Morning Walk Routine

My morning walk routine is an essential part of my daily routine. It sets the tone for my day and helps me to feel energised, focused, and ready to tackle whatever the day may bring. I start by setting my alarm for 6:00 am, which gives me enough time to wake up and get ready before heading out. I make sure to lay out my walking clothes the night before so that I can quickly get dressed and go. Once I'm dressed, I grab my water bottle and head out. I usually like to take a different route each day to keep things interesting, but I always make sure to choose a route that is safe, easy to navigate, and offers a variety of scenery.

As I start walking, I like to take deep breaths and focus on the present moment. I pay attention to the sensation of my feet hitting the ground, the sound of birds singing, and the feeling of the cool morning air on my skin. This helps me to clear my mind and feel more present. I also like to listen to music or podcasts while walking. It keeps me engaged and entertained.

Throughout my walk, I make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly. I also like to take a few minutes to stretch when I feel tightness in my muscles. By the time I get back home, I feel energised and ready to start my day. I take a quick shower and then sit down to enjoy a healthy breakfast. I find that starting the day with a morning walk helps me to feel more focused and productive throughout the day. I highly recommend it as a daily habit to anyone looking to improve their overall well-being. The habit of morning walking is a simple but really effective practice that can have a significant impact on the well-being of an individual.

A Moring Walk

“Early جلدto bed and early to rise اٹھناmakes a man healthyصحت مند, wealthy and wise”.

I am an early riser. Last Friday, I woke up early in the morning with the first crow of the cock. I made up my mind to go for a walk. I went to a friend’s house and knocked on his door. I invited him to accompany me. He agreed and we started at 4 A.M. The streets looked deserted. People were still sleeping in their beds. A few old people met us on the way. They were going to mosques. We also said our Fajr prayers. After sit, we were soon out of the city. Some carts loaded with fruits and vegetables are coming to the city.  A cool breeze was blowing. Birds were chirping. The scene was charming. We were cheerful. After some time, we reached the bank of the canal. We saw a fewچند people taking exerciseورزش there. Morning Walk

There is an old proverb that says ‘Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man health, wealthy and wise. I am in the habit of getting up early in the morning and have formed the habit of taking long morning walks in the past two years. It is a light exercise and best for physical fitness. The morning air which is fresh and pure is beneficial for the lungs. The early rays of the rising sun are good for healthy skin. ‘ Health is Wealth’ and Doctors also recommend morning walk to their patients for gaining sound  health and freshness of energy.

At a distance of about one kilometer from my house there is a big park. Along with my neighborhood friend I cover the distance. We jog in winters and walk easily in summers. On the way we meet other people , whom we know by now heading towards the park. We exchange greetings and move on. It is very rare that we two friends miss our morning walk.

During winters mostly the people stay indoors but during summers young and old alike are seen enjoying the beautiful weather. The dew drops on the leaves, grasses and flower petals shine like little pearls. There is the refreshing cool breeze blowing the sweet smell of the flowering plants. The birds chirruping in groups are seen all around. It is almost the same scene daily and same people dew meet in the  park but the charm of early morning is everlasting.

We run on the circular path of the park. After two –complete rounds we let ourselves fall on the wet grass and roll happily on the softness below.

Few little children are seen playing with balls. Only the old and the aged are seen sitting in a group. They all know each other well. They prefer to sit quietly and discuss matters on politics, the changing times and their younger generations. Fat people walk briskly in a bid to reduce extra fats.

As we lay down to rest we watch the sun in the sky. The sight of the rising sun and the quick change of colour is captivating.

The morning walks keeps me fresh and energetic the whole day. A regular morning walk is necessary for maintaining a sound body and mind.

‘ God made the country and man made the town’

There are no two opinions about the fact that a morning walk is a boon for health. No diet or tonic is as effective as the morning walk. One has to pay nothing for it. It is the lightest exercise. It is useful to all person of all age groups. It refreshes exercise. It is useful to all persons of all age groups. It refreshes our mid. It keeps us fit.

I take walk every morning with my friend Raju. Raju is my class- mate and  next door neighbor. We walk along the road. This lonely road leads out of the town.

Yesterday  we started at 5 a.m. As we went out a cool morning breeze welcomed us. We passed though some fields of wheat. The spreading fields presented a beautiful scene. the chirping of the birds created a lively sensation in our hearts.

Some farmers were ploughing  their fields at a distance. We passed through a small village where we saw village young women going to draw water. They were we  singing sweet folk songs. We enjoyed these songs very much. We felt some thrill which words worth must have felt on hearing the song of the Solitary Reaper.

The golden ball of sun appeared in the East. The horizon was shining with a golden light. With folded  hands we stood for a few minutes to pay our respect to the Sun- God. Bright rays or light made th scenery more attractive and pleasing.

We walked and walked till we reached the stream. It flows near out town. We sat on its bank and took rest for some time. We saw a garden nearby. We walked into it.

There were grassy plots. We walked bare – footed on this grass. We enjoyed the fragrance of the beautiful flowers growing on a large number of plants.

As it was about seven in the morning, we walked back towards our homes. We had covered a  distance of four kilometers from our homes. Now we hastened back and reached home at 8 a.m.

When I returned home from my walk I found the nature changed. All the sights and sounds had a wonderful effects on my body and mind. My mind became fresh and active. The fatigue which was caused by learning my lessons seemed to be gone. I felt that I had energy enough to do my work with ease.

Essay No. 04

A morning walk is one of the cheapest, easiest and best means of keeping good health. It is very rightly said:

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

I get up early in the morning and go out for a walk. The sun has still not risen when I go towards the fields.

There is a garden on the way. Mostly, the sun is rising at that time. I enjoy the loving beauty of the sun rise when everything seems to be bathed in golden light of the sun.

As I enter the garden, I’m welcomed by a gush of cool, soothing breeze laden with sweet fragrance of flowers.

There is a rustling of leaves of trees overhead. Birds are chirping and singing sweet songs at that hour of the day.

