After a long week of studying or working, everyone is ready to relax or spend time with friends and family.

Weekends are when we try to do all the things we don’t have time for during the week, including just doing nothing.

Whether we plan to run errands or kick back ( relax ) in front of the TV, we all look forward to the weekend.

For many, these pandemic years have been one long never-ending weekend. What day is it? has become a common refrain ( repeated phrase ).

Whatever your situation, I hope you have found ways to fill your time and connect with loved ones. I hope 2022 brings you health and happiness.

What are you up to (this weekend)?

Because people love weekends, asking about someone’s weekend is a very common form of small talk.

If you are talking with a friend, the same question could lead to a longer discussion.

However, sometimes, it might just be a quick conversation like this one:

A: Do you have plans for the weekend?

B: Not yet. What about you?

A: I’m planning to just take it easy. I might hang out with some friends on Sunday.

B: Cool. Well, have fun whatever you end up doing / decide to do .

A: Thanks, you too.

Because people look forward to the weekend, they often start talking about it as early as Wednesday.

It is common to ask about someone’s weekend plans with these two questions:

What are your plans for the weekend? or What are you doing this weekend?

A Note on Pronunciation

What are your sounds like Whaduhyer and What are you sounds like Whaddaya . These are very common reductions in spoken English.

Additionally, doing sounds like doin ‘ with the strong – ing sound dropped. This sound pattern is very common with – ing words.

A Common Mistake to Avoid

When talking about weekend plans, it is not common to ask “What will you do this weekend?”

While everyone will understand you, will is not used to talk about future plans or intentions.

More Ways to Ask about Someone’s Weekend:

Do you have plans for the weekend?
Any plans for the weekend?”
What are you going to do this weekend?
What’s going on this weekend?
Are you doing anything over the weekend?
Are you doing anything special this weekend?

What’s going on this weekend? means What’s happening this weekend? When we ask this, we are usually asking if there is a special event, like a concert or party. If we are not attending an event, we would answer by saying, Not much, Nothing, or Nothing much. These responses are the same as the ones we use to respond to What greetings .

A Note about Grammar:

When talking about a future plan that was planned before the moment of speaking, using will is incorrect. Instead, we use be + planning to (or other present continuous verbs) or going to .

So, if you have a plan to see a movie, you might say:

I’m planning to go to a movie.
I’m going to a movie.
I’m going to go see a movie.
I’m going to see a movie.
I’m going to go to a movie.

What Not to Say

What if you don’t have any plans?

What if your plan is to stay home all weekend and sleep? What if you plan to get drunk? When asked about their weekend plans, my students often say “Sleep” and “Drink alcohol.”

However, unless you are talking to a very close friend, you should avoid saying sleep and drink alcohol when someone asks you about your weekend. These are not natural answers in English. They do not give people a good impression.

Instead of telling people that you plan to sleep or drink on the weekend, you can say:

I’m planning to (just) take it easy.
(I’ll) probably just relax. (note: will is okay here because it is not a definite plan)
(I’ll) probably just stay home. (You can also add “I’m not sure.” before “probably” in all 3)
(I’ll) probably just hang out at home.
I might grab a drink with some friends.

What’s worse than a weekend that disappears instantly in a mess of exhaustion and chores? But it happens so often. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to work on improving your weekends!

You deserve time to rest and recharge, enjoy family and friend time, work on hobbies and pet projects. The perfect weekend involves doing these things AND being able to start the new week feeling refreshed and organised. You can totally do both.

Before we start, I’ll admit that a perfect weekend probably doesn’t exist. Not in any one format anyway. It’s different for everyone.

BUT you can work on making your weekends close to perfect for YOU. Here are some ideas to help you create your perfect weekend – whatever that looks like.

Does the Perfect Weekend Exist?

There’s a LOT of pressure on weekends. The weekend is your precious time off, time to yourself, time with family and friends, time to run errands, socialise, relax, work out, chill out, sort out the house, get out the house, and all the rest… No wonder weekends can be just exhausting.

The other pressure on weekends is that we often find ourselves feeling guilty about slowing down and thinking about how we SHOULD be doing this or that. We then end up feeling disappointed when we don’t “have a great weekend” and end up with the Sunday night blues .

