transfer in commercial forest species
  • All facets of forest management and operations
  • Forest economics and policy
  • Forest nutrition
  • International forestry
  • Restoration ecology
  • Silviculture
  • Hydrology and watershed ecology
  • Browse past theses and dissertations from the NC State Library

Students must also declare a minor as part of the MS-Forestry program . A minor consists of at least nine graduate credits approved by the student’s advisory committee and faculty member. Courses must be taken during the degree program and all must be within an established NC State curriculum or among appropriate departments to satisfy a logical interdisciplinary minor.

Comparative analysis on role of fruit tree-based agroforestry and monoculture in addressing climate change challenges in sofi district, harari regional state, ethiopia.

Abstract: The effects of climate change have hit the agriculture sector in Africa hard. Making adjustments to adapt to the changing environment is critical for countries like Ethiopia, whose primary source of income is subsistence agriculture, which is heavily reliant on rainfall. As a result, establishing context-specific adaptation approaches is crucial for reducing the adverse effects of climate change. This study was conducted at Sofi district, Harari Regional State, Ethiopia, to compare...

Morphometric and molecular characterisation of Iroko gall bug Phytolyma species (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) from eastern and western Nigeria

Abstract: Iroko gall bug, Phytolyma species is a major pest of Milicia excelsa which has hindered the establishment of Milicia plantations in many West African countries. To date, the genus Phytolyma consists of Phytolyma lata (Scot), Phytolyma fusca (Walker) Phytolyma minuta (Hollis) and Phytolyma tuberculata (Alibert). In Nigeria, there is no clear record of the Phytolyma spp found in the country. This has become a major concern due to irregularities in researchers’ report of species pre...

Studies on seed conservation and Propagation of the Neem Tree (Azdirachta indica a juss) in Sudan

Abstract: Neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss ) is a multipurpose tree widely planted in Sudan. Recently the tree has been singled as a high priority species for natural pesticide this gives it an economic importance. Fresh seeds germinate readily if sown directly after collection but they lose their viability very quickly (4-12 weeks). This study was conducted at the National Tree Seed Centre, Soba-Sudan (June-December 1995) and University of Gezira farm (Dec.94 -Jan.1996). The main objec...

The Importance of Forest to Mankind

A forest is a large area of land covered with trees and bushes. It can also be defined as an area of land with high density of trees or a large expense of land covered with trees and a home for wild animals. All forests are either natural or artificial. The natural forest exists on their own while the artificial ones are established and managed by man. Forests cover about 30 percent of the earth’s surface and contain about 3 trillion trees. They exist in dry, wet, freezing cold, and scorchi...
