  • How to Apply for A PhD Abroad – International Study
  • Applying to a PhD

So you’ve decided to enrol onto a doctoral degree and study abroad at the same time. This is a great opportunity to develop yourself both personally and academically. However, do you actually go about securing a PhD as an international student? To help answer this for you, we’ve created this guide to explain how to apply for a PhD in foreign universities.

Why Do Your PhD Abroad?

There are many benefits to studying abroad.

Some PhD students do so as a way to develop a new language, discover more about a different culture, and to meet new people.

Besides personal reasons, undertaking a doctorate degree abroad can also for academic purposes. For example, in some countries, a particular research field may not be very popular and so there may not be many doctorate options available. In these cases, undertaking a PhD abroad will open up many more opportunities. It could also offer greater funding, lower tuition fees, better laboratory equipment and more experienced supervisors. Not only would these factors result in a more enjoyable PhD, but they could also contribute to greater career prospects. For example, you will likely have more opportunities to write publications, attend conferences and collaborate with other researchers. All of these will help you establish yourself as a respectable researcher within your field.

Is It Difficult to Apply to PhDs Abroad?

It’s not as difficult as you would imagine when it comes to applying to a PhD in a foreign country. Regardless of whether you’re applying to a university within the EU, such as the UK, Finland or Spain, or to universities within the US or Asia, the processes are relatively similar.

The differences in the application process can be categorised into three areas.

  • the documents you need to provide,
  • the prerequisite tests you need to sit,
  • how much you need to communicate with the potential supervisors before applying.

We’ve provided a basic outline of the application processes below. Although this will provide you with a good starting point, we highly recommend you look at the university websites for specific instructions and guidance before applying.

Will I Need a Student Visa?

This will depend on what country you are applying to. For example:

  • In the UK, applicants from outside the EU will need a Visa Tier 4 (Student). This will allow them to undertake a full-time PhD. However, due to UK visa restrictions, international students are unlikely to be able to enrol onto a part-time degree.
  • In Germany, most students will not require a student visa but will require a residence permit.
  • In the US, applicants will need to hold an F-1 Student Visa.
  • In Asia, the requirements differ depending on the specific country. For example, in China, you will require an X1 Student Visa whereas in Singapore you will require a Student Pass.

Because of the significant differences between countries, we highly recommend it is highly that you check the requirements on an individual case-by-case basis. This is best done by checking the government website of the country you wish to apply to.

General Process for Applying to PhDs Abroad

When applying to a PhD position, most universities regardless of where they’re located will require:

  • Online Application – An electronic form to provide your details and attach all supporting documents. You will also need to make any application fees during this process if required.
  • Academic Transcripts – Most universities need a scanned copy of your transcripts when applying. You will only have to submit official hard copies once they have accepted your admission.
  • CV – This should include details of your previous education, undergraduate degree and any experiences revenant to the field you’re applying to.
  • Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement – A letter which outlines why you’re applying to the PhD and why you believe you’re suitable for the project.
  • Letters of Recommendation – this should preferably be provided by your undergraduate degree course tutor or a professor who knows you well.

Language Tests

If your PhD is to be undertaken in English and English isn’t your first language, most universities will require you to sit an English language proficiency test. The most common tests, in order of popularity, are:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English)

The minimum test scores will change from university to university. They will also vary depending on the research field. For example, research projects related to English Literature or Law will require relatively high scores whilst projects in Science and Engineering will require slightly lower scores. To provide an example, the University of Leicester in the UK requires a minimum overall IELTS score of 7 for Law PhDs but has a lower overall score requirement of 6 for Engineering PhDs.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

How to Apply for PhDs in EU Countries

For UK universities, there are generally two ways of applying. You can either apply directly through the university’s website or you can make an application through the UCAS Postgraduate system .

In Spain, Italy and Germany, before applying to a PhD you will first need to pass a pre-application process. This involves checking that your qualifications meet their eligibility requirements. Before undergoing this pre-screening process, it would be beneficial to first speak to your government. They may offer advice on how your countries qualification system corresponds to the qualification system in the country hosting the PhD.