It’s true that no one bounces into work on Monday morning excited about how they had such an average weekend. But we don’t beat ourselves up about having a really mediocre Tuesday evening, so why does the weekend need to be so perfect? Time to let go of all that pressure. A weekend is two days to spend how you please. No more or less . Being mindful of this can play a big part in how much you enjoy your weekend.

In reality, the “perfect weekend” is going to be one which leaves you feeling both relaxed and energised. So how can you achieve that?

Let go of the pressure to do more, enjoy more, achieve more.

What Would Be Your Perfect Weekend?

What your perfect weekend looks like will depend on lots of different factors. Your lifestyle, family situation, work patterns, and personality type will all influence what constitutes a perfect weekend for you. My ideal weekend when I was single in my 20s looked a lot different to how it looks now years later with kids to look after. (Yes, I still want to spend it sipping cocktails somewhere beautiful, but these days there would a lot more naps involved.)

Your perfect weekend will also change depending on what’s going on in your life right now. Before the pandemic, many of us were desperate for a quiet weekend at home. After a year of staying home, we were desperate for a weekend away. Needs change with the ebb and flow of life.

The Perfect Weekend Challenge

This weekend, challenge yourself to forget all thoughts of what you should be doing, or where you should be going, and create the perfect weekend according to what you need most right now. Start be asking yourself a few questions:

What would make me feel happy?
What would make me feel relaxed?
What would make me feel energised?
What do I need more or less of right now?

This should help you to focus on what an ideal weekend would like for you THIS weekend.

Perfect Weekend Ideas

Sometimes you don’t need to ask yourself what kind of weekend you want. Sometimes you just know exactly what you want to get out of a weekend, and what would make it perfect. These weekends tend to fall into some of these categories:

The Relaxing Weekend

The secret to a relaxing weekend is to leave everything else at the door – including all those thoughts about what you should be doing instead.

Forget about the niggling DIY jobs or other things on your to-do list that can wait. If it’s urgent, get it done beforehand and then go all-in and commit to a weekend of complete downtime. Watch all the TV you want, have an at-home spa day, order takeaway, enjoy the Perfect Sunday Morning . No guilt allowed.

The Social Weekend

Some of the most memorable weekends are the busiest. Sometimes you need to have a jam-packed weekend seeing friends and family, where you end up exhausted on Sunday night, but good-exhausted.

The Getting-Stuff-Done Weekend

Occasionally, the best Monday morning vibes come from knowing that you were really productive over the weekend and used it to sort out all the little life admin tasks that had been hanging over you. If you don’t have any weekend plans, take the time to sort out your paperwork, spring clean your house , batch cook for the freezer, or any other jobs that you never get round to doing in the week. You’ll cruise into Monday feeling like you’re winning.

The Working-on-a-Project Weekend

On a similar theme, if you have a project you want to complete, like redecorating a room, clearing out the garage, selling all your 1990s collector beanie babies on eBay (can it be done? asking for a friend…) then pick a weekend and get it done. It’s going to feel so good to get it finished.

The Getting Away Weekend

Ah, that weekend away feeling. Heading off on Friday, full of excitement, to somewhere new. If you haven’t had a weekend away since the COVID Beforetimes, then you’re not alone. Get dreaming. Start planning that next weekend away for when restrictions are lifted.

The Unplugged Weekend

Sometimes you want or need to shut out the world and have some proper quiet time (and not see anyone else’s Insta-perfect weekend). Sometimes you should do exactly that. Have a weekend where you only use your phone for essential calls and do Literally Anything Else. Read a book, go for a long walk, do a craft, watch old movies, have a games night, go on a family adventure. Be present. Old-skool weekends feel so good.

The Perfectly-Balanced Weekend

This is probably most people’s idea of the ideal weekend. It’s the one where we manage to fit in something relaxing , something social , and something productive , which is probably the holy trinity of weekend activities. Sounds obvious, but in truth not many weekends actually turn out like that. It might take a bit of planning, but it’s totally do-able. After lunch, we went for a drive around town. It was so much fun that we really loved the day. On returning home, we were tired. We had tea and went to sleep early.

The weekend went by fast, and I had lots of fun. I look forward to the next weekend for more fun and relaxation.

How to talk about the weekend in English

Everyone loves the weekend. Weekends are a huge topic of conversation. Starting on Wednesday or Thursday, people will ask you about your weekend plans. When you return to work or school, you'll be asked how your weekend went. So it's helpful to have a nice range of phrases to use for these conversations.