I have the sight of flowers of multifarious colours. A good number of butterflies of different colours and designs are often hovering round the flowers. Sometimes, I also see bees gathering honey from flowers as they move from one flower to the other.

I have a race in the circular graveled path in the garden. Then I take some exercise in a corner of the garden.

Thereafter, I move towards the fields. There I look at various kinds of crops and vegetable plants. I like the sight of shining dewdrops hanging on the blades of grass.

There is a canal at some distance from the garden. There I have a bath. As I prepare for returning home, the sun has attained some height in the sky. The milkmen can be seen carrying milk cans to villages and towns. The shepherds can be seen coming to the open grassy places to graze the cattle. I return home refreshed and happy.

Essay No. 05

A morning walk in the most exhilarating and rejuvenating experience any one can have. It is a complete exercise, together with the inhaling of a huge stock of clean oxygen from the morning unadulterated air. Together with this, during the morning walk, a person sees nature in its exquisite form without any pollution from man’s handiwork. Thus, a morning walk can be defined as one of the finest jobs done by man in his daily routines.

This is the walk we must all take when the previous night is about to give charge to the new day, and the sun has not yet taken charge of the day from the night. The aura is calm and quiet, freshness complete, and the air absolutely clean and fresh. The oxygen inhaled at this time serves as a reservoir the consumption by the body throughout the day A morning walk is considered as the best mode of exercise especially for those above the age of forty, and for those who have a sedentary job. This is because those with sedentary jobs get no exercise at all, and only this much is what they can vouch for. It is also the only time that they can get out of their daily schedules for a programme of exercises. Besides, a walk gives exercise to the whole body it invigorates the blood vessels, energises the entire system, thus making the body ready to face the daylong strife and turmoil. The atmosphere is as quiet as quiet can be, the air is as fresh as fresh can be and the individual is all set for the day. With this lovely combination of sorts, a morning walk can be safely recommended as, one of the best known exercises for most people. It clearly provides all the energy and freshness required as fuel for the day. Thus, I am personally of the view that all people irrespective of age must take this exercise as seriously and as meticulously as possible. It brings good health, a good waking mood and sets the ball rolling for the bouts of the day

During a morning walk the scene we normally come across is very interesting. People of all ages, all complexions, and all jobs are seen together at one single platform- the walking track. There are the young jogging their way the old walking, some slowly, others briskly, children running all over. Oh! the sight is a treat to the eyes. Moreover, the number of people out of their homes so early in the morning gives the satisfaction to onlookers where they realise that, it means people are really getting health conscious.

All people young and old, a request to you all – make morning walk a part of your daily schedule, and all else that is good and healthy will follow in its trail.

Baseball playoffs: Richardson Pearce mounts comeback, Rockwall advances with walk-off

Richardson Pearce’s “team of grinders” is looking more like a team of destiny.

Staring at playoff elimination, Pearce mounted another of its patented comebacks to defeat Arlington Martin 8-7 in Game 3 of a Class 6A Region I quarterfinal best-of-3 series Saturday afternoon at Dallas Baptist University’s Horner Ballpark.

“Whatever we need, if it’s a big hit or a key defensive play, our guys get it done,’’ said Pearce coach Justin Roland. “This team never says quit.’’

Degan Kubat pitched the final four innings to nail down his second victory of the day. He worked two innings in a 4-3 Game 2 victory earlier in the afternoon when Pearce rallied with four runs in the final inning.

“We’re a big rally team and it just takes one play to turn it around,’’ Kubat said.

Pearce (27-16) in its six playoff wins has come from behind in five, three times in the final inning and twice when down to its last strike.

The entire season has been a comeback for Pearce after a 1-9 start to its deepest playoff run in 30 years. “It was rough early but we got it figured out,’’ said Kubat.

Martin (24-14) led 3-0 need two outs to finish off Game 2 and was up 6-4 after four innings in Game 3. The Warriors scored a run in the seventh and had the bases loaded when shortstop Vince Villegas fielded a grounder and stepped on second base for the final out.

Pearce advances to a regional semifinal against Boswell (29-6) which swept Midland Legacy by scores of 2-1 and 6-4 in a regional quarterfinal series.

The Game 3 lead see-sawed until Pearce broke it open with a four-spot in the fifth inning. Villegas, Nathan Berry and Nathan Kinder had RBI singles and a Martin throwing error allowed another run to cross.

An errant throw on Luke Nohinek’s sacrifice bunt allowed two Martin baserunners to score in the fourth inning and an RBI single by Logan Baresh extended the Warriors’ lead to 6-4.

Sophomore Nash Hornberger’s RBI single in the bottom of the third regained the lead for Pearce but Martin escaped bigger damage on a line-drive double play.

Doubles to the gap in left-center by Baresh and Romel Garcia highlighted Martin’s three-run third inning that made it 3-3.

With the momentum carrying over from the Game 2 comeback, Pearce opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 3. With two on and two out, Levi Rozenblum’s fly ball was lost in the sun and fell for a triple. Villegas made it 3-0 with an RBI single.

Pearce, scoreless in the previous 13 innings of the series, exploded for four runs in the seventh inning for the Game 2 victory.

Tyler Sessions tied the score with a two-run single and with two out Rozenblum plated the go-ahead run with a base hit to left field.

The rally began with one out when Carson Bailey’s infield fly was lost in the sun and fell for a hit. A walk and Sam Kinder’s bunt single-loaded the bases. Natanael Melendez drove in the first run with a base hit.

Nohinek laced a two-run double in the fifth inning for Martin and starting pitcher Bryson Bentley worked five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.

Forney 4, Lufkin 3: Dylan Clark’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in one run and lifted Forney past Lufkin in Game 3 of its best-of-3 Class 5A regional quarterfinal series. Relief pitcher Seth Hubbard gave up two hits and no runs over the last 1 ⅓ innings.