Once you’ve made your application, the university will review it and get in contact with you. For most EU institutions, they will invite you for a Skype or telephone interview with them if they believe you may be a suitable candidate.

If you require a student visa to study in an EU country, it’s recommended that you submit your application at least 3-4 months before the proposed PhD start date.

How to Apply for PhDs in USA

In addition to the English language exams mentioned previously, international applicants will also need to sit additional exams to be eligible for PhDs in the USA. These are the GRE General Exam and GRE Subject Exam(s). The GRE Subject Exam(s) you will need to undertake will be specific to your field and will be specified by the university as part of their edibility requirements.

Securing a PhD position in the United States is considered relatively difficult compared to other countries. As a result, it is commonly recommended that you apply to at least 9 different universities to increase your chances of securing a position.

How to Apply for PhDs in Asia

As Asia covers a wide range of countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, UAE and India, their application processes naturally differ from one another. Therefore, check the specific application process for each university you’re interested to get the most accurate information.

To summarise:

  • China – uses two centralised application services, CUAC and CUCAS. Both these services help international students find and apply to a PhD project in China. Students can also apply directly to a University if they wish to.
  • Singapore – rather than applying to a specific research project, you will have to apply to a faculty or department within a University. Only once you have been accepted into the university department will their research projects become available to you. Like US universities, most universities in Singapore will have required you to have sat a GRE Exams prior to applying to them.
  • UAE – you must apply directly to your chosen university. To be eligible for a PhD in UAE, you must hold a Master’s degree and it must be from a university recognised by their government. You will also be required to undertake GRE Exams before making your application.

How to Apply for PhDs in Australia

To apply to a PhD in Australia, you will first be expected to find and email a potential supervisor. If you’re an international student and you make an application directly to the university without doing this first, it’s highly likely that you won’t be considered for the position.

Upon discussing the project with the supervisor, they will instruct you to put in a formal application. This formal application will require the information previously outlined above.

Similar to EU institutions, if an Australian university believes you’re a strong candidate, they will likely invite you to a Skype or telephone interview.

Unlike EU universities, PhDs in Australian universities can start at any time of the year. Therefore, unless a specific funding requirement is attached to the project, there are usually no deadlines associated with applying to their PhDs. However, try to apply 3 to 4 months before you intend to start your studies.

Ph.D or D.Phil – A Doctor of Philosophy is the highest level of formal education. It encompasses different subject areas as diverse as science, humanities, engineering, literature etc., and is considered to be the first step towards beginning a professional career as a professor, researcher or scientist.

A PhD requires a lot of hard work and dedication. It involves diving deep into the intricacies of a very specific topic and eventually helping you reach the border line between knowing something and knowing everything.

How to apply for a PhD?

A person who achieves a PhD is awarded the title of ‘Doctor’. Here are some elements that will be considered when you enrol for a PhD programme:

Academic qualifications: To enrol for a PhD programme, you must have completed an honours or masters degree in the relevant field. Some institutions require candidates to complete an MPhil programme to be eligible for PhD applications.

Academic records: Your academic records will also be considered before you are allowed to pursue PhD. A reasonably good score in your undergraduate and postgraduate

Research projects: Research publications are equally important if you want to see yourself making a mark in your chosen field.

Research proposal: Several universities abroad allow you to research a set project which will be funded or design your own project wherein you’ll have to fund it or apply for external funding. If you are designing your own research project, you will have to submit a research proposal. It is nothing but the outline of your research project.

Apart from these, you might have to submit other documents such as reference letters, proof of English language proficiency, and resume.

You can apply for a PhD either with scholarship or without scholarship. To obtain a PhD with scholarship, you need to secure a good GRE score. Some countries prefer IELTS/TOEFL scores for enrolling a candidate into a PhD programme.

All you need is to formulate your own ideas on a particular topic on which you wish to obtain a PhD.  The more homework you do, the better the chances of getting a good supervisor. Find a supervisor who will be able to guide you in your thesis and encourage your homework. This will prove that you are serious about your goals. Choose a professor who will understand and show interest in your line of work. Choose a professor whose work is in line with your research interests.