The upcoming weekend

If you want to ask someone about the upcoming weekend in English, here are some common questions:

What are you doing this weekend?

Do you have anything going on this weekend?

Do you have any big plans for the weekend?

Do you have anything planned for this weekend?

If you have plans, you can tell people about them:

I'm driving to Baltimore with a friend.

I've got a date lined up.

Francine and I are taking the kids to the zoo.

If you don't have any plans, here are some good phrases:

I don't have anything planned.

I'll probably just stay at home and relax.

I just want to sleep in!

Of course, you might not want to know about other people's weekend plans. In that case, just wish them a happy weekend:

Learn to Speak Fluent English – Making Weekend Plans

Weekends are exhilarating, but weekdays are tiring. People eagerly anticipate spending their weekends with family or friends. However, planning a great weekend is difficult since it takes a lot of debate among friends when selecting what to do and where to go. There are a lot of back-and-forth conversations about it, and it sometimes ends in a sad cancellation. In any case, we chat a lot during this process, so take advantage of it by learning to speak fluent English and practicing it on a daily basis. Language fluency increases your confidence and allows you to talk more efficiently, impressing people in the process. It may also inspire people in your family or circle of acquaintances to learn English and speak it fluently.

John: I have an examination due on Monday and hence I need to start preparing for it today onwards. And these types of examinations are not easy to pass. I really need to invest some time with it. Justin: Oh dear, but the academic year has ended. So, which examination are you talking about? John: I had enrolled myself to an online course early this academic year and I almost forgot about its examination date. Justin: Now, this is all messed up. John: I’m extremely sorry Justin. I suggest you all should visit the beach this Sunday. Whenever we schedule another trip I shall surely come along. Justin: There’s no need to be sorry John. I totally understand your situation. But the examination is even more important, isn’t it? We can always postpone our trip, right? John: Yes, without me it won’t be fun either… ha ha ha Justin: Ha ha ha, I suggest you attend your examination after which we shall schedule our trip. John: Sure. Thanks for understanding, dude. Teaching Speaking: Planning a weekend trip

This lesson focuses on speaking skills and making suggestions . There are language tasks and activities for your students, a focus on pronunciation, a main speaking task and extension activities.

Lesson Plan

Introduction.

Last year over 800,000 tourists to the UK went to watch a football match as part of their visit. In this lesson, learners will discuss options for a weekend trip to the UK, talking about likes and dislikes and discuss an itinerary. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to make suggestions, talk about likes and dislikes, find out about different UK cities and make a plan for a weekend trip. Learners will use a range of listening, speaking and reading skills.

B1 / B2 (intermediate to upper intermediate)

Teenagers and adults, 80 - 90 minutes.

This lesson is flexible and can be used over two different classes or one 90-minute class. You can also extend or shorten some of the steps depending on the level and needs of your students.

Introduce the theme of the lesson to the learners:

Eating local food
Going shopping
Going sightseeing
Relaxing by a pool or at the beach
Doing some sport or activities
Watching a concert or going to the theatre
Going to a football match
Going to an art gallery or museum

2. Listening for gist

Explain to students that going to see that many tourists go to see football matches as part of their trip to the UK. A Premier League travel agency wants suggestions for things that these people could do in addition to watching a match. First, they are going to listen to (or read a dialogue) of two people planning a weekend trip to Manchester.

Students can listen to see which activities from the lead-in are mentioned. Alternatively, give the students the tapescript and they can do this as a reading activity. Give feedback and see if there are any activities that weren't mentioned.

Answers : Eating local food, going shopping, going sightseeing, going to an art gallery or a museum, going to a football match.

3. Listening for detail

Go through the sentences in Activity 1 on the worksheet. Ask students to listen (or read) again, this time listening for who mentions each activity. Tell students to write K for Kerry, J for John, or N if it is not mentioned.

Answers : Going to a local pub - K Getting up early - J Practising English - N Going to independent shops - K Going to a football museum - K Going to see some paintings - N Visiting a famous building - K Doing a cooking class - N Staying out late - J

4. Focus on Language (Guided Discovery)

Tell students to look at Activity 2 on the worksheet . In pairs, they should underline the phrases in the transcript for making suggestions, saying what you like and saying what you don't like and complete the table. Check the answers.

Making suggestions Shall we ...? We should ... Sounds like your kind of thing. I could ... Maybe ... Why don't we ... Let's ...