Forney, which beat Lufkin 4-1 on Thursday and fell to Lufkin 1-0 on Friday, last advanced to the regional semifinals in 2022.

Argyle 5, Aledo 0: Argyle will appear in the regional semifinals for the fourth consecutive year after completing a sweep of Aledo on Saturday in Game 2 of the best-of-3 Class 5A regional quarterfinal series. Argyle beat Aledo 2-0 on Friday. This was Argyle’s third straight sweep of the playoffs.

Starting pitcher John Gailey allowed three hits and no runs in the shutout win, finishing with two walks and five strikeouts after six innings on the mound. Colton Roquemore went 2-for-4 at bat with an RBI, while Brayden Rosckes led Argyle with two runs driven in. Argyle was the Class 5A state runner-up in 2023 and looks to make it back to the state tournament this year.

Rockwall 5, Waco Midway 4: With the game tied at four in the bottom of the eighth inning, Dylan Cheek’s walk drove in one run and lifted Rockwall to a come-from-behind, walk-off victory in Game 3 of its best-of-3 Class 6A regional quarterfinal series against Midway. After beating Midway 3-0 in Game 1 on Friday, Rockwall fell to Midway 6-3 in Game 2 earlier on Saturday.

Lovejoy 3, Hallsville 0: Lovejoy got the 2-1 series win over Hallsville by way of a no-hitter from pitcher Asher Lacy . The Leopards got some run support from Oklahoma baseball commit Kyle Branch who blasted a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In Game 3, Rockwall entered the bottom of the seventh inning down 4-1 when Landon Locke singled to drive in runs from Pearson Riebock and Charles Mahaffey. Rockwall tied the game shortly after when Jake Overstreet doubled to set up a run from Locke. Relief pitcher Brandon Hutchings pitched the last 4 ⅓ innings, allowing two hits and a run, while walking one and striking out three.

With the win over Midway, Rockwall advances to the regional semifinals for the fourth time since 2021.

The cars that wait in endless lines on crowded Moscow streets recall the people who used to wait in endless lines...

Moscow’s terrible traffic has been infamous for a while now, but in the past year it has come to feel like an existential threat. The first snowfall of last winter, in early December, paralyzed the city. Andrey Kolesnikov, the Kremlin correspondent for Kommersant and probably the best-known print journalist in the country, was unable to reach the airport in time to leave with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin for Nizhny Tagil. Instead of detailing Putin’s manly adventures in the metallurgical capital of the Urals, Kolesnikov’s column the next day described his own epic, failed journey to the airport. The traffic-analysis center at Yandex, the country’s leading online search engine, reported a record-breaking worst-possible rating of 10 for six straight hours. That night, a popular anti-Kremlin blogger, making his way along the river in the center of town, encountered an ambulance driver standing outside his vehicle throwing snowballs lazily off the embankment; he’d been in traffic so long, he explained, that his patient was now dead.

Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who takes everything that happens in the city very personally, perhaps because over the years he and his wife have come personally to own a good chunk of the city, reacted decisively: he blamed the meteorologists. They had underestimated the snowfall. If they didn’t start forecasting better, there would be trouble. In the following months, though, snow wreaked havoc on the city whenever it fell. In three separate instances, drivers of snow-clearing vehicles were shot at when they collided with other vehicles; one of the drivers, shot by an off-duty police officer, died. Even without snow, the movement of cars through the circular maze of Moscow was incredibly frustrating. During rush hour on an overcast, slippery day in late February, the luxury Mercedes of a vice-president of Lukoil, the country’s largest oil company, collided at high speed with a small Citroën. The occupants of the Mercedes escaped with superficial injuries; the Citroën crumpled like a paper bag, and the driver and her daughter-in-law—both doctors—were killed.

The accident exploded into scandal. The police claimed that the Citroën was at fault, but automobile activists quickly found witnesses who said that the Mercedes had crossed over into the central emergency lane reserved for ambulances and police cars, and then into oncoming traffic. Especially infuriating was the Mercedes itself, a black S-500 with a siren: for years, these besirened black Mercedeses had been running red lights, using the emergency lane, and otherwise tyrannizing other drivers. Some of them technically had the right to do all this, since they belonged to one of the federal security agencies in Moscow, or to Duma deputies, or to Putin; but a large number simply belonged to wealthy and well-connected individuals. Now they were killing people. Within days of the accident, the young rapper Noize MC recorded a furious song, “Mercedes S-666,” in which he ventriloquized the innocuous-looking Lukoil vice-president as Satan: “All those satanic costumes, that’s just tomfoolery. / Dressing up like that they’ll never look like me. . . . I’m working here on a whole other level. / I’ve got a suitcase full of cash to get me out of trouble.” The song’s chorus expressed the class conflict at the heart of the matter: “Get out of my way, filthy peasants. / There’s a patrician on the road.”

On a Monday morning a month later, two young women from the Caucasus set off bombs during rush hour in the center of the city. The first blew herself up at Lubyanka, the metro station just beneath the headquarters of the Federal Security Service, and the other did so at a nearby stop, forty minutes later. Emergency services reacted rapidly, and since there could be no question of ambulances making it through traffic from the site of the bombings to the hospital, the badly wounded were helicoptered out. Given the forty-minute gap between the explosions, however, the press began to wonder why the metro hadn’t been evacuated directly after the first bomb. The response from a metro spokesman was immediate. “You have no idea what would have happened if we’d closed down an entire branch of the system,” he said. The city was so crowded, its functioning so tenuous, that it was better to risk another explosion than closing off an artery. “The city is on the brink of transportational collapse,” Mikhail Blinkin, a traffic expert, told me. “Moscow will simply cease to function as a city. You and I will be living in different cities. Some people will live in one neighborhood, and others will live in a different neighborhood, and that will be fine, except they won’t be able to get from one neighborhood to the other.”