Read about the supervisor and study his publications deeply. Understand if the work done by the professor complements your future research interest.

A PhD thesis is an integral part of your journey towards achieving a doctorate. On successful completion of a doctorate degree, you will be eligible to work as a professor or researcher.

Finally, you should have a visa or study permit (based on your preferred country) to purpue your PhD abroad.

India vs. Abroad: The Best Destination for a PhD

Google was founded based on the Ph.D. research done by Sergey Brin and Larry Page at Stanford University. They invented an algorithm to rank pages automatically that powered the initial Google search algorithm.

John Nash introduced the Nash Equilibrium in his Ph.D. thesis. This revolutionized the game theory.

From the two examples, we see that Ph.D. is all about taking your knowledge and understanding of your subject to the next, expert-level where you find answers to unsolved questions and theories and upgrade the existing solutions, or theorize your answers based on deep research and analysis.

Now comes the decision regarding where to pursue the doctoral program from. The choice of India vs. abroad that every student has to make at least once in their career paths. Both are excellent choices according to the preferences of the candidate.

However, there is always an ongoing debate on India vs. abroad for further studies. Let’s delve into that and see which one is better?

It is a foregone conclusion that in pursuance of your doctoral you will pick up the language of your chosen country as well as some more foreign languages. These enhanced linguistic skills will further be helpful in your research and beyond.

Entry requirements vary between countries and disciplines. So you will have to check the requirements and choose a country that fits your needs. The reasons to consider for choosing to pursue a Ph.D. abroad might vary from the number of compulsory hours of teaching, duration of a Ph.D., your prospects and status post the doctoral program, and your desire to gain teaching experience; if at all.

Your prospects in your home ground are bound to get enhanced once you can attain your degree abroad. Thus your local companies would value your experience and exposure.

  • This type of position can provide practical experience that is useful for a future career in academia.
  • If being a TA is not desirable, there are other fellowships available, such as Research Assistantships (RA), where students can assist senior researchers and professors in a laboratory setting.

When considering a Ph.D. program, it is important to take into account various factors before choosing a university and mentor that you will work with to complete your dissertation.

Choosing a Mentor and University

  • Choosing the right mentor for your Ph.D. studies is crucial.
  • It is important to find a professor who is interested in your area of research and whose interests align with yours.
  • It is helpful to do your homework and thoroughly research professors and departments to find the best fit.
  • It is also important to make sure that the university or department you are applying to specializes in your field of study.

Obtaining a Ph.D. degree from a foreign university can greatly enhance your career prospects and allow you to make meaningful contributions to your field of study. Many Indian students seek Ph.D. programs at respected universities around the world. After completing a master's degree, a Ph.D. program allows students to delve deeper into their area of interest. Currently, numerous universities worldwide offer a wide range of Ph.D. programs.

Countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and Australia are among the leading destinations for international students seeking Ph.D. programs , provided they have good grades and research experience. However, before applying to a university, there are several steps to consider.

The journey of an overseas Ph.D. program starts with thorough research on the universities in a given nation that provide the specific course combined with their eligibility/entry requirements. You must also keep in mind the deadlines for applying to the degree of your choice and the topic or specialization in which you want to do the doctorate. Proper research of the universities, the facilities, the faculty (in the subject you've selected), and their areas of specialization must be done before deciding on the specialization.

When selecting a supervisor for your research at a university, it is important to carefully consider the supervisor's knowledge and experience in the field of your chosen specialization and ensure that their research interests align with yours. Your potential supervisor should also have experience guiding similar thesis projects and be able to provide support throughout your Ph.D. program.

Keep in mind that established supervisors may receive numerous requests from Ph.D. applicants but can only accept a limited number of students each semester, so it is important to reach out to them formally (via email) to express your interest and reserve a spot.

