NRF-NUFFIC Doctoral Scholarships for 2022

We would like to draw your attention to the NRF-Nuffic Doctoral Scholarship opportunity. A pre-announcement can be found here:

https://www.nrf.ac.za/sites/default/files/documents/2021%20NRF-Nuffic%20Doctoral%20Scholarships%20Pre-Call%20Announcement.pdf .

The funding call will open in April 2021, to fund doctoral degrees starting in 2022.

This scholarship will fund a 4-year joint PhD between a South African and a Dutch institution (with 2 years spent in SA, and 2 in the Netherlands), with the final degree awarded jointly by both institutes.

The Rhodes Centre for Radio Astronomy Techniques & Technologies (RATT) has a long-standing collaboration with the University of Groningen. We are therefore prepared to endorse an NRF-Nuffic application from a qualified South African candidate. We propose to supervise a PhD project in the field of 21cm cosmology and/or its observational aspects, such as calibration and imaging.

Please note that the application process is handled by the NRF directly, however, the research proposal must be endorsed by the supervisors, and we are only allowed to endorse one proposal a year. Therefore, we will need to conduct our own pre-selection process in order to identify a candidate. If you would like to apply for pre-selection, could you please e-mail us (see below) your CV, a motivational letter (can be part of the e-mail), and names of referees before 1 June 2021.

Eligibility : you must be an SA citizen or a permanent resident, no older than 32, with either (a) a completed MSc degree, or (b) expecting to complete your MSc by the end of 2021.

The value of the scholarship is R175,000 p.a., and top-up funding from the Dutch side is available to offset the increased cost of living in the Netherlands.

The scholarship is an excellent opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and build an international profile. We look forward to receiving your applications.