I first noticed the extent of the Moscow traffic problem in the spring of 2007, while drinking a coffee at the Coffee Bean, on Sretenka, just up the street from the Lubyanka and around the corner from the Lukoil headquarters. It used to be that you couldn’t get a coffee in Moscow for love or money, so I didn’t mind that it wasn’t good coffee and that it cost four dollars. That is to say, I minded, but what could I do? So there I sat, sipping my four-dollar coffee and looking out the window, when suddenly my sister appeared in front of the coffee shop and stopped, trapped in traffic. She had recently bought a navy-blue Honda Element, which looks like a motorized version of Fred Flintstone’s car, with the driver sitting curiously upright. Farther ahead, Sretenka intersected the giant Garden Ring Road, which runs around the Kremlin at a radius of about a mile and a half and marks the border of the historic city center. For much of its length, it is twelve lanes wide; at certain points, it’s eighteen. Still, it is often clogged. At the Sretenka-Garden Ring intersection, a police officer hand-operates the light to try to ease traffic, to no avail. So there was my sister, just twenty feet away from me, sitting down as I was, almost as if she were at another table. The moment extended in time; I sipped my coffee. When, eventually, the light changed and my sister moved forward a few car lengths, it was as if she had merely moved to another table. If the coffee were cheaper, I would have brought her one.

Several generations, even several centuries, had brought the city to this point. Its early rulers built Moscow as a concentric series of walled forts, with the Kremlin at the center. After the government abandoned Moscow in favor of St. Petersburg, in the early eighteenth century, the old capital developed haphazardly, like an enormous bazaar. In the post-revolutionary age, when the Bolsheviks moved the government back to Moscow to get farther away from the Germans, various fantasies emerged to reverse all this: avant-gardists imagined a socialist Moscow of clean right angles; others proposed simply abandoning the city. Many believed that the Kremlin, a church-laden symbol of medieval tyranny at the heart of the city, should be deëmphasized, or worse. By the time the Soviets were ready to do anything about it, Joseph Stalin was in charge, and under him the medieval character of Moscow was not fundamentally altered. Instead, the Stalinists built gigantic avenues that ran in all directions from the Kremlin like rays from the sun. There were few cars around to fill these avenues, but they provided a fine, broad line of sight for Soviet leaders during military parades.

Then came capitalism. The registration laws that had made it almost impossible to move to Moscow during Soviet times ceased to be enforced, and meanwhile chaos, de-industrialization, and ethnic violence roamed the peripheries of the empire. Very soon it became clear that what Moscow had lost in political authority it had gained, and then some, in economic authority. By the end of the nineteen-nineties, there were more people in Moscow from all over the former Soviet Union than there had been when the Soviet Union was a single state. People from rural Russia, the Central Asian states, and Ukraine came to escape poverty; people from the Caucasus came to escape the war.

All of them wanted cars. The city’s plan with regard to this was not to have a plan at all. Planning was for socialists; under capitalism, the market would figure things out. In the post-Soviet years, Moscow filled up, first with kiosks, and flimsy freestanding grocery stores, and little old ladies selling socks. Eventually, these were replaced by office buildings and megastores and even luxury condominiums; the spaces once reserved for new roads or metro stations were given over to construction. Blinkin recalls a commission that he received from the Soviet government, only months before its collapse, to project the rate of automobile growth over the next twenty-five years. “We knew the trajectory of automobilization in many countries of the world, and so we predicted exactly what happened,” he says. What happened was that the number of cars in Moscow went from sixty per thousand residents in 1991 to three hundred and fifty in 2009. “And we were very proud of ourselves for being so smart. Then, a while later, I met some guys who sold foreign cars, who’d done a marketing prognosis, and without any of our international analogues or models they just thought, Well, restrictions are down, you can buy foreign cars as well as Russian ones, and they predicted the same rate of growth as we had! These car dealers predicted it.” Blinkin was dismissive of the car dealers, but in the early nineteen-nineties they included some of the most brilliant minds in the country. The first great post-Soviet fortune, after all, was made not from oil or gas or nickel: that came later. It was made when Boris Berezovsky, a mathematician and game theorist, started selling cars.

Last spring, Mayor Luzhkov fired the head of the city’s transportation department. Weeks earlier, the deposed chief had, like the three men who preceded him over the previous seven years, been harshly criticized for his failure to solve the traffic crisis. There are many problems that Luzhkov pretends not to know about, but traffic is not among them. In fact, it sometimes seems as if the Mayor thinks of nothing else. Whenever he goes abroad, he returns with a magical fix for the problem; whenever he has money to spare, he builds roads and digs tunnels. He has waged a relentless war against traffic lights—“He has a childlike notion that if he could just get rid of all the traffic lights everything would be fine,” Blinkin says—and on one central stretch running from the Kremlin almost all the way, but not quite, to Sheremetyevo Airport, outside town, he has just about eliminated them. He has turned numerous two-way streets into one-way streets and even proposed that the monstrous Garden Ring become one-way. Nothing helps. Muscovites continue to buy (and steal, and salvage, and order on eBay in North America, and ship to Finland) more cars than Luzhkov can build roads to drive them on.

The wise move would have been to invest in public transportation, to build up the city’s justly famous but sparse metro network and bring back the trams that killed the literary editor at the start of “The Master and Margarita”; instead, Luzhkov has been cool toward the metro and actively hostile to the trams. Public transportation is for losers. Instead, he spent billions to widen the Moscow Ring Road (a beltway around the city) and complete the construction of the fabled Third Ring Road, a freeway between the Garden Ring and the Moscow Ring, of which Muscovites had been talking since the nineteen-sixties. According to the traffic-analysis center at Yandex, the Third Ring is now the most clogged artery in the city. Luzhkov is unbowed: he has begun work on a Fourth Ring!

“No city has ever constructed itself out of congestion,” the transportation expert Vukan Vuchic, of the University of Pennsylvania, told me. “It’s impossible.” Vuchic visited Moscow in October and was depressed by what he saw, though also in a way impressed. “There are streets in the center that are four, five lanes wide in each direction,” he said. “You’d think it’d be impossible for them to be congested, but they are congested.”