Saying what you like I'd like to ... I'd definitely like to ... I wouldn't mind that at all. I'd be up for ...

Saying what you don't like I'm not that into ... I think I'd prefer ...

Ask students if they can add any other phrases to each category and get feedback.

5. Focus on Pronunciation

Write up the following sentences from the transcript on the board:

Do you think we should get up early to make the most of the day? Why don't we check out some of the nightlife? I wouldn't mind that at all. What do you think about the football museum? What do you think? Do you think we should go for a curry?

Practice drilling these and ask students to underline the stressed words in each sentence. Ask them to identify which words in English carry stress (verbs and nouns and words that carry meaning).

Draw attention to how the 'do you' questions are pronounced in connected speech. Drill the /dʒə/ sound and ask students to practice the phrase 'do you think' as /dʒə'θɪŋk / and repeat the sentences.

6. Controlled Practice

Students will now practice using the phrases for talking about likes and dislikes. Write two activities on the board, and in pairs, students have to explain which one they prefer and why. Give students a minute to talk about it, then ask for feedback. Encourage them to use the phrases from Activity 3 and say why they like one activity more - for e.g. I'd prefer to watch a football match because I'm not that into playing. I prefer to be in the crowd. Then erase the activities and write up the next two. Choose any activities that you think are relevant to your students. Below are some suggestions:

Would you prefer to ...

Watch a football match or play a football match?
Go out for dinner or cook at home?
Watch a horror film or watch a comedy?
Meet a famous sports person or meet a famous singer?
Go on holiday in your own country, or go abroad?
Eat some cake or eat some chips?

The task is to plan a weekend in one of four UK cities. Do you know the closest city to this iconic UK sculpture?

7. Main Task (Planning a weekend trip)

Write 'Itinerary ' on the board. Explain what the word means (a plan for a trip; including the places you want to visit). Ask students to imagine that they are working for a Premier League Travel agency and they want to organise a weekend itinerary to a UK city. They will have to take the trip themselves first and plan an itinerary together and agree on what they would like to do.

Put students in pairs and assign each pair one Fact File (from the worksheet) . Give students time to read the information about their city, and answer any questions about vocabulary. If you have internet access in class, you can give students extra time to take a look at the web pages and find out more about their city. If they do this, set a time limit (10 - 15 minutes) and ask them to make notes.

Tell students to look back at the table from Activity 2. Remind them to use this language as they are planning their itinerary. They should agree on at least five activities that they want to do over the weekend.

Monitor and at the end of the task give feedback on language use.

8. Extension / Homework

After feedback, you could put students into new pairs and give them a different Fact File, so that they can repeat the activity for a different city. At the end of the task, ask students which city they would be most interested in visiting and why.

Another alternative is to ask students to present their itinerary to the rest of the class or to another pair/group. Ask the students listening to make notes as they listen. At the end, each student can vote on which weekend itinerary they like the best.

A weekend trip to Brighton may involve some sunbathing on the beach, a walk on the pier and a spin on the big wheel!

We all usually long for the weekend, especially when engaged in tiresome activities during the week. One can choose to go swimming either at a public swimming pool or the beach. Swimming is a fun activity to do over the weekend. It not only relaxes our minds but also shapes our bodies into healthy and fit people. It is fun when you are accompanied by friends. It is usually fun to play water games such as water volleyball and basketball.

Camping is another fun activity one can do over the weekend. Together with your friends and family, you can go camping in a forest, away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. At the camp, some of the best things to do are such as fishing and engaging in team-building exercises. Team building activities in most cases usually have a moral lesson behind them. Therefore, in the process of having fun, you are also learning life virtues.

For party lovers, the weekend is usually the best time to have fun in clubs, restaurants, and pubs. This, however, should be done responsibly since at such times is when most people get into trouble with the law and other revelers likewise.

Last but not least, one can decide to spend time at the arcade to play games such as Pacman, Galaga, space invaders, pong, and Donkey Kong games. In addition to these, one can play paintball together with friends and family as well as go-kart racing.

Weekend is something I really look forward too. From the other busy five days of school, I really get rest and relax on weekends.

On Friday mornings I am so happy because I would have to get up early only for this one day and then sleep to my wish on weekends. Moreover, as a family we all could spent some time on weekends.

Last weekend was great for me. Saturday morning, after breakfast, my Mom announced that we would be visiting my aunt’s place for lunch. Hurray!! I was happy. So I did my homework’s very fast and completed them.