It is advisable to research the supervisor's academic and research background, the number of students they typically work with, and the level of support they can provide. It is also advisable to follow up with the supervisor regularly and ask relevant questions about your Ph.D. program to help you prepare a strong university application.

Your university application is a crucial document that can determine whether or not you are accepted into the program of your choice. It is important to carefully craft your application to highlight your background, strengths, passions, and aspirations.

In addition to considering the curriculum and your academic accomplishments, you should also think about your future goals and consider what you hope to do after earning your Ph.D. degree. Whether you want to pursue a career in academia, research, or another field, it is important to prepare yourself to meet the requirements of your desired role to succeed in the industry you hope to join.

There are generally some similarities in the process of applying for a Ph.D. program at universities in different countries. However, there may be some differences between the specific documents required and the language proficiency tests that you need to take. For example, some universities may require you to provide transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement, while others may have additional or different requirements.

It is important to carefully review the requirements for each university you are considering and ensure that you have all the necessary documents and meet any language requirements before submitting your application. Similarly, you may need to take a language proficiency test, such as the TOEFL or IELTS , to demonstrate your ability to communicate in the language of instruction at the university.

Whether you need a student visa to study abroad for a Ph.D. program will depend on the country to which you are applying. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, non-EU students may need to apply for a Tier 4 Visa to pursue a full-time Ph.D. program. In Germany, students may need a residence permit rather than a student visa. In the United States, students typically need to apply for an F-1 student visa.

The requirements for obtaining a student visa in Asian countries may vary. For example, in China, you may need an X1 Student Visa, while in Singapore, you may need a Student Pass. It is recommended to check the government website of the specific country you are interested in studying in to learn about the specific requirements for obtaining a student visa or other documentation needed for studying abroad.

If you are thinking about applying for a Ph.D. program abroad from India, it is important to research the specific requirements of the country and university you are applying to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the procedure and what you have to do.

In the United Kingdom, Ph.D. candidates do not typically need to take written exams but must produce an externally examined thesis. In the United States, universities may require letters of recommendation and an essay outlining the purpose of the Ph.D. program. In Australia, students may need to provide a review of relevant research literature and an original research project in addition to their thesis to be awarded a Ph.D. degree.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an international higher education better than studying at a domestic university.

The common notion is that foreign universities are expensive, although with scholarships this is an exaggerated issue. What many fail to consider are time and effort. Studying in an Indian college leads to a lower average salary than earned by our western counterparts. This salary sets the tone for all future promotions since companies often look at your previous salaries during compensation appraisals. Additionally, most senior positions tend to be scooped up by individuals who have an international outlook through global exposure.  Finally, studying in a foreign country is an incredible learning experience helping students get a better academic as well as soft skill development.

Why has Canada become such a popular destination for education?

Canada has been one of the market leaders in education for decades. However, what currently sets Maple Country apart is immigration. Canada is wholeheartedly inviting students to study in their universities to fill job vacancies that are always growing in the country. Students who study in Canada (especially a Master’s Degree) are practically assured of a Permanent Residency Visa.

Is a good entrance test score important for a scholarship?

A good score doesn’t automatically qualify a candidate for a scholarship, however, it is one of the primary factors that the admissions department looks for in a scholarship application. There are other attributes such as a candidate’s academics, extra-curricular, financial background, and application essays (SOPs).

How do I choose the right university for me?

We get this question a lot. Many candidates know which career path they want to take, but are at a loss for how to take that journey. Understanding the job role and the industry that you want to get into is the first step to picking the right university.

Where should i study abroad?

Carefully consider the immigration options of the country that the university that you are considering is in. This is more important when you intend to stay back in the country after the completion of your course.

Also, review the placement history of the university as well.

The first step is to list your preferences. By listing your preferences and strengths, describe your course of preference. Extensive research on the modules, software and its length for your preferred subject is necessary.

Pursue a PhD Abroad: All You Need to Know

Start preparing for your PhD abroad with the help of this comprehensive guide, which includes the top countries and best programs to build your career. Discover everything about your PhD abroad program, including program requirements, fees, career outlook, salary, and the benefits of pursuing a PhD abroad. after MBA.