In the past few years, visitors have often come to Russia to try to help. Last fall, I had lunch with Kiichiro Hatoyama, a traffic expert from Japan. As I learned later, Hatoyama is the son of Yukio Hatoyama, until recently the Prime Minister of Japan, but he was in Moscow in his capacity as a traffic engineer, to teach at Moscow State University. We ate at the Starlite Diner, a nineteen-nineties pro-American relic tucked into a small park, just off the Garden Ring. I wanted to know how a city with such vast avenues could have such awful traffic. Hatoyama raised three fingers.

“There are three main factors that determine a city’s traffic,” he said.

Finger 1: “Driver behavior.” Do drivers care that if they enter an intersection before a light turns red there’s a chance they’ll get stuck and create gridlock? Russian drivers do not. Impatient, angry, they will seize whatever inch of road is offered them. Russian drivers are jerks. Hatoyama put this differently. “Russian drivers lack foresight,” he said.

Finger 2: The traffic system itself, that is to say the organization of the roads. Moscow’s radial character puts it at a slight disadvantage compared with cities laid out on a grid, like New York, but the disadvantage need not be decisive: Tokyo is also a radial city. Hatoyama’s main criticism of Moscow is the lack of left-turn possibilities.

“As far as your bill is concerned Ive finally learned to say no.”

Finger 3: The social system, which is always reflected on the roads. One night last summer, I was out late and took a cab home. The streets at that hour were empty. As the cabdriver and I made our way past Pushkin Square, we noticed a policeman sprinting ahead of us and then mounting a traffic booth at the corner. The light turned red. He emerged from the booth and sprinted to a booth at the next corner. “Someone’s coming,” my driver announced. We sat before the red light for several minutes. Everything was quiet. Then a motorcade of black Mercedeses and S.U.V.s appeared from the direction of the Kremlin, whizzed past us, and disappeared into the night. Ten seconds passed, and the light turned green. “It is a feudal structure,” Hatoyama said of the privileges accorded Russia’s élite in the traffic system. “It causes many problems.” He had put down his three fingers and returned to his sandwich.

“Is there any other place that has that?” I asked. “Different rules for different drivers?”

Hatoyama chewed his sandwich slowly. When he answered, finally, with a single word, there was a certain satisfaction in his tone. “China,” he said.

A few years ago, Moscow tried to institute paid parking in the city center. It was odd, after all, that one of the most expensive cities in the world should let you park for free. The authorities deployed men in orange vests to accept payment for parking on the street. Very quickly, fake parking men appeared, also in orange vests, and then the press reported that the real parking men were delivering only a portion of the parking revenues to the city. In the end, Mayor Luzhkov gave in to public pressure and cancelled paid parking on the city’s streets.

Moscow is now a riot of parking. Cars park in crosswalks, on traffic islands, in many of the quiet courtyards of the city center, in historic squares. Vuchic, of the University of Pennsylvania, compares it to Austria in the nineteen-seventies. “You would go to Salzburg to look at the Mozart statue,” he said. “But you couldn’t see it, because Salzburg was a big parking lot.” The Austrians have since taken care of the problem, with zoning, signage, enforcement. In Moscow, things are getting worse. Throughout the city are signs indicating no-parking zones, but the rules are only occasionally enforced, and the fines are paltry. As a result, the Moscow pedestrian spends a lot of time scrambling over cars, or around them, sometimes being forced out into the street, even, because the cars have climbed onto the sidewalk.

Blinkin sees the parking troubles as a symbol of the city’s general lack of a legal and planning culture. “Try that in Munich or Boston!” he says of parking on the sidewalk. For Blinkin, the author of a legendary paper titled “The Etiology and Pathogenesis of Moscow Traffic,” there are profound social and structural issues preventing Moscow cars from moving. The broad avenues, for example, are good only for military parades. In New York, by contrast, there is an elegant two-tiered road system: street tier, on which pedestrians are primary and cars secondary, and freeway tier (the F.D.R. Drive, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway), where cars rule and there are no pedestrians at all. According to Blinkin, there isn’t a single proper freeway in Moscow. Even the outermost ring, which should serve as a beltway for cars trying to bypass the city entirely, has, since its expansion a decade ago, sprouted dozens of shopping centers, each with several exits and entrances onto the highway. The proposed Fourth Ring is not going to solve any of this. “You can’t just keep sending people in circles!” Blinkin exclaims. “They need to get off eventually, and then what?” The deeper problem—or, rather, the only way that the many deep problems can begin to be solved—is political: Luzhkov, who has been the ruler of Moscow for nearly twenty years now, needs to go.

Blinkin is a slim, energetic man in his early sixties with a bristly gray mustache. He was trained in the prestigious math department of Moscow State University, but then, after underperforming on the final exam on the history of the Communist Party, could find work only at a research institute on traffic. “At first, I was disappointed,” he told me. “But then I read some more and realized, Some very smart, respectable people have worked on this stuff.” He spent nearly twenty years at two Soviet research institutes devoted to “urban planning,” and in 1990 started a private think tank on traffic. Blinkin loves driving, and, when we first got in touch, owned a silver 1999 E-series Mercedes. But I could never get him to take me for a drive in it. “I’m taking the metro today,” he’d say when I called. “You’d have to be an idiot to drive in these conditions.”

In the past few years, as he has spoken out more and more, Blinkin has come to resemble a classic dissident—the Sakharov of traffic. Yet in a country where opposition figures are systematically shut out of the media, Blinkin has more exposure than he can handle. “During the past week, I’ve been on TV four times,” he told me when we first met, “and I’ve lost count of how many print interviews.” In the current political climate, traffic is a problem everyone is willing to discuss: the Kremlin-controlled media because it makes Luzhkov look bad; Luzhkov because he’s obsessed with it. Vuchic, who was born in Belgrade, was amused to note that he’d been interviewed by the old Party mouthpiece Izvestia . “Never in my life did I think I’d be printed in Izvestia! ” he said.