My mother was busy preparing some food items and I helped her by looking after my little sister and playing with her. By afternoon, we took our baths and got ready to leave to my aunt’s house. After lunch, we fell asleep. By evening, we had our tea and went for a drive in the city. It was so much of fun, that we really enjoyed the day. Getting back home, we were tired and slept of early.

On Sunday morning, we went to the church and attended the masses. After church we came back home and then had our breakfasts. After clearing the dishes, I studied for some time and then relaxed watching my favorite cartoon shows.

After lunch, we all rested for some time and in the evening after tea and snack, my parents, me and my little sister went to a nearby park. We played for some time there and then took rest. Then we had a walk around the park and enjoyed the evening breeze. When it got dark, we came back home. After taking showers, we had our dinner and then after our evening prayers, we kids went to slept.

The weekend passed off with loads of fun and entertainment and I look forward to the next weekend for more fun and entertainment and to relax myself from the daily homework’s and studies.

How to Write a Perfect Essay Plan

Every good essay starts with a good essay plan. And planning your essay is important, as it will help you express each point you need to make clearly and in a logical order. But what goes into a good essay plan? And how can you write one? Join us for a quick look at how this works.

1. Read the Question Closely

The first step in any essay plan is to look at the question you’ve been set. It should provide some clue as to the kind of essay required, such as whether it is an open or closed question . These differ as follows:

An open question permits various answers. For instance, if you were set an English literature essay, you might be asked What are the main social themes in the writing of Charles Dickens? This would allow you to discuss a range of concepts in response. Writing you essay plan would then involve narrowing down your subject matter so you can focus on one issue.
A closed question focuses on a specific issue, often asking you to agree or disagree with something. For instance, a closed question could be Is technology a destructive force in the writing of Charles Dickens? In this case, the question dictates the form of the essay, as you would need to look at arguments for and against the claim and, finally, come to a conclusion.

Keep in mind that both question types require an in-depth answer! Some closed questions could technically be answered by writing ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on a piece of paper, but this won’t get you great marks. Instead, think of the question as a prompt for you to show off what you know on the topic.

And if you’re not sure about anything, such as how a question is worded, you will want to check this with whomever set the assignment.

2. Brainstorm Ideas and Organise Your Research

After studying the essay question, the next step is to brainstorm ideas for answering it. And the starting point for this is to organise your research.

In other words, it’s time to get out those lecture notes! In fact, you should make a mind map of everything you know on the essay topic.

3. Draft an Essay Outline

The last step in writing an essay plan is to outline your essay. This means breaking it down section by section, paragraph by paragraph, so you know exactly what you need to write to answer the essay question.

The exact content will depend on the topic and word count . But, as a rule, most essays will have a basic structure along the following lines:

Introduction – A paragraph or two that sets out your main argument.
Main Body – This is the main chunk of your essay. To plan this, break down your argument into paragraphs or sections, sticking to one main idea per paragraph. Once you’ve done this, note down how each point supports your argument, plus any quotes or examples you will use.
Conclusion – A brief summary of your arguments and evidence.
References – A list of sources you plan to use in your essay.

This will then guide the writing process, making sure you always stay on topic.

In the last letter, i wrote something about a possible trip, well i did and it was amazing, i traveled to colombia because of carnival in Cartagena de Indias of this city, you know that i have a friend in Colombia so i visit him and stay at his home.

im going to other places in this country and I fell in love with the beaches, Colombia is a paradise, no matter the problems of the country, the people are very friendly. the best food of this place is the Paisa tray that has a mixture of flavors with ground meat, pork rinds, avocado, sauce, egg, beans, rice, a small arepa, and frequently, 2 or 3 types of sausages. Today I’m going to the Archipelago of San Andrés to know the landscapes that captivate between mangrove forests, palm trees, coral reefs and sea grasslands that surround white sand beaches, considered among the most beautiful in America.

Vania and I arrived in Korea with safety. The travel was tired and so boring but we could rest in the hotel. Now we are ready to enjoy this adventure! What is the conversation 2 friends making plans about?

Laurie and Christie are both friends and are having a conversation about what to do at the weekend. They plan to go to the movies have something to eat and then go shopping.

A conversation between 2 friends

Laurie: So, what are your plans for this weekend?

Christie: I don’t know. Do you want to get together or something?