What is a Ph.D?

PhDs are an essential part of the knowledge economy as completing a PhD is all about creating new knowledge, discovering new things, and developing new skills . A postgraduate doctoral degree is awarded to students who complete an original thesis offering a significant unique contribution to knowledge in their subject.

Some of the Stages in a typical PhD includes typically -

  • The student has to carry out a literature review or a survey of current scholarship in your subject.
  • The next stage will be conducting original research and collecting your results.
  • Present your conclusions by producing a thesis.
  • Once you prepare a thesis, you need to submit it as a dissertation.
  • The final stage is defending your thesis in an oral viva voice exam.

Even though a PhD is challenging and demanding , it is immensely rewarding as it is your chance to contribute to the sum of human knowledge. Another added advantage is that there is no age limit to applying for a PhD program, which means it’s never too late to fulfill your dream of doing research.

Why do a PhD?

If you are wondering why do you want to do a doctorate, here are some excellent reasons to pursue a PhD -

  • If you have ambitious enough to challenge yourselves and desire to achieve something significant in your field of study, a Ph.D. would be the right choice for you.
  • A PhD would help you learn or discover something new.
  • A PhD degree helps you develop transferable skills such as being team players and problem solvers, which will go well with the employers.
  • Another reason to pursue a PhD program is that it allows you to carry out cutting edge research.

The research process of a PhD program can be broke down into three years as follows -

First Year The first step in a Ph.D. program will be your literature review. You will seek guidance from your supervisor to ensure your work is original. This literature review will be the beginning of your research and also involves designing and implementing experiments.

Second Year You will start doing your core research in your second year of Ph.D., and your primary focus will be on gathering results from experiments, archival research, surveys, or other means. The second year is a crucial stage in your program as you will start writing chapters which will be part of your dissertation.

Third Year The third year is the writing up phase in your Ph.D. program, during which your main task will be pulling together your results and finalizing your dissertation. The final part of your Ph.D. program will be your oral viva voice exam, which is a formal discussion and defense of your thesis.

PhD vs. Doctorate

A PhD is a high-level degree which you get after three or four years of graduate study, which includes creation, submission, presentation, and defense of a research dissertation.

Even though a Doctorate is also a high-level degree , but it only emphasizes on existing bodies of knowledge and raising questions to solve a problem and applying theories to a real-world setting.

Some of the other differences are -

  • One of the significant differences is that with PhD, you generate a new theory whereas, with a professional doctorate, you start from a place of practice.
  • The goal of a PhD is to advance the field through theoretical research and constructing new knowledge and theories whereas the purpose of a professional doctorate is to improve the field through applying an existing body of knowledge, research, and history.
  • The expected outcome of a PhD is to conduct theoretical research and seek a tenured academic position. The result of a professional doctorate is an opportunity to practice in the field and advance to leadership. You can also teach in higher education institutions.

PhD After MBA

You can pursue a PhD program after an MBA because the PhD program allows you to do research, independent study, and obtain specialised knowledge in a particular field which is not the case with the more useful and commercially useful MBA degree.

The most popular career path post, a PhD after an MBA is to become a professor . But this is not the only option you have as there are several areas in which you can specialise while pursuing your PhD after an MBA.

Some of the areas of specialisation are -

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Decision Sciences
  • Ethics and Legal Studies
  • Human Resource Management
  • Operations Management
  • Healthcare and Management
  • Organisational Behaviour

Even though the majority of the doctoral graduates find jobs as faculties in universities, some of them head towards industry positions as well . The degrees of a Business Ph.D. along with an MBA, provides a set of unique skills which will go well with the employers.

Application Process

Before you apply for a Ph.D. program, make sure you understand the requirements for the same.

Here are some of the requirements -

For all English based programs, it is compulsory to pass a language exam like IELTS or TOEFL.

  • Letters of Recommendation

Most of the universities require you to send three letters of recommendation. Your previous academic advisor should provide one, and other letters can be from people who have supervised you in a work or community service.