Like other major cities, Moscow has a traffic center, with banks of large monitors showing many of the city’s intersections. Several dozen traffic officers keep an eye on the situation, calling their men in the traffic booths to let them know what they should do. I got a short tour of the facility earlier this year, and it was impressive. The huge monitors; the policemen in uniform before them; the traffic moving, or sitting still, as the policemen watched—it gave a measure of the megalopolis, made it seem a manageable thing. But this was in some sense an illusion: although the police can watch, they are helpless. My guide pointed out the monitor banks for the poorer southern and eastern areas of the city, which are said to have the heaviest traffic. “Are those the worst parts?” I asked him.

He considered this, not wanting, perhaps, to offend the southern and eastern routes. “It’s all the worst part,” he said at last.

The police’s main competitor in the realm of traffic information is Yandex, which began monitoring traffic on its Web site in 2006 and in 2008 set up a separate “analytical center,” Yandex Probki ( probka means traffic jam). Yandex Probki issues periodic white papers on the state of traffic, and maintains a blog with interesting traffic highlights, but its main task is to keep perpetually updated a now iconic three-color street map of the city, showing real-time traffic flow on a number of routes. Above the map is a rating of the over-all traffic at that moment, from 1 (“The streets are clear”) to 9 (“The city has stopped”) and 10 (“You’re better off on the metro”). Probki now has around half a million daily visitors in Moscow, putting it neck and neck with News and Images, with Weather just around the bend.

When I visited this past winter, Yandex occupied a low-slung modern office building behind the Kursk train station. Though in the center of town, it was too far to walk from the metro, and a white Yandex shuttle took me there. The tri-color Yandex Probki map played on a large plasma screen above the receptionist. Upstairs, one small room was given over to three men who represented the old guard of traffic-watching: as if in a miniature version of the traffic police center, they sat before computer monitors and kept track of nearly a hundred camera feeds from the streets of the city, swivelling the cameras where necessary to keep up with events, and checked what they saw against the big map. But the center has more sophisticated tools at its disposal. As Maria Laufer, the head of Yandex Maps, explained, setting up cameras all over the megalopolis would be prohibitively expensive. Other cities use sensors embedded in the pavement to measure traffic flow; in Moscow these have a hard time surviving both the weather and the road repairs the weather necessitates. So Yandex, Laufer said, came up with “something like Communism—in the good sense of the word.” Her colleague Leonid Mednikov updated the formulation: “It’s a Wiki.” At first, drivers had sent information by phone or by text. As more and more drivers started using G.P.S.-enabled smartphones, Yandex asked them to download Yandex software onto their devices, so that information about their movements could be sent automatically to the Yandex servers. As the program grows, it is able to give an increasingly accurate and encompassing picture of the traffic situation at any given moment. While I was touring the office, it began to snow. Some time later, Mednikov entered the conference room, carrying his laptop before him like a lantern. “It’s at 10!” he announced of the traffic index. “It went from 5 to 10 in an hour and a half!” And so it was that the Yandex shuttle, making its way back to the metro with me as its only passenger, got stuck in traffic as it approached the Garden Ring.

In more poetic moments, Blinkin will invoke Julio Cortázar’s “Highway of the South,” a 1964 story about people stuck in a massive traffic jam on their way back into Paris after the weekend, stuck in it for so long that they begin to live in it. (“At first the girl in the Dauphine had insisted on keeping track of time,” the story begins, “though for the engineer in the Peugeot 404 it no longer held any importance.”) Hearing this, I recalled Vladimir Sorokin’s novella “The Queue,” from the era of the Brezhnev stagnation, which is also about a line—a line of people waiting to buy something (it’s never clear what, and they themselves do not know), the line so long, so complex, that they, too, begin to live in it.

We’ve been here before. The cars standing in endless lines on the crowded Moscow streets: they resemble nothing so much as the people who used to wait in endless lines outside the Moscow stores for Polish coats, Czech shoes, and, famously, toilet paper. Now, more comfortably, they wait for the light. They are willing to endure all manner of humiliation to keep driving. Recently, my friend Lyonya, a corporate lawyer, was stopped by the police and accused of drunk driving, even though he hadn’t had a drop of alcohol in fifteen years. Another time, Lyonya found his car trapped in a courtyard where he’d parked, because its residents had put up a gate while he was gone; unable to find anyone to ask about it, Lyonya finally dismantled the gate with some tools he always keeps in his car.

Yet he continues to drive, and, driving with him in his long black Mercedes CL (“Comfort Leicht”), you can see why. The car is so intelligent, so solicitous, that it will not let you slam the doors entirely closed, for fear that you’ll hurt your fingers. It waits a little, letting you get to safety, and only then does it shut the door. You get a different perspective on things from Lyonya’s Mercedes. Outside, the city is filthy, muddy, filled with exhaust; the Mercedes rides smoothly, swaddling you in leather. The city is violent and chaotic and anti-democratic; in the Mercedes, you can listen to the liberals arguing, subtly, intelligently, on the last redoubt of independent Russian mass media, Ekho Moskvy. In Moscow, there are far worse places to be trapped.

Over the past few years, Moscow drivers have become one of the city’s most active social groups, organizing to eliminate the corrupt meter maids and lobbying for more roads. After the death of the two doctors in the collision with the Lukoil Mercedes, a group of drivers began attaching blue sandbox buckets to the roofs of their cars, in imitation of sirens, as a protest against the abuse of the siren by the city’s bankers and oil executives. It’s been one of the most successful civic actions in years. And it makes sense: “car owner” is the one social category that has actually been created in the past twenty years, as opposed to all the social categories that have been destroyed. Perhaps this is the emergence, finally, of a propertied, stakeholding—and frustrated, selfish, neurotic—middle class.

On the morning of the subway bombings in Moscow, the city was thrown into disarray; only the emergency services managed to get anywhere. Photographs of the subway platform taken just minutes after the explosion showed medics among the debris, crouching over the wounded. When Blinkin, writing on an anti-Kremlin Web site, praised the emergency response, the commenters turned on him. “I was also impressed by the speed,” one said, raising the old oppositionist dogma about a Kremlin conspiracy. “It seems they knew in advance what was going to happen, and where.”

I asked my friends at Yandex what the traffic was like that day. They answered in a detailed e-mail. “After the first explosion, at Lubyanka (7:56), traffic jams began to form gradually at the adjacent streets,” they wrote. “After the second explosion (8:36), congestion continued to increase and remained at a high level until 11 o’clock. By contrast, on a regular weekday congestion reaches its peak at 9 A.M. and then begins to drain off.”

The next two days were more congested than usual, as many people who usually took the metro decided to drive to work instead. But Moscow could not function this way forever. “By Thursday,” the Yandex analysts concluded, “the city had returned to normal.”

It was true. Before long, the papers were reporting that the sons of two Moscow bureaucrats had been involved in an altercation. The son of a city prefect was stuck in traffic in his Lexus; the son of a municipal notary officer was riding his bicycle, weaving through the traffic, when he accidentally nicked the Lexus. The son of the prefect got out of his car and pushed the notary’s son (a poli-sci student) to the ground. Humiliated, the notary’s son went off and found a baseball bat somewhere—whether at home or at a sporting-goods store, the reports hadn’t yet determined—and returned to find the prefect’s son still stuck in traffic . He began smashing the windows of the Lexus with the baseball bat. When the prefect’s son got out of the car again, the notary’s son hit him, too, breaking his hand. Moscow’s leading tabloid, LifeNews , posted a photograph of the prefect’s son sporting a cast. A nice-looking young man, he was wearing a pink T-shirt that said “Dolce & Gabbana.” ♦

2024 NHL Mock Draft: Levshunov to Blackhawks, Dickinson to Blue Jackets? How Round 1 will shake out

It is NHL Draft season right now, and our readers should prepare for all kinds of big boards, mock drafts and debates in the coming weeks ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft.

Today I give my first projection for the first round. At this stage, many teams have not had their amateur meetings and don’t even have a list formed, so there isn’t great intel out there on who may take who. Thus for this mock, it’s more about giving our readers an idea of the range I think prospects are going to go in and trying to find fits for needs and team philosophies.

1. San Jose Sharks : Macklin Celebrini, C, Boston University-Hockey East

Celebrini is the consensus No. 1 pick. The Sharks GM has basically said that’s who they’re taking. We can move on.

2. Chicago Blackhawks : Artyom Levshunov, RHD, Michigan State-Big Ten

Our colleague Scott Powers believes it’s down to Levshunov or SKA winger Ivan Demidov for Chicago. Both are great prospects, but history has shown if it’s close the NHL team often will lean to the big defenseman over the smaller winger.

go-deeper

At No. 2, should Blackhawks draft Demidov, Levshunov or neither?

3. Anaheim Ducks : Anton Silayev, LHD, Torpedo-KHL

Anaheim is sitting in a great position because of how talented their group of young forwards are and the collection of high-end defense prospects at the top of this draft. Whether it’s Levshunov, Silayev or Sam Dickinson, the Ducks are in a great spot to leave with a big, mobile defenseman. Silayev as a huge and mean defender fits in very well with the kind of team GM Pat Verbeek wants to build. The league thinks if they go forward it would be for Cayden Lindstrom.

4. Columbus Blue Jackets : Sam Dickinson, LHD, London-OHL

The Blue Jackets could go in a few different directions. They’ve added forwards and defensemen high in the draft in recent years although if I had to pick a need for them it would be more defensive depth. Silayev or Dickinson feel like ideal adds for them for that reason based on need and best player available. They’re not in such a bind on defense though that this pick could easily be Ivan Demidov or Cayden Lindstrom up front.

morning walk essay 7th class

5. Montreal Canadiens : Ivan Demidov, LW, SKA-KHL

The draft breaking this way would be ideal for the Canadiens, who many in the league believe want to add a forward in this draft. They would have their pick of Demidov, Cayden Lindstrom, Beckett Sennecke and others. Demidov is considered the second-best forward in the draft by many and would fit a need for the Habs.

6. NHL Utah: Cayden Lindstrom, C, Medicine Hat-WHL

Utah has targeted premium athletes in recent drafts and Lindstrom fits that profile in spades.  He’s huge, fast and highly physical while being able to provide some offense. Lindstrom or Dickinson fits their profile.

7. Ottawa Senators : Zayne Parekh, RHD, Saginaw-OHL

The Senators have a massive need to add a premium puck-mover and if the draft goes like this they would have their pick between Parekh and Zeev Buium. Parekh could have a lot of success next to someone like Jake Sanderson for the next decade.

8. Seattle Kraken : Zeev Buium, LHD, Denver-NCHC

The Kraken are in a similar position to Ottawa where in an ideal world, they would add a defenseman and they could be in a prime position to do so. Buium or Parekh would make a lot of sense for their organization and add a lot of skill to their team.

9. Calgary Flames : Konsta Helenius, C, Jukurit-Liiga

The Flames have drafted a lot of wingers high in recent years so any center or defenseman would be ideal for their pick. It’s tempting to slot in Tij Iginla here for obvious reasons, but they really need someone like Helenius, Carter Yakemchuk or Buium/Parekh in their organization.

10. New Jersey Devils : Beckett Sennecke, RW, Oshawa-OHL

Sennecke is a fast riser right now in the draft after a great OHL playoff. He’s 6-2, can skate and is one of the most skilled players in the class. Some in the league think he has a chance to go higher than where I have him currently slotted. New Jersey has a ton of young talent at center and defense so they can afford to take a super talented winger, especially one who has some size.

11. Buffalo Sabres : Berkly Catton, C, Spokane-WHL

I feel a little off projecting another small forward being picked by the Sabres this high, but they’ve shown no hesitancy to draft smaller players, especially when they are super talented. Catton has every tool except size. I could see Helenius or Iginla as an option here as well.

12. Philadelphia Flyers : Carter Yakemchuk, RHD, Calgary-WHL

Yakemchuk has a wide range of opinions within teams, some have him as their No. 1 defenseman, some as their 6 th or 7 th ranked blueliner. That said the big-time skill and upside fit the profile Philadelphia would be likely to target. Catton and Iginla make a lot of sense here as well.

13. Minnesota Wild : Tij Iginla, LW, Kelowna-WHL

Iginla is a riser within teams so I could see him be long gone by 13. If he is here he checks the skill and compete boxes Bill Guerin would be looking for. Michael Brandsegg Nygard or Adam Jiricek make sense for the Wild as well.

14. San Jose Sharks: Adam Jiricek, RHD, Plzen-Czechia

This would be an ideal scenario for the Sharks to walk away with a potential top-four defenseman in Jiricek to go with Celebrini given how badly their system needs top blue-line prospects.

15. Detroit Red Wings : Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, RW, Mora-Allsvenskan

When I think Detroit, I think compete types and Brandsegg Nygard has that in spades. Jett Luchanko, Cole Beaudoin and Igor Chernyshov also fit here with Detroit feeling like a floor for Iginla.

16. St. Louis Blues : Stian Solberg, LHD, Valerenga-Norway

Solberg had a great playoff and opening to his World Championships for Norway. He ticks a lot of boxes NHL teams seek in his size, mobility and physicality and his offensive game has developed. He’s the kind of defenseman the Blues would like to target and need in their pipeline.

17. Washington Capitals : Cole Eiserman, LW, U.S. NTDP-USHL

Eiserman has been a point of debate all season but I still expect him to be a top-20 pick. Ideally, the Capitals would add a center or defenseman here but Eiserman’s offense would be too much to pass up at No. 17.

18. New York Islanders : Jett Luchanko, C, Guelph-OHL

Luchanko’s stock has been going sharply upward in the second half of the season into a likely mid-first due to his speed, compete and playmaking. He gives some needed center depth to the Islanders system.

19. Vegas Golden Knights : Trevor Connelly, LW, Tri-City-USHL

Connelly’s eventual landing spot will be one of the most interesting parts of draft weekend. Vegas is one of the spots some speculate he could land at because they are not afraid to take risks or take on bad PR.

20. Chicago Blackhawks: Igor Chernyshov, RW, Dynamo Moscow-KHL

Teams have Chernyshov rated a bit higher than this on talent but because he is Russian, I could see him get to around the 20 spot. His size, speed, skill and compete could be highly intriguing to Chicago.

21. Los Angeles Kings : Liam Greentree, LW, Windsor-OHL

Greentree’s stock was rising all season and then went in the other direction following a so-so U18 worlds. He’s still a big winger with a ton of skill and he’ll likely go in the 20s even though scouts have concerns about the pace of his game.

22. Nashville Predators: Dominik Badinka, RHD, Malmo-SHL

Badinka impressed scouts with his second-half play in Sweden. He’s a big, mobile right-shot who showed enough puck play versus men to make you think he can make passes in the NHL. He would provide a big boost to Nashville’s system which is light on defensemen.

23. Toronto Maple Leafs : Yegor Surin, C, Yaroslavl-MHL

Surin had a big postseason in Russia and I think has played his way into the first round due to being a hyper-competitive forward who can score as well. He fits what Toronto has looked for in recent drafts.

24. Anaheim Ducks: Charlie Elick, RHD, Brandon-WHL

I presume the Ducks will want to continue to get bigger and heavier, and adding a punishing defender like Elick at No. 24 to go with Silayev at No. 3 would make their future blue line a lot harder to play against. EJ Emery makes a lot of sense here for similar reasons as well.

25. Colorado Avalanche : Nikita Artamonov, LW, Torpedo-KHL

Artamonov had a very good season in the KHL and could be a late first/early second due to how high his skill level is. In a thin Colorado system, he would vault right toward the top in terms of offensive abilities and playmaking.

26. Ottawa Senators: Cole Beaudoin, C, Barrie-OHL

Beaudoin’s name is buzzing in scout circles after a great U18 worlds where he displayed a super likable style of play with his size and high-end compete. I expect his name to be called comfortably into round one as he looks like an all-day third-line center in the NHL with a chance to be more.

27. Montreal Canadiens: Sacha Boisvert, C, Muskegon-USHL

Boisvert had a strong year in the USHL. As a 6-2 center who can skate and has some offense, he would provide some essential center depth to the Habs pipeline.

28. Carolina Hurricanes : Michael Hage, C, Chicago-USHL

Hage is a highly talented forward with the speed and high-end skill to take over a shift and would fit the profile of the type of player Carolina tends to target. He was one of the top forwards in the USHL last season.

29. Calgary Flames: Dean Letourneau, C, St. Andrew’s College-Ontario High School

Letourneau is one of the most interesting prospects in this year’s class. He’s a 6-6 center who skates well for a big man and has legit offensive abilities. Someone is going to gamble on that type of talent, and with two first-rounders, Calgary takes the swing in this projection.

30. Philadelphia Flyers: EJ Emery, RHD, U.S. NTDP-USHL

Emery had a strong end to his season at the U18 worlds. He scored zero goals on the season, but he’s a big, mobile, high-impact defenseman that Philly can project to make a lot of stops.

31. Dallas Stars : Sam O’Reilly, C, London-OHL

O’Reilly has played a big role in London’s strong season and playoff run. He’s not the flashiest player, but he does a lot well. He plays with pace, works hard and has good offensive touch while projecting as a pro center.

32. New York Rangers : Linus Eriksson, C, Djurgarden-Allsvenskan

Eriksson wouldn’t be the sexiest first-round pick, but he’s a 200-foot center who has shown well versus men this season and has good offensive traits as well. The Rangers could use some quality depth down the middle and he would help.