Sarah: How about going to see a movie? Cinemax 26 on Carson Boulevard is showing Enchanted .

Laurie : That sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should go out to eat beforehand.

Sarah: It is fine with me. Where do you want to meet?

Christie: Let’s meet at Summer Pizza House. I have not gone there for a long time.

Laurie: Good idea again. I heard they just came up with a new pizza. It should be good because Summer Pizza House always has the best pizza in town.

Sarah : When should we meet?

Christie: Well, the movie is shown at 2:00PM, 4:00PM, 6:00PM and 8:00PM.

Laurie: Why don’t we go to the 2:00PM show? We can meet at Summer Pizza House at noon. That will give us plenty of time to enjoy our pizza.

Sarah: My cousin Karen is in town. Can I bring her along? I hate to leave her home alone.

Christie: Karen is in town? Yes, bring her along. Laurie, you remember Karen? We met her at Sara’s high school graduation party two years ago.

Laurie: I do not quite remember her. What does she look like?

Sarah: She has blond hair, she is kind of slender, and she is about your height.

Laurie: She wears eyeglasses, right?

Sarah: Yes, and she was playing the piano off and on during the party.

Laurie: I remember her now. Yes, do bring her along Sara. She is such a nice person, and funny too.

Sarah: She will be happy to meet both of you again.

Christie: What is she doing these days?

Sarah: She graduated last June, and she will start her teaching career next week when the new school term begins.

Laurie: What grade is she going to teach?

Sarah: She will teach kindergarten. She loves working with kids, and she always has such a good rapport with them.

Christie: Kindergarten? She must be a very patient person. I always think kindergarten is the most difficult class to teach. Most of the kids have never been to school, and they have never been away from mommy for long.

Sarah: I think Karen will do fine. She knows how to handle young children.

Laurie: I think the first few weeks will be tough. However, once the routine is set, it should not be too difficult to teach kindergarten.

Christie: You are right. The kids might even look forward to going to school since they have so many friends to play with.

Sarah: There are so many new things for them to do at school too. They do a lot of crafts in kindergarten. I am always amazed by the things kindergarten teachers do.

Laurie: Yes, I have seen my niece come home with so many neat stuff.

Christie: Maybe we can ask Karen to show us some of the things that we can do for this Halloween.

Laurie: Maybe we can stop by the craft store after the movie. What do you think, Sara?

Sarah: I will talk to her. I think she will like that. It will help her with school projects when Halloween comes.

Christie: Michael’s is a good store for crafts. It always carries a variety of things, and you can find almost anything there.

Laurie: There is a Michaels store not far away from Cinemax 26. I believe it is just around the corner, on Pioneer Avenue. We can even walk over there.

Sarah: So, we plan to meet for pizza at noon, go to the movies at two, and shop at Michael’s afterward. Right?

This weekend ESL lesson plan provides activities, worksheets, and digital materials for intermediate B1 students. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to describe a variety of weekend activities and learn some tips on how to have both an enjoyable and productive weekend. They will also be able to describe their weekend and what they did using the past simple tense.

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

In the first part of this ESL lesson plan about weekends, students watch a short video of an introverted young woman spending her weekend alone . In the video, the woman’s colleague asks her how her weekend was. Then, it shows her lying in bed, watching Netflix, and ignoring phone calls from others all weekend. She describes this type of weekend as “great”. Students react to this video, and use some adjectives to describe it. Students proceed to think and talk about the most recent weekend. They share what they did and use adjectives to describe it.

In the next part of the preview, students think about and discuss their weekends. They discuss their preferences, such as whether they prefer to be lazy or productive, or to sleep in or wake up early. There is a third part in which students match some phrases to images . Some of these images include people running errands, doing chores, and setting alarms. They talk about which of these activities they do on the weekends.

VIEWING ACTIVITY

In this part of the lesson, students watch a video of a young woman, Rachel, talking about how she spent her weekend . She gives some tips on how you can have an enjoyable and productive weekend. In the video, you can see her doing activities with her partner, Dan. Some of her activities include doing chores, waking up early, and going to the gym for a workout.

In the activities, students match the 5 tips Rachel recommends for a productive and enjoyable weekend. These tips include having a digital detox and making a to-do list. In the second part, students answer some questions about the video.

DISCUSSION & GRAMMAR

In the viewing follow-up phase, students discuss some questions. For example, they discuss how similar or different their typical weekend is to Rachel's.