The research proposal is the most critical part of your Ph.D. application as it will help you showcase your knowledge in the subject.

  • Letter of Motivation

You will have to submit a letter of recommendation to explain your objectives and determination to work on the project.

  • Ph.D. entrance exam

Some of the universities might want you to write an entrance exam, which is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to gauge your skills and knowledge. But it is not mandatory for all the universities as it depends on the country you have chosen.

Do I Need Publications to get a Fully-Funded PhD Abroad?

By dr. sriyash mangal, phd.

Requirements of Publications for PhD Abroad:  It’s a natural question to ask when applying to a PhD program: “Do I need to already have publications before I apply?”. Simply put the answer is No, you do not need to have published papers to apply to a PhD. In my career of advising PhD aspirants, I have always seen students worrying too much about not having publications. Some students even consider having publications as an eligibility requirement to pursue PhD abroad. So, do you really need to have publications on your CV when applying for PhD positions?

The answer is NO. Publications are not required to secure a fully-funded PhD position. However, the prospective supervisor or the admissions committee wants to see that you have the skills required to be an excellent researcher. Indeed, publications are a good indication of this, but they are not the only way to demonstrate that you have strong research skills. There are other things that can make up for not having any publications, like:

  • presenting research at conferences,
  • having a nicely written bachelor’s or master’s dissertation
  • internships at reputed institutes, companies, industry, universities, hospitals or any other research centre
  • having hands-on experience in techniques commonly used in your area of research interest
  • having ongoing research which is on track for publication in the near future
  • having excellent letters of recommendation

A publication on your CV (even if it’s in a different field) can help your application stand out when applying to a competitive program or make up for a weakness elsewhere in your application. But, it does not mean that students with publications on their CV have a higher chance of getting selected. Professors and admissions committee gives more or equal weightage to other factors also like your communication skills, working style, problem-solving skills, knowledge about the research area & the subject in general, character and personality, and what your teachers/ professors think about you. In addition, they pay close attention to how well you present yourself in the statement of purpose and whether or not you are able to write an impressive research proposal.

Keep in mind that every field has different a publication output. For example, in arts & humanities, a large number of students graduate from PhD programs without any publication, therefore, PhD applicants are not at really expected to have any publications. Some subjects like Biology have longer experiment times, so professors don’t mind assessing your quality of work from your bachelor’s or master’s thesis.

Rather than worrying about publications, you should focus on gaining proper research experience and learning the techniques that are used in your field. Write a nice master’s or bachelor’s thesis and engage in every research/ academic activity such as conferences and workshops that come your way. These are equally valuable ways to demonstrate that you have the kind of research experience that makes you a promising applicant.

To conclude, most universities, PhD programs and scholarship award committees will not expect a potential PhD student to have publications at the time of applications. You should, however, make sure that you emphasize in your application all the different times or ways in which you demonstrate your ability to think like a researcher. Your research proposal and statement of purpose are two such documents where you get a chance to showcase your writing abilities, communication skills, ability to think logically, and knowledge about the area of interest. In addition, your referees should also comment on how good of a researcher you are. Therefore, the success of your application is not determined by the number of publications you have, but by the quality of the application package you have submitted. This includes Statement of Purpose, Letter of Recommendations, Research Proposal, any other essay, and CV.

doing a phd after mba

Higher studies often encompass the decision of pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s and then, if you feel like delving deeper into your chosen field, a doctorate degree. When it comes to the vast domain of commerce, a PhD is commonly chosen by those wanting to explore the academic arena. Working professionals don’t usually opt for a PhD given the extensive amount of time it demands and also because it has more academic use. So, if you have recently completed your Master of Business Administration, choosing a PhD might require some thinking to finally arrive at the right decision. This blog aims to elaborate on what a PhD after MBA entails and how it can advance you further in your career journey.

This Blog Includes:

Phd after mba in india, benefits of phd after mba, top phd programs after mba, eligibility, phd after mba abroad – admission process & entrance exams , phd after distance mba, phd after mba in finance, top universities for phd after mba abroad, top countries to study phd after mba, career scope & employment sectors.

Want to pursue PhD after MBA in India? There are colossal benefits of PhD after an MBA that can equip you with a competitive edge in the management and business world as well as the research and professional exposure you need to aim for high-salary managerial profiles in India and abroad. Here’s what you need to know about PhD after MBA in India:

  • Eligibility : You must have completed a 2-year MBA degree to apply for PhD in India along with qualifying for UGC-NET or GATE exam to gain admission at top business schools and universities in India.
  • Duration : In India, you can complete your PhD after MBA in 3-5 years depending upon the program and university.
  • Requirements : For PhD after MBA in India, you must have GATE/ UGC-NET / CSIR-NET scores, a research proposal ready along with letters of recommendation and optional work experience to increase your chances of admission.

As the highest academic degree in theoretical disciplines, a PhD or Doctorate of Philosophy is perfect for those seeking a greater depth of knowledge in a specific area of interest. Going for a PhD after MBA can be beneficial for a plethora of reasons, some of which are given in a rundown below:

  • Get a Competitive Edge over MBA
  • Master Research Skills and Methodologies
  • Inclination Towards Academic Arena
  • Chance to Become a Professor
  • Become an Academician at Business School

Get a Competitive Edge over MBA with a PhD Though many would tell you that with a PhD after MBA you can only ground yourself in the academic world, this is not the case in reality. If you don’t see yourself fitting the position of a lecturer or a professor, you can explore varied prospects in the corporate sector. A doctoral degree in a business or management specialisation imparts you with a deep-embedded and insightful knowledge of the commercial world. An MBA also gives you a unique and practical glimpse of this domain. The combination of these two can be potentially utilised by opting for the role of a consultant or analyst for entrepreneurial ventures, business giants or even hedge funds and investment-related firms.

Master Research Skills and Methodologies To begin with, a PhD is research-extensive by nature and demands individuals to submit their original thesis to conclude this degree. Opportunities After IISER: Packages, Placements, PhD?

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) is a chain premium research institute in India that has the tag of Institute of National Importance. The rigorous academics and cutting-edge research prepares students to become a world-class researcher. IISER offers a flagship five-year long BS-MS program along with other programs like PhD and Integrated PhD.

One of the main questions that every IISER aspirant has is about the opportunities after IISER. Many are concerned about the salary and packages one can receive after completing the rigorous five-year-long degree program. Others want to know what jobs students are offered upon graduation. So, this article contains all the information on the same.

SciAstra YouTube Video: Salary & placements after IISER, NISER | What after BS-MS by NISER student

How IISER Prepares You for a PhD?

Unlike other colleges, IISERs are not built for placements. IISER is built for students who are passionate about exploring basic science and conducting fundamental research. Hence, many IISERs do not have a dedicated placement cell. So, unlike engineering colleges, you won’t find companies on your campus interviewing you and offering you 9 to 5 jobs.

Instead, most of the IISER students apply for a PhD rather than a job. But Ph. D. is not just another degree program but a work-study program. During your PhD years, you will have to conduct your own research under an established researcher who will be your principal investigator. Doing a Ph. D. at a prestigious institute and lab can earn you a nice stipend.

IISER students have an upper edge in PhD applications and are often preferred over other graduates both in India and Abroad. PhD positions secured after IISER are fully funded – meaning that all your expenses, including tuition fees and living expenses, will be covered by a grant or fellowship.

Ph.D. in Foreign Countries:

Good profile and academics during IISER can land you into Ivy League colleges. Favorite destinations for PhD for IISER students have been MIT , Stanford , Oxford, Cambridge, Max Planck, ETH Zurich, etc.

In the United Kingdom. The average tenure of PhD is around four years. The average stipend is 18,662 pounds or INR 19.36 Lakhs per year. This much is enough to cover your living expenses, and you’ll still be able to save 50k to 80k per month.

In other countries of Europe, the project tenure and funding are the same as in the UK, but the stipend varies with different countries. For example, Denmark offers an average stipend of INR 51.67 Lakhs per year. In Norway, the average annual stipend is INR 49.75 Lakhs per year. In general, students are able to save around 50k to 1 Lakh per month easily.

In the United States, you have to be a Teaching Assistant for a year or two and the actual PhD starts in the third year. The duration of a PhD, on average, can be four or six years. The average stipend is 15,000 to 30,000 USD per year, which translates to INR 12.5 to 25 lakh per year.

PhD in India:

Obtaining a PhD in India is a little more difficult than in foreign countries. IISERs, IITs , IISc , TIFR , and NCBS are popular choices for PhD in India. The average stipend is around 31,000 to 37,000 per month, which is enough, considering the cost of living in India.

Qualifying exams like GATE and CSIR offer an upper edge while applying for a PhD in India. However, many IISER students can secure a PhD position without having qualified GATE and CSIR.

What After PhD?

If you want to remain in academia after your PhD and become a professor, you will have to do a post-doc in a lab or research institute. The duration for Post-Doc varies from one to two years. The average stipend offered abroad is INR 3-5 lakhs per month, whereas in India, you can expect the stipend to be around 57k to 74k per month. After completing your Post-Doc, you can apply for faculty positions at different universities.

You can also join the Industrial Sector after completing your PhD as a Research Scientist and expect an average salary of INR 7.8 lakhs per annum in India. Scientists and Life Scientists in the U.S. and Canada can earn around INR 98.5 lakhs per annum. Depending on your discipline and Industry, the average varies a lot. Following is a table comparing the average salary for different industrial roles.

Many IISER students also appear for exams like CAT, XAT, SNAP, and NMAT to pursue an MBA. Qualifying for these exams can guarantee your admission to premium institutes like IIMs, XLRI, SIBM, or NMIMS. The average package after the completion of an MBA is INR 20-25 lakhs per annum.

Government Jobs-

There are several options for jobs in the public sector after IISER. You can join as a Scientific Officer in government research institutes and labs. In NISER , students with a good CPI can appear for a BARC interview directly, which offers a starting salary of around INR 1 lakh per month, along with multiple amenities. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) also offers an average salary of INR 1 lakh per month to scientific officers upon entry. In ISRO (Read our blog on how to get into ISRO by clicking here ), the starting salary is 85k to 1 lac per month.

Teaching And Coaching-

Ed-tech giants like Physicswallah and Unacademy always hire people with Masters or PhDs with good teaching skills. as their faculty, and being from IISER can give you an upper hand in getting recruited by these companies. You can also join other coaching institutes.

The starting salary over here varies from 40k to 1 lac per month, but there is no upper limit in this sector, and the pay depends on your expertise.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) stands as a beacon for those passionate about fundamental science and research. While not designed for traditional placements, IISER propels its students into a world of possibilities, with a strong emphasis on pursuing Ph.D. opportunities globally. The institute’s graduates find themselves well-prepared for diverse paths, whether it be academia, industry, government jobs, or even the entrepreneurial realm. IISER’s impact extends beyond research, fostering individuals who contribute significantly to education and various sectors, embodying the institute’s commitment to holistic growth and excellence.

  • What are the funding options for PhD programs abroad?

Most PhD positions are fully funded, meaning tuition and living expenses are covered by fellowships or grants. Stipend amounts in different countries like the UK, Europe, and the US are mentioned in the article.

  • What are the salary expectations after a PhD in India vs. abroad?

You can expect significantly higher figures in foreign countries when compared to India.

  • Can IISER graduates pursue careers outside academia and research?

Definitely! Options like MBA are open, and securing positions in top institutes like IIMs can help you get packages of INR 20-25 lakhs per annum after an MBA.

  • What are some government job opportunities for IISER graduates?

Scientific Officer positions in research institutes and labs, BARC (starting salary INR 1 lakh per month), DRDO (average INR 1 lakh per month), and ISRO (starting salary INR 85k – 1 lac per month) are all mentioned as possibilities.