The next two parts of this section focus on the past simple tense . Students write both questions and answers in the past simple about Rachel's weekend. They use some verbs according to the context. One example is:

Question : When did Rachel get up?

Answer : Rachel got up between 6 and 7 AM.

In the third part, students complete a dialogue using past simple verbs. Some of these verbs are in the irregular form. Students also get to practice asking questions in the past simple in this dialogue.

LIVING FOR THE WEEKEND: PLANNING & CHATTING

In this communicative activation "Living for the Weekend: Planning & Chatting," students get to either plan their upcoming weekend or reflect on past ones. In Option A, students write down 5-7 activities they're either obliged to do or excited about, like chores, hanging out with friends, or going to an event. Then, they take turns pretending it's Monday morning, chatting about each otherss weekend using the past simple. Students keep the chat going for a bit. In Option B, students think about and discuss memorable weekends and share what they're looking forward to for the upcoming one. This activation is all about chatting, sharing, and getting into that weekend vibe!

I want to pick up my favourite novels and read them in a warm cosy corner of my room over the weekend. Reading is one of my favourite hobbies and it is very sad that I do not get to read much on weekdays because of my workload. So, I really look forward to reading as much as I can on weekends.

This week I plan to read a few detective novels, and a volume of poetry as well. I also intend to go jogging on the weekend. It is very important to exercise to stay fit and healthy, and jogging is my favourite exercise! I also have plans to go out with my friends to a new restaurant that has recently opened up in our town.

And although I hate to work on the weekends, I must catch up on some work for the next week as well. Do tell me about what you plan to do on your weekend as well!

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57. Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000. 

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

Expect more crowded roads and airports over the long holiday weekend. Will your getaway cost more than it did last year? It depends on how you plan to get there.

More drivers will hit the road this Memorial Day Weekend compared to last year, say experts.

W ith the three-day Memorial Day weekend just a week away, travelers can expect roads and airports to be more crowded than last year. But will your getaway cost more than it did last year? It depends on how you plan to get there.

What to expect if traveling by air

Domestic air tickets for Memorial Day weekend are averaging $260 per ticket, down 9.5% from last year and 2019 levels, according to Hopper’s Memorial Day 2024 Travel Outlook .

Hopper is predicting that airports will be busier over this Memorial Day, with more than a million more seats departing from U.S. airports over the long weekend. That’s unsurprising, as for many months now, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been reporting air passenger volume that surpasses pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Some of the problems that have plagued air travel in recent years have not yet been fully resolved, including a shortage of 3,000 air traffic controllers and delivery delays from Boeing.

To lower the risk of a flight disruption, Hopper advises booking the earliest flight in the day. “In general, flights departing after 9 am are twice as likely to be delayed than departures scheduled between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m.,” according to Hayley Berg, Hopper’s chief economist.

Passengers whose flights are disrupted can consult the Department of Transportation’s Aviation Consumer Protection website , which shows side-by-side comparisons of what each airline offers in the event of a controllable delay or cancellation.

What to expect if traveling by car

Driving a gasoline-powered car will cost more this year. The average price of regular gas is currently $3.60 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). That’s up 13% from last year, when a gallon of regular cost $3.53 at the pump.

But there’s a workaround if you’re location flexible. Gas prices can vary wildly from state to state, and even within areas of the same state. Consider that a gallon of regular costs just $3.07 in Mississippi, which is 70% less than the $5.24 per gallon average in California, per AAA data. That means a weekend road trip through the Deep South or Midwest can cost significantly less than a drive up the Pacific Highway.

Car rentals are averaging $43 per day, in line with last year, according to Hopper. Americans are renting cars for longer than last year, with most rentals averaging five days compared to four days in 2023.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) is expecting 38.4 million Americans to drive 50 miles or more from home for the long weekend — 1.5 million more than in 2023. That’s a 4% increase in travel volume for the holiday weekend compared to last year, according to the organization’s annual travel forecast released Monday.

What to expect at your destination

Travelers will see slightly higher on-the-ground costs this year when they arrive at their destination. Hotel stays over the holiday weekend are averaging $212 per night this year, slightly higher than average prices for summer, says Hopper.

Eating out on vacation will also cost a bit more than last year. The Consumer Price Index for Food Away from Home increased 4.1% between April 2023 and April 2024, the slowest year-over-year rate of growth for menu prices since May 2021, according to the latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics .
